World of the Living Dead has always prided itself on realism (as real as a zombie MMO can be), and now they've decided to take this one step further by adding new management controls for feeding and "watering" your survivors.

Postcards From CoD XP: Scrapyard Paintball Looks More Gears of War

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 07:33 PM PDT

The real life recreation of Modern Warfare 2's Scrapyard in the form of a paintball course was the number one attraction at CoD XP. The line was hours long, but it seems that deathmatching skills don't translate over to paintball. Instead the matches resembled Gears of War rather than CoD, with players rushing between cover points -- which is understandable given GoW was originally inspired by a paintball match.

Postcards from CoD XP: What Does Sumo Have to Do With Modern Warfare?

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 11:47 AM PDT

I'm not sure what this brand of 'sumo' wrestling has to do with Modern Warfare, guns, and shooting, but that hasn't stopped a line from forming at the 'Juggernaut Sumo' booth here at BroCon. Those suits the pair is wearing are supposed to look like the Juggernaut Bomb Suit from MW3, but the resemblance is passing at best.

Assault Fire - Alpha phase preview

Posted: 04 Sep 2011 06:03 AM PDT

It has been a few weeks since I played any China games, and I decided to revisit a game which  is currently still in the Alpha phase. This is one of the rare China online games I managed to get, mind you. My luck with Tencent Games is quite awesome these days, with another 2 Alpha keys snagged for other games. Ok, back to topic. Originally known as TGame (link), Assault Fire is developed using the Unreal 3 Engine and is a online shooter (MMOFPS) with some PvE content as well as various PvP modes.

I actually played the game a few months back, but I realized I did not do any post on it. So, the most fun mode for me in Assault Fire is no doubt the one killing cyborgs AI while trapped inside a room with 3 other players. There are different difficulty modes as well, with monsters increasing in numbers and new ones emerging upon reaching higher levels. I blame my latency for being able to clear the mode only once before. And I really suck at playing against human players. No, really, 200+ ping is not something to joke about :( *finding excuses*

Other modes now includes the usual Team Death Match, Capture the Flag, Free Kill and Sniper War. However, with the official Closed Beta phase coming up, more interesting modes will be added. These includes the Mecha Wars, where one side of the players will be able to ride Mechas, while the other side is given stronger weapons to counter. Mechas have their own abilities to fly as well.

Another new mode will be the Tank Wars, where players can choose to hop in various different tank and helicopter models and control them in first person mode. Players who are uncomfortable are also able to switch to a third person mode, becoming sort of like World of Tanks in view. Finally, the Cyborg War mode will change one side of the players into Cyborgs.

The Closed Beta date is still not announced as of now, so stay tuned for more information. I am now off testing Tencent Games' other MMOFPS, War of Zombie which is in Alpha phase as well. Look out for some game footage soon!

Era Zero - Technology against magic

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 08:53 AM PDT

This is a story about perseverance and one company which was seemingly on it way down barely a 2 years ago. China MMO developer and publisher, The9, was at risk of going down after losing the rights for World of Warcraft China with no other major games to support the revenue WoW brought it. In comes a group of Koreans led by current Vice President, Tony Park, who revitalized the company with various shrewd acquisitions.

Era Zero is one of the upcoming online games of the new era for The9. The game's storyline depicts humans leaving Earth to avoid some catastrophe, only to return and find out Earth is being swarmed with robotic thrash. Hence, the battle begins between magic and technology. There are 4 basic classes in the game, each with 2 further unrevealed advancements. First being Warrior, Magician, Priest and Gunner.

One of the game's main features is the ability to command any unoccupied mechanical machines on the open field maps simply by clicking on it. This will greatly enhance a player's attack abilities. While that is the technological part, there is a magic part as well. Players will be able to enter Spirit mode by fusing with their accompanying spirit partners. This is sort of like a berserk mode, with stats all drastically increased and taking a new look as well temporarily.

One of the many games currently in development for The9, with Tony Park claiming 2012 will see the company shine like no other, Era Zero will be starting its Closed Beta on 15th September, with the long forgotten MUX (link) still in active development as well.
