The U.S. Navy is looking for new fabrics for pilots' shirts that can be embedded with biosensors to monitor the pilot's physiological health during flight. They also have to be Berry Amendment compliant (at least 50% US-made). And, most important, comfy. https://t.co/zJ9oXxwIaZpic.twitter.com/QFS5Cqftx1
The "biosensing garments" could help gather information about incidents where aviators suffer hypoxia-like symptoms and about their general wellbeing.
The U.S. Navy is looking into buying specialized fabric to make biosensing suits for its pilots and aircrew, which would be able to collect physiological data, such as heart rates and deepness of breath. This comes as the service, as well as the U.S. Air Force and NASA, continue to conduct research into and search for solutions to the causes of hypoxia-like symptoms that have plagued pilots across various aircraft types in recent years. The new clothing could also collect more general data on the health and wellness of aviators to improve their performance, avoid injuries, and more.
Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) released the request for information regarding "physiological monitoring fabrics" for "biosensing garments suitable for Naval aviation" on Dec. 23, 2019. Steve Trimble, Aviation Week's Defense editor and good friend of The War Zone, was among the first notice the contracting announcement, highlighting it in a Tweet on Dec. 26.

* Witnesses saw him walk around fence and enter military facility from rocks along the water * Liao claimed he was snapping pictures of sunrise, but images of restricted area were found on phone
The day after Christmas, a Chinese man in the United States said he rose early because he wanted to take photographs of the sunrise on the grounds of the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida.
It was only a matter of time before witnesses spotted Liao Lyuyou at 6.50am on Thursday walking around a perimeter fence and entering the military facility from the rocks along the water.
They warned Liao he was trespassing in a restricted area, known as the Truman Annex, as he took photographs of government buildings near "sensitive military facilities", according to a federal criminal complaint filed on Thursday.
* The Navy this month announced that its new anti-ship missile reached early operational capability with the F/A-18 fighter in August. * The Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile can deliver a 1,000-pound penetrating warhead at a range of up to 500 nautical miles and has a unique sensor and targeting system to hone in on targets in even the most contested environments.
The newest weapon in the Navy's arsenal is ready for action.
The Navy last week announced that the service's new AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) achieved early operational capability with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in August, a major milestone for the air-launched cruise missile.
The LRASM previously achieved EOC with the B-1B Lancer bomber back in December 2018.
Conceived by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a replacement for the AGM-88 Harpoon anti-ship missile, the LRASM can deliver a 1,000-pound penetrating warhead at a range of up to 500 nautical miles, according to USNI News.
The blast effect, weapons developers explain, is precisely the intent for the Army's new 50mm weapon – to bring a longer-range, more-lethal measure of firepower to medium caliber armored vehicle attack.
As a small ball of fire shot out of the end of a new 50mm cannon, a cloud of smoke filled the air and, in what seemed like less than one second, an explosion of smoke and fire destroyed a mock enemy target from hundreds of yards away -- on the other side of an Arizona desert valley.
The explosion was precise, burning and shattering a metal target in successive shots of three to five rounds. This blast effect, weapons developers explain, is precisely the intent for the Army's new 50mm weapon – to bring a longer-range, more-lethal measure of firepower to medium caliber armored vehicle attack.

U.S. and international companies helped finance a "Taliban-led terrorist insurgency" in Afghanistan that killed or hurt American service members and civilians, according to a new lawsuit filed Friday.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the lawsuit.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., alleges that the "large Western companies" made protection payments to the Taliban because they had "lucrative businesses in post-9/11 Afghanistan, and they all paid the Taliban to refrain from attacking their business interests."
Key point: President Trump's denuclearization effort is not going well.
By 2020 North Korea could possess as many as 100 nuclear warheads.
That's the startling conclusion of a January 2019 report from RAND, a California think tank with close ties to the U.S. military.
"North Korean provocations and threats have created an unstable environment on the Korean Peninsula," RAND's report explains. "North Korea's ongoing development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles increases the possibility of their use against regional states, furthering instability across the region and beyond, thus affecting vital U.S. interests."
To deliver its nukes, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, as the regime in Pyongyang calls itself, is building up a large stockpile of rockets of varying ranges.
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un convened a meeting of top ruling party officials on Saturday to discuss important policy matters ahead of the year-end deadline set by Kim for the United States, the state news agency said on Sunday.
Kim, chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), guided the first-day session of the plenary meeting to discuss "important matters arising in the party building and activities and in the building of the state and national defense," KCNA news agency said in a statement.
"The immediate orientation of the struggle of the WPK and the state and important policy issues for new victory in our revolution under the present situation were brought up as agendas of the plenary meeting," KCNA said.
KCNA did not provide further details of the meeting, but it said the meeting will be continued.
According to UN data, Venezuela is fast becoming the world's biggest refugee crisis. By the end of 2020, 6.5 million Venezuelans are expected to have been forcibly displaced outside of their home country.
This is up from just 300,000 in 2017. Syria, the biggest global refugee crisis to date, reached its height in 2018 with 6.7 million displaced people. With resettlement programs ongoing, that number is expected to have been reduced to 5.6 by the end of 2019 and might further fall in 2020.
This year birthed some of the most mind-bending military tech we've ever seen.
PUTTING ASIDE our personal feelings on the nature of war and what it is or isn't good for, the fact is that it's a terrible reality of life. It's also, often, where technological development advances at several paces beyond every other sector even remotely like it. These are some of literature's best (and most dystopian) ideas, fully realized. And 2019 especially boasted some of the most mind-bending military tech the world's ever seen.
From an invisibility cloak to a sonic gun that vibrates a target's brain, military researchers really pushed the limits of what we thought was scientifically possible this year, no doubt at least partly thanks to their sometimes astronomically high budgets — looking at you, America.
Without further ado, here is The Coolest (and Scariest) Military Tech of 2019.
Leaders of G5 Sahel countries gathered for emergency talks in Niamey on Sunday after Niger faced the most spectacular military attack on its soil since jihadists gained a foothold in the region.
Reportedly executed by dozens of men on motorcycles, on a base just 124 miles outside of the capital, near the border with Mali, the attack that killed 71 soldiers was claimed by the Islamic State and is being read as a warning that group is fast expanding its territory throughout the region.
The United States' impeachment trial of Donald Trump and the United Kingdom's long-awaited Brexit are sure bets. And after the U.S. military withdrawal from northern Syria in October, Bashar al-Assad may well win his civil war this year.
Many other countries will see pivotal events in 2020, too. Here are five countries to watch.
* Inauguration of a new US$55 billion gas pipeline this week helps cement increasingly close Beijing-Moscow ties that are moving beyond economics into security * Many observers say the two countries' growing security cooperation may evolve into something closer to a military alliance
On Monday, Russia turned on the taps on for a US$55 billion pipeline that will pump natural gas to the energy-hungry Chinese market – the latest step in the "new era" of increasingly close ties between the two countries.
Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin marked the occasion by getting together via video link and exchanging the usual pleasantries. But beyond the warmth and talk of expanding cross-border business, the two countries are being driven together by a common enemy: the United States.
For that reason, relations are expanding beyond broader economic ties to deeper security cooperation, and analysts say that may eventually develop into some form of military alliance.
WNU Editor: I hate it when columnists use the word "enemy" in describing the current state of U.S. - Russia/China relations. The better word is "competitor" and/or "customer". China is a big customer for Russia's resources and military tech, and both sides are grateful for this business. As for their military cooperation .... it stems more from their concerns on what is happening in Asia (war in Afghanistan, India - Pakistan tensions, Islamic terrorism, North Korea, border disputes, etc.) than what the U.S. is doing. That is not to say that there are some tensions with the U.S.. There are after-all a number of current geopolitical competitions between Russia/China and the U.S.. The U.S. is bolstering it alliances with its allies in Asia, much to the chagrin of Beijing. And Russia is concerned about NATO's buildup at its borders. But this talk about a grand China - Russia military/security alliance to counter the U.S. has been around for decades. And in my opinion it is not going to happen. Russia's political and cultural focus is on the West, and it will be for the next few centuries. As for the East, that is where Russia's economic focus will be, especially when it comes to selling resources. As for the Chinese. They are competing economically with the U.S. for a share of global trade and markets. Disputes over companies like Huawei is just a taste on what is going to happen. But these economic conflicts are not going to push Russia and China to form a deeper alliance.
* China is one of four countries that are planning to send missions to Mars in 2020 * The others are the USA, a joint Europe/Russia mission and a UAE orbiting probe * The launch is a test of 'key technologies' that will help China's space ambitions * China also plans to launch the first parts of its new space station in the next year
China has launched one of the world's most powerful rockets in a major step towards its planned mission to send a rover to Mars in 2020.
The 'Long March 5' rocket left the Wenchang launch site on the island of Hainan on Friday carrying a Shijian 20 test satellite.
It launched at 12:45 GMT and the satellite was sent into its planned orbit after 33 minutes, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The success of the Long March 5 launch gets the Chinese space programme back on track after a previous attempt in July 2017 failed mid-launch.
It was a test of 'key technologies related to future space missions', according to the China's National Space Administration.

Japan will send a military vessel and two patrol planes to help protect waterways in the Middle East but will not join a US-led coalition in the region, the government said Friday.
The move comes after attacks this year on tankers in the Gulf including a Japanese tanker, as well as on Saudi Arabian oil installations.
Washington, other Western states and Saudi Arabia blame the attacks on Tehran, which denies any involvement.
* WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT * A 'devastating' blast ripped through a security checkpoint close to a taxation office in Mogadishu today * Mogadishu Mayor said at least 90 civilians, including students and two Turkish nationals, had been injured * The founder of a Mogadishu ambulance service counted the death toll at 76 and said it was likely to rise * In early December militants sparked a seven-hour gunfight when they stormed an upmarket hotel in the city
An explosion at a busy checkpoint in Somalia's capital Mogadishu today killed at least 90 people and wounded dozens, according to an international agency working inside the country.
Rescuers carried dead bodies past the twisted wreckage of a vehicle and minibus taxis smeared with blood.
'The number of casualties we have confirmed is 76 dead and 70 wounded, it could still be higher,' the director of the private Aamin Ambulance services, Abdukadir Abdirahman Haji said.
The blast took place at the Ex-Control checkpoint, a tax collection centre in Mogadishu, and comes amid persistent insecurity in the Horn of Africa nation.

The review led by U.S. Attorney John Durham is making life uncomfortable for America's cautious spy chief.
The prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Bill Barr to examine the origins of the Russia investigation is focusing much of his attention on the CIA, placing the agency's director, Gina Haspel, at the center of a politically toxic tug-of-war between the Justice Department and the intelligence community.
The prosecutor, John Durham, has reportedly asked the CIA for former director John Brennan's communications as he examines the January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that concluded Russian President Vladimir Putin intervened in the election specifically to help Donald Trump.
WNU Editor: I do not think CIA Director Haspel has much of a choice. U.S. Attorney John Durham has been sanctioned by the Justice Department with the President's approval to get to the bottom on how the entire Russian collusion hoax came to dominate Washington politics for the entire Trump Presidency. We have already learned through the Justice Department's Inspector General's report on the gross misconduct within the FBI when it came to just one FISA application. The CIA should also not be immune from such an examination.

(LOS ANGELES) — As freezing water thrashed their rowboat in some of the most treacherous waters in the world, six men fought for 13 days to make history, becoming the first people to traverse the infamous Drake Passage with nothing other than sheer manpower.
They dodged icebergs, held their breaths as giant whales breached near their small boat and rode building-sized waves while rowing 24 hours a day toward Antarctica.
The team of men from four countries finished crossing the Drake Passage on Wednesday in just under two weeks after pushing off from the southern tip of South America.
“This is a really big deal in Antarctic history to hear about this,” said Wayne Ranney, a Flagstaff, Arizona-based geologist who has led expeditions to Antarctica and crossed the Drake Passage in motorized vessels more than 50 times. “One hundred percent of their progress was done with those 12 arms for 600 (nautical) miles. That’s just phenomenal. I can’t even imagine.”
Besides the threat to their lives, the men labored under grueling conditions. Their 29-foot (9-meter) rowboat, named the Ohana, had to be in constant motion to avoid capsizing. That meant three men would row for 90 minutes while the other three rested, still cold and wet.
“You’re rowing inside an open hold, 40-foot sea waves are splashing in your face, near-freezing water is splashing over the bow,” said 34-year-old Colin O’Brady of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, one of the six men on the boat.
“It was quite harrowing,” O’Brady told The Associated Press on Thursday in his first interview after the journey. “By the end, we all lost a good amount of weight and were delirious from the sleep deprivation.”
The men had to use a bucket to go to the bathroom. To rest, two men needed to lie shoulder to shoulder in a tiny space while a third would lay in a fetal position in an even smaller area. “You’re curled up and jammed into a small space, trying to get a few winks of sleep before the alarm would go off and boom, you’re back at it again,” O’Brady said.
The toughest part for O’Brady’s fellow rower, Jamie Douglas-Hamilton of Edinburgh, Scotland, was the constant bombardment from the elements.
“We were hit by winds from every single direction … and the seas down here are very violent — it’s the roughest ocean in the world,” the 38-year-old said. “We almost capsized many times, and the problem with that is the water is so cold that if you go in, you’ve probably got two to five minutes.”
Physically, Douglas-Hamilton said he fought crippling seasickness and numb hands and feet. At one point, a strap he had to wear around his ankles while rowing wore through his boots and cut into his skin all the way to the bone.
“It was absolute agony,” Douglas-Hamilton said.
The other men on the expedition were: Fiann Paul of Reykjavik, Iceland; Cameron Bellamy of Cape Town, South Africa; Andrew Towne of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and John Petersen of Oakland, California.
Paul, Douglas-Hamilton and Bellamy are record-breaking ocean rowers, Towne is a championship rower and has climbed the tallest mountain on every continent, and Petersen was a championship college rower.
In addition to storms and waves, the men dodged icebergs and whales that could easily have destroyed their small vessel. And then there were the mental challenges, especially during the night shift.
“At night we can’t see the waves as they roll and crash into us and we can’t see the horizon so there is no sense of progress,” O’Brady wrote on Instagram as he documented the journey. “It feels like being inside of a washing machine, blindfolded where time is standing still.”
Discovery documented the journey while following the men in a larger, motorized boat. O’Brady’s wife, Jenna Besaw, was on the Discovery boat running logistics and watching her husband’s death-defying adventure.
“There have been some frightening, intense moments when our boat — a 120-foot-long boat — was lurching forward and up and over these massive waves, to see the rowboat hidden for minutes at a time was rather unnerving,” Besaw said.
The row across the Drake Passage is just the latest adventure for O’Brady, who became the first person to traverse Antarctica alone without help last year. A book about that journey is coming out on Jan. 14, 12 years to the day since O’Brady was severely burned in a fire in Thailand. After the fire, he said he was told he would never walk again. He said that prognosis has helped fuel each new adventure.
“I am dreaming of what’s next,” O’Brady said. “To be determined, but I don’t think my expedition life is over.”
For Douglas-Hamilton, the journey across the Drake Passage might be his last time setting a record, and he’s content with that.
“I would rank this as the toughest challenge any of us has ever done,” he said. “This was such a good one, I’d be happy leaving it at this. The memories from this one will last forever.”
A rocket attack on an Iraqi military base killed an American contractor and wounded several U.S. and Iraqi military personnel, the Defense Department said.
Iraqi security forces were “leading the response and investigation” following the Friday night assault on the base in Kirkuk, where coalition forces are based, the Pentagon said in a statement. The names of the contractor and the wounded Americans were not immediately released, and the statement did not provide any further details.
Rocket assaults on or near Iraqi installations that host American troops and personnel have occurred since the fall, and Pentagon officials, including Defense Secretary Mark Esper, have expressed increasing concern about Iranian involvement.
Those attacks occurred as widespread anti-government protests intensified, eventually leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi.
Tensions have been rising across the region, with Iran violently putting down its own protests, and Turkey invading Kurdish territory in northern Syria after President Donald Trump announced a pullout of American forces there.
Early this month, rockets were fired at two Iraqi air bases where American forces are stationed. Seven rockets struck the perimeter of the Al Asad base, and five projectiles landed inside Balad. At Al Asad, the Iraqi army later found a truck rigged to fire rockets with seven empty tubes and eight unfired projectiles.
No one was hurt in those attacks, which were believed to be the work of militants with ties to Iran, according to a U.S. official.
On Thursday, Iraqi President Barham Saleh offered to resign as weeks of deadly protests showed no sign of easing. Mahdi remains in office until a successor is found. Protesters rejected one nominee, and Saleh rejected the candidacy of a second.
Some 500 people have died in clashes between security forces and protesters since Oct. 1, according to Iraq’s independent High Commission for Human Rights. Iraqis, mostly from the Shiite majority population, are protesting against corruption, poor services, and Iran’s sweeping influence in the country.

(MOGADISHU, Somalia) — A truck bomb exploded at a busy security checkpoint in Somalia’s capital Saturday morning, killing at least 78 people including many students, authorities said. It was the worst attack in Mogadishu in more than two years, and witnesses said the force of the blast reminded them of the devastating 2017 bombing that killed hundreds.
At least 125 people were wounded, Aamin Ambulance service director Abdiqadir Abdulrahman told The Associated Press. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed condemned the attack as “heinous” but did not mention the likely culprit, the al-Shabab extremist group, by name.
Police Capt. Mohamed Hussein said the blast targeted a tax collection center during rush hour as Somalia returned to work after its weekend. A large black plume of smoke rose above the capital.
Most of those killed were university and other students returning to class, Mayor Omar Mohamud Mohamed said at the scene. Two Turkish brothers were among the dead, Somalia’s foreign minister said.
Bodies lay on the ground amid the blackened skeletons of vehicles. At a hospital, families and friends picked through dozens of the dead, gingerly lifting sheets to peer at faces. Hundreds of Mogadishu residents began to donate blood in response to desperate appeals.
“Some of those dead were police officers, but most of them were students,” witness Mohamed Abdi Hakim said. Somalis mourned the deaths of so many young people in a country trying to rebuild itself after decades of conflict.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab often carries out such attacks. The extremist group was pushed out of Mogadishu several years ago but continues to target high-profile areas such as checkpoints and hotels in the seaside city.
Al-Shabab is now able to make its own explosives, its “weapon of choice,” United Nations experts monitoring sanctions on Somalia said earlier this year. The group had previously relied on military-grade explosives captured during assaults on an African Union peacekeeping force.
Al-Shabab was blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu in October 2017 that killed more than 500 people. The group never claimed responsibility for the blast that led to widespread public outrage. Some analysts said al-Shabab didn’t dare claim credit as its strategy of trying to sway public opinion by exposing government weakness had badly backfired.
“This explosion is similar like the one … in 2017. This one occurred just a few steps away from where I am and it knocked me on the ground from its force. I have never seen such a explosion in my entire life,” witness Abdurrahman Yusuf said.
The attack again raises concern about the readiness of Somali forces to take over responsibility for the Horn of Africa country’s security in the coming months from the AU force.
Al-Shabab, the target of a growing number of U.S. airstrikes since President Donald Trump took office, controls parts of Somalia’s southern and central regions. It funds itself with a “taxation” system that experts describe as extortion of businesses and travelers that brings in millions of dollars a year.

About Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC)
The Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) is a statutory body in the year 1994 for completing direct enrollment against Group-C posts in the State unit (as against District framework) as might be planned for the OSSC Rules, 1993. There are exactly 85 unique frameworks of posts/benefits under different divisions of Govt to which enrollment is made through this OSSC Commission. Moreover, the OSSC Commission is going by the Chairman, and what’s more, it includes a Member. They are named by the Government and are administered by Rules controlling their enlistment and states of administration of OSSC. What’s more, the OSSC Commission is responsible to the General Administration Department of Government in regulatory and money related issues. Aside from this OSSC additionally gives the OSSC Online offices to the competitors.
The Estimates board of trustees in the Parliament prescribed the setting up of a Service Selection Commission in its 47th report (1967–68) for leading assessments to enroll lower classes of posts. At that point, the new constitution and elements of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) became effective from 1 June 1999. Consistently SSC conducts the SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination for enlisting non-gazetted officials to different government employments.
Even as we try to envision a future for mankind on Mars, there is an urgent need to make our planet once again inhabitable for millions. For starters, everyone, regardless of where they live or how little they make, should have that most basic of human necessities — clean water. There are 785 million people who do not get drinking water. And about half a million people die of diarrhoea caused by contaminated drinking water every year, according to the World Health Organization. By 2030, 700 million people could be displaced because of intense water shortage, according to the UN.The water problems of different regions call for a variety of solutions, and among the most talked-about innovations is making water out of thin air, literally. Zero Mass Water, an American company, makes solar panels that capture moisture from the air and condense it to produce water, which is then sterilised and mineralised to make it potable. Two panels can produce 10 litres a day, enough to meet a family's drinking & cooking needs. But each panel costs $2,000, which is far from affordable for most people of the developing world. The price has to come down significantly for mass deployment in poor neighbourhoods.A waste-treatment contraption called the Omni Processor — funded by Bill Gates and which turns the moisture evaporated from human waste into drinking water (besides generating electricity) — aims to solve the water woes of communities in developing countries. The technology addresses the twin challenges of sanitation and clean water, but its wide acceptability would remain a challenge. Then there is the success of desalination in countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel, which provides a way for countries like India to seek freshwater in the sea.Making clean water available to a large majority, if not all, of the poorest around the world by 2030 will certainly be among the most consequential technological achievements of recent times. This story is part of the 'Tech that can change your life in the next decade'package.
Telecom networks so far have been for people. Now they will be for machines as well and on a mega scale — connecting everything that needs to be connected. In fact, there will be more connected machines than humans. That is the promise of 5G and other such nextgen mobile networks.Machines will be able to talk to each other on 5G networks, launching a large-scale Internet of Things communications era — sensors embedded in everything. At home, appliances like toasters, microwaves, refrigerators and ACs will communicate with you or other devices, bringing it closer to being a smart home.Amazon Echo or Google Home will get updates from the kitchen and the bathroom and replenish stock — at least regular-use items like butter, tea bags and shaving blades. In the outside world, high-speed 5G networks will help machines communicate with almost zilch latency, improving transportation, traffic monitoring, factories, healthcare delivery, smart cities and farms and entertainment. Also expect more powerful virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems."5G will comfortably support AR/VR at scale. That will trigger not just how people play games but transform businesses which need personal presence such as education and healthcare," says Dinkar Ayilavarapu, partner at Bain & Company.5G will also enable many educational and healthcare use cases powered by AR/VR. "If the shift from 3G to 4G was transformational, wait till 5G arrives," says Ayilavarapu.Nearly $1 trillion will be spent on 5G between 2019 and 2025, according to GSMA Intelligence.Over the next seven years, 5G networks will mature across the US, China, Japan, the UK & the European Union. In India, the 5G launch might happen in 2021-22, with 5G auctions likely to be held next year. By 2025, there are likely to be 1.4 billion 5G connections and 5.5 billion 4G connections globally, according to GSMA Intelligence. Pilots for next-generation networks, called 5G Enhanced or 6G, will start towards the end of the next decade.Marcus Weldon, president of Nokia Bell Labs, was quoted as saying that 6G would be "sixth sense experience for humans and machines".With each generation, the capacity of the network increases. 5G is attractive because of its low latency of 4 milliseconds (ms). With the deployment of 6G networks, latency will be down to zero and data transmission speed will be faster than the 1 gigabyte per second that 5G promises to deliver. This story is part of the 'Tech that can change your life in the next decade' package.
In the coming decade, what we know as speed and distance is expected to change entirely. Hypersonic technology may see people travelling from Delhi to New York faster than it takes to cover a 50 km road trip around Delhi NCR today. The progress in hypersonic technology, letting systems travel beyond five times the speed of sound (1,235 km per hour), will also usher in new types of weapons with the capability to strike targets almost anywhere in the world within minutes.Military use will precede travel or other such safe applications as getting hypersonic vehicles to transport humans is currently too complex. If the technology falls into the wrong hands, it would be akin to unleashing Darth Vader on steroids on the world, with the power to hold millions of people as hostage. For, hypersonics are as much about advancements in technology as about the military might of nations. The United States leads research and development in this field, closely followed by China & Russia. Australia, Japan and the European Union also have civilian and military hypersonic research projects.India's Defence Research & Development Organisation has also started work on hypersonics to develop missiles that can travel five times the speed of sound or a little over a mile every second. The hypersonic missiles being tested in the West are 5-10-ft-long, weigh about 250 kg and are encased in ceramic coating, carbon fibre composites or nickel-chromium super alloys.Working as hyper-fast power drills, these missiles can smash or penetrate any target almost undetected by present-day radar systems. The distance between launch and hit could be covered in minutes. The speed of sound is called Mach 1. An object travelling faster than Mach 1 is called supersonic and beyond Mach 5 is hypersonic territory. The US plans to develop systems with speeds of Mach 15 to Mach 20.Mach 20 missiles will move at 4 miles per second and Mach 25 at 5 miles per second — making it difficult for anyone to detect such weapons, let alone stop them.Though much of the development in hypersonics will depend on improvements in material technologies, stuff that can withstand 30 times the speed of a civilian aircraft, enormous heat, friction and stress. Even the test periods do not last long — just 15 seconds. But over the next few years, countries will show off hypersonic capabilities as a deterrent against aggression. Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Boeing are among those developing hypersonic weapons while, in about a decade, Elon Musk's SpaceX aims to carry passengers from New York to Shanghai in under 40 minutes, ushering in the era of super-fast travel. This story is part of the 'Tech that can change your life in the next decade' package.
Indian Railways has selected 100 routes to run 150 private passenger train rakes and bids for the routes are likely to be invited next month, a senior railway official has told ET Magazine. With finance ministry's Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) giving in-principal approval to the proposal on December 19, the path has been cleared for the railways to roll out its reform in engaging private operators, ending its long monopoly in running passenger trains. The official, who did not want to be named, said the major long-distance routes identified for bidding include Mumbai-Kolkata, Mumbai-Chennai, Mumbai-Guwahati, New Delhi-Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram-Guwahati, New Delhi-Kolkata, New Delhi-Bengaluru, New Delhi-Chennai, Kolkata-Chennai and Chennai-Jodhpur.Other prominent routes include Mumbai-Varanasi, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Lucknow, Mumbai-Nagpur, Nagpur-Pune, Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam, Patna-Bengaluru, Pune-Patna, Chennai-Coimbatore, Chennai-Secunderabad, Surat-Varanasi and Bhubaneswar-Kolkata. Some routes connecting New Delhi to Patna, Allahabad, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Katra, Gorakhpur, Chhapra and Bhagalpur have also been selected.73011619 Commercial viability seems to be the key yardstick in picking the routes. Thirty-five of the 100 routes will connect to New Delhi, 26 to Mumbai, 12 to Kolkata, 11 to Chennai and eight to Bengaluru, all metropolitan cities. 73011628 Some of the proposed non-metro routes include Gorakhpur-Lucknow, Kota-Jaipur, Chandigarh-Lucknow, Visakhapatnam-Tirupati and Nagpur-Pune.73011624 When contacted, Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav confirmed the railways is identifying routes for private trains. "PPPAC has already cleared the Railways' proposal of inviting bids from private players to run 150 trains. The bids will be invited soon, maybe in 10-15 days. It will be a milestone for Indian Railways," Yadav told ET Magazine. He said the introduction of private trains along with the government's move to restructure the Railway Board will have long-term spinoffs in the way the national transporter functioned. He refused to give more details.ET Magazine, in its September 22 edition, was the first to report that Indian Railways was planning to induct 150 private trains. In the second week of October, Indian Railways set up an empowered committee of secretaries under NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant to examine the proposal. Railway Board chairman, secretaries at the department of economic affairs and ministry of housing & urban affairs and three senior railway officials are members of the panel.Since then, the group has met five times, indicating the urgency of the plan to induct private trains. "Indian Railways has decided to engage three to four private operators for running trains designed to move at a maximum speed of 160 kmph. Private operators will be allowed to choose their technology and determine the fare," the senior railway official said.Names of the private players interested in bidding for the routes will likely be known at a stakeholders' meeting scheduled for December 31 in New Delhi. The empowered group of secretaries has also given a go-ahead to the modernisation of several railway stations. Nagpur, Gwalior, Amritsar and Sabarmati were bid out last week, for an indicative development cost of Rs 1,300 crore, the official said.
Electricity generated by burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas now constitutes nearly two-thirds of all power produced in the world. But by 2050, the scenario could be quite different, with solar, wind and other kinds of renewable energy responsible for a similar share of the total pie, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF).Integral to this future are batteries that cost a lot less than today and can last longer. This is because unlike conventional energy, which can be generated through the day, solar and wind power are intermittent and the latter cannot meet peak energy demand in the evening without storage.Alternatives to lithium-ion — the reigning battery technology used in phones, laptops, electric cars and smart grids — are being talked about. For instance, solid-state batteries, which do not have the flammable liquid electrolytes present in lithium-ion. But lithium-ion is expected to be the default technology in the near future, especially as its efficiency improves and prices decline. Batteries now cost, on average, $156 per kilowatt hour, nearly 90% less than in 2010, and are expected to cost $100/kWh in 2023, according to BNEF. And global battery-making capacity is expected to more than treble by 2023, with two-thirds of the capacity in China alone.Besides batteries, there is another, widely used way to store solar and wind power. In pumped storage hydropower, water is pumped from one reservoir to another at a higher elevation, using solar or wind power when demand for electricity is low. Then during periods of high demand, water is released from the upper reservoir to lower reservoir through turbines as in traditional hydel power. These "water batteries" account for 94% of global energy storage capacity and had an installed capacity of 160 GW in 2018 (including 4.8 GW in India), according to the International Hydropower Association. Another 78 GW could be added by 2030.With these storage options, we are closer to fixing the problem of renewable energy being abundant when we do not need it and scarce when we do.This story is part of the 'Tech that can change your life in the next decade' package
As with newspapers, it is very hard to edit if you can't read," says George Church, a renowned geneticist at Harvard Medical School, about the genome. When the human genome was first sequenced in 2003, it had taken 13 years of work and cost nearly $3 billion. Since then, the cost has plummeted to as low as $600. And the time required for sequencing has shrunk to a few weeks. These changes have enabled the rapid rise of geneediting methods, particularly Crsipr (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats), this decade. A term often bandied about as a magic solution in a range of fields, Crispr was first found in bacteria. When a virus attacks a bacterium, the latter stores portions of the virus's genetic code within its genome. This helps it to recognise future viral attacks, and Crispr-linked enzymes called Cas9 disarm the virus by slicing its DNA. "We can probably recode the genome of any species to make it resistant to all viruses using 300 to 4,000 edits," says Church, a pioneer in Crispr research.Crispr can be used to fix genetic mutations in humans to treat rare diseases as well as to edit a plant's genome to increase yields or to make it more resistant to droughts. Some early studies are being done on Crispr's efficacy in treating certain cancers and sicklecell disease, an inherited blood disorder. While these studies have shown promise, it is too early to declare Crispr a success in these treatments. A new alternative to Crispr-Cas9, called prime editing, is said to be more precise in inserting DNA sequences. "The future is editing, but it is not yet clear exactly which kind of editing," notes Church.Crispr could also be the biggest leap in agriculture since genetically modified crops, and is being used to increase yields of rice, advance harvests of tomato, change the colour of carrots and make citrus fruits resistant to a particular disease. There are also ambitious efforts underway to eventually eliminate malaria by using Crispr to make mosquitoes resistant to the malaria parasite or to reduce female mosquito populations since only they are able to transmit malaria, leading to the extinction of the species. However, these advances in genetic editing are not without their ethical challenges.A Chinese scientist, He Jiankui, claimed last year that he had created the world's first gene-edited babies using Crispr, to make them resistant to HIV, although that could make them more vulnerable to other diseases. He invited condemnation from around the world and exposed the dangers of unregulated gene editing. There is no disputing the potential of geneediting techniques in curing diseases or transforming agriculture, but we have to resist the urge to play God.This story is part of the 'Tech that can change your life in the next decade' package
Looks like technology is triggering an orgasmic growth for the $30 billion sex-tech or human-machine intimacy industry. Leading the charge are sexbots or wire-attached, silicon-based artificial human beings, which are designed to be ideal companions in and out of bed.
