BioShock Vita Still Very Early, Development Could be Handled Externally

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 03:28 PM PDT

BioShock Infinite

Irrational Games' Ken Levine had two surprises to share when he took to the stage during Sony's E3 press conference in June. BioShock Infinite will support PlayStation Move and a new BioShock game is being developed for Vita. Although several months have passed since then, development on the Vita game hasn't progressed far, and it's not a guarantee that Irrational will even develop the entire game internally.

Speaking with Joystiq, Levine described the game as being "in the paper design stage." Confirming what he said in June, the idea is still to create a brand-new game for Vita as opposed to porting the original BioShock or Infinite to the handheld, although "things can change."

Jersey Shore's Snooki Has Games, Apps Coming to Facebook and iOS

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 02:28 PM PDT

Snooki

Nicole Polizzi, better known as Snooki on Jersey Shore, has agreed to a deal with a developer to release a number of apps and games starting next month.

The deal is with Apps Genius Corp, a company whose lone game on iOS is Slap a Friend, an app where you can plaster someone's face onto a character and proceed to beat them around with a bat, drop bowling balls on them, and so on. It's an appropriate partnership as I can imagine Snooki's face has been used in this game a number of times.

The other iOS release from Apps Genius is Bed Bug Alert, an app that allows you to keep track and report bed bug infestations. (No, it's not a game.) Its website lists some of its Facebook projects, which include Bruisers (a "turn based strategy war game" with pirates and ninjas), Drama Llama ("Now you can track who causes the most drama among your friends and family"), and My Mad Millions (a game where you must spend $300 million and have nothing left over at the end).

New XIII Game Coming in November

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 01:55 PM PDT

XIII

Eight years after it was first adapted into a videogame, another game is being developed based on comic book series XIII.

This was revealed by a teaser released by French publisher Anuman Interactive. It mentions that players will be able to go back to the origins of the conspiracy in November on several platforms: PC, Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

XIII was first turned into a game in 2003. A cel-shaded first-person shooter, XIII (pictured above) starred David Duchovny in the titular role of XIII, an amnesiac who works to uncover the plot of a conspiracy. It was quite the apt role for someone who played Fox Mulder for the better of a decade on The X-Files. The XIII comics themselves were based upon The Bourne Identity novel released in 1980.

Facebook Alters How App Users are Measured, Revealing Lower Figures for Games

CityVille

Zynga's line of games have long been among the most popular apps on Facebook. While its games do draw in millions of users of a daily basis, changes to the way Facebook counts active users have given us a better picture of how many people are really using apps and playing games on Facebook.

The change was first announced last month during Facebook's f8 event. It was then implemented this past Friday and, as expected, has caused a significant, one-time drop off in the popularity of Facebook apps.

First Weekend for iPhone 4S Sees 4 Million Units Sold

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 11:09 AM PDT

iPhone 4S Infinity Blade 2

The initial reaction was tepid at best, yet iPhone 4S pre-orders started out hot. Apple announced last week that more than one million phones were pre-ordered in the first 24 hours of availability on October 7, far exceeding the 600,000 that the iPhone 4 did when it launched on AT&T in June 2010. With Verizon on board at this phone's launch and Sprint added as a new carrier in the United States, Apple's latest device had a big opening weekend.

Four million iPhone 4S units were sold in its first three days. According to Apple's Philip Schiller, that's "the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days."

Not to take anything away from Apple, but keep in mind the circumstances are much different. This phone launched on three carriers as opposed to the iPhone 4 initially being available only on AT&T. Even with that model coming to Verizon earlier this year, there may have been many who ignored it and opted to wait for the next model believing it would be revealed and then released in June as the past several models had been.

Halo Anniversary Kinect Support Revealed

Halo Anniversary Hang 'Em High

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary looks nicer for sure but is still largely the same game we first played ten years ago. Kinect support is a non-visual feature that has the potential to really differentiate the remastered game from the original Xbox FPS. A big part of what Kinect provides is voice control support which may not immediately sound compelling, but one component of it will be of particular interest to fans of Halo lore.

Franchise development director Frank O'Connor told 1UP last month that an example of the Kinect voice support is allowing players to switch between the original and updated graphics by saying, "Classic" or "Remastered." He said more actions would be revealed in October, and true to his word they now have been, including some that replace simple button presses and others that provide an all-new experience.

Review: Professor Layton and the Last Specter is an Awful Lot of Game

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 10:00 AM PDT

The Professor Layton series is meant to evoke the spirit of a sort of fictional post-Edwardian England, so it's wholly fitting that the games themselves display a spiritual similarity to the pulp novels of that era. They're hardly the tawdry, poorly written tripe common to the penny dreadfuls of those days, but like classic cheap pulp entertainment, they're formulaic and comfortable. Level-5 set down a pattern for the series with the very first game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and the puzzle-solving protagonist's latest adventure never strays an inch from that prescribed format.

You don't play a Professor Layton game because you're looking for a shocking new form of interactive narrative, though. You play because you like the characters -- the erudite gentleman who serves as the hero, his eager young assistant Luke, and the frequently odd folk who surround the latest mystery -- and because you enjoy solving riddles, both in the sense of overt brain-teasers and the inevitable nesting puzzles that comprise each game's plot. A Professor Layton game is a whimsical, intriguing detective novel crammed with both cartoons and overt calls for mental gymnastics.

Devil May Cry HD Collection Confirmed for 2012

Devil May Cry 3 HD

Following previous rumors that a bundle of the first three Devil May Cry games would be released this year to celebrate the series' 10-year anniversary, Capcom has announced it plans to bring out a remastered collection of all three next year.

ESRB listings for the trio were updated not long ago with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 being added as platforms, so we knew they would be coming in one form or another. Today's press release notes that they will be upgraded to feature HD graphics, bonus content of some kind, and Achievements/Trophies.
