U.S. To Reveal Saudi Official Who Aided The 9/11 Attackers

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Daily Mail: U.S. WILL name Saudi citizen who 9/11 survivors and victims' families accuse of being a government official who helped the hijackers

* Survivors and victims of the 9/11 attacks have been suing to open up secrets on whether the Saudi government aided the hijackers
* 15 of the 19 mass murderers were Saudi and they were directed by Osama bin Laden, whose family is one of the kingdom's richest clans
* The lawsuit claims a Saudi government official assigned two men in California to assist two of the hijackers
* Attorney general William Barr will make the name available to lawyers for survivors and victims' relatives as well as to attorneys for the Saudi government
* The Saudis deny any involvement in the attacks and point to the findings of the 9/11 commission which said there was 'no evidence' of official involvement

The U.S. said Thursday that it will disclose the name of a Saudi citizen sought by lawyers for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks who want to link the kingdom to the terrorist plot.

Attorney General William Barr had the option of invoking a 'state secrets' privilege to withhold the release of the name, which lawyers for survivors and victims' relatives believe belongs to a Saudi government official who they say assigned two men in California to assist two of the hijackers.

Instead, Justice Department lawyers said in a court filing that the FBI will make the name available to a limited circle of people that includes lawyers for survivors and victims' relatives as well as to attorneys for the Saudi government.

Sputnik: Lavrov Says War in Syria Ended, Points Out Need to Overcome Crisis in Country

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that the war in Syria has come to an end and stressed the need to promote the long-lasting settlement of crisis both in the Arab republic and the whole Middle East region.

"The war in Syria has really come to an end. The country is gradually returning to a normal, peaceful life. Some hotspots of tensions remain in the territories that are not controlled by the Syrian government, such as Idlib and the eastern bank of the Euphrates," Lavrov said in an interview with the Trud newspaper.

The minister thinks that the most important goals on Syria now are providing humanitarian aid for civilians and "promoting the political process on settling the crisis to achieve stable and long-lasting stabilization of the situation in the country and the whole Middle East region."

An Analysis On Russian Munitions Dump Explosions

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 08:02 PM PDT

Strategy Page: Logistics: Blasts From The Past Just Keep On Coming

During early August Russia suffered three explosions caused by elderly or defective munitions. Two of the explosions took place at the same storage facility in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia. This remote area is literally in the middle of Russia, halfway between the Polish border and the Pacific Ocean to the east. This is an ideal place to store old ammo because Krasnoyarsk comprises about ten percent of Russia's land area and only two percent of the population. The easiest way in or out is the Trans-Siberian railroad.

The first explosion occurred at the Kamenka ammo depot on August 5th. This caused one death and at least ten injured. Some 16,000 civilians were forced to leave their homes to avoid the possibility of injury from shells being propelled by explosions into their communities. All these evacuees had to spend nearly a week at least 20 kilometers from the depot. Fortunately, the weather is comfortably warm this time of year. The rest of the year it is freezing or close to it.

Kremlin Orders Nationwide Raids Targeting Russian Opposition Activists

USA Today: Russian police raid opposition figures in 43 cities after Kremlin's big election losses

In simultaneous morning raids in 43 cities on Thursday, Russian security services descended on the homes and offices of supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny whose "Smart Voting" movement is credited with drastically reducing the number of pro-government members of the Moscow city council.

Police also searched the home of Sergei Boyko, a Navalny associate who came in second with nearly 20% of the vote in the mayoral election in Russia's third-largest city of Novosibirsk last Sunday.

More than 150 raids were carried out, from Vladivostok on the Pacific to Krasnodar in Russia's south, according to Navalny's close allies.

Police also targeted Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, which has worked to expose officials' questionable wealth, for what authorities said was an investigation of alleged money laundering.

Politico: Democrat subpoenas U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan to appear before panel

The chairman of a top House committee on Thursday subpoenaed the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan to testify before lawmakers next week after the State Department repeatedly failed to make the diplomat available.

The subpoena follows a collapse in peace negotiations between the Trump administration and the Afghan Taliban, and after President Donald Trump's move to scrap a secret meeting with the Islamist militia at Camp David.

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), who leads the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad needed to appear before Congress so lawmakers and the American people could"understand how this process went off the rails."

No one can forge lasting peace or win a war on the basis of bluff and bluster, or by ignoring the sheer facts on the ground. This, however, is how the United States is currently approaching the long running war in Afghanistan. Both those who argue for a quick peace deal and those who argue for continuing the war have chosen to ignore the grim realities that are actually shaping the course of the fighting and the challenges posed by one of the worst and least effective governments in the world.

Reuters: Trump favors 'whole deal' with China, two sides prepare for trade talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Thursday he preferred a comprehensive trade deal with China but did not rule out the possibility of an interim pact, even as he said an "easy" agreement would not be possible.

"I'd rather get the whole deal done," Trump told reporters at the White House. "I see a lot of analysts are saying an interim deal, meaning we'll do pieces of it, the easy ones first. But there's no easy or hard. There's a deal or there's not a deal. But it's something we would consider, I guess."

The president's remarks came as the world's two largest economies prepare for new rounds of talks aimed at curbing a more-than-year-long trade war that has hurt global economic growth and rattled financial markets.

McClatchy News: Trump grew weary of Bolton's push for military force against Venezuela

President Donald Trump ousted John Bolton in part due to frustration with his third national security adviser's guidance to pair military power with economic pressure against Venezuela, according to current and former administration officials.

One senior administration official said that Trump had grown weary of repeated vows from Bolton that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would be out of office in short order. A second official said that they had clashed over Bolton's efforts to advance planning for military intervention.

That official pointed to the administration's national security strategy, which predated Bolton's tenure and called for "strong diplomatic engagement" to isolate rogue nations in the Western Hemisphere. "That has been and remains the policy," the official told McClatchy, although officials across the administration insist that all options are on the table.

The 2020 election is still a long way off, but the nation's big banks are already pricing in the possibility of an Elizabeth Warren presidency, their senior executives tell me. The picture ain't pretty — for the banks or average Americans.

True, Warren isn't the Democrats' frontrunner, and a lot could happen in coming months. Because it's early, financial stocks haven't officially started to suffer. But the bank execs note that Warren is smart and driven, and they fear she may be starting to break out of the pack, where she can do some damage.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration has released $250 million in military aid for Ukraine, U.S. senators said on Thursday, after lawmakers from both parties expressed concern that the White House had held up money approved by Congress.

The money is intended for use by Ukraine in its struggle with pro-Russian separatists backed by Moscow. Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014.

Some Democrats had questioned whether the administration had withheld the money to put pressure on Ukraine's government to support Trump's re-election campaign by launching an investigation of one of Trump's main rivals in the 2020 U.S. election.

Democratic-Led U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Move Closer To Recommending The Impeachment Of President Trump

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 12:32 PM PDT

CNN: House panel approves impeachment inquiry parameters as Democrats try to clarify their strategy

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a resolution defining the rules of the panel's impeachment investigation, the first vote the committee has taken related to the potential impeachment of President Donald Trump.

The party-line vote came as House Democrats have struggled to define the committee's probe, with Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler saying the committee is conducting an impeachment inquiry, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders are refraining from calling it that.

Thursday's vote, which does not need to be approved by the full House, gives Nadler the ability to deem committee hearings as impeachment hearings. It allows staff to question witnesses at those hearings for an hour after members conclude, gives the President's lawyers the ability to respond in writing to public testimony and allows the committee to collect information in a closed setting.

Russian Mercenaries Are Working In Libya

Daily Beast: Russia's Wagner Mercenaries Have Moved Into Libya. Good Luck With That.

In emails revealing Moscow's efforts to groom incompetent aspiring leaders of the oil-rich war-torn country, the cynicism would be almost laughable, but the carnage is continuous.

Warlord Khalifa Haftar began an assault on Tripoli, the capital of Libya, last April. He had seized control of vast swathes of the country with the apparent backing of Russia, the UAE, France and Saudi Arabia, so the offensive by the self-declared field marshal of the "Libyan National Army" raised fears that the city might fall. But five months later, the warlord's forces are still fighting in the area and appear no closer to capturing Tripoli.

One group of people who will not be surprised by this turn of events is a team of shadowy Russian operatives working for an organization heavily implicated in the Kremlin's adventures from Ukraine to the Central African Republic, Venezuela, Syria, Sudan—and, not least, Vladimir Putin's covert efforts to influence the U.S. elections of 2016.

Politico: Israel accused of planting mysterious spy devices near the White House

The likely Israeli spying efforts were uncovered during the Trump presidency, several former top U.S. officials said.

The U.S. government concluded within the past two years that Israel was most likely behind the placement of cellphone surveillance devices that were found near the White House and other sensitive locations around Washington, according to three former senior U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter.

But unlike most other occasions when flagrant incidents of foreign spying have been discovered on American soil, the Trump administration did not rebuke the Israeli government, and there were no consequences for Israel's behavior, one of the former officials said.

It's not unusual for the French to comment on anything American and normally in the negative. What is rare is a Frenchman saying something positive about Americans; in this case heaping praise on our soldiers in Afghanistan.

Blogger and veteran Wes O'Donnell has translated an editorial in a French newspaper from a French soldier serving with a prestigious U.S. infantry battalion. I recommend reading the whole thing. Here are some excerpts:

he Pentagon is upping the official estimate on the number of U.S. troops in Iraq who were killed by Iranian-backed militias, now putting that number at at least 603.

Officials previously said that Iran was linked to the deaths of roughly 500 troops.

That means roughly one in every six American combat fatalities in Iraq were attributable to Iran.

The deaths are attributed to proxies sponsored by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — Iran's elite military force that protects the regime from internal and external threats.

Biometrics Is Making It Harder For Corruption To Flourish In Afghanistan

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 06:20 AM PDT

Strategy Page: Winning: Busted By Biometrics

n 2017, under pressure from foreign aid donors, the Afghan Army completed the distribution of ID cards using biometric data to everyone in the Afghan Army. It took longer to get the national police to accept biometric ID but by early 2019 that was accomplished. As a result, the number of personnel in the security forces fell to 272,000, the lowest since 2015. That was not a problem because that was a more accurate number than ever before. The new ID cards eliminated 10,000 soldiers who did not exist and 25,000 police. Foreign aid donors, mainly the U.S., had paid for those "ghosts" and their commanders took their pay. The police were the worst and one thing that got the police to accept the new ID cards was the exposure of police corruption. The Interior Ministry fired two of their police commanders after some of their subordinates posted a video where police provided details of how their commanders stole supplies including food. After the videos appeared the commanders forced the police who made it post another one denying the accusations. But the public uproar had already prompted an investigation that verified the theft allegations.

WNU Editor: I posted stories years ago that to battle the culture of corruption that exists in Afghanistan, technology (like biometrics) will need to be used. I am glad to see that they are finally implementing it. This tech will also make it more difficult for the Taliban to infiltrate the ranks.

Cuban Government Denounces The Closing Of Its Twitter Accounts

France 24: Cuba denounces suspension of official Twitter accounts

The Cuban government on Wednesday denounced the suspension of multiple official media Twitter accounts during a live TV address by President Miguel Diaz-Canel about the communist island's fuel shortage.

"Twitter suspended the accounts for Cuba's main media" while he spoke on the prime time Mesa Redonda show, the Cuban foreign ministry tweeted.

"In an obviously arranged operation, attempts were made to limit the pronouncements of the revolutionaries who support the truth," the ministry added.

WNU Editor: The Cuban government's denouncement is comical in view of how they control and limit access to the internet for its people, while also limiting or not permitting social media platforms to its users.

Bahamians Look for Loved Ones as 1,300 Remain Missing After Hurricane Dorian

Posted: 13 Sep 2019 12:24 AM PDT

(MCLEAN’S TOWN, Bahamas) — They scan social media, peer under rubble, or try to follow the smell of death in an attempt to find family and friends.

They search amid alarming reports that 1,300 people remain listed as missing nearly two weeks after Hurricane Dorian hit the northern Bahamas.

The government has cautioned that the list is preliminary and many could be staying in shelters and just haven’t been able to connect with loved ones. But fears are growing that many died when the Category 5 storm slammed into the archipelago’s northern region with winds in excess of 185 mph and severe flooding that toppled concrete walls, cracked trees in half and ripped swings off playgrounds as Dorian battered the area for a day and a half.

“If they were staying with me, they would’ve been safe,” Phil Thomas Sr. said as he leaned against the frame of his roofless home in the fishing village of McLean’s Town and looked into the distance.

The boat captain has not seen his 30-year-old son, his two grandsons or his granddaughter since the storm. They were all staying with his daughter-in-law, who was injured and taken to a hospital in the capital, Nassau, after the U.S. Coast Guard found her — but only her.

“People have been looking, but we don’t really come up with anything,” Thomas said, adding that he’s heard rumors that someone saw a boat belonging to his son, a marine pilot, though the vessel also hasn’t been found.

He especially misses his 8-year-old grandson: “He was my fishing partner. We were close.”

The loss weighs on Thomas, who said he tries to stay busy cleaning up his home so he doesn’t think about them.

“It’s one of those things. I’m heartbroken, but life goes on,” he said. “You pick up the pieces bit by bit. … I’ve got to rebuild a house. I’ve got three more kids. I’ve got to live for them until my time comes.”

Meanwhile, a cluster of heavy thunderstorms is heading toward the Bahamas and is expected to further drench the communities bashed by Dorian. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Thursday that the system was expected to become a tropical storm within 36 hours and would hit parts of the northwestern Bahamas with tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains.

In the Abaco islands, which Prime Minister Hubert Minnis says are mostly decimated, the search for loved ones is even more intense. Diego Carey, a 25-year-old from the hard-hit community of Marsh Harbor, left Abaco for the capital, Nassau, after Dorian hit but returned Thursday after a 12-hour boat ride to search for two friends who remain missing.

“We were together during the storm. It happened so fast. The roof just blew off,” he said, adding that was the last time he saw them. “It’s so traumatizing.”

At least 42 people died in Abaco and eight in Grand Bahama, and Minnis has warned that number will increase significantly.

He assured Bahamians in a recent televised address that the government was working hard to recover bodies and notify families, adding that officials are providing counseling amid reports of nightmares and psychological trauma.

“The grief is unbearable,” the prime minister said. “Many are in despair, wondering if their loved ones are still alive.”

Still, reunions, although few, are happening nearly two weeks after the storm made landfall Sept. 1.

The family of Trevon Laing had thought the 24-year-old man was dead after a police officer told them that two bodies had been found in the community of Gold Rock Creek, including that of a young man. His mother went into mourning for five days.

When his family visited the community to verify what they were told, Laing wasn’t around, buttressing their fears that he was dead. When he returned, he said, he found his brother crying on the front porch.

“I’m like: ‘Hey, I’m not dead! You guys have no faith in me. I’m a survivor,'” he said, adding with a laugh. “He was shocked and mad at the same time.”

Others who were reported missing and presumed dead were found in part thanks to the determination of people like Joyce Thomas, who did not stop searching for her brother, Bennett.

She traveled from Nassau to Freeport in Grand Bahama and then drove out to McLean’s Town, only to be forced to turn around because the street was still impassable. She tried again the next day and managed to reach the neighborhood where they grew up. There, she found only the foundation of his home. Her fear grew as she walked through the neighborhood.

Back in Nassau, she chastised their father for not doing enough to find his son.

“‘Go to NEMA, go to the police station,” she recalled telling him, referring to the islands’ National Emergency Management Agency. “Don’t just sit there. Do something.'”

“I wasn’t even eating until I heard my brother was OK,” Thomas said.

That came when she spotted him on a bicycle as she and her aunt drove again through McLean’s Town.

“I said, ‘Boy, come here! I miss you so much,'” Thomas told him as they clung to each other in a long hug. “I have other brothers, but this is my heart.”

Dominican Republic Announces New Safety Measures After Deaths of 11 American Tourists

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 09:38 PM PDT

Officials from the Dominican Republic gathered in New York City, along with the U.S. Ambassador, on Thursday to announce new safety measures months after 11 American tourists died in several resorts there last spring.

Javier Garcia, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, told reporters at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan that these new safety measures were put in place to specifically address safety at resorts that were at the center of the coverage.

The measures introduced include reinforcing mandates that require emergency information and the availability of 911 in every guest room, and a new emergency tourist center in Bávaro in Punta Cana, where multi-lingual specialists can communicate with tourists and their families.

The Ministry of Tourism also announced that it partnered with Ecolab, a United States-based water, hygiene and energy technology lab to provide training and certification to all Department of Tourism Services and Companies inspectors.

Garcia also announced that an additional 4,000 agents have been hired for both the tourist security agency and the national police, and that 3,000 more public security cameras have been installed.

U.S Ambassador to the Dominican Republican Robin Bernstein said that an “unfounded negative campaign” contributed to a “tourism crisis” on the island, and pointedly noted that the U.S. State Department has maintained a level-two advisory to the Dominican Republic — similar to that of countries including Spain, Denmark, and Belgium.

“American tourists should feel safe and secure,” she said. “I am totally comfortable with safety level, it is one of the safest tourist destinations I have ever visited. In fact, it has now become an even safer place to come because of the initiatives.”

Bernstein also specifically addressed reports that tainted alcohol led to the deaths, noting that if there were a problem with alcohol there would be far more reports of deaths.

“If it was alcohol people would be dropping like flies,” Bernstein said. “It is not alcohol.”

Earlier this year there were multiple high-profile cases involving American tourists who died while staying in the Dominican Republic. Seven deaths have been attributed to tourists becoming ill and dying of health-related issues. The FBI is still conducting toxicology tests in three specific cases and has not yet released the results.

According to the State Department, there has been no evidence of foul play and no sign that the deaths are connected.

Before the measures were announced, Garcia took the time to lambast the news media, saying the coverage of the deaths of the American tourists was overblown and aimed to damage the Dominican Republic’s stellar reputation as a “model” tourist country.

The State Dept. confirmed that in 2018, 13 U.S. citizens died while traveling to the Dominican Republic; the number was 17 in 2017. More than 2.7 million U.S. tourists visited the island in 2017, making the island the fourth-most popular travel destination for Americans.

Garcia later said “the damage is done” from the slew of reports that focused on the island, but that Dominican Republic officials are still committed to fixing their image, with their main focus now being on the truth.

According to InSight Crime’s 2018 Homicide Round-Up, statistics show that the Dominican Republic recorded 10.4 homicides per 100,000 people –– compared to 81.4 in Venezuela, 25 in Mexico and 11.7 in Costa Rica.

Bahamas Issues New Tropical Storm Warning as It Struggles to Recover From Hurricane Dorian

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 03:46 PM PDT

(HIGH ROCK, Bahamas) — The government of the Bahamas has issued a tropical storm warning for several of its northwestern islands, which are still reeling from Hurricane Dorian.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says a tropical cyclone is expected to form in the coming hours near the northwestern Bahamas. The system is emerging about 235 miles (380 kilometers) southeast of Great Abaco Island. The disturbance has maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph) and is moving to the northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).

Forecasters say the system could become a tropical storm within the next day or so. Heavy winds and rain are expected within the northwest Bahamas by late Friday, except for Andros Island.

The hurricane center says people on Florida’s east coast should monitor progress of the storm system.

Trump Is Making First Trip to Baltimore Since Calling It a ‘Rodent Infested Mess’

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 02:48 PM PDT

BALTIMORE (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday is making his first visit to Baltimore since describing it nearly two months ago as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live.”

Trump won’t be inspecting conditions in the city, though. Instead, he’ll be speaking to congressional Republicans attending an annual retreat in a hotel on the city’s waterfront. Protesters have gathered nearby. But inside, the president will find a friendly audience of legislators whose political futures are closely tied to how well he performs in next year’s election.

Police blocked off a wide perimeter around the hotel. But a few blocks away, demonstrators inflated a giant rat carrying a cell phone and adorned with yellow hair and a red tie to make clear their mocking intentions. Protesters waved signs with messages like “Trump and the GOP are the real rats,” and “Welcome rat king.”

The White House said the president has no plans to explore Baltimore beyond his speech, which was to focus on his accomplishments during his first two-plus years in office and priorities for the year ahead.

Trump in July laced into the city in a series of tweets critical of Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, who represents the majority-black 7th Congressional District in Baltimore and also chairs the House oversight panel conducting numerous investigations of the administration’s policies and work.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, asked whether the president should apologize for his Baltimore comments, responded that Trump “made a very good case why many major cities have challenges.” He said the president’s trip “symbolizes that, yes, he cares about Baltimore,” adding that Trump is working to give people in poverty “a better opportunity.”

The GOP retreat was scheduled for Baltimore before Trump got into his spat with Cummings.

After Trump’s verbal broadsides, Cummings invited the president to tour his congressional district with him, from the poorest parts of Baltimore to more well-to-do areas outside the city in suburban Baltimore and Howard counties.

Trump has not backed away from his charges that Democratic leaders are responsible for the ills of America’s biggest cities. But for now, he’s making the argument in a less personal and less hostile manner. He’s also trying to win over blacks and Hispanics by citing employment gains they have made during his tenure. It’s a staple of most of his speeches.

The unemployment rate for black Americans fell sharply to 5.5% in August, hitting its lowest level since record-keeping began in 1972. But the drop was driven primarily by a negative development: Fewer African Americans were either working or seeking jobs. The unemployment rate for Americans of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity stood at 4.2%.

Baltimore, a once-gilded American seaport, has undeniable drug and violent crime challenges. The city saw more than 300 homicides in 2018 for the fourth year in a row. It also contends with deep-rooted poverty and swaths of the city are populated with vacant, boarded-up homes.

‘Alert The House GOP.’ After an Artist Printed 62,000 Pages of Hillary Clinton’s Emails, She Showed Up at His Exhibition and Read Through Them

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 12:01 PM PDT

After an artist printed out 62,000 pages of Hillary Clinton’s emails as part of an art exhibition titled “HILLARY: The Hillary Clinton Emails” in Venice, Italy, the former Democratic presidential nominee showed up and spent an hour reading them. She even posed for a picture that she posted on Twitter Thursday morning, joking that someone should “alert the House GOP.”

The artist behind the show, Kenneth Goldsmith, downloaded and printed emails that were already publicly available on the internet — after the Clinton campaign and internal Democratic party email accounts were hacked — via WikiLeaks and the state department with the redactions intact.

Goldsmith, who teaches writing at The University of Pennsylvania, has created a makeshift White House in a historic Venice building that used to be an theatre hall. The space was converted into a supermarket in 2016 after being restored and renovated.

Heaps of documents sit on a replica of the desk in the Oval Office for the public to read through. They are pulled from the domain clintonemail.com between 2009 and 2013, per WikiLeaks, according to an online description from the curators.

The exhibition aims, its curators say, to show that “the pile of papers is rather unimpressive, rebutting Trump’s efforts to make them monumental.” And it’s also to examine how the case “”changed irrevocably” issues about privacy, transparency, propaganda and democracy in Western politics. Francesco Ragazzi, a curator of the exhibit, says the team behind the show wanted the art to center facts, instead of of “ideological narratives.”

“In this exhibit you can actually read all these emails by yourself,” Ragazzi tells TIME. “It’s an invitation to study, to research for the truth.”

Clinton flipped through copies of the documents for about an hour in a bizarre spectacle that the curators described as a “sort of vertigo.”

“The subject was in front of her portrait,” Francesco Urbano, a second curator of the exhibit tells TIME. They had no idea that Clinton would get involved, and had not formally invited her. She apparently found them after a friend visited the Italian exhibition and her staff later reached out. “At the beginning we were thinking it was a bad joke or something,” Ragazzi says. “We quickly realized everything was true when we saw the security services inside the supermarket on Tuesday.”

It was really her.

Clinton told Italian media after the visit that the show is “an artistic way of making the same point I made in the book I wrote.”

“It was and is still one of the strangest most absurd events in American political history. Anybody can go in and look at them. There’s nothing there,” Clinton said. “There’s nothing wrong. There’s nothing that should have been so controversial.”

Clinton has previously described her use of a private email server while serving as U.S. Secretary of States as “a very dumb mistake and an even dumber scandal.” She said former FBI director James Comey’s decision to announce he was examining newly-discovered emails of hers just 11 days before the presidential vote was “inexplicable.” After inspecting the emails, Comey said the FBI would not recommend charges against Clinton.

As Clinton’s visit to the Italian art show was unannounced, “I think everybody thought they were in front of a lookalike,” Ragazzi says. “Someone wrote to us on social media asking, did you hire a cosplay?”

The exhibit has been running at Despar Teatro Italia as part of the Venice Biennale since May 9 and should continue through November 24.

Asked whether President Donald Trump may be welcome to read the emails too, the curators said that they are ready to welcome him.

Children’s Art Answers the Question: What Will Earth Look Like in 30 Years?

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 11:56 AM PDT

“We humans need to do better.” That’s the sentiment Nahzeer Sandets, 12, shared in response to the question above. His drawing illustrates his bleak outlook on earth’s future, and he’s not alone—the environment, the fate of animals, and the perils to our planet consume the thoughts and imaginations of the next generation.

TIME for Kids, the weekly classroom edition produced by TIME editors, asked young students to draw their view of the planet 30 years from now. Their art, a sampling of which is shown below, depicts a full spectrum of childlike outrage, fear and optimism. And while their anxiety arcs through the art in the form of angry suns and barren land, they also pour their passion onto the page. And that passion gives us hope—in the future, the artists will be the people in charge. —Andrea Delbanco, editor-in-chief of TIME for Kids

A Sleepy Giant Seal Helped Foil an International Drug Smuggling Operation in Australia

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 10:30 AM PDT

Australian police have thwarted a billion-dollar international drug smuggling operation — reportedly with the help of a giant seal.

An international investigation into the drug gang reached its climax last week after an abandoned yacht was found on the shoreline of Stick Island, off the coast of Western Australia, sparking a search for its occupants.

“The fishing community of Geraldton played a significant role in this detection and seizure and maintained regular contact with police as this matter unfolded,” police said later in an incident report. “These people have helped protect Western Australia’s borders… and we are grateful for their efforts.”

As planes searched the area, two men were spotted attempting to hide among bushes on the nearby Burton Island. The men, Antione Dicenta, 51, and Graham Palmer, 34 — French and British nationals respectively — were allegedly trying to hide 40 bags containing more than a tonne of cocaine and ecstasy under seaweed. According to Australian media reports, the drugs’ street value is estimated at AUD$1 billion.

When police arrived on the island, Dicenta and Palmer tried to flee. But there was huge seal in their way, Damien Healy, a vice commander of the area’s volunteer marine rescue service told ABC radio.

“They woke it up and it jumped up with its big chest out and bellowed at them,” he added. “The guys basically had the choice of going through the seal or getting arrested and they ended up choosing to get arrested.”

The pair have since been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug. Three other men have also been charged for their involvement in the drugs operation. Australian police believe these men were nearby in another boat and “were ready to receive” the haul from Dicenta and Palmer, Western Australia’s police commissioner Chris Dawson explained. “We’ve disrupted a big international drug syndicate here,” Dawson said.

Mexico Says It Doesn’t Agree With ‘Astonishing’ U.S. Supreme Court Order Blocking Asylum

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 09:36 AM PDT

(MEXICO CITY) — Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Thursday that Mexico’s government doesn’t agree with an “astonishing” U.S. Supreme Court order that would block migrants from countries other than Mexico and Canada from applying for asylum at U.S. borders.

Speaking at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s daily news conference, Ebrard said that Mexico has a different policy when it comes to asylum seekers and would never implement such a rule.

“Our policy of refuge, of asylum is a tradition in Mexico,” he said.

“The United States has a very hardline immigration policy,” Ebrard continued. “The court’s decision is astonishing in the impact that it is going to have.”

Ebrard declined to explain that impact, saying that he had various meetings scheduled Thursday to try to evaluate what effects the court’s decision will have on Mexico. But the ruling is likely to drive more Central American migrants to try to illegally enter the U.S. with the help of smugglers or move them to apply for asylum in Mexico, which is already swamped with applications.

Mexico has long resisted a so-called safe third country agreement with the U.S. that would require migrants to request asylum there first, but the court’s decision appears to have unilaterally brought about the same result.

On Thursday, López Obrador said that he spoke by phone with President Donald Trump a day prior, noting the U.S. president recognized Mexico’s efforts and that relations between the two countries were very good.

He also said things were looking better for the ratification of a new free trade agreement between U.S., Mexico and Canada.

“There are no deep differences, there’s no discrepancy, nothing that could lead them to take measures or apply measures that affect the economy, the development of our country,” López Obrador said. “On the contrary, there’s a very favorable environment for the United States Congress… unbeatable conditions to approve the free trade treaty.”

His conciliatory approach contrasts sharply with a tack taken earlier this year by Trump, who tied immigration to economic policy by threatening crippling tariffs on all Mexican imports.

Following Trump’s threat, Mexico cracked down on migrants crossing the country, deployed the National Guard to the southern and northern borders, and tried to contain migrants to the southern part of the country.

It also accepted the expansion of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, under which the U.S. has sent thousands of asylum applicants back across the border to wait in Mexico.

Mexico announced Friday that it had reduced the flow of migrants arriving at its northern border by 56% in three months, and it has said that is beginning to invest in the Central American countries responsible for the majority of the migrants.

But leftist López Obrador’s increasingly hardline immigration policies have attracted criticism at home and abroad.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said this week she was concerned that immigration policies implemented in Mexico, the U.S. and some Central American countries “are putting migrants at heightened risk of human rights violations and abuses.”

Asked about her comments Thursday, Ebrard said Mexico also had concerns and had requested a meeting with her office to exchange information.

Hurricane Dorian Is Gone. But the Bahamas Still Faces a Big Risk From Infectious Disease

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 07:47 AM PDT

Hurricane Dorian’s 185 mph winds and punishingly slow pace smashed entire neighborhoods in the Bahamas, killing at least 50 people. But now, Bahamians are facing a different kind of threat. The lack of access to toilets, clean water and medications puts tens of thousands at risk for disease, public health experts warn.

Bahamians in the hardest-hit areas are already suffering from cuts and gashes caused by widespread debris and wreckage. But now aid groups are saying survivors are beginning to show signs of gastrointestinal issues from contaminated water. Those with chronic illnesses are struggling without access to treatment for chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. And if water that the storm dumped on the islands remains stagnant and untreated for long enough, it could become a breeding ground for mosquitos, giving rise to diseases like dengue, chikungunya and Zika.

“There’s a lot of downstream cascading effects people don’t think about,” Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, tells TIME.

Previous disasters in the Caribbean have brought infectious disease outbreaks that wreaked havoc after the initial disaster. Cholera killed thousands in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and and at least two dozen are believed to have died in Puerto Rico from a leptospirosis outbreak following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

What are aid groups seeing on the ground?

Heart to Heart International, a Kansas-based organization experienced in disaster relief, sent a team of about a dozen people, including eight medical professionals, to Abaco last week, where they have been working alongside the government in the town of Treasure Cay.

“The clinic doesn’t have a toilet. People don’t have toilets. They’re going to have to go to the bathroom somewhere. Food will get contaminated. Water will get contaminated. Hands will just pass things, even under the best of circumstances that happens,” says CEO Kim Carroll, who is in the U.S. but has been communicating regularly with her team in the Bahamas. The Heart to Heart team arrived on the islands “completely self-sufficient” so that they could “go in ready to handle their own waste,” she adds. The staff uses a bucket with a special trash bag that’s been treated with a product to help break down human waste — a method that most regular Bahamians do not have access to.

Many patients who have come to see them are dehydrated, Carroll tells TIME. Others have chronic conditions unrelated to the storm, including hypertension and diabetes. Untreated hypertension can lead to strokes, Carroll says. Diabetics are at risk, too. “If there are any type-1 diabetics there, if they haven’t had access to insulin by now, they’ve died, most often,” she says.

Dr. Rick Randolph, a chief medical officer for Heart to Heart working in the Bahamas, tells TIME the clinic has been seeing about 30 to 40 patients a day; many of them are low-income. “Disasters are the diseases of the poor,” he says. One diabetic patient had to be airlifted after he came in with a blood infection that crept into his leg. He had a puncture wound that became infected.

“A lot of the injuries we’ve seen are puncture wounds,” — caused by somebody stepping on and being cut by debris from the storm, Dan Neal, VP of operations at the medical humanitarian non profit, tells TIME. “You can’t move around piles of stuff like that and not get cut.”

Bryan Symonette, a 34-year-old crab fishing business owner, lost his shoes when Dorian ravaged the Bahamas. As Symonette traveled around the island to find supplies and care for his family, he was forced to walk over the feces and debris-strewn grounds barefoot, TIME previously reported. His feet were gashed and his toenails were falling off, he told TIME. Since then, Symonette got three stitches on his feet, which have now been removed. He also got a tetanus vaccination on Tuesday to prevent infection and says he is walking “comfortably now.”

Neal says Heart to Heart International has sent more than 1,000 doses of tetanus vaccines to the Bahamas.

“There are people who are going to get cuts and abrasions (…) and are then going to be wading in water, which has high levels of fecal bacteria because there’s usually a disruption in sanitation. All of those cuts and abrasions and lacerations have a high risk of getting infected,” Adalja says.

Neal says his team is now seeing an increase in patients with upper respiratory and gastrointestinal issues.

This is not a surprise. The upper respiratory issues are mostly likely directly related to hygiene, Neals explains, adding that any time people cannot wash their hands and are in close proximity to each other, the opportunity for a cold to move from one person to another “just goes up exponentially.” The lack of clean water available for hand-washing, bathing and food preparation can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Carroll’s team is one of several international groups responding to the hurricane.

Ciro Ugarte, director of health emergencies for the Pan American Health Organization, which serves as a regional office of the World Health Organization for the Americas, says the agency is working closely with the Bahamian government to respond to Hurricane Dorian and has already vetted and mobilized several international medical teams to Grand Bahama and the Abaco islands—which were hardest hit by Hurricane Dorian.

Ugarte tells TIME the agency’s priority is providing health services to Bahamians in need, especially those with chronic diseases. The second priority is ensuring water quality. “Water-borne diseases will happen, maybe not at the level of an epidemic, but these cases clearly will increase because of” the lack of availability of clean water, he adds.

Ugarte also noted that as of late Tuesday afternoon most health services and centers are fully operational, barring one hospital and four health centers.

What other diseases and infections could Bahamians face?

The biggest public health concerns in the Bahamas after Dorian will be related to the lack of sanitation, Adalja says.

The lack of access to clean water can also raise the risk for infections like leptospirosis, which can be found in the urine of rats and rodents. At least 26 people were killed in Puerto Rico from leptospirosis in the six months after Hurricane Maria hit, according to an investigation by CNN and the Center for Investigative Journalism.

Mosquito-borne diseases, like dengue, chikungunya and Zika, could also be risks after Dorian, according to Joseph Eisenberg, epidemiology professor at the University of Michigan. “If whatever infrastructure they had before to keep those mosquito populations down are no longer functioning that could result in the emergence or reemergence of these pathogens,” Eisenberg tells TIME. Mosquitos breed in small container water sources, which may be especially abundant in the Bahamas because a lot of debris won’t be cleaned up for quite a while, he explains.

But hurricanes as powerful as Dorian “can literally wipe out the entire mosquito population,” notes Tom Skinner, spokesman for the CDC. While it’s unlikely there will be large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in the immediate aftermath, there could be a risk, “months down the road when waters haven’t receded.”

Could the Bahamas face a cholera outbreak?

In response to rumors about cholera surfacing in Abaco, the Health Ministry and the Pan American Health Organization put out a joint statement last Saturday saying that no cholera cases had been detected “at the moment” and that there had not been “any increased number of infectious diseases due to the hurricane.” The statement continued: “Contrary to common belief, there is no evidence that corpses pose a significant risk of disease ‘epidemics.’ This is because most agents e.g., virus and bacteria do not survive long in the human body after death.”

They did note, however, that “floods can potentially increase the transmission of water-borne and communicable diseases.”

Bahama’s Health Minister Duane Sands blamed social media for creating confusion about a cholera outbreak. “There’s no such thing happening in Abaco. But once that is spread by social media, it goes like wildfire. The time we could be spending on actually helping people, we’re having to put out multiple fires,” Sands told the Miami Herald.

After a devastating earthquake shook Haiti in 2010, the region faced a cholera epidemic that killed more than 8,100 people and infected some 665,000. The United Nations later admitted playing a role in the initial outbreak. Investigations found that Nepalese peacekeepers had been staying at the U.N. camp and poor sanitation led to sewage from the camp contaminating the local water supply.

There have been no confirmed cases of cholera in Haiti since early February, according to Ugarte, with PAHO, who says that the chances of cholera surfacing in the Bahamas are “not probable.”

The issue with cholera in Haiti was “completely avoidable,” says Adalja, the Johns Hopkins infectious disease expert.

Eisenberg, the University of Michigan epidemiologist, says that the “dire” public health condition in Haiti after the earthquake allowed the cholera to spread. He cautions that Hurricane Dorian could create a similarly conducive environment for the disease if the government is not vigilant.

“In order for cholera to actually happen it just has to be introduced in some way,” he says. If cholera were introduced in the Bahamas last year, “it would have just fizzled.” But if it’s introduced this year after the hurricane, it “might not fizzle out,” Eisenberg says.

How are sanitation issues being addressed?

Craig Williams, an emergency response coordinator for Water Mission, a nonprofit headquartered in South Carolina, has been working with the Bahamian government to restore access to clean water to the town of Marsh Harbor in Abaco.

“If you don’t get water sorted out quickly it very fast becomes a health emergency,” Williams says. “It’s a race against time.”

Salt water has also infiltrated much of Bahama’s existing water supply. To fix this, Williams had been using a “fine-filtration” process called “reverse osmosis” that can separate the salt from the water.

Williams says walking through Abaco, he realizes that “generations of what’s been built up is now gone.”

“You see people’s lives torn apart because there’s half a house and in that house you can see someone’s head, you can see the bookshelf up against the wall that didn’t get blown away, you can see a kid’s toys and sadly sometimes you see the people who used to live in the house, too,” Williams says.

Paris Court Finds Saudi Princess Guilty in Beating Case

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 06:24 AM PDT

(PARIS) — A French court found the only daughter of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman guilty of complicity in violence Thursday for ordering her bodyguard to detain and strike a plumber for taking photos at the Saudi royal family’s apartment in Paris.

Princess Hessa bint Salman wasn’t present for the Paris court’s verdict and sentencing on multiple charges. The court gave her a 10-month suspended prison sentence and a 10,000-euro ($10,970) fine, tougher than the penalties prosecutors sought. The prosecution asked for a six-month suspended prison sentence and 5,000-euro fine.

The prosecution alleged the princess became enraged when she saw the plumber capturing her image at the royal residence near the Champs-Elysees, fearing the pictures could be used to harm her as the Saudi monarch’s daughter and the older half-sister of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

She left France shortly after the September 2016 incident, and was tried in absentia. The court found her guilty of sequestration and theft of the plumber’s telephone, as well as complicity in violence.

Her lawyer, Emmanuel Moyne, called the verdict “inexplicable” and said he would appeal.

The court also found the bodyguard, Rani Saida, guilty on charges of violence, sequestration and theft. He was in court for the verdict. His sentence matched what the prosecution requested: an 8-month suspended jail term and a 5,000-euro fine. Saida’s lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, said “there is no logic in the punishments” and he would decide on an appeal in coming days.

The French-Egyptian plumber’s lawyer, Georges Karouni, saluted client Ashraf Eid’s “courage” in bringing the case and said the verdict was proof of “everyone equal before the law.” Eid told Paris police the bodyguard tied him up at the princess’ bidding after he photographed a room so he could return furniture to its original layout once he finished his work.

“The princess noticed that her face was reflected in the bathroom and that she had been filmed. She called me a dog and called her bodyguard saying in Arabic, ‘This one, take his phone. He filmed me,'” Eid reported to police investigators.

Eid said the bodyguard broke his phone and made him kiss the Saudi princess’ feet while his hands were bound behind his back during the three-hour ordeal.

The presiding judge, quoting from prosecution evidence, said at the one-day trial in July that the princess told her bodyguard to disparage the workman, calling him a “dog who doesn’t deserve to live.”

About the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection

After nationalization of banks in India in 1969, Indian banks expected to extend their branch organizes the nation over with the goal that they were progressively available to their clients. The board requires the number of staffs yet enrollment through techniques, for example, publicizing were unsuitable. In this manner, the banks solicited the National Institute from Bank Management to plan a choice testing process for enlisting capable applicants. Also, subsequently, a little unit named Personnel Selection Services (PSS) was built up to deal with these sort of activities. A couple of years after the fact, in 1984, PSS was changed over into IBPS. IBPS presently works as an independent body that is primarily occupied with directing aggressive tests for enrollment to administrative and officials’ posts in the financial part.

Prior, competitors needed to compose various tests led by each bank for their opening. However, from 2012, the Recruitment procedure has been changed. Presently IBPS conducts five tests each year for banking part enrollment. Two degrees of the assessment is for trial officials, two for administrative levels and one for authority officials (horticultural, law, specialized).

M&M bets on a Netflix-style service for cars as slump bites harder

Posted:

MUMBAI: Mahindra and Mahindra on Thursday announced a tie-up with self-drive car rental company Revv to offer its passenger vehicles on a subscription model. This comes at a time when an increasing number of working professionals are preferring an asset-light lifestyle."With the changing era, the millennials want to experience brands in a different way with avoiding long-term commitment in terms of time or capital investment," said Veejay Nakra, chief of sales and marketing at Mahindra. The upfront cost of new vehicles has gone up sharply in the past years as it became mandatory to buy a three-year third-party insurance cover when purchasing new cars. Meanwhile, access to financing has become difficult too.Nakra said that while providing commitment-free ownership, the subscription model overcomes these challenges too as insurance cost is subsumed into the monthly fee and a customer's credit rating is not factored.Seven of the Mumbai-based carmaker's vehicles, including the XUV 300 and Marazzo, will be available for subscription through Revv's 'Open' model. Customers can subscribe to a car for a period of 12 to 48 months for a monthly fee which will be inclusive of insurance, road tax and routine maintenance costs. There is no down-payment, but customers will have to pay a safety deposit ranging between Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000 depending on the choice of vehicle, Nakra said. The tie-up is not an exclusive arrangement and vehicles from seven other manufacturers, including Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki, are already available for subscription through Revv. Upon getting an order, the company purchases a vehicle from manufacturers by making an upfront payment and then lends them to its subscribers, Nakra explained.Zoomcar, another car rental company, in which Mahindra is also a strategic investor, also offers Mahindra's vehicles on subscription through its ZAP Subscribe service. At Zoomcar, however, customers can also rent their vehicles to other people on days when they are not using them, thus partially offsetting their monthly fee.On its part, Mahindra has been offering its vehicles on a leasing model through its tie-ups with Orix and ALD Automotive for a year now and has sold close to 2,500 vehicles through this route, as per Nakra.Explaining the difference between leasing and subscription, Nakra said that the former is meant for people who want to rent a vehicle for a longer duration, usually three to four years, and who may consider purchasing the vehicle at the end of lease. Subscription is for users who want to rent cars for a shorter duration.Subscription cars are registered under a commercial license and sport a black registration plate with yellow letters, Nakra said, while cars under the leasing model come with a private registration and sport a white registration plate with black letters.

India's app economy is set to boom and how!

Posted:

NEW DELHI: India will overtake the US as the worlds largest developer population centre by 2024, says a report that sheds new light on how the app sector could be a potential source of jobs for India going forward.India has 1.6 million app economy jobs, as of August 2019, 39 per cent more than 1.2 million in 2016, said the report titled "The App Economy in India" by the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI).By comparison, the US had 2.246 million app economy jobs as of April 2019, and the European Union (plus Switzerland and Norway) had 2.093 million app economy jobs as of July 2019.At a discussion organised here on Thursday by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), Miachel Mandal from the PPI highlighted the key findings of the report. To estimate the number of core app economy jobs, the report used a multi-step procedure based on data from the universe of online job postings. To obtain a holistic picture, the report covers the top 5 states and territories for app jobs across India.Bengaluru is the leader with 362,000 app economy jobs followed by Delhi with 248,000 app economy jobs and Mumbai with 137,000 app economy jobs, said the report.Hyderabad with 128,000 app economy jobs and Pune with 113,000 app economy jobs complete the top five cities with the highest number of app economy-related jobs.

$800 bn: What BRI backlash may cost China

Posted:

By Iain MarlowA new report suggested the backlash to China's political and trade policies could shave as much as $800 billion off investment in President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road Initiative, amid mounting concerns about the geopolitical price of doing business with Beijing. The report published Wednesday from consultancy Silk Road Associates and law firm Baker McKenzie outlined five scenarios for future BRI investment. The most optimistic is a "global cooperation model" that sees China spending more than $1.3 trillion globally between 2020 and 2030. The most pessimistic is "uni-polar" and weighs the impact of a recession, growing nationalism and more aggressive competition, predicting investment might only reach around $560 billion. The report's release came as Hong Kong kicked off a Belt and Road investment summit Wednesday attended by several Chinese officials, one of whom urged the city's residents to stop protesting and seize the opportunities offered through China's regional infrastructure spending plans. The Asian financial hub has seen months of unrest that have taken a toll on its economy, including tourism and retail. With more than 130 countries reported to have signed up to the initiative, estimates for China's current BRI investments vary wildly -- from hundreds of billions of dollars to as much as $8 trillion. The World Bank has suggested China's current spending totals around $575 billion, but predicting future investments by Xi's notoriously opaque government over a decade is difficult. Political opposition to projects in Sri Lanka and Malaysia, among other countries, has led to some projects being revised, curtailed or canceled, making investments even more difficult to track. The Asian Development Bank has previously estimated developing countries in Asia need around $26 trillion worth of infrastructure investments between 2016 and 2030.These are the five scenarios outlined in the report:Value: $910 billion. Investments stay on the current trajectory and track closely with the current trend of more projects, but smaller average values.Value: $1.32 trillion. China learns its lessons, reduces political opposition to big infrastructure projects, and negotiates more multilateral funding sources.Value: $1.2 trillion. A focus on sustainability helps secure new funding sources and helps Chinese firms win major clean energy and water projectsValue: $1.06 trillion. U.S.-China trade tensions persist, leading to a greater exodus from China. Relocated manufacturing centers in Southeast Asia spur Chinese infrastructure investments there.Value: $560 billion. Political opposition and trade protectionism limit the size and geographic spread of China's infrastructure investments.

GST Council may lower levies on auto, biscuits

Posted:

NEW DELHI: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council could lower levies for sectors such as automobiles, biscuits and other fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) at its September 20 meeting, said people with knowledge of the matter. It could also discuss raising the lowest slab of 5% to as much as 8%. That could set the ball rolling for a major revamp of GST structure as part of efforts to revive growth, they said."These proposals will be placed before the council," said a senior government official aware of the matter. The fitment committee, comprising state and central government officials, which met last week only discussed the possible revenue impact of a rate cut on automobiles. The GST Council, which meets in Goa next week, will take a final call on the matter. The automobile sector wants GST rates on passenger vehicles to be cut to 18% from 28% now. The auto sector, in addition to GST, also faces a compensation cess that ranges from 1% to 22%. Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has backed calls for lower GST on hybrid and other vehicles. 71104884 GST Mopup SubduedParle, Britannia and other biscuit makers have pitched for a reduction in GST from 18% to 12% to bring them on par with unbranded varieties.Auto sales fell 23.55% in August with dispatches in all segments, including passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, continuing to plummet. The government has been called upon to provide some stimulus in the form of tax cuts to boost consumption and prevent any further deepening of the slowdown.States may have to share some of the revenue loss that would accrue due to any cut in GST on automobiles.Alternatively, other avenues of generating revenue such as restructuring of the 5% slab or raising the slab rate may have to be examined. Some state governments have backed merging the 12% and 18% brackets as part of broader reform. The revenue position could prompt an early call on the matter. The Centre is facing pressure as GST collections remain subdued and states have to be compensated in full for any revenue loss, calculated at 14% growth, for five years. GST collections rose 4.51% in August to Rs 98,202 crore, staying below the Rs 1lakh crore target.Sources said the compensation cess for June and July was about Rs 28,000 crore and if the remaining three installments are of the same order, it will add up to an additional Rs 84,000 crore for the year. However, the amount expected to be collected in the remaining period based on revenue in the past five months is Rs 58,200 crore. Taking into account the unutilised cess amount of Rs 23,400 crore, the amount available would be Rs 81,600 crore."Any further shortfall in the revenue will further increase the gap between the amount available for release of compensation and amount of compensation required to be released," said the person cited above. The cess is aimed at compensating states with a large manufacturing presence that lost out when GST was introduced as the latter is a consumption levy. The cess so collected is distributed among such states.

Maruti Suzuki may retain diesel cars

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) may not completely phase out diesel passenger vehicles post implementation of stricter Bharat Stage VI emission norms, top officials informed ETAuto. The country's largest carmaker, which gets over 20% of total sales from diesel cars, earlier announced plans to phase out diesel cars after BS-VI implementation in April 2020 due to cost implementation.Maruti Suzuki will be giving five year extended warranty on small diesel cars to bring confidence in the market. The company has also announced that Brezza and S-Cross will have a BS-VI petrol vehicle very shortly, by the end of this year."What we had announced was that for smaller diesels, we will move out of the same. Because to convert a BS-IV vehicle to BS-VI vehicle in diesel is expensive. So already the difference between a diesel car and petrol car about a lakh and ten or twenty thousand and you add another big cost to it then the gap becomes so large that the consumer in smaller car at least which is more price sensitive, they'll probably reject it," said Shashank Srivastava, executive director, Maruti Suzuki India. However, in the larger diesels, the company still have options open."We are going to study the reaction of consumer because those vehicles will also come at a higher cost. So we have to study the consumer reaction and then we will decide what is to be done regarding BS-VI for larger diesels," he said.CV Raman, senior executive engineering, Maruti Suzuki India, in an exclusive interview, also said the company will look at 1.5 litre diesel engine in future. Currently 1.5 L diesel engine powers company's Ciza and Ertiga models."We have done about 30% of that work (completing transition), which constitutes 50% of the volume. So now we will start the balance work in the next couple of months, you will see in the next three months all the other vehicles also become BS-VI," Raman said."Typically our understanding is that for BS-IV petrol to diesel, price point difference is Rs 1 lakh. It may go up in a small car to Rs 1.75 lakh or Rs 2 lakh in case of BS-VI," he said.Changing market dynamicsThe carmaker sees a major change in the market dynamics with BS-VI implementation as it will tilt more towards bigger cars and small cars may see a decline. "In the market, there is going to be definitely a shift. Today you see petrol to diesel, the price difference is maybe Rs 8-Rs 9 in the market. Even though the fuel efficiency is higher in a diesel engine by about 20-25%. The acquisition cost being higher, so small car segment will see a decline in the diesel," said Raman."We feel all small cars should be converted to CNG going forward." Diesel penetration among passenger vehicles is likely to come down to 15-20% after BS-VI implementation.

Despite widening slowdown,Voltas eyes 20% volume jump

Posted:

MUMBAI: Undeterred by the deepening economic slump, seen most acutely in the auto and FMCG sectors, air-conditioner maker Voltas is eyeing a 20 percent volume growth this fiscal year. The Tata Group company, which sold 1.25 million in FY19, is expecting volume to touch 1.5 million units by March."We have set a target of 3.5 million by 2025. For this fiscal, we are confident of reaching 1.5 million units," managing director and chief executive Pradeep Bakshi told reporters here Tuesday. When asked if the overall slowdown could hamper their plans, he said, "AC penetration is barely 3-4 percent in the country. Despite the slowdown, AC demand in fact grew this year so far, thanks to the unprecedented heat-wave this year."Bakshi also expects the ongoing festive season to drive demand.Meanwhile, Voltas has partnered with group firm Tata Power to promote energy efficient ACs. Under this, Tata Power consumers in the city can exchange their ACs for Voltas' 5- star-rated inverter split ACs. Also, it is offering up to 50 percent discount on 5-star-rated ACs till December 31, Tata Power chief executive Praveer Sinha said.Meanwhile, Tata Power tied up with Microsoft's mobile app service Kaizala to offer a special service to its customers in Mumbai. The app will enable Tata Power to connect and coordinate work with the entire value chain, including field employees, vendors, partners, and customers. Consumers will be able to pay electricity bills using this Kaizala app, said Microsoft India chief operating officer Meetul Patel.

View: Go for buy on dips strategy in gold, avoid panic selling

Posted:

China announced that they will hold talks with the US this October. This is not new. It's a vicious circle with the US administration being tough on China and slapping tariffs. Then stock markets fall on trade war fears. Then both US-China hints at resolution through a meeting or phone calls. Market rallies on news and no progress is made. This has been ongoing and we are in the cycle where the market is rallying on hopes of some solution. Risk-on mode once again has come, so we are seeing gold-silver sell off and equity markets rallying.Gold saw a fall of nearly $30 (largest single-day decline in nearly three years) on the news of trade talk resumption and good US economic data. The correction was overdue as we have seen nonstop rally from $1,436 to $1,555 levels. The support for gold comes around $1,490, which is 50 per cent retracement from $1,414 to $1,555. 71100876 The trend still remains positive, as gold is trading above its trendline and a breach below $1,475 can make gold investors worried. Silver has taken the hit more severely as it lost nearly 85 cents on that day. 71100882 Next year there is US elections. So chances are that Donald Trump might go for some trade deal before heading into elections. If US-China trade war extends till next year, then recession is confirmed. Already trade war has been reeling all countries into a slowdown. But we doubt that resolution will be reached next month or even this year. Every failed trade deal has resulted in a rally in precious metals. This year should be no different. The US Fed rate cuts will also give enough fuel to gold to cross level of $1,594 on the upside. We believe stock market rally will run out of steam within a matter of days and precious metals will bounce much higher by the year end.Global growth is slowing and world's PMI is showing contraction i.e. trading below 50 levels. Consumer sentiment is at a three-year low. The central banks have no choice but to cut rates and start bond buying to keep markets afloat. So looking at the big picture, any short-term positive news such as the start of trade talks or one or two positive economic data will not change the economic outlook.Investors should refrain from panic selling and use the opportunity to increase exposure at a discounted price. We are not suggesting go all in at current point, but start increasing exposure at every dips.(Investors are advised to consult financial advisers before taking an investment calls based on these observations)

Call & Put writing shows limited upside & downside for Nifty50

Posted:

By Chandan TapariaNifty50 opened positive and headed towards the 11,080 mark in Thursday's trade but failed to hold the gains and drifted towards 10,965 mark. It negated the formation of higher lows of last four sessions and formed an Outside Bar. It recently witnessed a 330-point recovery from 10,750 level to 11,080 level in six sessions but needs to surpass multiple hurdles at 11,111 and 11,141 levels to witness a bullish momentum. Else, the index may again get stuck in a broader trading range. Now, the index has to cross and hold above the 11,000-11,050 zone to witness an upward move towards 11,111 and then 11,141 levels while a failure to move above it can cause it to drift below 10,950 and take it to the 10,880-10,850 zone.On the options front, maximum Put open interest was at 10,800 followed by 11,000 levels, while maximum Call OI was at 11,000 followed by 11,200 and 11,500 levels. There was Call and Put writing at all immediate strike prices which suggests limited upside as well as downside for the market. Options data suggested a trading range between 10,800 and 11,200 levels.India VIX fell 3.06 per cent to 14.90 level. It has been making lower highs and lows for last five sessions and recently corrected from 18.31 to 14.60 level, providing some stability to the market.Bank Nifty has been forming higher highs and lows for last five sessions and supports are shifting higher. It witnessed profit booking from higher levels but formed a Spinning Top on the daily scale. Now it has to hold above 27,500 to witness a further move towards 28,100 and then 28,300- 28,500 zone while medium-term supports shifted to 27,250 level.Nifty futures closed negative at 10,990 level with a loss of 0.63 per cent. Long buildup was seen in IndiGo, Tata Power, Castrol, Raymond and Hindalco while shorts were seen in Apollo Hospitals, CESC, UBL, GAIL and Mindtree, among others.(Chandan Taparia is Technical & Derivative Analyst at MOFSL. Premji praised the IISc for its role in the company's diversification into the IT business back in 1979.The 74-year-old IT mogul said, when Wipro approached the newly set-up Centre for Scientific and Industry Consultancy at IISc back then, the institute formed a committee to advise the company."The institute constituted a committee to advise us on what computer we should make. This consulting project involved surveying literature on the computers being made all over the world. And, it was also a platform for technical discussions, conceptualization and design review between Wipro's R&D team and IISc. It was here that we began to think about what chips, bus and microprocessor should be used in the first Wipro computer," said Premji.
