As always, Apple's livestreaming the big event on its website via Safari, Chrome, and Firefox browsers, as well as on Apple TV. And now for the first time ever, the event will also stream live on YouTube.
The "special event" will be broadcast on Apple's YouTube channel starting at 10:00 a.m. PT (1:00 p.m. ET) at this link here.
As the No. 2 search engine after Google, it doesn't make sense for Apple to not livestream its event on YouTube, where everyone watches video and expects to find it. Read more...
The IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin is always a wonderful display of what technology can do for you today. From smartphones and gigantic TVs to air purifiers and intelligent stoves, IFA has it all — and it always pains me that I just don't have time to examine every nook and cranny of its labyrinthine halls.
This year was a bit unusual, with Samsung re-launching an improved version of its first-ever foldable phone, Huawei keeping mum on the subject of phones, and iPhone fever threatening to take over all the buzz (IFA is typically removed from Apple's iPhone event by at least a week or two; in 2019, Apple will show its new phones a day after IFA closes). At least, that's what naysayers have been claiming for much of the author's decades-long career. Over the years, displeased fans have demanded rewrites, screen adaptors have substituted their own conclusions in lieu of King's, and literary snobs with axes to grind have griped that horror's most renowned writer isn't "all that good."
In a recent article from the Telegraph, critic Jake Kerridge went so far as to claim King doesn't particularly care about crafting perfect finales — citing lines from King's memoir On Writing as proof of a steadfast storytelling philosophy that fans should learn to (lovingly) accept as part of the King canon. Facebook has a major loophole that allows nefarious users to get around its strategy to stop fake news.
The social media giant has been taking its fight against misinformation and fake news more seriously in recent years. The company has taken action against malicious accounts spreading disinformation. Its updated its policies to keep misinformation off the platform. Studies have even shown that the steps Facebook has taken are working. That’s all good news!
However, a recently discovered loophole proves that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the rest of his company still have a lot more work to do. Read more...

Coming out of The Lighthouse feels like waking from a fitful sleep filled with dreams that feel somehow significant, even if you're not sure what they mean or how they all fit together.
The opening premise is simple: Sometime in the late 19th century, two men, Tom (Willem Dafoe) and Ephraim (Robert Pattinson) arrive at a tiny island off the coast of New England to tend to the lighthouse there for the next four weeks.
What happens next, though, is much harder to explain. Suffice it to say the men descend into madness. Whether it's a product of their circumstances (boredom, booze, extreme isolation) or more supernatural causes remains in question. Read more...

TL;DR: Vizio is having a massive internet-wide sale with P-Series and M-Series 4K TVs up to $1,000 off at Walmart, Best Buy, and more.
TV news is all 8K TVs this, rollable TVs that. But let's rationalize a bit — how many people are actually shopping for a TV that costs as much as a car?
While the rest of the market is wrapped up in CES reveals, Vizio has been focused on an at-home 4K experience that people can actually afford — and they nailed it. Vizio's line of Quantum TVs have garnered top ranks across the internet: PCMag praised the M-Series for its affordable HDR and Gizmodo confirmed that the P-Series is the "best deal for a TV" you can get right now. Pocket knives: They're not just for taking camping (although you should take them camping). Most knives probably won't save you in a bear attack because you'll be running the other direction, but they will help you cut rope, break up kindling for a fire, open a can of beans, whittle a spear, and all sorts of other cool woodsy things that may prove vital to your survival.
If you're an indoor cat, you can still use these knives to cut avocados. Either way, they're on sale and who doesn't love a good sale?
This chubby little knife has a tanto blade and is wider than the average pocket knife. That stocky build makes it more durable and tougher in situations that require more significant blunt force. Despite its durability and thickness, it's still only 3.7-inches long so you can easily carry it in your pocket. Right now, you can get it for 41% off $59.99 at just $35. Read more...

Are you surprised Lifetime already has a made-for-the-network movie about the college admissions scandal aka Operation Varsity Blues?
It's called The College Admissions Scandal (ha)and it follows the story of the 50 people accused of paying their children's ways into the nation's elite colleges and universities.
Like the news coverage surrounding the scandal, The College Admissions Scandal focuses on the scamming of two prominent women, portrayed by Penelope Ann Miller and Mia Kirshner. Although neither of the lead female roles are explicitly named Felicity Huffman or Lori Loughlin, Michael Shanks portrays the corrupt college admissions consultant, Rick Singer, directly. If there's anything worse than picking an easy-to-hack password, it's being assigned a default easy-to-hack password for your GPS tracker. And, yet, that's what reportedly happened to at least a half million people.
A report from cybersecurity firm Avast, as reported by The Next Web, found that 29 models of trackers made by Chinese company Shenzhen i365 Tech had vulnerabilities that may have exposed the data of more than 600,000 users.
Each account was assigned an ID number and default password, which just happened to be "123456." For more than 100,000 users, the exposed data included real-time location information. The report also claimed that design flaws in the trackers allowed "third-parties to 'spoof' (or fake) the user’s location, or access the microphone for eavesdropping." Read more...
For almost over a week, all eyes have been focused on the Bahamas, and rightly so.
Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane when it made contact with the islands, has caused a staggering amount of suffering and devastation.
The slow-moving nature of Dorian allowed the tropical cyclone to inflict catastrophic damage as it crept over the northern Bahamas and eventually stalled directly on top of Grand Bahama Island for 24 hours on Monday.
Thirty people have died in the Bahamas, and that number is expected to rise.
Images of the hurricane and its aftermath show destroyed homes and flooded streets.
If you’re excited about the release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 but aren’t quite ready to drop the cash needed to acquire one, the Galaxy Tab S4 went on sale just in time (and it comes with the S Pen, too).
That’s not the only good sale happening this weekend though, there are a bunch of other great deals on laptops and tablets out there — and we did you favor of finding all the best ones. You’re welcome!
This assertion comes with LG's 8K TV now being available for sale and Samsung's 8K TV hitting stores in October. Sure, you can expect they'd be pricier than we're used to — but if 8K is simply double the pixel resolution of 4K, you'd probably assume that 8K TVs are also just double the price.
Oh, sweetie, no. LG's 8K TV is going for an inconceivable $42,000. That's the same price as a brand new Audi 3.
Fortunately, Mashable's Stan Schroeder says that you absolutely don't need one. A 4K TV can give your living room just as noticeable of a glow up while costing a fraction of the price. This week, our hands-down favorite deal comes in the form of $1,300 off this 75-inch Vizio P-Series Quantum X TV. Read more...

When President Trump tweeted classified satellite photos, it startled the intelligence community—and revealed the capabilities of the U.S. spy satellite network.
Spy satellites have been with us since the dawn of the Space Age. In fact, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), which maintains a database of operational satellites, says that as of March, there were more than 2,000 of the devices in Earth orbit, 176 of which were operated by the U.S. military. (In total, roughly 5,000 satellites are in orbit, most no longer operational.) It's a good bet that many of those are loaded down with cameras and other sensors used to keep tabs on adversaries.
But while we've known about these high-flying cameras for decades, and indeed seen them crop up with usually exaggerated capabilities in spy films, their true powers have been closely guarded secrets. At least, that is, until President Donald Trump on Friday appeared to tweet out an image of an exploded rocket launch facility in Iran taken by a U.S. spy satellite, an image that showed just how good U.S. hardware is at securing crisp, high-resolution images.
WASHINGTON ― The United States' B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb may face an 18 month delay during production, with the W88 submarine-launched ballistic missile warhead facing a shorter delay, a top National Nuclear Security Administration official confirmed Wednesday.
The B61-12 life-extension program consolidates and replaces the older B61-3, -4, -7 and -10 variants, while the W88 Alteration 370 is meant to replace the arming, fuzing and firing subsystem for the W88 warhead for the Trident II sub-launched ballistic missile. The two are among five major modernization programs underway at the agency.
Both had been due for production in 2020, but neither will have their first production units delivered on time, according to Charles Verdon, the National Nuclear Security Administration's deputy administrator for defense programs. NNSA is working with the Defense Department to minimize the delays, but Congress has been informed both will be ready "roughly around the same time," Verdon said at the at the 2019 Defense News Conference.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - Satellite images appear to show the once-detained Iranian oil tanker Adrian Darya-1 near the Syrian port of Tartus, despite U.S. efforts to seize the vessel.
Images obtained by The Associated Press early Saturday from Maxar Technologies showed the vessel there.
Iranian officials haven't acknowledged the ship went to Syria. The ship turned off its Automatic Identification System late Monday.
The new images matched a black-and-white image earlier tweeted by John Bolton, the U.S. national security adviser.
The impacts of Dorian on Canada could be quite catastrophic as weather models show the storm expanding in size and remaining quite intense. While it will take on extra-tropical characteristics, the winds will be just as damaging.

China says it has developed a new hunter drone that can disable other drones -- or even small aircraft -- by firing a 16-square-meter (172 square feet) web at them.
"Caught by the web, the hostile drone should lose power and fall to ground," said a report on the Chinese military's English-language website.
Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, the drone can work alone but also can integrate with China's defense system for small, slow and low-flying targets, according to the report.
The hexacopter drone can also perform surveillance and reconnaissance, it said.
Undoubtedly, America has the most active and powerful military in the world. At a whopping $649 billion, the United States is still the biggest global spender on its military. It spent almost as much on its military in 2018 as the next eight largest-spending countries combined.
The top five biggest spenders in 2018 were the U.S., China, Saudi Arabia, India, and France., which together accounted for 60% of global military spending.
But the United States wasn't always on top — the data below shows how military spending is distributed around the world and who are the most influential players. From 1914 to 1990 military spending is calculated in US$ in 2000 terms.
MOSCOW -- Five years in prison for a tweet; four for repeatedly protesting; three for using pepper spray; two for pulling a policeman's arm.
Those are just a few of the sentences imposed against Russians who took part in the protest wave that has rocked the country's capital since July, galvanizing the embattled opposition in ways not seen since the run-up to Vladimir Putin's election to a third presidential term in 2012.
A summer of discontent in Russia's capital culminates this weekend with a vote that might have gone unnoticed even by many Muscovites if not for the exclusion of a slew of independent candidates from the ballot by electoral officials. Instead, anger over that decision led to large rallies that have shone a spotlight on growing public disaffection less than 18 months into what could be Putin's final Kremlin term.

If you're a soldier, you'd better just call them ma'am and salute.
Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett and younger sister Brig. Gen. Paula Lodi are each accomplished in their own fields. But together they have become the first two sisters, the Army believes, to attain the general's rank in the service's 244-year history.

"However, this comes as no surprise to those who have known them and loved them throughout this extraordinary journey. This is a proud moment for their families and for the Army."

The top admiral in charge of Naval Special Warfare has fired the entire leadership team of SEAL Team 7 over a "breakdown of good order and discipline," a spokeswoman for Naval Special Warfare Command told Task & Purpose on Friday.
Cmdr. Edward Mason, the commanding officer of ST7; Lt. Cmdr. Luke Im, the executive officer; and Command Master Chief Hugh Spangler were all relieved of their leadership posts on Friday, said Cmdr. Tamara Lawrence.
The relief was carried out by Rear Adm. Collin Green, the commanding officer of NSW. Lawrence said their relief was "due to a loss of confidence that resulted from leadership failures that caused a breakdown of good order and discipline within two subordinate units while deployed to combat zones."
The spokeswoman declined to name who would take their place, citing operational security concerns for those SEALs and their families.
HARARE (Reuters) - When Robert Mugabe was deposed as Zimbabwe's president in 2017, Karen Sundirai was convinced the country would quickly recover from years of economic turmoil and authoritarian rule.
Nearly two years later, the 36-year-old bank teller speaks of dashed hopes and expresses reverence for Mugabe, who died on Friday aged 95.
The country, now led by Mugabe's long-serving security chief Emmerson Mnangagwa, is grappling with its worst economic crisis in a decade, marked by unemployment above 80%, acute shortages of foreign currency and fuel, and rolling power cuts lasting up to 18 hours a day.
"They said it was a new era but now we know it was an error ... Things are worse under Mnangagwa," Sundirai told Reuters while queuing to buy food at a supermarket in central Harare.

MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (Reuters) - The smell of death hung over parts of Great Abaco Island in the northern Bahamas on Friday, as relief workers sifted through the debris of shattered homes and buildings in a search expected to dramatically drive up the death toll from Hurricane Dorian.
Dorian, the most powerful hurricane on record to hit the Bahamas, swept through the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island earlier this week, leveling entire neighborhoods and knocking out key infrastructure, including airport landing strips and a hospital.
The United States, Britain and China announced the commitment of funds and goods to help hurricane-devastated Bahamas.
U.S. military and civilian emergency teams from the United States have been sent to the Bahamas, where tens of thousands of people need food and supplies after Hurricane Dorian struck the nation of the tens of thousands of residents on the small islands.
The White House has encouraged donations through the Center for International Disaster Information website.
The U.S. Coast Guard said on Friday morning that it has rescued 205 people in the Bahamas since the start of the hurricane, conducting air operations from Andros Island, Bahamas, with seven MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and five MH-65 Dolphin helicopters.
The Turkish president has vowed to unblock what was once considered the main gateway for refugees seeking sanctuary in Europe. Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded the US and the EU create a safe zone in northern Syria.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday threatened to reopen a route for Syrian refugees to reach Europe if it does not receive more support for a a resettlement plan centered on northern Syria.
Erdogan has urged the US to take further action on establishing a so-called safe zone in northeast Syria, where Washington has a military presence in support of a Kurdish-led force fighting the "Islamic State" militant group.
"This either happens or otherwise we will have to open the gates," said Erdogan. "Either you will provide support, or excuse us, but we are not going to carry this weight alone. We have not been able to get help from the international community, namely the European Union."
The cancellation of the trip is reportedly due to President Ashraf Ghani's (right) opposition to the plan proposed by U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad (left).
KABUL -- Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has postponed a planned visit to Washington during which he was to discuss the U.S.-Taliban talks aimed at ending the nearly 18-year war in Afghanistan, officials say.
An Afghan cabinet minister who asked not to be named told RFE/RL on September 6 that the trip was delayed "by the U.S. government because of Mr. Ghani's opposition" to the text of a draft peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban.
Tolo News quoted sources familiar with Ghani's planned trip as also saying the visit had been postponed.
The report said the president was originally due to travel to Washington on September 7 with a delegation for talks with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, on September 9.
Sept 5 (Reuters) - Senior U.S. and Chinese officials have pledged to meet in October to settle their ongoing trade war but a lasting peace seems more elusive than ever.
Since trade negotiations between the world's largest economies broke down in May, both countries have added tariffs on billions of dollars of the others' goods, broken good faith promises and traded public insults.
Washington accused Beijing of reneging on commitments to change its laws to enact economic reforms, while Beijing called U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff's "barbaric." Leaders from both countries are now vowing a long fight, despite slowing domestic economies.
* Government has deployed extra security to Bahamas northern islands amid reports of looting and violence * Corpses have piled up and officials have ordered in hundreds of body bags, and freezers, to store the dead * Officials are now evacuating people to capital in Nassau but efforts are hampered by flooded airport runways * Up to 70,000 in need of 'life-saving assistance' while health minister has warned of a 'staggering' death toll * Dorian struck the Bahamas as a catastrophic Category 5 storm on Sunday, unleashing deadly 185mph winds * Half of Bahamas homes destroyed or severely damaged, with $7bn in insured and uninsured property losses
The death toll from devastating Hurricane Dorian will be 'staggering' with thousands still missing, officials have warned amid reports looters are 'trying to shoot people' in the scramble for food and water.
Up to 70,000 are in need of 'life-saving assistance' while Great Abaco is said to be virtually uninhabitable, with bodies piled up and witnesses say there is a 'smell of death' with corpses floating in the water.
While the official death toll stands at 30, that number is expected to rise today and hundreds of body bags have been ordered along with extra freezers.
A massive international relief effort was ramped up today as survivors revealed horrifying details of the 'apocalyptic' aftermath of the 185mph, Category-5 storm.

LONDON (Reuters) - British opposition parties said on Friday that they would block Prime Minister Boris Johnson's second bid to call an early general election in mid-October, setting up a showdown with the government over delaying Brexit.
Brexit remains up in the air more than three years after Britons voted to leave the EU in a 2016 referendum. Options range from a turbulent no-deal exit to abandoning the whole endeavour.
Johnson says he wants to take Britain out of the EU on Oct. 31 with or without a deal with the bloc. But he lost his parliamentary majority this week and expelled 21 lawmakers from his ruling Conservative Party's group in parliament after they supported an opposition plan to try to bloc a no-deal exit.
WNU Editor: This is why I like the Canadian parliamentary system. When the government loses confidence from the Parliament, an election is called. In the U.K. .... not so clear. The net result is the U.K. government is now in limbo, and if this continues I do not think the electorate is going to be forgiving. Brexit is an issue that clearly needs to be resolved by the electorate, but the opposition has a different idea.

Dynetics will build the Common Glide Body for both the Army and Navy, which Lockheed will integrate into full-up weapons for the first Army battery by 2023.
WASHINGTON: Yesterday, the Army awarded two key contracts to catch up to Russia and China in the race to field battle-ready hypersonic missiles. After years of one-off experimental prototypes, the US plans to produce and field actual weapons.
Dynetics won $351.6 million to build at least 20 Common Hypersonic Glide Bodies for both the Army and the Navy. Some components will go to the Air Force as well. Lockheed Martin won $347 million to integrate at least eight of those glide bodies with guidance systems, rocket boosters, protective canisters, and so on, arming a battery of four Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) launchers. Both contracts use Other Transaction Authority (OTA) to bypass much of the usual procurement bureaucracy and get the weapons to troops faster.
Yes, these weapons are still technically prototypes, since the Army expects to refine the design based on feedback from soldiers in the field. But the service's rapid acquisition chief, Lt. Gen. Neil Thurgood, has said the four-launcher battery will be an operational unit, focused on field tests and experiments but available for combat in a crisis by 2023.

Moscow offered Washington the chance to purchase Russian hypersonic weapons instead of developing its own, Vladimir Putin has revealed. The US, however, is seeking to create analogues.
The bombshell revelation was made by Russia's president on Thursday, as he was speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.
"I've told Donald [Trump]: Do you want us to sell it [hypersonic weaponry] to you? And we would balance everything by that," Putin said when asked how new Russian weaponry might fit into existing arms-control agreements.
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia would produce missiles that were banned under a landmark Cold-War era nuclear pact that ended last month, but that Moscow would not deploy them unless the United States did so first.
Speaking at an economic forum in Russia's Far East, Putin said Moscow had urged the United States to de-escalate a spiraling arms race between the former Cold War foes, but that Washington had not responded.
The Russian leader said he was concerned by U.S. talk of deploying missiles in Japan and South Korea, a deployment he said would cover parts of Russian territory.
Tensions over nuclear arms control have been rising after Washington formally pulled out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) pact last month accusing Russia of violating it, allegations Moscow denied.
Air Force Brig. Gen. Ed Thomas: There was uncertainty in the past about who should be engaging the press about space issues. "That time has long since passed and we have moved out."
WASHINGTON — The decision to establish an independent Space Force under the U.S. Air Force is now in the hands of Congress. Committees soon will begin negotiating the final version of the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act and the Trump administration is working behind the scenes to ensure the NDAA gives the Pentagon legal authority to stand up the new service.
Hanging over the discussions are questions on whether the Air Force denied space advocates a voice in the debate on the future of the new branch. These accusations have put the service in the uncomfortable position of having to simultaneously argue for the establishment of a Space Force and fight back criticism that senior leaders quashed public discussion on the subject.
For the 1st time, the US has sanctioned Iran's civilian space agency, which develops the same space launch vehicle technology used in ballistic missiles. We call on our allies to join us in deterring the world's top sponsor of terrorism from growing its ballistic missile program.
Iran's space program has long been front for ballistic, nuclear weapons work.
The Trump administration, in a global first, issued sanctions on Iran's space program, which has long operated as a front for Tehran's advanced work on nuclear capable ballistic missile technology.
The latest sanctions come as Tehran's economy teeters on the brink in the face of the Trump administration's tough economic penalties. The new sanctions are significant as the first time an American administration has targeted Iran's space program and acknowledged it is all part of Iran's nuclear weapons industry.
(MATAMOROS, Mexico) — Eight-and-a-half-months pregnant and experiencing contractions, an El Salvadoran woman crossed the Rio Grande — only to be apprehended by Border Patrol. She was not allowed to stay.
Agents took her to the hospital, where doctors gave her medication to stop the contractions. And then, according to the woman and her lawyer, she was almost immediately sent back to Mexico. There, she joined the more than 38,000 people forced to wait across the border for immigration court hearings under a rapidly expanding Trump administration policy. And her plight highlights the health risks and perils presented by the “Remain in Mexico” program.
The woman was waiting Thursday with her 3-year-old daughter in a makeshift tent camp in Matamoros, Mexico, next to an international bridge, due to give birth any day, said her attorney, Jodi Goodwin.
“She’s concerned about having the baby in the street or having to have the baby in a shelter,” Goodwin said.
Pregnant women face special hazards in Mexico because places where migrants wait to enter the U.S. often don’t have access to regular meals, clean water, and medical care.
Many shelters at the Mexico border are at or above capacity already, and some families have been sleeping in tents or on blankets in the blistering summer heat. Reports have abounded of migrants being attacked or kidnapped in Mexican border cities, especially in Tamaulipas state across from South Texas, where the Salvadoran mother is waiting for a November court date.
The Associated Press is not identifying the woman from El Salvador because she fears for her safety.
The “Remain in Mexico” program — officially called the Migrant Protection Protocols — was instituted by the U.S. and Mexico as a way of deterring migrants from crossing the border to seek asylum. Mexico has cooperated with the expansion of the program at the behest of President Donald Trump, who threatened crippling tariffs in June if Mexico did not do more to stop migrants.
The U.S. government does not automatically exempt pregnant women from the program. U.S. Customs and Border Protection declined to comment on the woman’s case. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said people in “vulnerable populations” may be exempt from being sent to Mexico. But pregnant women are not necessarily considered “vulnerable” by CBP, a subsidiary of the department.
“In some cases, pregnancy may not be observable or disclosed, and may not in and of itself disqualify an individual from being amenable for the program,” CBP said in a statement. “Agents and officers would consider pregnancy, when other associated factors exist, to determine amenability for the program.”
Goodwin provided copies of the 28-year-old woman’s immigration paperwork and the bracelet from when she was admitted to Valley Regional Medical Center. “In this particular case, this woman was actually taken to the hospital by CBP,” she said. “There’s no way that CBP could suggest that her pregnancy wasn’t known.”
The paperwork instructs her to return to Brownsville on Nov. 14 for a court hearing.
The U.S. government is establishing temporary tent courtrooms in Brownsville and Laredo, Texas, where immigration judges from around the U.S. will hear migrants’ cases by video. The hearings will start in those cities later this month.
The woman’s notice lists her address as a migrant shelter in Matamoros several miles from the primary international bridge near the camp where she is staying. Goodwin says she has never been to that shelter.
There are at least six cases of pregnant women border-wide who have been sent back to Mexico, according to U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat who recently sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general demanding an investigation into the issue. Goodwin also represents a woman from Peru who was seven months pregnant when border agents allowed her to enter, only to send her back to Mexico the next day.
Mexico offers limited health coverage to people regardless of nationality that includes some of the screenings a pregnant woman needs, said Lina Villa, a Mexico-based health official for Doctors Without Borders. But many migrants don’t know that they can get that coverage, she said.
As their deliveries near, many migrant women aren’t sure whether they’ll have access to a hospital and if they will need surgery, Villa said. They are worried about their child being born in Mexico instead of the U.S. and what that might mean for their prospects of eventually entering the U.S., she said.
“It’s a very, very difficult group of people that needs a lot of help, and they don’t get enough,” she said.
(NEW YORK) — A scientist who has collected DNA from Scotland’s Loch Ness suggests the lake’s fabled monster might be a giant eel.
Neil Gemmell, from the University of Otago in New Zealand, says the project found a surprisingly high amount of eel DNA in the water.
He cautioned, though, that it’s not clear whether that indicates a gigantic eel or just a lot of little ones. But he said at a news conference in Scotland on Thursday that the idea of a giant eel is at least plausible.
The DNA project found no evidence to support the notion that the monster is a long-necked ancient reptile called a plesiosaur.
Loch Ness is the largest and second deepest body of fresh water in the British Isles.
Tired, maybe, after 10 years of fighting track authorities, Caster Semenya has signed up to play with a South African soccer team.
Currently banned from competing in her preferred event, the two-time Olympic 800-meter champion might now be ready to give up running in favor of a sport where she isn’t forced to take hormone-suppressing medication.
Semenya wrote on Twitter on Friday that she had joined Johannesburg-based women’s club JVW FC, posting a photo of herself smiling and holding up a soccer shirt. She said in a separate statement she was looking forward to a “new journey.”
The club, which is owned by South Africa national women’s team captain Janine van Wyk, said Semenya began training with the team this week but she won’t be registered to play league games until next year. But that timing is significant because the South African women’s soccer season in 2020 will be in action at the same time as the Olympics in Tokyo.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and I appreciate the love and support I already get from the team,” the 28-year-old Semenya said. “I am looking forward to this new journey, and hopefully I can contribute as much as I can to the club.”
Semenya, who won her first major track title at the world championships in Berlin a decade ago, didn’t directly say if she was retiring from track and field. But she has hinted on numerous occasions on social media in recent months she would be willing to give up if she isn’t allowed to compete in her favorite event without being forced to take medication to lower her natural testosterone level.
Semenya is barred from defending her 800 title at this month’s world championships — and cannot currently compete in any top-level races in distances from 400 meters to one mile — after refusing to follow new IAAF rules requiring her to reduce her testosterone by taking daily contraceptive pills or having surgery.
She is appealing against those rules at the Swiss supreme court — her second legal challenge against them — but faced a setback in July when the court provisionally upheld the rules. That ended Semenya’s ambitions to defend her title at the worlds in Doha, Qatar. She last ran a competitive race in June.
Semenya lost her first legal appeal at the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier this year, prompting her to go to Switzerland’s supreme court. The latest legal blow might have pushed her to quit. The Swiss Federal Tribunal said Semenya’s latest challenge “does not appear with high probability to be well founded,” although the court still hasn’t given its final verdict.
In the hours after that provisional decision to uphold the testosterone regulations was announced, Semenya wrote on social media: “First chapter of my life done, looking forward to my second chapter.” Her social media pages have also been littered lately with images of soccer balls, uniforms and cleats.
Unlike track, top-level soccer doesn’t have any regulations forcing female players to lower naturally high testosterone levels. The women’s soccer league in South Africa is only semi-professional — the country’s top players play overseas. But South Africa is bidding to host the next Women’s World Cup in 2023.
Usain Bolt played semi-professional soccer in Australia after retiring from track — with limited success.
Van Wyk, a former Houston Dash defender and probably South Africa’s most successful female player, said Semenya had played soccer when she was younger and “it is no shock that she has finally set her sights on playing competitive football.”
“I am extremely elated to have such an iconic athlete join my football club,” van Wyk said. “I am absolutely honored that out of all the other women’s clubs around the world, she has chosen JVW as the club where she would like to start showcasing her football skills.”
Semenya is one of several elite female athletes with one of a group of conditions known as differences of sex development, which result in male and female biological characteristics. She was legally identified as female at birth and has identified as female her whole life but was born with the typical male XY chromosome pattern and has testosterone levels higher than the typical female range.
The IAAF says that testosterone gives her an unfair athletic advantage over other female runners and she must medically reduce it to be allowed to compete in certain events. The IAAF said athletes with her condition are “biologically male,” an assertion that Semenya calls “deeply hurtful.”
Semenya has three world titles to go with her two Olympic golds but has been fighting the IAAF ever since her first worlds in Berlin in 2009, when she arrived as an unknown teenager and beat the best. Her stunning success and muscular build prompted the IAAF to force her to undergo sex verification tests. She was suspended from competition for nearly a year and had to take hormone suppressing medication to be able to run from 2010-15.
Semenya has never spoken in detail in public about those experiences, but she revealed in court testimony in February how they threatened to kill her love of running. In just one example, Semenya said she had been subjected to two intrusive sex verification tests without her proper consent when she was only 18. She called her treatment by track authorities “atrocious and humiliating.”
Amid the destruction Hurricane Dorian brought down upon Great Abaco in the Bahamas this week, Brian Symonette lost his shoes. As he’s traveled around the island in Dorian’s aftermath to get supplies and care for his family, he’s been forced to walk over the feces and debris-strewn ground barefoot. His feet are gashed and his toenails are falling off, he says, but the 34-year-old crab fishing business owner knows he’s been relatively lucky.
“I’ve seen dead bodies. I’ve seen bodies of people crushed by debris, hanging out [of] windows. It’s not good,” Symonette tells TIME.
“I’ve seen seven dead bodies under a [shipping] container… It looks to me like the 40-ft container flew up and crushed all of them at the same time. The storm was so intense that it picked those things up like paper and flew them around,” Symonette says. “You can’t imagine a 40-ft container coming down on you and pinning you down.”
Symonette’s girlfriend, 23-year-old Dayna Hill, says her grandfather was killed by falling debris when he stepped outside during the storm. “He was trying to get out of the house when the house collapsed. First he got pinned in his truck, and once his son was able to get him out of the truck, he was struck by a heavy object that cracked his skull,” Symonette explains.
Hill is four months pregnant and is desperate to get an ultrasound; she and Symonette are afraid that all the stress will harm their unborn child.
Abaco, the chain of islands the couple calls home, is a community of about 17,000 people best known for its boat-building and tourism. But since the Category 5 storm smashed through the islands on Sunday, it seems like they are in the midst of an “apocalypse,” Symonette tells TIME.
The 185 mph winds and rapid flooding have destroyed houses, drowned people and animals and, in the aftermath, left residents looting stores in desperation. Symonette says that the island has endured many hurricanes, but nothing like this in his lifetime.
The Bahamian government has announced that 30 people have been confirmed dead, but Hill and Symonette agree with the Prime Minister’s warning that there could be more. CNN has reported that hundreds of people are still missing, and the government has brought in “more body bags and coolers.”
Symonette says that the island is running out of food, water and fuel and that even people whose houses survived the storm will soon have to leave. Many people do not have access to adequate food or water, and limited sanitation is operating on the island. The storm also left behind pools of water in the remains of destroyed buildings, creating nurseries for mosquitos throughout the island.
“Everybody kind of lost their minds,” Symonette says. “The tune of everyone is, ‘I want to wake up from this nightmare.’”
“All the banks are gone, all the grocery stores are gone. I haven’t spent money in six days. It’s just been trade — ‘O.K., you have gas, I have a truck. You have food, I have somewhere to stay,'” Symonette says. “The evacuation planes are charging $200 a person. A lot of people left their houses with just clothes on. With the Bahamian government, there’s a lot of frustration now, because people are saying we don’t have anything [and] we need to be evacuated.”
Symonette has also seen people walking around carrying firearms and breaking into stores. The local gas station and two hardware stores — which sold guns — have been looted, he says.
Although many people are trying desperately to leave the islands, others are determined to stay, Symonette says. The storm decimated a settlement of makeshift shelters built by Great Abaco’s longtime Haitian community. As some of the Haitians are not documented immigrants, they have begun to take shelter inside abandoned houses.
“If they go to Nassau, [they think] they’re going to be put in a detention center because a lot of them don’t have papers,” Symonette says. (The Bahamas apprehended or helped to apprehend 1,172 Haitians in 2018, according to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force.)
Symonette is planning to travel to Nassau in a small fishing boat on Saturday, now that he knows his loved ones are safe. He’s put each on a plane off the island, one at at time — his grandmother to her house in Nassau on Wednesday, his father on Thursday, and his girlfriend on Friday.
Before leaving, Hill told TIME that the islanders are in desperate need of help.
“It’s just mayhem,” Hill says. “It looks like what you would see in horror movies.”
Hill and Symonette agree that they weren’t sure they would make it through the storm at all. As the hurricane passed on Sunday, the walls of the house in which they’d hunkered down began to flex, the roof collapsed, and the ground floor was flooded with waist-deep water, Symonette says. As Hill began to cry, Symonette says that he thought about taking her and making a run for it, but he’s now glad he stayed — several of the friends’ houses he had considered fleeing to were destroyed.
Prior to the storm, the Bahamas Prime Minister had issued an evacuation order for much of the northern and central portion of the Abaco islands. But for many islanders, as Symonette calls them, enduring hurricanes was part of life. “Just like every other storm, Bahamians made soup. We were planning to watch a movie, go to sleep,” Symonette recalls. But Dorian had other plans.
“We really thought we were going to die in the house,” says Hill.
(Bloomberg) — It’s a nightmare scenario for a cocoa farmer: walking through your plantation you spot some red-veined leaves. Maybe it’s a big lump on one of the branches.
You know immediately the tree is doomed, infected by the deadly swollen-shoot disease. Even worse, the plants around it are probably contaminated too, but you can’t be sure because the symptoms can take years to appear.
Swollen shoot is unique to West Africa, where about three-quarters of the world’s cocoa is grown. The disease was identified nearly a century ago, yet scientists say a cure is years away and early detection methods are only just being introduced. This year, a devastating outbreak in the world’s No. 2 cocoa grower is renewing urgency to find a solution.
Ghana has cut its crop forecast by 11% this season because of the disease, people familiar with the matter said previously. About 16% of the country’s cocoa crops are infected, according to George Ameyaw, a senior scientist at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana.
“Looking at the Ghana situation, it’s bad, very, very bad,” he said. “The situation is already devastating, there’s a need for a radical regeneration of all those areas.”
Cocoa is a vital part of the economy in both Ghana and neighboring Ivory Coast, the biggest producer. The crop is grown in often remote and mostly poor areas by hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers. Swollen shoot reduces yields on infected trees and eventually kills them.
“I wish more people would understand the sort of magnitude of the lives impacted,” said Judith Brown, a virologist studying swollen shoot at the University of Arizona. “It’s affecting people who rely on it 100% for their income.”
Francis Gyaben, who grows cocoa near Ghana’s southwest border with Ivory Coast, said about 60% of his 20-acre (8-hectare) farm has been ravaged by the swollen shoot virus. “I’ve been reduced to a young man starting life again, I’ve lost most of my source of livelihood to this virus invasion,” Gyaben, 60, said by phone. “I know some of the remaining trees have been affected by the disease and it’s only a matter of time that it becomes evident.’”
While Ghana’s output this year was severely affected by swollen shoot, Ivory Coast is headed for a record crop, so the affect on global cocoa prices has been muted.
Still, if swollen shoot isn’t brought under control in the long term, more cocoa production will shift to South America and the Caribbean, said Brown, whose research includes identifying different species of the virus using genome sequencing. Optimistically, it could take 15 years to make real progress in managing the disease, she said.
For now, farmers manage the virus by chopping down, burning and replacing trees that show symptoms. Yet that often has little effect in containing the disease, which is spread by tiny white insects called mealybugs.
To help address the problem, scientists from Africa, Europe and the U.S. formed an international task force to share information, said Herve Bisseleua, a scientist and director at the World Cocoa Foundation’s Ghana office.
Governments and chocolate companies including Nestle SA and Mars Inc. are also working through several initiatives on ways to improve how cocoa is grown. In one example, the Ghanaian government has tested the use of “barrier crops” – adding other plants such as citrus trees among cocoa crops so that the virus isn’t so easily transferred from leaf to leaf.
The Ghana Cocoa Board announced in July it will work with scientists at Israel’s Volcani center to find solutions to the disease. Drones could also be a useful tool to help detect signs of the disease in plantations, according to Brown.
The efforts to fight swollen shoot are having some effect, with early-detection tools now being introduced in Ivory Coast and Ghana, according to Bisseleua. Still, there’s a long way to go.
“The gravity of the potential impacts should not be underestimated,” he said. “No cocoa producing area has really experienced this before.”
Violent riots broke out in South Africa’s largest city and commercial capital, Johannesburg, with mobs targeting foreign-owned shops and stores. Many South African workers resent the influx of foreigners, particularly those coming from other parts of Africa, out of fear that they are taking jobs away from them. Matters were compounded by the spread of fake news and images claiming that Nigerians were targeted in the attacks, inciting mobs in Nigeria to attack South African-owned businesses in reprisal. While the death toll in South Africa has reached double-digits, it does not appear that any Nigerians were among the casualties.
Violence has also flared in other African countries in response to the developments in South Africa. Boycotts have begun against South Africa by sports teams (Zambia withdrew from a friendly football match that was to have taken place against South Africa over the coming weekend) as well as musicians.
Why It Matters:
Violence against foreigners is not new to South Africa, but this week’s scenes were reminiscent of the countrywide xenophobic violence of 2008 that brought the honeymoon phase of a post-apartheid South Africa to an abrupt end. Similar attacks have taken place in recent weeks and months with working class African immigrants being the primary targets of the violence, prompting African governments in the region to condemn South Africa and its president, Cyril Ramaphosa, for their inability to stabilize the situation.
For Ramaphosa the timing could not have been worse as the country hosts the annual World Economic Forum meeting on Africa this week in Cape Town. Visiting investors—whom Ramaphosa is desperately wooing in an attempt to revive the sluggish economy—will struggle to believe his pitch that his country has put the volatile years of his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, behind it. Delegations from Rwanda (which is vying to replace South Africa’s position as the preferred destination for Western investment on the continent), Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo withdrew their participation in the meeting. Nigeria, which is also rivaling South Africa for the position as the largest economy on the continent, is supporting the efforts of a Nigerian airline to evacuate Nigerian citizens out of South Africa for free. The violence is bad enough, and the political maneuvering makes matters worse. So is the fake news that is inflaming tempers across the continent. It is a combustible situation.
What Happens Next:
South Africa will continue to attract immigrants from across the continent to its shores, and to its cities in particular, given that its level of economic development is unrivaled in Africa and immigrants tend to thrive in the informal retail sector. But despite South Africa offering many people better economic opportunities than they tend to have in their home countries, the country’s overall economic malaise is set to continue; GDP growth continues to be outstripped by population growth rate, which translates into a real decline of GDP per capita. Unemployment is also the highest in a decade—far higher among the youth population—and is combined with inequality rates that are the highest in the world. Given that some politicians are willing to incite xenophobia for political gain (as has happened under the current mayor of Johannesburg) and that isolated incidents of crime by foreigners have the potential to fuel vigilantism by locals (and that’s before factoring the ability of technology to spread the violence across borders near-instantaneously), attacks like these are likely to increase.
The Key Statistic That Explains It:
29%: The unemployment rate in the country is 29 percent, which is the highest recorded figure in more than a decade. When nearly 1 in 3 people in the country don’t have formal jobs, it doesn’t take much to light the fuse of aggrievement.
The One Misconception About It:
That xenophobia is South Africa’s only problem, or (arguably) even its biggest one: violence against women in the country is so widespread that thousands of women marched against the government in Cape Town this week to protest politicians’ failure to protect women from increasing levels of violence. According to The Guardian, this past August was “the most deadly month for violent crimes against women the country has ever seen.”
The One Thing to Say About It at a Dinner Party:
When Ramaphosa finally displaced Zuma as president of South Africa in 2018, there was hope that better days were ahead for the country. A couple of years later, it’s clear that South Africa’s problems run much deeper than can be addressed by any one person. Ramaphosa needs to improve South Africa’s economy to help prevent these types of events in the future, but events like these scare off the precise type of investors he needs to improve the country’s economy. It’s a vicious circle, and he has yet to prove the political talent to break it; the next few months will be critical towards figuring out what kind of leader he really is, and whether he can deliver on the promise South Africans desperately need him to.
(Bloomberg) — Hurricane Dorian has left oil seeping into the ground on the island of Grand Bahama after the storm blew the tops off five crude-storage tanks on the island.
“According to the information we have right now, the roofs of five tanks are gone,” Norway’s Equinor ASA, which owns the storage facilities, said in a statement. “We do not know if they are been carried away by the winds or fallen into the tanks.”
Equinor said Thursday that a flyover it conducted showed oil had seeped into the ground but not the sea. The tanks can hold 6.75 million barrels — almost 1 million tons. The terminal was shut on Saturday in preparation for the storm and will stay closed until further notice, the company said Friday.
A video tweeted by Coral Vita, which works to protect coral reefs on the island, appeared to show that crude reached a nearby road and was outside a perimeter fence.
The environmental impact from the spill is one of many brutal blows for Grand Bahama after the storm put large tracts of the Bahamian island under water and left thousands homeless.
Equinor said Friday that it’s still too soon to estimate how long the response will take and that it doesn’t have information about oil reaching the sea.
“The situation in the Bahamas is still challenging and infrastructure has sustained severe damage,” Equinor said. “All required resources are being mustered and our primary concern is to ensure the safety of our employees and the environment. We are mobilizing people and equipment to respond to the spill as soon as possible.”
(LONDON) — Representatives for the British royal family say Prince Harry will get to see the legacy of his late mother’s humanitarian work in Angola during a fall trip to southern Africa.
Buckingham Palace released details Friday of the trip Harry is taking with his wife, Meghan, and their infant son Archie, who was born in May.
The itinerary has Meghan and Archie staying in South Africa for the entire Sept. 23-Oct. 2 trip. Harry also plans to go to Angola, Malawi and Botswana.
Harry’s private secretary, Sam Cohen, said that while in Angola the prince will see land mine clearing work that has continued long after Princess Diana brought worldwide attention to the problem. She died in 1997.
Meghan will visit South African organizations promoting women’s education, health, entrepreneurship and leadership.
(LONDON) — Britain’s bedeviling Brexit dilemma intensified Friday, as opposition parties refused to support Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s call for an election until he secures a delay to Britain’s exit from the European Union — something he vows he’ll never do.
Johnson insists Britain must leave the EU in 55 days, and says an election is the only way to break the deadlock that has seen lawmakers repeatedly reject the divorce deal on offer, but also block attempts to leave the EU without one.
He wants to go to the public on Oct. 15, two weeks before the scheduled Brexit day of Oct. 31, but needs the support of two-thirds of lawmakers to trigger a snap election.
Johnson lost a vote on the same question this week, but he plans to try again Monday.
After discussions Friday, lawmakers from several opposition parties said they would not back an election unless the government asked the EU to postpone Brexit, removing the risk the U.K. could crash out without a deal. Johnson says he would “rather be dead in a ditch” than delay Brexit.
Parliament is trying to force his hand, passing an opposition-backed law that would compel Johnson’s Conservative government to seek a three-month Brexit postponement if no divorce deal is agreed by Oct. 19.
The legislation was approved Friday by the unelected House of Lords, after gaining backing from the elected House of Commons earlier this week. It will become law within days once it gets the formality of royal assent.
But pro-EU lawmakers want to hold off on triggering an election until the Brexit delay has actually been secured, fearing Johnson will try to wriggle out of the commitment.
“I do not trust the prime minister to do his duty,” said Liz Saville Roberts, leader in Parliament of the Welsh party Plaid Cymru.
She said lawmakers needed to be sitting in Parliament in late October, rather than on the election campaign trail, to ensure Britain does not crash out of the EU. That makes an election before November unlikely.
“We need to make sure that we get past the 31st of October,” she said.
Blocking an election is a risky strategy for the opposition, which could be accused of denying the public its say.
The Conservative Party on Friday tweeted a mocked-up image of Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in a chicken suit, and Johnson said he had “never known an opposition in the history of democracy that’s refused to have an election.”
“I think obviously they don’t trust the people, they don’t think that the people will vote for them, so they’re refusing to have an election,” he said.
Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “An early general election is now a question of ‘when’ not ‘if’ — but Johnson mustn’t be allowed to dictate the timing as a device to avoid scrutiny and force through a ‘no deal’ Brexit.”
Johnson’s options are unclear if he loses Monday’s vote. He could call a no-confidence vote in his own government, which would only need a simple majority to pass. He could try to change the law that governs how elections can be triggered. He could even resign.
In short, it’s a complicated mess.
Johnson became prime minister in July after promising Conservatives that he would complete Brexit and break the impasse that has paralyzed Britain’s politics since voters decided in June 2016 to leave the bloc and which brought down his predecessor, Theresa May.
After only six weeks in office, however, his plans are in crisis. The EU refuses to renegotiate the deal it struck with May, which has been rejected three times by Britain’s Parliament.
Johnson’s push to leave the EU at the end of next month, come what may, is facing opposition in the courts as well as in Parliament. Most economists say a no-deal Brexit would cause severe economic disruption and plunge the U.K. into recession.
Johnson enraged his opponents by announcing he would suspend Parliament at some point next week until Oct. 14, leaving just over two weeks to the deadline. Critics accused him of subverting democracy and carrying out a “coup.”
Transparency campaigner Gina Miller took the government to court, arguing the suspension was an “unlawful abuse of power.”
On Friday, a panel of three High Court judges ruled against her, but said the case can be appealed to the Supreme Court, which has set a hearing for Sept. 17.
Outside court, Miller said she was disappointed with the ruling but would not give up.
“We need to protect our institutions,” she said.” It is not right that they should be shut down or bullied, especially at this momentous time in our history.”
Johnson insists he wants to secure a divorce deal, and his chief Brexit negotiator, David Frost, was in Brussels Friday for talks with EU officials. But the bloc says Britain has made no concrete proposals for changes to May’s rejected deal.
EU officials say it seems increasingly likely Britain will depart without an agreement.
“The situation in Britain is quite a mess now and we don’t know what is happening there,” said Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne, whose country currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency.
“It seems very obvious that we are not getting Brexit with an agreement,” he said.

There can be no mixed feelings, misconceptions or complications about Robert Mugabe’s legacy. He presided over the destruction of millions of people’s lives over a span of 37 years. Some he murdered in cold blood, others it was a slow roast and for many it was a silent death as they lived in fear of upsetting the brutal ruler that was Robert Mugabe.
My dad called me a few days after I had started the #ThisFlag citizen’s movement in 2016 that challenged Robert Mugabe’s misrule. He was upset, scared and in a panic that I had never seen before. “Stop this craziness immediately!” he shouted. “You have no idea what you’re dealing with. Mugabe and his people will kill you and all of us for this.” I was scared too but I was driven by something else that completely overrode my fears – the urgent need for change. What had Mugabe done to cause my parents’ generation to be so scared that it was unthinkable to say a single bad thing about him, even in private? Mugabe demonstrated one thing very clearly throughout his leadership of Zimbabwe, and it was that he had no regard for anyone’s life except for his own and those of his children.
For political expediency he was not afraid to train a whole brigade of soldiers with one purpose — to subdue if not completely wipe out an entire tribe. The killings of Ndebele people in the south of our country in the early 1980s is not a phase that any good deeds done afterward could erase; nobody can claim ‘but he was a good man.’ Men women and children, many still unaccounted for, were murdered in cold blood and buried in shallow graves just because he felt insecure. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Mugabe’s desire to be the supreme, unchallenged and lifetime leader of Zimbabwe birthed political violence, forced disappearances, tortures, rigged elections, corruption and an economy that collapsed multiple times in one generation, leaving millions desperately poor.
Sitting in Chikurubi Maximum Security prison in February 2017, the first of many times I was arrested, I couldn’t imagine how this man whom I had loved as a small child had become such a monster. The fact is he hadn’t “become” a monster overnight — he had always been. I just hadn’t experienced it yet. Since July 2016 he had hunted me down and threatened me with expulsion from the country or imprisonment if I persisted with my campaign. He went as far as calling me a foreigner in my own motherland in his desperate attempt to demonize me for speaking out against misrule and corruption. Central intelligence operatives had visited my home, my office, and my church and issued threats to my family and colleagues and even beating up some of them. I’ll never forget that the CIO showed up at my kid’s school wanting to “see” them. I’ll never forget that in the middle of the night while I was in prison, my pregnant wife was besieged by his men who threatened to rape her. His administration charged me with treason for simply demanding a better nation. Arrest after arrest and interrogation upon interrogation, I came face to face with the reality that Robert Mugabe was not the admirable pan-African liberator that many had made him out to be. I speak of experiences that I thankfully survived but what can be said of those who are either no longer alive or those still too scared to speak of the worst fear of their lives.
Whatever good things Mugabe did pale enormously in comparison to his brutality against his own people and the future he robbed us of. The phone call with my dad was a defining moment in how I felt about Robert Mugabe’s legacy. After dad had warned me of the danger of what I was doing I responded, “Dad, I hear you but this man has taken away the dreams of three generations: My grandfather’s, yours and mine. I will not stand by as he takes my children’s dreams too.”
My culture tells us that when a person dies, he must be remembered by his good deeds and that we must not expose the bad things he did as a sign of respect. While I have forgiven Robert Mugabe for what he did to me personally, I find it hard to be silent about how I experienced him. I find it hard to be silent after his death, especially because the hallmark of his leadership is that we had to be silent while he lived. My respect is instead for those who died and were brutalized at his command. But while he transitions from this land, he is leaving scars of his ruthless rule.

India's space agency lost contact with the Vikram lander around 2.1 km over the lunar surface, in a setback to the country's maiden attempt to land a spacecraft on the moon's surface. As the lander began the 15 minute autonomous descent, it overcame a major hurdle of what is called as the rough breaking phase to go down from a height of 30 kms to around 2.1 kms. Soon after, the lander lost contact with the ground station. However, the orbiter, which has several instruments on board continues to hover around 100 kms over the moon.As the graphs deviated on the screens at the control centre in Bengaluru, Isro chairman K Sivan went into a huddle with other scientists including former chairman Kiran Kumar to understand what could have caused the blip. Sivan had called it "15 minutes of terror" due to the uncertainty and the inabiity of the ground station to take control of the spacecraft during the descent.Sivan soon went to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had arrived to witness the descent and the rolling of the rover, to convey that the communication was lost with the spacecraft.Modi asked Sivan to be courageous, while Sivan's former boss K Kasturirangan & K Vijayraghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the government consoled the Isro chairman."As planned, normal performance was observed until altitude of 2.1 km. Then communication from lander to ground station was lost. The data is being analysed," Sivan read out a terse statement.Modi, who gathered around the scientists, asked them to be courageous and continue to work on other missions. 71018204 India is proud of our scientists! They've given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to b… https://t.co/nz01QWxWZT— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) 1567803822000 "I have seen sadness on your face, but this is not a small achievement. The country is proud of you. This effort of yours has taught many things. I have been told by scientists, if the communication comes back, then we will get a lot,"Modi told the scientists. "Hope for the best". The Chandrayaan-2, a Rs 978-crore project, was launched on July 22 with an aim to land a lander and roll a rover on the moon's surface. India was to be the fourth country to attempt a soft landing on moon and the country had chosen the south polar region, a place which is suspected to have heavy water presence.
NEW DELHI: Xiaomi has urged India to provide better incentives than offered by the likes of China and Vietnam to be the export hub for the Chinese smartphone maker globally. Xiaomi began exporting some models to Nepal and Bangladesh on trial basis after shipments from India crossed 100 million units in July, within five years of starting operations here. "In any country, any market, no other brand has been able to sell over 100 million smartphones within the first five years," vice-president Manu Jain told ET. He added that the company, through pilot exports, wants to understand how the duty structure works, before taking a call to expand it. "The cost of local manufacturing (in India) is higher than the global average, especially that of China and Vietnam. It will be helpful if the Indian government could incentivise us to make exports price-competitive with global standards," Jain, who is also the Xiaomi India managing director, said. India intends to promote local production for exports & wean away manufacturers from countries like China and Vietnam, amid growing Sino-US trade tension. Xiaomi has increased its overall manufacturing capacity to three phones per second from one per second two years ago, supplied by seven plants operated by three contract manufacturers — Taiwan's Foxconn Technologies, US-based Flex and China's HiPad Technologies. High production capacities have made it the top smartphone player in India by shipments for 8 straight quarters. As of June, Xiaomi ruled over 28.3% of the smartphone market, said IDC India. Jain said that basis IDC estimates, Xiaomi should clock shipments of 40-50 million smartphones in 2019, after recording 20 million in the first half. It expects the overall shipments in India to rise 8% to 150-155 million in 2019 from 143 million in 2018. The company has also worked out back-up plans to fight a slowdown in consumption, given the gloomy economic environment. "Not only do we have one back-up, we have three-four versions of the plans in case things don't go as per plan. One can never predict the future because our industry evolves every quarter, unlike other industries that are much more stable," Jain said. The Beijing-headquartered company aims to more than double its number of exclusive stores to 5,000 by 2020, which will include ones owned by franchisees, which will make the brand the largest retail network by a single brand retail entity, Jain said. It will also make the company one with the largest rural retail network with over 2,000 Mi stores in villages and talukas. The offline presence will get expanded to 400 cities by the year end, from 200 now. bal standards," Jain, who is also the Xiaomi India managing director, said. India intends to promote local pro-
The acceptance rate at these schools is in single digits – sometimes as low as 1%. And no, we aren't talking about the IIMs or IITs. These are some of India's software development and coding startups that follow the model of 'Study Without Paying a Fee, Pay back When You Get a Job', aka, income share agreement. For a detailed explanation of ISA in ET see…If demand for placement is so high, companies offering ISA should be scaling up. They want to – but there are some formidable challenges.FIRST, THE NUMBERS For its current batch of 150, AttainU got 8,000 applications.Pesto Tech, which started with an ISA batch of 3 students and has accepted only 56 students till date, has over the last couple of months received interest from over 75,000 applicants.InterviewBit claims to pick 1 out of every 100 applicants it gets while it has more than 1 million software engineers registered on its platform along with 1500+ students enrolled in the ISA programme.WHY THE HUGE DEMAND The huge demand for these courses is thanks to startups tapping into an opportunity defined by current skill gaps – technology has changed, most IT courses haven't kept pace. Plus, remote jobs, not requiring onsite presence, are coming of age and companies are recruiting top talent from all over the world. And facilitating the ISA model is also India's better data connectivity. Startups can reach students all over India and conduct live classes, avoiding overhead costs of creating a campus. 71016092 HOW THE MARKET WORKS Ayush Jaiswal, CEO, Pesto Tech, says "The big opportunity is disrupting the tech recruitment market -- once we have enough supply, we foresee a direct bridge between Pesto and engineering hiring managers looking to hire top talent. They just tell us the requirement and we provide them with the perfect candidate."Employers not only save on search costs. They also save direct recruitment costs that they pay to recruiters, Jaiswal added.AttainU founder Divyam Goel explains further. Currently, there are around 24 million students enrolled in colleges across disciplines. This number is going to increase 3x in the next 5-8 years. A majority of these students graduate, after spending a lot of time and money, without employable skills. "We provide a high-quality second chance to the deserving, motivated students from this bucket," Goel said. AttainU has received $300,000 funding from angel investors so far.ISA'S ATTRACTION India is a market that's particularly opportune for ISA & similar instruments. For one, the supply pool and potential demand are both huge. Second, young Indians typically have low disposable income, especially for a retraining course. Narayanan Ramaswamy, partner and national head for education and skill development, KPMG, India, says: "(The scope of) any instrument that offers an unsecured loan to students, when they don't have assets to pledge, is very high. For the financial institution, there is a surrogate guarantee in terms of the educational institution. For the educational institution, they need such instruments if they need to grow and give quality education; they need money. The ecosystem provides huge opportunities for ISAs to grow".BUT…THE SCALING UP CHALLENGE Startups ET spoke to described various scaling up challenges.Ayush Jaiswal, CEO, Pesto Tech, which received queries from 75,000 applications in just two months, said: "We didn't quite anticipate such demand and are scaling up our admissions team to review profiles faster. The next short term goal over the next 6 months is to accept about 1,000 students and get them to an average salary of `30 lakhs each or gross salary value of `300 crore." Pesto wants to do the smaller things right first. But if Pesto can scale up, he says: "over a 3 year period we are looking at a GSV jobs that could have gone to other countries".Masai School, a seed-funded company, has 53 students. As part of scaling up, Masai School is going to introduce a coding programme specifically designed for working professionals who otherwise cannot enroll for a full-time course. "Keeping in mind that this is an on-campus programme, the only challenge we face currently is real estate rental rates," Prateek Shukla, CEO & Co-founder, Masai School.AttainU's Goel says his biggest challenge so far has been to maintain learning outcome quality while scaling.6Benches.in founder JK Reddy agrees with Goel. 6Benches is a "Technology Bootcamp Learning Center" offering IT companies trained engineers with six months experience. 6Benches says its pitch is that companies save training and bench cost by hiring highly-trained engineers. It recovers training cost taking engineers' first-month salary. Reddy says his scaling up challenges are to keep training quality high and trainee motivation going as his aim is to give 2 years of learning on the job capabilities in 6 months. He says once multiple batches graduate into corporates and with the aid of big corporate tie-ups, his task will be easier.Yet another challenge is getting high-paying jobs for larger number of students. Most ISA startups have hiring partners. InterviewBit says it has 600+ high paying companies as hiring partners, and average annual pay is `12 lakh-plus for entry-level developers. Abhimanyu Saxena, co-founder, InterviewBit says his biggest challenge while scaling up is that the number of jobs in software engineering in India paying more than `15 lakh is limited. "Once we are training 10,000 students every year, we may start hitting the ceiling of job availability. We have already started leg work on bringing more jobs to India by helping growing companies in Silicon Valley set up their India offices. So, from processing applications faster, to keep motivation of applicants going, to high rentals to hitting a jobs availability ceiling, ISA startups will have to contend with many things as they grow. But the good news is the vast potential of the Indian market.
MUMBAI: Car, two-wheeler and truck makers have raised discounts to the highest levels in recent years as they look to perk up demand during the festive season and clear stock ahead of new emission norms set to kick in from April 2020. In a market where discounts of 5-7% were seen as par for the course for this time of the year, rebates for passenger vehicles are now as high as 29% while truckmakers are further pushing up the meter to 20-25%. The September offers are comparable to those in December, when auto companies focus on liquidating stock. With block closures becoming a regular phenomenon and inventory piling up, automakers and car dealers are touting this festive season as 'the best time to buy'. Market leader Maruti Suzuki, usually the most conservative in the industry, is leading the wave with discounts of Rs 30,000-1.2 lakh. Entry model Alto is available at almost 18-20% lower than the sticker price while Hyundai's Grand i10 is being offered at a 15% discount. Shashank Srivastava, Maruti's head of sales and marketing, said that the company is offering discounts to clear BSIV inventories and is seeing some pickup in retail sales and enquiries. "Our enquiry level has increased in the current month and retail sales in August has been better than in July; the discount schemes are likely to support the current momentum," Srivastava said. Maruti's average discount in the June quarter rose Rs 1,816 per vehicle to Rs 16,941, which is 3.3% of the net realisation per car (the money the company makes from each unit). This is likely to go up and could affect second quarter profits. Maruti Suzuki has also rolled out seven models compliant with the new emission norms and is offering dealer-level discounts for these BS-VI vehicles. 71018781 Hyundai said the discounts being given in August and September are normally offered in October or December. Toyata Kirloskar is offering discounts of as much as Rs 2,50,000 on the Yaris to clear its inventory while Honda is giving discounts of Rs 42,000-4,00,000 with the highest rebate being offered on CRV. 71018784 Renault and Nissan have lowered prices of Captur and Kicks by over Rs 1.5 lakh. Industry experts say carmakers are trying to ensure that all BS-IV stock is sold off before next year's deadline as the unsold inventory may have to be scrapped. Some dealers, who are sitting on old stock of 2017-2018, may have to liquidate it at throwaway prices. A leading motorcycle dealer said the current level of discounting in two wheelers has probably never been witnessed in the last 20 years. Top companies are offering discounts of Rs 1,000-1,500 on cash sales and a similar amount as interest subvention if customers buy vehicles through financing.. The discounts in the commercial vehicle segment too are quite high. The average discount for medium and heavy trucks is now Rs 3,50,000-375,000 per vehicle for leading players.
By Gaurang SomaiyaThe rupee came under pressure and was one of the worst performing currencies in the Asian pack as trade tensions between the US and China escalated. The tensions also kept the yuan weighed down against the US dollar. The Chinese Renminbi fell to the lowest level in 11-years as talks between the US and China did not progress well. On the domestic front, FIIs also pulled out funds from the equity segment as the additional surcharge issue weighed on the overall market sentiment. But as the month came to an end Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman decided to rollback surcharge levied on foreign portfolio investors levied in Budget. The proposal to levy surcharge on FPIs kept the momentum negative on domestic equities and the segment witnessed outflow to the tune of $2.49 billion. On the other hand, debt segment witnessed an inflow of $1.6 billion. In its latest policy meeting, the RBI unexpectedly decided to cut rates by 35 bps and hinted towards further rate cuts if needed. The overall commentary was a little dovish and at the same time slower growth expectations will keep the gains capped for the rupee. Data showed India's economy grew at 5 per cent in Q1 compared with growth of 5.8% in the previous quarter. This month, the domestic market participants will be keeping an eye on more reforms from the government. Inflation numbers will also be important to watch following rise in food prices in the recent past. At the same time, on the global front, trade talks between the US and China will continue to remain in focus especially after both the leaders have softened their stance. We expect that the USD-INR pair could quote with negative bias and in the range of 70.50 to 73.50 (spot).Dollar at the start of the month fell against its major crosses as trade war escalated. In the last couple of weeks, volatility for the dollar has been high and it was triggered, especially after the Jackson Hole symposium. Just before the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell was about to give its speech, China levied tariffs on US products. On the same day, in a retaliatory move the US President decided to increase import tariffs on specific Chinese products thereby weigh on the overall market sentiment. Economic numbers like growth, employment number or trade numbers have had muted impact on the dollar and we expect that trade war will be one of the primary factors that will influence a move for the greenback. This month, on the domestic front no major economic data is expected to be released but volatility could remain elevated following the ongoing trade talks between US and China. Facebook has partnered with Microsoft, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other institutions to fight 'deepfakes' and has committed $10 million towards creating open source tools that can better detect if a video has been doctored."Deepfake" techniques, which present realistic AI-generated videos of real people doing and saying fictional things, have significant implications for determining the legitimacy of information presented online."That's why Facebook, the Partnership on AI, Microsoft, and academics from Cornell Tech, MIT, University of Oxford, University of California-Berkeley, University of Maryland, College Park, and University at Albany-SUNY are coming together to build the Deepfake Detection Challenge (DFDC)," Mike Schroepfer, Chief Technology Officer, said on Thursday. The "Deepfake Detection Challenge" will include a data set and leaderboard, as well as grants and awards, to spur the industry to create new ways of detecting and preventing media manipulated via AI from being used to mislead others."No Facebook user data will be used in this data set. We are also funding research collaborations and prizes for the challenge to help encourage more participation. In total, we are dedicating more than $10 million to fund this industry-wide effort," Schroepfer said in a statement. The full data set release and the DFDC launch will happen at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) this December."In order to move from the information age to the knowledge age, we must do better in distinguishing the real from the fake, reward trusted content over untrusted content, and educate the next generation to be better digital citizens," said Professor Hany Farid from UC Berkeley."The goal of this competition is to build AI systems that can detect the slight imperfections in a doctored image and expose its fraudulent representation of reality," added Antonio Torralba, Director of the MIT Quest for Intelligence."Deepfakes" are video forgeries that make people appear to be saying things they never did, like the popular forged videos of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that went viral recently."Given the recent developments in being able to generate manipulated information (text, images, videos, and audio) at scale, we need the full involvement of the research community in an open environment to develop methods and systems that can detect and mitigate the ill effects of manipulated multimedia," noted Professor Rama Chellappa from University of Maryland.
