Dell Plans To Be Ready on Windows 8 Launch Day With Enterprise Tablets

Windows 8Microsoft is rolling a hard six with their tablet strategy in Windows 8, and while it might be a hard sale with iPad crazy consumers, at least in the Enterprise they have a fighting chance. Dell knows this, and plans to be ready to go with tablet offerings for businesses on Windows 8 launch day. The information came from a Bloomberg interview conducted last week in which CEO Michael Dell praised the new Microsoft OS, and claims demand will be strong for a "secure Windows tablet that works with all Windows applications".

Given that he put extra emphasis on "application compatibility", that leads us to believe x86 based slates will be first out of the gate, however its possible ARM will be available as an option as well. In a separate interview Bloomberg was also able to confirm that Dell would continue to develop and release tablets and smartphones based on Android, but is pinning most of their tablet hopes on Windows 8.

That's probably a sound strategy considering that being the "industry leader" when it comes to Android tablets is still a lousy place to be these days.

EVGA Releases New Details on Upcoming 7 Series Motherboard

EVGAIt was pretty much a foregone conclusion that EVGA would be launching something in the 7 series to serve the influx of new Ivy Bridge upgraders, and Techpowerup got a sneak peak at what they have in mind. They didn't name the board per say, but from the looks of the photo above, the Z77 FTW would be a safe guess. 

The board appears to feature four DDR3 memory slots, five PCI-Express x16 slots, and while it's not confirmed, it is suspected at least two of these will be PCIe 3.0. Always welcome additions include PCIe disable switches, a debug LED, angled 24-pin ATX power input, and CMOS reset button just in-case you get in over your head while overclocking.

The 8 available SATA ports shown feature four 6.0 Gbps and four 3.0 Gbps inputs, along with Gigabit Ethernet, and what appears to be a Thunderbolt port. Thunderbolt is considerably less useful at this point than the USB 3 ports right beside it, but it's always nice to have options. 

Ivy Bridge Lenovo Notebook Spotted For Pre-Order on Amazon

LenovoA recent batch of leaked slides have all but confirmed Ivy Bridge's release date of April 29th, and as expected, pre-orders are beginning to pop up. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 will be one of the first notebooks out of the gate featuring Intel's 3rd generation Core Processor, and it's no slouch either. The standard $999 model being shown on Amazon will feature the 2.3 GHz Intel i7-3610QM Processor, along with a generous 8 GB of RAM.

Additional specs for the machine include a 750 GB 5400 rpm hard drive, a 14 inch display (no word on the resolution), and will be powered by a discrete NVIDIA GT630M graphics chip with 1GB of dedicated memory. At 1.3 inches thick and 4.85 pounds it's a bit chunky when compared to some Ultrabooks, but it certainly has plenty of hardware to justify the heft.

If you plan on upgrading to Windows 8 down the road you may want to hold off and make sure the display meets metro's minimum snap requirement of 1366x768, but otherwise this looks like a solid early offering.
