Ixion Saga - Capcom shows ambition

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 06:20 AM PDT

While many of us know Capcom as one of the top console game developers in Japan and beyond, not could foresee the company taking the online gaming industry seriously a few years back. After the success of Monster Hunter Frontier (in Japan to say the least), Capcom is back with its latest MMORPG, Ixion Saga.

Let me briefly describe the game's plot. Basically, the land is divided into 2 warring nations. The Ixion race, higher beings who are watching over the land, aimed to end the conflict once and for all by creating the neutral faction of Hyperion, which the players will assume. Hyperions are portrayed as mercenaries in the game. Of course, there are more elements to the lore such as mystical powers, auras etc, but I am going to skip that part.

There are currently 4 races found in the game, mainly Human, Demi Human, Hyperion and of course, Ixion. Can you make a guess which race does each artwork belongs to?

Well, the superior Ixion race is displayed first, followed by 2 artwork for Demi Human (different species) followed by Human. Hyperion is not shown above. The 3 main weapons currently revealed are sword and shield, rifle and staff. The classes for them are namely Striker, Blaster and Caster. As you can see below, the classes will further advance into new ones in the future.

Here are some character models for all 3 different weapons. In typical Japanese RPG style, the character models are all really cool in design!

So what are some of the basic features Ixion Saga has to offer? There will be a maximum of 8 Vs 8 PvP battles, storyline and quests progress differently as the character grows, guild housing etc. Well, for an Alpha phase announcement, these features are just about enough.

Ixion Saga is currently recruiting players for the Alpha phase beginning at the end of this month and is aiming for the official service to begin in Summer 2012. What is your thought on the game so far through this small preview?

Sura Online - New trailers and information

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 04:49 AM PDT

Well, Trailer 2 (HD) isn't really that new being a few months old, but I only saw it earlier today. Sura Online is the maiden title from Korean developer NSE Entertainment (previously known as Tempest9) and the game design is heavily influenced by the Eastern fantasy. So far, 2 races and 6 classes (3 each) has been confirmed.

It is hard for me to translate either of the races, but in Trailer 2 (HD) the Xian Ren (Deity) race is shown while the Yao Pan is presented in Trailer 3. The game is expected to go into Closed Beta later this year. How does it look to you so far?

PlanetSide 2 - Official website opens

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:40 PM PDT

Just a friendly reminder, PlanetSide 2 "might" be a Pay to Play title similar to its predecessor, but with the current rave of games going Free to Play, nothing is confirm until an official announcement is made. The PlanetSide series of games focuses on large scale war, and in 2 there will be 3 different factions for players to choose from. Within a single, spacious and unusually big map, these factions will fight for resources using guns, lasers, vehicles, planes, tanks and whatnot.

Having played the game years ago and more recently Mars Wars, sort of a clone (it is now closed), PlanetSide 2 will definitely be one of the games for players to try out. Look, I am a PvE carebear player myself, but if there are hundreds of other players supporting me and vice versa, I am more than happy to storm the front. More info on PlanetSide 2 can be found at its FAQ page here.

BioShock Infinite Behind Closed Doors E3 Demo: Watch it Here

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 11:24 PM PDT

BioShock Infinite won many awards for its showing at E3 (including 1UP's Best of Show), and that was thanks in large part to a behind-closed-doors demo that Irrational Games had to share with the press.

One month later, that 15-minute video has now been released for public consumption. You can watch it above (it starts at about the 4:29 mark) and begin salivating over Infinite just as those who saw it at E3 did. You'll get to see some gunplay, what it's like to travel along the Skyline, how the tears Elizabeth can open are used in combat, and get introduced to the Vox Populi and Infinite's version of the Big Daddy, Songbird.

After you're done watching and have rescued your jaw from the floor, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Celebrate 20 Years of Sonic With Retronauts Live!

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:59 PM PDT

Tomorrow, Retronauts Live! will be celebrating 20 years of Sonic.

OK, we know, we missed Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary by several weeks. In our defense, they've been a pretty manic several weeks, what with us relocating to IGN's offices in the wake of E3. Meh, excuses, right?

Pokemon's First 3DS Game Gets a Promo Video

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:50 PM PDT

A sequel to WiiWare title Pokemon Rumble was announced for 3DS not long ago, and Nintendo has now released a fairly lengthy promotional video in Japan showing off several minutes of gameplay from the upcoming action title.

Super Pokemon Scramble, as it's known in Japan (it'll presumably take on the name Super Pokemon Rumble if and when it's brought to North America to match its predecessor), looks to feature the same sort of button-mashing, melee-based combat that the original WiiWare title was comprised of.

Pokemon Rumble was criticized for its repetition and $15 price tag, which was thought to be too high. If Super Scramble doesn't prove to have enough new content, the latter may be an issue again as it's planned as a full retail release for 3DS and will cost 4,800 yen ($59) when it comes out on July 28.

Rockstar Moving Towards Producing Movies Based on its Games?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 04:38 PM PDT

Red Dead Redemption

A trademark filing for Rockstar Films has been discovered which may indicate the Grand Theft Auto maker is closer than ever to creating movies based on its games.

This isn't the first time the name Rockstar Films has come up. A trademark for the name was originally filed in 2004 and was described as providing "entertainment services in the nature of a live-action and/or animated television program series." Rockstar Games -- through Rockstar Films -- was credited as executive producer on two films, The Football Factory and Sunday Driver. The latter was a documentary on a California-based car club that was included with the Special Edition of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Rockstar has a small section of its website devoted to it here.

The new trademark sounds more expansive. It was filed this past December and was then picked up on recently by SystemLink Alt (via Game Informer). It has not yet finished going through the registration process and won't officially be published in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's official weekly journal until July 19.

Uncharted Film's New Director May be Limitless' Neil Burger

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:01 PM PDT

Uncharted 3

David O. Russell decided to abandon the film version of Uncharted back in May for what were said to be "creative differences." It wasn't the first time he had left, but it will be the last. Variety reports that Neil Burger has been offered the job to write and direct the film.

Burger's most recent film, Limitless, starred Bradley Cooper and Robert de Niro, the latter of which was a possible actor for Russell's Uncharted. Limitless was fairly well received, garnering a 70% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Burger's previous two projects were The Illusionist and The Lucky Ones, which have 74% and 36% ratings, respectively.

Mark Wahlberg was set to play the leading role of Nathan Drake for Russell, with whom he's worked on a number of movies. According to Variety, there is no word on if he's still interested in moving forward with the movie, giving hope to the many fans who hoped Nathan Fillion would get the part.

Origin to Offer Game Center Style Functionality on iOS

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 02:09 PM PDT

OriginAt its Summer Showcase today, EA demonstrated iOS support for Origin, the name for the rebranded EA Store. If you've been wondering why EA hasn't supported Apple's official Game Center, here's why: Origin on iOS will offer much of the same Xbox Live-esque functionality for EA games.

The demonstration centered around showing Origin on iPad. Your friends list shows not only friends on iOS, but also on PC, so you can see a friend playing Battlefield or any other Origin-enabled title on PC. Origin also allows you to launch iOS games from right within the app without having to jump back out to the listing of all your apps. The demo showed the ability to do this with Need for Speed: Shift 2, which will be available soon. Origin handles leaderboards and can send notifications to friends to alert them of things like a record-breaking time you've set in Shift 2.

As there are already similar services on iOS (Game Center and OpenFeint, namely), Origin means you've got another list of friends, high scores, and so on to manage. To encourage users to adopt Origin, one thing EA will do is offer Shift 2 players additional tracks and in-game money for using it.

Dragon Age II: Legacy, the Game's First Big Story-Based DLC, Lands This Month

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 01:57 PM PDT

Dragon Age II Legacy

Dragon Age II was a disappointment to some, and BioWare is aware of that. It's hoping it change that with Legacy, the game's "first major story-based" DLC.

Dragon Age II: Legacy will be on display at San Diego Comic Con later this month, though EA demoed the game for the crowd at its Summer Showcase today. BioWare said the DLC will go deeper into the Hawke family story, particularly that of the father. Legacy will take players to new areas (including an ancient Gray Warden prison) where they'll fight brand-new enemies and encounter an enemy so powerful that it's been kept a secret by the Gray Wardens for thousands of years.

EA also announced a release date for Legacy -- it'll be out on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on July 26 for $9.99 (800 BioWare/Microsoft Points).

Burnout Crash and its Over-the-Top View Coming This Fall

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 01:16 PM PDT

Burnout Crash

Electronic Arts has confirmed what we already knew, that a new Burnout called Burnout Crash is in development and that it features an over-the-top view similar to that of the first two Grand Theft Auto games.

Crash first showed up on a ratings board listing, and has since been further detailed, albeit unofficially. An ESRB listing said it would have an over-the-top view that we can now see in the screenshots EA released today.

The game is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall as a dedicated version of the Crash mode seen in older Burnout titles. It includes a form of Autolog, the system first introduced in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit that allows players to compete against friends without being online at the same time. It's being developed by Criterion, the same team responsible for Hot Pursuit and the Burnout series.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair Hits PS3 This Summer

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 12:55 PM PDT

Castlevania Harmony of Despair

Confirming a report from late in May, Konami has announced that Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (not Dissonance; that's the GBA game) is coming to PlayStation 3.

HD was previously an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive. It came out as a part of last year's Summer of Arcade promotion in August and subsequently saw the release of quite a few DLC packs.

Before its release on XBLA, producer Koji Igarashi said we might see a PSN version if the XBLA version sold well enough. "Right now I'm focusing on Xbox Live Arcade," he said last June. "But there might be a possibility with that. I hope this one sells, and then we can think about PSN."
