* Decision to replace Premier Li Keqiang at annual meeting reflects Beijing's increased focus on Europe amid rising tensions with US, sources say * Xi expected to deliver a keynote speech and meet heads of state from across Central and Eastern Europe at April event
Chinese President Xi Jinping will replace Premier Li Keqiang as host of this year's Cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries meeting, sources said, in a sign of the greater significance Beijing now gives to its links with Europe amid a growing rivalry with the United States.
Invitations for the event – launched by Beijing in 2012 and better known as the "17+1" for the 17 European nations that take part – were sent to European leaders in Xi's name, according to diplomats who have seen them.
One source, who declined to be named, said Xi was expected to deliver a keynote speech at the summit, which is set to take place in April in the Chinese capital, and meet the visiting dignitaries.
WNU Editor: Many of the countries that will attend this Chinese sponsored summit have huge trade deficits with China. I am not sure on what they are expecting from Beijing, because China's policy is to increase its trade with these countries even more.
Iraq's caretaker Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is convening an emergency session of parliament Sunday to discuss the US assassination of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the Tehran-backed deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units.
The emergency session could lead to a longtime goal of Iran's proxies in Iraq: the expulsion of US forces from Iraq, potentially jeopardizing the campaign against the remnants of the Islamic State.
WASHINGTON — Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, vowed to exact "severe revenge" for the Thursday night U.S. airstrike that killed the country's most famous general, but the Iranian regime will have to walk a fine line to respond strongly without provoking a war with the United States, former intelligence officials familiar with the region said Friday.
Qassem Soleimani headed the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' Quds Force, which combines intelligence gathering, covert action and special operations. He died when a U.S. missile struck his vehicle near Baghdad International Airport. Also killed in the airstrike, which hit two vehicles, was Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the leader of the Iraqi Shiite militia group Kataib Hezbollah, along with several other Quds Force and militia members.

A convoy including Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces was hit by an airstrike early Saturday in north Baghdad, killing and wounding several, according to the PMF.
"The initial report indicates that the strike targeted a convoy belonging to the medical units for the Popular Mobilization Forces, near Taji Stadium in Baghdad," the PMF said in a statement.
Iraqi state news also reported a strike against the paramilitary forces.
The action comes a day after an airstrike ordered by US President Donald Trump killed a top Iranian commander, Qasem Soleimani, at a Baghdad airport.
It is not yet known who carried out the reported airstrike on Saturday.
Shortly after the news broke that a US airstrike in Baghdad ordered by President Donald Trump had killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's Quds Force, Ari Fleischer went on Fox News and proclaimed, "I think it is entirely possible that this is going to be a catalyst inside Iran where the people celebrate this killing of Soleimani."
WNU Editor: US hawks are not in the driver's seat in this crisis, even though they are applauding the demise of Soleimani while issuing calls to put more pressure on Iran. The ball has always been in Iran's court, and it is still there. What Iran will do in the coming days/weeks/months will determine how much this crisis will escalate. So here is my prediction. For now they will do nothing. Maybe a terror or military strike here or there, some actions in the Straits of Hormuz, but a major escalation is not going to happen. In fact, I believe they are in shocked with what has happened. After all, if someone like Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani can be killed, then no one is really safe. With hindsight I have to say that Tehran made a major strategic and tactical mistake when they green-lighted another rocket attack on a US base that killed a US contractor and wounded scores of American soldiers last week. They underestimated the U.S. response, and for that they lost a major militia HQ, equipment, and 25 fighters. They also did not take seriously President Trump's threat that the US would respond even more forcefully if an attack should be repeated in the future. To put it bluntly, President Trump drew a red line. But instead of heeding it an attack was organized and launched against the US embassy in Baghdad. The fact that Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani showed up a day later tells me that he wanted to see for himself what had happened, and to make plans on what to do next. I have mentioned more than once on this blog that when Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani shows up, mayhem and destruction soon follow. I am sure his arrival in Baghdad on Thursday telegraphed to Washington that something big was going to happen, and the final decision to take him out was then made when the opportunity arrived. So what will happen next? Tomorrow the Iraqi parliament is going to meet, and they are going to pass a motion that all US forces should leave Iraq. I personally hope that President Trump will take that as an opportunity to leave Iraq, and do so promptly. The hawks in Washington are going to scream at President Trump that should do everything in his power to stay, but enough is enough. Iraq was a mess before, it is a mess today, and it will be a mess tomorrow. This is not our fight.
Aerospace and defense firms are among the few groups of stocks soaring in Friday trading, with new fears of conflict between the US and Iran boosting war-driven industries.
A US airstrike approved by President Trump killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani on Thursday, ratcheting up tensions between the two nations and tanking prices for many risk assets.

* On Thursday, the Pentagon confirmed that US forces killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike near Baghdad's airport at the direction of President Donald Trump. * As the leader of the elite and secretive Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Soleimani abetted terrorism and violence throughout the region, including against US troops. * Neither George W. On Thursday evening, the Pentagon confirmed that at the direction of President Donald Trump, US forces killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike near Baghdad's airport, the most drastic step toward conflict with Iran in the 21st century.
Soleimani was for decades one of the most important and highly regarded military figures in Iran, playing a pivotal role in shaping Iranian foreign policy and the politics of the Middle East today.
The killing of the high-level commander, first reported by Iraqi state TV and later confirmed in a Pentagon statement, is the US's most significant escalation of tensions against Iran yet and is likely to further inflame conflict in the region and provoke severe retaliation.

The Iraqi militia leader was killed in the same US air strike as Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani - but who was he?
The news of a US air strike targeting top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad's international airport on Friday has sent shockwaves across the region - eclipsing the death of another significant player who was among the 10 people killed in the attack.
Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi Iraqi militia, may have been a far less prominent figure than Soleimani, head of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force overseas wing; but Muhandis himself has a long history of involvement in military and paramilitary groups and his death highlights Iran's influence in Iraqi armed groups.
So who was the man widely recognised as the leading figure of Hashd al-Shaabi, the group which recently came to the fore for its storming of the US embassy on 31 December?
* Qassem Soleimani killed in US drone strike on Baghdad airport late Thursday * Quds general was seen as second-most powerful man in Iran and future leader * He fought against Iraq during invasion of Iran in 1980, became commander of a division before he was 30, and promoted to Quds commander in 2002 * Soleimani helped Shia militias kill hundreds of US troops with IEDs, backed Assad as he slaughtered civilians, and oversaw killing of protesters in Iraq
Quds commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed Friday in a US strike, was one of Iran's most prominent figures who orchestrated thousands of killings on behalf of Tehran in attacks on the West and allies in the region.
As the head of the Quds - or Jersualem - Force of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Soleimani was officially charged with protecting the Islamic revolution, and in practice was used to enforce the regime's will across the Middle East.
Commonly known as the second most powerful man in Iran, wielding more influence than the president, he was seen by many as a future leader.
* US airstrike killed General Qassem Soleimani, the powerful head of Iran's elite Quds Force, in Baghdad * The attack unfolded early on Friday local time in a precision strike on two cars that were carrying Soleimani * Soleimani had just arrived in Baghdad on a flight from Syria and was leaving the airport when he was hit * Attack also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, leader of Iranian militias in Iraq which led attacks on US embassy
Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran's Quds force, was among five people killed when an American Reaper drone fired missiles at two cars carrying him and other senior officials out of Baghdad airport early Friday morning.
The senior general, commonly known as the second-most powerful man in Iran and tipped as a future president, was so badly maimed in the strike that he had to be identified by a large ring he wore on his finger.
Soleimani had arrived at the airport on a plane from either Syria or Lebanon around 12.30am when he was met on the tarmac by Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the pro-Iran Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq.
Muhandis pulled up to the aircraft steps in two cars before Soleimani and Mohammed Ridha Jabri, public relations chief for the PMF who had been traveling with him, climbed inside and were driven away.
WNU Editor: This was an airstrike that deliberated obliterated the passengers in these cars. FRom what I have read, there is nothing left of Qassem Soleimani to bury.
* Donald Trump issued his first words on the killing of Qassem Soleimani * He claimed Iranian general was plotting to kill Americans * 'He should have been taken out many years ago!,' the president tweeted Friday morning * Qassem Soleimani, Iran's highest ranking general, was killed early Friday at Baghdad International Airport * US drone missiles obliterated vehicles carrying Soleimani and his entourage of Iraqi Shiite militiamen * Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said 'Jihad of Resistance will continue with more motivation' * President Hassan Rouhani vowed that Soleimani would be avenged by Iran and the 'free nations of the region' * Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CNN Friday morning there was a threat of 'imminent' attack in the region * The Pentagon says the strike was necessary to save American lives and deterring future attacks * Militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who helped besiege the US embassy Tuesday, was among the dead * Thousands of mourners flooded the streets of Soleimani's hometown in Kerman, while tens of thousands poured onto the streets of Tehran, chanting 'Death to America' and torching the Stars and Stripes
Donald Trump issued his first words on the killing of Qassem Soleimani, claiming the Iranian general killed thousands of Americans and should have been 'taken out many years ago.'
'General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more...but got caught! He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself,' the president tweeted Friday morning.
'While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!,' he added.

IRAN could be considering several drastic measures to retaliate against the US after Donald Trump gave US military forces the order to kill General Qasem Soleimani on Thursday.
(BOSTON) — Iran’s retaliation for the United States’ targeted killing of its top general is likely to include cyberattacks, security experts warned Friday. Iran’s state-backed hackers are already among the world’s most aggressive and could inject malware that triggers major disruptions to the U.S. public and private sector.
Potential targets include manufacturing facilities, oil and gas plants and transit systems. A top U.S. cybersecurity official is warning businesses and government agencies to be extra vigilant.
Iranian state-backed hackers carried out a series of disruptive denial-of-service attacks that knocked the websites of major U.S. banks and the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ offline in 2012-13, a response to U.S. sanctions. Two years later, they wiped servers at the Sands Casino in Las Vegas, crippling hotel and gambling operations.
The destructive attacks on U.S. targets ebbed when Tehran reached a nuclear deal with the Obama administration in 2015. The killing early Friday in Iraq of Quds Force commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani — long after Trump scrapped the nuclear deal — completely alters the equation.
“Our concern is essentially that things are going to go back to the way they were before the agreement,” said John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis at the cybersecurity firm FireEye. “There are opportunities for them to cause real disruption and destruction.”
Iran has been doing a lot of probing of critical U.S. industrial systems in recent years — trying to gain access — but has limited its destructive attacks to targets in the Middle East such as the Saudi oil company, experts say.
It’s not known whether Iranian cyber-agents have planted destructive payloads in U.S. infrastructure that could now be triggered.
“It’s certainly possible,” said Hultquist. “But we haven’t actually seen it.”
Robert M. Lee, chief executive of Dragos Inc., which specializes in industrial control system security, said Iranian hackers have been very aggressive in trying to gain access to utilities, factories and oil and gas facilities. That doesn’t mean they’ve succeeded, however. In one case in 2013 where they did break into the control system of a U.S. dam — garnering significant media attention — Lee said they probably didn’t know the compromised target was a small flood control structure 20 miles north of New York City.
Iran has been increasing its cyber capabilities but is not in the same league as China or Russia — which has proven most adept at sabotaging critical infrastructure, witnessed in attacks on Ukraine’s power grid and elections, experts agree.
And while the U.S. power grid is among the most secure and resilient in the world, plenty of private companies and local governments haven’t made adequate investments in cybersecurity and are highly vulnerable, experts say.
“My worst-case scenario is a municipality or a cooperative-type attack where power is lost to a city or a couple of neighborhoods,” Lee said.
Consider the havoc an epidemic of ransomware attacks has caused U.S. local governments, crippling services as vital as tax collection. While there’s no evidence of coordinated Iranian involvement, imagine if the aggressor — instead of scrambling data and demanding ransoms — simply wiped hard drives clean, said Hultquist.
The only known cybersecurity survey of U.S. local governments, county and municipal, found that the networks of 28 percent were being attacked at least hourly — and that nearly the same percentage said they didn’t even know how frequently they were being attacked. Although the study was done in 2016, the authors at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County don’t believe the situation has improved since.
The top cybersecurity official at the Department of Homeland Security, Christopher Krebs, urged companies and government agencies to refresh their knowledge of Iranian state-backed hackers’ past exploits and methods after Soleimani’s death was announced. “Pay close attention to your critical systems,” he tweeted.
In June, Krebs warned of a rise in malicious Iranian cyberactivity, particularly attacks using common methods like spearphishing that could erase entire networks: “What might start as an account compromise, where you think you might just lose data, can quickly become a situation where you’ve lost your whole network.”
When then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper blamed Iran for the Sands Casino attack, it was one of the first cases of American intelligence agencies identifying a specific country as hacking for political reasons: The casino’s owner, Sheldon Adelson, is a big Israel backer. Clapper also noted the value of hacking for collecting intelligence. North Korea’s hack of Sony Pictures in retaliation for a movie that mocked its leader followed.
The vast majority of the nearly 100 Iranian targets leaked online last year by a person or group known as Lab Dookhtegan — a defector, perhaps — were in the Middle East, said Charity Wright, a former National Security Agency analyst at the threat intelligence firm InSights. She said it’s highly likely Iran will focus its retaliation on U.S. targets in the region as well as in Israel and the U.S.

With just weeks before voting begins in Iowa, the killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump has posed a new challenge to his Democratic opponents: how should the Democratic candidates react to the assassination of a terrorist whose death could draw the U.S. into another costly confrontation in the Middle East? In a race that has rarely zeroed in on foreign policy, the question has the potential to reveal fissures between Democratic rivals and possibly upend the wide-open 2020 nominating contest.
On the campaign trail, the Democratic candidates acknowledged Soleimani was responsible for bloodshed across the Middle East, including the deaths of Americans, while highlighting the potential consequences of Iranian retaliation and giving the contenders an opportunity to highlight what several said was a rushed move on the President’s part.
“[Soleimani] supported terror and sowed chaos. None of that negates the fact that this is a hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region,” former Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement after the strike. “The Administration’s statement says that its goal is to deter future attacks by Iran, but this action almost certainly will have the opposite effect.”
Trump, Biden continued, “just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox.”
Biden’s statement was similar to those of some top Democratic rivals. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar warned that the attack raised “serious questions and concerns about escalating conflicts,” while former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg said it raised questions about whether the country is “prepared for the consequences.” Klobuchar and Buttigieg also condemned the Trump Administration’s failure to consult leading lawmakers in Congress prior to the airstrike. (Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said the group of lawmakers typically briefed on intelligence matters by the White House, known as the Gang of Eight, had not been consulted beforehand.)
The top two progressive candidates in the race raised similar alarm bells about the prospect of war with Iran, but couched their criticism in stronger language. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren initially tweeted a statement calling the move “reckless,” but referring to Soleimani as a “murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands.”
“Our priority must be to avoid another costly war with Iran,” she wrote.
On Friday, Warren sharpened her language. “Donald Trump ripped up an Iran nuclear deal that was working. He’s repeatedly escalated tensions,” she wrote on Twitter. “Now he’s assassinated a senior foreign military official. He’s been marching toward war with Iran since his first days in office—but the American people won’t stand for it.”
Warren’s rhetoric matched that of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who argued that the strike against Soleimani is analogous to the United States’ invasion of Iraq in 2002. “We face a similar crossroads fraught with danger,” he said at a town hall in Anamosa, Iowa on Friday. “Once again, we must worry about unintended consequences and the impact of unilateral decision making.” The populist Senator also noted that, should the U.S. officially enter into a war with Iran, it would be the working class who would face the most severe repercussions.
“It is rarely the children of the billionaire class who face the agony of reckless foreign policy,” he said. “It is the children of working families.”
Sanders never mentioned Biden by name when discussing the strike on Soleimani at his town hall Friday. But his invocation of the Iraq War was telling. He and Biden are the only two presidential candidates who were in the Senate to vote on the Iraq war in 2002. By highlighting his own opposition to the war, he was subtly invoking Biden’s support for it at the time.
It’s a contrast that could prove pivotal as America’s confrontation with Iran unfolds.
(NASHVILLE, Tenn. ) — United Methodist Church leaders from around the world are proposing a new conservative denomination that would split from the rest of the church in an attempt to resolve a yearslong dispute over gay marriage and gay clergy.
Members of the 13-million-person denomination have been at odds for years over the issue. Some members, especially in the United States, have been demanding full inclusion for LGBTQ people.
A specially called meeting last year failed to resolve the differences. The new proposal envisions an amicable separation in which conservative churches forming a new denomination would retain their assets. The new denomination also would receive $25 million.
The sudden, shocking killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by a U.S. drone at the Baghdad airport is one of those moments when a big door swings violently on a seemingly small hinge. How can the death of one man, largely unknown to the U.S. public, cause such an extraordinary range of potentially dangerous outcomes? What are the options, both for Iran and the U.S. moving forward?
Suleimani was part Niccoli Machiavelli, part Cardinal Richelieu, and part battle-hardened special forces foot soldier. Revered in Tehran, he was despised throughout much of the region. The hackneyed phrase, “he had blood on his hands” doesn’t begin to describe the level of death and destruction he left in his wake across the Middle East. Taking his piece off the chessboard is a tactical success for the U.S., especially given his talent and devotion to the hardline regime. But what is missing is any sense of a strategic direction forward, either for the U.S. or Iran.
Let’s start with Iran, which has the more immediate set of choices to make. Given Soleimani’s role as leader of the Iranian military establishment and his significant political aspirations, Iran’s mullahs will be compelled to respond significantly. Their range of options within the Middle East is wide, and the most obvious one would be direct attacks against US personnel in Afghanistan (where the Iranians have deep pockets of influence in the west of the country), Iraq (doubling down on taking out the U.S. Embassy or targeting personnel), Syria or Saudi Arabia. These could be done with improvised explosive devices, surface-to-surface missiles, or direct combat missions by Iranian special forces.
The Iranians could also turn to the sea, striking U.S. warships of the 5th Fleet in the Arabian Gulf, using diesel submarines, cruise missiles, or so-called “swarm attacks” of small boats or closing the Strait of Hormuz to merchant shipping, something they have consistently threatened and signaled through much of 2019.
They can also attack US allies, unleashing their surrogate Hezbollah against Israel, perhaps using the massive surface-to-surface rocket inventory based in southern Lebanon; renewing attacks against Saudi oilfields, increasing the level of the fall 2019 strikes against oil infrastructure; or seize another tanker from the United Kingdom or other U.S. partners.
Finally, they can also choose less conventional options, perhaps a targeted assassination of a senior U.S. military diplomat or military figure in the region or closer to the U.S. itself, claiming they are responding proportionally. And almost certainly they will attempt to use offensive cyber capability to degrade U.S. military command and control, destroy or manipulate key data in the U.S. financial sector, sow chaos in our transportation infrastructure, or attack the electric grid.
Most likely, they will choose some combination of these options, all designed to give President Trump a bad set of choices – either he will have to take further military action, pushing the U.S. toward another “endless war” that he campaigned on ending; or if he doesn’t act, appearing weak in the face of Iranian action. The Iranians want some form of sanction relief before returning to re-negotiate the failed nuclear weapon accord, but that seems very far away at the moment.
On the U.S. side, the first imperative is to improve defenses across the large threat surface described above. Expect additional deployments of sensors and intelligence gathering systems; missile defense around key U.S. bases such as Al Udid in Qatar; specialized U.S Marine detachments to our embassies around the region; substantial ground troops (the first elements of the 82nd airborne division are en route to Kuwait now); more precision guided air munitions and additional fighter-bombers; perhaps another carrier strike group (an aircraft carrier with an air wing of 70 combat aircraft); and a Marine Expeditionary Unit. That set of deployments is underway now, and more will be planned.
Additionally, the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida are working round-the-clock to build options for the President on the offensive side. While it appears the U.S. will at least pause for the moment and assess the Iranian response to Soleimani’s death, the National Security Council should be gaming out U.S. response if these is an Iranian attack. Some of the U.S. options under consideration would likely include attacks against Iranian conventional military facilities (naval and air bases); strikes on the Iranian fleet at sea; destruction of Iranian oil facilities to include refineries; the Iranian electrical grid; offensive cyber-attacks on key Iranian infrastructure; attacks on Iranian militias in the field in Syria and Iraq; or further targeted attacks against individual members of the Quds force. An important element in this drama is the way Iraq–already a highly divided society–will be crushed between the U.S. and Iran. For the Iraqis, this will represent the ultimate “no win” scenario, and it will only inflame the internal tensions.
Both Iran and the United States will generate competing strategic narratives and attempt to influence global opinion. For the U.S., this means gathering what support is possible from our European partners (which will be scarce) and more likely combining options with the Israelis and Gulf Arabs. On the Iranian side, Russia and China will be important partners at least in the diplomatic sense – particularly as the three nations just completed significant naval exercises together in the north Indian Ocean.
The chances of a climb-down appear remote at this point. The nuclear accord is irreparably broken, Iran will respond strongly to Soleimani’s killing, and likely there will be more U.S. casualties. The Trump administration will then likely escalate, and this all could tumble into a prolonged period of combat – probably not another “forever war” with a large ground troop deployment, but a series of combat encounters of increasing violence that deepen the already deadly animosity between Tehran and Washington. All of this, of course, is occurring with an impeachment as backdrop and an election year in the U.S.
(WASHINGTON) — The United States is sending nearly 3,000 more Army troops to the Mideast as reinforcements in the volatile aftermath of the killing of an Iranian general in a strike ordered by President Donald Trump, defense officials said Friday.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a decision not yet announced by the Pentagon, said the troops are from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. They are in addition to about 700 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne who deployed to Kuwait earlier this week after the storming of the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad by Iran-backed militiamen and their supporters.
The dispatching of extra troops reflects concern about potential Iranian retaliatory action for the killing Thursday of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Quds Force. But it also runs counter to Trump’s repeated push to extract the United States from Mideast conflicts. Prior to this week’s troop deployments, the administration had sent 14,000 additional troops to the Mideast since May, when it first publicly claimed Iran was planning attacks on U.S. interests.
The reinforcements took shape as Trump gave his first comments on the strike, declaring that he ordered the killing of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani because he had killed and wounded many Americans over the years and was plotting to kill many more. “He should have been taken out many years ago,” he added.
The strike marked a major escalation in the conflict between Washington and Iran, as Iran vowed “harsh retaliation” for the killing of the senior military leader. The two nations have faced repeated crises since Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.
The United States urged its citizens to leave Iraq “immediately” as fears mounted that the strike and any retaliation by Iran could ignite a conflict that engulfs the region.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended the strike as “wholly lawful,” saying that Soleimani posed an “imminent” threat against the U.S. and its interests in the region.
“There was an imminent attack,” Pompeo told Fox News. “The orchestrator, the primary motivator for the attack, was Qassem Soleimani.”
The W hite House did not inform lawmakers before the strike. It was expected to give classified briefings to members of Congress and staff in the afternoon. Defense Secretary Mark Esper notified House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the strike shortly before the Pentagon confirmed it publicly.
Pompeo called world leaders Friday to explain and defend Trump’s decision to order the airstrike that has sparked fears of an explosion of anti-American protests as well as more violence in the already unstable Middle East.
The State Department said Pompeo had spoken Friday with top officials in Afghanistan, Britain, China, France, Germany and Pakistan.
In his calls with the British and German foreign ministers as well as China’s state councilor, Pompeo stressed that Trump acted to counter an imminent threat to U.S. lives in the region but also that the U.S. is committed to “de-escalation” of tensions, according to the department’s summaries of the conversations.
De-escalation was not mentioned in the department’s summary of his call with the French foreign minister, nor in his calls with Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani or the Pakistani military chief of staff. In those calls Pompeo “underscored the Iranian regime’s destabilizing actions through the region and the Trump Administration’s resolve in protecting American interests, personnel, facilities and partners,” the department said.
Trump opted not to play a round of golf on Friday, and he was not expected to be seen publicly until he travels to Miami for an afternoon event for his reelection campaign.

(LONDON) — British workers who practice “ethical veganism” to protect animals secured a big win in an employment tribunal when a judge ruled Friday that they are entitled to legal protection from job discrimination.
The judge said that because ethical veganism is a philosophical belief, its adherents are covered by the U.K.’s anti-discrimination law, the 2010 Equality Act.
The ruling came in a claim brought by a man who said he was fired after raising questions about pension fund investments in companies that test products on animals.
Jordi Casamitjana, 55, alleged his dismissal from the League Against Cruel Sports, a British charity that works against animals being abused or killed for sport, resulted from his strong beliefs. The charity did not contest at the hearing whether ethical vegans deserved workplace protections.
Ethical vegans go beyond eating a plant-based diet to try to exclude any form of what they believe is animal exploitation, including not wearing wool or leather clothes.
Tribunal Judge Robin Postle ruled that ethical veganism met the legal criteria for being considered a protected belief under the same section of the Equality Act that prohibits religious discrimination.
Postle found the beliefs held by ethical vegans to be worthy of respect, compatible with human dignity and not conflicting with the rights of others. “I am satisfied overwhelmingly that ethical veganism does constitute a philosophical belief,” he said.
Casamitjana said he hoped his case sets a precedent for other countries.
“This is a very important ruling for vegans everywhere in the world that will inspire other vegans in other countries that don’t have that protection to develop cases that will lead to that protection,” he said.
Casamitjana’s lawyer said that as a result of the ruling, sanctioning workers for ethical veganism will be prohibited in the same way it is illegal to discriminate against workers based on their race, gender, age or sexual orientation.
(BAGHDAD) — Iran has vowed “harsh retaliation” for a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad’s airport that killed Tehran’s top general and the architect of its interventions across the Middle East, as tensions soared in the wake of the targeted killing.
The killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Iran, which has careened from one crisis to another since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.
The United States urged its U.S. citizens to leave Iraq “immediately.” The State Department said the embassy in Baghdad, which was attacked by Iran-backed militiamen and other protesters earlier this week, is closed and all consular services have been suspended.
Around 5,200 American troops are based in Iraq, where they mainly train Iraqi forces and help to combat Islamic State militants.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that a “harsh retaliation is waiting” for the U.S. after the airstrike, calling Soleimani the “international face of resistance.” Khamenei declared three days of public mourning for the general’s death, and appointed Maj. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, Soleimani’s deputy, to replace him as head of the elite Quds force.
Iran also summoned the Swiss charges d’affaires, who represents U.S. interests in Tehran, to protest the killing. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the strike “an act of state terrorism and violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.”
The killing, and any forceful retaliation by Iran, could ignite a conflict that engulfs the whole region, endangering U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and beyond. Over the last two decades, Soleimani had assembled a network of heavily armed allies stretching all the way to southern Lebanon, on Israel’s doorstep.
However, the brazen killing may itself act as a deterrent, with fears of an all-out war leading Iran and its allies to delay or restrain any potential response.
The Defense Department said it killed Soleimani because he “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.” It also accused Soleimani of approving the orchestrated violent protests at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad earlier this week.
The 62-year-old Soleimani was the target of Friday’s attack on an access road near the airport, which was conducted by an armed American drone, according to a U.S. official. The airport strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces. A PMF official said the strike killed a total of eight people, including Soleimani’s son-in-law, whom he did not identify.
A senior Iraqi security official said the airstrike took place near the cargo area after Soleimani had disembarked from a plane arriving from either Syria or Lebanon. PMF officials said the bodies of Suleimani and al-Muhandis were torn to pieces. A senior politician said Soleimani’s body was identified by the ring he wore.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. Trump was vacationing on his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, but sent out a tweet of an American flag.
The dramatic attack comes at the start of a year in which Trump faces both a Senate trial following his impeachment by the Congress and a re-election campaign. It marks a potential turning point in the Middle East and represents a drastic change for American policy toward Iran after months of tensions.
Tehran shot down a U.S. military surveillance drone and seized oil tankers last year. The U.S. also blames Iran for a series of other attacks targeting tankers, as well as a September assault on Saudi Arabia’s oil industry that temporarily halved its production.
The tensions are rooted in in Trump’s decision in May 2018 to withdraw the U.S. from Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers, struck under his predecessor, Barack Obama.
It’s unclear what legal authority the U.S. relied on to carry out the attack. American presidents claim broad authority to act without the approval of the Congress when U.S. personnel or interests are facing an imminent threat. The Pentagon did not provide evidence to back up its assertion that Soleimani was planning new attacks against Americans.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the “highest priority” was to protect American lives and interests, but that “we cannot put the lives of American service members, diplomats and others further at risk by engaging in provocative and disproportionate actions.” She said Congress was not consulted on the strike and demanded it be “immediately” briefed on the next steps.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said Trump had “tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox,” saying it could leave the U.S. “on the brink of a major conflict across the Middle East.” Other Democratic White House hopefuls also criticized Trump’s order.
But Trump allies were quick to praise the action. “To the Iranian government: if you want more, you will get more,” tweeted South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Soleimani’s killing follows the New Year’s Eve protests orchestrated by Iran-backed militias at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, which were not related to the anti-government demonstrations. The two-day embassy attack, which ended Wednesday, prompted Trump to order about 750 U.S. troops deployed to the Middle East. No one was killed or wounded in the protests, which breached the compound but appeared to be mainly a show of force.
The breach followed U.S. airstrikes Sunday that killed 25 fighters of Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia operating in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. military said the strikes were in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that the U.S. blamed on the militia.
U.S. officials have suggested they are prepared to engage in further retaliatory attacks in Iraq.
“The game has changed,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday.

The assassination of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad early Friday morning, in a U.S. airstrike authorized by President Trump, has led to markedly different responses from American allies around the world.
On one side, the U.S.’s European allies gave their qualified support to the strike that killed Soleimani, but immediately urged restraint from both countries in the hopes of avoiding a wider conflagration.
Britain and France led the chorus urging de-escalation. “We have always recognized the aggressive threat posed by the Iranian Quds Force led by Qasem Soleimani,” said British foreign secretary Dominic Raab in a statement. “Following his death, we urge all parties to de-escalate. Further conflict is in none of our interests.”
France’s deputy minister for foreign affairs, Amelie de Montchalin agreed, telling RTL radio on Friday morning that “We are waking up in a more dangerous world. Military escalation is always dangerous.”
And while acknowledging “a whole series of military provocations for which Iran bears responsibility,” a spokesperson for Germany’s government flagged a “dangerous escalation point” in the U.S.-Iran conflict in a statement via The Associated Press, and added that “what matters now is contributing with prudence and restraint to de-escalation.”
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke to European allies Friday, and said on Twitter that the U.S. “remains committed to de-escalation.”
Over in the Middle East, however, Israel and Saudi Arabia, the U.S.’s most powerful allies in the region, were expected to capitalize on the blow to their joint adversary Iran. Soleimani was the powerful leader of the Quds Force, the foreign wing of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is behind Iranian proxy militias across the Middle East, arching from Lebanon, through Iraq and Syria, down to Yemen.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not immediately respond to the Soleimani’s death, however according to reports last year, his top aides had previously discussed plans to assassinate the Iranian general. “Behind the scenes, I expect people like [bin Salman] will all be encouraging Trump to continue with this and hope he strikes Iran again and again,” says David Patrikarakos, author of the book Nuclear Iran. “The Saudis would love to see an escalation to this.”
Over in Israel, embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Soleimani’s death, cutting short a planned trip to Greece. “President Trump deserves all the credit for acting swiftly, forcefully and decisively,” Netanyahu told reporters before boarding a plane back to Jerusalem. “Israel stands with the United States in its righteous struggle for peace, security and self-defense.”
But Netanyahu also reportedly instructed his ministers not to discuss Soleimani’s death publicly. That could be out of fear of retaliation; the Quds Force and Iran-backed militias in Syria are already engaged in a proxy war with Israel. In Lebanon, Iran’s proxy Hezbollah has more than 100,000 rockets capable of hitting the whole of Israel.
“This is great news for the Israelis,” says Patrikarakos. “Unless, of course, Hezbollah starts launching missiles into Israel.”
Still, barring full regime change, Netanyahu would prefer to see the U.S. coax Iran into giving up its nuclear weapons program and ending its proxy wars in the Middle East, as opposed to all-out war, according to Ofer Zalzberg, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, an NGO that monitors and works to prevent conflict globally. “Netanyahu fears this incident lacks a broader U.S. strategy and would either merely escalate dynamics without restraining Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities, or that it would even boomerang, notably with U.S. withdrawal from Iraq,” Zalzberg tells TIME.
Amid the delicate balance, everybody is now watching to see what Iran does next. “Iran simply has to respond,” says Patrikarakos. “It can’t do nothing, because Soleimani was the literal face of Iran in the Middle East. You’ve got the entire Arab Sunni Middle East looking at you now, and if you do nothing, what happens to your deterrence capability?”
“It’s a very precarious situation, because we don’t know about the law of unintended consequences.”
(Bloomberg) — Qasem Soleimani’s deputy Esmail Ghaani has been named commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
The announcement was made after Soleimani was killed by a U.S. airstrike in Iraq, in a major escalation of tensions between Tehran and Washington. Iran has vowed a swift and severe retaliation in response to Soleimani’s death, which officials have described as an act of state-sponsored terrorism.
Bushfires raging across Australia have burned more than 12 million acres—an area approximately the size of the U.S. states of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. The smoke from the blazes in the southwest of the country is visible from space, and it is spreading so far that it is causing haze in New Zealand more 1,000 miles away.
The fire season in Australia is far from over, and already it is shaping up to be one of the most intense in the country’s history.
“The intensity, the scale, the number, the geographical range, the fact that they’re occurring simultaneously, and the sorts of environments that are burning are all extraordinary,” David Bowman, a professor of pyrogeography and fire science and the director of the Fire Centre Research Hub at the University of Tasmania, tells TIME.
“We’re in the middle of a war situation…mass evacuations, the involvement of the military, hugely exhausted firefighting campaigns, it’s difficult to explain.”
The bushfires have caused at least 19 deaths and dozens of people are missing. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed. The military has deployed ships and aircraft to bring supplies to towns ravaged by the fires, and to evacuate residents who were cut off by the flames.
Starting Saturday, conditions are expected to worsen again, with hot weather that will likely intensify the fires.
Here’s what to know about the crisis that’s unfolding in Australia.
How extensive are the fires?
About 12.35 million acres of land have burned across Australia, according to the Associated Press. By comparison, wildfires in California in 2018—which the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection says was “the deadliest and most destructive wildfire season on record” in the state—burned an area of less than 2 million acres.
A map maintained by researchers shows large areas of Australia were burned in 2019, with much of the damage in the last month.
Bushfire risk is currently the highest in New South Wales and Victoria, the most populous states, during Australia’s summer, which runs from December to February, but a state of emergency had already been declared in New South Wales in mid-November over the fires this season. In southern Australia and Tasmania, fire season continues into the fall.
Owen Price, an Associate Professor at the Centre for Environmental Risk Management of Bushfire at the University of Wollongong, tells TIME that approximately 30% of the forest in New South Wales has been burned, but that may increase to around 50% this weekend with the weather forecast.
What’s happening?
At least 200 fires were burning in Australia as of Friday. This week alone, 10 deaths have been confirmed in Victoria and New South Wales.
A fire tracker map maintained by researchers in Western Australia shows fires burning across the country, with fires raging on the southeast coast of Victoria.
Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews on Thursday declared a state of disaster for several areas, and authorities are calling for the evacuation of large areas of the state. Andrews said on his Twitter account that 28 residents of the state are missing.
In the resort town of Mallacoota, where earlier this week some 4,000 residents were forced to flee to the shores as winds pushed a fire through the area, the military is assisting with evacuations.
Australia’s Minister for Defense posted photos on Twitter of Mallacoota residents being evacuated.
57 evacuees have left #Mallacoota on MV Sycamore & around 900 evacuees will leave on HMAS Choules this afternoon.
Evacuees are being transported to the ship on amphibious vehicles.

In New South Wales, where Sydney is located, firefighters are battling more than 130 fires, according to the state’s Rural Fire Service. More than 1,300 homes have been destroyed in the state, according to New South Wales Rural Fire Service.
Authorities in the state this week declared the third state of emergency there since mid-November. The seven day state of emergency began on Friday morning.
Victoria’s Bureau of Meteorology posted pictures of hazy skies, and said that visibility at an airport in the city of Albury, on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, was as low as approximately 1,600 feet.

A map showed “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” air quality levels in parts of New South Wales, Victoria and Australia Capital Territory.
Haze from the fires was impacting places as far away as New Zealand, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. An image captured by a NASA satellite captured large swath of smoke from the fires stretching across the Tasman Sea.
The fires are going to get worse
Although conditions had cooled in Australia this week, more hot weather is expected to exacerbate the crisis over the weekend. Victoria’s Bureau of Meteorology predicted “severe” and “extreme” fire danger ratings for several parts of the state due to hot temperatures and changes in the wind.
Bowman, the researcher in Tasmania, says that the scale of fires already burning means that when the weather heats up, fires intensify quickly.
“Every time you get the weather set up, as we’re entering in the next 24 hours, the fires just explode again and you have even bigger fires and new fires and new fire fronts and new lightening strikes…it’s a diabolical ratchet.”
New South Wales’ Rural Fire Service posted a map of current areas burned and expected spread of the fire on Saturday.
Fire Spread Prediction for Sat 4 Jan 2020 Dangerous fires in Shoalhaven, South Coast, Snowy Mountains & areas surrounding Greater Sydney. You should not be in potential spread areas or potential ember attack areas on Saturday. #nswrfs#nswfirespic.twitter.com/Ry14FXgPR2
Bowman says that there are other bushfire prone areas that may be in danger.
“Here in Tasmania, the whole of the east coast could blow up. There’s a big chunk of forest around Melbourne, tall forests around Melbourne…in southwestern Australia there’s still plenty to burn,” Bowman says.
“The door is open and we have no idea where this is going to end,” he says. “Most of Australia’s vegetation is highly flammable, the fire has plenty to go, it has capacity to keep burning, it’s not going to run out of fuel.”
What role is climate change playing?
Experts say that climate change is contributing to the historically intense fire season.
“Climate change is supercharging the fires,” Lesley Hughes, a professor of biology at Macquarie University and a Climate Councillor at the Climate Council of Australia, tells TIME. “It has affected the ongoing decline of rainfall and therefore impacts of the current drought that we’re experiencing, especially in southeastern Australia” she says.
Hughes adds that climate change may also be causing more frequent and severe heatwave conditions in the country. The year 2019 was the hottest on record for Australia, with the temperature reaching approximately 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above the long-term average, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology.
“When you have the combination of very hot, dry days, strong winds, and very dry fuel, if you get any sort of spark, you have the conditions for a very bad bushfire,” Hughes says.
Despite the bushfire crisis, Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has argued that there is no direct link between Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions and the severity of the fires burning across the country. He has, however, acknowledged that climate change could be impacting bushfires and the length of the fire season. Australia is one of the highest per capita emitters of carbon dioxide in the world, according to Climate Analytics, an advocacy group that tracks climate data.
Hughes says that the government’s stance on climate change is hurting its ability to respond to the crisis.
“If you don’t accept the science—that’s been saying for at least 30 years that these are the sort of conditions we should be preparing for and mitigating against—then you come to a disaster like this completely unprepared.”
Political backlash
Australia’s Prime Minister has faced backlash over the crisis, both for his reluctance to link Australia’s emissions to the bushfires and for his response to the fires. Protests broke out at Morrison’s office in December, with some demonstrators demanding action on climate change, while others criticized Morrison for taking a vacation to Hawaii during the fire crisis. The Prime Minister cut short his family holiday and apologized for the timing of his trip.
Alex Oliver, Director of Research at the Sydney-based think-tank Lowy Institute, tells TIME that the Morrison government’s stance on climate change has angered some Australians who see climate change as a serious problem and want to see the government take stronger action.
On Saturday morning Morrison announced a cancellation of an economic visit to India in order to chair a National Security Committee meeting, Sky News Australia reports.
On Thursday, Morrison was confronted by angry residents of a bushfire-ravaged town who cursed at him and insulted him on a visit to the town.
Some residents refused to shake his hand, others made obscene gestures and called him an “idiot” and worse.
Sarah Maddison, a professor of politics at the University of Melbourne, tells TIME that Morrison’s response to the situation has been “extraordinarily misjudged.”
“He seems determined to minimize the scale and impact of these fires, insisting that this is the kind of natural disaster that Australia experiences all the time,” she says.
Maddison tells TIME that bushfires have in the past often been used by Australia’s leaders to garner political support.
“They put on their Akubras [Australian hat] and they head out to the front line and they offer condolences and they get to set the narrative about… their leadership of the issue,” she says.
For Morrison, the fires appear to have had the opposite effect, she says.
“He seems to be scurrying around with his tail between his legs, so determined to avoid talking about climate policy that he’s unable to offer anything that looks like genuine compassion or empathy.”

MUMBAI: The government is considering a litigation settlement scheme in the upcoming budget that will allow companies to put an end to legacy tax disputes by paying a portion of the money demanded by the revenue department, said four people with knowledge of the matter. This could help bridge the fiscal deficit gap and monetise a part of the amount stuck in tax litigation, they said.An estimated 500,000 cases have been pending in the courts and quasi-judicial forums for years and it could take a long while before the tax department sees any of the money, assuming it eventually wins. The total value of these disputes is pegged at Rs 7-8 lakh crore, said the people.A government task force had recommended the litigation settlement scheme in July last year. Such a move will also help improve ease of doing business. Separately, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had set up a panel to help reduce tax litigation in February last year focused on resolving pending direct tax disputes urgently.Precise details of the proposal under consideration aren't available but it could be along the lines of the Sabka Vishwas--Legacy Dispute Resolution Scheme, which is aimed at reducing old service tax and central excise cases, said the persons cited above.73094408 The Sabka Vikas scheme could collect about Rs 30,000 crore. "There are over Rs 8 lakh crore stuck in direct tax litigation and a resolution scheme could be a good way to unlock value for the government," said Girish Vanvari, founder of tax advisory Transaction Square."The government should come out with this scheme where companies could settle the disputes by paying, say 10-20% of the tax demand. There are several companies that would like to avail this scheme."The government could ask companies to pay part of the disputed amount along with interest and penalties levied on that, EThas learnt. Or it could ask them to pay 40-50% of the tax demanded. The tax rate may not be the same for every company — it could depend on the litigation amount and even the details of the case."A litigation settlement scheme in direct tax is one of ways the government can aim to bridge a part of the fiscal deficit gap," said Gautam Mehra, partner and leader, tax and regulatory, PwC India. "While the increase in the threshold limits for higher litigation has reduced the number of cases under litigation, given the large stakes involved, it yet could have a potential of netting in good revenues for the government, while at the same time reducing the cost and effort involved in litigation at both ends."The fiscal deficit stood at Rs 8.07 lakh crore at the end of November last year, 13% above the full-year target, as per the Controller General of Accounts. This comes as revenue collections have been below expectation. To be sure, goods and services tax (GST) collections were at Rs 1.03 lakh crore in December but the annual figure could still fall short of the government's internal target of Rs 1.25 lakh crore. Direct tax collections were estimated at Rs 5.5 lakh crore by the end of September last year, 16% short of the internal target.Experts said the Sabka Vikas scheme had worked unlike previous ones that failed to attract companies because they offered few options. "The recent scheme in indirect taxes has met with success with estimates of over Rs 30,000 crore of revenue collections until now, which was possible since the scheme also left something on the table for the taxpayer," said Mehra of PwC.
NEW DELHI| MUMBAI: Oil prices jumped $3 on Friday after a US air strike killed a top Iranian general, escalating tension in the world's biggest crude-exporting region and stoking fears of a supply disruption. The impact of any possible retaliation worried key importers like India where fuel prices are already at a 13-month high.India's benchmark stock indices fell 0.4%, logging their worst weekly performance in a month, as global markets declined with rising tensions. Gold surged Rs 700 to Rs 39,872 per 10 gm and advanced toward a six-year high internationally. The rupee lost about 0.60%, or 44 paise, to close at 71.80 per dollar. Wall Street stocks opened sharply lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.56% at press time. 73088050 Although local equity indices recovered some ground after dropping as much as 0.7%, the biggest one-day gain in four months in the local fear gauge India VIX showed that sentiment will remain wobbly amid concerns of retaliation by Iran. Any further surge in crude oil prices will also be a threat to India's fiscal deficit, which is budgeted at 3.3% of gross domestic product in the year ending March 31.Iran vowed "severe retaliation" after Qassem Soleimani was killed by US missiles in Baghdad, triggering speculation about its next move and turmoil in the oil market early Friday. Brent crude rose as much as $69.16 a barrel, the highest since attacks on Saudi Arabian oil infrastructure in September.India, which imports 84% of its oil needs and nearly 60% of it from the Middle East, is closely watching the situation in the Gulf region."We will have to see how Iran reacts to it. That would determine how the oil market behaves hereon," said an oil ministry official after a meeting with top executives of state refiners. The September drone attack on the Saudi facility, which hit 5% of the world's oil supply, caused barely any supply disruption but briefly sent prices soaring. Quick supply management by the Saudis and abundant supply elsewhere brought prices to pre-attack levels quickly."After the Saudi attack, it was feared that there would be escalation and supplies will get disrupted but that didn't happen. Let's see if Iran shows the same maturity as Saudi did," Indian Oil chairman Sanjiv Singh told ET. Refiners can plan for minor disruptions but if the region goes up in flames, no plan can really work, said an executive at a state refiner. Most Asian equity markets ended weak, with Japan's Nikkei dropping 0.8%. Investors shifted away from risky assets. The Sensex fell 162 points to 41,464.61and the Nifty was down 55.55 points at 12,226.65, having hit a record in the previous session. India VIX surged 10.5% to 12.7. Oil marketing companies ended in the red and other sectors linked to oil prices such as paint manufacturers, also slipped. Asian Paints was the worst performer on the Sensex, down over 2%.Axis Bank, NTPC, State Bank of India, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank and Maruti ended down 1-2%. The BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.4% and the BSE SmallCap index ended flat. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought Indian shares worth Rs 1,263.05 crore and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,029 crore on Friday."Tensions building up in the Middle East have led to spike in crude oil prices and there is a negative undertone across global markets," said Harsha Upadhyaya, chief investment officer, equity, Kotak Mahindra AMC. "Any upside in crude oil prices would be negative for India as it is coming at a time when fiscal space to kick-start the economy is limited." The rupee joined other currencies in weakening."An element of uncertainty weighed on investors with rising crude oil prices," said Shreeshanth Arayangat, chief dealer at DCB Bank."The rupee's fall is in line with other emerging markets as investors seek safety of US-backed assets. The weakness is likely to extend unless the political turmoil between US and Iran dilutes down bringing stability in global oil prices."The benchmark bond yield rose marginally to close at 6.51% Friday. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions. The central bank will on Monday buy longer maturity bonds while selling shorter duration papers for Rs 10,000 each, seeking to bring yields down in line with the policy rate.Such a move was seen positive for bond market as yields were expected to fall."This has checked any sharp rise in yields as traders won't turn panicky unless US and Iran are engaged in a full-blown war," said a senior executive at a large bond house.Oil prices had jumped nearly 15% in the last quarter of 2019 on the extension of a production cut pact by key producers, including OPEC members and Russia. Friday's attack drove prices up more than 4% and dimmed hopes of a global economic recovery."The market is adding a risk premium on fears things could escalate," said UBS Group AG analyst Giovanni Staunovo in a Bloomberg report."The Middle East is a powder keg — too much oil comes out of the region and no one knows if and how Iran will respond." For a heavy energy importer like India, high oil prices cut consumer spending, stoke inflation, erode forex reserves, expand the current account deficit, balloon the fuel subsidy bill and leave less resources for more productive public spending.India is estimated to spend $112 billion on oil imports in FY20 but runaway prices could expand this further.A sharp rise in domestic fuel prices, which are deregulated and linked to international fuel rates, triggers consumer clamour for price control. Domestic rates of petrol and diesel are at a 13-month high.Although the year started off on a positive note for Indian equities due to easing US-China trade war tensions and expectations of growthboosting measures from the government in the February 1 budget, the immediate focus of investors will be on any retaliation from Iran. A hit on the balance of payments front could hurt India at a time when growth is weakening. Growth in the three months ended September fell to 4.5% — the lowest reading since 4.3% recorded for the January-March quarter of 2013."Oil is likely to be on the boil. Bad for large oil importing countries, especially those with large trade and current account deficit like India," said Ajay Bodke, CEO-PMS at Prabhudas Lilladher.Bodke said investors may again find comfort in large-caps and shun mid and small-cap stocks which had outperformed the benchmarks recently.Bond yields also need to be watched as any outflows by foreign investors due to rising risk-aversion may spark a selloff, leading to a rise in bond yields, said Bodke.War between the US and Iran could be damaging for global growth."The major concern for the world economy is that events spiral out of control and the US launches a fullblown military assault on Iran...the resulting collapse in Iran's economy could knock as much as 0.3%-pts off the global GDP – equal to our estimate of the damage from the US-China trade war," said Capital Economics in a note. "In EMs, those countries where higher oil prices exacerbate balance of payments strains or an inflation problem would probably hike interest rates. Turkey would be a prime candidate, but India would face strains too."Iran threatened to hit back hard after the US air strike killed Soleimani, commander of the elite Quds Force.Soleimani, a general, was regarded as the second most powerful figure in Iran after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. India plans to start 5G trials soon, ahead of the spectrum auction."We are not expecting any large scale commercialisation of 5G phones in 2020 because of the uncertainty around 5G network. It is difficult to say whether debt-laden telecom operators will be able to bid for highpriced 5G spectrum auction in 2020," said Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Technology Market Research. LOS ANGELES: US President Donald Trump has accused the slain Iranian military leader Qassam Soleimani of being responsible for terrorist plots in New Delhi."Soleimani made the death of innocent people his sick passion, contributing to terrorist plots as far away as New Delhi and London,a Trump said on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Flordia.Speaking about the missile strike he ordered to kill Soleimani, he said, "Today we remember and honour the victims of Soleimani's many atrocities and we take comfort in knowing that his reign of terror is over."73088050 While Trump did not specify the plots in India, he may have been referring to a 2012 bombing of the car of the wife of the Israeli defence attache to India.Tal Yehoshua Koren was injured and underwent surgery to remove shrapnel and her driver and two bystanders were also hurt in the attack on February 13, 2012, using a bomb that was attached to the vehicle with a magnet.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Iran was behind that attack and another attempted attack using similar technique in Georgia. The New Delhi case not been resolved so far and a conclusive link to Iran has not been made by India.News reports at that time said that the attack was carried out by Iran in retaliation for the killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan in Teheran using a bomb with a magnet attached to his car, allegedly by Israelis. An Indian journalist, Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi, was arrested on March 6 that year and accused of being a part of a conspiracy to carry out the attack and held under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.He was released on bail by the Supreme Court in October on the condition that he does not go abroad.AAccording to news reports at that time, Delhi police alleged that he had carried out reconnaissance for the Iranians who carried out the attack. The five persons who carried out the attacks were Iranian members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard who had visited Delhi, police were quoted as saying. They were not arrested although police identified them.An Iranian major general, Soleimani was the leader of the Quds force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards. But his name did not figure in the reports at that time on theAIndian attack. In his address on the killing of Soleimani in Iraq on Thursday, Trump said on Friday, "Soleimani was plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him."He listed several alleged attacks directed by Soleimani and carried out by the Quds Force and allied militias."For years, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its ruthless Quds Force -- under Soleimani's leadership -- has targeted, injured, and murdered hundreds of American civilians and servicemen," Trump said.He blamed Soleimani fro the recent attacks on US targets in Iraq, including rocket strikes that killed an American and injured four American servicemen, as well as the assault on the US embassy in Baghdad earlier this week.

Top Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an adviser to Soleimani, was also killed in the attack. Khamenei appointed Soleimani's deputy, Brigadier General Esmail Ghaani, to replace him as Quds Force head. With inputs from Saikat Das
By James Herron, Grant Smith and Alex LongleyThe US assassination of one of Iran's most powerful generals has the oil industry bracing for something it has long feared and anticipated -- direct military confrontation between the two adversaries. In the hours after President Donald Trump ordered the killing at Baghdad airport of Qassem Soleimani, who led Iran's Quds force, crude oil surged, American workers began to withdraw from Iraqi fields and traders scrambled to position themselves for even higher prices."We should all be bracing for a ferocious response," said Helima Croft, chief commodities strategist at RBC Capital Markets. "The stage is set for a retaliatory spiral that could keep markets on edge well into 2020."Rising tensions between the Iran and the US have already caused unprecedented disruptions to oil markets, but so far they've been short-lived. Last year, Washington blamed Tehran for sabotage attacks on supertankers and a missile and drone attack on Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq crude-processing plant in September -- the largest single supply halt in the industry's history. An escalation into direct fighting between US and Iranian forces in the world's most important oil-producing region would have longer lasting consequences for the global economy.Severe RetaliationIran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif denounced the attack on Twitter as "an act of international terrorism." The country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened "severe retaliation."The Iranian leadership is signaling that it will probably target US military installations and bases in the Middle East and mobilize its network of militias across the region. One official told the state broadcaster that some 36 US military bases and facilities are within reach of Iran's defense forces, with the closest being in Bahrain. The US State Department issued a directive urging American citizens to leave Iraq immediately due to the threat.Iraq is the second-largest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, pumping 4.65 million barrels a day last month. It's immediate neighbors in the region -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran -- together produce about 15 million barrels a day. Most of their exports leave the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that Iran has repeatedly threatened to shut down if there's a war.Emergency MeetingsBeyond the initial 4.8 per cent surge in New York crude futures to an eight-month high, there were other signals in the market that people were preparing for further disruption.Volatility rose to its highest level in a month and the cost of derivatives that insure against price spikes increased. Four million barrels of options contracts that would profit from a jump in Brent crude to $95 a barrel traded for both March and September. 73094172 Two commodity-trading houses called emergency meetings of senior staff on Friday to assess the new risks to the oil market, said people familiar with the matter.Possible retaliation could include targeted strikes on oil facilities in the area, attacks on pipelines or oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, Citigroup Inc. analysts including Ed Morse said in a report."We expect retaliation to be in the region, most likely in Iraq," analysts at ESAI Energy LLC said in a report. "This could have significant impact on crude oil prices."Vulnerable TargetsIraq's oil fields are working normally, the country's Oil Minister Thamir Ghadhban told Bloomberg by phone on Friday. Four US citizens working at an Exxon Mobil Corp.-operated project have been asked to leave, he said."We are closely monitoring the situation in Iraq," ExxonMobil said in an emailed statement. The company declined to comment on specific staffing levels, but said it has "programs and measures in place to provide security to protect its people, operations and facilities."Italy's Eni SpA, which operates Iraq's Zubair field, also said it's monitoring the situation, while BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc declined to comment.International companies have reason to be cautious as Iranian proxies have repeatedly proved their ability to strike targets within Iraq. The latest escalation in tensions came after a rocket attack on a military base late last month, which killed an American contractor and wounded several US and Iraqi military personnel."The Soleimani hit moves us closer to a full-blown war scenario than Abqaiq," Bobb McNally, a former energy adviser to President George W. Bush and president of the consulting firm Rapidan Energy Group, said on Twitter. Still, "both DC and Tehran want to avoid war and will try to contain brinkmanship," he said.--With assistance from Rakteem Katakey, Kevin Crowley and Javier Blas.
India's government-run companies have a problem of perception with stock investors, thanks to a legacy of unprofessional management, irrational profit extraction and random offloading of shares by the promoter entity. As some PSUs come out of these traps and turn more nimble-footed, contrarian investors are rushing in to capture value.Market veteran Shyam Sekhar is vocal about it. "Public sector stocks have been beaten down irrationally in the past despite superior balance sheets, just because the government is their owner," says he.Take out the name of the owner and look at their balance sheets, profit & loss statements and payouts, and you find these companies have done significantly better than their private sector peers, says Sekhar, who runs contrarian investment advisory firm iThought as Chief Ideator & Founder,.Out of the 62 stocks in the BSE PSU index, 16 gave positive returns for last one year, while the rest plunged up to 59 per cent.Indian Bank, Allahabad Bank, Chennai Petroleum Corporation, IFCI and Central Bank of India were among those that reduced investor wealth by more than half.Sekhar says if the government manages to sell a few PSUs, as it is planning to do, these stocks will go through a significant re-rating."I would expect a semblance of normalcy to return if the government shows that it is serious about selling these companies or letting private owners take over and run them," said the Chennai-based wealth manager.Economy-market divergence normal?Sekhar, who has spent nearly three decades on Dalal Street, finds nothing abnormal about the divergence between a slowing economy and a performing market. The market usually tends to move ahead of the economy, says he."If you notice, during the 2018 boom in smaller stocks, the market was unwilling to buy larger companies. And now it has shifted away from those companies back into larger names. This is reflective of the fact that the market is actually ahead of the economy," Sekhar says.India's GDP growth rate has been on a downtrend since April 2018 and hit over six-year low of 4.5 per cent in September quarter, 2019. BSE Sensex expanded 25.17 per cent between April, 2018 and December, 2019, while BSE Smallcap Index tanked 19.60 per cent and BSE Midcap Index 6.20 per cent.Sekhar points out that the valuation gap between largecaps and the broader market actually widened during this period."The market has been polarised between extremely overvalued and extremely undervalued stocks. I would expect a convergence to happen between these two parts, and that will allow investors to find out the overvalued companies and price in the chances of a correction. On the other hand, there is value hunting in the extremely undervalued parts of the market, and this will probably continue all through 2020," says the market veteran. Some analysts expect India's economic growth to start reviving in the second half of 2020, which they say would infuse blood in midcaps and smallcaps to help outperform their largecap peers.Sekhar believes companies that have operating leverage will come into their own now. "Many of the undervalued stocks typically belong to those businesses which have taken a lot of capital investments in the past but have not yet seen the operating leverage kick in," he adds. 73033201 Downturn domestically engineeredMarket regulator Sebi and the government has carried out several changes in last few years, which Sekhar thinks were ill-timed. In his opinion, while they were well intentioned, bad timing caused them to engineer the downturn in the broader market."Everybody knew the market's investment focus was in small- and mid-sized companies. So when you suddenly alter the rules of the game, such a disruption probably creates more damage. I believe the damage was not anticipated at the time of formulating the changes. In that sense the most well-intentioned move of cleaning of the system has actually created a very sharp reaction," Sekhar says.Pointing especially at Sebi's recategorisation of mutual funds, which created a liquidity crunch in the broader market, Sekhar said companies should be classified on enterprise value instead of market-cap.Through the recategorisation, Sebi put the top 100 companies by market-cap in the largecap category, the next 150 firms in midcaps and the rest in the smallcap segment."We should not leave it to the market. Stock categorization should be independent of the market's irrationality. This would be a more stable way of categorising stocks to benefit investors," says the Chennai-based investor.Political turmoil not a problemSekhar is not too perturbed by the ongoing political tensions in the country and does not see it as a threat to the market. Protests and government interference are part of the democratic process, says he."A right balance should be struck between the two rights. I do not think we should take such a grim view of the democratic processes. Only when a democratic process is not met by a democratic process, only then do you have a problem," he feels. He says foreign investors will be more pragmatic and come to India despite these issues, as India has got the potential to regain growth rates whereas many other markets are not at that level. He says financialisation would be key theme to play going ahead, as it has a long runway. He also likes tourism and domestic services as they are under-penetrated areas with huge potential because of a change in the way millennials spend money.

India, till not so long ago, could not churn out enough software programmers to keep up with demand. Although the demand still exists, it has become more complex and specialised. Thomas Frey, who advises companies on future trends, says every job will be a technology job going forward. "Emerging technology will provide a lot more opportunities, where every job will have a technology element to it. It will not be about humans versus artificial intelligence, but about working with them.People, however, need to be taught how to do this and enhance their skills," the famed futurist and celebrity speaker said. The Indian IT industry is at the crossroads. It needs to take strategic decisions to remain relevant in the future.Individuals will need to upskill to ensure career longevity even as automation takes over certain jobs.Careers in vogue right now may not even exist a decade later.Blockchain, cryptocurrency, robotics and autonomous vehicles —all emerging technologies — will become mainstream over the next decade, requiring thousands of specialists.Anil Talreja, partner, Deloitte, Haskins & Sells says that people who can design and engineer apps and new use cases for technology will always remain in high demand. We will also have access to vast amounts of data going forward."There will be huge demand for people who can analyse and structure this data such that it can be useful. While management consultants may not be needed, we will need data analysts, designers and engineers who can create algorithms to retrieve and structure this data," he said. So, what will the technology jobs of the future look like?ET asked a few thought leaders and compiled a list of the most likely roles.Data DriversSolutions based on Artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things will become commonplace. This, in turn, will require an army of people to manage the data they generate."As we leverage the human machine interface and as AI implementation increases, we will need a lot more people to work on data tagging and cleaning and labelling, creating millions of new jobs," said Debjani Ghosh, president of IT industry lobby Nasscom. "We will need people to work with machines to do it and if India can build skills, then we can do it. This would solve an existing problem, plus create jobs."Designing systems that can analyse and parse this data, while meeting ever evolving privacy norms across borders will be another requirement that will emerge across industry verticals.By 2030, 500 billion devices are expected to be connected to the internet. The data from many of these sensors are of importance to businesses, which require data scientists to analyse and help take business decisions. It also would throw up an opportunity for people who design these sensors, apart from implementing them across newer industries and finding new use cases.Cybersecurity ExpertsIn the future, the world will be even more connected than it is today. Personal devices, machines, appliances, automobiles, everything will be connected to the internet, and emerge as a a potential target for cyber criminals. This will need far more people than today to anticipate the potential threats and create solutions for them. The electricity grid, the water supply system and the traffic lights will all be connected and any disruption could potentially create chaos in cities. India will require thousands of security experts who design systems that can constantly monitor threats, but also prevent attacks. Already, we see cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated in terms of the attack methodologies. These are still restricted primarily to computers but it is only a matter of time before all connected devices are under threat. In addition to cyber security firms, these professionals would also be employed by device manufacturers and designers, to build in security features at the core of the deviceEvery Job will be a Tech JobLawyers and doctors will exist in the future, too, but those jobs will morph into tech jobs. "Roles like HR which are currently non-tech will become tech jobs. These will require a tech bent of mind," said Shekhar Sanyal, country head, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, India. Robotic process automation and bots will thrive in the workplace and HR professionals will need to understand technology and business to understand their implications. Within consumer products, too, things will change. The world buys close to 1.5 billion pairs of shoes a year. In the future, we will be able to slice and dice this depending on usage, and embed the required technology to enhance its functionality, such as a smart golfing shoe or to manage an injury. Gig workers will be the norm, experts say, moving across domains on the basis of their expertise in a specific technology area. What this will require is a change in how certain skills are taught in universities, with some basic tech skills being taught as part of the core curriculum, irrespective of the stream.Traffic Monitoring JobsDrones for delivery and driverless cars will spur mini-industries of their own. Control rooms of the future will require traffic management skills that include operating drones, managing autonomous cars, besides regular vehicles. Beyond command centre operators, designers, programmers and cybersecurity experts will be needed to ensure smooth functioning.Personal robots will also start replacing human assistants, in healthcare assistance or in customer service roles. This will require a dedicated ecosystem to build these robots and apps and maintain them, while keeping privacy and customer care at the core. From UI/UX skills to creating specialised program architecture, maintaining and keeping these robots secure will require a dedicated fleet of developers.Healthcare WorkersIt is estimated that there will be 300 million more people over the age of 65 in 2030, compared to the number in 2014. Spends on healthcare will increase, but healthcare as we know it today would have changed.Debjani Ghosh said health workers enabled by machines providing care would become more prevalent."If this is done in a structured way, then millions of jobs could be created. There is strong government support for skilling initiatives," she said. When AI and robotics move to implementation stage, it will create opportunities across industries. The way doctors and nurses do their jobs will be greatly impacted by how technology evolves. Personal care robots will be ubiquitous, need ing a dedicated set of tech workers to run and maintain them. These would function in collaboration with healthcare professionals. Digitisation of personal health and preventive healthcare will turn into a separate industry, driven almost entirely by data and tech professionals, and not healthcare workers.Space Tech JobsIndia's space programme looks at tapping the private sector to build satellites and rockets to launch them from its spaceports. As Isro focuses on outer space missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus and the Sun and plans its first human space flight in the next two years, it will increasingly depend on the private sector to build and launch communication and remote sensing satellites. It also is looking to make India a hub to build small satellites and launch them from Indian soil, an industry, which officials say, has potential to replicate the country's software industry. Elon Musk's SpaceX has made people rethink space travel and exploration, according to Thomas Frey. Space tourism will create a mini industry of tech experts. Mission planning, launch management and experience design will have to be looked at through a tech lens, creating thousands of jobs requiring specialised skills.
Tatas vs Mistry: Ratan Tata moves SC against NCLAT order restoring Mistry 'The findings of the appellate tribunal are wrong, erroneous, contrary to the record of the case'
Recycling newspaper is incredibly easy since there isn't anything unique about newspaper that makes it difficult to process. Most newspapers can be included with your standard recyclables. Contact your municipal government to find out how you should sort your recycling for pickup. If you prefer, you can also compost your newspaper alongside leaves, food waste, and lawn trimmings. If you want to get more use out of your newspaper before recycling or composting it, use it as a packing material, gift wrap, weed killer, or window cleaner.
Contact your municipal government to see if they take newspaper. There is nothing special about newspaper that makes it hard to recycle. However, some local governments have unique restrictions on what type of recyclables can be put in the same bin, and some require that papers and plastics be separated. Call your local streets and sanitation department to see what their recycling requirements are for newspapers.[1]
Look online to find your local streets and sanitation or waste collection department's phone number. It may also be printed on your recycling bin if your city provided you with it.
The vast majority of the time, your city's waste collection department will tell you that newspaper can be stuffed in the same bin as your other plastics, papers, and cardboard boxes.
Place your newspaper in your standard recycling bin. Fold your newspaper flat so that it fits in your recycling bin and doesn't take up a ton of space. Set it outside for your weekly pick-up alongside your cardboard and other paper.[2]
Keep your recyclables away from food contamination by holding on to your takeout containers and disposable plates. Food-waste and greasy residue belongs in the trash, not your recycling bin.
Take your newspapers to a recycling plant if your city doesn't pick up. If your local government doesn't recycle or they refuse to take newspapers, you can take them to a plant yourself. Look online to find recycling plants in your area. Call the closest plant and ask them if they take newspaper. If they do, wait until you've filled a bin with newspapers. Then, drive them to the local plant and drop them off for recycling,[3]
Unless the plant has a special focus on materials that are difficult to process, the recycling plant near you will have no problem taking your newspaper.
Most municipal plants do not charge a fee for dropping materials off.
Create a compost bin or pile, using your newspaper as filler. Composting is the process of piling up organic materials and allowing them to decompose over time. This can be done in a bin, box, or free-standing pile. Choose to set up a composting bin or box if you want to keep your compost contained. If you have a large yard, a free-standing pile is perfectly fine.[4]
You need a mix of "green" and "brown" materials to compost. Green materials refer to organics that are usually green, like plants, flowers, and food waste. Browns tend to be white or brown. Newspapers count as a brown for composting purposes, even if they are white or gray in color.
Get a bin with a lid if you're worried about smell. It isn't essential for the composting process, though.
Layer your newspapers in the bottom half of a compost bin or pile. To effectively compost, you need an equal mixture of green and brown layers. Since newspaper takes longer to break down than standard organic waste and can blow away in the wind, lay it out flat in the bottom half of your bin to keep it weighed down. You can add any number of layers, but the more you add, the longer it will take to break down.[5]
It doesn't matter what type of newspaper you use or how many layers you add. The bigger your compost pile is, the longer it will take to break down, though.
Incorporate your newspaper in thinner layers if you want them to compost as quickly as possible.
Include a mixed set of green and brown layers for maximum effectiveness.
Add your compost by hand or with a shovel. You shouldn't add any toxic materials to the pile to begin with, so it will be fine to touch the compost.
Wait 2-4 weeks for your pile to begin breaking down. Compost will break down naturally over time. Eventually, it will turn into a soil-like substance that you can use in your yard as fertilizer. Leave the pile alone for 2-4 weeks to let it start to break down.[6]
Mix your pile and wait another 3-4 weeks for your compost to break down. The amount of time that it takes for your compost to decompose depends upon the materials, the temperature, and the air flow your compost is exposed to. After the first 2-4 weeks have passed, use a shovel or trowel to mix your pile up. Mix the pile once a week to continue introducing air, which will aid in the breakdown of the organic materials. Wait another 3-4 weeks for your pile to break down into a soil-like material.[7]
It may take longer than 6 weeks for your compost to break down if you have a really large pile.
Use your compost in the garden as a topsoil. Compost is a nutrient-rich material that will promote healthy plant growth in your garden. Once your compost has broken down, spread it out across your garden as a topsoil to incorporate it into your yard or garden.[8]
Start a new compost pile or bin once you spread your decomposed compost out.
You can tell when a compost pile is done decomposing when you can no longer identify the ingredients that you originally added. It should look like a uniform mound of soil-like debris.
Use old newspaper as gift wrap to cut back on waste. Instead of spending money on fancy gift wrap, use stacks of old newspaper to wrap your gifts. Lay a sheet of newspaper flat and place your box or item in the center of the paper. Pull a corner up and smooth it down with the palm of your hand. Use a piece of tape to affix the corner to your item and repeat for the other corners. Use multiple sheets layered on top of one another to cover the item.[9]
Keep shipped goods from breaking with newspaper. Newspaper is soft and makes a great packing material. Instead of using bubble wrap or packing peanuts, fill your boxes with crumpled newspaper to keep your goods from breaking or shattering while they're being shipped.[10]
Packing peanuts and bubble wrap are extremely difficult to recycle. This is a good way to avoid introducing them into the environment.
Do not use newspaper to keep perishable goods safe. The ink on the paper may make its way into the organic material.[11]
Clean windows and glass with black and white newspaper. The next time you grab some window cleaner to clean your windows, use newspapers instead of paper towels. Spread the newspaper out around your palm and wipe your windows using a circular motion after spraying them with the cleaner. Dry newspaper can also be used to wipe your cleaner off and wipe your window dry.[12]
Don't use paper with color ink on it to do this. Sometimes, colored ink breaks down and wipes off when it gets wet. Black and white newspaper will be fine though.
If you really want to cut back on your carbon footprint, use a mixture of 1-part vinegar and 1-part water instead of a commercial cleaner.
You can compost your vinegar-soaked newspaper after you're done. You can't recycle it in your standard recycling bin, though.
Smother weeds in your garden with newspaper stacks. To use newspaper in your garden, grab a stack of 5-10 newspapers. Take them to a weed-infested area of your garden and lay them directly on top of the weeds. Then, cover the newspapers with wood chips or mulch to smother the weeds and keep them from spreading. Over time, your newspapers will decompose on top of the weeds and work their way into your soil, killing the weeds in the process.[13]
This is a good way to get rid of newspapers naturally without introducing harmful chemicals into your garden.
Ivy is a prolific and lush plant that can add a lot of green to your landscape or your home. Whether you want ivy for your yard or for inside your home, growing ivy from cuttings is an easy process that will save you the cost of buying new plants. Start by gathering your cuttings, then root them in soil or water. Keep them in a warm area that gets indirect light and repot them the following spring. With just a little bit of effort and some time, you will have an abundance of new ivy plants that you didn't have to purchase.
Take cuttings from ivy in the late summer or early fall. This is the time of year when there will be fresh growth on the plant, which is especially good for cuttings. Also, the weather will be ideal in the fall to get the cuttings started. Aim to take cuttings before cold weather sets in.[1]
Taking cuttings at this time of year will also make the timing right for planting your new plants in the spring if they are going outside.
Look for young, fresh growth on an existing plant. Ivy cuttings work best when they are made from the current year's growth. You can identify new growth by looking for the parts of the ivy plant that look fresh and light green, not the older areas that have dark green leaves and thick stems.[2]
This kind of cutting is called a semi-ripe cutting. It is taken from this year's growth, not older sections.
Avoid picking out pieces that are damaged or have unusual growth patterns.
Find a stem that has 3 to 4 nodes on it for best results. Hold the stem with 1 hand just above one of the nodes. Locate a spot right above the nodes or a set of leaves, so that the leaves will be left on the stem after you cut it.[3]
Use clean garden shears or a knife to cut off at least . Using clean shears will reduce the chance of introducing a disease or pest onto the cutting as you gather it. To sterilize your shears, wipe isopropyl or rubbing alcohol over the entire cutting surface of the shears. Then, cut straight across the stem with the shears.[4]
Wrap the cuttings in a damp towel and put them in a plastic bag. Wet a paper towel or rag and wrap it around the cut ends of the stems. Place the cuttings and the towel in a plastic bag to help keep them moist.[5]
This is especially important if you need to wait to put your cuttings in soil for an hour or more.
If possible, take your cuttings in the morning. The ivy plant will have a lot of moisture in it at that time, which can help to keep the cuttings moist.
Choose pots that are big enough to insert all of the cuttings into. If you are doing 6 cuttings or less, a standard pot will work well. If you are doing more than 6 cuttings, choose a bigger pot or several pots.
You can put cuttings in any type of pot, including terra cotta, plastic, and ceramic. However, no matter which you choose, the pots need to have drainage holes in the bottom.[6]
Putting several cuttings in one pot will cut down on the space required for the cuttings and it will also mean fewer pots to water. Since the plants will need to be repotted once they have rooted, they will be perfectly fine together in one pot for this period.
Fill the pots with soil and water them. Pick a general potting soil or a soil made specifically for propagation, which usually has a high percentage of perlite or sand. Fill each pot with soil until it is below the edge of the pot. Then, place the pot over a sink or set it outside, and fill the pot with water until it runs out of the bottom.[7]
Leaving the soil below the edge of the pot will allow you to water the cuttings without the water overflowing.
Put holes in the soil apart around the edge of the pot. Use the eraser end of a pencil to make the holes deep. This will allow you to put the cuttings into the soil without moving the rooting powder off the end of the cutting.[8]
Make as many holes as you have cuttings.
You can also use a skewer, dowel, or another small pointed object to make the holes.
Trim off the ends of the cuttings again. Then, prune away any leaves that are within of the end of the cutting. This will give you a clean and fresh end to insert into the soil.[9]
This is especially important if your cuttings were gathered longer than an hour or so ago, as the end of the cuttings is more likely to be dried out.
Use clean shears or a knife to make these additional cuts.
Dip the cut end of each cutting in rooting hormone. Open the container of rooting hormone and pick up your cutting. Dip the bottom of the cut end into the hormone. Lift it out to just above the surface of the hormone and tap it lightly to knock off any excess hormone.[10]
You can buy rooting hormone in powder or liquid form. It is available at most garden stores and from online retailers.
Place a cutting in each hole in the soil and secure it in place. Insert each cutting into an individual hole. Place the end with the rooting hormone into a hole until it hits the bottom. Hold the cutting upright with one hand and then press the soil around it so that it stays securely in place.
As you are inserting the cutting, try to keep it centered in the hole so that very little of the rooting hormone is knocked off. However, losing a little of it on the top edge of the hole is fine.[11]
Water the pot again until water runs out the bottom. Put the pot under a faucet or use a watering can to soak the soil. Keep watering in a light stream until water comes out of the bottom of the pot, which will signal that all of the soil is thoroughly moistened.
Be careful not to disturb the cuttings too much as you water. Keep the stream of water away from the base of the cuttings so that they stay securely in the soil.
Cut the stem just below the lowest root node. The nodes look like bumps on the stem where new stems and leaves grow out from. Use a clean knife or pair of sharp scissors and make the cut straight across the stem. Cut about below the node.[12]
If there are any leaves beside the bottom node, pinch or cut them off.[13]
Place the cutting in a clean cup with room-temperature water. Ensure that the water covers the bottom node on the stem and that there are not any leaves below the surface of the water. Pour out a little water if it's covering a stem.[14]
Change the water once every 3 to 5 days and rinse the roots. Dump out the old water and replace it with new room-temperature water once every 3 to 5 days. When you do this, rinse off the roots with room-temperature water. You can also gently rub the roots with your fingers while you rinse them to remove any film that has gathered on the roots.[15]
Transfer the cuttings to soil once the roots are in length. Observe the roots as they grow and move your cutting to a pot filled with soil after the roots are about long. Check the length of the roots buy pulling the ivy stem out of the water and holding a ruler next to the roots. Measure from the bottom node to the end of the roots.[16]
Place the pots or cups in a bright, warm location either inside or outside. The pots or cups need to be out of direct sunlight but they can't be cold or light deprived. If the pots are inside, put them in a spot that is near a window that gets bright light but that will not shine directly on the cuttings. If you are keeping them outside, put them in a greenhouse, a propagator, or cover the pots with plastic bags and put them in a warm, bright spot out of direct sunlight.[17]
You will need to check on the moisture level of potted cuttings often, so put the cuttings somewhere you can easily access.
Keep the soil in potted cuttings damp at all times. Sprinkle the soil with water whenever the surface starts to dry out. The amount of time the soil takes to dry out will depend on the warmth and humidity where the plants are located.[18]
In many cases, a mister works well to keep outdoor cuttings wet while direct watering works well for indoor pots.
However, be careful not to drown the cuttings in too much water either. For example, don't leave the pot sitting in water.
Remove any discolored or dead cuttings in the soil or water. In most cases, some of your cuttings won't survive. If you see a cutting that has turned yellow, wilted, or has fallen over, remove it from the pot. Taking dead and diseased cuttings out of the pot or cup will help the other cuttings to thrive.[19]
When in doubt about whether a cutting is dead or dying, err on the side of caution and remove it. It's best to have fewer healthy plants than to have lots of diseased ones.
Repot cuttings when they have new growth or wait until the spring. Climbers like ivy usually root in 1-2 months with proper care. Once you're ready to repot them, pot them as you would any new plant, being careful with the roots and giving them rich soil to thrive in.[20]
If planting outdoors, you can put your young ivy plants in the ground or in a pot. However, keep in mind that a potted plant will need to be watered more often because it will dry out quicker.
Allow the new plants establish themselves for at least a few months before repotting them.
Maybe you're a new parent overwhelmed by keeping the house in order. Or maybe you're a student struggling with a tough homework assignment. Everyone has been in a situation where they could use some help. Unfortunately, it can feel tough to ask for help. Maybe you feel embarrassed or scared that you'll be turned down. Don't worry! Once you figure out what you need, you can make a polite and organized request. Chances are someone will be happy to give you the help you need!
Make a list of what you need. It's normal to feel overwhelmed in general and just want some help. However, you'll be better prepared to ask for help if you can clearly articulate your needs. For example, maybe you've recently had surgery and need a lot of help just getting things done. Your list might look like this:[1]
Go to the grocery store
Take the kids to dentist appointments
Walk the dog
Help with depression
Rate the importance of each need. Assign a number from 1-10 to each need. A 10 means that this task is essential, a 1 means that it is not that important. This will help you figure out your most pressing needs. You can start with getting help for those, and then work your way down the list. For example, it's normal to struggle with depression after a surgery. That would be rated a 10, since it can impact your ability to take care of other needs.
Write down a list of people who could help you. While it might seem daunting to ask for help, remember that there are likely plenty of people in your life who will be more than happy to help you. Start with family and close friends and then think about other parts of your network. Your list might include:[2]
Your partner
Your siblings
Your children
Your best friend
Your neighbors
Match each person with one specific need. Now it is time to compare your lists. Choose which person to ask for help with each task. Maybe your sister is a therapist. Ask her for some ideas about how to cope with depression. If your kids are old enough, they can walk the dog. Ask your partner to take a break from work to make sure the kids get to the dentist. Ask your neighbor if they would mind picking up a few things at the grocery store the next time they make a run. Choose people based on their abilities and their relationship to you.[3]
This is called delegating tasks. Delegating tasks to people you trust can help you reduce stress, especially in times when you need extra help.
Recognize that it is healthy and smart to ask for help. It is important to remember that it is not weak to ask for help. In fact, it shows that you are strong enough to voice your own needs. You won't be able to do much good for others if you don't ask for the help you need. It's also smart to ask for help. If you don't, you might find your situation worsening instead of getting better.[4]
Choose the right time. Don't ask someone for help when they are obviously busy or distracted. For example, don't ask your professor for help with homework right as they are trying to start class. Similarly, don't ask your boss for advice as they are rushing out the door.[5]
If you're not sure whether or not it is a good time, just ask. You can say, "I've love to ask for your help with something. Is there a time that's good for you to talk?"
Speak up. In most cases, if you don't ask for help you won't receive it. Sometimes people might be hesitant to step up and offer help. If you need something, speak up and ask.[6]
Maybe you're traveling alone in a new city. If you're lost, ask for directions. Stop into a nearby store, or ask the bus driver which stop you need.
You may feel vulnerable speaking up for help, but a certain degree of vulnerability can help you find the help you need. Don't feel weak, insecure, or embarrassed by asking for help.
Be specific. People aren't mind readers. Instead of just saying, "I need help," clearly state precisely what it is that you need. For example, instead of saying to your teacher, "I'm confused. Can you help me?", say, "I don't understand how to solve the equation for X. Can you please show me a sample problem?"[7]
Instead of saying to your partner, "I need you to help more around the house," you may say, "Could you please take the trash out and also do a load of laundry, please?"
Frame the request in a positive way. Sometimes it's tempting to whine a little bit. This could be a defense mechanism if you feel uncomfortable asking for help. It will help if you ask in a positive way instead.[8]
Don't tell your co-worker, "I'm so swamped! Could you cover for me at the meeting this afternoon?" That might imply that you're busy, but you don't think your co-worker is. Instead, say, "I know we're both busy, but you seem to be handling the stress better than me. Do you have time to take my place at the meeting this afternoon so that I can get caught up?"
Don't be self-deprecating. No one wants to hear you put yourself down. Try not to talk negatively about yourself when asking for help. Instead, act confident. You'll be more likely to receive the help you need.
Try not to say things like, "I'm so stupid. I'll never get Algebra. Can you help me again?" Instead, say, "This is complicated, but I know I can do it. Would you mind showing me another sample problem?"
Be persistent. Sometimes the help you receive might not turn out the way you expected. That can be frustrating. However, it is important not to give up. Keep trying to get help and make it work for you.[9]
Maybe you just had your first mentoring session with your boss. You might feel like you didn't receive the sort of helpful advice that you were hoping for. Instead of canceling your next meeting, try again. Prepare a list of specific questions that you have for them.
If you asked someone for help and they didn't come through, don't be afraid to ask someone else. Sometimes, you may need to reach out to a few people before getting assistance.
Gain credibility by helping others. People will be more likely to agree to help you if you have been known to help others. Build a reputation as a helpful person. If you see a co-worker who has too much on their plate, offer your assistance. They'll likely return the favor when you find yourself frazzled.[10]
If your friend is sick, offer to drop off some food for them. You'll likely receive the same kind treatment when you find yourself in a bind.
Acknowledge the help you received. Even though you might feel embarrassed that you needed help, don't pretend like it never happened. Directly acknowledge that you appreciate what the other person did for you. Try to make this acknowledgment shortly after receiving help.[11]
If your professor stayed after class to go over your paper with you, say, "Thanks for staying. I appreciate your time."
Maybe your teen did some extra chores around the house when you were working late. Say, "That was really helpful of you to get dinner started."
Be sincere. When someone is helping you, it's okay to be a little bit vulnerable. The other person might appreciate knowing that they are genuinely helping you. For example, you could say, "Wow, thanks for watching the kids this evening. We really needed a date night!" Showing that your need was genuine is a good way to be sincere.
Explain how they helped you. Be specific when you thank someone. Let them know exactly what they did for you. You could say to your therapist, "Thanks for this session. I think you've given me some good tools to start overcoming my anxiety."[12]
You could tell your partner, "Thanks for making dinner tonight. It meant a lot to me to be able to just put my feet up after a long day at work."
Mounting your LCD TV to your wall may seem challenging, but with the right tools, it's a breeze. First, choose where you want to mount the TV and locate wall studs or install toggle snap anchors that you can use to support it. Then, install the mounting bracket to your wall and attach the mounting plate to the back of your TV. After that, connect the plate to the bracket on the wall, and kick back and enjoy your newly mounted TV!
Choose a wall where you want to place your TV. Pick a wall that allows the whole room to see the TV and will provide the best picture quality and won't be affected by sunlight coming in from windows. You also need to consider the position of the furniture in the room and what direction they face.[1]
Because you need to screw holes into the wall to mount your LCD TV, be sure of your placement before you begin mounting it!
In a living room, the center of the wall across from the main entranceway allows for a wider viewing angle.
Position your TV so it's at eye level. Place your TV on the wall where it's most likely to be at eye level when you're viewing it. If you plan to mostly watch it while sitting on the sofa you'll want to place it lower than you would if you plan to mostly watch it while standing or at a bar. Use a ruler or tape measure to measure from the floor to the best height to put the TV at eye level and lightly mark the height with a pencil.[2]
Placing your TV with the center at off the ground will put the screen at eye level with the average adult sitting down.
If you plan to view the TV more often while standing, then mount it with the center of the TV from the ground.
Mount the TV as close to eye level as possible if there's an obstruction such as an existing appliance or piece of furniture.
Select a location that allows you to conceal wires and devices. The cables and wires of your TV and any devices you plan to connect to it can be unsightly. When you're picking a place to mount your TV, think about how difficult it will be for you to conceal them to help inform your decision.[3]
Centering the TV on a bare wall in the center of the room may make it difficult for you to hide the wires.
Use furniture placement to help conceal the wires.
Move any furniture, pictures, or decor from the area. You need to have a clear area to work in when you're mounting your LCD TV. Slide over any chairs, tables, or sofas so you can access the wall easily. Take down any paintings, pictures, or decor so they're out of your way.[4]
Gently place the items that were hanging on the wall nearby so you don't crack or break them.
Take down anything hanging on the wall so they can't wobble, shake, or potentially fall when you're drilling into the wall.
Line up the mounting bracket and mark where you plan to drill. Hold up the mount against the wall where you want to place the TV and use a level to make sure it's straight. Then, take a pencil and lightly mark where you need to drill holes to mount the bracket to the wall.[5]
Make a pencil mark on the wall through the screw holes on the mounting bracket.
Set the bracket aside until you're ready to mount it.
Find wall studs in the area with a stud finder. Look for studs in the area you plan to mount your LCD TV so you can install the framework into them. Take a stud finder and run the tool across the wall at the height you plan to mount the TV to locate studs you can use.[6]
Use a pencil to lightly mark the location of a stud on the wall.
You can purchase stud finders at hardware stores, department stores, and online.
Use a masonry bit to drill pilot holes into the marked areas. Fit a masonry bit into the end of your power drill. Drill pilot holes into the wall where you marked the locations of the screw holes with your pencil.[7]
The pilot holes will make it easier for you to install the screws that will support the mounting bracket.
Make sure you drill into a wall stud so the brackets are supported.
Insert toggle snap anchors if there aren't any studs. Toggle snap anchors are plastic devices you can insert into your wall that will help support your TV if there aren't any studs. Use a drill bit to drill holes into the wall where you need to install the snap anchors to mount the bracket. Push the snap anchors into the holes so they're secure.[8]
Make sure all of the toggle snap anchor is fully inserted into the wall.
Line up the mounting bracket up with the pilot holes or toggle snap anchors. After you drill all of the pilot holes or install the toggle snap anchors, replace the bit with a screwdriver bit that fits the mounting screws. Hold up the mounting bracket to the wall and line up the screw holes with the pilot holes or toggle snap anchors.[9]
Hold the bracket so it's flush against the wall.
Drill the mounting screws into the pilot holes or toggle snap anchors. Apply pressure against the bracket to hold it flush against the wall. Then, drill the mounting screws through the screw holes of the bracket and into the pilot holes that you drilled or the toggle snap anchors that you installed.[10]
Drill the screws all the way into the stud or anchor so they secure the bracket.
Wiggle the bracket to make sure it's secure and tighten the screws if there's any movement.
Locate the mounting plate attachment holes on the back of your TV. On the back of your LCD TV are holes that correspond to the screw holes on the mounting plate. If there are already screws in the holes, remove them so you can attach the plate.[11]
They may also be covered in plastic if you just bought your TV.
Attach the mounting plate to your TV. Fit the screws through the screw holes of the mounting plate and into the corresponding holes on the TV. After you slide the screws through the slots, attach the nuts to the screws and tighten them so the mounting plate is flush against the back of the TV.[12]
The mounting plate will support the TV on the bracket, so make sure the nuts are tight on the screws!
Give the mounting plate a good shake to make sure there isn't any movement. If there is, tighten up the nuts on the screws.
Line up the mounting plate with the bracket on the wall. Pick up the TV and hold it up to the mounting bracket on the wall. Align the mounting plate on the back of the TV with the slot that the plate will fit into on the bracket.[13]
Use another person to help you hold the TV up against the wall.
Connect the mounting plate to the bracket. Depending on the mounting plate and bracket that you have, you may need to slide the plate into a slot on the bracket. You may also need to screw the mounting plate to the bracket. Check the manufacturer's instructions to make sure you're connecting the plate to the bracket correctly.[14]
Conceal the cables with a cord cover. A cord cover is a plastic track that mounts directly to the wall on top of the wires to hide them. Use screws to mount the base to the wall beneath your TV and lay the cords inside of them. Then, snap the plastic cover in place on top of it.[15]
Choose a cord cover color that blends into your wall so it's less noticeable.
You can remove the top of the cover at any time if you need to adjust or add additional wires.
