Gazillion's president says MMOs are in a rut

The Incredible Hulk is very pissed off
"I think MMOs in general are in a rut. It's still mainly WoW clones. A lot of people have done these games, but it's been that same kind of gameplay, and that doesn't mean that's what it has to be," says Gazillion's David Brevik.

Who's David Brevik?

Well he's the president and COO of the company bringing you the free-to-play Marvel Universe MMO (yeah, the one where you can't make your own character). More importantly -- in terms of gamer cred -- he also co-founded Blizzard North.

Brevik was recently interviewed about WoW clones, free-to-play business models, and everything in between, and you can read the full text at GamesIndustry.biz. You'll need to register for an account to access the content, but registration is free.

The Game Archaeologist answers Asheron's Call 2: The fansite managers

Asheron's Call - The Game Archaeologist
Back when I covered Asheron's Call for The Game Archaeologist, I got an impassioned email from a former fansite operator who made me promise that I'd drop her a line when the time came to talk about Asheron's Call 2, as she was not only a huge fan of the title but still in contact with many former players who carry a torch for Turbine's long-departed MMO. One thing led to another, and I ended up talking to both her and a fellow AC2 fansite manager about the ups and downs of covering the second coming of Dereth...

The Game Archaeologist: Please introduce yourself, your current job position, and how you got involved with Asheron's Call 2 back in the day?

Kiersten Samwell: I'm Kiersten Samwell, Community Relations and Social Media Manager for KingsIsle Entertainment, the creator of Wizard101. I used to be the Site Manager for Warcry's Crossroads of Dereth/Asheron's Call site as Ellen Ripley, so it was natural to work with the site manager of their Asheron's Call 2 fansite as well. His name is Roberto, and he was just an incredible site manager. Of course, being an avid AC1 player, I enjoyed AC2 for both its similarities to and its differences from AC1.

Robert Hackett: Hi, I'm Robert Hackett, the Managing MMO Editor of GamersInfo.net. I actually got invited to one of the betas along with a friend of mine. The lag was so bad (the day I logged in may have been a stress test; I can't remember) that I told my friend that there was no way my rig could handle that. Fast forward to the month after release and Ophelea from the old AC Crossroads site begged me to come over to AC2 and be an editor for the database she was trying to build. Logged in and the game was a million percent better. I stayed to work on the database and eventually fell in love with it beyond "work!"

Win a Blizzcon ticket from Gamebreaker.TV

    Blizzcon
Seeing as how this year's Blizzcon tickets were sold out in the same amount of time that it takes you to read this sentence, the only way for you to experience the convention now is either virtually or by snagging a ticket from a generous donor. Fortunately, Gamebreaker.TV has a spare ticket on hand that it's prepared to bestow on a lucky fan -- and anyone can take a crack at winning it.

To try your hand at winning the golden ticket, you simply have to buy as many Wonka bars as you can possibly... no, wait, that's not right. Actually, all you have to do is head over to Gamebreaker.TV's Facebook page and click "like" to be entered into the drawing.

Blizzcon tickets were priced at $175 apiece and were sold out as of this past May. The convention might not have the big reveal of Blizzard's next big MMO, but it's got plenty of Foo Fighters to compensate.

Blizzard introduces RMT loophole in World of Warcraft

    Posted: 11 Oct 2011 07:00 AM PDT

    Pet
Normally, the introduction of yet another pet in Blizzard's online pet store wouldn't raise any eyebrows. This time, however, the company is making one small change with a vanity pet that could have huge consequences in the game itself.

World of Warcraft's newly announced Guardian Cub is on its way to the pet store and will retail for $10. The difference between this and other pets available in the store is that the Cub will not bind to the player who purchased it, but will remain bind-on-equip -- and tradable -- until it is used. Effectively, this turns the Cub into a $10 currency item that can be traded for in-game gold, a fact that Blizzard openly acknowledges in the pet's FAQ:
While our goal is to offer players alternative ways to add a Pet Store pet to their collection, we're OK with it if some players choose to use the Guardian Cub as a safe and secure way to try to acquire a little extra in-game gold without turning to third-party gold-selling services. However, please keep in mind that there's never any guarantee that someone will purchase what you put up for sale in the auction house, or how much they'll pay for it. Also, it's important to note that we take a firm stance against buying gold from outside sources because in most cases, the gold these companies offer has been stolen from compromised accounts. While some players might be able to acquire some extra gold by putting the Guardian Cub in the auction house, that's preferable to players contributing to the gold-selling "black market" and account theft.
Player reaction has been strong and varied, with many seeing this as a full endorsement of RMT in WoW.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Guild Wars has Wintersday, Lord of the Rings Online has the Spring Festival ... heck, many MMOs have at least one developer-created party per year, often more.

En Masse releases October TERA producer's letter

      Screenshot -- TERA KICK!
It's been a while since we last heard from En Masse Entertainment, but the wait is now over. Chris Hager is back on the scene with the newest TERA producer's letter, and there are a few details that may make fans a bit more excited about the upcoming title.

The studio recently met with a few members of the Bluehole Studio overseas team. The result of this meeting? "A firm alpha/beta/launch schedule" for the upcoming action MMORPG. What is that schedule? Well, we don't know yet. Sorry! The next phase of alpha testing will be taking place soon, though it's important to note that the studio is selecting testers internally. With any luck, this means that beta is just on the horizon. Keep in touch for further updates, which Mr. Hager assures us are coming soon.

Lost Pages of Taborea: Patch 4.0.3 changes

Last week, Runes of Magic's latest patch brought Knight skill balancing, saw the return of the Juice Festival, and tried to remove some macro functions. All in all, it wasn't a huge patch, but it was enough to light up the RoM forum with a lot of chatter.

As it turns out, many vocal players were saddened to see the removal of macro functions that gave them an incredible amount of flexibility. The abilities given to players to make scripts, macros and addons with amazing freedom have been among RoM's strong points, but they also allowed so much freedom that they skirted the boundary between "helpful addon" and "botting."

The proposed macro change may be one of the fastest retractions Frogster has ever had to make, but there's also the balancing that Knights received and the Juice Festival to talk about in this week's Lost Pages of Taborea. Grab your favorite juice and meet me after the break.

This week's Flameseeker Chronicles is a bit of a departure. Rather than compiling a guide or a wrap-up of the latest news or content, we're going to sit back, relax, and have a little bit of fun. The timing couldn't be better: We're in a post-convention lull for Guild Wars 2, Winds of Change part two has arrived and been played through, and Halloween events aren't here quite yet.

It's a chance to take a bit of a breather, so this week I'm focusing on some community events and a little extra. Jump past the cut and let's get started!

Mabinogi fans aren't having the best of weeks, as their MMO of choice has been down for the count since October 4th. ThisIsGame.com reported that Nexon took the free-to-play fantasy title completely offline in order to deal with unauthorized real-money trading and implement new security measures.

Players were warned of the downtime approximately one hour before it occurred, and though there's no time table for a restart, Nexon has said that it will compensate customers accordingly.

"We have found lots of RMT [resulting] from workers and auto players during the last holiday. So we are working on [an] investigation [...] and proceeding [with] broadscale system maintenance to root it out," the company said.

Admit it: Whether it is born of a desire to vindicate yourself using the opinions of another or because you just sharpened your claws and are eager to rip said opinions to shreds, sometimes you just love to read a juicy rant. Love them or leave them, we all have opinions and tend toward sharing them, from superstitions to sports to Aion. What make rants so delectably special are the passion and power behind them.

Unfortunately, this is not a rant.

In fact, this week's Wings Over Atreia is going to be an anti-rant. No, that does not mean I will rant against rants because I am opposed to them (that would still be a rant, not to mention they can be cathartic at times); rather, this will be the opposite of a rant. Yes folks, I am going to do something radical! Trolls, cover your eyes: I am going to give a compliment. And not just any compliment -- I am going to give praise to NCsoft's customer service! *gasp*

What confluence of events in Aion brought me to this? Take a peek past the cut to see for yourself.

More Age of Wulin beta news is on tap courtesy of MMO Culture, and more video footage is available as well. The free-to-play fantasy sandbox just opened its initial closed beta phase to the Chinese market, and as a result we're getting a first look at some of the game's unique features and skills.

While most MMOs focus completely on combat, Age of Wulin features some very intriguing non-combat aspects, many of which are found in the life skills tree. In addition to traditional gathering and crafting disciplines, there are also sewing, musician, artist, chess, fortune teller, and beggar skills, just to name a few.

Combat isn't forgotten, course, and you can view a basic combat tutorial video and some life skill clips after the break.

EVE capital ship balancing coming this winter

                EVE Online - Gallente Titan
The lovefest between CCP and its disgruntled playerbase continues, this time in the form of a new blog entry heralding the impending balance of capital ships.

The proliferation of supercapital ships has been roundly criticized in various EVE Online discourses over the years, and CCP feels the time is right to begin addressing the stagnant fleet fights that often result when hundreds of hard-to-kill megaships are clogging the space lanes.

So what's the nerf solution? According to CCP Tallest, the devs plan to make supercapitals "a little bit weaker, but not gut them completely. We're doing a simple 20% reduction in shield, armor, and hull hitpoints on both supercarriers and titans." Tallest goes on to outline a few more details including planned changes for dreadnoughts, sub-capitals, and the oft-employed logoff exploit. "We are changing the logoff mechanics in such a way that as long as your enemies are actively engaged in fighting you, logging off is not going to save your ship."

DUST 514 to be the 'biggest multiplayer FPS on the market'

                Dust 514 - concept art
"In terms of scale, depth and volume of content, DUST 514 will easily be the biggest multiplayer FPS on the market," says CCP executive producer Brandon Laurino.

That's a fairly bold claim given the sheer number of multiplayer shooters already in existence, not to mention the staggering sales figures many of them achieve. Laurino's talking world maps and content, though, and when it comes to the ginormous sci-fi universe of New Eden, size does matter. "You're looking at a conflict taking place across thousands of planets, so we're not just talking a dozen maps -- we're talking an entire universe of planets and areas of engagement within them," Laurino told Eurogamer.

Such scale doesn't come cheaply, though, and the only thing bigger than Dust 514's galaxy map is its in-game store. Laurino says that CCP has thousands of microtransaction items ready to be purchased over the PlayStation network, and Sony's willingness to work with the CCP devs is noted as the primary reason for the upcoming shooter's console exclusivity. Laurino also mentions that Dust's beta will be something of an exclusive rollout called Private Trials, but no date-related info is available as of yet.

Dark Age of Camelot turns 10 this week, and if that doesn't make you feel old, well, you're probably not very old (and while we're at it, kindly remove yourself from our lawn). At any rate, Scott Jennings waxes nostalgic about the fantasy RvR title on his personal blog by posting a remembrance from original Mythic producer Matt Firor.

The piece is heavy on the meta details, and a read-through will give you an idea of how drastically the MMO industry has changed over the past decade. Firor talks about Mythic's scramble to meet the crushing demand for more servers and the resulting mad dash for the nearest computer retailer to purchase a dozen desktops that were quickly loaded with Linux and whipped into an ad-hoc server cluster.

There are more interesting details, of course, and you can read them all at Broken Toys.

The Darkness 2 Already Looks Like Digital Extremes' Best Game

                Posted: 10 Oct 2011 04:45 PM PDT

Another random fact to file in the "things I never knew until I attend a video game demo": According to The Darkness 2, an especially scummy brothel will set itself up right in the middle of an abandoned mannequin factory. Because nothing gets you in the mood to pay for sexual congress than a giant bin of discarded mannequin legs!

Bizarre location aside, The Darkness 2 can be off-putting for several reasons. It uses that "graphic noir" art style, which ultimately means that there are really pronounced outlines on everyone, and the colors on the textures of character skins tend to have a bolder (but odder) look to them. Besides utilizing a cel-shaded-but-not-quite art style, the other off-putting aspect is how The Darkness 2 isn't from Starbreeze, but from Digital Extremes.

Leisure Suit Larry Makes a Comeback in HD

                Posted: 10 Oct 2011 03:02 PM PDT

Leisure Suit Larry is largely regarded as a pretty poor franchise by those who have only played the more recent entries in the franchise. Years back, it had its unfunny moments but was an extremely popular point-and-click adventure series. Nowadays it might be difficult to track down its better iterations, so Replay Games is hoping to revive them all for modern platforms.

Back in June, Replay announced it was working with Larry creator Al Lowe to bring the original Leisure Suit Larry to tablets, netbooks, and mobile devices. According to EGM, it now has plans to bring remastered, HD versions to an even wider variety of platforms: Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, PC, Mac, iOS, Android, OnLive, and more.

The first game in the series, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, was originally released in 1987 and then got a remake in 1991. This took the original 16-color EGA graphics (featured in the video above, which shows off the game's first ten minutes) and upgraded them to 256 colors.

                Why Quake Changed Games Forever

By: Ryan Winterhalter October 10, 2011

Quake may be the most influential game of all time. Not the best game, not the most innovative, but the most influential. Without it, the industry would be a very different place today. It gave rise to many of aspects of modern gaming that we take for granted. Its developers, modders, and even the very code of the game itself are ubiquitous in the industry today. Id software's 1996 FPS gave rise to 3D gaming, client/server online play, the most prolific mod scene in history, multiplayer clans, server browsers, eSports, mouse-look as the PC control standard, Valve and dozens of other companies, and even 1UP's sister website, GameSpy. Without Quake, it's unlikely another game that featured the same suite of innovations would have come along. We would have had to wait for each of those things one at a time.

Quake came together almost by accident. There was no design document for the first half of its development, and the game that shipped was very different from what the creators first held in their minds in the beginning (if they had anything in mind). In 1994 id Software released Doom II. The company was riding high and seemed unstoppable. They announced that their next game would be Quake, a project they had started and abandoned years earlier, according to John Romero, id co-founder and the game's Tools Programmer and level designer, "When we finished our first Commander Keen series on December 14th, 1990, we immediately started working on Quake in January. It was a top-down RPG because it was like D&D." The entire game was based on a tabletop campaign played by id founders. "The character of Quake was in this group called the Silver Shadow Band. It was a very small elite group of super badass characters. [He was this] Thor-like guy, and he had this amazing hammer, and this thing called the Hellgate Cube -- which was a sentient inter-dimensional cube that would rotate around him and go do its own thing depending on what was going on." He continues "We worked on it for two weeks and it was like, 'you know what, there's no way that this thing is looking as awesome as Quake really is, so let's just stop making Quake right now. So we decided to just sort of shelve it and wait until we had really great technology to make this a reality."

New Wii Model Comes in Blue for Mario & Sonic Bundle

blue Wii Mario & Sonic Europe bundle

Not only does Europe get the new Wii model, it's getting it in a new blue color starting next month.

In addition to the standalone game, Mario & Sonic at London 2012 Olympic Games for Wii will be bundled with the new Wii announced during Gamescom. The system will come in the blue color seen on the box above, as will the accompanying Wii Remote Plus.

A new model of Wii might sound exciting, but really it's just stripping out a feature: the biggest change with this new version is its lack of GameCube support. The four controller inputs have been removed, resulting in the system being smaller. It's only been confirmed for Europe; Nintendo of America told 1UP in August it had no plans to release the new console -- or Europe's Family Edition bundle (consisting of the new system, Wii Sports, and Wii Party) -- in North America.

Modders Make Waluigi a Playable Super Smash Bros. Character

                Posted: 10 Oct 2011 12:07 PM PDT

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has an impressively deep roster of characters, yet there are still quite a few first-party characters who are missing. More than three years after its release on Wii, modders are still hard at work on bringing new content to the game, with one recent noteworthy addition being a playable version of Waluigi.

Although he hasn't been around for as long as his bad-Mario counterpart Wario, Waluigi has been in a number of games since his Mario Tennis debut in 2000. He's playable in Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart Wii (where he's my go-to character), but he's not playable in Brawl -- though he does make an appearance. A group of modders took it upon themselves to change that, and they seem to have done an excellent job.

The video above demonstrates a variety of his moves, shows how Kirby can copy him to don the Waluigi hat, and features a fight against Pikachu. As you might guess based upon his placement on the character selection screen or his name on the HUD at one point, he replaces Pit. An alternate version can instead replace King Dedede.

Mass Effect 3 Online Multiplayer Confirmed

                Mass Effect 3

Update 2: BioWare's Casey Hudson has chimed in on Twitter, adding that the multiplayer will be cooperative, not competitive. He wrote, "Yes, co-op MP missions for #ME3: they're real, and they're spectacular. Rest assured it's nothing of what you've feared. More soon..."

Update: If you're more interested in the take of a local publication, Official Xbox Magazine is also promoting an upcoming issue that features details about Mass Effect 3's online multiplayer. So after numerous indications that it's coming, it seems safe to classify this particular aspect of the game as "confirmed."

Original Story: Even before Mass Effect 3 was announced last December, there were rumors that it would feature multiplayer, or that a separate Mass Effect game was being developed which included multiplayer support. Talk of multiplayer has only continued over the past year, though BioWare has refused to confirm its presence.

1 Million iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Racked Up On Day One

                iPhone 4S

As is often the case, the somewhat negative reaction around the Internet (this time to the iPhone 4S announcement last week) didn't have much of a correlation to sales of the device itself. Ahead of its release this Friday, October 14, pre-orders began through Apple, the individual carriers, and retail stores like Best Buy this past Friday, October 7, and they managed to set a new record.

In the first 24 hours alone, over one million phones were pre-ordered. This breaks the previous record of 600,000 held by the iPhone 4, which launched in June 2010.

Aesthetically, the 4S is identical to the iPhone 4. It's on the inside where the changes lie; the 4S sports the dual-core A5 processor seen in the iPad 2, an improved camera capable of 1080p video recording, a personal assistant called Siri, longer battery life, a dual antenna setup, and GSM and CDMA support in the same phone.

Netflix Drops Qwikster DVD Service, Game Rentals "to be Determined"

                Netflix

Netflix angered many customers over the summer when it raised the price of a popular plan that provides access to online streaming and DVDs. This prompted a great deal of members to unsubscribe from Netflix altogether, and this was only made worse when the company announced last month that it was splitting off its DVD-by-mail business to a separate website with a different name: Qwikster. This would leave Netflix to be streaming-only. The company has now done a 180; with such a negative outcry over all this, it announced today it will not be splitting up the two businesses -- it will, however, be maintaining the price increase.

An email was sent out to members today informing them of the decision to not make the change. A brief blog post from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has also been published which makes the news official. It reiterates there will be no further price hikes and that killing the poorly-named Qwikster "means no change: one website, one account, one password... in other words, no Qwikster."

"Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that," said Hastings in a statement sent to the New York Times. "There is a difference between moving quickly -- which Netflix has done very well for years -- and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case."
