En Masse Entertainment (the game's American publisher) has quite a few features lined up to distract you from the brouhaha going on outside the game's lush fantasy world, and the firm has updated its website accordingly. You'll find info on TERA's staged invasions, public quests, and economic system archived in the lengthy new post. The update also recaps the game's reputation system, its dungeon roster, and a few of the more interesting class tweaks to boot. Head to the official TERA site for all the goods. Wargaming.net releases World of Warplanes video dev diary Posted: 17 Apr 2012 09:30 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Historical, Video, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, War, Free-to-play, Dev Diaries, World of Warplanes Anxious for an update on World of Warplanes? If so, Wargaming.net has just the thing in the form of a new video dev blog that features gameplay footage and talking head interviews with various project principals. The clip resides on Wargaming.net's YouTube portal (and we've also got it for you after the cut, below). It's entirely in Russian, but fortunately it's also packed with sub-titles for the rest of us. Much of the info is a recap if you've been following the game for some time, but there are some interesting tidbits regarding aircraft prototypes (i.e., avatars that are quite different from the usual Mustang, Spitfire, and Sturmovik suspects found in most flight sims). The dev diary also tells us that while WoWP will initially ship with 20 planes per nation, the roster will gradually expand up to 100 aircraft for each faction. Aeria announces new Waren Story MMO, releases trailer Posted: 17 Apr 2012 08:30 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Classes, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Free-to-play "The continent of Waren is divided, and a dark force is stirring in its polluted western lands." So says the latest press release from Aeria Games, which trumpets the firm's new Waren Story MMO. Naturally the dark force and the polluted lands call for plenty of heroes, and players can saddle up as one of four classes (Warrior, Gunner, Archer, or Brawler) to take on the forces of evil in Aeria's latest free-to-play offering. The company says that players will "traverse an endless series of monster-infested plains" while exploring an "exotic medieval world," but Aeria hasn't released many details in regard to Waren Story's mechanics. There is a brief trailer available, though, so click past the break to check it out. Korean court confirms guilty verdict in TERA criminal trial Posted: 17 Apr 2012 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Culture, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Legal, TERA Multiple news sites are reporting a verdict in the long-running NCsoft vs. Bluehole Studio litigation regarding stolen Lineage III assets. According to the sites, the Korean Supreme Court has confirmed the guilty verdict in the criminal trial originally reached in 2009. The body also doled out "tougher punishment" in the form of prison time and probation for a former Lineage III department head and a team manager.ThisIsGame.com points out that there could be more bad news coming for the team that turned Lineage III assets into TERA, as the outcome of a $5.7 million civil suit is still pending. MMO Culture has published a timeline of the TERA legal proceedings, though neither website cites a source for its information. We'll update the story with more details as they become available. Posted: 17 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, in-game, Lore, PvE, Opinion, Roleplaying, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Hyperspace Beacon A year ago at PAX East, I spoke to Community Manager Stephen Reid about events in Star Wars: The Old Republic. He asked and answered a popular question at the time: "Will [SWTOR] have events where we randomly spawn NPCs for players to fight? No, but we will have events." He couldn't elaborate, but it did leave me wondering what that could possibly mean, especially when later at PAX East, Lead Writer Daniel Erickson said that SWTOR would not break the fourth wall by holding holiday-type events.Earlier this year, Update 1.1: Rise of the Rakghouls brought us a new flashpoint called Kaon Under Siege. A ship crash landed in the heart of the Tion Hegemony, taking the Rakghoul virus off the planet Taris and spreading it to a new world. Both the Republic and the Empire sought to find the source of this outbreak. Like all flashpoints, Koan Under Siege is instanced and separate from the rest of the open world. Relatedly, and quite surprisingly, BioWare started its first world event without announcing it on the official website or even letting anyone know that it was happening. On Sunday morning, everyone who was stopping by Carrick or Vaiken station could overhear an announcement that the planet Tatooine had been quarantined due to an outbreak of the Rakghoul virus. So started my investigation... Continue reading Hyperspace Beacon: Outbreak Hyperspace Beacon: Outbreak originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST. The Daily Grind: Do you play classes you don't like? Posted: 17 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Classes, MMO industry, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind I recently returned to Lord of the Rings Online in anticipation of the Rohan-themed expansion pack due later this year.As I was looking over my character page and deciding which of my toons I should take to 75, I reluctantly decided to abandon my highest level avatar. You see, he's a Guardian, and despite the fact that I'm basically throwing away 58 levels and some pretty decent gear, I simply can't bear the thought of playing what is absolutely the most boring class in any MMO, ever. Why did I roll one, then? Mainly because my launch-day guild was going for class balance, and no one else wanted to play a tank. And that's my long-winded way of leading into today's Daily Grind question. Do you play classes you don't like (and if so, why)? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Not So Massively: PAX East, D3 unlocks, and MOBA news Posted: 16 Apr 2012 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Events, real-world, Game mechanics, New titles, PvP, News items, Opinion, Free-to-play, Not So Massively, MOBA, League of Legends, Diablo III With just less than a month until Diablo III hits the shelves, Blizzard released another 275,000 beta keys into the wild. The share meter on the game's social media microsite also reached 30% this week and unlocked the first three pieces of exclusive content. Meanwhile, Path of Exile celebrated an incredibly successful pre-order campaign, netting over $200,000 in just six days and selling 13 of its $1,000 diamond packages. In the land of MOBAs, League of Legends looked back on PAX East this week and celebrated some of the incredible costumes that fans turned up in. Dota 2 fixed a few behavioural problems with bots, added the ability to skip straight to kills in a game replay, and brought back the popular Random Draft game mode. Bloodline Champions revealed its new bloodline Dryad, and Rise of Immortals revealed its new crystalline tank immortal Shard. Heroes of Newerth released its third ranged agility hero in a row this week, the unfortunately named Artillery. RIFT community team livestreaming Infernal Dawn tomorrow Posted: 16 Apr 2012 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Patches, Previews, Endgame, News items, RIFT If you're playing RIFT, odds are good you're looking forward to the next major content update -- and if you're also a raider, so much the better. But it's one thing to read about all of the neat things that will be going on in a new raid and another thing entirely to actually see them. That's why the community team is hosting an official livestream of the new Infernal Dawn raid that's getting released this week. The run will begin at 11:30 a.m. PDT, moving through the entirety of the raid and showing off all of the bosses without spoiling the fights themselves. The community team will also be explaining the lore behind the area and the bosses and answering community questions when possible. So if you've got the time around noon tomorrow to check it out, head over to the game's Facebook page and get ready for a guided tour of the newest raid. Champions Online alerts players to a new trailer Posted: 16 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Super-hero, Trailers, Video, Game mechanics, Patches, Previews, News items, Free-to-play, Champions Online If you haven't played the content in the latest Champions Online update, you haven't been playing the game. After all, the update launched last Friday. But maybe you're a free player and you're still on the fence about whether or not the game is worth playing with all of the system overhauls and new mechanics. In the hopes of targeting that critical but indecisive user base, the development team has put together a new trailer for the On Alert update. All right, so perhaps a trailer isn't the best place to show off detailed mechanical shifts in depth unless you really enjoy watching math. But it still shows off a bit of the new group challenges and the new Alert system, and the update's information hub can fill you in on the more numerical shifts. Check out the trailer just past the break, and if it sparks your interest, you can log into the game and start playing with the new systems now. New Dark Age of Camelot video shows off relic raid test-run Posted: 16 Apr 2012 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Dark Age of Camelot, PvP, News items Realm-vs.-realm combat pioneer Dark Age of Camelot is seeing a number of changes to the relic raid system in the upcoming patch 1.112, and last Wednesday the devs gathered a bunch of guillible cannon fod-- err, brave adventurers to help them test out the new updates with an all-out relic raiding brawl. Mythic figured that an event of such magnitude shouldn't go unnoticed, so the studio recorded the ordeal and put together a lovely little video full of an incredible amount of death, destruction, and general RvR chaos. Which faction will reign supreme in this rumble for the relic? Well, there's only one way to find out: Go see for yourself! Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Daniel Stahl Posted: 16 Apr 2012 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Interviews, Opinion, Star Trek Online, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews, Captain's Log Next in this series of interviews conducted on my visit to Cryptic Studios in Los Gatos, California, last month is a chat with Daniel Stahl, Executive Producer of Star Trek Online. I first asked Stahl to give me an overview of his responsibilities as Executive Producer, as there are many people who are either new to STO (or even to gaming overall) who may not have a clear understanding of his role entails. He stated his job is "similar to making movies." He has several direct reports, the first being the software person or the person responsible for the team of people who actually create the code for the game. The second is the Content Lead, who is responsible for new missions, new features, and anything to with player experience. Finally, the Quality Assurance team also reports to him. Leaderboard: Hobbits vs. Gnomes Posted: 16 Apr 2012 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Polls, Opinion, Races, Miscellaneous, Leaderboard We shorties have been looked down upon our entire lives, so it's not without some sympathy that I champion the cause of the shorter races in MMOs. Happily, there are a lot of them, and they have their ardent supporters, with the added bonus of seemingly irritating the "Tallies" around them.Yet out of all of the diminutive races in online games, two seem to stand out as the kingpins of the Shortie Empire. The first is Hobbits, the classic heroes of Tolkien's novels as well as Lord of the Rings Online. With their genial attitude, disregard for shoes, and fondness for multiple breakfasts, they've endeared themselves to millions and influenced the development of the RPG genre. The second is Gnomes, the tenacious inventors of the underworld who seem to pop up in every MMO that isn't afraid of a steampunk fringe. So if a Hobbit and a Gnome fell into a pit together and there was only one breakfast to be had, which would go hungry and which would be satisfied? In other words, which race rules more than the other? Vote after the jump! En Masse releases TERA launch cinematic Posted: 16 Apr 2012 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Trailers, Video, MMO industry, New titles, News items, TERA It must be getting close to TERA's launch day because we can't go five minutes without a new reveal, beta review, game update, or video. En Masse's latest PR drop is a new cinematic called Beginnings that gives Arborean newbs some insights into the fantasy world they're about to inhabit. The clip shows off all seven playable races and makes a great jumping-off point for delving into TERA's lore and backstory. It sets up the conflict between the Valkyon Federation and the soulless argon army that threatens it, and the clip also hints at why players are gathering on the game's newbie Island of Dawn. See for yourself after the cut, and then check out the latest round of new launch features on the official site.
