PS3's 4.0 Update Not as Significant as the Number Suggests

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 05:47 PM PST

PlayStation 3

The latest (mandatory) system update for the PlayStation 3 is now available. The v4.00 update sounds like the sort of thing that should welcome in some major new features; instead, future Vita owners and PlayStation Plus subscribers are the main groups who will benefit much from this particular update.

With the Vita launching in just a few weeks in Japan -- it'll be out there on December 17 -- this update enables the PS3 to manage content for the device. Digital games, music, photos, videos, and save games can all be transferred from the Vita to a PS3 for the purpose of backing them up. Vita firmware will also be upgradable through the PlayStation 3 with this update.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies Announced; Releases Tomorrow

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 01:07 PM PST

In a not-that-surprising-when-you-think-about-it move, Activision has just announced the existence of Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies for iOS, and its launch date: tomorrow (Activision wouldn't confirm pricing, but it's already available on New Zealand's iTunes Store for $9.99 NZD, or $6.99 USD). Like its predecessor Call of Duty: World at War Zombies, this is a pretty straightforward port from Ideaworks Game Studio of the various maps, modes, and assets from its console brethren.

New additions to this version include: Voice Chat (it can use either the iPhone's headphones or a Bluetooth headset), four-player co-op via local Wi-fi or online network matchmaking, point multipliers (and online ranking, which will provide a motivation to use said multipliers) and a revamped interface. Now there are three control schemes: an accelerometer-based one where you use one thumb to move, one to shoot, and move the unit around to look-and-aim; a traditional dual-thumb scheme where one moves while the other looks-and-aims; and the "control touch" where you use one thumb to move, but you use the right side of your device for looking and shooting (I'm told, "treat the right side of the screen like a mouse"). A welcome gameplay tweak is the fact that you can just tap once on a barricade to build it; as long as you're still in front of it, you can defend yourself without having to turn and tap on it rapidly. It has been optimized down to the third generation of iOS devices -- essentially, any hardware that can run iOS 4 and upward can play Black Ops Zombies.

Final Fantasy Type-0 Headed to the West - Report

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 11:53 AM PST

EverQuest II: Still Alive And Getting a New Expansion Next Week

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 11:30 AM PST

EverQuest II kind of reminds me of a town I lived in for a few months and then never expected to come back to. Returning after this much time it's disorienting to see both how much and how little has changed. Most notably, EQII recently joined the ever-growing club of semi-free MMOs, and now relies on sales of expansion content and non-essential perks to make rent. It's even got one of those nifty streaming clients that allow you to start playing before the full download is finished, so if you've ever harbored even the slightest hint of curiosity about the game, there's really no excuse not to at least pop your head in there for a few minutes.

Next week, December 6 specifically, EQII will be getting its 11th expansion: Age of Discovery. Among other things, this one adds a Beastlord class from the first EverQuest that players have been begging for pretty much since EQ2's release. As one might expect from a "Beast Master" type class, they can tame cats, wolves, birds, and other critters found all over the world. One animal (or "warder") at a time joins its master in combat, where in addition to making standard attacks they can notice enemy weaknesses and open up opportunities for more debilitating strikes. It's a class that offers more complexity than most along with providing an imaginary friend for solo players to talk to. Speaking of, NPC mercenaries are being added in this update. For a regular salary, hirelings can fill a tank, healer, support, melee DPS, or caster DPS role just like a regular member of a party. They take up a group spot and even insist on a share of the loot. On the plus side, they're less annoying to play with than the average pick up group, and can be given silly names if you don't like the one they have by default.

Maybe That Patch Wasn't the Answer to Skyrim Players' Woes

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 10:22 AM PST

This week's patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was supposed to fix existing bugs, not introduce new ones. Yet that appears to be what's happened for a number of gamers who have upgraded to version 1.2, which was first released for PlayStation 3 on Monday. The patch was set to hit Xbox 360 last night and Steam this afternoon.

Among the issues for some users, as the video above demonstrates, is the fact that dragons now fly backwards, which looks even more ridiculous than it sounds.
