The senior general and commander of the Revolutionary Guards Quds Force, responsible for Iranian military operations abroad, was killed in a US drone strike early Friday morning, ramping up tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The Middle East Media Research Institute has dug up year-and-a-half-old footage of a speech given by Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani in which the Quds Force commander blasts US President Donald Trump over his "idiotic" Twitter comments and warns the US against starting a conflict with Iran.

Demonstrators took to the streets across the U.S. on Saturday to protest the Trump administration's killing of a top Iranian general and decision to send about 3,000 more soldiers to the Middle East.
"No justice, no peace. U.S. out of the Middle East," about 200 protesters chanted near the Trump Tower in Chicago. Protesters held signs that read "Stop bombing Iraq" and "U.S. troops out of Iraq."
More than 70 planned protests were being spearheaded by Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, a U.S.-based anti-war coalition, in conjunction with other organizations. They seek withdrawal of U.S.troops from Iraq and end to what it says is a war on Iran, according to spokesperson Walter Smolarek.

Germany blames Airbus for the helicopters' low availability, but it is the latest example of the country's general continuing readiness woes.
A report has emerged that shows just 15 percent of Germany's Tiger attack helicopters and only around 12 percent of its NH90 transport helicopters were mission capable as of November 2019. The German Armed Forces, or Bundeswehr, has blamed Airbus, which provides contract maintenance services for both types, for the low availability rates, but this also comes as German authorities continue to struggle to improve readiness across the country's military.
German newspaper Bild was first to report on the low readiness of the two German military helicopter types on Jan. 1, 2020. A leaked Bundeswehr report that the outlet obtained said that eight out of 53 Tigers and 12 of 99 NH90s were "ready-to-use." Germany took delivery of its first Tiger in 2005 from what was then known as Eurocopter, which morphed into Airbus Helicopters in 2014. The German military received the first NH90, which NHIndustries, a consortium that includes Airbus, produces, in 2006.
Accord creates new tensions between Greece and Turkey as Ankara says EastMed project cannot proceed without its consent.
The leaders of Greece, Israel and Cyprus met in Athens on Thursday to sign a deal for an undersea pipeline that would carry gas from new offshore deposits in the southeastern Mediterranean to continental Europe - a move that has riled Turkey.
The 2,000-km (1,243-mile) EastMed pipeline is intended to provide an alternative gas source for energy-hungry Europe, which is currently largely dependent on supplies from Russia and the Caucasus region.
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's navy will accompany UK-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz to provide protection after the U.S. killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani inflamed tensions in the region.
Britain's defence minister, Ben Wallace, ordered the HMS Montrose and HMS Defender to prepare to return to escort duties in the major oil shipping route as Prime Minister Boris Johnson came in for criticism for his silence over the killing.
Media reports have said Johnson is on holiday in the Caribbean.
"The government will take all necessary steps to protect our ships and citizens at this time," Wallace said in a statement.
Washington (CNN)The Trump administration has warned members of Congress that Iran is expected to retaliate against the US "within weeks" for the strike that killed Qasem Soleimani even as they failed to convince some that the operation was merited due to an imminent threat against American lives.
There are also intense discussions taking place inside US military and intelligence agencies to assess whether Iran might be preparing some type of retaliatory strikes in the next few days or wait for some time, according to a US official with direct knowledge of the situation. "There are conflicting views" on whether Iran will quickly retaliate or wait, but US military defenses are ready, the official said.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Mark Milley publicly addressed the issue of potential retaliation from Iran Friday. When asked whether there is now a risk to US safety in the region, Milley bluntly said, "Damn right there is risk."
Iran's provocations of the US were aimed at undermining Iraq's protest movement, but it did not expect to lose one of its most important military figures
According to several news reports, just before his assassination at around dawn on Friday, Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, had been planning to wage a series of attacks on US targets within Syria and Iraq.
It would seem, according to these reports, that Soleimani's aim, and the aim of those who stand behind him in Tehran's regime – perhaps also the aim of their subordinates in Iraq - was to initiate a limited escalation against the United States.
The assumption was that such an escalation would soon be contained once the Iraqi political landscape had been preoccupied with a more serious event than the popular protest movement that seemed to direct its wrath against Iranian intervention in Iraq.
Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently....
....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!
* Trump tweeted the threat on Saturday night to hit 52 targets representing victims of Iran hostage crisis * It came in response to Tehran's threat to hit 35 American targets in the region including US ships * Iranians raised the blood-red 'flags of revenge' over the minarets at the revered Jamkaran Mosque * Iranian officials and Qassem Soleimani's supporters have vowed vengeance for his death in US strike * A congressional staffer said the White House expects Iran to retaliate 'within weeks' * Lebanon's Hezbollah has told Iraqi soldiers to stay away from U.S. military bases starting Sunday * Thousands of U.S. paratroopers from the 82 Airborne Division continue to deploy to the Middle East
President Donald Trump has threatened to hit 52 critical targets in Iran in retaliation if Tehran strikes any American interests in the region, upping the stakes after Iran said it had identified 35 targets for potential strikes.
'Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!' Trump tweeted on Saturday from Mar-a-Lago, after spending the day at his nearby golf course.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the European allies of the United States have been less understanding than he had hoped about the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
"I spent the last day and a half, two days, talking to partners in the region, sharing with them what we were doing, why we were doing it, seeking their assistance, they've all been fantastic. And then talking to our partners in other places that haven't been quite as good. Frankly, the Europeans haven't been as helpful as I wish that they could be," Pompeo told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Friday.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior military commander of Iraq's Kataeb Hezbollah group Abu Ali al-Askari called for enrollment of the crowds who have volunteered for martyrdom-seeking operations against the US occupying forces.
"I want a chance to be given to those who are willing to be martyred in martyrdom-seeking operation against the aggressors by enrolling them," al-Askari wrote on his twitter page on Friday after Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), or Hashad al-Shaabi, and Commander of IRGC Qods Force Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani were martyred in the US terrorist attack in Iraq.
"I will be honored to sign up as the first volunteer and if God wants, I will be the first martyr," he added.
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO has suspended training of Iraqi forces to ensure the safety of several hundred mission members amid fears for regional stability after a U.S. air strike in Baghdad killed a top Iranian general, an alliance spokesman said on Saturday.
"The safety of our personnel in Iraq is paramount," acting NATO spokesman Dylan White said in a statement. "We continue to take all precautions necessary. NATO's mission is continuing, but training activities are temporarily suspended."
He said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had spoken by phone with U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper since Friday's attack on Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport.

An Iranian official says at least 35 U.S. targets, including warships and Tel Aviv, have been identified for retaliatory strikes as Lebanon's Hezbollah tell Iraqi soldiers to leave U.S. bases and the White House say an attack can happen 'within weeks.'
The potential threat was raised by General Gholamali Abuhamzeh, the commander of the Guards in the southern province of Kerman, one day after the top military leader was killed at the Baghdad International Airport.
Hezbollah, an Islamic political and militant group, has also warned Iraqi soldiers to stay at least one kilometer away from U.S. military bases from Sunday onwards.

Iranians today raised the blood-red 'flags of revenge', vowing to retaliate after the US killed general Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike in Baghdad.
Iranian state TV broadcast the flag being hoisted over the minarets at the revered Jamkaran Mosque in the holy city of Qom on Saturday.
In Shia Islam the red flags, which have also been flown at demonstrations in Tehran, symbolize blood spilled unjustly and serve as a call to avenge the person who is slain.

Thousands of furious mourners thronged in the streets of Baghdad today during funeral processions for the slain Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and an Iraqi militia commander who died with him during yesterday's US strike.
They chanted 'Death to America' and 'America is the Great Satan' as they walked beside the coffins of Soleimani, architect of Iran's global military strategy, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Kataeb Hezbollah chief, in Baghdad.
The pair had been riding in a two-vehicle convoy which was decimated by three missiles from an American MQ-9 Reaper Drone in the early hours of Friday outside Baghdad International Airport.
The strike - which also killed four more Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards and five members of Iraq's pro-Iran paramilitary network - infuriated Tehran, who vowed jihad on America.

Multiple similar accounts have now come out over the inside the Situation Room decision-making process concerning the risky move to take out the IRGC's Gen. Qasem Soleimani, as well as how the drone attack operation played out at the airport.
By all accounts, as Soleimani traveled to and through Baghdad airport US intelligence seized upon the "target of opportunity" and moved fast to brief President Trump, who was at Mar-a-Lago. Defense sources explained to Bloomberg that Soleimani wasn't being monitored before it was known he was coming through Baghdad's international airport.

(FORT BRAGG, N.C.) — Hundreds of U.S. soldiers deployed Saturday from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Kuwait to serve as reinforcements in the Middle East amid rising tensions following the U.S. killing of a top Iranian general.
Lt. Col. Mike Burns, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, told The Associated Press 3,500 members of the division’s quick-deployment brigade, known officially as its Immediate Response Force, will have deployed within a few days. The most recent group of service members to deploy will join about 700 who left earlier in the week, Burns said.
A loading ramp at Fort Bragg was filled Saturday morning with combat gear and restless soldiers. Some tried to grab a last-minute nap on wooden benches. Reporters saw others filing onto buses.
The additional troop deployments reflect concerns about potential Iranian retaliatory action in the volatile aftermath of Friday’s drone strike that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force who has been blamed for attacks on U.S. troops and American allies going back decades.
President Donald Trump ordered the airstrike near Baghdad’s international airport. Iran has vowed retribution, raising fears of an all-out war, but it’s unclear how or when a response might come.
Reporters weren’t able to interview the soldiers leaving Fort Bragg on Saturday, but an airman loading one of the cargo planes told an Army cameraman he was making New Year’s plans when he got a call to help load up the soldiers, according to video footage released by the military.
“We’re responsible for loading the cargo. Almost our whole squadron got alerted. Like a bunch of planes are coming over here,” the unnamed airman said. “I was getting ready to go out for New Year’s when they called me.”
In the gray early morning light Saturday, Army video showed soldiers dressed in camouflage fatigues filing into planes, carrying rucksacks and rifles. Humvees were rolled onto another cargo plane and chained in place for the flight to the Middle East.
Burns said the soldiers within the Immediate Response Force train constantly to be ready to respond quickly to crises abroad. When called by their superiors, they have two hours to get to base with their gear and must maintain a state of readiness so that they can be in the air headed to their next location within 18 hours.
“So whether they were on leave, whether they were home drinking a beer, whether they were, you know, hanging out, throwing the kids up in the yard, you get the call and it’s time to go,” he said.
He said that soldiers typically keep individual “go-bags” of their personal gear with them at their living quarters.
The wife of a member of the 82nd Airborne who deployed earlier this week said his departure was so abrupt she didn’t have the chance to say goodbye in person or by phone.
April Shumard said she was at work on New Year’s Eve and he was watching their five children when he texted her that he had to rush to base. He wasn’t sure if it was a drill or a deployment. She said her husband has been in the military since 2010 and has already deployed twice to Afghanistan. But with those prior deployments, the family had much more time to prepare and say goodbye. This time, she got a second message confirming he was leaving, and he departed in a plane on the afternoon of New Year’s Day.
“The kids kept going, ‘When’s Dad going to be home?’” said Shumard, 42. “It’s literally thrown me for a loop. And him as well. He’s still in disbelief of where he’s gone. Our heads are spun.”
She said that Fayetteville is a tight-knit community, and she expects people to work together to support families who are suddenly missing a parent.
“This was so last-minute,” she said, urging people to reach out to 82nd Airborne families. “Just try to help out whoever you know who might need some babysitting or help or just get some groceries and bring it to their house.”
(MINSK, Belarus) — Belarus has reached an agreement with Russia for limited oil supplies after Moscow earlier this week stopped supplying crude amid stalled talks on strengthening economic ties between the neighboring countries.
Belarusian state-run oil company Belneftekhim said Saturday that the country’s refineries started receiving the first batch of crude oil, sufficient to ensure “non-stop operation of the country’s refineries in January 2020.”
Russian pipeline operator Transneft confirmed earlier on Saturday it would transfer 133,000 tons of oil to Belarus.
According to a statement from Belneftekhim, the oil would come at a discounted price while negotiations for resuming regular imports continue.
Russia stopped supplying oil to its post-Soviet neighbor after Dec. 31, as the two countries failed to renegotiate oil prices for this year amid stalled talks on further strengthening economic ties.
The suspension did not affect oil transit to Europe or the supply of natural gas but had consequences for Belarus. which relies on Russia for more than 80% of its overall energy needs.
The country’s two refineries were operating at low capacity, running on reserves. On Friday, Minsk announced it was suspending its own oil exports, which contribute up to 20% of annual GDP.
The Kremlin has recently increased pressure on Belarus, raising energy prices and cutting subsidies. It argues that Belarus should accept greater economic integration if it wants to continue receiving energy resources at Russia’s domestic prices.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko held two rounds of talks in December but failed to reach an agreement on the closer ties and on oil and gas prices.
Putin said Russia was not ready to “subsidize” energy supplies without more economic integration with ally Belarus. Lukashenko insisted he would not sign off on the integration until the issues with oil and gas supplies were resolved.
American musician P!nk has pledged to donate $500,000 to local fires services fighting Australia’s devastating wildfires, and other celebrities have announced plans to donate as well.
For months, Australia has been fighting the worst wildfires it’s experienced in decades, which scientists say have been intensified by climate change. At least 19 people have died, dozens are missing, hundreds of homes have been destroyed and, according to Bloomberg, nearly half a billion animals may have been killed. As TIME’s Amy Gunia reports, “The fire season in Australia is far from over, and already it is shaping up to be one of the most intense in the country’s history.”

(CHICAGO) — The U.S. men’s soccer team has canceled its plan to train in Doha, Qatar, from Jan. 5-25 “due to the developing situation in the region.”
The U.S. Soccer Federation announced the decision Friday, a day after a U.S. military air strike killed a top Iranian military commander.
The Americans will move training to a site in the United States that has not yet been determined. They will be use a roster of players mostly from Major League Soccer ahead of an exhibition against Costa Rica on Feb. 1 in Carson, California.
The USSF said it hopes to train in the future at Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup.
(JAKARTA, Indonesia) — Landslides and floods triggered by torrential downpours have left at least 53 people dead in and around Indonesia’s capital, as rescuers struggled to search for people apparently buried under tons of mud, officials said Saturday.
Monsoon rains and rising rivers submerged a dozen districts in the greater Jakarta area and caused landslides that buried at least a dozen people.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Agus Wibowo said the fatalities included those who had drowned or been electrocuted since rivers broke their banks early Wednesday after extreme torrential rains hit on New Year’s Eve. Three elderly people died of hypothermia.
It’s the worst flooding in the area since 2007, when 80 people were killed over 10 days.
Rescuers recovered more bodies as flash floods and mudslides destroyed Sukamulia village in Bogor district. They were searching for a villager who was missing in a landslide in Lebak, a district in neighboring Banten province, Wibowo said.
The number of fatalities was expected to increase, with rescuers and villagers also searching for at least three people believed to be buried in another landslide in Cigudeg village in Bogor district, said Ridwan, the village’s secretary, who goes by a single name.
Ridwan said bad weather, blackouts and mudslides were hampering rescue efforts. He said rescuers on Saturday managed to reach eight hamlets that had been isolated for days by cut-off roads and mudslides and rescued more than 1,700 villagers in weak condition.
Four days after the region of 30 million people was struck by flash floods, waters have receded in many middle-class districts, but conditions remained grim in narrow riverside alleys where the city’s poor live.
Government data showed that some 173,000 people were still unable to return home and were crammed at damp emergency shelters, mostly in the hardest-hit area of Bekasi. Much of the city was still submerged in muddy waters up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) high, according to the disaster agency.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said that more downpours were forecast for the capital in the coming days, and that the potential for extreme rainfall will continue until next month across the vast archipelago nation. The government on Friday started cloud seeding in an attempt to divert rain clouds from reaching greater Jakarta to prevent possible flooding, the agency said.
Indonesia is hit by deadly floods each year, and Jakarta, the capital of Southeast Asia’s largest economy, is not immune. But this year’s have been particulary bad, with about 397,000 people seeking refuge in shelters across the greater metropolitan area as floodwaters reached up to 6 meters (19 feet) in some places.
(SYDNEY) — Australia’s prime minister called up about 3,000 reservists on Saturday as the threat of wildfires escalated in at least three states, while strong winds and high temperatures were forecast to bring flames to populated areas including the suburbs of Sydney.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said 23 people had died in the wildfires so far this summer, including two in a blaze on a highway on Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia state, the latest fatalities.
“We are facing another extremely difficult next 24 hours,” Morrison said at a televised news conference. “In recent times, particularly over the course of the balance of this week, we have seen this disaster escalate to an entirely new level.”
He also confirmed that his scheduled visits to India and Japan later this month have been postponed. He was due to visit India from Jan. 13 to 16 and Japan immediately afterward. Morrison came under fire for taking a family vacation in Hawaii as the wildfire crisis unfolded in December.
He said that the governor general had signed off on the calling up of reserves “to search and bring every possible capability to bear by deploying army brigades to fire-affected communities.”
Defense Minister Linda Reynolds said it was the first time that reservists had been called up “in this way in living memory and, in fact, I believe for the first time in our nation’s history.”
The government has committed 20 million Australian dollars ($14 million) to lease four fire-fighting aircraft for the duration of the crisis, and the helicopter-equipped HMAS Adelaide was deployed to assist evacuations from fire-ravaged areas.
The fire danger increased as temperatures rose to record levels across Australia on Saturday, surpassing 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in Canberra, the capital, and reaching a record-high 48.9 C (120 F) in Penrith, in Sydney’s western suburbs.
As night approached, 3,600 firefighters were battling blazes across New South Wales. Power was lost in some areas as fires downed transmissions lines, and residents were warned that the worst may be yet to come.
“We are now in a position where we are saying to people it’s not safe to move, it’s not safe to leave these areas,” state Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters. “We are in for a long night and I make no bones about that. We are still yet to hit the worst of it.”
The deadly fire on Kangaroo Island broke containment lines Friday and was described as “virtually unstoppable” as it destroyed buildings and burned through more than 14,000 hectares (35,000 acres) of Flinders Chase National Park. While the warning level for the fire was reduced Saturday, the Country Fire Service said it was still a risk to lives and property.
The two men killed on Kangaroo Island were identified as Clayton Lang, 43, a leading plastic and reconstructive surgeon from Adelaide, and bush pilot and safari trip operator Dick Lang, 78.
New South Wales Rural Fire Service Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers warned that the fires could move “frighteningly quick.” Embers carried by the wind had the potential to spark new fires or enlarge existing blazes.
Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fizsimmons said the 264,000-hectare (652,000-acre) Green Wattle Creek fire in a national park west of Sydney could spread into Sydney’s western suburbs.
He said crews have been doing “extraordinary work” by setting controlled fires and using aircraft and machinery to try to keep the flames away.
Fitzsimmons called on residents and tourists in the path of the fires to evacuate as soon as possible.
“Our message has been to make sure you leave yesterday,” he said. “Leaving it until today is cutting it fine. The sooner you make that decision the better, and I would say do it now. Don’t leave it any longer because the window will shrink and will shrink very quickly.”
More than 130 fires were burning in New South Wales, with at least half of them out of control.
Firefighters were battling a total of 53 fires across Victoria state, and conditions were expected to worsen with a southerly wind change. About 900,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) of bushland has already been burned through.
In a rare piece of good news, the number of people listed as missing or unaccounted for in Victoria was reduced from 28 to six.
“We still have those dynamic and dangerous conditions — the low humidity, the strong winds and, what underpins that, the state is tinder dry,” Victoria Emergency Services Commissioner Andrew Crisp said.
Thousands have already fled fire-threatened areas in Victoria, and Crisp urged more people to leave. “If you might be thinking about whether you get out on a particular road close to you, well there’s every chance that a fire could hit that particular road and you can’t get out,” he said.
Victoria police reported heavy traffic flows on major roads and praised motorists for their patient and orderly behavior.
The early and devastating start to Australia’s summer wildfires has already burned about 5 million hectares (12.35 million acres) of land and destroyed more than 1,500 homes. More acres have burned so far than in any one year in the U.S. in around seven decades, when Harry S. Truman was president.
(BAGHDAD) — Thousands took to the streets of Baghdad for the funeral procession of Iran’s top general Saturday after he was killed in a U.S. airstrike, as the region braced for the Islamic Republic to fulfill its vows of revenge.
The day of mourning in the Iraqi capital ended Saturday evening with a series of rockets that were launched and fell inside or near the Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies, including the U.S. Embassy.
Iran has vowed harsh retaliation for the U.S. airstrike ordered early Friday by President Donald Trump that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force and mastermind of its regional security strategy, and several senior Iraqi militants. The attack has caused regional tensions to soar, raising fears of an all-out war, and tested the U.S. alliance with Iraq.
Trump says he ordered the strike, a high-risk decision that was made without consulting Congress or U.S. allies, to prevent a conflict. U.S. officials say Soleimani was plotting a series of attacks that endangered American troops and officials, without providing evidence.
Soleimani was the architect of Iran’s regional policy of mobilizing militias across Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, including in the war against the Islamic State group. He was also blamed for attacks on U.S. troops and American allies going back decades.
Though it’s unclear how or when Iran may respond, any retaliation was likely to come after three days of mourning declared in both Iran and Iraq. All eyes were on Iraq, where America and Iran have competed for influence since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
After the airstrike early Friday, the U.S.-led coalition has scaled back operations and boosted “security and defensive measures” at bases hosting coalition forces in Iraq, a coalition official said on the condition of anonymity according to regulations. Meanwhile, the U.S. has dispatched another 3,000 troops to neighboring Kuwait, the latest in a series of deployments in recent months as the standoff with Iran has worsened.
In a thinly veiled threat, one of the Iran-backed militia, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, or League of the Righteous, called on Iraqi security forces to stay at least 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) away from U.S. bases starting Sunday night.
“The leaders of the security forces should protect their fighters and not allow them to become human shields to the occupying Crusaders,” the warning statement said, in reference to the coalition bases.
An Iraqi security official said there were no injuries reported from the series of rockets launched Sunday evening. A Katyusha rocket that fell inside a square less than one kilometer from the U.S. embassy, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. Another rocket in Baghdad landed about 500 meters from As-Salam palace where the Iraqi President Barham Salih normally stays in Jadriya, a neighborhood adjacent to the Green Zone, the official said.
Another security official said three rockets fell outside an air base north of Baghdad were American contractors are normally present. The rockets landed outside the base in a farm area and there were no reports of damages, according to the official.
Also on Saturday, a spokesman for the Iraqi armed forces said the movement of coalition forces, including U.S. troops, in the air and on the ground will be restricted, conditioned on receiving approval from Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, the commander in chief of the armed forces.
It was not immediately clear what the new restrictions would mean, given that coalition troops were already subject to limitations and had to be coordinated with the Joint Operation Command of top Iraqi military commanders.
NATO temporarily suspended all training activities in Iraq due to safety concerns, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said Saturday.
Iraq’s government, which is closely allied with Iran, condemned the airstrike that killed Soleimani, calling it an attack on its national sovereignty. Parliament is meeting for an emergency session Sunday, and the government has come under mounting pressure to expel the 5,200 American troops based in the country, who are there to help prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State group.
In Baghdad, thousands of mourners, mostly men in black military fatigues, carried Iraqi flags and the flags of Iran-backed militias that are fiercely loyal to Soleimani at Saturday’s ceremony. They were also grieving Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a senior Iraqi militia commander who was killed in the same strike.
The mourners, many of them in tears, chanted “No, No, America,” and “Death to America, death to Israel.” Mohammed Fadl, a mourner dressed in black, said the funeral is an expression of loyalty to the slain leaders. “It is a painful strike, but it will not shake us,” he said.
Helicopters hovered over the procession, which was attended by Abdul-Mahdi and leaders of Iran-backed militias. The procession later made its way to the Shiite holy city of Karbala, where the mourners raised red flags associated with unjust bloodshed and revenge.
The slain Iraqi militants will be buried in Najaf, while Soleimani’s remains will be taken to Iran. More funeral services will be held for Soleimani in Iran on Sunday and Monday, before his body is laid to rest in his hometown of Kerman.
The U.S. has ordered all citizens to leave Iraq and temporarily closed its embassy in Baghdad, where Iran-backed militiamen and their supporters staged two days of violent protests earlier this week in which they breached the compound. Britain and France have warned their citizens to avoid or strictly limit travel in Iraq.
No one was hurt in the embassy protests, which came in response to U.S. airstrikes that killed 25 Iran-backed militiamen in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. blamed the militia for a rocket attack that killed a U.S. contractor in northern Iraq.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have steadily intensified since Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and restore crippling sanctions, which have devastated Iran’s economy and contributed to recent protests there in which hundreds were reportedly killed.
In an apparent effort to defuse tensions, Qatar’s foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, made an unplanned trip to Iran where he met with Rouhani and other senior officials.
Qatar hosts American forces at the Al-Udeid Air Base and shares a massive offshore oil and gas field with Iran.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with various world leaders including Iraqi President Barham Salih, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, of the United Arab Emirates. “I reaffirmed that the U.S. remains committed to de-escalation,” Pompeo tweeted.
As threats of “harsh revenge” against the U.S. looms, major streets in Iran were filled Saturday with billboards and images of Soleimani, who was widely seen as a national icon and a hero of the so-called Axis of Resistance against Western hegemony.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Soleimani’s home in Tehran to express his condolences. “The Americans did not realize what a great mistake they made,” Rouhani said.
On the streets of Tehran, many mourned Soleimani.
“I don’t think there will be a war, but we must get his revenge,” said Hojjat Sanieefar. America “can’t hit and run anymore,” he added.
Another man, who only identified himself as Amir, was worried.
“If there is a war, I am 100% sure it will not be to our betterment. The situation will certainly get worse,” he said.
In a sign of his regional reach, supporters in Lebanon hung billboards commemorating Soleimani in Beirut’s southern suburbs and in southern Lebanon along the disputed border with Israel, according to the state-run National News Agency.
Both are strongholds of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, whose leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has close ties to Soleimani.
Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, including the territory’s Hamas rulers, opened a mourning site for the slain general and dozens gathered to burn American and Israeli flags.
The killing of Soleimani was “a loss for Palestine and the resistance,” said senior Hamas official Ismail Radwan.

“Exaggerated, confused, contradictory and incoherent.” With those words, a judge in a Cyprus courthouse on Dec. 30 dismissed the testimony of a 19-year-old British woman who said she had been forced to sign a retraction after reporting being raped by 12 Israeli men in the popular holiday resort town of Ayia Napa last summer. The judge instead found her guilty on a charge of public mischief, and she now awaits sentencing on Jan. 7.
Susana Pavlou, who attended the hearing in solidarity with the woman, says Judge Michalis Papathanasiou’s ruling was yet another example of the victim-blaming attitudes surrounding the case since the summer. “The way he made his judgement sounded entirely subjective,” says Pavlou, director of the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies, a Cyprus-based NGO focusing on women’s rights and gender equality. “No explanation was given about how he weighed the evidence and why he rejected the testimony of the young woman. We felt intensely that we were just hearing more of the same.”
The case has sparked an outcry in the U.K., where #IBelieveHer and #BoycottCyprus trended on Twitter as news of the decision spread. And in Cyprus, the young woman’s case has electrified women’s rights activists long fighting for reforms to the way authorities handle rape cases, and has prompted pleas for intervention from the country’s current Attorney General.
The woman, who has not been publiclyidentified, is now facing up to a year in jail in Cyprus and a fine of $1,500. She already spent more than a month in prison before being granted bail at the end of August, and has not been allowed to leave the island. “This woman has been punished enough,” Nicoletta Charalambidou, a Cyprus-based lawyer on her legal defense team, told TIME ahead of the sentencing on Jan. 7. “It’s brought a whole range of consequences into her life.”
From Victim to Suspect
On July 17, the young woman reported the crime to police just hours after the incident allegedly took place in her hotel room in Ayia Napa, where she had been on a working vacation. (Ayia Napa’s popularity as a tourist destination draws young people from across Europe to work there in hospitality industries over the busy summer season.) She told police that she had been raped by up to 12 young Israeli men; the same day, 12 men were arrested in connection with the complaint.
In an earlier court hearing in December, the woman said that she had initially agreed to consensual sex with one of the group. But the trial this week referred to a video recording of the incident, found on the phones of some of the Israeli men. The woman’s lawyers said that it showed her having consensual sex with one of the group, while telling the other men to leave as they attempted to enter the room. Judge Papathanasiou referred to the video in his decision, saying that the woman had felt “embarrassed” because of its existence and that was “the reason why she initially gave false statements.”
Ten days after the incident was reported, on July 27,the woman was asked to go to a local police station where she retracted her statement. She has since said that she was forced to do so by the Cyprus police, who deny the allegation.Michael Polak, director of Justice Abroad and part of the young woman’s legal team, says that the lack of footage from the police station in Cyprus likely contributed to this. “Nothing is caught on tape or video, so that creates an environment where people can be put under pressure.” According to lawyer Charalambidou, the young woman was also kept at the police station for eight hours without a lawyer on July 27, the day she retracted her statement, and was not properly informed of her rights. She also says that the woman’s right to interpretation and translation were violated. “It was never clear, and still not clear in my opinion, when she ceased to be a victim of a crime and became a suspect of another crime,” says Charalambidou. “She was asked to come into the police station on July 27 as a victim, and she came out as a suspect of committing the crime of public mischief. The line there is very blurred.”
The woman was arrested and detained immediately after retracting the statement, while the men, some of whom are minors, were released and returned home to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv on July 29. A group of them were filmed and photographed popping champagne bottles while chanting “Am Yisrael Chai” (the people of Israel live) along with “the Brit is a whore,” according to local media.
The woman’s trial began at the start of October with the verdict delayed until Dec. 30. The 12 men were not required to give evidence at the trial — a decision Polak calls suprising. But a pathologist called to give evidence examined the woman’s injuries from photographs and found them consistent with her testimony. He also told the court that there was blood on a used condom found inside the hotel room, as well as DNA from three of the young men inside the condom. “He was quite clear with his evidence that it supported what she was saying,” says Polak.
However, the woman’s legal team say the judge did not want to link the rape case with the actual public mischief case, thus shutting down a major line of defense. “During the trial, the judge on a number of occasions said ‘It’s not about the rape, I don’t want to hear about the rape case,’ so he had closed his mind to one of the major elements,” says Polak. The BBC reported that as Papathanasiou delivered the verdict, he said that “there was no rape or violence,” and that police had thoroughly investigated the case, “making all necessary arrests.”
The woman is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, hallucinations, and a condition called hypersomnia that causes her to sleep for 18-20 hours a day, according to her mother. “She needs to get home as soon as possible so she can get the proper treatment,” says Polak. Her family has traveled from Britain to Cyprus to support her through the legal process, which has also led to the young woman losing her place at university. The family has started a crowdfunder to help with the high cost of legal fees.
As the case developed this week, so did diplomatic tensions, as U.K. government officials called the situation “deeply distressing.” The U.K. Foreign Office can get involved in cases abroad where they believe a British national’s human rights and right to a fair trial have been breached. On Dec. 30, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab expressed “serious concern” about the case and said that he will raise the matter with Cypriot authorities — a move the young woman’s family has welcomed.
Problems in the System
For those following the case in Cyprus closely, the verdict did not come as a surprise. “We knew it from July, when the accusation of rape came up, that the system would fail this woman,” says Zelia Gregoriou, associate professor at the University of Cyprus and founding member of the Network Against Violence Against Women, a group that demonstrated in solidarity with the woman at the courthouse earlier this week, wearing scarves around their faces with images of lips sewn shut. “Every rape claim is treated pre-emptively as a false rape claim, and that’s why we had to be there. It’s not the exception.” Gregoriou says female victims are often threatened by the police, and warned that they will be exposed and publicly humiliated.
Cyprus ratified the U.N. Convention on preventing and combating violence against women in 2017, six years after the treaty was opened for signature. Yet experts say its measures have not been fully implemented and that the country’s authorities are not doing enough to protect women and support survivors.
“This has been the year our broken system has been exposed, whether it’s the criminal justice system, whether it’s the social welfare system, whether it’s our victim support and protection system — this year has revealed just how broken it is,” says Pavlou. A 2014 E.U. survey found that 15% of women aged 18–74 years in Cyprus said they experienced intimate partner physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. According to a 2018 Amnesty International report, Cyprus has the E.U.’s highest rate of reporting sexual violence to the police, yet experts say that the conviction rate in such cases is low, and that women are often not taken seriously by the authorities.
In June, the country was also rocked by the trial of its first ever known serial killer, when a Greek-Cypriot army officer was handed multiple life sentences for killing five foreign women and two of their children over the course of three years. As more details about the case emerged, questions were raised about the failure of the police to properly investigate the disappearances of these women. “The whole sequence of the various authorities and the way they treat violence against women is problematic,” says Charalambidou. “It’s not a surprise that this case [involving the British woman] is treated in the same way and the same manner.”
Experts say high numbers of cases involving rape and sexual assault drop out of the criminal justice system for a variety of reasons, including victims retracting their statements. Several studies have linked this trend to a lack of support for those who report rape and sexual assault. “Certainly, we don’t have specialized services, like rape crisis centers, so [the British woman] wasn’t offered them because they don’t exist,” Pavlou says.
Rallying Support
The case has energized local women’s rights activists in Cyprus, who say they felt a duty to protect the British woman from the outset of the case. In October, the Mediterranean Gender Institute complained to the country’s broadcast and journalism regulators about the victim-blaming narratives in the media coverage surrounding the case. On Dec. 15, the country’s Journalist Ethics Committee found that several media outlets had violated the young woman’s right to privacy, and that coverage included discrimination based on her gender. Pavlou says that if the sentencing on Jan. 7 is severe, her organization, along with other NGOs that form the Cyprus Women’s Lobby group, is prepared to appeal to the president of Cyprus to intervene.
As Tuesday’s sentencing approaches, Gregoriou plans to return to the courthouse along with several dozen demonstrators. She sees this case as part of a broader struggle in Cyprus. “We fight violence against the British woman and we fight violence against every woman,” says Gregoriou. And after a difficult year for women’s rights in the country, some are hopeful that this case can bring about much-needed change. “We do not have a culture of protest in Cyprus, but we’re seeing that come very much to the fore in recent months,” says Pavlou. “We won’t stay silent, women are speaking up, social media is on fire and that’s all very heartening for us.”
These acts of solidarity have helped give the young woman the strength to continue the case, according to her lawyer. “She feels very supported through social media and messages coming through from the local network in Cyprus, from Israel, from the U.K.,” says Charalambidou. The legal team is currently preparing the ground of appeal, and is willing to take the case to the Supreme Court in Cyprus and potentially the European Court of Human Rights — a lengthy procedure that could last for as many as four years.
“It’s a slow process, but our client definitely wants to pursue all available procedures to clear her name and fight for her rights,” says Charalambidou, who says it is a test case with the potential for impact on Cyprus’ justice system. “Our client is sending a message that she’s not only doing it for herself, but she believes that something has to change in the way that these kinds of cases are handled by states in general, not just in Cyprus.”

Are you seeing the benefits of running marketing webinars to capture and nurture leads but wondering how you can scale these efforts up? It can take several days of work just to plan, prepare, promote, deliver and follow up on a single webinar. This makes it super challenging to justify investing in more and more webinars, no matter how fruitful each webinar you produce is. Besides, today's buyers are less interested in sharing personal information and contact details only to enter a sales funnel that flows at whatever pace a marketer hopes is most likely to be optimized for conversions.

By Vrishti BeniwalIndia's Finance Ministry has delivered a challenge to its revenue collectors: meet tax targets despite $20 billion of corporate tax cuts.Through a video conference on Dec. 16, officials were exhorted to meet the direct tax mop-up target of 13.4 trillion rupees ($187 billion), a government official told reporters. Collection in the eight months to November grew at 5% from a year earlier, against the desired 17%.The missive shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's urgent need to buoy public finances in a slowing economy where April-November tax collections were half the amount budgeted. Authorities withheld some payments to states and have capped ministries' expenditure as the fiscal deficit ballooned beyond target. The government's efforts to maintain its deficit goal goes against advice from some quarters, including central bank Governor Shaktikanta Das, who urged more spending to spur economic growth. 73104592 It's uncertain though how much room Modi's administration has to boost expenditure, given that it may already be borrowing as much as 540 billion rupees through state-run companies, a figure that isn't reflected on the federal balance sheet. Uncertainty about public finances pushed up sovereign yields in November and December, compelling Das to announce unconventional policies to keep costs in check."This is not a time to conceal the fiscal deficit by off-budget borrowing or deferring payments," said Indira Rajaraman, an economist and a former member of the Reserve Bank of India's board. "If they were to stick to the target, that would be catastrophic because there is so much pump priming that is needed right now."India's gross domestic product grew 4.5% in the quarter ended September, the slowest pace in more than six years as both consumption and investments cooled in Asia's third-largest economy. Only government spending supported the expansion, piling pressure on Modi to keep stimulating.S&P Global Ratings warned in December it may downgrade India's sovereign ratings if economic growth doesn't recover. 73104594 Government support seems to be waning now, with ministries asked to cap spending in the final quarter of the financial year at 25% of the amount budgeted rather than 33% allowed earlier. This new rule will hamstring sectors including agriculture, aviation and coal, where not even half of annual targets have been disbursed. As the federal government runs short of money, it's been delaying payouts to state administrations. Private hospitals have threatened to suspend cash-less services to government employees over non-payment of dues, while a builder informed the stock exchange about delayed rental payments from no less than the tax office itself.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has refused to comment on the deficit goal before an official presentation due Feb. 1.A deviation from target, if any, "will need to be balanced with a credible consolidation plan further-out," said Radhika Rao, an economist at DBS Group Holdings Ltd. in Singapore.--With assistance from Subhadip Sircar.
Key to a great online shopping experience is the final delivery of that box home — on time, always, intact — come rain, hailstorm, blistering summers or the cold wave currently sweeping across most of north India. The experience that starts on a shopping app ends with a delivery agent knocking on the door. Unlike brickand-mortar retail, where buyers get to see and feel the product before buying, online shoppers wait impatiently for the delivery boy to arrive so the package can be opened."Behind all the tech wizardry, it is the courier boy who is key to ecommerce running smoothly," says Devangshu Dutta, CEO of Third Eyesight, a consulting firm specialising in retail. "Millions of dollars have been poured into gaining market share and now there is a race to improve services so buyers keep returning to the app and don't have to worry about late deliveries." Untitled Carousel 73100994 Keeping the $30 billion ecommerce engine running smoothly are lakhs of delivery agents zipping around on two-wheelers in the metros as well as smaller cities such as Nagpur, Coimbatore, Vizag and Mathura, with boxes and food carts. The delivery boom has created a massive new sector of employment that has pulled in a diverse demographic of workers from various sectors. For some, typically those younger than 35 and with limited formal education, it is often a riskier but more lucrative pursuit compared with say an office job. This was the experience of Sundarraj B (see "Delivery with a Dream"). For many above 35, it can be something of a lifeline as they find malls and become more reluctant to hire them, as Manjoosha Mishra Batch found out (see Courier was the Best Option").Roshni Patel, a Nagpur-based delivery associate with two years of experience, day starts at 7:30 am at the warehouse of one of the largest e-commerce companies in India. "I deliver on an average 50 packets. In about five hours, I am done for the day. I make around `15,000 to 17,000 a month and am happy," says Her husband also delivers couriers, Amazon in Nagpur. If not ecommerce, most of them might have ended up doing odd jobs and many may not have been able to move and live in a big city. With limited employable skills, many of them would not have earned nearly as much as what the delivery boom has afforded them. It is not just the delivery agents. Our increasing propensity to turn to our smartphone for all our needs means a range of service providers such as plumbers, electricians and beauticians are also able to enhance their earnings, upskill and achieve greater stability through apps.Train & Earn"Our professionals earn between `30,000 and `35,000 a month. In exceptional cases, it can be `1 lakh as well," says Varun Khaitan, cofounder of UrbanClap. In 2018, UrbanClap had around 12,000 professionals, which scaled to 30,000 in 2019 and this year, it expects to have 75,000. Half of them do home repair jobs (plumbing, electricals, etc) and the rest offer beauty and wellness services. The latter category mostly comprises of women. 73103194 At food delivery provider Zomato, which has operations across 550 cities in India, an army of almost 2.5 lakh are engaged in delivering orders. They average 1.5 orders an hour and do about 15 orders in 10 hours. The delivery partners mostly come from villages adjoining cities where they work. They must have a driving licence and scooter or bike. The delivery men are put through a two-part training — in-app and in-person. The former helps them understand how to take delivery orders and complete them, while the latter teaches them road safety, technical and financial know-how, soft skills and basic etiquette.Considering that work is focused around standard breakfast, lunch and dinner hours and increases on weekends, Zomato has a lot of part-timers who are either studying or engaged in secondary or primary professions elsewhere. They log-on to the platform only for certain hours a day. Urban Clap also mostly has independent contractors. The startup keeps a commission of 20% out of the fee."They are typically able to earn 2X once they join the platform. It has been transformational in their life," Khaitan says.UrbanClap takes semi-skilled professionals and soon will start onboarding unskilled staff and train them for the tasks. "The challenge is in getting trained manpower. We expect to have 75,000 professionals on the platform this year," he adds. "The challenge is to have the right checks and balances and achieve the perfect customer experience," says Mohit Sardana, COO of Zomato's food delivery unit.Working for companies such as these also entails a gradual shift from blue-collar environments to white-collar perks. Companies are offering provident fund contributions and accident covers, as well as providing loans for delivery staff to acquire two-wheelers.At Zomato and UrbanClap, partners and delivery staff are covered against accidents by Acko, an insurance startup."There is a lot of pressure on logistics providers — to ensure timely and voluminous delivery while ensuring rider safety. It is contingent upon companies to ensure metrics are up (on-time delivery, intact packets, no thefts, etc)," says Dutta of Third Eyesight. Hey Deedee, a courier companythat exclusively employs women, has 600 staffers in 10 cities. It aims to hire 10,000 more and add at least two new cities a month. Employees (in Mumbai) earn a base salary of `8,700 and an additional `18 per packet delivered. Revathi Roy, founder, Hey Deedee, says: "We run a skilling centre at the backend. We make the associate go through a training course on martial arts and customer interface. How to behave, how to not drink anything while at a customer's place and to maintain distance."The on-road staff is tracked via GPS and Hey Deedee pays for petrol and even offers insurance, PF contributions and loans to buy scooters. "It is not a cakewalk. Sitting and doing data entry is far easier. Just the other day, one of our staffers met with an accident while crossing the road to deliver a packet," says Roy.Success of ecommerce depends on them. Risks are high, so are the rewards — both for the delivery agents and the ecommerce companies trying hard to ensure customers keep coming back for more.'Courier was the Best Option'Manjoosha Mishra Batch was just 27 when she lost her husband, who used to run a small business and left no savings behind. That was the first time Batch, who has passed Class XII, stepped out of her home in Mumbai to look for work and support her two children. A string of odd jobs followed, including cleaning and wrapping packets and boxes at the super market or working as a typist. "I used to work 14 hours a day for around `8,000 a month," recalls Batch, now 42. 73103200 She thought the expanding retail business, with new malls opening frequently, will open up opportunities. The reality was different. "I was overage and was rejected everywhere. They hire only those below 35," says Batch, who had relocated from Sagar in Madhya Pradesh to Mumbai after her wedding. That is when she came to know about Hey Deedee, an e-commerce delivery startup, which hires only women and whose clients include the two top e-commerce companies in India. "They taught me how to drive a scooter and helped me with a loan to buy an Activa," says Batch. Over two months of training, she learnt how to use delivery apps, read maps, how to interact with customers and the dos and don'ts (like to avoid entering any house or to refuse any drink offered other than water, and that also only if she has asked for it).Her day now starts at 8:00 am at the warehouse, collecting on an average 30 couriers, each weighing between 1 and 1.5 kg. On holidays, she delivers 60-80 couriers. The more she delivers, the more she gets paid, at `18 per courier. There are problems like customers not being available, or not answering the phone to confirm whether they are at the delivery address. "There is no saving as the `14,000 I make covers our living expenses including the children's education. But it is better than slogging 14 hours a day. Now I start my day at 8:00 am and end at 4:30 pm," says Batch.Delivery with a DreamSundarraj B loves rains. And much like the extra toppings on the pizzas, he also loves the extra money he gets when targets are met or exceeded. Roy works for Zomato as a delivery partner. A rainy day means `15 extra per delivery. On festivals, it is `200 extra per day and for exceeding 10 orders a day, it is `400 extra. If he can manage 24 deliveries per day, it is `800 extra over the `720 he gets (at `30 per delivery), making it a cool `1,520 for the day. 73103202 Bengaluru-based Sundarraj, 35, used to work with delivery startup Runnr, which was acquired by Zomato in 2017. "It's a difficult job as targets are stiff and you start making good money only when you exceed targets," says Sundarraj, who originally hails from a village close to Mysuru. He moved to Bengaluru in search of a job and started working at a hearing aid clinic as a marketing executive. The clinic paid him `12,000 a month. The clinic folded up and once again Sundarraj was looking for a job."Office job with my kind of skills would not pay more than `15,000 without any room for extra money. That's when I looked at delivery jobs, where there was opportunity to earn extra if you worked longer," says Sundarraj, who stays with his daughter and wife in Bengaluru. Now he earns `32,000-40,000 a month. Sundarraj delivers in a 5 km radius around Kormangala and often frets when he has to deliver food on the 7th or 10th floor. "Some people come down or midway to collect their orders, but many don't. That elongates delivery time."Late night deliveries are also good for the `30 extra for such orders. "I am saving to open a restaurant, actually an online kitchen, where I'll employ chefs and delivery boys. The market is really growing fast," adds Sundarraj.
The unusual cold wave in north India last weekend forced Seema Sharma to rush out of her Noida apartment to buy a heater. She enquired about all the options, effectiveness of various models, prices and the maintenance requirement before zeroing in on a model. Despite the weather pushing her, she decided that she was not going to overlook one parameter — power consumption. "Hefty electricity bills are usual in summers because of use of air conditioning. So I am conscious of power usage ratings and go for appliances that consume less electricity. I don't want a power guzzling heater just to keep warm," says Sharma, 32, who chose a quartz heater over a fan heater.Sharma's decision-making process highlights a key factor that consumers consider while buying appliances nowadays: how to keep power consumption down while ensuring optimum output.Even the makers of such household appliances have, over the past few years, focused on improving efficiency of their products — be it heaters, geysers, air cons, refrigerators, blubs, TVs, microwaves or washing machines — while keeping electricity bills low. Stricter regulations and technology innovations have helped the electricals and white goods industry achieve this, while also enabling features like inter-connected appliances and remote operations.Take lighting. An average light bulb used to consume 100 watts of energy. Now, LED bulbs consume just one-tenth of that energy yet can give similar or more brightness. This has been brought about even as lighting tech has evolved from incandescent, fluorescent, discharge lamps, CFLs to LEDs. More than two billion LED lamps have been sold in India in the last four-five years, says Sumit Padmakar Joshi, vicechairman and MD, Signify Innovations India (formerly Philips Lighting India). "Efficiency of the LED chip, its optical light distribution and LED electronics has improved significantly over this period, resulting in higher overall luminous efficacy and more energy efficient lighting systems." He says the efficiency of LED bulbs will improve as technology evolves further. "We also expect significant improvements in other lighting factors as well, such as quality of light, lower glare, better light distribution, color consistency, lesser visible flickering, etc," he adds.Improvements in LED technology is impacting televisions as well — LED TVs consume one-third of the power of the cathode ray tube TVs and less than the previous generations LCDs. The big power guzzling equipment at home that can inflate electricity bills — air conditioners — are also getting smarter and better. Most of the market has shifted to inverter air cons, which adjust the speed of the compressor to control the refrigerant (gas) flow thereby consuming less power. Unlike older air cons, an inverter machine eliminates waste by modulating motor speed. 73102974 Vijay Babu, VP, home appliances, LG India, says, "Inverter tech has not only reduced power consumption but also improved durability of products."Earlier, air cons used to have fixed speed technology and there was no mandatory Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Star Rating. Now air cons follow Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER) introduced by BEE, which is under the ministry of power. Inverter air cons became popular in 2018-19 and now comprise 70% of the entire air con market, says an industry estimate.Similarly, cooling gasses and refrigerants have also become more environment friendly and less-power consuming. Refrigerators come with vacuum panels as an insulation between the inner plastic liner and the outer steel casing — the better insulation you have the less energy you have to pump out. The result: a fridge today uses one-third of the energy of one made a decade ago.Eric Braganza, president, Haier India, says, "Compressor design, changes in refrigerant are behind these improvements. Cooling is up and so is efficiency." He also points to changes in motor design — using brushless motors which consume less power — as a reason for power savings for consumers. Haier has a manufacturing unit in Pune and is opening another one in Greater Noida is 2020.Pradeep Jain, managing director of Jaina Group, which markets Sansui products in India, says, "Certified refrigerators use up to 40% less power than models sold a decade back. All the innovations around LEDs, electronic components, chipsets, coolants, coils, etc, over the last few years have a common goal: higher efficiency and lower power consumption."While innovation and regulations have improved appliances, there is a lot more that can be squeezed out of these devices. Much of that improvement relies on digital technologies. Haier's Braganza is betting on connected devices leading to more efficiency and better user experiences. Appliances embedded with Internet of Things sensors will help you to monitor and operate from anywhere via your smartphone. Such washing machines and TVs can sense the environment and maybe even your thoughts. Signify sees illumination and IoT working together to usher in an era of connected lighting. Says Joshi, "We are positioning ourselves as a lighting company for Internet of Things."Jain sees better and low power-consuming devices being launched almost every year now. He credits the gains to use of better materials and newer technologies, including IoT and nanotechnology. An electrical engineer working with a large appliances maker says, "Each next-gen technology helps eliminate wastage in running motors and components and this results in better products." Besides, a decade on, many appliances could be custom-made in home on 3D printers. While white goods wait for that ultra-smart era, for now, expect more connected and lower power consuming appliances as this exceptionally cold wave gives way to hot weather.shelley.singh@timesgroup.com Pradeep Jain, managing director of Jaina Group, which markets Sansui products in India, says, "Certified refrigerators use up to 40% less power than models sold a decade back. The Railway Board is all set to be overhauled. Last month, the cabinet gave its nod to restructure the apex decision-making body of the Indian Railways (IR), a reformist move that could bring in nimbleness and corporate work ethics to the sarkari transport behemoth.According to the cabinet decision, four of the eight permanent board members will be dispensed with; experts with 30 years' experience will be brought in as independent members; and the chairman will be redesignated as the chief executive officer (CEO).Crucially, the IR will now have just one cadre, the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), which could at one stroke end the long history of rivalry among the eight services, thereby unlocking stalled projects and ushering in innovation and expansion. The target of the latest reform is apparent: the government transporter, which ferries 23 million passengers a day, must pick up speed instead of just chugging along.Explaining the rationale behind the government's move, Railway Board chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav told ET Magazine that the servicewise split on the board, with each member holding on to her turf, had become a major hurdle in the Railways' expansion. "A member's viewpoint, in the present set-up, is considered final as far as her department is concerned. The chairman only coordinates inter-departmental issues and takes some policy decisions. At times, such a division of power at the board level is detrimental to the Railways' growth," says Yadav, whose tenure has been extended by one year till December 31, 2020, paving the way for his becoming IR's first CEO. 73102088 For example, no one would contest that IR should electrify its routes, discarding more and more diesel locomotives, but the railway data shows that there are still about 6,000 diesel locos as against 5,600 electric engines. It also has to be noted that the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) with 1,074 officers still lags behind the 1,349-officer-strong Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME). Hypothetically, if the board member representing mechanical engineers does not agree with a suggestion to downsize its cadre, it could stonewall IR's larger goal of pan-India electrification.Even the indigenously designed Train 18 project, which has so far rolled out only two semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express trains, faced inter-departmental hurdles, officials say. Former general manager of Integral Coach Factory and the man behind the project, Sudhanshu Mani, says the decision-making at the board often faces hurdles because of departmentalism. "Now, the chairman of the railway board will not just be first among the equals; he will be a true CEO at whose desk the buck will stop," says Mani, welcoming the move.Goodbye to compartmentsSo, what's next? A group of ministers (GoM), likely to be headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is expected to settle two things in the next three months — one, how to combine eight services with specialisations such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, accounting, personnel et al; and two, finalise the modality of recruiting new IRMS probationers.Officials say the IR is weighing the possibility of recruiting both engineers and nonengineers through the Union Public Service Commission's common civil services examination, which also selects officers for the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Revenue Service, etc. This means the Engineering Services Examination, which selects officers for five out of eight railway services, will become redundant. IR will now provide the UPSC with its exact requirement of engineers, e.g. for electrical and mechanical. The UPSC, will, in turn, choose them from candidates having those as optional subjects. The government, it's learnt, may also make it mandatory to select non-engineers — e.g. for accounting, traffic and personnel — from a few disciplines such as economics and commerce, restricting the entry of recruits with optional subjects such as history, political science, sociology, among others. However, this will have to wait till the GoM takes a final call. 73102095 What will immediately come into effect is the restructuring of the board, which includes appointments of only four members — for infrastructure, operations and business development, rolling stock and finance. Also, the IR will be allowed to have independent members with 30 years of experience in the fields of industry, finance, economics and management. The formal designation of the CEO will also happen soon. The reforms have sent a large section of the 8,401 railway officers into a tizzy. They are concerned about a likely shrinking of their promotional avenues. The officers, who have refused to come on record on this, say they are waiting for the government's final notification which will have the fine print. For now, what seems clear is that each of those 8,401 will be an IRMS officer. There's a silver lining. Though the government's move to trim the Railway Board has made redundant four member posts that are equivalent to secretary of GoI, the IR will gain, thanks to these reforms. The apex-level officers will soon be 34 as against 10 now, as the government has decided to bestow the rank and pay of a GoI secretary to 27 general managers and two directors general, one of whom will be attached to the chairman for handling human resources. Former chairman of the Railway Board, SS Khurana, says the government's recent move is an attempt to disrupt a time-tested mechanism. "The problem with the Railways is not departmentalism. It's a well-coordinated organisation that runs some 22,000 trains 24x7. The introduction of the CEO concept will bring in authoritarianism and destroy a system that has evolved over 100 years," he says. But the government has made up its mind to bite the bullet. Its reforms go beyond what a 2015 panel headed by Bibek Debroy, now an adviser to the prime minister, had recommended. The Debroy panel, which had former cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar as a member, had recommended the merging of the eight services into two — the Indian Railway Technical Service (IRTechS) comprising five engineering services (IRSE, IRSSE, IRSEE, IRSME and IRSS), and the Indian Railway Logistics Service (IRLogS), comprising non-technical services (IRAS, IRPS and IRTS).The government has now collapsed all services into one. Says Yadav: "We went by the Prakash Tandon committee's recommendations of 1994. We were apprehensive that even if there are two services, there would be infighting. There can be some balance if eight services fight, but not when two fight. So, we decided to go for one service."
KOLKATA: Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) intends to blend inherently unsteady renewable power with power from steady generation sources including coal-fired thermal plants."The objective of blending is to make firm power available round the clock in order to meet the requirements of various distribution companies, commercial and industrial consumers," SECI said in an expression of interest (EoI) invited from generators of hydro, pumped storage, gas, battery storage, and thermal generation sources including captive power plants.Blending, according to SECI's EoI document, would allow it to provide round the clock supply to consumers to meet their baseload and enhance renewable penetration at DISCOM and other consumers. It is also expected to cater to the requirements of consumers by providing them round the clock firm power by blending RE power with the power from hydro, gas, pumped storage, thermal sources of energy. It will also allow commercial and industrial consumers who have captive plants to meet their renewable power purchase obligation through the purchase of renewable power through long or medium-term open access. SECI may sign power purchase agreements with generators, the validity of which may vary from one to 25 years as per consumer requirements and shall be for those blocks in a day where renewable power falls short in meeting the conditions of round the clock firm power.

San Francisco: The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has confirmed that the company will be making a rare official appearance after 28 years at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. At the event, Apple executive Jane Horvath is scheduled to speak on a consumer privacy panel on 7 January, reports Digitaltrends. Horvath will be present with Facebook Procter and Gamble executives along officials from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to discuss how companies can establish privacy protections in terms of size, regulation, and consumer demand.Additionally, the company will be showing off its HomeKit smart home platform as Apple's top two rivals Amazon and Google are expected to roll out new update that will add more capabilities to their IoT-powered devices.Apple formally participated in the CES back in 1992 in Chicago when its then CEO John Sculley appeared at a summit to release the Newton device. Apart from CES, Known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had recently revealed that the iPhone maker is planning to launch a high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an A14X chip in the third quarter of 2020 and six new iPhones models.Additionally, the 5G variant of the Apple iPhone 12 may come with advanced image sensor-shift stabilisation technology to click stable images without distortion when there is excessive motion.
Exercise is a key part of staying healthy, but figuring out how to get more active can be tough. If you're not used to physical activity, start slow. Go for 10 to 15 minute walks, and work your way up to briskly walking or jogging for 30 minutes daily. Try adding strengthening exercises 2 or 3 days per week, and consider boosting your flexibility with yoga or Pilates classes. Whenever you work out, always listen to your body's limits, and ask your doctor for advice if you have a history of any medical issues.
Tailor your routine to your experience level. Start slowly if you aren't used to physical activity and want to develop an exercise routine. As you gain experience, try increasing your workouts' intensity levels gradually.[1]
For example, start off by walking for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. After 1 to 2 weeks, work your way up to 30 minutes. Try to pick up your pace, too. You might start by walking in 15 minutes, then work your way up to in 30 minutes.
When you do strengthening exercises, start with 2 sets of 8 repetitions (such as 8 push-ups). Then add 1 to 2 additional reps per week until you can do a set of 12 to 14.
Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes before working out. When you warm up, target the muscles you plan on exercising, but use less intense movements. For instance, walk for 5 to 10 minutes before jogging or doing a lower body workout.[2]
If you're swimming, go slowly at first, then pick up your pace. Before an upper body workout, walk or jog and do light jumping jacks to raise your heart rate and increase blood flow.
Try to get 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per day. As a rule of thumb, you should get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise daily. Examples include going for brisk walks and jogs, running, cycling, and swimming.[3]
When you're exercising at moderate intensity, your heart rate should increase and you should breathe harder. You should still be able to speak, but you should be winded enough that you can't sing.
Keep in mind you can break your workout times into chunks and spread them throughout the day. Being active for 5 or 10 minutes at a time is a good way to ease your way into exercise if you're not used to it.
Include strength training at least 2 days per week. Also known as resistance training, strength training involves using free weights, resistance bands, or your own body weight to strengthen your muscles. If you're just starting out, try doing upper and lower body workouts 1 day a week each. In time, gradually work your way up to including 3 to 4 strength training days in your weekly routine.[4]
A sample intermediate upper body workout could be 2 sets of 30-second planks and 2 sets of 12 reps each for crunches, push-ups, dumbbell biceps curls, and dumbbell shoulder presses.
To strengthen your legs, do 2 sets of 12 reps each for squats, glute bridges, calf raises, and lunges.
Generally, rest for 30 to 60 seconds between sets. If building muscle power is your goal and you're doing high-intensity weight lifting, resting for 3 minutes can result in greater increases in strength.[5]
You can do strength training at home or use resistance machines at a local gym.
Mix up your routine to keep things interesting. Varying your activities can help keep you from getting bored, which can motivate you to stay on track. Additionally, switching up your workouts will engage your entire body and help prevent injury.[6]
For instance, you could jog on Monday, do upper body strength training Tuesday, swim laps on Wednesday, do a lower body workout Thursday, take a yoga class on Friday, ride your bike Saturday, and go for a light walk on Sunday.
On strength training days, get your daily aerobic exercise by warming up and cooling down with brisk walks, doing jumping jacks, or jumping rope. Climbing stairs and going for a walk during your lunch break can help you squeeze in 5 or 10 more minutes of aerobic exercise throughout the day.
Avoid targeting the same muscle group 2 days in a row. Don't, for instance, do biceps curls and shoulder presses on back-to-back days. Muscles need time to recover, and overworking them can lead to injury.
Walk for 5 to 10 minutes and stretch to cool down after workouts. Cool downs, like warm-up exercises, are a gentler forms of exercise meant to ease your body from working hard to being at rest. Cool down by walking for 5 to 10 minutes and stretching the muscles your workout targeted.[7]
Stretch individual muscles for a total of 30 to 60 seconds. For example, you might do 3 to 4 quad stretches per leg and hold each stretch for 10 seconds.[8]
Avoid stretching before you exercise, which poses an injury risk. Stretching after exercise, when your muscles are warm, can help them recover and improve your flexibility.
Go for a brisk walk or jog every day. Walking and jogging are great ways to stay active, especially if you're just beginning to exercise. You could go for a 15-minute brisk walk during your lunch break, then walk or jog around your neighborhood for 15 minutes after dinner.[9]
If you're elderly or have a history of joint issues, jogging may be tough on your knees, hips, and ankles. Respect your body's limits and, if necessary, stick to walking.
Jump rope for 5 to 15 minutes. More than just a fun game for kids, jumping rope is an excellent cardio workout. Grab a rope, and try jumping for 5 minutes straight. If you're not used to exercising, it's okay if you can only jump for a minute or so.[10]
If you need to stop, take a break and catch your breath. Try jumping rope for gradually longer periods of time. You could aim to add 30 seconds or a minute to your time each week until you can jump for at least 5 minutes straight.
Do jumping jacks for 5 to 15 minutes. Start by standing with your legs together and arms at your side. Then jump straight up as you move your legs outward and raise your arms together above your head. Return to the starting position, then repeat.[11]
As with jumping rope, take a break if you feel too winded, and try to gradually increase the length of time you can do jumping jacks.
Go for bike rides. When you're just starting off, go for easy bike rides around your neighborhood, on a local bike trail, or at a park. At first, try cycling for around in 30 minutes, then gradually increase your speed and distance.[12]
As you get used to being active, try to work your way up to in 30 minutes. Eventually, aim to cover in 15 minutes.
Swim laps at your local pool or fitness center. Swimming is a great full body workout, and it can help add variety to your routine. Try swimming laps for 20 minutes, or for as long as you can without getting too winded. It's okay if you need to take a break, especially when you're just getting used to exercising.[13]
In addition to swimming laps, you could do water aerobics or just walk around in a pool. These are good options for people with joint problems or those who are significantly overweight.
Try running once you're used to being active. Go for runs around your neighborhood, or look for a local indoor or outdoor track. Try to run for 15 to 30 minutes straight, but don't push yourself too hard if you're just starting to get more active.[14]
Each week, try to add another minute to your running time. Eventually, see if you can run straight, track your time, and try to cut down your time each time you run.
Running might be tough on your legs if you're elderly or have a history of bone or joint issues. Remember to respect your body's limits.
Challenge yourself with interval training. Interval training involves alternating high-intensity and low-intensity exercises, and it's a great way to burn calories. Since it involves high-intensity activities, such as running or sprinting, it's best to include interval training in your routine if you're already used to regular exercise. For a good, basic interval session, try doing a sprint-walk routine.[15]
Warm up by walking briskly for 5 to 10 minutes, then jog for 5 to 10 minutes. After jogging, sprint for 30 to 60 seconds, then jog for 5 minutes. Alternate running for 30 to 60 seconds with 5 minutes of jogging at least 2 to 3 times, then cool down by walking for 5 to 10 minutes.
Do push-ups to strengthen your arms and chest. Lie face down with your palms flat on the floor by your shoulders. Then, keeping your head, neck, back, and legs aligned, exhale and lift your body by extending your arms. Your hands and toes should support your body weight.[16]
Straighten your arms, but don't lock your elbows. Hold yourself up for a second, then inhale as you slowly lower yourself back down so that your nose nearly touches the ground. Repeat the steps to complete 2 sets of 12 reps.
To mix up your routine, set your palms at a wider distance as you perform push-ups. You could also hold yours arms close to your body as you do push-ups to shift the work from your chest to your triceps.
Try to hold a plank for 30 to 45 seconds. Start by lying face-down on the floor, as if you were about to do a push-up. Raise your body and support your weight on your forearms and toes. Try to hold the pose for at least 30 seconds, lower yourself to the floor, rest for 30 to 60 seconds, then repeat.[17]
Keep your head, neck, and back in a straight line as you hold the pose. Avoid looking up; keep your head in a neutral position so you face the floor.
If 30 seconds isn't challenging, try holding the plank for 1 minute or more.
Remember to keep breathing normally as you hold the plank.
Work your abdominal muscles with crunches. Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your hands across your chest or behind your head, engage your ab muscles, and exhale as you slowly raise your upper torso off of the floor.[18]
Lift your torso until your shoulder blades are off of the floor, hold for 1 to 2 seconds, then inhale as you slowly lower yourself back to the ground. Repeat the steps to complete 2 sets of 12 reps.
Use slow, controlled motions to avoid injury and make your muscles work harder.
If you place your hands behind your head, do not use them to pull up your head and neck. To avoid injury, just rest your fingertips on the back of your head, or cross your hands over your chest.
Target your glutes and core muscles with bridges. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor, and your arms by your sides. Inhale, then exhale as you engage your core muscles and slowly raise your hips and lower back off of the floor. Lift yourself until your shoulders and knees form a straight line, and keep your arms flat on the floor to keep your balance.[19]
Hold the lifted position for 1 to 2 seconds, then inhale as you slowly lower yourself back into starting position. Repeat the steps, and complete 2 sets of 12 bridges.
To increase difficulty, try holding yourself in the raised position, then raise and extend 1 leg straight. Lower the leg back to the floor, repeat on the other side, then lower yourself to the floor.
Strengthen your legs by doing squats. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward, back straight, and your arms by your sides or crossed over your chest. Keeping your torso aligned and core muscles engaged, slowly bend your knees and lower your hips as if you were going to sit in a chair.[20]
Stick your rear end out as you lower your hips so your weight is back on your heels. Keep your knees and toes aligned, and avoid bending your knees past your toes.
Continue lowering yourself until your thighs are roughly parallel with the floor, then push your feet into the floor through your heels to raise yourself back to the starting position.
Inhale as you lower yourself, and exhale as you exert your legs and lift yourself. Repeat the steps to complete 2 sets of 12 squats.
Try doing burpees for a full body workout. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, then jump and drop to a crouched position. Place your palms flat on the floor and thrust your legs back to enter the push-up position, and do one push-up.[21]
After the push-up, pull your legs back to the crouched position, and then jump straight up with your hands raised to return to the standing position. Repeat to complete 2 sets of 12 burpees.
Invest in free weights or a gym membership. While you can do plenty of strengthening exercises without weights, dumbbells, barbells, and resistance machines can add intensity to your workouts. To avoid injury, start with lighter weights, and avoid trying to push your body beyond its limits.[22]
Choose weights that challenge you, but still allow you to maintain proper form. Watch yourself in the mirror, and make sure your reps are smooth, steady, and controlled. If you look out of balance or struggle to make it through a set, choose lighter weights.[23]
Try doing 2 sets of 12 biceps curls. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and hold a dumbbell weight in each hand by your sides. Bend your elbows, keeping them close to your side, to lift the dumbbells to your shoulders. Inhale as you lower back to the starting position, and exhale when you exert your biceps.
Do shoulder presses by raising the dumbbells by your shoulders with your elbows bent. Exhale as you extend your arms straight above your head, bring the dumbbells back to your shoulders, and repeat to complete 2 sets of 12.
Consult a trainer or experienced friend to ensure you use proper form. If you use resistance machines at the gym, have a trainer instruct you on proper use.
Stretch after you've warmed up your muscles. You should only stretch muscles that have been active and received increased blood flow. Stretching cold, inactive muscles poses an injury risk. Whenever you stretch, hold the pose steadily instead of bouncing in and out of it. Inhale as you move into a stretch, and exhale as you hold the pose.[24]
To stretch your hamstrings, sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Reach toward your toes as far as you can until you feel a stretch in the backs of your legs, then hold the stretch for 15 to 20 seconds.
To stretch your quads, stand and use a chair or wall for support. Bring your right foot toward your rear end, grab your toes with your right hand, and gently pull until you feel a stretch in the front of your thigh. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds, then repeat on your left leg.
For a simple shoulder stretch, gently pull your right elbow across the front of your body towards the opposite shoulder until you feel a stretch in your right shoulder and back. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds, then repeat on your other arm.
Stretch your calves by standing next to a wall, then place your palms flat against it at shoulder height. Keeping your arms straight and feet on the floor, extend your right leg back, and bend your left knee slightly. Press into the wall until you feel a stretch in your right calf, hold the pose for 15 to 20 seconds, then repeat on the other side.
Start doing yoga. In addition to improving balance and flexibility, yoga can boost concentration and help you keep stress levels in check. You could take classes at a local gym, community center, or yoga studio, or practice at home using online or DVD guides.[25]
From yoga to tai chi, taking a group class is a great way to stick with an exercise routine. Adding a social component can make staying active more fun, and you might feel a greater need to hold yourself accountable.
Try taking up Pilates. Pilates is a series of movements inspired by yoga and dance that combines aerobic, balance, and flexibility training. Like yoga, you could find a local Pilates group to practice with or take a class at a local gym or studio.[26]
While group classes might liven up your routine, you can also look for Pilates DVDs or online video guides.
Stay active by dancing. From ballet to flamenco, dancing can be a rigorous form of exercise. It can improve your flexibility, offer aerobic or endurance training, and boost your coordination. Find a local group to practice with or take a class from a local gym or community center.[27]
Learning how to line dance or attending a dance-exercise class might be fun, but you could also put on your favorite tunes and dance around your house.
Add tai chi to your exercise routine. Tai chi is a Chinese martial art that involves sequences of slow movements. It can help improve your balance, flexibility, and concentration, and it's a good way to manage stress. Since it's a low impact form of exercise, it's a good option if you're elderly, have a history of medical issues, or have recently suffered an injury.[28]
Look for tai chi classes at a local gym or studio, or find online video guides.
Find small chunks of time to get active throughout the day. You don't have to dedicate hours of your day to exercising. Find ways to fit exercise into small blocks of time when you'd otherwise be sedentary.[29]
For instance, do squats while you wait for water to boil or for your coffee to be ready.
Squeeze in a minute for planks when you first wake up in the morning.
Take 5-minute breaks every hour at work to walk around the office and stretch.
Spend less time sitting. Spending most of your day sitting in a desk chair is tough on your body. Try using a standing desk, or even a standing desk in combination with a treadmill. If that's not for you, just do your best to take regular breaks to get up and walk around.[30]
You could also try sitting on an exercise ball instead of a desk chair. Since you'll need to engage your core muscles to keep yourself steady on the ball, it's a bit like a workout even though you're seated.
Take the stairs instead of using elevators. When getting to your apartment or office, skip the elevator and take the stairs instead. If you can't make it up a 5-flight walk-up, just do 1 or 2 sets of stairs, and try adding a floor each week.[31]
Climbing stairs can burn up to twice as many calories as walking for the same amount of time.
Walk and ride your bike instead of driving. Instead of driving to nearby locations, head out on foot or ride your bike whenever possible. For instance, turn grocery shopping into a workout by walking to the store a few times a week.[32]
If work is too far away to cycle, you could take a bus and get off a few stops early to walk the rest of the way.
Some buses have bike racks or allow folding bikes on board, so you could also split your commute between cycling and riding the bus.
When you do drive, try parking a few blocks away from your destination, or at the far end of a shopping center's parking lot.
Check with your doctor before starting an exercise routine. It's especially important to consult a doctor if you have a history of heart, bone, muscle, joint, or other medical conditions. Ask your doctor for advice on how to safely start exercising and to recommend exercises that benefit your specific condition.[33]
If you experience pain, dizziness, inability to catch your breath, or any other concerning symptoms during exercise, you should talk to a doctor.
Drink lots of water before, during, and after exercising. Try to drink about of water before you exercise, and every 15 to 20 minutes during your workout. Your body will need extra water to help your muscles work and to replace the fluids lost as you sweat.[34]
Sports drinks can also help you replace salts and minerals lost in sweat. However, if you're trying to lose weight, limit your consumption of sports drinks, as they contain lots of sugar and can add extra calories to your diet.
It's also wise to eat a healthy source of protein or complex carbs after exercising. Examples include fruit, nuts, a peanut butter sandwich, lean meat, cheese, whole grain crackers, or a protein bar.
Choose clothes that suit your activity. In general, wear clothes that won't restrict your movement or blood flow. For some forms of exercise, like biking, you might want to wear form-fitting clothes, but they still shouldn't be too tight. Looser workout clothes are better for strength training, brisk walking, and sports such as basketball or soccer.[35]
Make sure your clothes suit the weather. Wear short sleeves and light, breathable fabrics in hot temperatures, and wear layers if it's cold.
Stop exercising if you experience pain. "No pain, no gain" is not the advice to follow. If you feel any soreness or sharp pain, stop the activity. Do your best to rest the affected area until the pain starts to subside.[36]
If you believe you've injured yourself, you might be able to treat it at home. Rest, apply ice for 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours, compress the injured area with athletic tape, and try to keep it raised around heart level. To manage pain, take over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen.[37]
Seek medical attention if you hear a pop, experience severe pain, have uncontrolled bleeding, can't move or bear weight on a joint, or if mild to moderate symptoms don't improve within 1 to 2 weeks.
Wear athletic shoes that offer support and cushioning. When you're out shoe shopping, look for athletic shoes with sturdy rubber soles. Good shoes shouldn't bend in half, so hold a shoe by the toe and heel, and gently try to see if the soles resist pressure.[38]
Shoes should fit comfortably; they shouldn't feel tight, and your toes should reach the shoes' tips without being constricted. Always try on both shoes of a pair when checking their fit.
Go with shoes that match the activity you're doing, such as running shoes or basketball shoes. Different activities put stress on your feet in different ways. For instance, running shoes provide the flexibility required for a proper running step, but lack the ankle support needed for tennis or basketball.[39]
Listening to music while you work out can be a great way to stay entertained and motivated.
Consistency is the most important part of an exercise routine. It'll take more than a few days to see results. Make exercise a normal habit, and focus on maintaining your healthy routine.
It's impossible to use targeted exercises to lose fat in a particular part of your body. For instance, doing ab and quad exercises doesn't target fat around your belly or thighs. You'll need to burn more calories than you consume in order to reduce overall body fat percentage.
Exercise is meant to make you healthier, not make you look like someone out of a magazine. Concentrate on developing healthy habits, and pat yourself on the back for putting forth the effort.
If you're a preteen or teen, your body is still developing, and some exercises could be bad for your bones and joints. If you're interested in strength training exercises, ask your doctor for tips on staying safe.
Avoid exercising the same muscle group 2 days in a row and working out when you're experiencing muscle or joint pain.
Ask your doctor for advice about exercising if you're not used to physical activity or have a history of any medical conditions. Consult a doctor or physical therapist if you've recently suffered an injury before resuming exercise.
A fireplace can be a cozy addition to any home, but one of the inevitable byproducts is soot on the surrounding bricks. Soot can leave lasting stains on the material it comes in contact with, so it's important to clean this buildup at least once a year. To clean soot from your brick, stick with using baking soda or white vinegar for a natural solution, or use a chemical cleaner like TSP to make your bricks clean again.
Let your fireplace cool for at least 12 hours before you start. Hot bricks should not be cleaned. After your fire, let everything cool down overnight or for at least 12 hours before you start any cleaning methods. This will protect your hands and make sure no chemicals get warmed up as you use them.[1]
If you use your fireplace for heat, consider cleaning it during the summer months when you won't need to use it as much.
Remove the ashes and loose soot. Use a brush and dustpan to clean your fireplace out before you start scrubbing it. Throw away any ashes or large pieces of charred wood that may be in the fireplace. This will make your cleaning process much easier.[2]
You can set aside wood that has not been burned to use later.
Lay a drop cloth or towels down to protect your floors. As you clean, you may drip water or chemicals on the floor around your fireplace. Lay down a protective covering on your floors surrounding your fireplace to make sure you don't damage your carpet or hardwood.[3]
Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands. As you scrub your fireplace, you may end up getting chemicals on your hands. Put on rubber kitchen gloves to protect your skin and avoid irritation. If you are using TSP cleaner, put on safety goggles as well.[4]
Make a paste of a 1:1 ratio of water and baking soda. Combine 4 tbsp (56 g) of baking soda with of warm water. Stir the ingredients together until they form a thick paste. If your mixture is too runny, add more baking soda.[5]
Rub the mixture into the bricks with your hands. Scoop large amounts of your baking soda paste and spread it onto your fireplace. Work from the top down to create a thin layer all over the brick face. Spread extra paste on the inside of the fireplace, since that is where the soot will be the thickest. Pay special attention to the crevices and grooves in between bricks. Focus on any areas of the fireplace are particularly dirty.[6]
Put on rubber kitchen gloves to protect your hands, or use a clean rag to spread the paste instead.
Let the paste sit for 10 minutes. The baking soda will work to break down grease and grime on your bricks. Allow the paste to sit for about 10 minutes to loosen up the soot. Do not let the paste dry or harden all the way, or it could damage your bricks.[7]
If your paste does get too dry, spray it with water to loosen it up again.
Scrub the mixture away with an abrasive scrub brush. Use a scrub brush with hard bristles to scrub away the mixture. Dip your brush in water occasionally to wash away the baking soda residue. The mildly abrasive baking soda will work with your brush to scrub away tough soot.[8]
Do not brush so hard that you damage the bricks themselves.
Wipe down your bricks with warm water and remove the drop cloths. Use a soft sponge dipped in warm water to completely remove any baking soda left on your bricks. Let the fireplace dry completely before you use it again. Remove any drop cloths or towels you put down to catch spills.[9]
Combine a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Combine of white vinegar with of warm water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to make sure they are mixed well. Use a clean spray bottle that has not ever had any harsh chemicals in it.[10]
You can buy empty spray bottles at most home goods and hardware stores.
Spray the inside and outside of the fireplace with the vinegar solution. Working from the top down, spray your vinegar solution all over the bricks. Pay special attention to areas that have a lot of soot, which could be right around the opening of the fireplace. Make sure you have a drop cloth down to catch any drips.[11]
If you have leftover vinegar solution, you can use it as a natural cleaner for bathrooms and countertops.
Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes. Vinegar is mildly acidic, so it will work to break down the soot and grime stuck onto your bricks. Let the vinegar and water sit on your bricks, but do not let it dry. Don't let it sit for longer than 10 minutes, or the acidity could start to damage your bricks.[12]
Scrub the bricks from the top down with a scrub brush. Dip your scrub brush in warm water and scrub your bricks. Pay special attention to the grooves in between bricks and any areas that have a lot of soot. Scrub at the bricks until the vinegar smell is no longer there.[13]
You can sprinkle baking soda over your bricks to remove the vinegar faster. However, this will cause a foaming reaction on your bricks and could create a mess.
Clean your bricks with warm water and remove the drop cloths. Use a soft sponge to quickly spread warm water over all your bricks. Take away any drop cloths or towels you used on the floor around your fireplace. Let your fireplace dry completely before you burn anything in it again.[14]
Put on gloves to protect your hands. TSP, or trisodium phosphate, can damage your skin if you get it on you directly. Put on rubber kitchen gloves to protect your hands. Avoid touching TSP with your bare hands as much as you can.[15]
You can find rubber gloves at most home goods stores.
Mix trisodium phosphate and warm water in a bucket. Combine 8 tbsp (112 g) of TSP and of warm water. Use a plastic bucket that will not come into contact with food later. Stir the mixture until it forms a thin, watery paste.[16]
You can buy TSP at most hardware stores.
Use a hard-bristled brush to scrub the mixture into the bricks. Scrub the paste into your bricks on the outside and inside of your fireplace using your brush. Work from the top down, and apply extra paste to areas with more soot. Scrub at the areas to remove the soot. Be careful not to damage the bricks themselves as you scrub, especially if your fireplace is old.[17]
Rinse the bricks with warm water using a sponge. Use a soft sponge to apply warm water all over your bricks. Gently sponge away any TSP residue that is left on your bricks. Rinse your bucket and brushes thoroughly once you are done using them.[18]
If there is still soot left on your bricks, apply more TSP paste and scrub them again.
Never use abrasive chemicals when you clean soot from brick. Many will leave a flammable film which could be dangerous the next time you use your fireplace.
Only clean the fireplace when you are certain all ashes are entirely cold. Heat can remain trapped in the ashes for several days after a fire and you could inadvertently burn yourself.
Craigslist scams are unfortunately pretty common, so it's important to be extra vigilant if you want to buy a car from a seller on Craigslist. You can protect yourself from scams by evaluating the ad carefully before you look any further. If the ad seems legit, evaluate the seller next. If they seem trustworthy, assess the car to see if you want to buy it. Never put down any amount of money on a car before you have seen it as this is a common way that people get scammed on Craigslist.
Watch out for ads with a very low or unusual price. If the price is significantly lower than you'd expect it to be, this is a red flag. Check the Kelly Blue Book price to get a ballpark range for what the price ought to be. If it's considerably lower, such as 25% less or more, then the ad is likely a scam. A very specific price can also be a red flag, such as $2,347 or something along these lines.[1]
If the seller suggests shipping the car to you for an additional charge or including shipping in the sale price, this is likely a scam.[2]
Check the listing for severe grammar issues. If the car's description is poorly written and difficult to understand, it might have been written by a scammer. Pass on any cars with descriptions that are chock full of grammatical, spelling, or other errors.[3]
For example, steer clear of an ad that reads something like, "new sidan for weel driv plus exxtras."
Perform a reverse image search of the car photo. Copy the image's url and paste it into Google's image search, or download and save the image and then drag and drop it into the search bar after clicking on the camera button next to the search bar. Then, review the results to determine if the same photo is posted elsewhere. If you find multiple listings that use the same image, the ad is likely a scam.[4]
By doing a reverse image search, you may even find that the image is a stock photo and not an image of a real car for sale.
Copy and paste the car description into Google to spot duplicates. Place the description in quotation marks to find duplicate listings. Some scammers will post multiple ads using the exact same language, so this is an easy way to weed out fake ads.[5]
Be wary if the language is very similar to other ads as well. Look at other aspects of the ad to check for red flags.
Compare the price of the car in the ad with the website listing. If the seller also has a website or Facebook page, make sure that the prices listed for the car are the same on both sites. If the price listed on one of the outlets is lower, negotiate from this price instead of from the higher price.[6]
For example, if the car is listed for $2,500 on the seller's Facebook page and $3,000 on the Craigslist post, negotiate down from $2,500 rather than from $3,000.
Email the seller if there's no location or phone number listed in the ad. The ad should clearly indicate where the car is located and provide a contact phone number for the seller. If there's no location or phone number listed, this may be a red flag. However, you can email the seller to see if they will provide a location and phone number. If they refuse to tell you where the car is located of give you a phone number, this is likely a scam.[7]
Another red flag is a location that doesn't make sense, such as "in the mountains of Orlando."
Be especially wary of sellers who tell a sad story. Sob stories are often used by scammers to rush a sale, so be wary if the seller tells you one or mentions other circumstances unrelated to the car. For example, if the seller tells you a story about being laid off and needing money quickly to pay their bills, this is a red flag. Other things to watch out for include:[8]
Saying they're about to be deployed and need to sell the car in a hurry.
Claiming they have other buyers interested, so they need a decision right away.
Calling you repeatedly to ask if you've made a decision.
Avoid sellers who claim to be handling the sale for someone else. If the seller says they're handling the sale of the car for a neighbor, elderly parent, or someone else, be cautious. This is often a red flag and it may indicate that the car was stolen. Always ask to see the title and seller's ID to ensure that the car you're looking at belongs to the person who is selling it.[9]
A seller may also claim to have less knowledge about the vehicle under the veil of this story, which could result in not getting clear answers to your questions about the car.
Research any website that the seller directs you to for payment. The safest option is to pay the seller with cash, so be cautious if they direct you to a website to make your payment. Sellers will often provide an escrow website address to increase the buyer's sense of security, but this does not mean they are not scamming you. Evaluate the site thoroughly to ensure that it is a legitimate website.[10]
Avoid sellers that claim to be associated with eBay or eBay Motors as well. This is a common scam and they may even send you emails and links to websites that look like they're coming from eBay.[11]
Avoid curbstone dealers who suggest meeting at their houses. A curbstone dealer is someone who sells a car in front of their house. The person might be a dealer with an actual car lot, but they may move a car to their house and park it out front to increase the perceived value of the car. People tend to be less critical of cars that appear to be being sold by the previous owner, especially if the person lives in a nice neighborhood.[12]
If you do decide to look at a car at someone's house, bring a friend or family member along with you. If you don't know much about cars, bring someone along who knows about cars.
Call the seller to evaluate their knowledge and professionalism. Talking on the phone with a seller is a good way to feel out their character and ask more questions about the car. Ask about the condition of the car, any issues it has, and request a test drive if you're interested.[13]
As an added bonus, some sellers will also be willing to reduce the price further if they perceive you as a serious buyer.
Meet the seller in a public place to conduct the final sale transaction. If you decide to buy a car from a Craigslist seller, it's best to make your payment with cash and in person. Request to meet with the person in a public place or at the bank to ensure that you will have witnesses if the person attempts to rob you.[14]
Never pay the person using a wire transfer or using Western Union as this is a common scam tactic.
Refuse to pay any amount of money for a car you've never seen. If you haven't seen the car, it may not exist. Stick to cars that are close enough to your location that you can go look at them. Avoid cars that are located in another state or country, or even vehicles that are a few hours away. Try to purchase only from local dealers so that you can bring the car in to them if there's a problem.[15]
Be especially wary of sellers who say they will ship the vehicle to you.[16]
Compare the number on the odometer to other age-related features. The average person puts per year on a vehicle, so a car that is 3 years old would likely have around on it. If the car has considerably fewer miles, then the seller may have tampered with the odometer. Note the appearance of the interior and the condition of the tires. If the interior or tires are well-worn, then the car's odometer may be inaccurate.[17]
Keep in mind that elderly people and teenagers tend to drive around per year, so this could also account for lower mileage. Ask questions about the previous owner if the mileage seems low.
Search for the car's history using the vehicle identification number. Scammers may provide you with a forged report that leaves important details out of the car's history. Do not accept a report that the seller provides. Instead, look up the car's history using the vehicle identification number (VIN). You can search the VIN on a website like Carfax and get a full report.[18]
Be wary of any cars that were involved in accidents or that had ongoing issues.
Request to take the car on a longer test drive if the seller rushes it. Scammers often try to avoid letting potential buyers take the car for a full test drive since this may reveal issues with the car. If the seller tries to rush the test drive, tell them you would like to drive it a little longer and in different conditions to see how well it works. If they say no or try to convince you that a longer test drive is not necessary, don't buy the car.[19]
During the test drive, drive the car at slow and fast speeds, pay attention to how well it brakes and turns, and note any unusual sounds.
Ask to get the car assessed by your mechanic before you buy it. Unless you are car savvy yourself, it can be difficult to spot issues with a car. Bring along a friend who knows a lot about cars or ask the seller to meet you at your mechanic's garage to check the car for any serious issues.[20]
For example, a mechanic will be better equipped to check the engine for major issues and tell if the seller may have tampered with the car in any way.
