PAX Prime 2012 Contest: StreetPass with 1UP and Win New Super Mario Bros. 2!

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 05:22 PM PDT

You'll find all four 1UP editors at many places during this year's PAX -- in fact, we've assembled a handy list! But due to our crazy schedules, you'll rarely find us all at a single location. To help celebrate our elusiveness, we've decided to put together a little contest for PAX Prime attendees who have the skills and sheer willpower to hunt us down -- digitally, mind you. Here's how you can win your very own code for New Super Mario Bros. 2:

  • Streetpass with all four members of the 1UP edit team. That includes Jeremy Parish, Jose Otero, Marty Sliva, and Bob Mackey. Note that their Miis will be wearing uniquely silly hats, so if you've somehow captured us in the past, you'll have to do it all over again. And if you're not sure it's really us, don't worry; our Miis will be sure to include something 1UP-related in their message.
  • Take pictures of your amazing feat, throw them into a user blog post, and contact one of the four editors (your choice!) via 1UP's private message system. If you're one of the first three to catch us all, you'll be the proud owner of a digital copy of New Super Mario Bros. 2! Note: Any attempted kidnappings, 3DS thefts, or Mii forgeries will be frowned upon.

That's all there is to it. Happy hunting, 1UP readers!

The Penny Arcade Expo is set to launch this weekend, and the city of Seattle preparing itself for an onslaught of all things gaming. Of course, 1UP is going to be there in full force to cover this celebration of gaming culture, and we wanted to give you a rundown of all the events we're going to be a part of, including a GameWorks meet-up with IGN/GameSpy, a Retronauts panel, and a classic game room takeover. We're looking forward to meeting hanging out with you at these events, but even if you can't make it to any of them, don't hesitate to stop us on the show floor and say hi.

Friday, August 31 - 1UP/IGN/GameSpy Shindig @ GameWorks

On Friday night from 6pm-10pm, 1UP, IGN, and GameSpy editors are going to be hanging out at the GameWorks just across the street from the convention center (1151 7th Ave), and we'd love to get a chance to meet each and every one of you! Yes, especially you! Just in case you don't know what we look like -- Jeremy dresses well, Jose is tall, Bob has a lot of hair, and Marty will be the one drinking heavily. Stop by, grab a beer, and talk to us about how awesome Breaking Bad is.

Saturday, September 1 - Retronauts Classic Game Room Takeover

Blood Knights Aims to Bring Co-Op Back to the Couch

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:47 PM PDT

With all of the to-do about Lara Croft's recent reformation (and the many shameful comments that followed), people seemed to completely overlook 2010's Guardian of Light, an isometric, co-op Tomb Raider adventure that offered a great mix of action and Zelda-ish puzzles. I totally dug it, and someone out there must have been paying attention to my years-old opinions, as a representative for the upcoming digital release Blood Knights directly compared their game to the Tomb Raider title I enjoyed a few summers back. I'm not one to take PR sound bites without a grain of salt, but my hour-long glimpse of Blood Knights at least proved that Deck 13 understands their inspiration -- to a point, anyway.

Like Guardian of Light, Blood Knight provides two players with differing skills: Jeremy serves as the melee character while Alysa uses projectile attacks. As you could probably guess from the title, the paper-thin story focuses heavily on vampires, which gives our protagonists an excuse to use blood-sucking as a vital combat skill. Since none of your opponents drop health items, the only way to recover involves slowly draining them dry, an act that leaves your character susceptible to enemy attacks. And if you ever need a quick fix, a co-op partner can always share some of their own blood for a quick fix.

StreetPass Fever: How Nintendo Found Its Community Voice

Cover Story: Social features function as the heart and soul of the 3DS.

I

f you go to the website streetpassnetwork.com, you'll see a list of close to 150 StreetPass groups spread out across the world. These groups leverage the missed potential of Nintendo 3DS' StreetPass functionality to provide regular meetups for players to hang out, exchange data, and play games. You see, in Japan, StreetPasses are easy to come by. Whether it's the close proximity, the reach of Nintendo, or a combination of the two, Japan is generally a hotbed for 3DS players, and as such, it's not uncommon to fill up your 3DS with 10 StreetPasses on a normal day. But depending on where you live in North America, you might only get the chance to StreetPass people regularly if you go searching for it at a gaming convention or a GameStop.

Fortunately, there are people out there, such as Joshua Lynsen, who saw this problem and wanted to fix it. "I'd like to say the notion of StreetPass Network came to me all at once in some brilliant moment of inspiration. Instead, it came to me in pieces," Lynsen, the founder of StreetPass Network, said.
