Well, 2012 is here and I still don't have this in my living room, but the Kinect is bringing us closer every day.

Review: Choplifter Appeals to Your Inner-Masochist

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:31 PM PST

With the industry's seemingly never-ending desire to churn out games for a franchise until it drains every bit of life left in a series, it seems strange that we had to wait so long for a new Choplifter game. Originally published for the Apple II in 1982, ports of Choplifter appeared as late as 1986 for the Sega Master System and NES. The series fell dormant for a period of time, despite periodic waves of nostalgia for early '80s classics that have given us atrocious remakes of other once beloved games. It's fitting then that inXile -- the studio that brought The Bard's Tale back from the dead -- brings us Choplifter HDon XBLA, PSN, and PC.

The new game sticks closely to the original's premise: fly a helicopter and rescue people while shooting stuff. Most missions will require you to rescue individuals trapped in warzones around the world, and the campaign does a nice job of changing up environments to keep things from becoming too familiar or boring. Some of the stranded will start the level injured, and you'll have to rescue them within a time limit. Depending on which helicopter you fly, you'll have to worry about killing passengers and innocents on the ground with reckless flying or taking too much enemy fire. Other missions task you with blowing up enemy targets or simply escaping the level alive.

Mojang, Good Old Games, and More Also Oppose SOPA

What's becoming a (very welcome) daily occurrence, several more members of the videogame industry have come out against the much-maligned Stop Online Piracy Act.

Good Old Games made its stance clear on its website today. Despite being owned by a foreign company -- it's operated by the Poland-based developer of The Witcher II, CD Projekt Red, which just yesterday decided to alter its policy on how to deal with piracy -- the company felt it needed to do something about SOPA, a proposed bill that could radically alter the Internet for the worse.

The Top Xbox 360 Games of 2012

Without a concrete slate of first-party announcements (besides Halo 4), we're leaning more towards the 360's solid foundation of third party titles. As expected: if you like shooters, then you'll enjoy the Xbox 360. We still haven't seen any Kinect-only titles to merit inclusion on our list, but if you prefer using analog sticks to move and shoot, then this is the system for you (still). If you're wondering why something on another platform list is missing (like GTA5), it's probably because we feel that the third-party games below feel and play better on the 360 -- while some other games just feel a bit better on the PS3. We'll see if E3 will add new game announcements or new hardware altogether, but until then, here's our pick for which third-party titles make the 360 shine in 2012.

WiiWare Demos Reappear in North America

WiiWare

Out of nowhere, several dozen WiiWare game demos have reappeared on the Wii Shop Channel and can now be downloaded for free.

As discovered by Nintendo World Report, 50 demos in all are currently available. These had all been available previously, but were removed from the service as Nintendo inexplicably only allows demos to be available for a certain period of time.

Is Xbox.com to Blame for Frequent Xbox Live Account Hacks?

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 11:03 AM PST

Xbox.com

Update: Microsoft has responded to our questions on the matter. Regarding the method outlined below, which I referred to as a "loophole," a Microsoft spokesperson told 1UP, "This is not a 'loophole' in Xbox.com. The hacking technique outlined is an example of brute force attacks and is an industry-wide issue."

And as for the attacks themselves, Microsoft continues to assert that there is no breach in Xbox Live's security. The full statement follows:
