Kolkata: A potential Vodafone Idea (VIL) shutdown could push opex and capex levels up in the near-term for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm, but such cost upticks would be more than offset by strong customer gains for both telcos if the sector takes on a private sector duopoly structure, analysts said.BofA Securities said if VIL, with over 300 million users, is pushed to bankruptcy, and India becomes a two-player telecom market, "opex could increase (for Airtel) by 15-20% due to a reversal of existing tower sharing agreements, and capex could increase too in the near term".But Airtel and Jio, it said, would be "big beneficiaries" in terms of market share gains, though adding that the Mukesh Ambani-led telco, which doesn't face any material (AGR) payment risks (unlike Airtel) is better positioned in the long run and to also invest in 5G with less pressure on its balance sheet". 74183393 Analysts though said it won't be a cakewalk for either Airtel or Jio as they would need to invest top dollars in fresh spectrum resources to boost their respective network capacities to take on VIL's customers. Experts believe this further reduces the struggling telcos's chances of withstanding its over Rs. 53,000 crore AGR shock.VIL shares closed 0.6% lower at Rs. 3.42 on BSE on Monday.Goldman Sachs said Airtel's stock may currently be pricing in an ARPU (average revenue per user) of Rs181, assuming one-third of Vodafone Idea's subscribers move to the company over the next couple of years.Airtel shares were virtually unchanged, closing at Rs. 565 on BSE on Monday.If VIL indeed shuts down, Jio would need to launch another aggressive 4G featurephone offer to attract Vodafone Idea's user base, many of which are still on 2G and 3G, who by default would otherwise move to Airtel that offers the legacy technologies, say experts.Sharma of SBICap Securities said, "Airtel might need to evaluate offering 4G handset subsidy to attract VIL's 2G/3G users and get them to upgrade to 4G", especially since it has been "underinvesting in 2G and is also shutting down 3G services nationally by March".Experts added that Airtel and Jio have leverage issues, particularly Airtel, which, post a potential Rs. 35,586 crore AGR payout to the government, may not be able to bid aggressively in the next airwaves sale.Separately, they said if VIL were to shut down soon, and the government is eager to sell the company's spectrum resources to Jio and Airtel for ensuring tele-density levels don't crash, it may consider auctioning such airwaves at a sharp discount.
New Delhi: A bunch of startups are tweaking their compensation packages to include more employee stock options, after the budget proposed a deferment of tax on the stock component for such companies incorporated after April 1, 2016.According to the proposal in finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman's February 1 budget, employees at young startups would get the option to defer payment of tax on ESOPs — instead of paying tax at the time of stock allotment, they can pay it when they exit the company, at the time of selling the shares or five years after allotment, whichever is earlier.The Man Company, Deal Share, CallHippo, FlexiSpaces and AdvisoryMandi are among the startups that are looking at this option."The budget proposal to defer the timing of payment of taxes on ESOPs provided by eligible startups would make such ESOPs more attractive to employees and eligible startups can now look at ESOPs as a key compensation component in their initial years when they face a liquidity crunch," said Shalini Jain, partner, People Advisory Services, EY.Emami-funded The Man Company is trying to rope in top talent from FMCG companies by allotting more ESOPs that has now become increasingly attractive for new hires, the Gurgaon-based company's founder said."Definitely, the change in ESOP taxation will help us attract more talent. We would continue to make stocks more appealing for acquiring premium and key talent," said Hitesh Dhingra, who is also its managing director.Over last one year, the company has hired six to seven employees from established FMCG companies by offering a mix of salary and ESOPs. As a young company, it is difficult to match up with the salaries offered to top talent in established companies. "ESOPs are helpful to fill up for the pay gaps and help in pulling top talent from established companies," said Dhingra.CallHippo founder Ankit Dudhwewala said the inclination towards ESOP would be higher after the budget announcement. "Bootstrapped startups like ours definitely will benefit from this," he added.Many startups see this as an opportunity to convince top and critical talent from brick-and-mortar companies to come on board and benefit from the growth opportunities that only startups could offer.CallHippo was in the process of structuring an ESOP pool even before the budget announcement. "But post the budget announcement, the ESOP pool has become much wider and it will become easier for the employees to manage cash flows," said Dudhwewala.However, many older startups, such as Open, Yocket, UpGrad and Toprr, as well as tax experts at EY and PwC, believe that more could have been done by the government to turn ESOPs into a stronger wealth creation tool."ESOP taxation has been a key hindrance in effectively utilising the benefits of ESOPs for startups. With the deferring of the point of taxation, there is slight relief to make it a sweetener, however, the construct still does not completely ensure benefit flows effectively to employees," Open co-founder Deena Jacob said.Consultants like Kuldip Kumar, a tax partner and the leader at PwC India Global Mobility Practice, were also expecting more incentives for startups. "It would have been more beneficial to allow one-point taxation at the time of sale of shares. This would have then brought to tax the realised gain only and helped startups to attract talent," said Kumar."ESOPs functions as a significant advantage tool for them, principally in fast-growing startups whose valuations grow at a fast rate," Advisorymandi director Kuldeep Tomar said."Startups like ours welcome this announcement," said Sandeep Singh, the founder of FlexiSpaces.com. "This will help in attracting, retaining talent and creating more engaged employees, and provide a cost-effect company benefit."
New Delhi: Ever ordered a smartphone from the likes of Amazon and Flipkart and got one with the manual in, say, Chinese? Or ever found a smartphone model online in India that hasn't been launched in the country? Possibly, yes. And while these phones may have been shipped legally, selling it to consumers in India is illegal.According to a survey by community platform LocalCircles, 14% of the 23,000 respondents said they have received a handset with the manual in a foreign language, besides English. And 12% of the respondents said they are able to order a phone that is not launched in India from an Indian or international ecommerce website."A product not launched in India can be brought to the country after paying all duties and taxes without any issue," said Navkender Singh, research director at IDC India. "However, selling it through a national or international ecommerce marketplace or a retail store counts as an illegal shipment or sale."One such feature phone variant is Nokia 2720 Flip, which is listed on Amazon India at a price of Rs 7,499. But it appears the company hasn't as yet launched it in the world's second largest smartphone market. "HMD Global has officially not launched Nokia 2720 Flip in India and hence cannot comment on the authenticity of the phone being sold on the ecommerce marketplace," an HMD spokesperson told ET in an emailed query. HMD manufactures Nokia phones globally.For any electronic device to be sold in India, it is mandatory to be registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), said Faisal Kawoosa, research analyst at TechArc. Nokia 2720 Flip is not listed under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) on the BIS portal. Queries sent to Amazon India did not illicit any response till press time.Flipkart said it ensures stringent product assessment before listing it on its platform and takes proactive action to delist any such seller."As part of our onboarding process, sellers have to follow strict guidelines and undergo stringent quality checks, which helps them remain compliant with the laws of the land," a Flipkart spokesperson told ET in an email."We are constantly working with our sellers to ensure that their catalogues are up to date with all the government rules and regulations, and we take swift action in delisting and blacklisting any sellers found to be in violation of Indian laws," he said.As per the survey, among the top mobile phone brands, Samsung and Xiaomi devices being ordered online received the most votes—12% and 17%—respectively for carrying a foreign language manual. "Xiaomi is proactive in dealing with customer complaints on social media. Whenever we come across an unauthorised seller who is indulging in any malpractice such as listing Xiaomi phones at a price higher than MRP, we alert the concerned etailer who takes relevant action against the seller," said a spokesperson for Xiaomi.They added that this issue too could be covered in the upcoming ecommerce policy and bring a framework for the customs department to ensure that only phones with BIS-CRS are given clearance on ports.
Apple Inc warned on Monday it was unlikely to meet a sales target set just three weeks ago amid lost production and weakening demand in China from the coronavirus outbreak. The illness has killed 1,770 in China and stricken some 70,500 people, with millions of others confined to their homes and factories slow to reopen after the Chinese New Year holiday break was extended due to the virus. Manufacturing facilities in China that produce Apple's iPhone and other electronics have begun to reopen, but they are ramping up more slowly than expected, Apple said. That will mean fewer iPhones available for sale around the world, making Apple one of the largest Western firms to be hurt by the outbreak. Some of its retail stores in the country remain closed or are operating at reduced hours, which will hurt sales this quarter. China accounted for 15% of Apple's revenue, or $13.6 billion, last quarter, and supplied 18% of revenue in the year-ago quarter. In late January, Apple had forecast $63 billion to $67 billion in revenue for the quarter ending in March. It did not offer a new revenue estimate nor provide a profit forecast on Monday. "The magnitude of this impact to miss its revenue guidance midway through February is clearly worse than feared," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote in a note. Apple's stock is expected to face a knee-jerk reaction on Tuesday, when Wall Street reopens after the Presidents Day holiday, Ives said. Analysts have estimated that the virus may slash demand for smartphones by half in the first quarter in China, the world's biggest market for the devices. "The health and well-being of every person who helps make these products possible is our paramount priority," Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said in a statement released by Apple. It will reopen China stores "as steadily and safely as we can," the company added. Globally, supplies of iPhones will be limited as Apple's manufacturers work toward operating plants at full capacity, the company said. It plans to provide more information in April, when it releases first-quarter results. Wedbush said it remained optimistic that Apple would be able to recover from the coronavirus setback. "While trying to gauge the impact of the iPhone miss and potential bounce back in the June quarter will be front and center for the Street, we remain bullish on Apple for the longer term," Ives said. The disruption follows a strong December quarter for iPhone sales, which were up for the first time in a year. That could provide an opening for mobile phone rival Samsung, which has invested in manufacturing capacity in Vietnam and elsewhere. Apple's contract manufacturers have added far more locations inside China than outside, with major supplier Foxconn expanding from 19 locations in 2015 to 29 in 2019 and another supplier, Pegatron Corp , going from eight to 12 locations, according to data from Apple. In contrast, Samsung had signaled early in the U.S.-China trade war that it could meet U.S mobile phone demand without China production. Samsung is also far less exposed to China as an end market. Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai Motor Co and General Motors Co have said their auto production lines were, or could be, hit by Chinese factories that are slow to restart because of the virus.
Bengaluru: Good omen for electric vehicles?Reserves of lithium, a rare metal critical to build batteries for electric vehicles, have been discovered in Mandya, 100 km from Bengaluru — a find that should boost local manufacturing of EV batteries.Researchers at the Atomic Minerals Directorate, a unit of India's Atomic Energy Commission, have estimated lithium reserves of 14,100 tonnes in a small patch of land surveyed in the Southern Karnataka district, according to a paper to be published in the forthcoming issue of journal Current Science."The present data provides a total estimation of available Li2O as about 30,300 tonnes over an area of 0.5 km x 5 km, which works out to about 14,100 tonnes of lithium metal," said N Munichandraiah, Emeritus Professor at the Indian Institute of Science and an expert on battery technologies.But, to put this in perspective, the lithium find is small compared to many major producers. As the professor puts it: "If one compares with 8.6 million tonnes in Chile, 2.8 million tonnes in Australia, 1.7 million tonnes in Argentina or 60,000 tonnes in Portugal, 14,100 tonnes is not that large."Lead author of the paper, PV Thirupathi, did not respond to mails seeking comment.India currently imports all its lithium needs. 74184050 Not Enough Exploration EffortIts imports of lithium batteries tripled to $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2019 from $384 million in FY17.In the 8 months to November, 2019, the country's lithium battery imports stood at $929 million, according to data shared by science & technology minister Harsh Vardhan in Parliament on February 2.Experts say while India requires lithium for its energy needs, there has been no comprehensive effort to map local reserves of lithium so far."We have not explored so far whether we have adequate reserves of lithium," says Dr Rahul Walawalkar, President of India Energy Storage Alliance, a grouping that looks at battery technologies. "We don't know the potential".So far, in the absence of local mines for lithium, India has set up Khanij Bidesh India Ltd to source and acquire mines in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. Mumbai: Novartis, among the world's top 10 drug makers, does not anticipate any supply disruptions from the Covid-19 epidemic to impact the production and distribution of its drugs anywhere, including India, global CEO Vasant Narasimhan said in an interview to ET.Narasimhan said Novartis is confident of covering its production and distribution requirements for the "time being" from the existing stock of raw material.There are fears the Covid-19 pandemic will affect pharma industry supply chains since companies in India and around the world import a bulk of raw materials from China, the epicentre of the outbreak. The difference between returns from bank fixed deposits and lower-rated non-convertible debentures (NCDs) is the highest in a decade. Finance companies such as Shriram Transport Finance, IFCI and IIFL Finance, which do not enjoy top-notch credit rating, could return 4-6 per cent higher than the highest interest rate offered by a State Bank of India fixed deposit. Financial planners said the disparity in the rates makes a case for investment in NCDs of select finance companies."Typically, a AAA rated paper trades 100 basis points over the 10-year GSec, while a AA rated paper commands a 200 basis points premium," said Vikram Dalal, managing director, Synergy Capital. Currently, the 10-year benchmark trades at 6.4 per cent, which means a AAA rated NCD should trade at 7.4-7.5 per cent and a AA rated NCD at 8.5-9 per cent.Finance companies such as Shriram Transport Finance, IFCI and IIFL Finance, which do not enjoy top-notch credit rating, are returning 10-12 per cent every year, while the highest interest rate of a deposit with SBI is around 6 per cent. Bond yields and prices move in opposite direction. The environment has been tough for investors ever since the IL&FS crisis broke out in September 2018. Subsequently, DHFL and Reliance Home Finance defaulted on interest payment to their NCD holders which further weakened sentiment and pushed up yields. Over the last one month, the rating downgrade of Vodafone Idea has worried investors.Investment advisors said returns or higher yields alone should not be the consideration for investing in lower-rated papers."Investors must understand the risk well before investing and limit such purchases to 10-20 per cent of their fixed income portfolio," said Bhansali of GEPL Capital. "In the current environment it is better that investors opt for lower tenure NCDs that come up for maturity in 2-4 years as the environment is still fluid."
Mumbai: IT services provider Cognizant has said the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 could impose stringent obligations on it for localisation of sensitive data, and along with regulatory changes in other countries may lead to additional compliance costs."If enacted in its current form, it would impose stringent obligations on the handling of personal data, including certain localisation requirements for sensitive data. Other countries have enacted or are considering enacting data localisation laws that require certain data to stay within their borders," the Teaneck, New Jersey-based firm said in its annual report, highlighting it under risk factors to business for the coming year.The Bill was recently cleared for introduction in the ongoing Budget session of Parliament.A company may have to pay a penalty of up to Rs 15 crore or 4% of its global turnover if found violating norms under the Bill.Failure to conduct a data audit will attract a fine of Rs 5 crore or 2% of the annual turnover of the company."Complying with changing regulatory requirements requires us to incur substantial costs, exposes us to potential regulatory action or litigation, and may require changes to our business practices in certain jurisdictions, any of which could materially adversely affect our business operations and operating results," Cognizant said.Europe's General Data Protection Regulation, on which the data protection Bill has been modelled, cost US Fortune 500 companies up to $7.8 billion and UK's FTSE 350 companies up to $1.1billion for compliance preparation, according to an earlier report by International Association of Privacy Professionals and Ernst & Young.Technology companies will have to invest in changes to data architectures, including local data centres, once the Bill becomes law, analysts said."Some short-term disruptions are possible, but the answer to this would be significant investment in data governance. It will impact smaller providers more because they have to create special provisions, change processes and systems of transferring data," said DD Mishra, Senior Director Analyst at technology research house Gartner.

For the first time, 75% of the offers were above Rs 20 LPA with average CTC of top quartile at Rs 37.3 LPA.33% of the candidates got placed in Consulting, Strategy and General Management domain. Prominent recruiters offering roles in this domain were ABG, Accenture Strategy, Airtel, Bain & Company, Capgemini E.L.I.T.E, EY, Flipkart, Kearney, McKinsey & Company, Shell, TAS, and Xiaomi.The Operations/IT/E-commerce domain received 26% of the total offers from companies like Amazon, American Express, Cloudtail, Delhivery, Flipkart, Freshworks, Go-MMT, Infoedge, Microsoft and RBS, according to information shared by the institute.
