AMD Releases CAP3 Profiles for Catalyst 11.11

Posted: 11 Dec 2011 04:16 PM PST

Serious SamAMD and Nvidia driver teams have been putting in some pretty serious overtime trying to keep up with the flood of new titles hitting the market just before the holidays, and a third profile update just went live for AMD's less than one month old Catalyst 11.11. Just in-case you'd lost count, in addition to the three profile updates, AMD has also released three separate beta drivers to fix various other issues with specific titles. If you like to be on the bleeding edge, make sure you have Catalyst 11.11C, along with the just released CAP3.

CAP3 includes the following improvements:

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Improves CrossFire performance

- Saints Row 3 (DirectX 9 version): Improves CrossFire performance

- Serious Sam 3: Improves CrossFire performance

- Java Control Panel: Fixes black screen corruption seen on single and multi GPU configurations when Anti-Aliasing is forced on through the Catalyst Control Center

Intel Drops 19 Desktop CPUs from Clarkdale, Lynnfield, and Sandy Bridge

Posted: 11 Dec 2011 03:26 PM PST

CPUIntel is shaking up its CPU lineup a bit, and while some of the older parts on the chopping block make sense, even some newer Sandy Bridge chips are getting the axe. A total of 19 CPU's from Clarkdale, Lynnfield, and Sandy Bridge are being phased out effective immediately, and any new orders from OEM's will only be filled while supply lasts.

The List includes the Pentium G6950, G6960, G620, G620T, and G840; the Core i3 540 and 2100T; the Core i5 650, 660, 670, 680, and 2300; and the Core i7 860, 870, 930, 950, 960, 980, and 990X. Some of the parts on this list are over two years old now, however the Sandy Bridge Pentium G630, G630T, and G860 are less than 4 months old.

With Ivy Bridge just around the corner the cuts weren't completely unexpected, especially with Sandy Bridge E now in the mix.

Google-Funded Study Awards Security Crown to Chrome; Firefox Comes in Last

Posted: 11 Dec 2011 05:48 AM PST

Browser vendors are constantly on the lookout for things to brag about. While just about any type of bragging rights are welcome, vendors are mostly found crowing about either speed, security or HTML5 compliance. This time it's Google's turn to break into a victory lap, for Chrome has just been crowned the most secure browser in a study conducted by Accuvant Labs (PDF).

Not that it's going to affect Google's celebrations, we'd like to point out that the study in question was commissioned by the web giant itself. Now that we have made the take-this-with-a-grain-of-salt appeal necessary with a study that ends up portraying the party that funded it in the most positive light, it's time to proceed to the details.

Accuvant Labs only considered Internet Explorer (version 9), Chrome (versions 12 and 13) and Firefox (version 5.0.1) for its research. In its 102-page report, the firm concluded that Chrome is the most secure browser of the three, with Internet Explorer and Firefox coming in second and last, respectively.

According to Accuvant, it  adopted a different approach from other similar attempts that mostly "rely on statistical analysis of vulnerability data", opting instead for a thorough analysis of anti-exploitation mechanisms baked into the concerned browsers.

"The URL blacklisting services offered by all three browsers will stop fewer attacks than will go undetected," said Accuvant in its report. "Both Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer implement state-of-the-art anti-exploitation technologies, but Mozilla Firefox lags behind without JIT hardening."

"While both Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer implement the same set of anti-exploitation technologies, Google Chrome's plug-in security and sandboxing architectures are implemented in a more thorough and comprehensive manner. Therefore, we believe Google Chrome is the browser that is most secured against attack."

Regarding the question of conflict of interest, Accuvant said, "[W]hile Google funded the research for this paper, Accuvant Labs was given a clear directive to provide readers with an objective understanding of relative browser security."

Mozilla, though, does not agree with Accuvant's findings and sees no reason to be alarmed. "Firefox includes a broad array of technologies to eliminate or reduce security threats, from platform level features like address space randomization to internal systems like our layout frame poisoning system," said , Johnathan Nightingale, director of Firefox engineering at Mozilla.

"Sandboxing is a useful addition to that toolbox that we are investigating, but no technology is a silver bullet. We invest in security throughout the development process with internal and external code reviews, constant testing and analysis of running code, and rapid response to security issues when they emerge. We're proud of our reputation on security, and it remains a central priority for Firefox."

Google Turns Chrome into Gaming Platform with NaCl

Posted: 11 Dec 2011 05:25 AM PST

Its many detractors think it is regressive, but Google is pretty sure of Native Client (NaCl), a technology that allows Chrome to run native compiled code across different OSes, being "the ideal way of putting rich content and game engines in the browser." To prove its point, Google hosted a special event at its Mountain View headquarters on December 8.

Google used the event to showcase Native Client's gaming prowess by showing off NaCl-based versions of games like the critically acclaimed Xbox 360 and PC game Bastion and Square Enix's multi-platform title Mini Ninjas. The former is already available from the Chrome Web Store, with Mini Ninjas set to enter "an open beta in December without download."

"In September, we started supporting a set of core Pepper interfaces, suited for 2D graphics, audio, and compute-intensive applications," wrote Christian Stefansen, Native Client product manager, in a blog post  Friday. "Since that release, we've shipped additional APIs and capabilities, providing native code with more of the capabilities available from JavaScript. These include hardware-accelerated 3D graphics via OpenGL ES 2.0, a mouse lock API, a full-screen API, and much more."

"The community is actively involved in Native Client, porting some of the most popular application middleware. Ports include Unity and Moai game engines, programming language environments Mono and Lua, audio middleware such as fmod and Wwise, as well as the Bullet physics engine. These Native Client ports make the web more accessible to hundreds of thousands of application developers."

However, Google seems to be going against the grain with NaCl as many people within the browser industry, including Mozilla's director of web platforms Chris Blizzard, aren't convinced. Blizzard  told PCMag.com. "Google's Native Client approach is another way of running compiled, platform-specific binary code in a Web browser. It's not part of the standards-based Web as it's locked to specific combinations of hardware and operating systems. It's Mozilla's mission to ensure that the open technologies of the Web offer all that's needed to make Web applications powerful and interesting, and to see the need for native code use to diminish over time."

The Daily Grind: What game do you think never looks good in screenshots?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

I'm not sure why most EverQuest 2 screenshots feature a monster on one side and an adventurer on the other, but there you go.
Screenshots might not be the most important part of a game, but they're important before you decide to pop in and play. After all, part of what makes you decide that a game is worth trying out is the fact that it looks cool. Unfortunately, some games just hit us the wrong way. No matter how many different shots you get and how many different angles are tried, every time you see a screenshot of the game, it just looks bad.

Maybe it's a game you don't like. Maybe it's a game you do like, and you know it looks better in play. Maybe it's a game you've never tried one way or the other just because the look of the game turns you off. You might have no opinion on the game whatsoever -- regular Massively readers probably see several screenshots of games they don't even remember that don't look good to them. What game just seems to look bad in static shots every single time?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XI classes, round 2

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
It's time for the second batch of Final Fantasy XI classes to be examined under a set of criteria that have absolutely nothing to do with their actual power level. (Those change too often, and frankly I've never been a fan.) The first time around, we took a look at the three physical classes, who generally scored... all right, but not great. Each one had a clear area of expertise and some serious weaknesses in other areas -- which makes sense, being as they're starter classes.

The casters, on the other hand, are a different story. Sure, Warriors wind up later being an ur-type that gets distilled into several other roles, but most of the casters retain their uniqueness far later in the game. So let's take a look at your other three options when starting a new character in Final Fantasy XI, all of which have the same last name.

        The Tattered Notebook: Discovery arrives!

The Age of Discovery has arrived, along with the Freeport Reborn game update and the free-to-play transition. On top of that, Frostfell is also upon us, with even more new rewards, tradeskill books, and quests. That's a pretty hefty amount of change to EverQuest II, and it's brought back many former players (as well as new ones).

In this week's Tattered Notebook, let's take a look at the first week of launch. I rolled up a Beastlord along with the rest of Norrath, so I'd like to give some first impressions on the new class, take a look at the dungeon maker, and share some overall thoughts on the past week.

The Road to Mordor: My love-hate relationship with Legendary Items

Second to perhaps radiance, Legendary Items have become one of the most controversial, most debated, and most divisive game features in Lord of the Rings Online since their implementation in Mines of Moria. Since their inclusion, players have discussed -- loudly -- how the system could be fixed and improved, and Turbine's made a couple of attempts at refining the feature into something we can all enjoy.

And yet Legendary Items remain in that category that I like to call "love-hate," where there's almost as much to love about them as there is to loathe. I've waited a long time to write this article because the timing never felt right; either I was too new to the system to speak with any authority on it or changes were "right around the corner" or I was lazy. Take your pick.

Perhaps talking about this today is beating somewhat of a dead horse in the LotRO community, but I wanted to get my thoughts out why LIs haven't quite gotten to where they need to, how they've failed, where they've succeeded, and why I pray every evening for cosmetic weapons so I can get rid of that ugly glow effect.

We Break Down the Biggest VGA Trailers

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 07:48 PM PST

Following the biggest trailers revealed at this year's Spike Video Game Awards, Jeremy, Ryan, and Matt sat down to discuss the highlights -- most notably, Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, Platinum Games' Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Epic Games' Fortnite, and Irrational's BioShock Infinite.

The Last of Us in Development at Naughty Dog

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 07:19 PM PST

For a week now Sony has been teasing a new PlayStation 3 exclusive called The Last of Us. It's all been very mysterious and strange, with teaser trailers focused on things like ants. It was unclear what it would be like, but we know have a better idea of what's in store from this new game coming from Uncharted developer Naughty Dog.

The trailer above aired during tonight's Spike TV VGAs and was reminiscent of the Dead Island trailer that made a splash earlier this year. It showed an older man (accompanied by a young girl) fighting off zombies and scavenging for equipment. A lot was left unsaid in the trailer, though Naughty Dog has since shared a few details including the characters' names, Joel and Ellie. A plague has swept the nation and the two are forced to rely on each other and whatever supplies they can find as they make their way across the United States.

Gears of War Developer's New Game is Called Fortnite

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 06:47 PM PST

Epic Games promised it had a new IP to debut tonight at the Spike VGAs, something that was unlike the space marine-filled game it's focused most of its time on in recent years, Gears of War. Based on the first trailer shown for the new game, it wasn't lying.

Fortnite is about exploring, scavenging, and building, all in the name of survival. The trailer showed a cartoony, almost Team Fortress 2-like graphic style of characters pushing around a carriage filled with various objects made out of metal. That metal was then used to build a fort of sorts which was then attacked by monsters.

BioWare's New Game is Command & Conquer Generals 2

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 05:42 PM PST

The newest game to come out of BioWare is quite a bit different from the Mass Effects and Dragon Ages we're used to seeing it produce. Command & Conquer Generals 2 has been officially announced as the title that was first teased with the image above last month.

There was very little information shared; a brief trailer shown during the Spike VGAs revealed this to be what a new BioWare studio is at work on. The game runs on the Frostbite 2 engine (the same DICE-developed engine powering Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run) and is due out in 2013. And... well, that's all we know.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD Revives Parts of the First Two Games in 2012

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 03:58 PM PST

Retired professional skateboarder Tony Hawk teased earlier this week he would have a videogame-related announcement of some sort to make today. Ahead of what's sure to be the official reveal during the Spike TV Video Game Awards tonight, Hawk has revealed two of the more adored games in his skateboarding franchise are getting the high-def treatment. Sort of.

Speaking with Joystiq today, he explained that the new game is called Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD. It is comprised of levels from the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games (which were released in 1999 and 2000, respectively) and, as the name suggests, they'll be in HD. Besides sharing that School and Downhill are among the levels included, he didn't mention anything else specific like what game modes are available or if online multiplayer support is present.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising Being Developed by Platinum Games

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 02:28 PM PST

One of the rumors going around prior to E3 was that Metal Gear Solid: Rising was being developed not by Kojima Productions, but by Platinum Games. During the Spike TV Video Game Awards tonight, that will be revealed to be the case, although we've gotten a sneak preview of what's to come thanks to a trailer being leaked earlier today.

The trailer -- which has been published on YouTube numerous times and then been quickly pulled -- looks nothing like a Kojima product. Towards the end of the three minutes, the Kojima Productions logo is shown under the words "Produced by," followed by Platinum's logo beneath "Developed by." Platinum's previous work includes MadWorld, Bayonetta, and Vanquish, and it's currently at work on Anarchy Reigns.

            Riederan invades Atlantica Online

            Posted: 10 Dec 2011 11:51 AM PST

Atlantica Online is launching a new event, starting this Sunday: the Monster Invasion.

Every Sunday between December 11 and January 8, Riederan and his team of monsters will invade Atlantis. Players must defeat all the monsters before the town falls to their assault. The event is designed for all levels, as monsters will auto-level to match the players they face. Players can earn equipment boxes, experience boosts, and other buffs for their efforts.

Also added this weekend is the Sorceress Mwindo, a new mercenary who uses Primal Monsoon Magic, Beating Sun, and other magic abilities to defeat her foes. She is available to recruit through Kinshasha in Africa.

Atlantica Online is published by Nexon, which also publishes Dragon Nest and MapleStory.

Atlantica Online challenges soldiers to the Riederan's Monster Invasion event and welcomes the new mercenary Mwindo available for recruitment

Riederan and his minions are invading the once peaceful land in "Atlantica Online," Nexon's strategic turn-based massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, and engulfing the towns of Atlantis with fire. The December content update will feature the first wave of the Monster Invasion event and the new sorceress mercenary Mwindo. Brave souls can rise up to exterminate Riederan and his monsters every Sunday from Dec. 11 through Jan. 8.

"Riederan's Invasion" event will challenge players to rescue Atlantis by wiping out Riederan's troops. Players will be given 30 minutes to defeat 10,000 monsters in each town. The player must rush to defeat every monster before the town's defense diminishes. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to join the war, as the auto-leveling system will balance the monsters' levels to match the players'.

From equipment boxes to precious jewels, players can pocket an array of monster drops. In addition, successfully slaying a set of monsters will conjure up a bonus monster with even greater rewards. Victorious challengers who successfully defend their towns and defeat all of Riederan's monsters will be rewarded with a horde of experience and 15% Attack Power and Defense buff effect for three hours. Riederan's Loot will be reserved for the top ten champions that acquire the highest amount of Monster Points.

A moment of hope and calm enters the storm in Atlantis. The mesmerizing Sorceress mercenary Mwindo has arrived in Africa with a mission. Abandoned by her father for her supernatural powers, Mwindo has trained all her life to become the leader of her tribe one day. Mwindo wields a staff and the command of Primal Monsoon Magic, which inflicts the highest damage among all magic skills. In addition, her Beating Sun skill vigorously damages and silences an opponent. The majestic Mwindo is ready for recruitment through Kinshasha in Africa.

            Atlantica Online
Atlantica Online has become a much more dangerous place to visit as of late, ever since a horde of monsters led by the evil Riederan invaded the place. But you won't let a little thing such as XP-filled loot piñatas keep you from fighting back, right? We didn't think so.

Starting tomorrow and continuing through January 8th, Atlantica Online players will rise to meet the challenge of these invaders during a massive in-game event. When Riederan's Invasion is triggered, players have a scant half-hour to slaughter 10,000 monsters per town before the town's defenses fail. The event is programmed to scale so that mobs will match the players' levels.

Participate in the event and precious rewards and buffs will drop into your lap. Bet that's the best news your lap's heard all day! To help players out with the invasion, Atlantica Online has introduced a new hero, the sorceress Mwindo. Mwindo can use her primal monsoon magic and staff to bring the pain to the baddies.

WRUP: Requiem for a galaxy edition

It's going to be easy to miss it next week amidst launch news, but Star Wars Galaxies is shutting down. And so we say farewell to one of the greats of the genre, for whether or not the game was your cup of tea, it was unique. It was an ambitious project, aiming for all sorts of clever features and deserving no little credit for its many successes. We'll have more memorial pieces as the final shutdown approaches, but for now, let's just respect the sunset on a game that did a lot for the genre as a whole and provided so many players with so many memories.

Of course, first and foremost, this is an installment of WRUP, and that means we're talking about what we're playing over the weekend. We're also talking, rather appropriately, about games that we regret not having time to play. So see what the Massively staff is up to after the break, and let us know what you'll be doing in the comments.

                Star Wars Galaxies
One of Star Wars Galaxies' content quirks, borrowed heavily from Anarchy Online, is the random quest. If you tire of themepark questlines, you can trek over to a mission terminal and ask it to generate a random kill-10-rats quest for you. In SWG's prime, these quests were terribly annoying; no one really wants to spend all of his time leveling up by taking missions to destroy a gubbur lair over and over and over. Thank goodness for this new era of individual, scripted quests brought on by World of Warcraft, right?

Well, not necessarily. More than once, I (and some our our forum-goers) have been irked at hand-written quests in WoW-esque games. They're usually trite and transparent, and the quest-givers rarely have good reason to entrust me with their tasks. We're still getting kill-10-rats quests -- we just have to click through a bunch of lame dialogue first.

What do you think? Do you prefer pre-scripted, one-off, linear quests, or do you long for the simplicity and honesty of random quest generation?

A depiction of an Elvaan as something other than haughty and distant? It's the end of the world!
The end of the year quickly approaches, and if you're a veteran of Final Fantasy XI, you know that means it's time for the Starlight Celebration. The music changes in Jeuno, the snow falls, and players get to enjoy a bit of Christmas cheer in the game as well as out of it. And like most events, this one has a new wrinkle for its newest outing: it seems a handful of Goblins have decided to get involved in the celebration, taking some presents that weren't intended for them and leaving adventurers to recover the missing gifts.

Missed a previous year? That's all right -- you can still obtain one of the many cozy furnishings or festive costume pieces through a variety of event merchants and packages scattered throughout Vana'diel. The event will start on the live servers on December 16th and run through December 31st, plenty of time for everyone in Final Fantasy XI to get a solid dose of some holiday cheer.

                  Betawatch
This week in Betawatch, we learned that Dawntide will shuttering its beta to prep for yet another game-wide revamp, while both The Secret World and ArcheAge offered glimpses of fresh beta zones. APB: Reloaded graduates from the open beta list (again) as it heads into launch and lands on retail shelves. F2P Rosh Online likewise opened its doors officially (check out our first impressions!).

Finally, we bid farewell to Star Wars: The Old Republic, whose beta test attracted a staggering two million testers. The game begins its preorder headstart next week.

The full Betawatch roundup lies just beyond the break.

Lord of the Rings Online overhauling currencies into a single standard

Goats never worry about currencies. Goats have it figured out, man.
The great thing about token-based currencies, such as those found in Lord of the Rings Online, is that they allow players to acquire rewards based on steady progress rather than on the whims of a random drop. The awful thing is that you can wind up with huge vaults covered in several dozen different currency types, which is also found in Lord of the Rings Online. Fortunately, as the newest developer diary outlines, the currency is being consolidated down and shifted to a very straightforward system with just three reward types: Marks, Medallions, and Seals.

Marks are being used in a manner functionally similar to Skirmish Marks at the moment, while Medallions take the place of higher-end dungeon content and Seals are the best of the best. Players will have most of their currencies automatically converted based on the currency type, although Superior Fourth Marks will need to be manually exchanged for Medallions or Seals at the player's discretion. Players will ultimately have an easier time getting the rewards they need in a straightforward fashion with this update, and that's to the benefit of everyone.

Jagex, maker of the very popular browser-based MMO RuneScape, has branched out into the world of the MMORTS. I call this a good thing, especially since I am such a fan of the genre. There are literally scores and scores of the strategy-based city builders out there. Many of them not only are similar to each other but offer nothing new, not even a slight twist in design. I have a few favorites like Illyriad, Golden Age, and Aloriah, so I was eager to jump into this new one, given that it is made by one of my favorite design studios.

8realms seems to sport a unique design. Players are asked to build up their cities and advance through different ages, from ancient times all the way up to the modern day. A trailer on the front page of the official website shows a commander admiring his army of sword- and spearmen, until suddenly a modern-day jet fighter nukes them to smithereens. All I could think was, "Is this game balanced?"

If you would like to join in on the fun along with me, you can join in VIP access by going to the official site and using the code MASSIVELY15 when prompted. Then come back and click past the cut to hear all about my experience!

Red 5 Studios announced today that former Crytek lead, Ury Zhilinsky, has been hired by the studio as Senior Graphics Programmer. Ury brings over 10 years of industry experience to the Firefall developer and has worked on projects such as Crysis 2 and the ever-impressive CryENGINE3.

Of the addition, Red 5 CEO Mark Kern said, "Ury's skill and experience make him an asset that any team would be happy to have, but it's his development philosophy that makes him a fit for the 'tribe'." Things seem to be looking up for Firefall, but we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Orange is still usually not among police uniform colors. Sadly.
Are you excited about the release of the APB: Reloaded retail box? Ambivalent about the release but fond of screenshots? Either way, there's a whole lot of new screenshots from the game to coincide with said release, showing off two of the new maps for the game's new Fight Club battle mode and new SWAT gear for Enforcer players who like to take down crime in style. And heavy armor, which seems practical.

There's also a new revelation about the retail pack itself, as it seems that GamersFirst has sweetened the pot slightly. In addition to all of the bonuses listed in our post on the release yesterday, GamersFirst has confirmed that there are extra weapons in the package for those who purchase the pack within the first 30 days. So if you're curious about what you could do on the streets and have the $30 to check it out, now might be the time to do so.

Screenshot -- Star Wars: The Old Republic
Star Wars: The Old Republic is just a matter of days from beginning its early start program, but BioWare is continuing the news drip right up to the last minute. Today, the studio released a new video detailing the progression of the wicked Sith Inquisitor. For a lovely display of Force Lightning and other neat Inquisitor tricks, click on past the cut for the full video.

But first, we have some interesting launch-time statistics for you folks, courtesy of a massive thread over on the official SWTOR forums. In The Poll to end all Polls, over one million players have reported on the factions, races, and classes they plan to play at launch. Faction balance is surprisingly even, with a slight slant (53.82%) in favor of the Empire. Classes are almost evenly quartered (though the survey doesn't take advanced class into account). For the full statistics, click on over to Disdain Gaming.

And one more thing! Don't forget that BioWare will be hosting launch events in New York City, Austin, TX, London, and Paris. So if you're nearby, head on over and join up with your fellow fans to celebrate the launch of The Old Republic.

[Update: Continuing its deluge of Friday info, BioWare has also just released a forum post explaining why the Unify Color to Chestpiece system will not make it in for launch. But on a happier note, the SWTOR team just Tweeted that Guild HQ updates are coming Monday!]

                      Puzzle Pirates - green-clad avatars
Three Rings is making some interesting changes to its Puzzle Pirates MMO. A new post on the game's official forums outlines what's in store for the new year, and in a nutshell, players will be able to sail between many of the game's oceans (which, in regular MMO-speak, are actually the game's servers).

"We've been working on a way to consolidate the game's oceans for quite some time now, and after much deliberation, we determined that the fairest way to go about this is to combine the geographies of two oceans on one server," Three Rings explains.

The post hints at massive new explorable areas and also reassures players that their existing properties will be unaffected in spite of the mergers. There's a large FAQ in the thread as well, so head over to the Puzzle Pirates board for all the details.

Sony Online Entertainment is pulling out all the stops when it comes to the courtship of EverQuest II's new free-to-play constituency. In a post on the game's official boards, producer Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson has announced that both free and silver-level players are now eligible for the fantasy title's extensive veteran rewards program.

Georgeson's post is short and to the point as he briefly outlines SOE's approach. "There are a lot more [payment] options available to folks, and it just doesn't make sense that a free or silver player shouldn't be able to accumulate veteran rewards," he explains. You can view both the announcement post and a feedback thread on the official EQII forums.

Blizzard's Battle.net Balance boasts big business

                      Battle.net
Choo choo -- the Blizzard Micotransactrain is leaving the station! Whether or not you're aboard with Blizzard's increasing fixation on monetizing all aspects of its games, this train is certainly picking up steam. Its next station is called Battle.net Balance, and with it comes a whole new paradigm for the Blizzard empire. (Many apologies for using the word "paradigm.")

In effect, Battle.net Balance is a virtual wallet where players can purchase -- or "charge up" according to Blizzard's parlance -- points to then spend on items and services in World of Warcraft, Diablo III, and elsewhere. Diablo III players who earn Battle.net currency in-game can save those points through the service to spend later. The system can also be used to pay for WoW gametime.

However, the system comes with an important caveat: Once you've converted real-world money into Battle.net Balance, there's no getting it back as cash. So if you've got plans to make a living playing Diablo III, you might want to think again (although "certain regions" will be able to cash out via PayPal).

Battle.net Balance is heading our way in the near future, and if this affects your game, you might be interested to read the informative FAQ that goes into more detail.

Saddle up, rough riders: It's time to head to more fertile lands! Starting next week, select Warhammer Online players will be given the option to transfer between servers for free. The decision is Mythic's attempt to merge underpopulated servers, and the company hopes that this move will drive up the action in RvR for previously quiet locations.

Players on the Gorfang (North America) and Karak Azgal (Europe) will be able to move house to Badlands and Karak Norn, respectively, starting December 14th. Once this happens, Gorfang and Karak Azgal will be marked as "Legacy" servers, keeping new players from rolling on them, and then after three weeks, the two servers will be shut down completely. Any characters left on those servers will not be playable until they transfer to their new homes.

Mythic is also paving the way for guilds to move wholesale to new servers, with more information about this coming next week.

Thankfully there were a couple of cool DUST 514 tidbits to chew on, but before we get to those, I'd like to call your attention to some interesting Tribes: Ascend, APB: Reloaded, and CrimeCraft news that you may have missed.

The space between realities generally includes lizards.
Every game world has a basic setting premise. Your character in Guild Wars can come from all over Tyria, but he certainly doesn't come from Alderaan. Even though your captain in Star Trek Online is proficient in unarmed combat, she cannot bend the Matrix to her will. And no matter how similar the settings might seem, when WildStar finally comes out, you will not be able to claim that your character used to smuggle cargo on a Firefly-class vessel out in the black.

People do these things anyway. People gleefully import characters wholesale from other settings and expect it to be accepted that they come from another time and place, often bringing with them plenty of baggage. It's flagrant disregard for the rules of the setting and the game as it exists, and it's a hallmark of bad roleplaying...

And yet it doesn't have to be. This is an element of fiction that's always been very popular, and in some games (such as most superheroic ones), the idea of slipping from one world to another doesn't seem that far-fetched. So let's talk about why it tends to be done and how you can actually do this without being obnoxious.
