MMOHut Weekly Recap #87 May 27 – Born to Fire, Bullet Run, Marvel Heroes, & More

Posted: 30 May 2012 03:49 PM PDT

A quick look and discussion for every major announcement and update during the week! This week we discussed updates from the following games: Born of Fire, Bullet Run, Marvel Heroes, World of Warplanes, League of Legends, Digimon Masters, World of Tanks, Brawl Busters and Mythos Global. The biggest news this week comes from Gazillion Entertainment regarding their upcoming super hero mmo titled Marvel Heroes. The game was first announced over a year ago but just recently the first gameplay trailer was released. The games storyline is being written by one of the official writers who wrote The Ultimate Spider Man and The New Avengers.  Currently it doesn’t appear that you will be able to make your own custom super hero but instead must choose from one of the iconic Marvel heroes. For some reason that makes me feel like the game might have a more Diablo/Path of Exile feel to it where the character is preset but customizable through loot and power selections. You can view all the individual news articles mention over at the MMOHut.com News section.

Path of Exile Early Look at the Shadow Class (High Level) – Gameplay Commentary

Posted: 30 May 2012 03:26 PM PDT

To Learn More About the Game, Check out our Path of Exile Page.

Path of Exile is a 3D Action RPG MMO published by Grinding Gear Games. It’s play-style is very similar to games such as Diablo and Torchlight. Unlike other games in the genre however, players are not bound by the specific class they choose at the start. Instead after choosing their class, they can freely choose skills and most weapons (depending on initial class) to suit their play-style. This allows them to completely change how a certain class is played. Path of Exile uses an enormous passive skill tree that allows players to fully customize their character’s stats. In this video we get an early look at the Shadow class, the newest class available in PoE. The Shadow class uses Dexterity and Intellect to deal out quick strikes while also laying down traps and debuffing enemies in large aoe areas. To learn more about Path of Exile out the official MMOHut Path of Exile page which includes a detailed review, tons of screenshots, and additional videos.

Realm of the Titans is a 3D Moba style MMO published by Aeria Games – the same company behind Eden Eternal, Grand Fantasia, Shaiya, Last Chaos, Lime Odyssey Online, Metal Assault and numerous other titles. As a Moba style game, Realm of the Titans plays a lot like League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, and Rise of Immortals. The game doesn’t have nearly as many playable heroes as League of Legends, but does have several unique features which some fans of the genre may really like. Exclusive Heroes and Generals Gameplay – First Look with Developer Commentary

Posted: 30 May 2012 02:51 PM PDT

To Learn More About the Game, Check out our Heroes & Generals Page.

Heroes & Generals is a 3D MMOFPS published by Reto-Moto. Heroes & Generals is a unique blend of MMOFPS and MMORTS games. The game world is persistent, which is generally not done for an FPS game. Players may specialize their character to become a war hero on the front lines, or pursue the path of strategy as a general. The action content allows players to ride in vehicles and planes, in addition to being on foot. Both game modes are interconnected; what happens in the action mode carries over into the strategy mode, allowing players to keep tabs on things like supply-lines and production. In this video I interview the game director and find out just what Reto-Moto has planned for this unique shooter. To learn more about Heroes & Generals check out the official MMOHut Heroes & Generals page which includes a detailed review, tons of screenshots, and additional videos.

Clash Of The Capitals Begins In Juggernaut

Posted: 30 May 2012 11:42 AM PDT

Mail.Ru has announced a new event for Juggernaut players.

The twin cities of Britzoli and Rockfort have been rediscovered, and adventurers are being called to help retake these cities from encroaching forces. New trade routes have now appeared, and players must choose one of these factions by speaking with Captain Roqul or Captain Tribus to sail the seas and face new adventures as they seek to reclaim the lost cities.

Mail.Ru also publishes RiotZone.

JUGGERNAUT UNVEILS CLASH OF THE CAPITALS

Britzoli Versus Rockfort: Who To Choose?

Hamburg, May 30, 2012. Leading publisher Mail.RU Games announced today the rediscovery of two thriving cities in their successful Free-to-play role-playing game, Juggernaut. Warriors of Haradan are preparing to trek to these cities in droves, but be prepared to defend yourself! Juggernauts can head over to www.juggergame.com where players can register and play for free.

Juggernaut is a world where myths come alive, where the truth can be more fanciful than rumor. The taverns and marketplaces are abuzz with the most exciting news: explorers of two factions have re-discovered twin cities, Britzoli and Rockfort, and have called back to the Haradan mainland for assistance in re-taking the capital cities from encroaching forces.

For many difficult months, the cities of Britzoli and Rockfort have been cut off from the rest of Haradan society. News from the two metropolises hardly ever reach the mainland, and both Arq and Kraen’s fates were uncertain to their followers. Scouts were sent to find alternative routes to the two cities, and now parties have successfully created new trade routes!

Adventurers are flooding to return to the two capitals, though returning these cities to civilization won’t be without a fight. Choose a faction by speaking with Captain Roqul or Captain Tribus to begin your adventure. Both await to ferry warriors across the dangerous seas, and face enemies both on the water and after landing. Bloody battles await, and decisions must be made: whose side are you on?

MapleStory Passes 35 Million Character Mark

Posted: 30 May 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Nexon America has announced that in addition to passing 9.2 million registered users, MapleStory has also seen over 35 million characters created.

MapleStory is in the middle of celebrating its seventh anniversary in North America, including a “Class Reunion” event on June 1 and a Bounty Hunter event starting June 6.

Nexon America CEO Daniel Kim commented on the latest success:

"We have amazing players. The number of characters created tells us that a lot of our players have taken advantage of the depth and richness 'MapleStory' delivers. In 2005, when we first introduced the 'MapleStory' into the North American market, our free-to-play model was quickly written off by many in the gaming industry as an Asian model that will 'never work.' It was obvious after we quickly added millions of loyal and enthusiastic players to our customer base that free-to-play would work in North America. I believe that 'MapleStory's' performance convinced many in the West to adopt a similar free-to-play business model."

Nexon also publishes Mabinogi and Dungeon Fighter Online.

'MapleStory,' surpasses 35 million characters created

First successful North American free-to-play MMO, 'MapleStory,' surpasses 35 million characters created, 9.2 million registered users

Nexon America's "Maplestory" not only has a lot of players – 9.2 million registered users in North America – but those players are multiplying quickly as the number of characters created in the game has surpassed 35 million.

"MapleStory" is known as the first commercially successful free-to-play massively multiplayer online game (MMO) in North America. "MapleStory's" success has paved the way for a new generation of online games that have successfully turned to the free-to-play, microtransaction-based business model.

"MapleStory's" deeply immersive, vibrant 2-D world creates social environment that is accessible and friendly for any gamer. The game has attracted an enormous audience around the world thanks to its colorful characters, expansive world and a myriad of adventures. "MapleStory" can be downloaded for free on PC and versions of the franchise can be played on Facebook and mobile platforms as well.

The game has been celebrating its seventh anniversary of service in North America throughout the May and is holding a variety of events and promotions to thank players for their loyalty and dedication.

"We have amazing players. The number of characters created tells us that a lot of our players have taken advantage of the depth and richness 'MapleStory' delivers," said Nexon America CEO Daniel Kim. "In 2005, when we first introduced the 'MapleStory' into the North American market, our free-to-play model was quickly written off by many in the gaming industry as an Asian model that will 'never work.' It was obvious after we quickly added millions of loyal and enthusiastic players to our customer base that free-to-play would work in North America. I believe that 'MapleStory's' performance convinced many in the West to adopt a similar free-to-play business model."

So far this year, new content added to "MapleStory" includes a war with evil invading space aliens, a time traveling mission, and the revamp of a variety of vintage characters.

Diablo III (KR) – Government raided Blizzard offices

Posted: 30 May 2012 07:18 AM PDT

[Source] Basically, the Asian server for Diablo III is located in South Korea, accommodating for regions such as Taiwan as well. However, due to the enormous amount of traffic, the bandwidth hit its maximum, with thousands of gamers from both countries unable to log in. This caused many, and I do mean many, unhappy customers asking for a refund from Blizzard. Of course, Blizzard refused.

Now, the Korean government has officially stepped in after the complaints escalated beyond control, which led to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) "raided the firm's Seoul office Monday and secured related documents and other evidence with which it will determine whether Blizzard broke the law." Although Blizzard announced that the capacity for the Asian server will be increased by 35%, frequent server down-times also led to a separate outcry for refunds to be made.

Personally, I am in the process of seeking a refund for my digital copy (Americas server), bought straight from Blizzard. Reasons which I provided include the unstable server, latency, server down time right after work hours, auction house down times and a couple more. I do not suppose explaining that the game mechanics sucks will aid my cause. Once again, DO NOT BUY DIABLO III, but I "might" be back for the expansion.

Champions Online MMORPG Review

Posted: 30 May 2012 04:01 AM PDT

Champions Online is a 3D, superhero-themed MMORPG.  Create a unique hero using the game's amazing character creation system and play through the game's well-crafted story arcs.  Champions Online boasts a powerful graphics engine that makes use of cel-shading and other interesting features to present a unique visual style.

Publisher: Cryptic Studios
Playerbase: High
Graphics: High Quality
Type: MMORPG
EXP Rate: Medium
PvP: Strong scenarios / PvP regions
Filesize: 2500 MB

Website: http://www.champions-online.com

Pros: +In-depth character creation. +Unique colorful artstyle. +Fast-paced, action-oriented gameplay. +Tons of variety between characters.

Cons: -Odd use of instancing & save points. -Balance issues. -Few missions to complete, lots of grind.

Champions Online is a 3D superhero themed fantasy MMORPG set in Millennium City. The game used to be pay to play with a free trial, but officially went fully free to play with a cash shop and subscriber option on January 25, 2011. For gamers with a love for deep character customization and fast, smooth gameplay, the Champions Online is definitely a solid choice.

There are no classes in Champions Online; players are free to choose any power from any powerset to realize whatever vision they have in mind for their characters. These powers are organized into theme frameworks, which are listed below:

Might: Your standard super-strength powerset. For characters looking to imitate the biggest and the burliest heavy hitters, though your character need not appear large!

Munitions: A framework containing just about every conventional firearm imaginable, from rocket launchers, to gatling guns, to shotguns, to grenades, and to a number of very cool looking "gun kata" style dual pistol attacks.

Martial Arts: Choose from unarmed, claws, single blade, or dual blade within the martial arts frameworks, each with unique advantages.

Sorcery: From black magic to white magic, from primal sorcery to arcane sorcery, this set contains a great deal of unique attacks and area-centric buffs. Plus, the arcane bolts just look cool!

Supernatural: Whether you choose to be a chain-swinging demon with toxic breath, or a creepy creature with supernatural, shredding claws, this set is a grab-bag for every imaginable kind of weirdness.

Telepathy: Powerful crowd-control, the best heals in the game, and arguably the best AoE attack in the game. Telepathy has a number of solid powers to choose from!

Telekinesis: A thematic favorite, TK is a set for people who want to have psychic blades, a la Psylocke from X-men, or even a Protoss zealot from Starcraft. Some of the best melee damage in the game is in these powers!

Gadgeteering: Orbital cannons, laser guns, robot minions, photon mines, shrink rays, resurrection serums… gauntlet chainsaws? Yep. It's all here.

Power Armor: You are Iron Man. Just don't name yourself that. Make a suit of awesome powered armor and go nuts. Or make a lizard person that shoots missles out of their chest for some reason. The choice is yours!

Archery: A number of surprisingly high-tech looking bow attacks, from arrows with explosives tied to them, to arrows that explode in a pretty sphere of energy. All archery attacks can be used and charged while moving!

Energy Projection: From flinging flames, to ice bolts, to lightining bolts, or force bolts. It's all in these four powersets. Set stuff on fire, encase enemies in icy prisons, place forcefields on your allies, or just annihilate whole armies with columns of electricity.

Darkness: Summon clouds of fear, attack enemies with blasts of pure shadow, lick at your foes with dark tendrils, drain life, and create nether voids. This set pretty much speaks for itself.

Celestial: The consummate "healer" set, many of the attacks in Celestial are pretty balls and beams of light, which can either damage enemies or heal friends.

Mists of Pandaria Cooking Preview
The recent beta builds have updated and added several cooking quests, most of which take place in the Halfhill Market in the Valley of the Four Winds. The Nomi line takes advantage of the new Friendship system that is similar to reputation. In order to begin questing with Nomi, you must first complete the To Be a Master quest and earn Ironpaw Token x 100 to purchase Cooking School Bell. The quest requires you to have 600 cooking in every specialization.

The Replenishing the Pantry quest allows you to turn in a Bundle of Groceries every day in exchange for an Ironpaw Token, which is the new Chef's Award in Mists of Pandaria. It will be used to purchase cooking ingredients from Nam Ironpaw, as well as a few novelty items which cost Ironpaw Token x 50.

Each cooking specialization has an individual level which determines which recipes you can learn for that specialization. Your highest level specialization will be your cooking level, which will allow you to learn any non specialization recipe that requires a certain cooking level. You can see the recipes that have been added so far on WoWDB.

We love the double-discovery of finding a present and then unwrapping it, but we don't think it requires a physical item you have to find and keep in your bags to get the same effect. From now on you'll just be able to inherently identify all your items, no need to carry scrolls. Your character in Diablo III is just that badass now. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Legendary Item Quality
Who doesn't want Legendary items to be the best items in the game?
Players shouldn't, really. I mean if you want all end-game characters to look the same and have on the exact same items by having a single #1 best item in the game, it's a good way to get there. It's a lot easier, to be sure, to just chase a single BiS item, but we really don't believe it should be a lot easier. It should be difficult to find and judge and compare and build characters out of a mix of randomized items, not just go after a tier set.

Hah. Well, no one is standing back, every designer is in the thick of it working on future updates, patches, hotfixes, etc. I think it really comes down to a perception issue that color quality differentiation and name have made. If the items were called Uniques, as they were in Diablo II, would you assume they were the best items in the game? Maybe, if they're the hardest to find. But I think the point is that the hardest to find items are not in fact Legendaries, but perfect Rare items. It's less intuitive to not have clear separations of item power through name and color, and that's tripping people up to be sure.

But that's not the issue here, the issue here is the legendaries are worse than rares and blues. And that should not be. Please accept that THIS is what players want. For once in my life I am VERY comfortable speaking for everyone. We're accustomed to the term "Legendary" actually MEANING something.
And we've stated we plan to buff them and add more unique affixes.

I don't know ... we're looking to buff them. Whether we guarantee a blue item dropping in the same difficulty/Act can't have higher DPS than a Legendary is still a judgment call we've yet to make. It'd sure make more sense to people who are stuck on item colors telling them which should be better, but whether it's the best for game's itemization I think is still up in the air. Giving players a clear 'best item' is not necessarily the best decision for the game and itemization landscape.

Auction House and Item Drop Rates
I have ZERO chance to find a legendary, because the server has now adjusted the rates on the fly, because others have already found it.
That's not what was said or implied at all, sorry if it was confusing. The AH doesn't have any affect on the literal drop rates of items depending on what's available.

What I said, and what is true, is that with far more players and an increased proliferation of item trade, we have to factor in how many items are being found by players and how quickly a player can gear up by 'sourcing' items from others through trade and the convenience of the gold auction house.

If we say "a player should have X power in Y amount of time through drops" and completely ignore that the time factor can be reduced by simply having access to more drops through trading and the auction house, players would be gearing up far quicker than we've determined they should. It has nothing to do with the auction house per se, but the general ease at which players have access to more items than they would without it and us needing to keep that in mind while balancing drops. It would be rather poorly thought out if we balanced drops completely ignoring all of the ways players can gear up, and trading is certainly one of them.

Obviously everyone wants the best gear possible as quickly as possible, and us attempting to mediate that through design that takes all factors into account is not always going to be a popular notion. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Blizzard Games News Update
Pico is back with a Blizzard Games News update!

We want YOU….to join our forums

Posted: 29 May 2012 05:11 PM PDT

MMO Attack is built around the community, first and foremost. So if you’re reading this, we definitely want you to be a part of the community! Here’s a sample of some of the great benefits joining our forums offers:

Free stuff!

Oh, you haven’t heard? Well, that’s probably because you’re not on the forums yet. We have a karma system in place; the more active you are on the forums and in community events, the more karma you get. You can then trade it in for games, swag, gift cards, and other prizes.

Friends to game with

We’ve got a small but active community that loves to game together! You can often catch us pwning it up on League of  Legends, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2, just to name a few. (But don’t worry, we play on consoles too!) We’ve even got a RaidCall channel we can use for voice chat!

Gaming together is a great way to make friends with people who live across the country from  you (or even in another country!), and hey – it beats pub games, right?

Game recommendations

Bored with your existing game library? Name some games you loved and we’ll be able to recommend more that you’ll like! Our community is so diverse – ranging from PC to consoles to handhelds; tower defenses to FPSes, and everything in-between. You name it, we’ve got someone who’s played it!

Direct input into site direction

We often look to our community to gather opinions on new projects or video series that we begin around here. This community feedback really helps us in making decisions on what series to put more resources into, and as a new site we rely heavily on our existing community’s reactions to gauge what will perform best and how to draw more people in.

Since our community is still on its way up, it’s much easier to listen to individual opinions and take more into consideration.

Entertainment at any hour of the day (or night)

Our community is quite diverse – we’ve got staff and community members from across the U.S., Canada, and even Australia, spanning 5 different time zones as of now. Plus, we all have different schedules – some of us are night owls, others have to get up early for work, and some become downright nocturnal on weekends! All that adds up to mean that on any day, at any time, there’ll be someone awake and looking to waste time on the internet; forums and our Raidcall channel are the perfect places to do just that!

A 24-hour tech support line

Going off the previous point, having at least a handful of friends awake at any given time means that you always have someone to ask when you’re having computer problems, want advice on which new headset to buy,

A network of support

Many of our forums-goers are super talented and creative, and we love helping them out and watching as they help each other. Have a YouTube series you’re trying to get off the ground? We’ll be there to encourage you, help out with ideas, and spread the word.  Or maybe you’ve got a big job interview to prepare for – we’ll help out with advice, tips, or simply good vibes.

So what are you waiting for?

Join the forums today! Seriously, stop reading this cheesy post. My enthusiasm is running out.

Carmageddon to be reincarnated in 2013

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:39 PM PDT

Max Damage is making a return in 2013 thanks to a highly successful crowd-funding effort from Carmageddon’s original developer, Stainless Games.

With more than a week still to spare, Carmageddon: Reincarnation burst through its $400,000 target meaning the remake of the 1997 classic is set to appear in February 2013 on PC, with Mac, PSN, XBLA and potentially even Linux conversions to appear later.

“After years of negotiation, the original founders of Stainless recently bought back ALL the rights to Carmageddon,” reads Stainless Games’ Kickstarter page. “So now it's back in its rightful home, we've embarked on the journey that will reboot the brand.”

Below is Stainless Games’ original video pitch, but check their Kickstarter page for further updates…

The Tactical Combat Of The Elder Scrolls Online

Posted: 29 May 2012 01:00 PM PDT

The Elder Scrolls Online has a multi-pronged strategy to separate its combat from other MMOs on the market. With an emphasis on fewer, more powerful skills and rewarding tactical maneuvers like creating synergy bonuses between two players, the team at Zenimax Online Studios is attempting to create a seamless transition between player-versus-monster combat and player-versus-player fights. Game Informer's Adam Biessener sat down with lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle, creature combat designer Maria Aliprando, and lead PvP designer Brian Wheeler to talk about what will stand out in the combat mechanics of The Elder Scrolls Online. We have separated the discussion into two parts: the first video focuses on top-level features, while the second video dives in deep to the mechanics and is recommended for those more familiar with MMOs.

Check out the more advanced video below to learn about the team's approach to crowd control, the impact of weapon choice, the adaptability of classes,  and the power of "ultimate attacks."

Max Payne 3 PC Specs Updated, Includes Highest Benchmark

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:56 AM PDT

Want to run Max Payne 3 on its highest settings? Prepare to shell out a fair chunk for it.

We already knew the expected Max Payne 3 PC specs, and they weren’t pulling the punches. But Rockstar decided that wasn’t enough, and has tweaked them a little more.

Usually we’d get annoyed by a fortnight delay between PC and console versions of a game – it’s developed on PC, damn it! – but it seems Rockstar has been putting the extra days to good use, fine-tuning and overpowering the visuals of the Max Payne sequel we’ve all been waiting for.

There’s a broad range of requirements here, so check them out and see where your system comes in:

LOWEST TESTED SPECS

  • Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
  • Intel Dual Core 2.4 GHZ or AMD Dual Core 2.6 GHZ, or better
  • 2GB System RAM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce 8600 GT 512MB RAM or AMD Radeon™ HD 3400 512MB RAM

LOW RECOMMENDED SPECS

  • Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
  • Intel Dual Core 3GHz or AMD equivalent
  • 3GB System RAM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce 450 512MB RAM or AMD Radeon™ HD 4870 512MB RAM

HIGH RECOMMENDED SPECS

  • Windows 7/Vista (32 or 64 bit)
  • Intel i7 Quad Core 2.8Ghz or AMD equivalent
  • 3GB System RAM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce 480 1GB RAM or AMD Radeon™ HD 5870 1GB RAM

HIGHEST TESTED SPECS

  • Windows 7/Vista (64 bit)
  • Intel i7 3930K 6 Core x 3.06 GHZ or AMD FX8150 8 Core x 3.6 GHZ
  • 16GB System RAM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680 2GB RAM or AMD Radeon™ HD 7970 3GB RAM

We have to admit, even our rigs don’t fit in the highest tested specs – so if you’ve got one of them new-fangled GTX 680s then you can already count yourself as kitted out better than us. You git.
