The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot traps you for hours of fun

It might sound like a bad thing, but my favorite part of playing Ubisoft's The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is logging into the game. I just love it when I get past the loading screen that warns "closed beta" to see who has attacked my castle and how the attackers fared during the attempt. Usually they have just blown past my defenses and humiliated me, but thanks to a wonderful replay feature, I can see exactly where my castle is at its weakest and can adjust accordingly.

Every player in the game gets a castle like mine. They're all floating in the sky, chock-full of riches that are up for grabs as long as the attacking player can get past the castle's defenses. The gameplay is nothing really new. We have been playing castle defense or action-based puzzlers for a long time, but The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot delivers everything in such a polished, unique-looking package that it gets props for being unique.

There's much more to the game, but you'll have to get past my glue traps to read the details!

"This is the last time I ever got to see my Orc Choppa in game," sent in reader Sean. "Oddly enough, I couldn't get a screenshot of my Order character because even in the final days they didn't take out the faction locking, and so I was locked out for eight hours."

It's also the last time that I'll be able to make that awesome Predator pun that you see in the title of this week's column there. Man, with Warhammer Online gone, how will I be able to make my '80s action movie references? I guess I'll just put on a brave face and soldier on, somehow.

Folks, I hate to break it to you, but we're running out the clock on 2013. If it's been a year that's near and dear to your heart, I urge you to cherish every moment you have with it from now until midnight on New Year's Eve. After that, your only recourse is to wait for VH1's Remember the 2013s to air.

Every year for gaming has its ups and downs, both for individuals and for the community as a whole. Instead of dwelling on the negative, I'd love for you to pick out one highlight of your 2013 gaming year to share with us.

For me, it was probably getting to play WildStar at long last and finding that it's met my expectations and then some. I was nervous about that, because you know how hype can be, but now I can breathe easier and just get excited for launch. What about you?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

        Make My MMO: Crowdfunding December 15 - 28, 2013

'Tis the season... but not for news! With minds focused on the holidays, it looks as if not much happened in the realm of crowdfunding since our last Make My MMO update. Just how slow was it? It was so slow that Star Citizen did not announce earning another $2 million.

A few tidbits did, however, did trickle out. Novus AEternio met its goal within 102 hours and still has a month of funding ahead. On the other hand, Empires of Tahn followed what seems to be the new norm: cancel the project before getting the dreaded "unsuccessful" label. And one title that is already strong in its development has jumped back into the crowdfunding realm; The Repopulation aims to incorporate even more features into the sandbox. There are also a couple dev blogs to speak of and a few odds and ends, all of which you will find rounded up for you below.

The Mog Log: 2013 in review for Final Fantasy XI and XIV

Took a long time getting here.
This feels as if it's been a really long year to me. Spending an entire year waiting for a game to re-release is certainly part of the reason why, but it really seems that there were a lot of things going on for both Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV over the last 365-ish days. I didn't even do a year-in-review last year because what could be reviewed? One game shut down and was waiting for a full revamp, and the other was just hitting the numbers and moving along.

This year, though, has been the big one. The fifth expansion that no one ever expected to release actually came out. The relaunch happened. A whole lot of mechanics got updated. I flew across the freaking country. It was a big year if you were a fan of online games with moogles, even if that year wound up being a lot bigger for Final Fantasy XIV than Final Fantasy XI.

Norrathian Notebook: EQII's new Frostfell experience

            There's no place like Frostfell.

No matter how long you've been absent from EverQuest II, and no matter how many expansions come and go, you've known that there was always one thing you could be sure would stay the same year in and year out: Frostfell's Wonderland Village. Well, no more! Like Freeport and Qeynos before it, the staple of Frostfell celebration has undergone quite the transformation. So stepping through the Magic Closet now might be a bit of a shock in a going-back-home-and-finding-your-parents-converted-your-bedroom-into-an-office kind of way.

But unlike the parental remodeling, this renovation is meant to make the place more inviting for your return. With a beautiful new setting to go with the year's new quests and achievements, EQII's Frostfell experience is better than ever.

The Road to Mordor: Lord of the Ring Online's roadmap for 2014

              LotRO
It's time for our final Lord of the Rings Online column of the year, so it's quite fitting that we use this space to discuss Executive Producer Kate Paiz's letter outlining what the LotRO community should expect come next year.

Before we begin, I want to mention that I have a mixed reaction to these letters from Turbine. On one hand, I love knowing what's coming and appreciate the attempt made to inform. On the other, these letters can be maddeningly vague on specifics (Turbine likes its "broad strokes" when releasing future info to fans), giving a "trust us, everything's going to be OK, but we're not going to say exactly how right now" vibe. I've grown weary of that. This letter in particular should have been as specific as possible.

There's been a huge swirl of discussion surrounding the letter, moreso than in previous years, due to the "bombshell" that there will be no expansion in 2014. I've been talking with friends about it and listening to what folks are saying, and I could make a case for this being the worst thing for the game and the best. But you don't come here for other people's opinions; you come for mine. Bring it on, 2014. I'm nothing but opinionated about this game.

Last time Massively's MJ tried to visit Final Fantasy XIV's Haukke Manor, she ran into a bit of a snag and was held up on an earlier part of the story quest chain. (On the plus side, she also "met up" with quite the southern belle!) This time, however, nothing but an evil, unresponsive queue will prevent her from experiencing this next dungeon. Really! End of Holiday Season Reveals Yearly High for Tech Stocks

                  Posted: 28 Dec 2013 02:46 PM PST

It looks like 2014 might be a profitable year as well

The tech industry has seen a hefty rise this holiday season, with stock prices remaining at their yearly highs. TechSpot reports 45 tech IPOs out of the United States over the past year, which happens to be the most seen since thirteen years ago in 2000. The forecast for 2014 is looking awfully sweet as well, with mobile game and storage companies looking to enter the fold.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, giants like Google, Yahoo, and Twitter are taking the cake. According to reports from AllThingsD, Google's shares are up 58 percent at $1,118. Facebook's shares hit their stride after last year's frustrating decrease with stocks up 117 percent on the year. Twitter is at $70 a share as well, with the social networking giant having tripled its IPO price announced a few months ago.

It's been a prosperous year for these companies for sure, and with names like Square, Zoosk, Dropbox, developer King, and Alibaba Group going public in 2014, things will likely be on the rise from here on out.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Firmware Fix Delayed Even Further

                  Posted: 28 Dec 2013 01:34 PM PST

No release date in sight for firmware fix

Earlier this month, Microsoft took a flawed Surface Pro 2 firmware update down after issues were found that drained tablet battery life and affects users' ability to utilize sleep mode. After making the update unavailable, Microsoft informed users that it would be re-relasing the firmware update "after the holidays."

Much to the dismay of Surface Pro 2 users everywhe, Microsoft went back on this statement earlier this week. In an email to Computerworld, a representative clarified their positiion: "We are working to release an alternative update package as soon as possible." The representative did not give a specific date, and there have been no updates since then as to when users can expect the fix to become available. Meanwhile, Surface Pro 2 users are becoming extremely frustrated with the wait -- and as of yet, there's still no date in sight for the update.

Are you one of the affected users waiting for the fix?

Facebook Update Rolled Out for Windows 8.1 Users

                  Posted: 28 Dec 2013 12:56 PM PST

New features include New Stories and 320 snap view

Windows 8.1 users who spend a lot of time on Facebook will be delighted to find the social networking app has been updated with a slew of additional features. Given the fact that Windows apps often go ahead and complete updates in the background, these new features may come as a surprise to some users, but for the unenlightened, we'll outline what you can expect the next time you get the urge to look at photos of babies and cats. That's what Facebook is now, right?

The latest version of the Windows 8.1 Facebook app includes New Stories notifications to alert you when something new is going on, the option to create new albums straight from your Photos page. You can also utilize the 320 snap view for the app and a smileys sticker pack for messaging. Editing posts has been streamlined, as well as which news items show up in your timeline. If you've already read it, the update will also endeavor to delete older posts to de-clutter.

All in all, it sounds like a pretty efficient update for heavy Facebook users. Will you be checking it out to see if your overall social networking experience has been improved?

It's no secret that Massively's MJ prefers to play healers. Other than her Assassin, all the classes that she plays with regularity in Aion are ones that can give your health bar a boost. No, the real question is: Which one should she play now? She has an Asmodian Songweaver slowly inching up the level ladder, an Elyos Chanter that never sees enough play time, and of course her Elyos Cleric that needs a few more levels herself to hit max. So who will the lucky healer be that gets the love and attention (not to mention the air time) today? Join us live at 11:00 a.m. to see.

Whenever I feel low on ideas, a new running gag is born.
I'm a complicated man, and no one understands me but my fellow searchers for pictures of men wearing hats. Three years ago, I found a picture of a man with a hat, and for a brief moment all seemed to be right in the world. Since then, despite a tireless complete lack of searching, I had not found another picture that matched my simple criterion of "man with a hat that I wanted to use as an article header."

But now I've found another picture of a man with a hat! Although his hat isn't all that great.

Are you going to spend your entire weekend looking for pictures of men with hats to leave in the comments? Or are you just going to look at what the Massively staff will be doing in WRUP just past the break and then inform us of your plans? If you're unsure, consider the problems of men wearing hats.

The Daily Grind: Is there an ideal patch schedule for games?

It appears that Guild Wars 2 and I have very different ideas about what qualifies as a major update.
Guild Wars 2 is very proud of its every-two-week patches, but I find that those frequent patches wind up being so small that they're not really engaging. This is no fault of the developers, really; two weeks is not much time to design anything substantial. It's fast, but is that enough?

By contrast, Final Fantasy XIV packed a lot into its first major patch post-launch, which is a good thing, as it was released nearly four months after the relaunch and came when a lot of people were pretty burned out by the options in the game at that time. Having gotten most of the relevant content into farm mode myself, I can say that the next update definitely needs to come along faster than the last one.

That put me to thinking: Is there an ideal patch schedule for games? Is there a sweet spot with enough time to develop new content and not enough time for people to get bored with what's there? Should it be all about the content when it's done, or should it be a fast cadence even if things need to be tweaked later?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Massively's Mike Foster prefers to level by running dungeons. Unfortunately for him, TERA has several dead zones in which characters are too high to queue for one dungeon but too low to queue for the next. Massively's Mike Foster is still on the hunt for epic gear and items good enough to get him ready for World of Warcraft's lower tier of raid instances. Tonight, he's continuing his sometimes-frustrating habit of healing pickup-group heroic dungeons in the hopes of sweet loot drops. Perhaps he'll end up with a talented, over-geared group that clears dungeons in seconds. Perhaps he'll end up with a Death Knight tank who doesn't know he has more than one presence. Either way, it's going to be an adventure.

Tune in for the action at 7:00 p.m. EST.

If you had fond memories of Sevencore during its brief original run, you'll be happy to know that the game is getting a new lease on life via Ignited Games. Whether or not it will go better than the game's first go-round remains to be seen, but the beta is set to last until January 13th of next year.

Otherwise, it's been a quiet week for betas, almost as if some major holiday took place over the week. War Thunder expanded its Ground Forces beta for more players, and Black Desert plans on adding a new region during its next beta test. It's region-locked, for the record.

Oh yeah, and we also have that full list of games in testing just past the break as we always do, in case none of the above stories meets with your particular tastes. As always, let us know if something added an active cash shop without our noticing or otherwise switched beta phases.

I've been rooting for City of Steam ever since it was first announced, mostly due to my sheer love of the steampunk genre. We've got high fantasy and gritty sci-fi games galore, but steampunk has been largely neglected in the realm of gaming.

That's why it was so disheartening to hear that City of Steam's first incarnation (of which I spoke rather highly when I saw it at PAX East in early 2013) would be shutting down after only about five months of opening its doors to players. It was a bold move for Mechanist Games to make the jump to self-publishing, and when I saw the game featured on Kongregate, I decided I'd check and see how the troubled title was holding up in its new form. The question is, does City of Steam: Arkadia manage to stoke the fires or is it just a bunch of hot air?

                                Final Fantasy XIV
Thanks to what Square-Enix has called a "prodigious amount of gil in circulation" on certain Final Fantasy XIV worlds, it appears as though new players and those returning from a break are priced completely out of the housing market. In the interest of getting the system under control, Square announced yesterday that it will be dramatically reducing the price of land across numerous servers.

According to the announcement, land pricing for legacy worlds will be adjusted to match land pricing of non-legacy worlds. This will result in land values on certain worlds being reduced by 2.5 to 5 times their current value over the course of several weeks. Additionally, Square plans to "re-evaluate" the final price of land across all worlds sometime in late January.

Check out the full post to see which worlds have which pricing and how values are about to change.

Little bit gone, little bit not yet, little bit probably never.
Two weeks ago, you might recall, I ranted about using random rolls as a mechanic of resolution when roleplaying in MMOs. For those of you who can't be bothered to go back and read the whole thing now (which I totally understand; you probably have holiday games burning a hole in your pocket), the core point was that random rolls don't actually tie to anything for resolution and wind up coming off as an obvious and unfun kludge for the sake of random resolution.

"Well, if you're so smart, why don't you come up with alternatives?" And I did. Readers also had some wonderful suggestions and feedback in the comments last week, which make the article even more worth reading, so really, go ahead and take a look at it. This week, I'm taking a look at how you're going to resolve conflicts in roleplaying without relying on what amounts to a coin flip. And as you may have expected, they're all taking tips from tabletop games.

                                  GTA V money piles
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto Online is beset with hackers flooding the game's economy with billions of ill-gotten dollars. Kotaku reports that a networking exploit leads to "infinite amounts of cash," and that dupers have taken to gifting huge windfalls to random players. This is of course problematic since Rockstar flags accounts "holding obscene amounts of money" during its banning sweeps.

The company has yet to offer a comment on or a fix for the issue. Meanwhile, some players have taken to hard resetting their consoles so that the gifted money doesn't save.

Yes, we just used the tired Doge meme. Deal with it. Late last week, I sat down to chat with Trove's Creative Director, Andrew Krausnick about all the work their small team's done on the game since opening it up to an NDA-less Alpha. Before the nice long deserved break at Trion's San Francisco offices, Andrew and I went over everything the team's added in the past couple of weeks since we last took a look at Trove.
