The 2010s were an interesting bunch of years. They saw the split between old-school methods of producing big power (fat displacement, superchargers) and modern ways of making driving efficient (cylinder deactivation, turbocharging). Some of the units listed here have been discontinued; others began their lives only recently and will hopefully continue to affect change into this new decade.

(Bloomberg) -- Murders in Mexico rose to a new record in 2019, the first full year of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's presidency, posing a challenge to the popular leader to make good on a campaign promise of reducing violence.
Slayings, often fueled by the nation's drug cartels, climbed to 34,582, compared with 33,743 a year earlier, according to data released by the national public security system. The 2.5% increase represents the least since homicides fell in 2014 and compared with increases of 17% to 28% in the previous three years.
The Turkish president's comments come amid growing efforts to develop oil exploration in the region.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Somalia had invited Turkey to conduct energy drilling and exploration operations in its seas.
"We had a proposal from Somalia. They said that Somalia had oil in its seas. [They said] as in Libya, [we] could do the same [drilling operations] in [Somalia]," Erdogan told journalists on the presidential plane returning from a summit in Berlin on Sunday, where world powers discussed the situation in Libya.
Erdogan said Ankara was intending to honour the invitation. "There would be steps that we will take there. This is something beneficial for us," he said.
According to seismic data processing firm Seismic Geo, there is a high potential for hydrocarbon exploration off Somalia's shores. The country last week passed a new petroleum law to attract foreign investment in the energy sector from giant firms such as ExxonMobil and Shell.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union must be prepared to back up its diplomacy with force as the bloc's foreign ministers discussed sending troops into Libya.
As von der Leyen made her first appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, since taking charge of the EU's executive arm, officials in Brussels were discussing how to ensure a tentative truce in Libya becomes a proper cease-fire.
"The European Union needs hard power but always together with diplomacy and crisis prevention," von der Leyen said Monday in Bloomberg Television interview in Davos. "Only that together is comprehensive security."
Following the US killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Iraqi soil earlier this month, Iraqi lawmakers have called on the government to expel all foreign forces deployed in the country. While some Iraqis support the call, others see the continued presence of the US-led coalition in Iraq as vital to protecting the country against the Islamic State (IS) group and other militia groups. FRANCE 24 reports.
On January 5, the Iraqi parliament passed a resolution calling on the government to expel the US-led international coalition in Iraq, saying the deadly air strike near Baghdad's international airport two days earlier had been an unacceptable breach of Iraqi sovereignty. Not the least because the air strike had also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of the Iran-backed militia group the Popular Mobilization Forces.
Read more .... WNU Editor: I can understand why many Iraqis are leery over a U.S. withdrawal. When the U.S. withdrew the last time, Iraqi sectarianism reared its ugly head that deeply divided the country. This was then followed by ISIS launching their offensive from Syria that resulted in the utter collapse of Iraq's security forces and a war that took two years to defeat the Islamic State.
Fighters offered $2,000 salaries and Turkish nationality as Ankara seeks to bolster interests in Libya.
On Monday, less than 24 hours after world powers agreed to halt arms shipments to Libya's warring sides, men in northern Syria were still signing up to fight for the Turkish-backed government in Tripoli.
"The registration of fighters to go to Libya is continuing until this moment," an Asia Times correspondent in Syria reported Monday afternoon, after visiting one of three recruitment centers in the Turkish-dominated northern countryside of Aleppo.
Approximately 800 Syrian men are currently preparing to go to Libya, an official with Syria's opposition Ministry of Defense told Asia Times on condition of anonymity.
NAIROBI (Reuters) - The world's richest 2,153 people controlled more money than the poorest 4.6 billion combined in 2019, while unpaid or underpaid work by women and girls adds three times more to the global economy each year than the technology industry, Oxfam said on Monday.
The Nairobi-headquartered charity said in a report released ahead of the annual World Economic Forum of political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, that women around the world work 12.5 billion hours combined each day without pay or recognition.
In its "Time to Care" report, Oxfam said it estimated that unpaid care work by women added at least $10.8 trillion a year in value to the world economy - three times more than the tech industry.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump will hold a series of meetings with various world leaders when he heads to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week, the White House said.
Among the leaders he will meet with include Iraqi President Barham Salih, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Swiss Confederation President Simonetta Sommaruga and Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Regional government. Reuters previously reported as well that Trump also intends to meet with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
The downing of a plane showed citizens what's wrong with the Iranian government, but the regime has no plans to change.
When Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers at Tehran's Grand Mosque for the first time in eight years on Friday, Iran's supreme leader described the downing of Ukrainian Airlines Fight 752 by his military as a "bitter accident"—one that enemies abroad were exploiting as an excuse to discredit the Islamic Republic. But the real threat to the regime, which has spent decades trying to cement its rule, is the discontent of the Iranian public. Both the plane crash on January 8 and the cover-up that followed struck at the heart of the grievances that shape Iranians' anger toward and alienation from their government. And if the demise of Flight 752 revealed the government's malign disregard for its own citizens, its relentless suppression of the subsequent protests has only underscored its imperviousness to any meaningful accountability.
* Two intelligence services said that al-Salbi took over from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi * Al-Salbi, who helped found ISIS, brought in brutal Sharia Law in Iraq and Syria * Spies unmasked al-Salbi and paint a picture of extremist similar to al-Baghdadi
The new leader of Islamic State has been revealed as Iraqi Amir Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Mawli al-Salbi.
Two intelligence services said al-Salbi took over from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi after the terrorist leader blew himself up in October.
Al-Salbi, who helped found ISIS, brought in brutal Sharia Law in Iraq and Syria, led the enslavement of the Yazidi and has operated across the world.

Iran appears to have backtracked on its promise to send the flight recorders from a downed Ukranian jet it shot down for overseas analysis — a day after officials said they would be sent to Kiev.
Hassan Rezaeifar, head of the accident investigations unit of Iran's civil aviation authority, was quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency on Sunday (local time) as saying, "the flight recorders from the Ukrainian Boeing are in Iranian hands and we have no plans to send them out".
He said Iran was working to recover the data and cabin recordings, and that it may send the flight recorders — commonly known as black boxes — to Ukraine or France.
WNU Editor: I cannot say that I am surprised that they have decided to not send the black boxes to outside investigators. They cannot been seen losing control of the narrative, especially now with the current unrest in Iran.
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Monday it could quit the global nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if European countries refer it to the U.N. Security Council over a nuclear agreement, a move that would overturn diplomacy in its confrontation with the West.
The 1968 NPT has been the foundation of global nuclear arms control since the Cold War, including a 2015 deal Iran signed with world powers that offered it access to global trade in return for accepting curbs to its atomic program.
The fate of the 2015 pact has been in doubt since U.S. President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of it and reimposed sanctions. Iran has responded by scaling back its commitments, although it says it wants the pact to survive.
Norway's Progress party leader and Finance Minister Siv Jensen today, she had accused the woman as 'using her child as a shield to come back to Norway'
* Prime Minister Erna Solberg said she would endeavour with a minority coalition * ISIS bride, 29, was arrested after flying back to Oslo with two children Saturday * She was repatriated on the grounds her five-year-old is seriously ill * Progress Party leader said 'the cup is now full' and says his party not consulted
Norway's government has collapsed over the decision to allow an ISIS bride to return to the country from Syria with her children.
The populist Progress Party pulled out of Norway's coalition government today after the mother was permitted repatriation so that her gravely ill five-year-old son could receive medical treatment.
The 29-year-old and her two children have been living in the Al-Hol camp in Syria - notorious in Britain as the detention centre which held Shamima Begum.
Violent clashes between police and anti-government protesters gripped sections of Beirut Sunday night, as part of a "week of rage" declared by protesters that has paralyzed much of the Lebanese capital.
Protesters were seen attacking bank branches and smashing the windows of one prominent cell phone company.
Some threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at police, who attempted to disperse protesters with tear gas. As clashes continued, security forces deployed water cannons and rubber bullets.

From left: Trump aides Hogan Gidley and Dan Scavino; McCarthy; and Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night."
When it comes to intelligence, like with so much else, President Donald Trump likes big names. It's this focus on celebrity, headlines, and immediate gratification — versus substance, impact, and consequences — that so often motivates him. Partly because of this, as a senior CIA counterterrorist manager, my team and I often struggled in persuading the president to recognize the most important threats. Now, with the killing of Qassem Soleimani, I worry that while Trump got a big name and lots of headlines, the long-term impact on U.S. strategic interests was not fully considered.
At CIA, I saw this play out more than once. Trump's obsession in focusing resources against Osama bin Laden's son Hamza is one example of the president's preference for a "celebrity" targeted killing versus prioritizing options that could prove better for U.S. security.

A 35-year-old woman trying to enter the country from Wuhan, China, where the virus is thought to have originated, tested positive after being screened for symptoms at Incheon International Airport on Sunday.
"She was immediately separated for treatment in quarantine at a state-designated hospital," said the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). Among the symptoms she displayed were a high body temperature and respiratory difficulties.

Cyprus called Turkey a "pirate state" on Sunday over its attempts to drill for oil and gas off Cypriot waters, one day after the EU issued a warning to Ankara. Turkey, for its part, said the bloc was prejudiced against Turkish Cypriots.
Cyprus, which is has been divided since 1974 into a northern Turkish part and the officially recognized southern Greek part, said Turkey had "provactively ignored" repeated warnings from the European Union to cease its illegal drilling.

MUMBAI: What does the taxman do when the money market dries up and businesses struggle? It tries to figure out a way to inch towards a punishing tax target that the government has set by giving a little breathing space to companies and businesses — the prime taxpayers.Mumbai, which accounts for the highest contribution to income tax in the country, is trying it out.Amid tight liquidity and a tough business environment, tax commissioners in the financial capital decided on Monday to allow "deserving" assessees pay in instalments the amount they are required to fork out after challenging a tax demand order. After receiving a demand order from the assessing officer of the Income Tax (I-T) department, a tax payer has to pay 20% of the demand within a month once the order is challenged before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), the first appellate authority. This amount can now be paid in multiple instalments till end March."However, this will be on a case to case basis and is not part of any rule. Instructions have gone out to commissioners in Mumbai to consider genuine requests from assesses so that don't have to pay the entire 20% at one go. The payments can happen in three or five or six instalments, depending on the case," a senior tax officer told ET.The tax demands pertain to assessment year 2017-18 (or, the financial year 2016-17 when the Narendra Modi government demonetised all Rs 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes). A flurry of notices, raising tax demand, were issued by the I-T department before December 31, 2019 when assessments for FY 2016-17 became time-barred. The department questioned the authenticity of deals that resulted in surge in cash deposits with banks following demonetisation of currency bills. 73464558 "This is a small relief given liquidity positions of assesses. No revenue is being sacrificed," said the official. While tax officials said this might not have been the first time that payments in instalments were permitted, tax professionals felt that the department appeared a little considerate this year — probably due to a sluggish growth in demand. The 20% payment rule on challenging a tax order is in accordance with the guideline of the Central Board of Direct Taxes and not part of a statute. While the ruling on the appeal before the Commissioner of IT (CIT) Appeals may take a long time to come, the 20% payment has to happen soon after a month."Assessees may try to buy some time by first writing to the assessing officer (AO). Once the AO rejects the application, which typically happens immediately, the assessee can move the principal commissioner followed by the chief commissioner. Normally, if an application is pending before a higher authority, the lower authority will take any action. But such applications within the tax administration may help the taxpayer delay the 20% payment by only a few weeks.. While some feel that the department may be offering an instalment mechanism to save time, I feel it is primarily driven by the present business climate," said a tax practitioner.
Mumbai: The markdown in papers of Vodafone Idea by Franklin Templeton, which has led to markto-market losses of 4-6 per cent for investors in schemes that held the paper, has revived worries about the safety of debt mutual fund products. In the last two years, there have been mark to market losses in various debt schemes due to schemes holding paper of IL&FS, DHFL and some ADAG companies. Investors have been hit across categories of mutual funds — be it ultra short term, duration or credit. This has perturbed debt mutual fund investors who are increasingly wary of putting money into these schemes.Small investors, who do not have the skills to research mutual funds themselves or find it unviable to hire financial advisors, would be better off sticking to traditional fixed income products such as bank deposits, PPF and post office deposits. "Retail investors who do not understand the nuances of debt mutual funds would be better off sticking to plan vanilla bank deposits till the environment improves," said Ashish Shanker, head (wealth advisory), Motilal Oswal Wealth Management. 73466307 But investors with a higher tax outgo should invest more of their fixed income corpus in debt mutual funds, said advisors. The investments, however, should be done on the basis of risk appetite."When investing in debt follow the principle of safety first followed by liquidity and capital appreciation.," said Anup Bhaiya, MD, Money Honey Financial services. Debt funds have a portfolio of securities which lowers risk compared to holding a single company security. Investors in the higher tax bracket have preferred debt mutual funds in recent years because of the better tax treatment."For investors who are in the high tax bracket, debt funds are a substitute for fixed deposits with tax arbitrage," said Vishal Dhawan, chief financial planner, Plan Ahead Wealth Managers. If investors hold debt mutual fund schemes for three years, they get the benefit of long-term capital gains with indexation benefits, lowering the tax outgo significantly. ET has compiled debt mutual fund plans for conservative, moderate and high risk investors based on inputs from financial advisor.
BENGALURU| MUMBAI: Online food delivery and restaurant discovery platform Zomato has acquired the Indian operations of Uber Eats, the food delivery business run by Uber, for around $350 million (Rs 2,485 crore), two people in the know of the deal said. The all-stock transaction will give the US-based ride-hailing company about 10% shareholding in Gurgaon-based Zomato, they told ET.Uber Eats will cease to exist as a separate brand locally and users on its platform will be redirected to Zomato's app, said one of the people privy to the details.Zomato will not absorb Uber Eats' team in India. This means around 100 executives will either be reallocated to Uber's other verticals here or laid off.First big move for consolidationZomato and Uber declined to comment when ET contacted them. The transaction, which has been in the works for more than a year, marks the first big consolidation move in the hotly contested and cash-intensive online food-delivery market, led by Swiggy and Zomato. With the acquisition going through, the combined entity of Zomato and Uber Eats India is expected to corner more than a 50-55% market in terms of the number and value of orders, pulling it ahead of Swiggy."The deal is signed and customers are going to be directed away from Uber Eats to Zomato," said one of the people familiar with the matter. Zomato, he said, expects to transition 90% of Uber Eats users onto its platform."For Zomato, buying the distant third player helps it consolidate the market and puts it ahead of its arch-rival Swiggy. It is one less competition for the company to deal with," said the second person."In parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh, Uber Eats has a stronger foothold compared to Zomato with an about 30% market share," an Uber executive, who didn't want to be named, told ET. The acquisition, therefore, will give increased access to Zomato in certain micro-markets, he said. 73466216 The Uber Eats buyout comes on the back of Zomato's latest fundraising led by existing investor Ant Financial, an Alibaba affiliate, which pumped in $150 million at a $3 billion valuation. There had been talks of Uber also participating in the recent funding with primary capital of about $100-200 million, as reported by ET on December 16. However, those talks are on hold, said the two people.Uber which has underperformed the market after going public last year, has been shuttering or downsizing its loss-making units and geographies. With a cash burn of $20 million per month in India, the business was among the low-priority ones for the company. Last year, Uber said in its quarterly results announcement that the Indian food delivery business has been a drag for it.According to regulatory disclosures made in India, Uber had projected an operating loss of Rs 2,197 crore in its food delivery business for the five months through December 2019. This loss was larger than what was expected to be incurred by its core ride-hailing business, which was Rs 1,645 crore according to a valuation report prepared by KPMG affiliate BSR and released in November.Uber Eats has been on the block for a year. In February last year, Uber had come close to selling the business to Swiggy but the deal fell through, as reported by ET.Over the last six months, Uber chief Dara Khosrowshahi has been flagging analysts during quarterly calls about India's food delivery market being very competitive and admitted to being the number three player in the space. In fact, since early last year, the company had started its cutbacks. It had halved its annual cash allocation to the food-delivery business in India to $90-120 million, which took a direct impact on the order numbers. At the same time, Uber's India rival Ola too had pulled its focus away from its food-delivery business, Foodpanda, and started to sell private brands on marketplaces.Uber entered the food delivery business in 2017 when Swiggy and Zomato had already roped in major restaurants and chains in exclusive partnerships. Uber relied heavily on discounting to acquire and retain users. While it has been able to establish market leadership in some small towns and cities, the two larger food delivery companies continued to fight for market leadership.
NEW DELHI: The government is considering a new formula for payments to creditors of distressed companies resolved through the insolvency and bankruptcy law, which would give a better deal to unsecured lenders and operational creditors. There are two options under consideration, a government official told ET.Under one of the plans, the resolution amount would be split into two parts – liquidation amount set by the valuers before the resolution is started, and anything in excess of this amount.Liquidation amount would be distributed to company's creditors in accordance with the "waterfall" mechanism set out in Section 53 of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, as per the plan. 73450839 Under this mechanism, all claims of secured financial creditors must be fully paid before payments are made to unsecured financial creditors, who must in turn be fully paid before operational creditors.Any amount in excess of the liquidation value would be split on a pro-rata basis among all creditors – secured, unsecured and operational. The government has also proposed this formula for distribution of proceeds from the resolution of debt-ridden Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Group (IL&FS)."One formula is that everyone has contributed to enterprise value, so up to liquidation value, secured creditors will have the first claim. Till liquidation value, Section 53 (waterfall mechanism) will apply. On the balance, everyone has a claim," said a government official. The second formula being considered is to set aside a fixed proportion of 5% or 10% of sale proceeds for operational creditors. The government is looking at the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), which is set to decide on the formula proposed by the government for distribution of proceeds from the sale of IL&FS group entities, before finally taking a call.IL&FS is not formally under IBC resolution but the process is being overseen by the NCLAT."We are awaiting judgement in the IL&FS case," said the official.Experts however point out that while the move may help protect the interest of operational creditors, which are often small businesses, it may push financial creditors to opt for other options for recovery."It is important to protect the interest of operational creditors because they are very vulnerable, smaller in size and not as capable of protecting their interests but the hurdle is that because the decision making remains with secured lenders, they may try to explore other options for resolution or push the company towards liquidation," said Major Kumar, partner at law firm Corporate Professionals.
By Swansy AfonsoIndia's ambition of becoming a global hub for making electric vehicles faces one major hurdle: its lack of access to lithium.Home to some of the most polluted cities on the planet, the South Asian nation is pivoting toward new-energy vehicles to clean up its toxic air. But with meager resources of lithium, the mineral essential to make batteries for electric vehicles, it is having to scour for resources overseas.India's EV production will rely on imports from China of lithium chemicals used to make cathodes and battery cells, according to Jasmeet Singh Kalsi, director at Manikaran Power Ltd., which is exploring setting up India's first lithium refinery. "China has a thriving lithium chemical, battery cathode, battery cell and EV supply chain. India has none."Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration unveiled a slew of measures in 2019 to promote the clean-energy vehicles, including a $1.4 billion plan to make India a manufacturing hub for EVs and cutting taxes to spur purchases. While electric cars in India remain a small segment, with an estimated 3,000 sold in 2018 compared with the 3.4 million fossil fuel-powered cars in the same year, the nation is forecast become the fourth-largest market for EVs by 2040, when the segment will comprise nearly a third of all vehicles sales, according to BloombergNEF.Import RelianceSeveral plans are under way to build lithium-ion battery factories in India. Meanwhile, China -- the largest electric vehicle market in the world -- is dominant in the battery supply chain. Around three-quarters of battery cell manufacturing capacity is in China, and Chinese companies have unparalleled control of required domestic and foreign battery raw materials and processing facilities, according to BNEF."Indian companies have been involved in trying to prospect for stakes in overseas resources, and possibly on-shoring more raw materials production capacity in India," said Sophie Lu, head of metals and mining for BloombergNEF. "But there are very little synergies right now because further up the value chain, battery components manufacturing capacity does not seem to be planned extensively for India."A joint venture called Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. has been formed between three state-run companies -- National Aluminium Co., Hindustan Copper Ltd. and Mineral Exploration Corp. -- to acquire lithium and cobalt mines overseas. Amara Raja Batteries Ltd., the country's second-biggest traditional battery maker by value, will build a lithium-ion assembly plant, while Suzuki Motor Corp. along with Toshiba Corp. and Denso Corp. is setting up a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant.Manikaran signed an agreement with Australia's Neometals in June to jointly fund the evaluation of developing a lithium refinery in India with a capacity of 10,000 tons to 15,000 tons of the finished product. That capacity falls short of India's projected requirement of 200,000 tons of lithium hydroxide by 2030, Kalsi said.Electric vehicles are "slowly going to take off, not with the speed the government perceives it to be, but going ahead the market is going to get pretty huge," he said.
Mumbai: Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have moved the Supreme Court in a bid to delay payments that are due Thursday. Tata Teleservices has also done so, said people with knowledge of the matter. The operators want to be allowed to negotiate conditions and schedules for payment of statutory dues with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), according to their petitions.Vodafone Idea told the court that if no relief is forthcoming, it will have to shut."The company does not have any other resource available for the purpose of this payment," Vodafone Idea said in its plea, which ET has seen. "If a suitable and appropriate arrangement is not made available, it will lead to immediate closure of one of the oldest and largest telecom companies in India."The 'modification' applications were filed on Monday after the Supreme Court last week rejected the pleas of the three phone companies to review the October 24 verdict that widened the definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR). That left the three companies facing more than Rs 1.02 lakh crore in additional licence fees, spectrum usage charges (SUC), penalties and interest.Telcos Seek Urgent Hearing TodayThe court's supplementary order had stipulated that the AGR-related dues need to be paid by January 23. The phone companies have asked the apex court for an urgent hearing on Tuesday.Vodafone Idea was under "huge financial stress and in no position to make either upfront payments of the amounts due or provide any financial bank guarantees to securitise the amounts due," it said. "Any coercive order for immediate payments etc. could be against the interest of thousands of employees, multiple banks and institutions and all connected stakeholders."The company said the investments by promoters had dwindled."The value of Rs 1,90,000 crore of equity investments by promoters is less than Rs 10,500 crore currently, with virtually no prospect of recovery," it said.73465749 Vodafone Idea said it's not getting much support from banks."Even banks and financial institutions do not have enough security to lend monies to the appellant for payment to the DoT to comply with the orders of the court," stated the application.'COMPLEX CALCULATIONS' Bharti Airtel said the calculations that need to be made are "complex" and cannot be done within the 90 days stipulated by the court. This will "require further interaction with the respondent as it covers licences across 22 circles and a period of over 15 years and post submission of the same to the respondents, the parties will have to reconcile all these calculations," Bharti Airtel said in its modification application that was seen by ET .Both telcos highlighted the impact on their subscribers and employees. Vodafone Idea also said its closure will see DoT losing out on spectrum dues. The case was not mentioned in the cause list for Tuesday and the petitioners plan to mention the matter and its urgency before the bench on Tuesday, said one of the persons cited above. If the court accepts the pleas for modification, the next step will be up to the DoT, which has the power to extend the payment deadline."With few days left for the deadline, there are lots of calculations that are yet to be done," said a legal source aware of the developments. "It is a mammoth task, even they (DoT) agree. There are many issues which need to be clarified and for that telcos need more time."Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Tata Teleservices did not respond to ET's queries.Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel face statutory dues of Rs 53,039 crore and Rs 35,586 crore, respectively. Tata Teleservices, which has sold its consumer mobility business to Bharti Airtel, faces dues of Rs 13,823 crore. While Bharti Airtel has the cushion of $3 billion it just raised through qualified institutional placements and bond sales, Tata Teleservices could potentially rely on parent Tata Sons for support. Vodafone Idea has said previously that it would be hard pressed to carry on without some relief. It may, however, offer to pay about Rs 4,000 crore to avoid the tag of defaulter, ET reported on its January 18 edition.Still, investors reposed faith in the stocks. Vodafone Idea closed at Rs 4.86, up 7.8% on the BSE Monday. Bharti Airtel closed at Rs 509.25, up by 1.9%. Tata Teleservices closed at Rs 2.62, up 1.2%.Apart from these three, 12 other companies in the telecom business need to pay more than Rs 1.47 lakh crore to the government by January 23. Licence fees and SUC are calculated on the basis of AGR.OTHER OPTIONSIf the latest appeals are rejected, the next step that the phone companies could take is filing a curative petition that will highlight the blow to employees and economic growth if they don't get relief and the sector is reduced to a duopoly of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm. Some non-telcos with telecom licences, including public sector units such as GAIL India, Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd (PGCIL) and Oil India, have been served demand notices totalling over Rs3 lakh crore. They are also likely to file separate review petitions. The DoT has sent a demand notice for Rs 48,000 crore to Oil India against AGR dues, which include interest and penalties. The public sector unit, which uses an optic fibre network for internal communications, will contest DoT's demands in the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT)."We have received a demand notice for paying payments by January 23. We plan to challenge it in TDSAT," Oil India chairman and managing director Sushil Chandra Mishra said in New Delhi. This follows the notice sent to gas utility GAIL, from which the telecom department has sought Rs 1.72 lakh crore.Prior to this, state-owned RailTel Corp. had moved the Supreme Court, seeking a modification or a clarification to the effect that the AGR order pertains only to Access Service Provider licence holders such as telcos, not to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and National Long Distance (NLD) service provider licence holders such as the state-run company.Mahesh Agrawal of Agrawal and Associates represents Vodafone Idea while Harsh Kaushik and Manali Singhal represent Airtel and Tata Teleservices.
ET Intelligence Group: For the less keenly tracked small-and midcap companies, a change in promoter equity is often considered the most accurate barometer of immediate stock and operating performance. Promoters are among the first to know the inflection points in their own businesses. So increases in promoter equity are generally considered to point to 'good times' for a company. As minority investors, it is time to add such quality midcaps and smallcaps, therefore.ETIG presents a list of five such companies. Investors, however, must do their own homework before punching in 'buy' orders.RAYMONDIn November, the textile company announced the demerger of its lifestyle business, which will now house the top brands. This is expected to unlock value for investors. Furthermore, the management began a property venture on its land parcel in Thane, a sought-after Mumbai suburb. This business should generate ?1,100 crore in net profit over the next five years. Analysts believe the combined value of the two businesses is ?950 per share, while the current stock price is ?689.SASKEN TECHNOLOGIESThe Bengaluru-based digital services and products provider bought back shares in the December quarter at ?825 apiece, 25 per cent higher than the current market price, but the promoters did not tender their shares. While the management has been guiding strong revenue growth, it is yet to show any improvement. In the September quarter, the company reported revenue decline of 9 per cent sequentially after its biggest client sold a part of the business. The management expects to make up for this loss in the second half. The decision by promoters to skip the buyback points to a likely turnaround.VOLTAMP TRANSFORMERThe transformer company reported 3 per cent year-on-year revenue growth in the September quarter due to weak execution through the monsoon months, although order book expanded 60 per cent. Analysts expect revenue to grow 20 per cent for the next two years, boosting operating leverage and margins. It reported EBIDTA margin of nearly 11 per cent in the first half of FY20. The stock trades at a priceearnings (P/E) multiple of 11.BAYER CROPSCIENCEThe performance of the agriculture and pharma products company has been lacklustre in the first half, with a mere 2 per cent growth in sales. But the management has been working on a restructuring plan that includes integration of the Monsanto team, which would eventually lead to cost reduction and renewed marketing strategy. The multinational company has already introduced stricter sales policies with an incentive structure to make its products more attractive to distributors and farmers.GREAVES COTTONThe auto ancillary company acquired 100 per cent of Ampere, an EV (twowheeler) maker. The promoters raised stake notwithstanding the fall in the core operations in the September quarter, indicating that they are bullish on the prospects of the newly acquired company and the future of e-mobility. 73465092
Foreign investors are more concerned about the specific numbers concerning the broader macroeconomy and corporate earnings than about other variables that the domestic Indian investor base or the market watchers may be concerned about, says Manishi Raychaudhuri, Asia Pacific Equity Strategist, BNP Paribas in an interview with ETMarkets.com.What is your stance on the Indian market vis-a-vis the Asian market and why? In our Asia ex-Japan model portfolio, we are currently overweight India. It may appear surprising in the context of the continuing economic slowdown in India but stock selection is relatively easier in India. There is a pretty wide universe of companies which generate excess returns routinely. That means return on equities is higher than cost of equities and these companies are strewn across a wide range of sectors like consumer discretionaries, consumer staples, private sector banks. Even IT companies have been staging recovery of late. In other words, foreign investors have a much wider canvas to choose from which is reaffirmed in the trend that we see in terms of foreign flows. Whenever it recovers in Emerging Markets, India is one of the key beneficiaries. While markets have touched record highs, the economy is at multi-quarter low and earnings are still illusive. How would you explain it?We have seen a liquidity-driven rally. Earnings growth estimates for FY20 kept on drifting down over the year and as a consequence, valuations for India have actually moved up as the market rallied. That said, I must also point out that there was a wide divergence in valuations across different classes of stocks. Everyone looks at the top tier high quality stocks. They are expensive at this point of time but the foreign institutional investors are still attracted to them not just because of their high quality but also the relative stability in their earnings estimates and the liquidity that they offer. If one goes down the top tier stocks to the midcap and small cap stocks, there is a degree of divergence even within those classes. The relatively high quality midcap stocks are way more expensive than the second and third tier ones. We think that while the market may appear expensive when one looks at headline valuations, it does offer stock picking opportunities and it would be possible to outperform the broader market with careful stock selection. Is it fair to say that 2020 would be a year of midcaps and smallcaps?I would hesitate to paint a broad brush picture saying that okay it would be a year of midcaps because within the midcap universe or even within the smallcap universe, there is a divergence in terms of quality and valuation. One would have to be selective in terms of stocks. It really would be a stock pickers' market. When do you think earnings recovery will come by and what would lead earnings recovery in India? There are a few macroeconomic factors that need to fall in place. Currently earnings growth in India is being predominantly led by financials, particularly the private sector banks and insurance and a few companies in the consumer staples and consumer proxy areas. We need to see a bit of divergence and broadbasing of that universe before we see a sustained earnings estimate recovery. One would have to see some degree of recovery in the industrial space which would happen once we begin to see a sustainable recovery in capacity utilisation which would in turn be triggered by a demand recovery. Now, obviously these are difficult to achieve in the near term and I do not think there is any magic bullet that is available either for the government or for the central bank. I would think that one would have to wait for maybe the second half of FY21 to see some of these variables fall in place. When would the economy recover from here and what would lead the recovery going ahead? If I look back at the key economic components, private consumption and investments in government consumption, the first attempt on the part of policymakers should be to improve private consumption or in other words consumption demand and that in turn can lead to private investments improving at a later date. It would mean some degree of fiscal support which unfortunately the government does not have at this point of time. So a more sustainable economic recovery, from pure base effect, it would take another two to three quarters at least. So, we come back to that same old equation that we can expect to see some degree of stabilisation in the second half of FY2021.Which are the sectors which could spew up compounders from here on?The sectors which have possibly spawned the most compounders in India are consumer staples, consumer discretionaries, private sector banks and IT services. These are the four sectors where you find most of them. Our ways to identify them are simply to look at excess return generation or in other words the companies that generate a return on equity higher than cost of equity on a sustained basis, over 15 to 20 years or so. The majority of these excess return generators fall into these sectors that I mentioned just now. Indian companies historically have been very careful. One could even use the word stingy about raising capital and investing because India was a capital starved economy historically and that is why Indian companies routinely generate higher ROE and ROCE than rest of the emerging markets. That is the characteristic which has stood the Indian market in good stead and also engendered FII interest on a sustained basis. What are your expectations from the Budget? The wish list would be basically that I am not really looking at an absolute number when it comes to fiscal deficit. I would rather be concerned about what goes inside the fiscal deficit or fiscal spending. I would look carefully at whether the measures are designed to support or invigorate private consumption. I would try to look at some of the structural ways of resource raising, structural in sustainable ways. If one gets a credible impression of the government trying to raise resources from either divestments or asset sales, that would clearly be a positive. One would also look for credible assumptions on tax revenue growth or broader GDP growth. In a nutshell, it is not just the headline numbers that we would look at, we would try to see what are the assumptions that have given rise to those headline numbers. We had Roubini the other day saying that a CAA protests have worried foreign investors. What are you hearing from your clients? In our conversations with our foreign investors, most of the questions are actually centred around the economy, corporate earnings to be more specific. What are the implications of the measures that the government or the central bank can take on these? In a nutshell, foreign investors at this point of time are more concerned about the specific numbers concerning the broader macroeconomy and corporate earnings than about other variables that the domestic Indian investor base or the market watchers may be concerned about.
SAN FRANCISCO: Joining Microsoft President Brad Smith and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday called for new regulations for Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying the only question now is how to approach it.Although new regulation is needed, "a cautious approach is required that might not see significant controls placed on AI," Pichai who was last month took over as the CEO of Alphabet, Google's parent company, in an editorial piece in The Financial Times."There is no question in my mind that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated. It is too important not to. The only question is how to approach it"."Companies such as ours cannot just build promising new technology and let market forces decide how it will be used. It is equally incumbent on us to make sure that technology is harnessed for good and available to everyone," Pichai wrote.According to CNET, the timing of the editorial coincides with a big push from Google to reveal some of the results of its own work in AI and bring tools it has developed out into the world. The Alphabet CEO stressed that "international alignment will be critical to making global standards work" on AI.We need to take a "principled approach to applying AI, said the company, while offering Google's "expertise, experience and tools.""We need to be clear-eyed about what could go wrong," he said. His comments come as lawmakers and governments globally are considering to limit the use of AI in fields such as face recognition system - an issue close to Microsoft President Brad Smith's heart who has often criticized the technology, urging governments to enact legislation regarding the technology."Unless we act, we risk waking up five years from now to find that facial recognition services have spread in ways that exacerbate societal issues," said Smith.Advanced AI which is beyond chat bots will soon be used to manipulate social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned recently. In his famous debate with former Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma, Musk entered into a lassic argument over the capabilities of emerging technologies like AI.Musk said that computers will one day surpass humans in "every single way". He has predicted that a single company that develops "God-like super intelligence" might achieve world domination. If not regulated or controlled soon, AI could become an "immortal dictator" and there will be no escape for humans, the SpaceX CEO had warned.

You want to change the world, but you aren't sure where to start. First and foremost, remember that changing the world can mean so many different things. You might change the world in one big way, or you might do many small things. You'll need to think big, but manage your expectations. Most importantly: find a cause and get started.
Understand what's wrong. Read the news and magazines. Ask questions. Broaden your awareness as far as you can. The world is a wide and wondrous place, and you won't be able to change much if you don't understand what's going on out there.
Don't just read your local news – read news from other cities, other states, other countries. Read opinions and accounts from people who live across the world.
Watch documentaries and TED Talks.[1] Listen to lectures. Focus on specific subject. Try to learn as much as you can.
Identify specific problems. It is one thing to say that you want to change the world because you sense an imbalance. It is another to say: There is war in Palestine; there is a drought in California; there are people dying in refugee camps in central Africa; there are rainforests being burned in Brazil; there are entire island nations in the Indian Ocean that are being evacuated due to rising sea levels. There is a lot to change!
See the world. Travel to foreign lands, if you can, and speak to locals about the way that they live. Visit people in your community who live differently than you – people who make more or less money; who are younger or older; who come from a different ethnic or religious background. Use the Internet to supplement and share your explorations. Try to drink in as much of this planet as you can. Learn to love it.
You don't need to have a lot of money to see the world. Think about how much you can experience just by walking down the block, or visiting a neighboring city. If you truly want to travel, you can find a way.
Try to learn from every experience. When you visit a foreign country, don't cut yourself off from the culture. Immerse yourself!
If the thought of travel for travel's sake seems too hedonistic, think about taking some sort of service trip. Volunteer to build houses or protect an ecosystem; join the Peace Corps, Doctors Without Borders, or another international aid organization; WWOOF and help out local farmers in a work/trade situation. Find a way to give back!
Consider what you want to change. Try to pick out the issues that resonate most with you. Ask yourself what feels important. Perhaps you want to spend your life battling climate change, or purging slavery from the world, or saving a species from the brink of extinction. You might change the world in one big way, and you might change it in many small ways.
There are many ways to change the world. You can change a rough stone to precious diamond.Just you have to find the way.
Ask yourself what it means to change the world. It is a grand intention, to be sure, and you can certainly find a way to make a difference if you have the will and means to do so. However, it's important to remember that "changing the world" usually doesn't mean "fixing everything about the world." It typically means something more like, "encountering a problem and fixing that problem."
Know that change doesn't come overnight. Even the quickest and most decisive revolutions take months or years of groundwork.Patience brings Reward. Don't expect to change the world with one big, heroic act. Try to live your values each day, even if you don't see much appreciable change on a day-to-day level. Work hard and don't give up.Be Patient
Even if your cumulative actions don't change the world, you'll be able to say that you lived a life you're proud of. You might inspire or teach others by example. You may find that change occurs when you least expect it.
Don't lose sight of your ideals. Be patient and intentional – but not too patient. Set realistic goals for yourself, but try not to lose your fire in the details. Your desire to change the world is powerful as long as it burns within you.
Think about your natural gifts. There is a quote, often (dubiously) attributed to Pablo Picasso: "The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give it away."[2] Consider what you love doing: a thing that sets you afire with passion, that consumes you, that holds your focus for hours at the hint of a spark. Do that thing, even if no one else is doing it. Find a way to share it with the world.[3]
Consider all the various ways that people have changed the world. Nelson Mandela changed the world by combating Apartheid; Henry Ford by popularizing the automobile; Steve Jobs changing personal computers; Gutenberg by inventing the printing press; Marco Polo by traveling widely and connecting cultures. You can draw inspiration from someone else, or you can forge your own way.
Read about people who have changed the world. Seek inspiration in their stories. These people can be almost anyone that you admire: not just Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Steve Jobs, Jr., but Bill Gates, Abraham Lincoln, or Bill McKibben.
Specify your dreams. Try to get to the root of the fantasy in your head. What does it really look like, in your mind's eye, to "change the world?" Is it writing a book, patenting an invention, organizing people, saving a species? There are so many ways to make a difference, on myriad magnitudes. No doubt, some of these avenues will catch your fancy more than others.
Remember that you don't need to do it alone. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his marches and speeches with the help of hordes of passionate activists. JFK didn't avert the Cuban Missile Crisis single-handedly – he did so with a brilliant board of ministers and advisers. John Lennon may never have helped so many people "Imagine" without the rest of the Beatles. Live passionately and create gravity around your values. As you begin to gather momentum, you may draw other passionate people into your orbit.
Organize a club or a discussion group. Gather some of your friends to volunteer with you. Share your thoughts on social media and try to spread the word. Consider that things might happen much more quickly if there are others involved.
Libraries will often let you use their facilities for free to start harmless, non-controversial groups. If you can't do that, check out the price for the community building rental. Or: simply host meetings in your home!
Try joining an existing organization. Volunteer for a nonprofit, or donate to a charity, or apply for a service program. If you don't know where to start, there are a lot of good people already out there making difference.
Volunteer or donate to charity. It's not just about working in a soup kitchen or visiting the old folks' home. Today anyone can volunteer to do anything![4] Contact the local volunteer organisations in your area and discover a cause that you feel passionate about. Start a petition, donate money, support a charity, fundraise, or be an advocate.[5]
Don't donate to the first charity you come across. There are huge differences in efficiency. If you want to make sure that your money is used to save as many lives as possible, do check out givewell.org. Picking one of their most recommended charities is quick and easy, but you can also read up on why they chose those if you're interested. Other possible sites are BBB Start With Trust or Charity Navigator.
Buy a wristband. They are all the rage in Hollywood, with lots of celebrities sporting the most recent fashion accessory—a charity wristband. Not only do they look cool, they're cheap and a great way to do your bit for your favorite cause.
If you want to help the developing world, the best charities are ones which help people to help themselves. These do the most good by enabling communities to strengthen and improve themselves. Examples of charities that do work like this are Heifer International, Kiva, or Free the Children. Education charities, like One Laptop Per Child, are also good.
Shop carefully. Businesses are some of the most important and influential organizations in the world today. They are involved with, or in some way influence, almost any issue you can think of and can sometimes be even more influential than governments in those issues. Luckily, you have opportunities every day to encourage businesses to do the right thing. Every time you buy something, you are giving your approval for whatever process was involved in its production. The next time you're in the grocery store, take an extra look at the labels.
Take a close look at your options. Ask yourself questions: "Do I want to support this type of business?" "Are the farmers or factory workers that made this treated well?" "Is this product traded fairly?" "Is it healthy?" "Is it good for the environment?" "Does the sale of this product help support an oppressive political regime?"
Take part in blood donations. Many countries (especially Australia, Britain, Canada, and the United States) frequently experience record lows of blood stores and desperately need more people to donate. It only takes about half an hour and doesn't hurt (much!).[6] Visit Red Cross or United Blood Services for more information.[7]
Become an advocate. Speak up about injustices in the world and get your friends involved, too. Organize fundraisers to help raise money for your chosen charity or cause. If you can't raise money, add your voice to those already campaigning to end poverty, war, injustice, sexism, racism, or corruption in the world. Activism can start at any age. Craig Kielburger was twelve years old when he became an activist for child labour rights. He went on, with his brother, to start Free the Children and Me to We.
Become an organ donor. You won't need your organs when you are dead, so why not give them to someone who can use them? Save the lives of up to eight people by placing yourself on the organ donors' register in your country.[8] Talk about the decision with your family and let them know your wishes.
Recycle. It's not something only hippies do! Anyone can recycle, and these days just about anything can be recycled—from newspapers and plastic, to computers and old mobile (cell) phones. Encourage your school or workplace to recycle and to use recycled products.[9]
Stop driving everywhere! You probably already know that vehicle emissions are bad for the planet. What you may not know is how you can reduce your emissions: Start walking to nearby places. Use public transportation whenever possible. You can also do things like riding a bike to work instead of taking a car. If you need to use a car, consider purchasing one which uses a mix of electricity (a renewable energy source) and gas or only electricity.[10]
Reduce your impact on the planet. Reduce your harmful impact on the planet by reusing items and materials when you can, using green products, buying local food and items (supporting your local economy), and conserving resources such as water.[11] This will help protect the planet and provide a healthy environment for all people who will live on after us.[12]
Help others to do the same by educating them about how they can reduce their impact on the planet. Remember: don't be preachy or self-righteous. You're doing this to help the planet, not so you can be smarter or better than your neighbour.
Minimize your water usage. Did you know that there will probably be a major water crisis in our lifetimes? The problem is that we consume and use water faster than we can clean old and new water. Help alleviate this problem by taking shorter showers, being careful when washing dishes, not leaving the water running when you brush your teeth, and generally paying attention to how you use water.[13]
Another thing to avoid is watering your lawn in the summer. Collect and use gray water for this purpose, as using clean drinking water to water grass is very wasteful.
Support animal welfare. All life should be appreciated if humanity is to step forward in our pursuit for a better society. Spend time supporting animal rights, volunteer at your local shelter, or donate to an organization for animal welfare. Keep in mind that most animal suffering happens to farm animals, not pets. Most people forget this, since they can't see the animals they eat. Consider going vegetarian - it's healthier, helps the environment, reduces animal suffering and might actually be cheaper! If you can't imagine being vegetarian, eating less meat also works. Remember, it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing decision.[14]
However, do your research before donating to organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS for short), PETA, or other big-name corporations; sometimes a large percentage of the money will not go to the animals. A great site for comparing charities is http://www.animalcharityevaluators.org/
Don't buy animal food for donations. Donating your money directly to the shelter is much better, because the shelter can get food cheaper in bulk and it's hard to plan for donated goods. Fostering an animal for a short period of time is another great way to show your support of animals, and it costs little to no money to do!
Pay it forward.[15] Seen the movie? Well, just like Haley Joel Osment, you can help others by "paying it forward." Simply do something nice for 3 people (or, preferably, more and with no limit) without being asked, and in return, tell them to do the same to 3 more people. And so on and so on. Imagine if everyone followed through with this and what kind of world it would be![16]
Don't intentionally hurt others. Imagine a society where every single person did not look to harm another individual. You wouldn't have to lock your doors at night and self-defense would be a thing of the past. You may think one person cannot make a difference. The whole world is just seven billion individuals. Just think, you may inspire someone to be like you and start a chain reaction!
Laugh and smile! Many believe that laughter is the best medicine you can have.[17] Not only that, but people who are happy are often more healthy and are lots more fun to be around![18] Sharing a smile and a laugh with someone is easy, completely free, and may just make someone's day! When your happiness is contributing to the happiness and well-being of other people and the planet, that's called sustainable happiness!
Don't limit yourself to this article. If you think of another way to change the world: do it!
Remember, there are may problems that most people don't know about because mainstream news doesn't talk about them. There are still people suffering long after the media stops covering an incident. In Haiti, for instance, many are still left homeless from the January 2010 earthquake.
Visit your Chamber of Commerce. Ask about local nonprofit organizations to volunteer or donate to.
Don't forget about individuals. Helping an elderly woman cross the street, holding a door open, and smiling are simple ways you can encourage someone to do the same. Ultimately, you might make the world a happier place through a chain of good intentions.
Be educated about your cause. If someone asks you a question, you want to know the answer.
Don't get too obsessed. If you neglect yourself for your cause, you might prevent yourself from participating in future events.
Make sure when you donate, you know exactly where the money is going. Ascertain that your information will remain private. There are a lot of scams out there.
Green tea has anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and antioxidant properties.[1] This means that green tea may be beneficial for a wide-range of skin problems and for your skin's general health. You can easily make a toner using freshly brewed green tea to gain these benefits. Add optional ingredients to customize your toner and use it twice daily for best results.
Add 1 green tea bag or 1 teaspoon (5 g) of loose green tea to a mug. Use plain green tea and unwrap the bag. Then, place the bag into the mug. If you're using loose leaf tea, measure out the tea and add it directly to the mug.[2]
You may use regular or organic green tea, if desired.
Pour of boiling water over the tea. Bring the water to a boil in a tea kettle or in the microwave in a microwave safe container. Then, pour the water over the tea.[3]
You may use filtered water or tap water.
Steep the tea for 3 to 5 minutes. Stir the tea bag or leaves around after you first add the water, and then allow the tea to sit undisturbed for the rest of the steeping time.[4]
If needed, you may steep the tea for up to 10 minutes. Since you won't be drinking it, you don't have to worry about it becoming bitter.
Transfer the tea to an air-tight container that can hold . If you are using loose green tea leaves, pour the tea through a strainer or coffee filter directly into an air-tight container. If you used a teabag, grasp the string and pull out the teabag. Then, pour the liquid into your container.[5]
If you plan to add other ingredients, use an airtight container than can hold or more.
You may also use a small, clean spray bottle to store the green tea toner.
Add of lemon juice for skin-brightening benefits. Purchase a fresh lemon in a grocery store, cut it in half, and squeeze the juice from it for fresh-squeeze lemon juice. You can also find containers of preserved lemon juice in small plastic bottles in the produce section of many grocery stores, but fresh lemon juice is best. Measure out the lemon juice and add it directly to the container with your green tea. Then, place the lid or cap on the container and shake well to combine the ingredients.[6]
Lemon juice helps to brighten your skin tone, so this may be a good option if your skin has been looking dull or if you have age spots.
Pour in of apple cider vinegar for pH balancing effects. You can purchase apple cider vinegar in a grocery store or online. Stir the apple cider vinegar in with the green tea, and then replace the lid on the container.[7]
Use regular or raw apple cider vinegar if you prefer.
Apple cider vinegar will help to balance the pH of your skin and gently exfoliate it as well.
Stir in of honey for anti-aging benefits. Make sure to add the honey while the tea is still warm or it may not blend well. You can use regular honey or a special honey, such as manuka honey, for extra anti-aging benefits. Keep stirring until the honey is completely dissolved in the green tea.[8]
Mix in of witch hazel for a stronger astringent. Pour the witch hazel into the jar or spray bottle, replace the cap, and shake the container to combine the ingredients. Witch hazel helps to cleanse your pores and balance the pH of your skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, so it may help to reduce any redness or puffiness in your face.[9]
You can purchase witch hazel in the first aid section of most drug and grocery stores.
Keep in mind that some types of witch hazel contain alcohol, which can dry out your skin. Check the labels on any witch hazel you purchase to ensure that it's alcohol-free.
Add 3-5 drops of vitamin E oil to soothe irritated skin. You can purchase vitamin E oil or vitamin E filled capsules in the supplements section of a grocery store. Add the drops or break open a capsule and add it to the container or spray bottle. Replace the lid and shake well before using.[10]
This will add moisturizing properties to the toner, so it's a good option if your skin is dry or sensitive.
Include up to 30 drops of tea tree oil for a natural acne treatment. You can purchase tea tree oil in the beauty supply section of many grocery stores or online. Add the drops and then replace the lid on the jar or spray bottle. Shake well to combine the ingredients.[11]
Tea tree oil is a potent ingredient for acne-prone skin.
Don't use more than the recommended number of drops as this may irritate your skin.
Mix in up to 30 drops of lavender oil for a relaxing scent. Purchase lavender essential oil in a grocery store or online. Add the desired amount of drops to the container, but don't exceed 30 drops as too much of the oil can irritate your skin. Then, replace the lid and shake well.[12]
Lavender has a calming scent, so this might be a good option to make your facial cleansing routine more relaxing.
Allow the green tea to cool before using it. The tea will be very hot right after you brew it. Allow it to sit at room temperature for 1 hour to ensure that it is no longer hot. To speed up the cooling process, place the container into the refrigerator. It's safe to use once it is lukewarm or cool.
Store your toner in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. The toner will keep longer if you keep it cold, so place the container in your refrigerator. Keeping the toner chilled will also make it feel more refreshing when you use it.[13]
If you don't want to keep your toner in the refrigerator, plan to make a new batch once every 3 days.
Wash your face before applying the toner. Wet your face with warm water and work a gentle cleanser around your skin with your fingertips. Then, rinse your face thoroughly and pat it dry with a clean, dry towel.
Apply your homemade green tea toner with a cotton ball or spray bottle. If you transferred the toner to a jar or other air-tight container, dip a cotton ball into it and rub the wet cotton ball across your face. Rub the green tea all over your face except for your eyelids. If you are using a spray bottle, just close your eyes and spritz your cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin with the green tea toner.[14]
Repeat this twice daily after washing your face.
Moisturize your skin as usual after applying the green tea toner. Make sure to apply facial lotion to your skin immediately after using the toner, while your skin is still a little damp. This will help to lock in moisture and make your skin feel soft and supple.[15]
Keep in mind that toner is not a substitute for moisturizer, even if you added vitamin E oil to it.
If your friend is dealing with a breakup, the death of a loved one, or any other hard time, you probably want to do whatever you can to help. While there's nothing you can do or say to make the pain go away, you can be there for your friend and offer plenty of support. Regardless of your friend's situation, being a good friend can go a long way in helping heal a broken heart.
Encourage grieving. Your friend needs to deal with their emotions in order to get through this tough time, so encourage them to tackle them head-on. Remind them that they will never feel better if they are in denial about what has happened or ignore how they are feeling about it.[1]
Let them know it's okay to cry. Tears can help them heal!
If you feel like your friend is bottling their emotions up inside, explain to them that doing so can make it harder to get past the hurt.
The stages of grief typically include sadness, shock, remorse, withdrawal, and acceptance. Don't be too alarmed if your friend experiences all of these, or if they go away and then come back.[2]
Everyone grieves differently, so try not to be judgmental of your friend's process. If, however, they seem to be paralyzed by their grief and do not seem to be getting any better, consider suggesting that they see a grief counselor.[3]
If your friend has lost someone close to them, it may help them grieve if you help them plan a memorial of some kind.[4]
Listen. Sharing their feelings will help your friend heal their broken heart, so make sure they know you are there to listen to them whenever they need you. Be a good listener and let your friend talk for as long as they want.[5]
Be sure to tell your friend that you are willing to listen. They may really want to talk, but be worried about burdening you.
Reach out to your friend as soon as you hear about what happened and let them know you're thinking about them. You can let them know then that you are willing to listen, but don't take offense if they don't feel like talking yet.
Avoid giving advice unless your friend asks for it. Your friend may just feel like venting.[6]
If your friend doesn't want to talk, encourage them to write their thoughts down in a journal.
It's okay to ask questions about what happened, especially if you are close friends. Doing so will help you understand what they are going through and how you can help.[7]
Be empathetic. Let your friend know that you care about their feelings and want to help them through this tough time. Instead of passing judgment, simply acknowledge their pain and tell them you are sorry that they have to experience it.
Always express simple condolences by saying something like, "I'm sorry for your loss."[8]
If your friend is going through a breakup, don't feel like you need to say anything negative about their ex to make them feel better. Instead of saying something like, "They were a jerk and you're better off without them," just acknowledge the sense of loss your friend is feeling by saying, "It must be really hard to lose someone you cared about so much."[9]
It also typically does not help to try to show your friend the silver lining of their situation. Instead of saying, "Everything happens for a reason," just say, "I'm sorry about what you're going through. How can I help?"[10]
Don't tell your friend that whatever happened, happened for a reason. You run the risk of trivializing their pain if you say something like this.[11]
Check up on your friend. Heartbreak can stick around for a long time, so don't expect your friend to be fine after a day or 2. Check in on them regularly and ask them how they are feeling. Always remind them that you are there to help and support them however they need.[12]
Don't wait for them to reach out to you. They may really need you, but they may not be feeling up to making contact.[13]
Call your friend, text them, or leave them a note to let them know you're thinking about them. Depending on how close the 2 of you are, you may want to do this every day or every few days until they seem to be feeling a little better.
Call at strategic times to show your friend that you are thinking about them. For example, if a loved one has just passed away, you shouldn't call during the funeral, but it would be nice to call that evening or the next day to see how your friend is doing.
When you check in on your friend, be sure to remind them that you're there for them if they feel like talking.
Offer to help out with small things. If your friend is so down in the dumps that they have been neglecting everyday tasks, offer to help them out. For example, bring them some groceries or visit them to help out with math homework.[14]
If your friend declines your help, let them know it's an open invitation.
If you are close friends, consider surprising them with something unexpected, like having a pizza delivered to their house.
Consider inviting them over for a meal. This will help them get the nourishment they need and it will get them out of the house, which will probably be good for them.[15]
Don't push it. While it's great that you want to help your friend, there's only so much you can do. You need to allow your friend to grieve in their own way and give them the time they need to get past their pain. Don't expect them to bounce back right away or try to force them to get over it.[16]
Remember that during this time your friend may seem a little selfish and may not be the best friend to you. Try to be understanding and look past this. They will be back to their old selves eventually.
Take small steps when encouraging your friend to be active. If they aren't comfortable going to a party, ask them if they want to come over and watch a movie with you.
Maintain healthy boundaries and avoid saying "yes" to every request. While it's great to help your friend, it's also important to say "no" when you are not up to helping them. Make sure that you are not giving away too much of your time and emotional energy. Some ways you can maintain healthy boundaries include:[17]
Identifying what your limits are, such as what you are willing to do to help and what you are not willing to do. For example, you might be willing to listen to your friend vent about their ex, but not act as a go-between to send messages to their ex or find out what their ex is up to.
Asserting your boundaries to your friend, such as by telling them what you will and will not do. For example, you might say, "I'm happy to listen to you any time I can, but I can't accept calls when I am at work. Let's talk after I get off work."
Being direct with your friend if a boundary is crossed, such as by saying, "I am willing to help in any way I can, but as I said before, I can't help you with that."
Staying tuned into your feelings and letting your friend know if you need a break, such as by saying, "I want to help you, but I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now. Can we talk tomorrow instead?"
Practice self-care to replenish your emotional energy. You cannot pour from an empty cup, so it's important to take good care of yourself as you attempt to help your friend heal. Do things that you enjoy and that are nurturing to you to replenish your emotional stores.[18] Set aside at least 30 minutes daily to do something you enjoy and find relaxing, such as:
Going for a walk
Taking a long bath
Engaging in a favorite hobby, such as knitting, painting, or playing video games
Tell your friend how strong they are. Your friend might not be feeling very good about themselves right now, so it will help to remind them how incredibly strong and wonderful they are. Tell your friend everything you admire about them and let them know that these qualities are just what they need to get through this tough time.[19]
Consider making a list of your friend's best qualities. This may be just what they need to cheer them up.
Offer specific examples of why you think your friend is strong. Remind them of other difficult things they have dealt with in their life and tell them you are proud of how they handled them.
Help them be independent. If your friend was used to doing everything with someone who is no longer in their life, such as an ex, they may feel like they need that person in their life in order to function. Help your friend realize that they are perfectly capable of living a satisfying life without this person by encouraging them to do things with friends and by themselves.[20]
This may involve helping your friend find new hobbies that won't remind them of their ex or even helping them make some new friends. If most of the people that they used to spend time with are friends with their ex, try introducing them to some new people who don't even know the ex.
If your friend has hobbies or activities that they used to enjoy, make sure they stick with them. This will really help them get their mind off of the breakup.[21]
Be active together. Physical activities can do wonders for the spirit, so try to get your friend moving. Any kind of exercise, whether it's an organized sport or just fooling around, will do them good.[22]
Consider inviting them to an exercise class with you.
If you can't convince them to do anything too strenuous, see if they will go for a walk with you.
Encourage them to seek professional help. If your friend is having an especially hard time coping with their broken heart, encourage them to talk to a therapist. A professional may be able to offer your friend the kind of support and encouragement that their loved ones simply cannot.[23]
This is especially important if your friend feels suicidal or has been engaging in self-destructive behavior like doing drugs or hurting themselves. Your friend needs help, so make sure they get it!
A support group may also be an option, depending on what kind of heartbreak your friend is dealing with. This will give them the opportunity to talk to other people who know exactly what they are going through.
Suggest a technology timeout. If your friend is going through a breakup, they may be itching to badmouth their ex or rant about it on social media, but this really won't do them any good. Try to convince them to take some time away from social media and to keep the details of their relationship private. This will also help them avoid seeing anything that their ex and/or friends may have posted about the breakup.[24]
A technology timeout may be appropriate for other kinds of heartbreak as well, especially if they are being overwhelmed by people expressing their sympathy.
Discourage obsessive behavior. Some activities will just make your friend's pain worse, so try to identify destructive habits that get your friend upset and discourage them from doing those things. Let them know how you feel about this and encourage them to stop the behavior.[25]
Make sure your friend is not harassing their ex after a breakup. If they keep calling their ex or asking everyone they know about what their ex is doing, let them know that you are concerned.
If your friend just lost their job, discourage them from reading (or posting) negative reviews about their former company online.
Watch out for unhealthy habits. It can be easy to neglect your health when you're going through a tough time, so make sure your friend is not doing this. If you notice that they are not getting enough sleep, not eating properly, or have started drinking or taking drugs, express your concern and encourage them to make healthier choices.[26]
Sit your friend down for a one-on-one intervention if you notice any of this behavior. They may not even realize what they are doing to themselves.
If you are really concerned about your friend, talk to other people who can help you help them. This is especially important if your friend is a minor. Their parents need to know about their destructive behavior.
View rebound relationships with caution. There are mixed views on whether or not it is a good idea to get into a new relationship right after a breakup. If your friend is jumping into a new relationship right after breaking up with someone else, it may be a good idea to talk to them about their reasons for wanting to find a new partner so quickly.
If they are trying to fill the void left by their ex by getting into a relationship with someone who they wouldn't ordinarily be interested in, the rebound relationship will probably cause them (and the person they are dating) more harm than good.[27]
If, on the other hand, they feel ready to get back out there and seem to have a good understanding of what they are looking for in a partner, a new relationship may be just what they need.[28]
If your friend wants to talk, let them talk. Make sure that you are truly listening. Do not interrupt.
You might find yourself in a tough situation if your friend is going through a breakup and you are friends with the ex as well. It's important to talk with your friends about their expectations so they won't end up getting angry with you for talking to their ex in the future.
If you're afraid that your friend might be suicidal or in danger of harming themself or someone else, take it seriously. Call emergency services or contact a crisis hotline. For example, if you live in the U.S., you can text HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741, or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Tesla pushed back Monday against claims that its electric vehicles may suddenly accelerate on their own, calling a petition filed with federal safety regulators “completely false.”
Tesla also questions the validity of the petition, noting that it was submitted by a Tesla short-seller.
Last week, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration said it would review a defect petition that cited 127 consumer complaints of alleged unintended acceleration of Tesla electric vehicles that may have contributed to or caused 110 crashes and 52 injuries.
The petition, which was first reported by CNBC, was filed by Brian Sparks, an independent investor who is currently shorting Tesla’s stock. Sparks has hedged his bets and has been long Tesla in the past, according to the CNBC report.
At the time, Tesla didn’t respond to requests for comment. Now, in a blog post, the company said that it routinely reviews customer complaints of unintended acceleration with NHTSA.
“In every case we reviewed with them, the data proved the vehicle functioned properly,” Tesla wrote in a blog post on its website.
The automaker argued that its vehicles are designed to avoid unintended acceleration, noting that its system will default to cutting off motor torque if the two independent position sensors on its accelerator pedals register any error.
“We also use the Autopilot sensor suite to help distinguish potential pedal misapplications and cut torque to mitigate or prevent accidents when we’re confident the driver’s input was unintentional,” the company wrote.
Here is the complete response from Tesla:
This petition is completely false and was brought by a Tesla short-seller. We investigate every single incident where the driver alleges to us that their vehicle accelerated contrary to their input, and in every case where we had the vehicle’s data, we confirmed that the car operated as designed. In other words, the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so, and it slows or stops when the driver applies the brake.
While accidents caused by a mistaken press of the accelerator pedal have been alleged for nearly every make/model of vehicle on the road, the accelerator pedals in Model S, X and 3 vehicles have two independent position sensors, and if there is any error, the system defaults to cut off motor torque. Likewise, applying the brake pedal simultaneously with the accelerator pedal will override the accelerator pedal input and cut off motor torque, and regardless of the torque, sustained braking will stop the car. Unique to Tesla, we also use the Autopilot sensor suite to help distinguish potential pedal misapplications and cut torque to mitigate or prevent accidents when we’re confident the driver’s input was unintentional. Each system is independent and records data, so we can examine exactly what happened.
We are transparent with NHTSA, and routinely review customer complaints of unintended acceleration with them. Over the past several years, we discussed with NHTSA the majority of the complaints alleged in the petition. In every case we reviewed with them, the data proved the vehicle functioned properly.
Mike Rothenberg, the once high-flying VC bent on bringing the party to Silicon Valley, must now pay a whopping $31.4 million to settle a California federal court ruling in favor of Security and Exchange Commission allegations.
TechCrunch deemed Rothenberg a ‘virtual gatsby’ back in 2016, when we first broke the news about the downfall of his venture capital firm, Rothenberg Ventures. It seemed he took it as a compliment, changing his instagram handle to @virtualgatsby. Indeed, the name seemed appropriate for a man who seemingly lived a party boy lifestyle and spent lavishly to woo startup founders — including going on Napa Valley wine tours, holding an annual ‘founder field day’ where he rented out the whole San Francisco Giants’ baseball stadium and spending unsparingly to executive produce a video for Coldplay.
But the party life came to a halt when top leadership jumped ship and the SEC started looking into the books. The SEC formally charged Rothenberg in August of 2018 for misappropriating millions of dollars of his investors' capital and funneling that money into his own bank account. Rothenberg settled with the SEC at the time and, as part of the settlement, was barred from the brokerage and investment advisory business for five years.
Rothenberg was later caught up in several lawsuits, including one from Transcend VR for fraud and breach of contract, which ended in a settlement. Another suit between Rothenberg and his former CFO, David Haase, ended with Rothenberg being ordered to pay $166,000 in damages.
But there was more to come from the SEC, following a forensic audit in partnership with the firm Deloitte showing the misuse or misappropriation of $18.8 million in investor funding. Under that examination, Deloitte showed Rothenberg had used the money either personally, to float his flashy lifestyle, or for other extravagances such as building a race car team and a virtual reality studio. Rothenberg has now been ordered to pay back the $18.8 million he took from investors, another $9 million in civil penalties, plus $3.7 million in interest.
Neither the SEC nor Rothenberg have responded for comment. It’s also important to note none of the charges so far have been criminal but were handled in civil court, as the SEC does not handle criminal cases.
Through all of it, Rothenberg never admitted any guilt for his actions and it is important to note that, because of this in admission of any wrongdoing, he will be able to practice again after the bar is lifted in five years. He’s also made some decent early investments in startups like Robinhood and many investor sources TechCrunch spoke to over the years seemed quite loyal to him as an investor, despite the charges, employee mass exodus and fund implosion that followed.
And it seems this saga is not over yet. Rothenberg told MarketWatch in a recent interview that he thought the ruling was, “historically excessive and vindictively punitive,” that he planned to appeal it and would be suing Silicon Valley Bank, which Rothenberg used to funnel several investments, over the matter.
Rothenberg Ventures already filed suit against Silicon Valley Bank in August of 2018, the same day the SEC filed formal charges against Rothenberg himself. In that suit, Rothenberg alleged negligence, fraud and deceit on the part of the bank and sought a trial before jury. Silicon Valley Bank said it would defend against the case at the time.
We’ve reached out to Silicon Valley Bank and are waiting to hear back. The real question is, if Rothenberg were to come back to investing in Silicon Valley, would anyone still trust him?
Rocket Lab has announced its first mission for 2020 – a dedicated rocket launch on behalf of client the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) with a launch window that opens on January 31. The Electron rocket Rocket Lab is using for this mission will take off from its Launch Complex 1 (LC-1) in New Zealand, and it’ll be the first mission Rocket Lab secured under a new contract the NRO is using that allows it to source launch providers quickly and at short notice.
This new Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR) contract model is pretty much ideal for Rocket Lab, since the whole company’s thesis is based around using small, affordable rockets that can be produced quickly thanks to carbon 3D printing used in the manufacturing process. Rocket Lab has already demonstrated the flexibility of its model by bumping a client to the top of the queue when another dropped out last year, and its ability to win an NRO mission under the RASR contract model is further proof that its aim of delivering responsive, timely rocket launch services for small payloads is hitting a market sweet spot.
The NRO is a U.S. government agency that’s in charge of developing, building, launching and operating intelligence satellites. It was originally established in 1961, but was only officially declassified and made public in 1992. Its mandate includes supporting the work of both the U.S. Intelligence Community, as well as the Department of Defense.
Increasingly, the defense industry is interested in small satellite operations, mainly because using smaller, more efficient and economical satellites means that you can respond to new needs in the field more quickly, and that you can also build resiliency into your observation and communication network through sheer volume. Traditional expensive, huge intelligence and military satellites carry giant price tags, have multi-year development timelines and offer sizeable targets to potential enemies without much in the way of redundancy. Small satellites, especially acting as part of larger constellations, mitigate pretty much all of these potential weaknesses.
One of the reasons that Rocket Lab opened its new Launch Complex 2 (LC-2) launch pad in Wallops Island, Virgina, is to better serve customers from the U.S. defense industry. Its first mission from that site, currently set to happen sometime this spring, is for the U.S. Air Force.
As the global cybersecurity market becomes increasingly crowded, the Start Up Nation remains a bulwark of innovation and opportunity generation for investors and global cyber companies alike. It achieved this chiefly in 2019 by adapting to the industry's competitive developments and pushing forward its most accomplished entrepreneurs in larger numbers to meet them.
New data illustrates how Israeli entrepreneurs have seized on the country's reputation for building radically cutting-edge technologies as the number of new Israeli cybersecurity startups addressing nascent sectors eclipses its more traditional counterparts. Moreover, related findings highlight how cybersecurity companies looking to expand beyond their traditional offerings are entering Israel's cybersecurity ecosystem in larger numbers through highly strategic acquisitions.
Broadly, new findings also reveal the Israeli cybersecurity market's overall coming of age, seasoned entrepreneurial dominance and greater appetite for longer-term visions and strategies — the latter of which received record-breaking investor backing in 2019.
Too often the world of robotics seems to be a solution in search of a problem. Assistive robotics, on the other hand, are among one of the primary real-world tasks existing technology can seemingly address almost immediately.
The concept for the technology has been around for some time now and has caught on particularly well in places like Japan, where human help simply can't keep up with the needs of an aging population. At TC Sessions: Robotics+AI at U.C. Berkeley on March 3, we'll be speaking with a pair of founders developing offerings for precisely these needs.
Vivian Chu is the cofounder and CEO of Diligent Robotics. The company has developed the Moxi robot to help assist with chores and other non-patient tasks, in order to allow caregivers more time to interact with patients. Prior to Diligent, Chu worked at both Google[X] and Honda Research Institute.
Mike Dooley is the cofounder and CEO of Labrador Systems. The Los Angeles-based company recently closed a $2 million seed round to develop assistive robots for the home. Dooley has worked at a number of robotics companies including, most recently a stint as the VP of Product and Business Development at iRobot.
Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $275, but you better hurry, prices go up in less than a month by $100. Students can book a super discounted ticket for just $50 right here.
Robotics startup company Soft Robotics has closed its Series B round of funding, raising $23 million led by Calibrate Ventures and Material Impact, and including participation from exiting investors including Honeywell, Yahama, Hyperplane and more. This round also brings in FANUC, the world’s largest maker of industrial robots and a recently announced strategic partner for Soft Robotics .
The company said in a press release announcing this latest round of funding that the round was oversubscribed, which suggests it isn’t looking to glut itself on capital investors, given that this $23 million follows a similarly sized $20 million round that closed in 2018 which it also referred to as “oversubscribed.” Prior to that, Soft Robotics had raised $5 million in a Series A round closed in 2015. It has plenty of large, global clients already, so it’s probably not hurting for revenue.
Soft Robotics is focused on developing robotic grippers that, as you might’ve guessed from the name, make use of soft material endpoints that can more easily grip a range of different objects without the kind of extremely specific and tolerance-allergic complex programming that’s required for most traditional industrial robotic claws.
With its 2018 funding raise, Soft Robotics said that it was expanding further into food and beverage, as well as doubling down on its presence in the retail and logistics industries. This round and its new partnership with FANUC (which involves a new integrated system that pairs its mGrip robotic gripper with a new Mini-P controller, all with simple integration to FANUC’s existing lineup of industrial robots) will give it strategic and functional access to what is the most influenentioal industrial robotics company in the world.
This round will specifically help Soft Robotics spend on growth, looking to increase its variability even further and work on expanding its food packaging and consumer goods applications, as well as diving into e-commerce and logistics – specifically to help automate and improve the returns process, a costly and ever-growing challenge as more retail moves online.

In films, TV shows and books — and even in video games where characters are designed to respond to user behavior — we don't perceive characters as beings with whom we can establish two-way relationships. But that’s poised to change, at least in some use cases.
Interactive characters — fictional, virtual personas capable of personalized interactions — are defining new territory in entertainment. In my guide to the concept of "virtual beings," I outlined two categories of these characters:
virtual influencers: fictional characters with real-world social media accounts who build and engage with a mass following of fans.
virtual companions: AIs oriented toward one-to-one relationships, much like the tech depicted in the films “Her” and “Ex Machina.” They are personalized enough to engage us in entertaining discussions and respond to our behavior (in the physical world or within games) like a human would.
In this discussion, Fable CEO Edward Saatchi addresses the technical and artistic dynamics of virtual companions: AIs created to establish one-to-one relationships with consumers. After mobile, Saatchi says he believes such virtual beings will act as the next paradigm for human-computer interaction.
Alphabet and Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, is the latest tech giant kingpin to make a public call for AI to be regulated while simultaneously encouraging lawmakers towards a dilute enabling framework that does not put any hard limits on what can be done with AI technologies.
In an op-ed published in today’s Financial Times, Pichai makes a headline-grabbing call for artificial intelligence to be regulated. But his pitch injects a suggestive undercurrent that puffs up the risk for humanity of not letting technologists get on with business as usual and apply AI at population-scale — with the Google chief claiming: “AI has the potential to improve billions of lives, and the biggest risk may be failing to do so” — thereby seeking to frame ‘no hard limits’ as actually the safest option for humanity.
Simultaneously the pitch downplays any negatives that might cloud the greater good that Pichai implies AI will unlock — presenting “potential negative consequences” as simply the inevitable and necessary price of technological progress.
It’s all about managing the level of risk, is the leading suggestion, rather than questioning outright whether the use of a hugely risk-laden technology such as facial recognition should actually be viable in a democratic society.
“Internal combustion engines allowed people to travel beyond their own areas but also caused more accidents,” Pichai writes, raiding history for a self-serving example while ignoring the vast climate costs of combustion engines (and the resulting threat now posed to the survival of countless species on Earth).
“The internet made it possible to connect with anyone and get information from anywhere, but also easier for misinformation to spread,” he goes on. “These lessons teach us that we need to be clear-eyed about what could go wrong.”
For “clear-eyed” read: Accepting of the technology-industry’s interpretation of ‘collateral damage’. (Which, in the case of misinformation and Facebook, appears to run to feeding democracy itself into the ad-targeting meat-grinder.)
Meanwhile, not at all mentioned in Pichai’s discussion of AI risks: The concentration of monopoly power that artificial intelligence appears to be very good at supercharging.
The only thing that’s better than zero regulation are laws made by useful idiots who’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for industry-expounded false dichotomies — such as those claiming it’s ‘innovation or privacy’.
Pichai’s intervention also comes at a strategic moment, with US lawmakers eyeing AI regulation and the White House seemingly throwing itself into alignment with tech giants’ desires for ‘innovation-friendly’ rules which make their business easier. (To wit: This month White House CTO Michael Kratsios warned in a Bloomberg op-ed against “preemptive, burdensome or duplicative rules that would needlessly hamper AI innovation and growth”.)
The new European Commission, meanwhile, has been sounding a firmer line on both AI and big tech.
It has made tech-driven change a key policy priority, with president Ursula von der Leyen making public noises about reining in tech giants. She has also committed to publish "a coordinated European approach on the human and ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence" within her first 100 days in office. (She took up the post on December 1, 2019 so the clock is ticking.)
Last week a leaked draft of the Commission proposals for pan-EU AI regulation suggest it’s leaning towards a relatively light touch approach (albeit, the European version of light touch is considerably more involved and interventionist than anything born in a Trump White House, clearly) — although the paper does float the idea of a temporary ban on the use of facial recognition technology in public places.
The paper notes that such a ban would “safeguard the rights of individuals, in particular against any possible abuse of the technology” — before arguing against such a "far-reaching measure that might hamper the development and uptake of this technology", in favor of relying on provisions in existing EU law (such as the EU data protection framework, GDPR), in addition to relevant tweaks to current product safety and liability laws.
While it’s not yet clear which way the Commission will jump on regulating AI, even the lightish-touch version its considering would likely be a lot more onerous than Pichai would like.
In the op-ed he calls for what he couches as “sensible regulation” — aka taking a “proportionate approach, balancing potential harms, especially in high-risk areas, with social opportunities”.
For “social opportunities” read: The plentiful ‘business opportunities’ Google is spying — assuming the hoped for vast additional revenue scale it can get by supercharging expansion of AI-powered services into all sorts of industries and sectors (from health to transportation to everywhere else in between) isn’t derailed by hard legal limits on where AI can actually be applied.
“Regulation can provide broad guidance while allowing for tailored implementation in different sectors,” Pichai urges, setting out a preference for enabling “principles” and post-application “reviews”, to keep the AI spice flowing.
The op-ed only touches very briefly on facial recognition — despite the FT editors choosing to illustrate it with an image of the tech. Here Pichai again seeks to reframe the debate around what is, by nature, an extremely rights-hostile technology — talking only in passing of “nefarious uses” of facial recognition.
Of course this wilfully obfuscates the inherent risks of letting blackbox machines make algorithmic guesses at identity every time a face happens to pass through a public space.
You can’t hope to protect people’s privacy in such a scenario. Many other rights are also at risk, depending on what else the technology is being used for. So, really, any use of facial recognition is laden with individual and societal risk.
But Pichai is seeking to put blinkers on lawmakers. He doesn’t want them to see inherent risks baked into such a potent and powerful technology — pushing them towards only a narrow, ill-intended subset of “nefarious” and “negative” AI uses and “consequences” as being worthy of “real concerns”.
And so he returns to banging the drum for “a principled and regulated approach to applying AI” [emphasis ours] — putting the emphasis on regulation that, above all, gives the green light for AI to be applied.
What technologists fear most here is rules that tell them when artificial intelligence absolutely cannot apply.
Ethics and principles are, to a degree, mutable concepts — and ones which the tech giants have become very practiced at claiming as their own, for PR purposes, including by attaching self-styled ‘guard-rails’ to their own AI operations. (But of course there’s no actual legal binds there.)
At the same time data-mining giants like Google are very smooth operators when it comes to gaming existing EU rules around data protection, such as by infesting their user-interfaces with confusing dark patterns that push people to click or swipe their rights away.
But a ban on applying certain types of AI would change the rules of the game. Because it would put society in the driving seat.
Laws that contained at least a moratorium on certain “dangerous” applications of AI — such as facial recognition technology, or autonomous weapons like the drone-based system Google was previously working on — have been called for by some far-sighted regulators.
And a ban would be far harder for platform giants to simply bend to their will.
So for a while I was willing to buy into the whole tech ethics thing but now I'm fully on the side of tech refusal. We need to be teaching refusal.
The most interesting thing I saw online this week was Venkatesh Rao’s “Internet of Beefs” essay. I don’t agree with all of it. I’m not even sure I agree with most of it. But it’s a sharp, perceptive, well-argued piece which offers an explanation for why online public spaces have almost all become battlefields, or, as he puts it:
“are now being slowly taken over by beef-only thinkers … Anything that is not an expression of pure, unqualified support for whatever they are doing or saying is received as a mark of disrespect, and a provocation … as the global culture wars evolve into a stable, endemic, background societal condition of continuous conflict.” He goes on to taxonomizes the online knights and mooks who fight in this conflict, in incisive detail.
I agree this continuous conflict exists. (There exists another theory arguing that it’s really mostly bots and disinformation ops. Maybe, I guess, but that claim seems increasingly unconvincing.) I think this seething tire-fire conflict is part of something larger: the transition of the marketplace of ideas from a stock market into a weapons market.
Once, the idea was, there existed a “marketplace of ideas,” wherein people from across the political spectrum — generally the highly educated, but with some room for notions bubbling up from the grassroots — would introduce ideas for initiatives, actions, programs, and/or laws. These ideas would be considered, contrasted, debated, honed, amended, and weighed, and over time, in the same way stock markets identify the best companies, the the marketplace of ideas would identify the finest concepts. These in turn would then see actual implementation, courtesy of those in power — i.e. the rich and the elected — for the greater good of all.
This was the world of think tanks, of policy documents, of presentations at important conferences, of reporting breathlessly on major speeches, of trial-balloon op-eds, of congressional and parliamentary testimony, of councils and summits and studies that produced lavishly bound reports with the expectation that they would be seriously and judiciously considered by all sides of a debate. It was a world where new ideas might climb the hierarchy of the so-called great and good until they rose high enough that it was seen fit to actually implement them.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but if we ever lived in a world anything like that, well, we don’t any more. Some reject it on the (correct) grounds that this so-called marketplace of ideas, shockingly, always seemed to favor entrenching the interests of those “great and good,” the rich and the elected, the councilors and the presenters, rather than the larger population. Others simply want more for themselves and less for everyone else, rather than aiming for any kind of Pareto-optimal ideal outcome for all.
Nowadays the primary goal is to win the conflict, and other outcomes are at best secondary. Policy documents and statistical analyses are not taken for serious across-the-board consideration; they are simply weapons, or fig leaves, to serve as defenses or pretexts for decisions which have already been made.
This may seem so self-evident that it’s not even worth writing about — you probably need only consider your local national politics — but the strange thing is that so many of the participants in the whole apparatus, the policy analysts and think tankers and speechgivers and presenters, don’t seem to realize that nowadays their output is used as weapons and pretexts, rather than ideas to compete with other ideas in a rational marketplace.
Let’s pick a few relatively apolitical/acultural ones, to minimize the chance of your own ingrained conflict responses kicking in. Consider NIMBYism in Bay Area real estate: the opposition to building more housing on the grounds that this could not possibly lower housing prices. It’s a perfect object example of a low-level constant conflict in which all participants have long sine decided on their sides. There is no point in bringing conflicting data to a NIMBY (and, of course, they would say the same about a YIMBY like myself) as they will find a way to dismiss or ignore it. You can lead a horse to data, but you can’t make them think.
A couple more low-politics examples from my own online spaces: in the cryptocurrency world, most participants are so incentivized to believe in their One Truth that nearly every idea or proposal leads to an angry chorus denouncing all other truths. Or consider advocates of greater law enforcement “lawful access” to all encrypted messaging, vs. my own side, that of privacy advocates devoutly opposed to such. Neither side seems particularly interested in actually seriously considering any new data or new idea which might support the other side’s arguments. The dispute is more fundamental than that.
There exist a few remaining genuine marketplaces of ideas. Engineering standards and protocols, for one. (Yes, politics and personal hobbyhorses / vendettas get everywhere, even there, but relatively speaking.) The law, for another, albeit seemingly decreasingly so. But increasingly, academic papers, policy analyses, cross-sectional studies, closely argued op-eds, center-stage presentations, etc., are all artifacts of a world which no longer exists, if it ever really did. Nowadays these artifacts are largely just used to add a veneer of respectability to pre-existing tribal beliefs.
This isn’t true of every politician, CEO, billionaire, or other decisionmaker. And it’s certainly more true of one side than the other. But the increasingly irrelevant nature of our so-called marketplace of ideas seems hard to ignore. Perhaps, when it comes to the the tangible impact of these ceaseless online coal-fire conflicts, that old joke at the expense of academia applies: the discourse is so vicious because the stakes are so small.
We’re off and running with good milestones achieved for NASA’s commercial crew program, which means it’s more likely than ever we’ll actually see astronauts launch from U.S. soil before the year is out.
If that’s not enough to get you pumped about the space sector in 2020, we also have a great overview of 2019 in space tech investment, and a look forward at what’s happening next year from Space Angels’ Chad Anderson. Plus, we announced our own dedicated space event, which is happening this June.
SpaceX launched its Crew Dragon commercial astronaut spacecraft on Sunday. No one was on board, but the test was crucial because it included firing off the in-flight abort (IFA) safety system that will protect actual astronauts should anything go wrong with future real missions.
The SpaceX in-flight abort test included this planned fireball, as the Falcon 9 rocket it launched upon broke up.
The IFA seems to have worked as intended, propelling the Crew Dragon away from the Falcon 9 it was launched on top of at high speed. In an actual emergency, this would ensure that the astronauts aboard were transported to a safe distance, and then returned to Earth at a safe speed using the onboard parachutes, which seem to have deployed exactly as planned.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is looking a bit further ahead, in the meantime, to when his company’s Starship spacecraft is fully operational and making regular trips to Mars. Musk said he wants to be launching Starships as much as thrice daily, with the goal of moving megatons of cargo and up to a million people to Mars at full target operating pace.
Secretive space launch startup SpinLaunch is adding to its operating capital with a new $35 million investment, a round led by Airbus Ventures, GV and more. The company wants to use rotational force to effectively fling payloads out of Earth’s atmosphere – without using any rockets. Sounds insane, but I’ve heard from people much smarter than me that the company, and the core concept, is sound.
I spoke to Space Angels CEO Chat Anderson about his company’s quarterly tracking of private investment in the space technology sector, which they’ve been doing since 2017. They’re uniquely well-positioned to combine data from both public sources and the companies they speak to, and perform due diligence on, so there’s no better place to look for insight on where we’ve been, and an educated perspective on where we’re going. Rocket Lab was born in New Zealand, and still operates a facility and main launch pad there, but it’s increasingly building out its U.S. presence, too. Now, the company shared its plans to build a combined HQ/Mission Control/rocket fab facility in LA. Construction is already underway, and it should be completed later this year.
‘Rideshare’ in space means something entirely different than it does on Earth – you’re not hailing an Uber, you’re booking one portion of cargo space aboard a rocket with a group of other clients. Orbex has a new customer that bought up all the capacity for one of its future rideshare missions, planned for 2022. The new launch provider hasn’t actually launched any rockets, however, so it’ll have to pass that key milestone before it makes good on that new contract.
Yes, it’s official: TechCrunch is hosting its on space-focused tech event on June 25 in LA. This will be a one-day, high-profile program featuring discussions with the top companies and people in space tech, startups and investment. We’ll be revealing more about programming over the next few months, but if you get in now you can guarantee your spot.
Google has inked a deal with India's third-largest telecom operator as the American giant looks to grow its cloud customer base in the key overseas market that is increasingly emerging as a new cloud battleground for AWS and Microsoft .
Google Cloud announced on Monday that the new partnership, effective starting today, enables Airtel to offer G Suite to small and medium-sized businesses as part of the telco's ICT portfolio.
Airtel, which has amassed over 325 million subscribers in India, said it currently serves 2,500 large businesses and over 500,000 small and medium-sized businesses and startups in the country. The companies did not share details of their financial arrangement.
In a statement, Thomas Kurian, chief executive of Google Cloud, said, "the combination of G Suite's collaboration and productivity tools with Airtel's digital business offerings will help accelerate digital innovations for thousands of Indian businesses."
AWS, which leads the cloud market, interestingly does not maintain any similar deals with a telecom operator — though it did in the past. Deals with carriers, which were very common a decade ago as tech giants looked to acquire new users in India, illustrates the phase of the cloud adoption in the nation.
Nearly half a billion people in India came online last decade. And slowly, small businesses and merchants are also beginning to use digital tools, storage services, and accept online payments. According to a report by lobby group Nasscom, India's cloud market is estimated to be worth more than $7 billion in three years.
Like in many other markets, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are locked in an intense battle to win cloud customers in India. All of them offer near identical features and are often willing to pay out a potential client's remainder credit to the rival to convince them to switch, industry executives have told TechCrunch.
A couple of weeks ago, France's digital minister Cédric O announced some changes when it comes to stock options in France. President Emmanuel Macron is going to talk about the new policy today ahead of the World Economic Forum.
While I don't want to be too technical, here's a quick overview of the changes.
First, the price of stock options (also known as BSPCE in France) won't be based on the same VC-determined valuation. Let's take an example — a VC fund invests in a Series A round, valuing the company at €12 million.
If you join the company after, you can get stock options based on a lower valuation, which increases the chances of higher returns. Going forward, there will be a different valuation for employees getting stock options.
Second, if you work for a foreign startup but you're based in France, you couldn't receive stock options. For instance, if you're a Citymapper employee — a startup that is headquartered in London — based out of the Paris office, you could forget about stock options. Employees based in France can now receive stock options even if the company isn't incorporated in France.
Third, the French Tech Visa now also works for foreign companies with an office in Paris. If you work for Berlin-based N26 and you want to hire a great Brazilian data scientist in your Paris office, you can now go through the fast-track visa process for startup employees.
Last year, VC firm Index Ventures coordinated an effort to overhaul stock option policies across Europe by lobbying policymakers. Hundreds of tech CEOs have signed the 'Not Optional' letter since then.
According to Index Ventures, Germany, Spain and Belgium are the lowest-ranked European countries when it comes to the regulatory framework around stock options.

The Catalyst Fund has gained $15 million in new support from JP Morgan and UK Aid and will back 30 fintech startups in Africa, Asia, and Latin America over the next three years.
The Boston based accelerator provides mentorship and non-equity funding to early-stage tech ventures focused on driving financial inclusion in emerging and frontier markets.
That means connecting people who may not have access to basic financial services — like a bank account, credit or lending options — to those products.
Catalyst Fund will choose an annual cohort of 10 fintech startups in five designated countries: Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, India and Mexico. Those selected will gain grant-funds and go through a six-month accelerator program. The details of that and how to apply are found here.
“We’re offering grants of up to $100,000 to early-stage companies, plus venture building support…and really…putting these companies on a path to product market fit,” Catalyst Fund Director Maelis Carraro told TechCrunch.
Program participants gain exposure to the fund's investor networks and investor advisory committee, that include Accion and 500 Startups. With the $15 million Catalyst Fund will also make some additions to its network of global partners that support the accelerator program. Names will be forthcoming, but Carraro, was able to disclose that India’s Yes Bank and University of Cambridge are among them.
Catalyst fund has already accelerated 25 startups through its program. Companies, such as African payments venture ChipperCash and SokoWatch — an East African B2B e-commerce startup for informal retailers — have gone on to raise seven-figure rounds and expand to new markets.
Those are kinds of business moves Catalyst Fund aims to spur with its program. The accelerator was founded in 2016, backed by JP Morgan and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
African fintech startups have dominated the accelerator’s companies, comprising 56% of the portfolio into 2019.
That trend continued with Catalyst Fund’s most recent cohort, where five of six fintech ventures — Pesakit,Kwara, Cowrywise, Meerkat and Spoon — are African and one, agtech credit startup Farmart, operates in India.
The draw to Africa is because the continent demonstrates some of the greatest need for Catalyst Fund’s financial inclusion mission.
By several estimates, Africa is home to the largest share of the world's unbanked population and has a sizable number of underbanked consumers and SMEs.
Collectively, these numbers have led to the bulk of Africa’s VC funding going to thousands of fintech startups attempting to scale payment solutions on the continent.
Digital finance in Africa has also caught the attention of notable outside names. Twitter/Square CEO Jack Dorsey recently took an interest in Africa’s cryptocurrency potential and Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs has invested in fintech startups on the continent.
This lends to the question of JP Morgan’s interests vis-a-vis Catalyst Fund and Africa’s financial sector.
For now, JP Morgan doesn’t have plans to invest directly in Africa startups and is taking a long-view in its support of the accelerator, according to Colleen Briggs — JP Morgan's Head of Community Innovation
“We find financial health and financial inclusion is a…cornerstone for inclusive growth…For us if you care about a stable economy, you have to start with financial inclusion,” said Briggs, who also oversees the Catalyst Fund.
This take aligns with JP Morgan’s 2019 announcement of a $125 million, philanthropic, five-year commitment to improve financial health in the U.S. and globally.
More recently, JP Morgan Chase posted some of the strongest financial results on Wall Street, with Q4 profits of $2.9 billion. It’ll be worth following if the company shifts its income-generating prowess to business and venture funding activities in Catalyst Fund markets such as Nigeria, India and Mexico.
Tink, the European open banking platform, is disclosing €90 million in new funding, just 11 months after the Sweden-headquartered company announced a €56 million round of funding.
Co-leading this new round is Dawn Capital, HMI Capital and Insight Partners. The round also includes the incumbent postal operator and Italy's largest financial services network Poste Italiane as a new investor, along with existing investors Heartcore Capital, ABN AMRO Ventures and BNP Paribas' venture arm, Opera Tech Ventures.
The injection of capital will enable Tink to accelerate its European expansion plans and further develop its product accordingly.
“During 2020, we are committed to building out our platform with more bank connections and, on top of that, expand our product offering,” Tink co-founder and CEO Daniel Kjellén tells me. “Our aim is to become the preferred pan-European provider of digital banking services and increase our local presence across the region”.
Originally launched in Sweden in 2013 as a consumer-facing finance app with bank account aggregation at its heart, Tink has long since repositioned its offering to become a fully-fledged open banking platform, requisite with developer APIs, to enable banks and other financial service providers to ride the open banking/PSD2 train.
Through its various APIs, Tink provides four pillars of technology: "Account Aggregation," "Payment Initiation," "Personal Finance Management" and "Data Enrichment." These can be used by third parties to roll their own standalone apps or integrated into existing banking applications.
“We have grown significantly, both in terms of our platform's connectivity and as an organisation,” says Kjellén, when asked what has changed in the last 11 months. “We have during the year launched our platform in Belgium, Austria, the U.K., Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy. In total, our open banking platform is right now live in twelve European markets and connects to more than 2,500 banks that reach more than 250 million bank customers across Europe”.
The company’s headcount has also grown a lot, too. In the beginning of 2019 it sat at around 120, but is now at 300 employees. Most but not all are based in its headquarters in Stockholm, alongside local offices including recently opened sites in Paris, Helsinki, Oslo, Madrid, Warsaw, Milan and Copenhagen.
Perhaps better positioned than most, I asked Kjellén what types of use cases are really resonating with open banking, given that many industry commentators don’t think it has quite yet lived up to the hype.
“Many of our customers are seeing the advantage of being able to build smart multi-banking products with the data that they are now able to fetch and use to add value for their end users,” he says. “The use cases that really show the potential of open banking that we see our customers thriving with are those that leverage the full value of the financial data to deliver truly personalised experiences at scale, or remove friction in the user journey to a minimum, such as proactive price comparison, enhanced credit scoring and onboarding. Use cases such as these show that the consumer's data can really work for them and bring improvements to their everyday interactions”.
One example Kjellén gives me is Klarna, the checkout credit provider, which he says is using open banking to provide a “wonderful” in-app experience. “I love that I as a consumer can now choose to change my mind and slice up the payments for a purchase I have already paid in full with my bank card,” he explains. “This shows how the potential of open banking goes way beyond just accessing a transaction history and allows the most innovative players, such as Klarna, to create a new standard in consumer experience”.
Kjellén says another standout use-case is using PSD2 APIs to verify identity to complete any type of customer registration completely automatically. “[That is] something that I find very innovative. It automates the previously time-consuming administration on the business side and delivers a completely seamless digital service on the end user side,” he says.
Meanwhile, Tink says its customer numbers have “quadrupled” in the past year, and includes PayPal, Klarna, NatWest, ABN AMRO, BNP Paribas Fortis, Nordea and SEB. “More than 4,000 developers are currently using Tink to build and power new innovative financial services and products,” adds Kjellén.
