For Final Fantasy VII, Timing was Everything

Cover Story: How FFVII was the right game at the right time to spark a revolution.

Y

ou can find as many opinions about Final Fantasy VII as there were people who played it -- and considering the game went triple-platinum, that's an awful lot of opinions. You might even find multiple opinions about the game from the same person. For example, I loved the game the first time I played it, grew weary of it as time went by, and ultimately came back around to a sort of measured respect.

The battles with FFVII's devastatingly powerful WEAPONs owed their inspiration to the likes of FFI's Warmech and FFV's Omega Weapon.

Steam Greenlight's Solution For Weeding Out Fakes Borders on Excessive

Steam Greenlight

The much-vaunted Steam Greenlight opened for business last week, and immediately there was a strong response. After only a day there were already 2.3 million votes registered for the 622 games submitted to the service, giving us a glimpse of the monumental task Steam's approval team has been faced with in the past. A pair of problems also emerged pretty quickly.

Discoverability was a major issue -- it's more challenging than it should be to find the best Greenlight has to offer. The other problem is that not every submission has been a legitimate one. For days it wasn't difficult to stumble upon listings for Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, or something equally fake but far more offensive, like WTC Plane Simulator. Users have been called upon to report submissions that don't belong on Greenlight, but Valve has now implemented a more effective, albeit controversial, method for stopping these games from ever getting onto users' screens: all submissions now require a $100 donation to the Child's Play charity.

How Final Fantasy VII Got Me (And Everyone Else) Into RPGs

Cover Story: Final Fantasy VII may not have been our first RPG, but it was one of the first to really matter.

I

n a way, Final Fantasy VII was my first RPG. For me, and millions of others, it was the game that truly made me a fan of the genre.

Though critical darling Final Fantasy VI was my "real" first RPG, It was Cloud and company who got me buying every single Square game during the 32-bit era, because they were the ones to show me that a videogame could exist on a scale that I hadn't been able to conceive of until that point. After playing Final Fantasy VII, RPGs finally "clicked" with me. I know I'm not alone.
