Feature  Saving the System II: More Failed Consoles that Went Wrong Instead of RightReturn to the video game graveyard and discover how so many young, plastic lives could have been prolonged.By: Todd Ciolek December 15, 2011 Failed game systems come in two flavors. Some are simply bad ideas, conceived in delusion and marketed in hubris. These systems, one could argue, deserve to die early and unpleasantly. Other systems aren't to blame for their downfalls. They fail because something went wrong at a higher level, and they end up the victims of a few bad decisions, misguided marketing, or the specter of internal corporate squabbling. We've covered three of these unfairly doomed systems before, and now we return to the halls of failure and the game systems that rest there. We're playing by the same rules, so we won't change a console's internal, game-playing capabilities. We'll just look at what these three game platforms could've done to succeed -- and what happened when they didn't. |
| Next Xbox Coming in 2013, Current Design Boss Replaced - Report Posted: 15 Dec 2011 03:59 PM PST One of the most influential people working on the Xbox has been replaced, according to a report. General Manager of Entertainment Design, Don Coyner, has not left Microsoft but is "no longer leading the design and experience group for Xbox," according to Cnet, which learned the news from two sources inside Microsoft. He is reportedly being replaced in that role by Emma Williams, a fellow General Manager and one who was involved with the creation of the new Xbox 360 dashboard released earlier this month. |
| Actually, You Can't Easily Switch PSN Accounts on Vita Posted: 15 Dec 2011 02:32 PM PST Having already contradicted itself once before, Sony now says it is not possible to switch between PlayStation Network accounts on a PlayStation Vita without a factory reset. Catalogs handed out at a Vita event in Japan earlier this month contained an FAQ, and among the questions it answered was one regarding the ability to use more than one PSN account on the same system. It stated a factory reset was needed before another account could be logged into, thereby eliminating any convenient way of using multiple accounts on the same system. This is important not just to those who want to share the system with a fellow PSN account holder, but also those who wish to create a foreign PSN account for the purpose of accessing digital content not available in their region. |
| Platinum's Anarchy Reigns Delayed Until Mid-2012 Posted: 15 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST It probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise given how close we are to January, but Anarchy Reigns will not be out next month as previously planned. Sega today announced the latest title from Platinum Games has been delayed until July. Anarchy is a multiplayer beat-em-up from a studio that has focused on offline, single-player experiences in the past. The game has been compared to Power Stone crossed with Bayonetta (which Platinum developed along with Vanquish, MadWorld, and Infinite Space) and was originally scheduled to come out this fall before being pushed back until January. |
| The Witcher 2 Developer Going After Pirates Posted: 15 Dec 2011 11:54 AM PST CD Projekt, the parent company of The Witcher 2 developer CD Projekt Red, has confirmed it has threatened legal action against those who pirate the game following a report that it was seeking settlements in excess of $1,000. Last week TorrentFreak reported that numerous people in Germany have claimed they received a settlement proposal of 911.80 Euros (about $1,187) from a law firm on behalf of CD Projekt. It was alleged that these people had pirated a copy of The Witcher 2, which was released in May. As you'd expect, many of these individuals professed their innocence as they were faced with a potential lawsuit if they didn't pay up. |

Argonian warrior vs. Dunmer thief When Thierry Nguyen and I reviewed Skyrim, we'd collectively sunk about 120 hours into the game. A month later, we've played the game for about 120 hours... each. And we're still nowhere near being done! This game is just stupidly big, and to prove it the two of us will be going head-to-head live tomorrow to see who can make their way across the map the fastest. |
| Nintendo Japan to Fix Borked Skyward Sword Save Games Posted: 15 Dec 2011 10:21 AM PST Update: Nintendo of America thankfully also has plans to resolve this issue. Like in Japan, a program will be released that can repair save games, but a launch date for that is not known at this time. Alternatively, those who can't connect to the Internet can send their save data to Nintendo to be fixed; more information on that option is available by calling 1-800-255-3700. Original Story: Should you be among those unfortunate enough to have encountered the game-breaking bug in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, you may not have to restart your game from scratch if you live in Japan. |
