Cyphers Online: Hybrid Moba/MMO First Look

This game is what I would want all MOBA's to be. One that takes into account your level. And allows you to grow stronger gain gear and have interesting builds. Most MOBA's you start from zero every game. Which to be honest is fair. But that gets old and boring after awhile.

Plus, Android laptops, reader questions, and more!

This week, on episode 225 of the No BS podcast, the Maximum PC gang gathered to flap their lips to wonder if it's time to ask if Steam Machines are losing steam and spill detail's on Intel's Pentium "K" and Devil's Canyon parts. The crew also talks abou the possibility of cheap 4K monitors and ponders if any of them would actually want to run a 4K monitor at home over a standard 1080P panel. There's also a lively discussion about why HP would put Android on a its new laptop and if Chromebooks are "worthless." That plus staff picks, questions from readers, and a full helping of bile and sarcasm from one of Gordon's signature rants.

Microsoft's Kinect for Windows v2 Sensor Goes Up for Pre-Order

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 09:39 AM PDT

Kinect for Windows v2Second generation Kinect sensor is coming to Windows

Microsoft announced at BUILD back in April that it would make its Kinect for Windows v2 sensor and Software Development Kit (SDK) available sometime this summer. Keeping true to its promise, developers can pre-order the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor. Those who do will be able to start building out solutions such as Windows Store apps for Kinect ahead of everyone else.

Sensors that are pre-ordered will ship out in July. During that time, Microsoft will also release a public beta of its SDK. This will all happen a few months ahead of when the general public will have access to the hardware and software, Microsoft says.

"Thousands of developers wanted to take part in our Developer Preview program but were unable to do so—in fact, we're still receiving requests from all around the world. So for these and other developers who are eager to start using the Kinect for Windows v2, the pre-order option offers access to the new sensor ahead of general availability. Bear in mind, however, that we have limited quantities of pre-order sensors, so order while supplies last," Microsoft stated in a blog post.

If you're interested, head here for more information on pre-ordering the Kinect for Windows v2, which runs $199.

Netflix and Verizon Spar Over Low Quality Video Streams

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 09:24 AM PDT

Netflix VerizonNetflix gets snarky, Verizon gets serious

After reluctantly inking a multi-year agreement with Comcast to ensure that its video streams reach customers without a degradation in quality, Netflix probably isn't all that gung-ho to pay what it feels would be another extortion fee, this time to Verizon. Instead, Netflix has been showing Verizon customers a somewhat snarky message blaming the ISP for low-quality video streams, and Verizon is none-too-happy about it.

"The Verizon network is crowded right now. Adjusting video for smoother playback...," the message reads when buffering and lower-quality video streams are necessary on Verizon's network.

Pictures of the message have been making the rounds on Twitter, but Verizon isn't amused, to put it lightly. Verizon fired back with a cease and desist letter demanding that Netflix stop its shenanigans by removing the notices.

"We further demand that within five days from the date of this letter that Netflix provide Verizon with any and all evidence and documentation that it possesses substantiating Netflix's assertion to Yuri Victor [the journalist who first tweeted an image of Netflix's message] that his experience in viewing a Netflix video was solely attributable to the Verizon network, and that Netflix also provide a list of all Netflix customers … to whom Netflix has delivered such messages," the letter reads, according to Recode.

Netflix issued a statement on the matter through spokesman Jonathan Friedland. He said, "This is about consumers not getting what they parid for from their broadband provider. We are trying to provide more transparency, just like we do with the ISP Speed Index, and Verizon is trying to shut down that discussion."

MSI Expect to Boost Branded Motherboard Shipments by 1 Million Units

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 08:51 AM PDT

MSI MotherboardMSI is riding high on demand for its gaming motherboards

Competition is downright fierce in the motherboard market where only a handful of players remain. It's the reason why a price war may break out, which in turn could help motherboard makers sell more units. We're not talking about thousands of mobos -- MSI is hoping to ship 7 million branded motherboards in 2014, up from 6 million in 2013. In addition to engaging in a price war, MSI is benefiting from increased demand for its gaming boards.

Charles Jiang, MSI's executive vice president of motherboards and graphics cards, told Digitimes that demand for its gaming boards jumped up after it expanded its gaming brand Dragon Army to cover mobos and video cards. In other words, a combination of added bling and clever marketing.

The Dragon Army branding was originally used for MSI's line of gaming laptops and helped turn the company profitable, Jiang said. As for its motherboards, MSI shipped around 1.8 million in the first quarter of this year and expects to ship between 1.5 million to 1.7 million in the second quarter, noting that the drop is due to seasonality.

These figures don't included MSI's OEM motherboard businesses, just its branded boards. It's OEM business shipped about 11 million units in 2013 and is on pace to do the same in 2014. MSI's biggest clients for OEM boards include Lenovo, HP, and Dell.

You Could Own the Largest Video Game Collection in the World

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 08:23 AM PDT

Michael ThomassonOver 11,000 games collected during the past 25 years

As recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records 2014 Gamers Edition, Michael Thommason is the owner of the world's largest collection of video games, though not for long. Thomasson's record collection of 11,000 games is up for auction and will change hands to the winning bidder, provided the reserve price is met. That hasn't happened yet with the high bid sitting at $50,000.

Included in the auction are all 10,607 games that were verified by Guinness plus over 400 more that were amassed since then. On top of that, Guinness didn't count duplicates, so that figure represents unique titles, many of which are in pristine condition. About a quarter of them are still sealed.

"I operated seven independent gaming stores during the nineties and have worked for another chain for the last decade. I also operated Good Deal Games online since 1998, having thousands of games cross my path. Whenever I purchased a game that did not directly come from the distributor I was able to look through all our inventory and pick out the nicest copy of a game, including grabbing the nicest box and manual," Thomasson explains on Game Gavel, the website where he's auctioning off his collection.

The games in his collection span many different systems -- 3DO, Atarti 2600, AGP X-System, Sega Dreamcast, Epoch Super Cassette Vision, and so forth. Despite getting rid of them all, Thomasson says he isn't leaving the hobby and will continue to write about them, teach college gaming classes, help with trade shows, and more.

Black Gold Online brings mechs to PvP battlegrounds

When you head to the PvP battleground in Black Gold Online, don't be surprised if you're the only chump walking around on two legs while everyone else is lording over you in mobile fortresses of steel, iron, and beastial flesh.

In a new dev diary, Snail Games elaborates on the Battle Carrier system in Black Gold's PvP. Players will be able to choose and customize their own walking mech or creature out of over 100 models. The Battle Carriers come in five varieties -- Raid, Assault, Siege, Aerial and Anti-air -- and each of them are strong against some and weak against others.

Producer Kee Zhang promised that no one Battle Carrier will dominate the landscape in PvP: "The idea of using a battle mount, with its own damage and attacks and such, came into the mix pretty early. The real light-bulb moment came when we thought of this 'Rock, paper, scissors' assortment -- every Carrier has advantages and attack bonuses over certain other Carriers, and in turn is vulnerable to another. It makes teamwork and strategy a must."

The Daily Grind: Does an MMO need lore to foster roleplaying?

      Posted: 06 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT

      Landmark
Commenters in MJ Guthrie's recent Landmark vs. EverQuest Next article brought up an interesting question about lore and roleplay in the two games. EverQuest Next, of course, will be drenched in EverQuestian lore and backstory and high-fantasy building rules, but the player-driven Landmark will have no hardcoded lore at all save what the players create, meaning you're as likely to see a geodesic dome spaceship as an Arabian Nights palace. (In fact, I would like to see both of these, please!)

But strict roleplayers going into Landmark might have a harder time immersing themselves in an unpredictable world where literally anything goes, at least in comparison to EQ Next's more formal storyline and concomitant expectations about the way the world works and how the characters got there. What do you think: Does an MMO need dev-guided lore and a common backstory for all characters to make it truly roleplay-friendly? How will you roleplay a serious character in a world like Landmark's?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

World of Darkness apparently reached alpha three different times

          Press E to seduce
Former CCP employees have revealed to The Guardian that the studio's World of Darkness MMO reached an alpha state on three separate occasions before it was cancelled earlier this year.

"I tested it myself on two different occasions out of those three," said former dev Nick Blood (yes, really). "With the first playtest, I was amazed at how little of the core game was there -- at this point the game had been in development for over half a decade. I mean, there was just nothing, literally nothing, for someone like me, a complete outsider to the WOD IP, to appreciate."

Blood goes on to reveal that the game had some sort of Assassin's Creed-style movement system, though he calls it "very basic in comparison."

Tracing the history of the MOBA

Blizzard producing a MOBA isn't entirely a snake eating its own tail, but close.
You hear the kids talking about League of Legends and Infinite Crisis and Heroes of Newerth and you don't understand. You aren't clear on what stuff like jungling and lanes are all about. Are you getting old? Well, yes, if you're referring to a group of people as "the kids" you almost certainly are. But you also might just not understand the history of MOBAs as a genre, a history helpfully outlined in an article on the genre from inception to the present.

The article traces the genre's genesis back to the earliest form of gameplay found in StarCraft's Aeon of Strife map, which paved the way for a Warcraft III map that expanded the same basic concept. The genre's core conceits -- two bases on either side of the map, players working to push to the other side -- have remained fairly fixed through the various permutations, but there's still room for expansion. So if you want to find out more about what this new-fangled genre is all about, sit down for some reading.

Vainglory announced as a tablet-focused MOBA

Can you smell what I'm cooking? Because I can. I think my kitchen is on fire.
The MOBA arena is crowded, but the number of MOBAs you can play on your tablet is slightly more limited. Super Evil Megacorp, a new studio founded by veterans of Riot Games and Rockstar, is aiming to expand that number with its upcoming title Vainglory. Billed as the ultimate tablet MOBA, the preview trailer released today shows off a handful of the game's characters, environments, and attacks.

Vainglory is currently in limited release, with more information to come as it nears its full release on the iOS app store. The developers are also stressing that the game will deliver a full-featured experience for players despite being on tablets. So if you've got an iPad and just can't get enough arena combat, check out the trailer just past the break.

Civilization Online review rounds out with combat and replay

It's kind of like a funhouse mirror for the game you remember.
Looking at Civilization Online with longing might not be a great idea, as there are currently no plans for a release here in North America, but Steparu has been reviewing the beta, and if you'd like to find out what it's about the last part is available now. This final portion covers the game's combat mechanics, how players can get into games in progress, and gives an overall assessment of how the game is shaping up through testing.

While the combat in the game is fairly standard -- tab-targeting, hotbars, and WASD movement rule the day -- it does offer players a variety of options with both main and sub classes, along with a variety of vehicles and mounts that have their own combat uses. Overall, the game gets pretty high marks as what it's meant to be, a very PvP-focused game that sees factions warring for dominance again and again. Which is probably what you expected from the name, really.

            Nothing to hide, indeed.
Does Shards Online sound interesting to you? Well, then, why not play it? Starting at 4:00 p.m. EDT today and running through the weekend, anyone can download the game's current client and jump in on the pre-alpha servers for free. Moreover, anyone can just as freely discuss what they see in the game, with no NDA in place (not that having one would make much of a difference here, obviously).

The only caveat is that this is a pre-alpha preview, which means that the version of the game that you'll be seeing is still in a very rough and unfinished state. But if you've been curious about the game's Kickstarter campaign but reluctant to donate without seeing the game in action, here's your chance to get in the game and find out more for yourself. We'll also be streaming from inside the game on Saturday, if you'd like to watch but don't have the time to jump in yourself.

Really, it's nothing more than a teaser for the show and the upcoming reveals, but the shot of New York City in fast motion set against a soft voice singing "Silent Night" delivers on atmosphere if not details. You can check it out after the break.

You were expecting a pun about being shocked, weren't you? I can't blame you.
Final Fantasy XIV is going to have a big week at E3 next week. That's not speculation; Naoki Yoshida is running two live letters from the show floor, and players have been promised big announcements. But a big patch has just dropped for the game, and patch 2.28 brings plenty for players to enjoy all by itself. The promise of more in the near future is just icing on the cake.

Owners of Animus weapons can now continue advancing their weapons to Novus incarnations, with larger Mythology tomestone rewards making the road to Animus a bit less onerous. The patch also includes the new sightseeing log, challenging players to find the scenic vistas across Eorzea. It also improves the existing posing system, with new poses for each race and a memory of what pose you were in when you move. You can read through the full patch notes to get an idea of everything contained therein, and take a gander at the Ramuh preview for an idea of what's coming next in patch 2.3.

Because were were afraid that there might be a portion of the planet where you could not go to war.
Between World of Warplanes and World of Tanks, Wargaming.net has your need for mechanized warfare covered. Almost, anyway. Sure, you can shoot at other planes and other tanks, but how are you going to also blow up a whole lot of boats? You can't... until World of Warships comes out, anyway. Then you can blow up war machines pretty much anywhere you want.

So when is it coming out? That's still something of a secret, but it's obvious that World of Warships is the next game to get a big push from the studio, starting with this year's E3 trailer embedded just past the break. While the trailer doesn't include any in-game footage, it does give you a clear picture of what you'll be doing in the game -- shooting at boats from other boats. Actually, you probably could have guessed that one without the trailer.
