Rumor: Intel to Showcase Broadwell-powered Device at Computex

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 07:55 PM PDT

Intel Broadwell

Broadwell is the next "tick" in Intel's "tick-tock" chip release cadence

Around a fortnight back, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich all but ruled out the possibility of the company's next-generation Broadwell processors shipping in time for the back-to-school season, saying that the first devices built around the 14nm die shrink of Intel's Haswell microarchitecture were more likely to be available sometime around the holidays. In the meantime, you can look forward to Intel demoing a 2-in-1 device prototype powered by a 5th generation Core processor.

Per an IDG News Service report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the chip maker's plans, Intel is going to show off a Broadwell-powered 2-in-1 device at the upcoming Computex trade show (June 3-7) in Taipei. Reportedly codenamed "Llama Mountain," the rumored laptop-tablet hybrid is said to be really thin. As for the other details, you'll have to wait until Computex gets underway.

All we know about Broadwell at this stage is that, apart from delivering better CPU and GPU performance over its 22nm predecessor,  it's expected to be 30 percent more power efficient.

Gigabyte U21MD is an Ultrabook, Tablet and Desktop Rolled Into One

Posted: 01 Jun 2014 05:22 PM PDT

Gigabyte U21MD When Docked

The 3-in-one comes with a docking station for desktop mode

Gigabyte is adding a new 11.6-inch convertible laptop to its U-series ultrabook line, the company said Thursday. Powered by a 4th generation Intel Core i5 processor, the U21MD, as the upcoming device is called, sports a capacitive multitouch panel capable of being rotated 180 degrees.

When you first look at the U21MD, "new" is hardly the word that springs to mind, given its striking resemblance to the company's U2142 two-in-one ultrabook. The U21MD is essentially the U2142, but with a Haswell processor instead of an Ivy Bridge part. Also, unlike its predecessor, the new U21MD is not just limited to doubling as a tablet. Thanks to its D21 docking station, the 0.78-inches thick, 3-lbs heavy ultrabook can also be used as a desktop PC.

"To turn the U21MD into a desktop, simply slot the laptop into the docking station(D21) and connect peripheral devices, including a monitor, keyboard and mouse," the Taiwanese PC vendor said in a press release Thursday. "You won't need to plug and unplug I/O ports repeatedly anymore! The D21 also provides excellent connectivity options such as HDMI, USB, and internet. Plug it in the D21, and enjoy your personal multimedia center."

The 3-in-one U21MD packs a Core i5-4200U 1.6-2.6GHz CPU, 1366x768 LCD, up to 16GB RAM, up to 1.5TB storage (512GB mSATA SSD plus 1TB HDD), 1.3MP camera, 802.11b/g/n,  Bluetooth V4.0 + LE and 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet. Other specs include two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports,  HDMI-out, RJ45, Mic-in, Earphone-out, SD card reader, SIM card slot, and last but not the least, the all-important DC-in Jack Docking port.

The D21 docking station comes with two USB 2.0 ports, three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI1.4a, RJ45, Mic-in, Headphone-out and docking connector. Further, the dock also packs 30mm speaker drivers.

Make My MMO
This week in MMO crowdfunding news, we heard from Pathfinder devs on crafting as well as Guns of Icarus devs on how they managed to pull off two successful Kickstarter campaigns. EVE Online fans paid nearly $100k to Kickstart an internet spaceship history book, and Elite: Dangerous began its premium beta phase while fellow space sim sandbox Star Citizen delayed its dogfighting module release.

Finally, indie sandbox Trials of Ascension, fresh off its successful $40k crowdfunding campaign, announced a raffle that includes a demo pass, a Skype convo with the devs, and a free item from the ToA store.

    One Shots: Mount up!

Whether it's a real-world or fantasy version, we apparently can't resist showing off a sweet, sweet ride. This week's edition of One Shots is dedicated to all of your spiffy-looking mounts and the paint jobs that you had done to them while they were asleep.

The first one comes from The Lurker, who might become one with his horse in EverQuest II: "Arriving at the magical teleportation spires in the Commonlands. Stepping into the magical wortex will dissolve even a Deathknight and restructure him in a distant land. Is it really safe? If I ride into it on my horse, will we arrive as a centaur? And must I then join the Centaur Herds in the Thundering Steppes? Is that how they came to be?"

Get the picture in full Technicolor as well as several additional ones -- at no extra charge! -- all after the break.

The Daily Grind: Do MMOs make you feel old?

I did my due diligence and tried WildStar this weekend. I pretty much knew the game wasn't for me prior to logging in, but given my job and given a press account, yeah. I needed to test that hypothesis.

I don't know if I'm just getting old or what, but the kindest thing I can say about WildStar is that it's over-caffeinated. I mean, come on. When an NPC looks at you and screams "HOLY SH*T, YOU LEVELED UP!" while virtual sci-fi confetti explodes all over your screen, it sets a certain tone.

What about you, Massively readers? Do any particular MMOs make you feel old? Also, my lawn. Off it.

Hyperspace Beacon: Beating the system in the new SWTOR event

Hyperspace Beacon: Beating the system in the new SWTOR event
I'm not a huge fan of gambling in general. "The house always wins" isn't a motto, it's the truth. But if you have fun while you're doing it, then it's fine that the house wins. However, I don't have fun playing most gambling games, especially the overly simplistic ones like slot machines. Some gambling establishments will claim to have the loosest slots in the business, but I can tell you that the slot machines in Club Vertigo and the Star Cluster Casino are not that loose. But there is a best way to play the game.

On June 10th, Star Wars: The Old Republic launches Update 2.8: Spoils of War, and the casino event called the Festival of Splendor along with most of the patch already resides on the public test server. Over the last week or so, Voidmynx (a.k.a Laura Williams from Gamebreaker's The Republic and HSB Sci-Fi MMO Show) and I have tried multiple methods to beat the slots. And I believe we've found a decent one.

City of Steam is, well, full steam ahead for its upcoming 2.6.1 patch. Mechanist Games said that the big focus of the patch will be an overhaul to the crafting system to make it easier to understand. The studio will be converting catalysts into a "valuable" substitute and will replace the Spiremarks currency with Bound Electrum when the update lands.

Currently, the game has finished its first cross-server PvP bout and is challenging its playerbase to the aptly named Tower of Peril dungeon.

Perfect Ten: The MMOs that influenced me greatly

Every one of us has an "MMO resume": a list of titles that we've played, whether briefly or extensively. Some of those are just games, casual flings that meant nothing. But others can take a more meaningful role in our lives, influencing how we experience and view MMOs.

I would scarcely say that my resume is one of the most robust you'll ever see; I'm sure plenty of you have played more than I. However, I like to think that I've had a journey over the course of a decade or so that's shaped who I am as a gamer. Since it's my birthday today, I'm going to share 10 of those influential MMOs with you and what they've done for me. You're going to get me cake.

Massively's first impressions of Black Gold Online's beta

Do you prefer a steampunk or fantasy flavor in your MMO? With Black Gold Online you don't have to choose! And for those who vehemently dislike one or the other, you're welcome to express that distaste on the battlefield; Snail Games' upcoming free-to-play game features realm versus realm warfare that pits machine against magic. With these two different genres represented, the game looks to please a broader spectrum of players than the traditional single-genre titles that populate the MMOverse. The question is, will it succeed?

Even though we've perused available news and watched a variety of videos about everything from the various classes and different races to action combat to guild vs. guild systems, nothing beats getting into the MMO and experiencing it for yourself. Closed beta for Black Gold Online began mid-May, so I jumped in to get a taste of what awaits players when the game hits open beta this summer. What I found is that while the game excels in some areas, it comes up short in others. Here's a run-down of my first impressions.

Perpetuum playerbase trending upward, game enhancements coming

The Perpetuum team released a new dev blog this week, the better to remind players of where the sci-fi sandbox stands after its payment model switch and its Steam launch.

The post says that the game's average player count is nearly five times higher than it was before, and that's with a Steam Early Access tag scaring people away. The blog doesn't disclose financial details, but it does say that the game is succeeding. "After months (years?) of worrying about what to put on your plate tomorrow, it's a liberating feeling to have that off of the list of things to worry about, and being able to just focus on making the game better," the post explains.

With that in mind, it's time to delve into improvements. Those mentioned include a gamma revamp, quality-of-life upgrades, an assignment system revamp, and more!

Everyone wants to be Steam, I guess. These days, it's all the trend for studios and publishers to tie their products down to a digital game platform for the "convenience" of offering news and game access in one place. Glyph and Arc are just two of the more recent high-profile programs taking a shot at Steam's dominant grip on the gaming community, and I suspect that more will come.

So do you see digital game platforms as a convenience or an annoyance? I am of a divided opinion on the subject. Yes, it's nice to have multiple game launchers streamlined into one place, but that's convenient only if I'm playing more than one title. More often than not, it's an extra click or two plus an ongoing background program that I didn't really need in the first place.

What say you? What say we all?

                      H1Z1 floats possible server rulesets

A short Reddit post from SOE revealed a few possible server rulesets that the team has been discussing for H1Z1. While these aren't set in stone, it is an interesting peek into the possibilities of both official and player-run servers. The possible server rulesets include:
                      • Hardcore ruleset (wipes all ownership and recipes upon death)
                      • PvP vs. PvE
                      • Military weapons toggle
                      • Guns toggle (melee/bows only server)
                      • Roleplay (VOIP attracts zombies and other tidbits)
                      • World chat vs. area chat
                      • Hardcore ruleset #2: Starvation! (food and water consumption are much higher)
                      • Hardcore ruleset #3: Zombies and wolves are deadlier, faster, and hardier
                      • Base destructibility (easy, hard, not at all)
SOE also indicated that it would be possible to create rulesets that mix-and-matched between these ideas.

EVE Online: Kronos is on deck for next Tuesday's release, which means that CCP Games is going into overdrive to inform the community as to what to expect with the newest expansion. As such, today we have a pair of lengthy posts talking about new exploration sites and ship/module balancing.

In the expansion, players will be tasked with hunting down a particular sect of pirates, the Guristas, by hunting through a null-sec system for the prized data. CCP will be dangling eight new ship skins as potential rewards for a successful search.

Kronos will also include a rebalance of 38 ships, a "heap" of modules, and a total overhaul of the drone weapon system. CCP stated that the two themes of the expansion's balancing are the ascendancy of pirates and mercenaries and advancements in industrial technology.

CCP also just posted the patch notes from Kronos, so give them a look!
