Pokemon Black and White Version 2 Headed Westward More Quickly Than Usual

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 03:23 AM PST

Pokemon Black and White Version 2

Following the surprising news that the latest handheld Pokémon RPGs will be a pair of DS titles known as Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2, Nintendo of America has already gone ahead and announced a loose release date for the two games: fall 2012.

In Japan the pair will be available in June, more than a year and a half after Black and White originally debuted there. Those of us in the rest of the world didn’t get our hands on BW until last March, almost six months after it was made available to Japanese gamers. The handheld Pokémon RPGs have traditionally taken their time in making it to the U.S. — Gold and Silver were out in November 1999 in Japan but didn’t make it here until the following October, Diamond and Pearl had us waiting seven months, and Platinum was a six-month wait.

With Black and White Version 2 scheduled to be out in fall in the U.S. and “autumn 2012″ in Europe, we’re looking at a gap of only three to six months — we can’t rule out a December release, as Nintendo didn’t shy away from debuting Mario Kart 7 then last year. That’s significant quicker than the nearly year-long wait we’ve been forced to endure at times and is yet another indication The Pokemon Company is doing things differently this time around.

Release date and title aside, we still don’t have any real details. The official Japanese website isn’t exactly overflowing with information and the English site isn’t any more helpful, leaving us to wonder about the significance of “Version 2″ being chosen over the widely-expected “Pokémon Grey” release. It could simply be that grey was deemed too dull (it’s not exactly crystal or platinum), or perhaps it was a purely financial decision — release two enhanced remakes/director’s cut versions as opposed to one and you stand to make extra money off of repeat buyers you otherwise would not.

There was initially some speculation that Version 2 could be a sequel to Black and White, although the fact that they are called Version 2 and not simply Black and White 2 suggests to me that is not the case. The English Pokémon site mentions that “new mysteries await” players, which could be a tease of a brand-new story or, more likely, some new content like Platinum’s Distortion World.

If this is just the usual Platinum-style treatment, which would not be any sort of surprise, the decision to release Version 2 on DS (and not 3DS) goes back to being the most interesting thing about it. As Jeremy noted over the weekend, it’s not such a crazy idea — the install base of DS is significantly larger than that of the 3DS, giving Version 2 a much larger audience to be sold to. And with 3DS selling well on its own right now without the assistance of an exclusive Pokémon game, there isn’t any reason to rush one out for the platform when that ace in the hole could come in handy a year or two from now. Of course, as Nintendo was sure to reinforce in today’s press release, “The games can also be played in 2D on Nintendo 3DS systems,” so it’s not as if 3DS owners can’t enjoy the same experience as DS owners.

New Kinect Game Teaches You How to Defend Yourself

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 01:28 AM PST

Self-Defense Training Camp

There have already been a handful of fitness games released for Kinect, including one — UFC Personal Trainer — that lets you get in shape using exercises inspired by real-life mixed martial artists. Ubisoft seems to have found a new niche in the physical fitness space and will look to capitalize on it this holiday with a game that teaches you self-defense.

The simply-titled Self-Defense Training Camp was announced today and will be out in North America on November 8. It’s exclusively coming to Xbox 360 and requires Kinect.

It contains workouts and self-defense drills divided up into four categories: technique, reflexes, composure, and stamina. In addition to minigames that will help to (hopefully) improve your reflexes, also included are “meditative forms of exercise” intended to keep you calm in stressful situations.

Judging by the trailer, you’ll be doing things like sparring and learning how to throw knees and stop someone from strangling you. Hopefully it’s not the sort of skill that will ever prove to be useful in life, but it probably couldn’t hurt to be prepared.

Can Americans Still Make SimCity?

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 03:18 PM PST

SimCity

EA may announce a new SimCity game at the Game Developers Conference next month according to rumors spurred by the publisher’s announcement of a live-streamed event on March 6, where they promise a new Maxis game will be revealed. A related post on Facebook posed the question, “How can we change the world together? Find out when EA hosts the Game Changers event at GDC. What would you do if you had the power to change the world?”

When paired with descriptions of the game lifted from Maxis job ads looking for, “a highly talented and experienced team on an upcoming triple-A simulation style game,” the evidence seems to point to a SimCity announcement of some kind coming from the event next week. That same job ad also states that the developer is looking for someone with, “knowledge of the Xbox 360 and PS3 rendering architectures and APIs,” suggesting that the title will appear on consoles. No American developer has ever produced a console or otherwise “simplified” SimCity game that was actually playable or enjoyable.

Fans still fondly remember the Nintendo-developed SNES SimCity — particularly in Japan where few players had the chance to play it on a PC — because it managed to add a much needed layer of humor, character, and style to the iconic yet slightly bland original now known as SimCity: Classic. The series went on to inspire console and handheld sequels from Japanese developers, including SimCity 64 (N64DD), SimCity DS, and SimCity Creator (Wii). All of these titles take their immediate inspiration from the SNES version and capture at least some of its magic.

Meanwhile, in the West, EA hasn’t produced their own PC SimCity game since 2006′s disastrous SimCity Societies, which, like all other EA attempts to dumb-down the series, failed to excite fans, critics, or anyone else. In retrospect, the game ranks somewhere between SimTown and SimRefinery in annals of the franchise’s history. Even excluding Societies, EA’s treatment of the series hardly gives fans reason for hope; the publisher’s willingness to port shoddy versions of the game based on the aging SimCity 4 hardly qualifies as inspiring.

EA spent the last ten years giving SimCity fans ill-considered spin-offs and unplayable cell-phone games, why should they give this new game the benefit of the doubt? It could turn-out to be the best game yet in the series, as the unambitious (but still entertaining) Japanese SimCity games prove that it’s a matter of design and skill and not something inherent to bringing an older title with older mechanics to modern players. However, the possibility of a console SimCity only heightens concerns, as the problem the series spent the past 10 years failing to overcome stems directly from trying to simplify the game’s mechanics for the sake of reaching a wider audience like Societies, or fitting into a non-mouse/keyboard control scheme like SimCity on everything from tablets to feature phones. Nearly a decade’s worth of failures — especially in the face of the relative success of Japanese takes on the series — easily justifies preliminary skepticism towards whatever EA reveals next week.

Honorable Duty Online (CN)

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 01:26 PM PST

I know, the name of the game sounds weird, but it is exactly translated word by word. Honorable Duty Online is an upcoming shooter from China, but this is not just any game. It is developed in conjunction with the People’s Liberation Army, which for your info, is the military arm of China’s government. The game started out as a project for military personnel to hone their shooting skills, and since then it was announced Giant Interactive will be publishing the commercialized version.

Developed using actual war experience and tactics provided by military personnel, Honorable Duty Online is the one and only MMOFPS which will have the People’s Liberation Army as the core team. Similar to most shooters, there will be various PvP modes available, including story mode PvE ones going against hostile units, most probably terrorists.

The game is said to be going public so as to heighten the younger generation’s interests in the People’s Liberation Army. With that said, don’t expect Honorable Duty Online to hit the English market. I will be really, really surprised if it does.
