Hulu Plus Expands to 3DS and Wii by Year's End

Posted: 21 Oct 2011 06:35 AM PDT

Hulu Plus

3DS and Wii were each a bit late to get Netflix support as compared with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but they do both have capable (albeit non-HD) Netflix apps. Following in the wake of Microsoft and Sony's home consoles, both of Nintendo's platforms will soon be getting support for another on-demand video provider: Hulu Plus.

Nintendo today announced Hulu support would be coming by the end of the year to both 3DS and Wii. It'll be available through a free app download and requires a Hulu Plus subscription, currently priced at $7.99 per month. With a subscription you'll be able to stream TV shows to your system of choice from a number of different networks -- NBC, Comedy Central, FX, and others.

Nintendo 3DS Press Conference Recap: Special Edition Mario 3DS Systems, Kid Icarus

Posted: 21 Oct 2011 05:49 AM PDT

special edition Mario 3DS

Nintendo broadcasted a pre-recorded press conference today via their official website, NicoNico Video and Ustream. Announced just this Wednesday, Nintendo teased that the conference was to highlight the features of the new Nintendo 3DS system update, the online features of Mario Kart 7, and some other stuff they couldn't fit into their TGS press conference.

Now that the actually kind of bizarre (thanks to president Satoru Iwata's crazy hand gestures) conference is over, we gathered all the interesting bits into an easy-to-digest list.

What to Expect From BlizzCon 2011

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 01:43 PM PDT

BlizzCon 2010

Blizzard's annual fan convention, BlizzCon, kicks off tomorrow and runs through Saturday, October 22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Despite an increase in ticket prices -- from $150 in 2010 to $175 this year -- the show sold out very quickly. Those who aren't lucky enough to be attending the event can still experience much of the event by purchasing a Virtual Ticket for $39.99 that will allow you to watch panels, take part in contests, get any in-game items given out to attendees, and more.

A map of the convention center can be found here. That could come in handy -- Blizzard may only be focused on three franchises but you probably wouldn't guess that based on the amount of space BlizzCon takes up.

Battlefield 3 Likened to "Standard-Def" When Not Installed on 360

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 12:26 PM PDT

Battlefield 3

Xbox 360 owners are free to install any game they choose to their Xbox 360 hard drive. This can reduce load times and eliminate the obnoxious noises that emanate from the system's disc drive. Unlike PlayStation 3, mandatory installations aren't something that's commonly seen on Xbox 360. While Battlefield 3 only presents installation as an option, it does make a difference -- and it's something you'll definitely want to do if you can afford the space.

Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach explained to GamerZines that installing the game essentially "gives you the same abilities, kind of, as the PC and PS3. You can actually stream information from the hard drive."

Assassin's Creed Movie Deal Close With Sony Pictures

Assassin's Creed movie

It is no secret that Ubisoft wants to expand a number of its franchises into the world of movies and TV shows. On the heels of an announcement that the Raving Rabbids franchise will be turned into a television show by Nickelodeon, Sony Pictures is apparently close to a deal that would allow it to create not just a film, but a film franchise based on Assassin's Creed.

This is according to Variety, which reports that negotiations are in the final stages following a bidding war in recent months. Universal Studios was among the other companies interested in the movie.

Next Xbox to be Unveiled and Launched in 2013 - Report

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 10:55 AM PDT

Xbox 360

There is no questioning that a successor to the Xbox 360 is in the works. We've seen more than enough indications of that and it simply makes sense that an Xbox Next, Xbox 720, or whatever you want to call it is being developed by Microsoft. What we can't say for sure is when the system will be launched or even revealed, although according to a new report, the answer to both of those questions is 2013.

A report by Develop based on numerous sources suggests the third Xbox will be unveiled at E3 in 2013. The system will then be launched several months later across much of the world; the possibility of this slipping into early 2014 was acknowledged as a possibility. One would hope Microsoft takes the time it needs and doesn't repeat its mistakes with the Xbox 360 that led to the Red Ring of Death fiasco.

Double Dragon, Downloadable Videos Now For Sale on 3DS eShop

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 10:20 AM PDT

Double Dragon

After an unexciting update last week, Nintendo today released Double Dragon on the 3DS eShop. This is the 1990 Game Boy version of Double Dragon you're getting for $3.99, which means you're getting monochrome graphics and a slightly different version than you might be used to playing on NES or other platforms.

Although the music and gameplay sound and play like other versions, a number of changes were made by developer Technos Japan, namely changes in level design. That may not be such a bad thing; fans of the console version will be able to get a slightly different experience with this Virtual Console game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is World of Warcraft With Lightsabers, And It's Amazing

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 09:00 AM PDT

If you don't like MMOs, then you won't like Star Wars: The Old Republic. Despite Bioware's pitch that the game is "Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, and 6 rolled into one", based my time with the beta, TOR owes more to World of Warcraft than KOTOR.

I sunk around 20 hours into my human Jedi Shadow/Consular before writing this preview. In that time I went from young Padawan on the reclaimed Jedi homeworld of Tython to Jedi Consular on my own ship with a mission set to take me across the galaxy. My character is now sitting aboard said craft at level 20 -- the same level I quit playing most of the WOW characters I ever created. However, I don't want to quit. I'd be playing the game right now if 1UP wasn't currently being slammed by the rush of games being released.
