EVE Online's Incarna 1.0 coming Tuesday

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT

It's almost Incarna time for residents of CCP's New Eden, and EVE Online's website has been updated with a brief blurb warning users to prepare for some extended downtime on patch day.

The update process is scheduled to last for 14 hours on Tuesday, June 21st, so make sure you've got some long-haul skills in your training queue this Monday. Incarna version 1.0 is bringing the much-ballyhooed captain's quarters patch to EVE, and it represents the first step towards fully functional space station interiors. The update will also feature a new tutorial experience (though the familiar voice of Aura isn't going anywhere), as well as new agent finder and corporation recruitment tools.

CCP says that full patch notes are in the works and in the meantime, you can join the forum discussion at the official EVE website.

Gaijin announces World of Planes MMO

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Is the World War II aviation-based MMO market big enough to support multiple titles? We'll soon find out, as Gaijin Entertainment has just announced its upcoming World of Planes MMO (not to be confused with Wargaming.net's World of Warplanes title which took a bow earlier this month).

Gaijin's press release calls World of Planes a "flying simulation game," and the company will be drawing on its previous genre experience thanks to titles like Wings of Prey and Wings of Luftwaffe. According to the new World of Planes website, the game will feature "hundreds of historically accurate planes" and "flying skills that can be honed and improved with each mission." The site also hints at ground- and sea-based combat along with co-op missions, solo play, and a realistic damage model.

The game will operate under a free-to-play business model, and you'll want to check out our screenshot gallery below before heading to the official World of Planes website to sign up for beta.

PlanetSide Next to be unveiled at SOE Fan Faire

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Even eight years after its launch, Sony Online Entertainment's Planetside still retains a healthy (and borderline fanatical) playerbase. This is almost certainly owed largely to the fact that Planetside remains one of the scant few MMOFPS games on the market. Planetside players, though, have been thirsting for more for quite some time. Thankfully, it appears the wait will soon be over.

Rumors have been flying for what seems like ages, alongside a few sparse screenshots, but Planetside Next seems to be set to be officially unveiled at the upcoming SOE Fan Faire this July. John Smedley, President of SOE, announced on his Twitter, "For all you Planetside Next fans stay tuned for a big announcement at our upcoming Fan Faire in Vegas!" You heard the man! Keep your weapons in their holsters for just a while longer and keep an eye on Massively, because we'll be sure to have all the freshest information as soon as it's out.

Storyboard: The stock

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

So there I was, sitting down and preparing to play through Mass Effect for the third time, except this time it was with the intent of playing a character straight through to the end of the franchise. That meant going through the list of regular roleplaying characters I had, trying to decide who made sense in context. I had already played through twice, which meant my options were a bit more limited, but I was willing to bet that I could find someone in my stable of characters worth playing.

How is this relevant to roleplaying with MMOs? Simple: These are characters whom I'd played and generally created via MMOs, heroes and villains alike. And the lure of sticking to a strong character is seductive because you know whom you'll be playing and how to play the character for maximum impact. But you run a very real risk of being locked into a narrow range of character possibilities, and after a while, having stock characters built up becomes limiting rather than liberating.

The Daily Grind: How dependent are you on internet guides?

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Allow me to indulge in my old-timey voice. Back in the day, we didn't have no dang internets to hold our hands through every twist and turn of them videotronic games. No, we got through by the pluck in our spines, the sheer focus of 10-hour gaming sessions, and the frantic calls to our friends begging for help to pass a level. OK, even by those early days, we were pretty weak when it came to tough spots in games, but still -- it was nothing compared to what we see today.

Times have changed, but our desire to bypass difficult sections of games has not. If we can't cheat our way past it, we'll gladly leap to any aid that presents itself, whether it's a strategy guide, a walkthrough, or an elaborate database devoted to cataloguing every step of every quest in our MMOs.

Today is an honesty check for you: How dependent are you on spoilers to get through quests when you get stuck? Do you try to puzzle things out for yourself, or is your first instinct to tab out and look up the solution? For bonus discussion, does this mean that it's impossible for devs to really surprise us anymore?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Pillar of the community: Vindictus adds a new character and events in 1.31

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 07:00 PM PDT

The always over-the-top Vindictus has released its latest update on the game world, Karok: Pillar of Strength. Actually, more like "Pillar of Smash Your Face In," although that doesn't fit as well on business cards.

The 1.31 update comes with a host of additions to the game, chief among them the ability to play a completely new character. The titular Karok is a hulking 400-pound giant who swings a barbed pillar, knocking foes out of the park. While he boasts great strength and power, his slower speed and lack of AoE attacks make playing him a challenge.

The Karok update also includes new transformations for the Dark Knight and Paladin, a leaderboard ranking system, party member ranking, new avatars for characters, and the end of the game's token system.

To celebrate the update, Nexon is throwing three in-game events. The Blood Brothers Event (June 15th to July 13th) gives your lowbie characters an XP boost if you have a level 40 or higher toon. During the New Recruit Event (June 15th to the 28th), baby-faced characters that hit level 10 will receive a welcome package. And finally, the Power Personified Event (also June 15th to the 28th) will reward new level 20 characters with three dye ampoules.

You can watch the Karok: Pillar of Strength trailer after the jump!

The MMO Report: Nerd-flu edition

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:30 PM PDT

In this week's MMO Report, Casey comes to us directly from E3 2011, where he verbally spars with a variety of game developers while battling off hunger, fatigue, and nerd-flu. Watch Casey's stats slowly dwindle as he confronts the many dangers of E3, such as overstimulation and the dreaded natural light.

The first stop on Casey's E3 journey is an interview with Square Enix's Frank Fonseca, with whom he discusses the upcoming tactical MMORPG Wakfu. He gets a few details on the political system and discovers how tactical combat plays out in an MMO space.

Next, he gets some face-time in with Producer Thomas Farrer and Creative Director Torfi Frans Olafsson from CCP, who tell Casey all about how the interplay between EVE Online and upcoming DUST 514 will work and why DUST 514 is different from other console shooters.

From there he scurries off to En Masse's booth to have a chat with TERA's North American Producer Chris Hager, who discusses TERA's big political system reveal as well as the name of his potential political party.

Last stop on the Casey-train is BioWare's booth, where Casey parleys with Star Wars: The Old Republic's Senior Live Producer Blaine Christine. Blaine gives Casey the low-down on Tatooine, the newly introduced player vehicles, and what players can expect in regard to The Old Republic's much-hyped story.

For the full video, sadly lacking in the Uncle Casey's mailbag department, jump on past the cut.

Lord of the Rings Online fan film trailer released

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Game-related fan films are a dime a dozen at this point, and if there's an MMO out there, chances are someone's made a movie out of its in-game footage and uploaded it to the web. The Fellows Hip: Rise of the Gamers is a horse of a different color, though, as most of its footage is live-action and it focuses on Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online as a plot element instead of the narrative canvas proper.

A Casual Stroll to Mordor is currently featuring a new trailer for the film, which tells the tale of a geeky guy who finds meaning (and apparently, a girl) while questing his way toward the top prize in a LotRO gaming competition. Check out the trailer after the cut, and read more about the flick at The Fellows Hip website.

Duran Duran and Second Life, isn't that bizarre?

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:30 PM PDT

According to Tateru Nino at Dwell On It, Duran Duran had promised its presence in the world of Second Life back in 2006. Second Life residents were hungry like a wolf for more information, but the band was lost in a crowd. At long last, the band announced yesterday the launch of Duran Duran Universe, a new zone in Linden Lab's virtual world. Although there may be no dancing on the sand, community manager Crissy Welinder posted the official announcement to the Duran Duran website: "Duran Duran Universe is packed full of wonderful artistic treasures, interactive features, innovative multimedia and exciting events and games." Every part of the Second Life zone has been carefully selected by members of the band, and they hope it is one continuous party.

For more information about Duran Duran Universe, don't twist through a dusty land, just visit the band's official website.

Captain's Log: The Gospel of Tribble

Captain's Log, Stardate 64959.3...

Hello, compu... what the... shields up, red alert! Brace for impact! A giant Tribble is on the loose, and its name is Season Four. That's right -- the Star Trek Online public test server, Tribble, sometimes nicknamed the Trouble with Tribble, has finally reopened with the major update that we have all been waiting for. This build was first pushed last Friday but was taken down moments later due to a "major database error." The show-stopping kinks have been worked out now, so it is time to get to testing out all of the new content I have been writing about for the past couple of months.

If you have not seen the release notes for this build, there are dozens of updates that will be altering the way you have come to play the game. Not sure what to test? That is what I am here for. The goal of this week's Captain's Log is to provide you a checklist on what to hit up once you patch your game and get on your test toon. Also, if you have never installed the test server, now is a great time -- Cryptic will soon be announcing a Tribble Test Weekend, during which you can log in and receive an exclusive item on the live server just for helping test.

Ensign, warp 10! Let's share some text from the word of Tribble...

Superheroes get a helping hand with Champions Online's weekend boost event

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 04:30 PM PDT

Even the most self-sufficient superhero needs a boost now and then from a welcome ally, which is why Cryptic's starting Champions Online's summer with a weekend of love, boosts, and free content.

Starting Friday, June 17th at 1:00 p.m. EDT and running until Monday, June 20th at the same time, Champions is giving its players a weekend worth of boosts. All players will receive a triad of helpful boosts, including Triumphant Recovery, Heroic Comeback and Team XP. Steam players get a little something extra in the form of a sassy Pistolwhip Sidekick to help with the fights.

On top of all this, Cryptic is making the Demonflame adventure pack free to everyone. Normally this pack is behind a pay wall, so this presents a great opportunity for frugal capes to check out the content and earn a few snazzy rewards before Monday.

The Guild Counsel: An interview with The Syndicate's Sean Stalzer on his new book

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT

As you pack your bags for that trip to the beach (or that annual fan gathering) and you toss in that bottle of sunblock (or aspirin), you might want to make some space in your bags for some summer reading as well. Fortunately, there is a growing number of titles, such as Adam Trzonkowski's Guild Leader's Companion, that examine the methods and lessons of running guilds and online communities. To that list we can add Sean "Dragons" Stalzer's sequel, The Syndicate: Beyond the Legend, which is now available at Lulu and soon to be sold at Amazon.

In the book, guild leader Sean Stalzer picks up from where his first book left off and gives us even more insight into the MMO industry and his guild leadership philosophy. The book is divided into three parts. The first covers The Syndicate's recent history and continued relationship with several MMO studios as well its job writing guides for Prima Games. In the second part, Sean explains his time-tested philosophy for running a guild, dubbed S.U.C.C.E.S.S. And the last section of the book looks at where MMOs are headed and what's needed down the road.

Sean took the time to talk to Massively about his new book, and there was so much to discuss that this interview is split into two parts. In this week's Guild Counsel, Sean talks about the lessons he's learned from his work with MMO studios. He looks back at how it's influenced his leadership approach, and he gives a glimpse of why he's excited about his current work with 38 Studios. Read on for the interview!

Ask Massively: Sort of like literary criticism edition

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT

For those of you not familiar with Irish literature and the nonsensical ditherings of some more famous examples of same, you might not realize that today is Bloomsday, a day celebrating the novel Ulysses. If you've never read Ulysses, you're in for a treat... if your idea of a treat is a phone-book sized tome whose plot leaps and bounds like an inert lump of granite. It's a heartwarming tale of a man's growth into boyhood, a boy's growth into surrogate sonhood, and an author's growth into the sort of man who would submit Finnegan's Wake as a serious literary work with a straight face.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, it's time for this week's edition of Ask Massively. And today's questions aren't going to lie down and take it, since we're fielding questions about Defiance as well as the sometime-this-year-probably release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. As always, if you've got a question you want answered next week, you can send it along to ask@massively.com or aim it toward the comment field.

One Shots: The sting of justice

The APB: Reloaded community continues turning out in force for One Shots! Today's image comes to us from the Enforcer side of the game:
My name is Seadee, and I'm an officer in W.A.S.P. -- Warfare Activities Specialist Protection. We have been playing APB since the Realtime Worlds days; in the beta we were the number one Enforcer clan, and to this day, we remain in the spotlight in game. Everyone comes across W.A.S.P. at some point in APB, usually at the end of our STING (our crack squad of elite players). Our Hive Squads (our core playerbase) patrol day and night, bringing the crims to justice! This screenshot shows our clan doing a district takeover. We got 25 of our members all in one place, so naturally we had to take a few pictures.
Are you ready to show off your guild? Gather up your best group shots of you and your guildmates. Whether you're hanging out, enjoying guild housing, taking out a huge enemy, or throwing a party, send a screenshot of your guild in action to oneshots@massively.com along with your name and the name of the game, and tell us about your guild!

Inaugural Fallen Earth dev blog talks PvE, PvP, and roleplay content

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Yesterday we broke the news that GamersFirst had acquired Fallen Earth and has set about molding the post-apocalyptic sci-fi title into a free-to-play experience. Today we're happy to tell you about the new Fallen Earth dev blog and its lengthy inaugural post.

The entry comes courtesy of associate game director Joseph "Linus" Willmon, and he expends a good deal of virtual ink on topics that include the free-to-play roadmap, various changes that will result from the conversion, a transition time frame, and post-F2P design priorities. While the entire post is quite intriguing for fans of the game's grungy wasteland shtick, that last bit is particularly interesting since it specifically targets three groups of players (one of which is almost universally ignored in dev circles) and promises them content updates.

"Anyone who's played Fallen Earth knows there are three core groups -- sometimes always at odds with one another -- that form the basis of the community: PvP players, PvE players, and roleplayers. The design priorities for the future will look towards building specific features and content aimed at each group, making the world much more robust and, we hope, exciting to experience," Willmon writes.

The Perfect Ten: Shapeshifters

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Because we are true geeks, last weekend my wife and I went to see X-Men: First Class. Afterward, we got into a discussion about what mutant power we'd pick for ourselves if we had the choice. I was torn between teleportation and quick healing, while my wife wanted to be able to turn into cash to pay off our mortgage. I think one of us is more grounded in the real world than the other.

But the more I think about it, the more I was intrigued with the idea of a shapeshifter. To be anyone would give you unparalleled freedom -- and plenty of chances to get into mischief, too. Come to think of it, it's probably best I'm not granted that particular superpower.

However, plenty of MMOs do give players the chance to shift between their normal forms and something else entirely. While there are far more than 10 examples that the brain trust over here came up with, I'm going to pick out my favorites to highlight.

This week's edition of I-can't-believe-they're-making-that-into-an-MMO comes courtesy of Fox and the Family Guy. Yes, Family Guy. The MMO. We're not kidding. Details are pretty scarce at this point, so the wisecracks we're dying to make about history's worst IP-to-game translations will have to wait until gameplay footage, screenshots, or trailers are available.

As it stands, Family Guy Online was announced via its official website, and Fox has also set up a Facebook presence as well as the usual social media suspects. Interested parties can register on the official site, and while said registration doesn't guarantee you a beta slot, the site does say that registration will put you "among the first in line for the closed beta." Stay tuned to Massively for further Family Guy MMO news as it happens!

gPotato has published a new press release for Aika Online, and the free-to-play fantasy title's largest expansion to date is being prepped for an August launch. Epic II adds a new campaign to Aika alongside new weapons, armor, skills, skins, and a new zone.

Players will journey to the island of Traband to battle dozens of new mobs, partake of over 100 new quests, and level their characters from 70 to 75 courtesy of the cap increase. If that's not enough, Epic II boasts a new PvP system that ignores alliances and focuses on tower control by the game's various nations.

Aika players will also be treated to an XP bonus for the remainder of June, while July will feature various bonus events designed to bring everyone up to speed for the expansion. More info on these events is forthcoming, and in the meantime you can learn more about Aika at gpotato's official website.

DVD rental company Redbox will be adding a select lineup of videogames to its kiosks beginning tomorrow.

As originally announced last week, the company will kick off its renewed efforts to move into the world of videogame rentals with prices double that of a DVD. For $2 plus tax, you can rent a game for one day. It might seem a bit pricey, and it certainly would be if you intend to hold on to a title for an extended period. But as a way of trying out a demo-less game for a day or two, it seems like a very convenient option. Some Redbox kiosks had been previously offering games, but it now appears to be a much larger point of emphasis for the company.

With retail rental stores like Hollywood Video going out of business and Blockbuster shutting down many of its stores, rental-by-mail service GameFly has become the most popular way to rent games in the United States. It allows subscribers to keep games for as long as they wish, but it's not entirely ideal because you're forced to wait while games are shipped back and forth. The immediacy of Redbox -- which operates out of kiosks located inside and outside of stores -- is sure to appeal to some.

FarmVille Maker Files Lawsuit Over Copycat Games

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 04:21 PM PDT

Update: Vostu is denying the allegations Zynga has brought against it. In a statement sent to 1UP, company spokesman Davidson Goldin said, "Zynga has been accused of copying so many games that they've sadly lost the ability to recognize games like ours that are chock full of original content and have been independently created. Vostu has 500 brilliant employees working night and day making hand drawings and writing proprietary code for online games that our 35 million users worldwide enjoy.

"Zynga's anti-competitive effort to bully us with a frivolous lawsuit -- especially when we have some of the same key investors -- is pathetic. While Zynga plays games with the legal process we will continue focusing on using our substantial resources to create games that entertain our customers."

Original Story: Zynga has sued Brazilian social game company Vostu, accusing it of copyright infringement. The massively successful FarmVille developer alleges Vostu has copied nearly everything about its games and, in the process, "continue[s] to harm Zynga irreparably."

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Comprised of Original Co-Op Missions - Report

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:37 PM PDT

Mass Effect 3

A rumor last year suggested a multiplayer-focused Mass Effect game was in development before a separate report said that Mass Effect 3 would include a multiplayer component. The possibility remains unconfirmed by BioWare, but two new reports today reaffirm that multiplayer is coming in ME3.

Eurogamer reports a four-player, online co-op mode is included. It's a "standalone" component and has "competitive elements." The story refers to the possibility of something similar to Gears of War's Horde mode or Halo's Firefight as a possibility. Both of those examples see players working together to fight off increasingly difficult waves of AI-controlled enemies.

BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka told Eurogamer last week, "We haven't talked at all about multiplayer in the Mass Effect franchise, but we're exploring multiplayer in all of our games and all of our franchises." He added, "It's always an idea we're interested in."

18,000 BioWare Accounts Compromised in Latest Attack

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 02:27 PM PDT

BioWare

In a breach that's being called "extremely limited" in scope, the accounts of about 18,000 Neverwinter Nights forum users have been compromised.

According to EA, this is a "very small percentage of total users," and among the information potentially exposed were e-mail addresses, account usernames, passwords, countries, and birth dates. Any account that was connected to an EA Account opens the door for any information connected with the latter (such as a mailing address and billing address) to have also been accessed.

EA and BioWare became aware of the breach on June 14 and began securing the servers for BioWare Edmonton's NN forums. Legacy BioWare accounts have been disabled and any affected EA Accounts have had their password reset, which is one indication that your account was affected. E-mails have also been sent out to those users who are involved. If your EA Account password still works and you didn't receive an e-mail informing you of the situation, you should be safe.

Wii U Games Pulled From E3 Due to Underclocked Hardware - Report

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:38 PM PDT

The Wii U developments kits that developers have been working with are reportedly "underclocked." Third-party games are, as a result, not looking much better than what's current available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and due to that, Nintendo apparently opted to not show them last week at E3.

This is all according to a report by Hit Detection, the consulting firm founded by former Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal. It states, "However, due to titles not looking much better than what is currently available on Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo decided late in the game to not show those titles and focus instead on tech demos."

During its E3 press conference, Nintendo showed a sizzle reel of third-party games -- including Ghost Recon Online, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Darksiders II. They looked just as good as anything on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360; as it turned out, that's because the footage came from the games running on those systems. According to Hit Detection, Darksiders II "could have been shown" as it was up and running on the Wii U's dev hardware.

Alice: Madness Returns Review

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Wonderland has always been near and dear to my heart, probably owing in large part to me sharing the same name as the little girl who fell down that rabbit hole oh so very many years ago. But the story of Alice traveling into her imaginary world is so full of beautiful imagery; it's a rich breeding ground from which to take creative liberties, and Alice: Madness Returns does a good job of twisting the existing material into something new and interesting, yet still instantly recognizable.

Alice's movements are smooth and effortless, which makes both platforming and combat feel fluid and easy. Switching between her arsenal of weaponry is seamless, and allows you to chain swipes from her Vorpal blade with hits from her Hobby Horse or a barrage of pepper-bullets from the Grinder without fuss. Her abilities to jump (triple jump, even), twirl, float, and dash (in a burst of butterflies) over obstacles, and to avoid enemy attacks are a treat to make use of while working your way through the expansive levels. Alice is even able to shrink down (drink me!) to either enter small keyholes, or reveal hidden platforms and messages painted on walls that can only been seen while tiny.

Bobby Kotick is an Actor in Brad Pitt's New Movie

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:36 PM PDT

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has an acting role in an upcoming Brad Pitt movie.

You read that right.

As seen in the trailer above, Kotick plays the role of the Oakland Athletics owner in Moneyball, a film starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill that's based on the book of the same name. The book tells the story of how Billy Beane, the A's general manager, was able to build a successful baseball team through the use of advanced metrics and statistics despite having a relatively small amount of money to work with.

Hunted: The Demon's Forge Review

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:15 PM PDT

You can clearly envision what the pitch for Hunted: The Demon's Forge sounded like: "It's the depth and addictive replay ability of Diablo, but with the visceral camera and controls of Gears of War." On paper, that doesn't sound half bad. But with an abundance of broken elements, and a notable lack of polish on the ones that do work, the game comfortably settles for mediocrity.

The story revolves around a pair of mercenaries that traverse the standard litany of fantasy environments in search of the Mayor's daughter. If you think that plot sounds like Final Fight with magic missiles, you'd be right. Unless you are a Lucy Lawless aficionado, the story will most likely bore you. Even the most diehard of fantasy fans will groan at the pure barrage of clichés and stereotypes that appear at every beat of the campaign. And for a game that hinges on cooperative play, the relationship between the two leads might just be the weakest aspect of the story. At its best, their banter is acceptably pithy. The rest of the time, it's a mute-worthy affair, with your given partner either sexually harassing you, or mocking you for not being able to find your way out of a poorly designed labyrinth.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Adds Five New Maps This Month

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 12:03 PM PDT

Call of Duty Black Ops DLC leak

On the heels of a leaked GameStop promotional poster showing a new map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, Activision officially announced the Annihilation DLC pack today.

This is the third map pack to be released for Black Ops, matching the number received by Treyarch's previous CoD title, World at War. It'll include four new competitive multiplayer maps carrying the names seen in the leak: Drive-In, Silo, Hazard, and Hangar 18. It also includes a new Zombies "experience" called Shangri-La, described by Treyarch boss Mark Lamia as "an exotic and mysterious map filled with deadly traps, dark secrets and innovative gameplay that will challenge even the most daring Zombie hunters."

As with the previous two map packs, it'll be coming to Xbox 360 first, presumably at the same 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15) price. It's scheduled for a June 28 release, followed by a double XP weekend event starting on July 1. PlayStation 3 and PC versions will follow a later time; no specific date for either platform was specified.

Estar: Wars of Religion - A brief introduction

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 10:42 PM PDT

(Source) Korean MMO developer, Naru Entertainment revealed some new information about its latest online game, Estar Online in a press conference yesterday. As usual, Korean gaming portal This Is Game is there with the latest news. The biggest feature revealed so far will be the Flying Battle Ships, with them known as AMOS. You can see the system in action in the 2nd half of the trailer below.

It is actually the guild base for all guilds and once they are airborne, opposing guilds are able to dock mid-air beside each other and carry out Guild Vs Guild battle on-board both ships. Have you seen how pirate gangs fight each other? That is basically the idea here. Except it takes place in the skies. And ships are piloted manually with the ability to bomb each other down into smithereens. Apparently, the losing guild members will crash onto land together with their ship, like a meteor.

Other early features include an active Day and Night system, causing NPCs to relocate themselves while some quests will only be activated at different times. For example, there is a quest happening at night which needs players to use a torch and seek out items. A card-based skill system is implemented in Estar, hence players must choose which skills are more functional during different situations and equip them. The game's first Focus Group Testing is scheduled to being in September.

Firefall - Webzen admits lack of funds

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 09:53 PM PDT

For the past few months, I have been posting about the saga between Red 5 Studios and Korean MMO company Webzen over the publishing rights for Firefall. Today, Webzen finally admitted that the company has ran into serious financial problems due to lack of funds and is going through heavy restructuring. The company hence does not have the ability to publish and market Firefall.

However, Webzen insisted that as the company poured much development funds for Red 5 Studios, Firefall's publishing rights will be decided by Webzen on which other company to obtain it. Webzen also confirmed that it is looking to let other companies publish their games in Korea rather than doing it themselves. A Webzen spokesperson added that they will not entertain the idea of passing Firefall's publishing rights to Red 5 Studios Korea. Earlier, Webzen has already canceled the development of MU Online 2 and focused on SUN Online 2 instead due to financial hiccups. Please note that Firefall for North America and Europe remains unaffected.
