State media KCNA reported that a 'significant' test was carried out on Sunday, local time, at its Sohae satellite launch site, but did not specify what was tested at the site previously used to launch rockets into space.
* The test was carried out at North Korea's Sohae satellite launch site * State media KCNA did not specify what was tested, but said the results would 'be used for upgrading the country's strategic status' * Missile experts said the operation was likely a static test of a rocket engine * It comes after talks between U.S. and North Korea stalled, with the country's UN ambassador saying that denuclearization talks were off 'the table'
North Korea has carried out a 'very significant' test at its Sohae satellite launch site hours after it announced denuclearization talks with the U.S. were off the negotiating table.
State media KCNA reported that the test was carried out on Sunday, local time, but did not specify what was tested at the site previously used to launch rockets into space.
However, local media reports say a new satellite image indicated North Korea may be preparing to resume testing engines used to power satellite launchers at the site.
Analysts have said the site has never before been used to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile, but it has been used to test missile engines. Past satellite launches have helped scuttle talks with the United States.
North Korea does not need "lengthy talks" with the US and denuclearization is "already gone out of the negotiating table," Pyongyang's UN envoy said. "We'll see," responded US President Donald Trump.
The talks between Pyongyang and Washington are merely a "time-saving trick" for the US administration to advance its "domestic political agenda," the North Korean ambassador to the UN said on Friday, apparently referencing the 2020 election campaign.
"We do not need to have lengthy talks with the US now and denuclearization is already gone out of the negotiating table," ambassador Kim Song said.
Song also slammed the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Belgium and Estonia in his statement, after those countries condemned Pyongyang's repeated ballistic tests.
LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party is on course to win a parliamentary majority of 38 seats in Thursday's election, according to a new poll, the Sunday Times' political editor reported.
A Datapraxis poll, using the multilevel regression and post-stratification (MRP) model, predicted that the Conservatives would win 344 seats, with the opposition Labour Party taking 221, the Times's Tim Shipman said on Twitter.
Update #2: My U.K. election prediction. My gut tells me that everyone has already made up their minds on who they re going to vote for. The Tories are going to win with a comfortable majority, and Brexit will be a "fait-accompli" at the beginning of the new year.

Iran and the US have conducted a prisoner exchange that saw a detained Princeton scholar released for an Iranian scientist held by America, marking a rare diplomatic breakthrough between Tehran and Washington after months of tensions.
In a trade conducted in Zurich, Switzerland, Iranian officials handed over Chinese-American graduate student Xiyue Wang, detained in Tehran since 2016, for scientist Massoud Soleimani, who had faced a federal trial in Georgia.
While the exchange represents a rare win for both countries, it comes as Iran still faces crushing US sanctions and the aftermath of nationwide protests that reportedly saw over 200 people killed.
* Saudi military student Mohammed Saeed al-Shamrani, 21, killed three people and injured 12 when he opened fire at Navy Station Pensacola on Friday * Another Saudi student allegedly videotaped the attack, while two others watched from a nearby car * Authorities have now detained 10 Saudi students for questioning, a number revised up from six yesterday evening * However, the FBI is still searching for 'several' other Saudis students who have not been seen since the attack * al-Shamrani hosted a dinner party on Thursday evening with three other Saudi students where they watched videos of mass shootings * He and fellow Saudi students also traveled to NYC in the days before the attack * Investigators are now trying to work out their motives for the trip to the city
The FBI is reportedly hunting for several Saudi students from Navy Station Pensacola, after they vanished in the wake of Friday's mass shooting at the base.
Fellow Saudi Mohammed Saeed al-Shamrani, 21, killed three and wounded 12 others in the attack before he was shot dead by police.
According to AP, investigators have now detained 10 Saudi military students from the base - a number revised up from six - but several others remain unaccounted for.
Authorities have not revealed the number of Saudi students they are still looking for, and it's unclear why they have not come forward to police.
It follows chilling new details emerging in the wake of Friday morning's shooting, including news that three Saudi serviceman joined al-Shamrani for a dinner party the night before the attack where they watched videos of mass shootings.

FRANCE was in flames today due to violent anti-Macron protesters tearing through the streets of Nantes and Paris in the 56th consecutive week of riots.
Hongkongers returned to the streets Sunday for a mass march testing ongoing support for the increasingly violent antigovernment demonstrations that have seized the Chinese-ruled territory for six months.
Police gave the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) approval to hold the protest, the first time the organization has been granted an official green light for a march since August. Protesters aimed for huge crowds to signal to the Hong Kong government and its political masters in Beijing that the protracted movement has not lost steam.
Thousands assembled for a rally in Victoria Park before the march began, as overhead surveilling helicopters buzzed the high-traffic commercial area of Causeway Bay.
“I am exhausted internally and physically, but I will never say that I’m tired … and never give up,” says Eric, a 38-year-old who joined the march alongside his wife and their two and and five-year-old daughters. “In the next six months or the next six years we have to stick together until the government apologizes and takes responsibility for what they’ve done.”
Earlier in the day, police announced they had seized a semi-automatic pistol, five magazines and over 100 bullets they believe were intended for use during the march. Eleven people aged between 20 and 53 were arrested during three raids that also produced sabres, daggers, batons and pepper spray, local news broadcaster RTHK reported. Senior superintendent Li Kwai-wah said it was the first time in the half year of protests that a handgun was found.
The protests kicked off in June over a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be sent for trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in the Chinese mainland. It has since evolved into a broader challenge over Beijing’s hold on the city.
Seeking to preserve Hong Kong’s civil liberties and semiautonomy from perceived authoritarian encroachment, millions have taken to the streets. Their demands include greater democracy and an inquiry into the police’s use of force.
At the beginning of the movement in June, CHRF organized some of the biggest peaceful marches, estimating crowd sizes of first one and then two million at separate weekend protests.
Since then, police have banned many of the rallies, processions and public events, citing organizers’ inability to ensure the gatherings would not end in violent confrontations between protesters and police. With many of the events deemed “unlawful,” protesters have dwindled in number and become more violent.
Demonstrators have vandalized vehicles and shopfronts, and returned the police’s rubber bullets and tear gas with petrol bombs and bricks. Nearly 6,000 people have been arrested in the protests since June, three demonstrators have been shot by police and one protest detractor was set on fire.
As the unrest has morphed from weekend eruptions of street battles into weekday spontaneous lunchtime protests, Hong Kong’s reputation as one of Asia’s safest cities has eroded. For the first time since the global financial crisis a decade ago, the city tipped into a recession.
It remains unclear how long protests that have stretched into the winter will continue, and how far the central government will go to assert it grip on the enclave of 7.5 million people.
Sunday’s protest comes two weeks after pro-democracy politicians scored a landslide in local elections, a result that cast doubt on Beijing’s claims that a supposed “silent majority” opposes the demonstrations.
Despite protesters’ radical acts of civil disobedience, polls have shown widespread support for the movement’s demands. Sunday’s march was widely seen as another way to gauge the ongoing momentum.
Organizers billed the event as a “last chance” for the city’s embattled leader Carrie Lam to meet the protest demands.
“We have to keep fighting,” says Dave, a 45-year-old architect who joined the march. “An independent inquiry into the police is the most important demand. And [Chief Executive] Carrie Lam has to resign. She needs to go away.”
(MINSK, Belarus) — The leaders of Russia and Belarus spent more than five hours Saturday in sensitive talks on deepening ties between the two allies — a meeting that triggered a protest in the Belarusian capital among those who fear Russia’s intentions.
No immediate deal was announced after the talks in Sochi on Russia’s Black Sea coast between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, but a senior Russian official said they edged closer to an agreement.
More than 1,000 opposition demonstrators rallied in Minsk to protest closer integration with Russia, which they fear could erode the post-Soviet independence of Belarus, a nation of 10 million. The protesters marched across the Belarusian capital, chanting “No to integration!” and “Belarus to Europe!”
Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus with an iron fist for more than a quarter-century, relies on cheap Russian energy and loans to maintain his country’s Soviet-style economy.
Russia and Belarus signed a union agreement in 1997 that envisaged close political, economic and military ties, but stopped short of forming a single nation.
The Kremlin has recently cranked up the pressure on Belarus, raising energy prices and cutting subsidies. Russian officials say Minsk should accept closer economic integration if it wants to benefit from lower energy prices.
Speaking at the start of talks in Sochi, Lukashenko urged Putin to continue sending fuel shipments to Belarus at Russia’s domestic prices.
“We just want equal conditions — nothing else,” Lukashenko said with a wry smile as he faced Putin across the table.
“We shall talk about future prospects. It’s a landmark meeting,” Putin said. “I hope we will keep doing all we can to make our peoples and nations feel close and keep moving primarily in the economic sphere, but also in the social field, to benefit from that integration.”
Russian Economics Minister Maxim Oreshkin said the two sides narrowed their positions on oil, gas and other disputed issues and the leaders instructed officials to continue to iron out the remaining differences. Putin and Lukashenko are to meet again on Dec. 20 in St. Petersburg.
Some in Belarus fear the new agreements could pave the way for a full merger of the two countries, concerns fueled by Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.
There also has been speculation that Putin, who has been in power for nearly two decades, could contemplate a merger with Belarus as a way to stay at the helm of the new union state of Russia and Belarus after his current Russian presidential term expires in 2024.
“The Kremlin no longer wants to pay for rhetoric and is starting to demand political concessions from Minsk ahead of 2024, in a hint at the new state and the new job for Putin,” said Valery Karbalevich, an independent Minsk-based political analyst.
Putin has been coy about his future plans.
Lukashenko has bristled at the Russian pressure, charging that some Russian officials want to push Belarus into weakening its sovereignty. The Belarusian leader has vowed not to surrender Belarus’ post-Soviet independence but the opposition in Belarus has remained nervous.
“Politicians are playing with Belarusian sovereignty like in a card game, and we will keep protesting as long as a threat to our independence remains,” said Pavel Severinets, the organizer of Saturday’s rally.
The protest wasn’t sanctioned by the authorities, but police allowed the demonstrators to march across downtown Minsk.
“They are again trying to pull us back into that rotten empire that is trying to revive itself at the expense of neighbors,” said 19-year-old student Mikhail Olshansky, who covered his face with Belarus’ pre-Lukashenko red-and-white flag.
Lukashenko has shown little tolerance for dissent, earning him the nickname of Europe’s last dictator, but he has increasingly sought to reach out to the West as he faces pressure from Russia.
The U.S. and the European Union have repeatedly criticized Belarusian authorities for flawed elections and crackdowns on the opposition, but they have lifted some their sanctions in recent years as Belarus freed political prisoners.
“Minsk is playing a simple game, trying to win advantages for its Soviet-style economy by threatening to break the union with Russia and get closer to the West,” Karbalevich said. “That is the reason why repressions against the opposition were put on standby. Lukashenko doesn’t want to wake up one day as a provincial governor in Russia.”
(UNITED NATIONS) — North Korea said Saturday that denuclearization has “already gone out of the negotiation table” and it does not need to have lengthy talks with the United States now.
North Korea’s U.N. Ambassador Kim Song accused the Trump administration of persistently pursuing a “hostile policy” toward the country “in its attempt to stifle it” — and of using claims that it is engaged in a “sustained and substantial dialogue” with Pyongyang solely for “its domestic political agenda.”
Song’s statement was a response to Wednesday’s condemnation by six European countries of North Korea’s 13 ballistic missile launches since May. The North Korean envoy accused the Europeans of playing “the role of pet dog of the United States in recent months.”
His comments came as prospects dim for a resumption of nuclear diplomacy between the United States and North Korea.
(HONG KONG) — Only after finding safety in numbers, joining hundreds of other pro-government protesters in Hong Kong on Saturday, did Reddy Lin drum up the courage to slip into her red T-shirt marked, “China, I love you” and glue a heart-shaped Chinese-flag sticker on her face.
But for the train ride home, the teacher said she’d be taking all her pro-China garb off again. The risk of running into supporters from the rival camp, those who oppose China’s communist rulers, was simply too great, she said.
“It’s very dangerous. They’ll beat you,” she said. “They’re brutes.”
Lin and hundreds of other protesters waving red Chinese flags packed a Hong Kong park to vociferously denounce what they say is a reign of terror being imposed on the city by months of anti-government demonstrations. The protest highlighted the widening gulf between the pro- and anti-government camps in Hong Kong, with divisions that appear irreconcilable.
Compared to the hundreds of anti-government rallies that have gripped Hong Kong since June, the pro-China demonstration was like stepping through a looking glass. The Hong Kong police were praised as saviors, not bullies. China was presented as a country to love, not fear. Hong Kong was described as a city freer than most, instead of a place losing its liberties.
Chief among the demonstrators’ complaints was that they have grown scared of the black-clad, frequently violent hard core of the anti-government movement.
Calling them “rioters,” many said hard-line protesters are destroying Hong Kong’s freedoms, rather than protecting them, by resorting to violence.
In chants, the crowd called anti-government protesters “cockroaches.” Photos displayed at the rally showed the bloodied faces of people who have been attacked during protests. They have included people who’ve been deemed by mobs to be unsympathetic to the anti-government movement, including a man who was doused with inflammable liquid and set on fire last month.
“They destroy everything,” fumed Tata Tsg, a retiree at the rally who said she is now too scared to go out in the evenings. “Those bastards have freedom, I have no freedom.”
Tsg and two friends who joined her, sisters Angie and Winnie Choi, said it marked the first time that any of them, all in their fifties, had ever taken part in a protest. Angie Choi carried a poster marked: “Extreme rioters. Hong Kong suffers.”
Lin, the civics teacher who traveled from the neighboring Chinese city of Shenzhen for the protest in a small square amid Hong Kong tower blocks, collected hundreds of signatures for ‘Thank you’ letters she said she’ll mail to the territory’s much-maligned police force.
“They are working very hard,” she said. Lin said her 20-year-old son, who studies at a Hong Kong university, was too afraid to join her at the demonstration, scared that he might be recognized by classmates and “be beaten.”
The police force has become hated by many anti-government protesters, furious over riot officers’ liberal use of choking tear gas and thousands of often muscular arrests. A call for an independent probe of police behavior features among the anti-government movement’s main demands.
Hong Kong’s new police commissioner, Chris Tang, said Saturday in Beijing that he’ll adopt both “hard and soft approaches” for policing protests. He spoke after his first meetings with Chinese officials since his appointment last month.
Hurling gasoline bombs or stones are “violent actions we will not tolerate,” he said. “But for other incidents, such as protesters walking off-road or other minor incidents, we will take humanistic and flexible approaches.”
Those pledges will be tested by a rally Sunday of the anti-government movement that will offer a fresh gauge of its appeal and ability to continue mobilizing support.
At the pro-government rally, some demonstrators said they don’t feel great admiration for embattled Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam or her Communist Party bosses in Beijing but feel such great anger about protest violence that they had to turn out.
But leaving the rally, many demonstrators furled and put away their Chinese flags and peeled off red stickers they’d been wearing, for fear of running into opponents on their rides home.
“Who is more scary: the communists or the rioters?” said retiree Peter Pang. “I don’t like the government very much but I don’t like rioters even more.”
On Friday, Reddit said that its security team believes a collection of leaked United States-United Kingdom trade documents that had been posted on the site are a part of a coordinated information campaign to spread disunity linked to Russia.
“We were recently made aware of a post on Reddit that included leaked documents from the UK,” the statement said. “We investigated this account and the accounts connected to it, and today we believe this was part of a campaign that has been reported as originating from Russia.”
The site said it is banning one subreddit and 61 accounts for breaking Reddit’s policies against vote manipulation and misuse of the platform.
“Earlier this year Facebook discovered a Russian campaign on its platform, which was further analyzed by the Atlantic Council and dubbed ‘Secondary Infektion,'” Reddit’s announcement said. “Suspect accounts on Reddit were recently reported to us, along with indicators from law enforcement, and we were able to confirm that they did indeed show a pattern of coordination.”
In its analysis, the nonpartisan think tank the Atlantic Council describedSecondary Infektion as using fake accounts, doctored documents, and various online platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Medium to spread stories “that attack Western interests and unity.” The Council said the campaign is large and sophisticated, and thus likely run by an intelligence operation.
Reddit said it then used those accounts to identify others that they suspected were part of the Russian campaign. The accounts post in multiple languages in and subreddits for multiple regions.
“In late October, an account u/gregoratior posted the leaked documents and later reposted by an additional account u/ostermaxnn. Additionally, we were able to find a pocket of accounts participating in vote manipulation on the original post. All of these accounts have the same shared pattern as the original Secondary Infektion group detected, causing us to believe that this was indeed tied to the original group,” Reddit’s announcement continued.
The leaked trade documents have been a hostly debated topic in the upcoming British general election, as the management of the National Health Service has become of the most crucial issues for voters. Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has argued the documents show the Conservative Party planning the privatization of the National Health Service and has said the release of the documents was in the public interest, according to the BBC. They came up a recent televised BBC debate, when Corbyn argued that Johnson wants to make a deal with the United States that would raise drug prices.
Besides the Reddit post with the leaked documents, none of the other posts had made much of a stir on the site, and many of the other posts were removed either by moderators or by other content moderation, per Reddit’s statement.
Reddit announced it will ban one subreddit and 61 accounts, and added, “[as] we have done with previous influence operations, we will also preserve these accounts for a time, so that researchers and the public can scrutinize them to see for themselves how these accounts operated.”
It’s been widely reported that U.S. intelligence community believes Russia has been operating misinformation campaigns around the world for years, most famously spreading false information, conspiracy theories, and hacked Democratic documents to hurt Democratic Nominee Hilary Clinton during the 2016 U.S. general election.
(PARIS) — Paris police skirmished Saturday with yellow vest activists joining a wave of protest actions against the government’s overhaul of France’s national retirement system, as highway blockades and train stoppages disrupted weekend travel around the country.
A few thousand yellow vest protesters marched from the Finance Ministry complex on the Seine River through southeast Paris, pushing their year-old demands for economic justice — and adding the retirement reform to their list of grievances. Most marchers were peaceful but some threw projectiles or pushed riot officers, prompting repeated bursts of tear gas from police.
The marchers appear to be emboldened by the biggest national demonstrations in years Thursday that kicked off a mass strike-and-protest movement against President Emmanuel Macron’s redesign of the pension system.
As the strikes entered a third day Saturday, tourists and shoppers faced shuttered subway lines around Paris and near-empty train stations.
Transportation workers are central to the strike, but other groups are joining the fray, too.
Truckers striking over a fuel tax hike disrupted traffic on highways from Provence in the southeast to Normandy in the northwest. A similar fuel tax is what unleashed the yellow vest movement a year ago, and this convergence of grievances could pose a major new threat to Macron’s presidency.
The travel chaos is not deterring the government so far, though. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe plainly told the French in a nationwide address Friday: “You’re going to have to work longer.”
He will present details of the plan next week. The government says it won’t raise the official retirement age of 62 but the plan is expected to including financial conditions to encourage people to work longer. Philippe did offer one olive branch, saying the changes would be progressive so that they don’t become “brutal.”
Macron says the reform, which will streamline a convoluted system of 42 special pension plans, will make the system more fair and financially sustainable.
Unions, however, see the plan as a threat to hard-fought workers’ rights, and are digging in for what they hope is a protracted strike. They also plan new nationwide retirement protests Tuesday, despite the tear gas and rioting that marred the edges of the Paris march Thursday.
Emmanuel Buquet, an unemployed 51-year-old from Rouen, said the mass protests gave a new impetus to the waning movement.
“Yellow vests are back out in the streets,” he told the AP. “It’s getting worse and worse, we’ve obtained nothing since last year, just crumbs. The reforms are getting stronger and stronger.”
In a society accustomed to strikes and workers rights, many people have supported the labor action, though that sentiment is likely to fade if the transport shutdown continues through next week.
“I knew it was going to last … but I did not expect it to be that chaotic,” Ley Basaki, who lives in the Paris suburb of Villemomble and struggles to get to and from work in the capital, told The Associated Press on Saturday at the Gare de l’Est train station. “There is absolutely nothing here, nothing, nothing. There is no bus, nothing.”
Many travelers are using technology and social networks to find ways around the strike — working from home, using ride-sharing apps and riding shared bikes or electric scooters.
But some are using technology to support the strike: A group of activist gamers is raising money via a marathon session on game-streaming site Twitch. Their manifesto says: “In the face of powers-that-be who are hardening their line and economic insecurity that is intensifying in all layers of the population,” they are trying to “occupy other spaces for mobilization and invent other ways of joining the movement.”
(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump said Friday in a tweet that he will hold off on designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
Trump said all the work had been completed and he was statutorily ready to issue a declaration but had decided to delay at the request of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The Mexican government had pushed back against Trump’s plan, saying such a step by the U.S. could lead to violations of its sovereignty.
“All necessary work has been completed to declare Mexican Cartels terrorist organizations,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Statutorily we are ready to do so.”
“However, at the request of a man who I like and respect, and has worked so well with us, President Andres Manuel @LopezObrador— we will temporarily hold off on this designation.”
Mexico’s president thanked Trump for his decision to “temporarily hold off” on designation Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
In a speech after Trump’s tweet, López Obrador said, “I thank Trump for having put off the decision … and having chosen understanding and cooperation.”
Under pressure from Trump’s threat to impose tariffs, Mexico has pressed thousands of national guard troops into service to help block Central American migrants from traveling through Mexico to reach the U.S.
In place of designating the cartels as terrorist outfits, Trump said the U.S. and Mexico instead will “step up our joint efforts to deal decisively with these vicious and every-growing organizations.”
Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard wrote that López Obrador also “respects and appreciates” Trump. “Cooperation won, and there will be good results,” Ebrard tweeted.
It was unclear if Mexico had promised Trump anything in return for suspending the designation, which could have caused Mexico headaches. Such a designation might require Mexico to periodically gain U.S. certification that it was cooperating in fighting the cartels, and could potentially have affected Mexico’s access to international lending agencies.
The issue came to the fore after the Nov. 4 slaughter of nine U.S.-Mexico dual nationals in the northern border state of Sonora by drug cartel gunmen.
Trump said in a radio interview just last week that he “absolutely” would move ahead with designating the drug cartels as terrorist organizations, attributing American deaths to drug trafficking and other activity by the cartels.
“I’ve been working on that for the last 90 days,” Trump said in the interview when host Bill O’Reilly asked whether such a designation would be forthcoming.
O’Reilly had asked if Trump would designate the cartels “and start hitting them with drones and things like that?”
Trump replied: “I don’t want to say what I’m going to do, but they will be designated.”
(TEHRAN, Iran) — Iran and the U.S. conducted a prisoner exchange Saturday that saw a detained Princeton scholar released for an Iranian scientist held by America, marking a rare diplomatic breakthrough between Tehran and Washington after months of tensions.
In a trade conducted in Zurich, Switzerland, Iranian officials handed over Chinese-American graduate student Xiyue Wang, detained in Tehran since 2016, for scientist Massoud Soleimani, who had faced a federal trial in Georgia.
While the exchange represents a rare win for both countries, it comes as Iran still faces crushing American sanctions and the aftermath of nationwide protests that reportedly saw over 200 people killed. Meanwhile, Western detainees from the U.S. and elsewhere remain held by Tehran. They are likely to be used as bargaining chips for future negotiations amid Iran’s unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.
Wang’s release had been rumored over recent days, with one lawyer involved in his case tweeting out a Bible verse about an angel freeing the apostle Peter just hours before Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif broke the news in his own tweet.
“Glad that Professor Massoud Soleimani and Mr. Xiyue Wang will be joining their families shortly,” Zarif wrote. “Many thanks to all engaged, particularly the Swiss government.”
President Donald Trump shortly after acknowledged Wang was free in a statement from the White House, saying the Princeton scholar would be “returning to the United States.”
“Mr. Wang had been held under the pretense of espionage since August 2016,” Trump said. “We thank our Swiss partners for their assistance in negotiating Mr. Wang’s release with Iran.”
The Swiss Embassy in Tehran looks out for America’s interests in the country as the U.S. Embassy there has been closed since the 1979 student takeover and 444-day hostage crisis.
Brian Hook, the U.S. special representative for Iran, accompanied the Iranian scientist Soleimani to Switzerland to make the exchange and will return with Wang, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity as the information had yet to be released. Hook and Wang were en route to Landstuhl hospital at Ramstein Air Base in Germany where Wang will be examined by doctors, the official said. Hook is expected to return to the U.S. from Germany alone, as Wang is expected to be evaluated for several days.
Although Hook was present for the swap, the official said Trump’s national security adviser Robert O’Brien played the lead role in the negotiations dating from his time as the special representative for hostage affairs at the State Department.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency later reported that Soleimani was with Iranian officials in Switzerland. Soleimani was expected to return to Iran in the coming hours. Zarif later posted pictures of himself on Twitter with Soleimani in front of an Iranian government jet and later with the two talking on board.
Wang was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran for allegedly “infiltrating” the country and sending confidential material abroad. His family and Princeton University strongly denied the claims. Wang was arrested while conducting research on the Qajar dynasty that once ruled Iran for his doctorate in late 19th and early 20th century Eurasian history, according to Princeton.
Hua Qu, the wife of Xiyue Wang, released a statement saying “our family is complete once again.”
“Our son Shaofan and I have waited three long years for this day and it’s hard to express in words how excited we are to be reunited with Xiyue,” she said. “We are thankful to everyone who helped make this happen.”
Princeton University spokesman Ben Chang said the school was aware of Wang’s release.
“We are working with the family and government officials to facilitate his return to the United States,” Chang said.
Iran’s Revolutionary Court tried Wang. That court typically handles espionage cases and others involving smuggling, blasphemy and attempts to overthrow its Islamic government. Westerners and Iranian dual nationals with ties to the West often find themselves tried and convicted in closed-door trials in these courts, only later to be used as bargaining chips in negotiations.
Soleimani — who works in stem cell research, hematology and regenerative medicine — was arrested by U.S. authorities on charges he had violated trade sanctions by trying to have biological material brought to Iran. He and his lawyers maintain his innocence, saying he seized on a former student’s plans to travel from the U.S. to Iran in September 2016 as a chance to get recombinant proteins used in his research for a fraction of the price he’d pay at home.
Tensions have been high between Iran and the U.S. since President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in May 2018. In the time since, the U.S. has imposed harsh sanctions on Iran’s economy. There also have been a series of attacks across the Mideast that the U.S. blames on Iran.
Zarif in September said in an interview with NPR that he had pushed for an exchange of Wang for Soleimani.
“I have offered to exchange them, because as foreign minister I cannot go to our court and simply tell them, ‘Release this man,’” Zarif said then. “I can go to the court and tell them, ‘I can exchange this man for an Iranian,’ and then … have a legal standing in the court.”
However, it remains unclear whether this exchange will have a wider effect on Iranian-U.S. relations. Iran has accused the U.S. without evidence of being behind the mid-November protests over gasoline prices. Meanwhile, the U.S. has said it seized Iranian missiles bound for Yemen, where Tehran backs rebel forces there that have been fighting a yearslong war with Saudi Arabia. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out direct talks between the nations.
In June, Iran released Nizar Zakka, a U.S. permanent resident from Lebanon who advocated for internet freedom and has done work for the U.S. government. The U.S. deported Iranian Negar Ghodskani in September, who had been brought from Australia and later sentenced to time served for conspiracy to illegally export restricted technology from the U.S. to Iran.
Other Americans held in Iran include the octogenarian businessman Baquer Namazi who has been held for over two years and diagnosed with epilepsy.
Both Baquer Namazi and his son Siamak Namazi, also a dual national who has been held for over three years, are serving a 10-year sentence after they were convicted of collaborating with a hostile power.
An Iranian-American art dealer Karan Vafadari and his Iranian wife, Afarin Neyssari, received 27-year and 16-year prison sentences, respectively. Also held is U.S. Navy veteran Michael White, who is serving a 10-year sentence.
Former FBI agent Robert Levinson, who vanished in Iran in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission, remains missing as well. Iran says that Levinson is not in the country and that it has no further information about him, but his family holds Tehran responsible for his disappearance.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, while saying Wang would soon be able to go home to his family, acknowledged other Americans remain held by Iran.

The use of algorithms in electronic markets has automated the jobs of tens of thousands of execution traders worldwide, and it's also displaced people who model prices and risk or build investment portfolios, he said."Financial machine learning creates a number of challenges for the 6.14 million people employed in the finance and insurance industry, many of whom will lose their jobs -- not necessarily because they are replaced by machines, but because they are not trained to work alongside algorithms," Lopez de Prado told the US House Committee on Financial Services.During the almost two-hour hearing, lawmakers asked experts about racial and gender bias in AI, competition for highly skilled technology workers, and the challenges of regulating increasingly complex, data-driven financial markets.Other comments from the hearing:Kirsten Wegner, chief executive officer, Modern Markets Initiative:"As bad actors become more sophisticated, it is vital that financial regulators have the funding resources, technological capacity and access to AI and automated technologies to be a strong and effective cop on the beat."Martina Rejsjö, head of Nasdaq Surveillance North America Equities, Nasdaq Inc.:Nasdaq runs more than 40 different algorithms, using about 35,000 parameters, to look for market abuse and manipulation in real time."The massive and, in many cases, exponential growth in market data is a significant challenge for surveillance professionals," she said. "Market abuse attempts have become more sophisticated, putting more pressure on surveillance teams to find the proverbial needle in the data haystack."Rebecca Fender, senior director, CFA Institute:Forty-three percent of CFA members and candidates expect their roles to change significantly in the next five to ten years, according to a survey of more than 3,800 respondents. The three roles most likely to disappear are sales agents, traders and performance analysts.Charlton McIlwain, professor of media, culture and communication at New York University:"Racial groups that are already extremely underrepresented in the financial services industry will be most at risk in terms of automation and the escalation of fintech development. This is especially true given the vast underrepresentation of African-Americans and Latinx in the adjacent technology sector workforce."
NEW DELHI: Telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have removed cap from free outgoing calls on other networks under new plans for pre-paid customers that came into effect from December 3.Both the companies had earlier capped outgoing calls to network of other telecom operators at 1,000 minutes in plan with 28-days validity, 3,000 minutes in 84-days validity and 12,000 in 365 days validity plan. Beyond this limit, customers were required to pay 6 paisa per minute for outgoing calls made to other network."We heard you! And we are making the change. From tomorrow, enjoy unlimited calling to any network in India with all our unlimited plans. No conditions apply," Bharti Airtel said in a tweet.Vodafone Idea too made similar announcement on twitter."Here's to unlimited possibilities with free unlimited calling, even to other networks," Vodafone Idea tweeted with note that the changes are effective from December 6 onward -- the day Reliance Jio raised the price of it mobile calling and internet plans by about 40 per cent. The Mukesh Ambani-led firm announced some plans that were 15-25 per cent cheaper than that of the competitors. However, it has made no change in free call limit to other networks till Saturday evening.Airtel and Vodafone Idea on December 1 announced new plans under which call and data charges became dearer for its pre-paid customers by up to 50 per cent from December 3.Both the companies announced new plans in "unlimited"category with 2 days, 28 days, 84 days, 365 days validity, which on the back of the envelope calculations show higher price of up to 50 per cent.Bharti Airtel increased its entry level unlimited plan with a year long validity by about 50 per cent to Rs 1,499 from with 24 GB of data in place of Rs 998 plan with 12 GB data usage limit. The price 365 days valid plan in the same category with daily data usage limit of 1.5 GB per day now costs 41.2 per cent more at Rs 2,398 compared to Rs 1,699 plan.Vodafone Idea plans were priced about Re 1 higher compared to that of Airtel. The company also announced three new plans - Rs 219 with 28 days validity offering 1 GB per day, Rs 399 and Rs 449 plan with 56 days validity each, offering 1.5 Gb and 2 GB data usage, respectively. With removal of the limit, Airtel's new Rs 399 plans with 56 days validity became cheaper than that of Reliance Jio plan at the same price.Vodafone Idea too have added Rs 219 plan with same offering as announced by Bharti Airtel. The move from both the companies follows the Supreme Court judgement on adjusted gross revenue.Bharti Airtel has posted a staggering Rs 23,045 crore net loss for the second quarter ended September 30, due to provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling on statutory dues.According to government data, the liabilities in the case of Bharti Airtel add up to nearly Rs 35,586 crore, of which Rs 21,682 crore is licence fee and another Rs 13,904.01 crore is the SUC dues (excluding the dues of Telenor and Tata Teleservices). The government is currently not considering any proposal on waiver of penalties and interest on outstanding licence fee based on adjusted gross revenue (AGR), or on extending the timelines for telecom companies to pay up their statutory dues.
By Indulekha AravindAmerican gender researcher Jackson Katz often tries out this exercise with his audience: he asks men and women what they do to prevent themselves from being sexually assaulted.Invariably, the men are silent or will joke about it till one of them remarks that they don't think about it, while the women will have a list of steps they take every day, from making sure someone knows their itinerary to varying their route home from work. These are responses Isha Goyal, a lawyer in Chandigarh, will identify with. Every night, as soon as she enters her car after leaving work, she switches on the lights to ensure no miscreant is lurking. In Guwahati, pharmaceutical salesperson Soumitra Som's mother waits on the balcony at the end of each day, looking out for her daughter. You are unlikely to hear similar stories from working men.Whenever there is a particularly grievous incident of sexual assault, as in the case of the recent rape and murder of a veterinarian in Hyderabad, there is a public outcry.Yet, there is hardly any discussion among lawmakers on how to make it safe for women to return home from work.If there was, the veterinarian might be alive. If there was, sales assistant Jagriti in Ghaziabad would not have to consider switching jobs, just to avoid being groped in crowded buses nearly every day. This feeling of being unsafe, in turn, affects the presence of women in paid workforce.India has one of the worst commuter gender ratios in the world — data shows that for every four men, one woman commutes for work. According to the last census, over 45% working women do not commute, one of the reasons being the lack of safe transport options. In a country with one of the worst female labour force participation rates, policymakers should pay attention to how they can help women get home from work safely and conveniently. As the voices ET Magazine has gathered from across the country reveal, it is a problem almost every working woman faces and yet one they feel is largely ignored.Elizabeth Gomes49, Data Entry Coordinator, Mumbai 72419347 By Suman LayakMode of Travel: Bus, train, shared autorickshawChallenges:• Harassment in public transport• Long journey in different modes of transportElizabeth Gomes travels 80 km every day — from home to work and back — on buses, trains and shared autorickshaws. She leaves her home in Santacruz, Mumbai, early in the morning. A bus takes her to the railway station from where she boards a train. She changes trains again to get to Rabale in Navi Mumbai and then takes a shared autorickshaw to office, a multinational company where she works as a data entry coordinator.Gomes, 49, says, "My commute is a daily battle for three and a half hours, trying to avoid men touching me inappropriately, on different modes of transport." And no place feels safe — neither a crowded BEST bus nor an empty coach in the Mumbai local."Seven seats are reserved for women in the bus but men often stand next to these, their bodies touching or brushing against us.It's pathetic when even conductors stand with their backs resting on our shoulders," says Gomes. "I do not know if it's deliberate, but they don't try to refrain from it either."She avoids the empty ladies' compartment in the morning train as she is not sure how safe that will be.She returns home by 6:30 in the evening, exactly 12 hours after she left for work. "I am a single parent, and giving up my job over commute issues is not an option ever," says Gomes. So she tries her best to get a window seat, petitions BEST to run buses on time and negotiates her way past men on crowded railway bridges "that can be a nightmare". "Sometimes I hit out at them. I have developed a pair of eyes at the back also," she says, referring to the constant state of alertness mixed with apprehension that women on the move live with.Isha Goyal 31, Lawyer, Chandigarh 72419356 By Ishani DuttaguptaMode of Travel: CarChallenges:• Has to work late often; roads are deserted after 9 pm• Inner city roads don't have enough police patrolIsha Goyal, a Chandigarh-based lawyer, has developed an evening routine. When she steps out of her office, she calls her mother. "Even though my car is parked right outside my office, as soon as I enter the vehicle, I switch on the lights to check there's no miscreant lurking inside," she says. She makes sure that she has enough fuel in the tank and then centrally locks her car before she starts driving — she doesn't unlock her vehicle till she's home.On the way, she sometimes calls her mother when she stops at traffic lights — a reassurance for both the women.Goyal drives 40-45 km daily — from her home to court and her office, and back."While I feel safe driving to work in the morning, after 9 pm I don't feel safe at all," says Goyal. If it gets later than 10.30 pm, the 31-year-old always asks a male colleague to tail her in his vehicle right up to her home.Goyal says Chandigarh is a city where people retire early and so streets become deserted late at night. She recalls how in 2017, Varnika Kundu, a DJ in Chandigarh, had accused a politician's son of chasing her car and stalking her at night."While the main roads have quite a lot of traffic even at night, especially trucks and buses, as well as police patrols and check posts, the inner roads are deserted. The administration should work towards beefing up security in these areas," she says. She takes longer routes just to avoid lonely stretches. "On late evenings, I carefully plan the route back home. I drive only on major roads even if the route turns out to be a few kilometres longer."Anamika Singh26, Consultant, Gurgaon 72419451 By Ishani DuttaguptaMode of Travel: Delhi MetroChallenges:• She has to work late and metro trains don't run after 11:30 pm• The last-mile connectivity and safety from metro station is a problemAnamika Singh, 26, was delighted when she landed a job at a top consultancy firm. But the daily commute by Delhi Metro — from her home in Noida to her office in Gurgaon — was long, taking almost two hours both ways. It became even more difficult when she had to work late."Often I have to work late. Other times, I go out in the evening with colleagues — it is an opportunity to hang out with team members and network," she says. But the last metro train leaves at 11:30 pm, which makes it difficult for working women with late-night shifts, she says. "The Delhi Metro service should be extended by a couple of hours for the sake of women who are working or staying out very late," she says.Eventually, she decided to rent an apartment closer to office with a few others, shelling Rs 12,000 every month. There are elements of the metro that make Singh feel safe: CCTV cameras and security staff at stations and inside coaches."Throughout the metro ride, I feel someone is keeping a watch. I feel secure. But as soon as I leave the station, the problem starts, with dark alleys and lonely stretches of road where there's no one to turn to for help if attacked," she says. The last-mile connectivity and safety are a worry when she goes home to Noida in the weekends. "The last stretch by taxi or autorickshaw never feels safe late in the evening even though it is just for 10 minutes," she says. She calls her parents or her sister to let them know that she is on the way. And they wait for her, worry for her. Till she is home.Soumitra Som 31, Sales Manager, Guwahati 72419581 By Shantanu Nandan SharmaMode of Travel: Two-wheelerChallenges:• A number of by-lanes are poorly lit• Deserted stretchesAs Soumitra Som, 31, reaches home and parks her scooter every night, she looks up at the balcony. Her mother waits for her, every night. Som smiles at her and saunters in, checking unanswered calls and messages on her phone. She knows there will be a few missed calls from her mother."I usually reach home by 9.30 pm. If I am late, even by 15-20 minutes, my mother keeps ringing me up," says Som, who stays at Maligaon in Guwahati. An area sales manager of the pharmaceutical company, Cipla, she has to visit at least 10 doctors a day. "I have a field job so I have to be mobile. But at times I feel I am not safe even on a two-wheeler," says Som over the phone to ET Magazine. She narrates a recent incident of two men chasing her and trying to snatch her keys. "I was just lucky. That's all. After that incident, my mother has become even more anxious," she says.Every morning, she goes on her Honda Dio for her first appointment, usually to Gauhati Medical College. The journey takes at least 45 minutes — that, too, if she avoids the busy arterial road and takes the interiors, riding through narrow lanes and sometimes waiting at a railway crossing.Off the main road, she says, there are deserted stretches that worry her even during the day.Occasionally, when Som takes an Ola cab at night, she makes it a point to share the cab details with a cousin or a friend.Travelling by bus is hardly an option for her because of her tight schedule but, she insists, bus journeys in Guwahati are somewhat safer. The trouble is in last-mile connectivity. "It takes less than 10 minutes from the main road to my home on a cycle-rickshaw. If I walk, it takes 15 minutes. But our by-lane is poorly lit and there are desolate patches," she says. 72419632 Teena Shrivastava 31, Radio Jockey, Bhopal 72419718 By Shephali BhattMode of Travel: Two-wheelerChallenges: • Working late hours• Several unlit, deserted patches on the wayThis may sound weird," says Teena Shrivastava, "but what if the police were to set up call centres to call women relentlessly like those spammers pitching credit cards, insurance and home loans? They could just ask us if we are safe." Instead of selling insurance, these executives would sell assurance, says the Bhopal-based radio jockey. It is past 9 in the evening and Shrivastava is still at work as she speaks to ET Magazine on the phone. She relies on a five-year-old two -wheeler for her daily commute, which takes about 20 minutes one way.At night, the route to her house has several unlit, deserted patches. "You wish the government would treat streetlights as seriously as it does the Swachh Bharat Mission," says the 31-year-old from Gwalior, who moved to Bhopal for better job opportunities."I work late hours almost everyday and my family back home worries for my safety."She may not talk to her mother for days, but every night she has to text her once she is home. The daily commute doesn't worry Shrivastava much as the route is familiar. Fear breeds in unfamiliar areas.Recently, Shrivastava was travelling after dark to the outskirts of Bhopal for work and had to take a cab home. "I felt the driver was taking me through a deserted route so I had to cook up a story about my father being a policeman. One would think a car would be safer than my two-wheeler but I feel it's more dangerous."Throughout the ride, she kept a close friend's and her mother's numbers on speed dial. "The driver turned out to be a nice man in the end but I couldn't shake off my fear," she recalls. It is for moments like these that Shrivastava has taken a quick, self-defence tutorial in taekwondo. "It has taught me how to break free from someone who has locked my body with their hands." She hopes that day will never come.Ushoshi Syam 24, Graphic Designer, Bengaluru 72419800 By Indulekha AravindMode of Travel: CabChallenges: • Finds it difficult to get cabs after work, especially late at night• Poor public transport connectivity means she has few optionsA regular user of Ola and Uber cabs for her commute, graphic designer Ushoshi Syam faces a legion of problems while trying to return home safely every day. Even so, one incident stands out. "My ride was over but the driver kept calling me. When I picked up, he said, 'Why aren't you taking my call? I know where you live,'" recalls the 24-year-old. The cab aggregator said it would take action against him, but Syam does not feel reassured. "I will not get that driver again but I don't know what other action has been taken against him," she says. For Syam, getting to her home from her office in central Bengaluru, 12 km away, is a struggle. Poor public transport connectivity between her home and office makes her dependent on cabs and autorickshaws. She often ends up waiting for more than an hour to get a cab, especially after 6 pm. As the only woman in a team of 30 till recently, her colleagues have often waited with her till she found a cab. They have even told her that she can leave early and work from home. "But I can't always do that, right? Sometimes, it is work that requires you to coordinate among two-three people," says Syam. She lets her boyfriend, who has the same Ola account as her, keep track of her journey home. If she is taking an Uber, she shares her ride details with him and at times with a colleague. As an added precaution, she carries a can of pepper spray in her bag. "I've never used it, but it's there."Syam would like better public transport with last-mile connectivity."I can take the metro from office but it is not easy to reach home. That area is not well-lit too," she says.Cab aggregators, she says, need to be more accountable. "I was sharing a cab with another woman around 10 pm when the driver abruptly stopped, saying he can't go any further. When I called customer support, they said no other cabs were available. These companies need to take complaints more seriously.Right now, no one is held accountable." 72419839 Jagriti21, Sales Assistant, Ghaziabad 72419891 By Ishani DuttaguptaMode of Travel: BusChallenges: • Harassment in the bus and at bus stations• Bus stand is deserted at night and the walk home is unsafeJagriti (she doesn't use a surname), a 21-year-old who lives in East Delhi, has often wondered if she should give up her job as a sales assistant in a mall in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is not the length of the commute that worries her — although that is not easy either — but the harassment that she faces almost daily in public transport. Her commute involves a 10-minute walk from her home to the bus stop from where she takes a DTC bus to the Anand Vihar terminus. She takes a Uttar Pradesh state bus or, at a pinch, a shared autorickshaw to the mall. The large inter-state terminus is crowded. She says she is pushed, shoved, groped and jostled as she waits for the bus. Inside the bus, it is difficult to find a seat during peak hours. "The buses are usually crowded and men grope and harass women. This is a problem I have to deal with almost every day. Even if I raise my voice against such harassment, others don't support me," she says. When she returns home at around 8:30 pm, the bus stop is deserted. She is nervous during the 10-minute walk home. The recent move by the Delhi government to make bus rides free for women hasn't helped her much, says Jagriti. "I can afford the bus fare but I wish some steps were taken to make the buses and the bus stops safe for women passengers from men who harass and molest us." She says she has sometimes spotted marshals in Delhi buses, meant to ensure the safety of women passengers. "But they are not around too often or the buses are so crowded that they find it difficult to catch miscreants." Something has to be done, she says. "Otherwise, the only option for me is to give up this job and find something that doesn't involve bus travel," she says.Deepa Kumari Suman 35, Advocate at District Court, Chakkar, Shimla 72419945 By Prerna KatiyarMode of Travel: WalkingChallenges: • A man harassed and stalked her• Lack of CCTV cameras and police apathyEvery night he waited for me in his taxi at an isolated spot and followed me," recalls Deepa Kumari Suman, an advocate at the District Court in Chakkar, Shimla. "After court hours, often I have to stay back and work till 7:30 pm to meet our clients and finish file work. Just a few weeks back, I noticed a taxi driver following me in a desolate patch, a stretch of two kilometres," recalls the 35-year-old. "The man would drive right behind me while I was walking back home from the court. Finally I told my husband, who followed the stalker, noted down the taxi owner's number written on the car and complained to the owner as well as the police. From the next day, the man was not to be seen."Suman is one of the many women who walk to work. She walks 5 km each in the morning and evening, to and from her home and court. The roads are no longer safe, she says. "Just last year, a woman who used to walk to work like me complained to the police of being followed by a gang of men in a car. The police ignored her complaint and later she was kidnapped in the busy Lakkad Bazaar of Shimla," she alleges. The police, she says, should take preventive action and be more proactive when a woman approaches them. "With the rising consumption of chitta (drugs) and alcohol, it is common to spot college boys and taxi drivers having the substance in public. The police are aware of these points within city limits but they choose to overlook it," she says. "Every woman is wary of passing these spots but we have no choice. We have to work. The police should catching these offenders instead of looking the other way," she says. To feel safe, Suman keeps talking to her husband or a colleague till she reaches home. She says there should be more CCTVs on the road. "While the busy roads in Shimla have some CCTV cameras, the lonely patches lack them altogether. This has to change." 72419967 Kajal Bansal26, Technical Recruiter, Noida 72420042 By Prerna KatiyarMode of Travel: CabChallenges:• Isolated patches, lack of CCTV cameras, prying cab driversWhy should a 20-minute journey be so nerve-wracking? That is a question Kajal Bansal, a senior technical recruiter in Noida in the National Capital Region, asks herself almost every evening, as she takes a cab from her home to office. "It should have been a joy ride but, after dark, it's a different world altogether.""Men stare on the streets and I always think they must have daughters and sisters and wives. Do they behave like this at home?" To be safe, to avoid the stares, Bansal takes a taxi back home. As a precaution, she shares her ride details with her family every day. She is extra cautious in the cab too. "Cab drivers can become chatty and ask too many questions. One has to draw a fine line between not being friendly and yet not being curt," she says. She gives false information to any question seeking personal details.Often, she resorts to phoning a friend and talking to them till she reaches home. "I know the driver is listening to everything. Hence I keep informing the other person on the phone about my current location." Roads are invariably poorly lit in patches on her way home. "CCTV cameras are few and far between," she says. "Most of the streetlights don't work."She wants every office to have a transportation facility for its women employees. "There should be a cab or a shuttle facility after dark, without exception. Won't this make it easier for working women?" she asks.Anusha Katta28, Senior System Engineer, Hyderabad 72420063 By By CR SukumarMode of Travel: Hyderabad Metro, shared auto and cabChallenges:• Harassment in crowded metro coaches• Not enough reserved coaches for womenAnusha Katta, an engineer at an information technology giant in Hyderabad's IT corridor Cyberabad, says lack of safe commute can be detrimental to the career prospects of women. Her own company provides drop facility after 7 pm, but her friends in smaller companies have not been so lucky."Many of my female friends in the IT profession have compromised their career prospects due to night shifts, long commuting hours, and responsibilities of children, parents and in-laws," she says. "Citing unsafe conditions in certain stretches during late evenings, family members ask women professionals not to join projects with night shifts. These projects would have helped them advance their career."A team leader, Katta says women professionals who opt to leave office early invariably lose their chance to be part of some key projects involving large overseas customers. "I have come across instances where women had to decline work assignments due to shifts that ended late in the evening as their families felt it was unsafe. "Katta herself takes the Hyderabad Metro and then a seven-seater autorickshaw or a cab for the last mile. "Men stare at women who are out late but it is their misbehaviour in crowded coaches in broad daytime that sickens me," she says. She wants the Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities to increase the number of coaches reserved for women at least during the rush hour."Women professionals should equip themselves with selfdefence articles like pepper spray. They should also make it a habit to share their live location with friends and family the minute they get into cabs or autos late in the evening," says Katta. 72420076 72420087 Aruja32, Cook, Gurgaon 72420114 By Prerna KatiyarMode of Travel: CycleChallenges:• Men stare at her and verbally and physically harass herThree years back, 32-year-old Aruja (she revealed only her first name) left her hometown in Malda, West Bengal, and reached Gurgaon in Haryana, which she now calls home. "The week I started working here, I heard about a woman, who, like me, was walking back home from work, and was raped and murdered in the dark. That's when I decided to get a bicycle."She makes a living cooking for four households. Thanks to the cycle, she saves time and is not exhausted at the end of the day. The rides though are not safe. "Men make lewd comments and gestures. Once two men tried to stop me when I was returning from work. I screamed 'police' and they ran away. Since then I am careful to change my route every now and then," she says. "However, I hardly spot a policeman in the 4 km stretch I travel. Shouldn't they be on duty at night when it is so unsafe?"She has found three routes from her home to the sector where she cooks, and she takes a different one every other day. "After cooking dinner at the fourth house, I get free by nine at night. Since the time I heard about the horrific Telangana rape, I have become more alert. I wish there were more streetlights and at least one policeman on my route. The didi in Telangana could also have been saved if we had been more careful."Aruja says hanging the culprits in public is the only way to deter potential offenders. "The punishment ought to be as severe as the crime," she says. She doesn't reveal her ordeal to her husband lest he stops her from working. "The only reason I have come here, leaving my daughter with my mother back home, is to make some money. What is the point of staying here if I am not able to earn?" she asks.
A diversity can often open up new avenues. For Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, it might have just opened up new revenue streams. In the first half of 2019-20, the liquidity crisis hovering over the non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) in India reached the doorsteps of M&M Financial. The NBFC arm of automobile major M&M Group — which focuses on vehicles, equipment, and SME financing in rural and semi-urban areas saw profits plunge in both the first two quarters. Growth slowed in the face of poor consumer sentiment even as the cost of funds went up.The scrip plunged 10.5% on a single day after the first quarter results and analysts pointed out how the business model of the NBFC was dependant on the auto industry and the vagaries of the agricultural cycles. M&M Financial, among the top three in vehicle financing in India with a loan book exceeding Rs 70,000 crore, pushed hard on the used-vehicle financing pedal as a first step. And then it decided to evolve its business model, offer new products for new customers along with building a digital access layer. The NBFC is moving into financing consumer durables and personal loans that its customers might need. Its housing finance subsidiary, which only gave small-ticket loans for home extensions and has a loan book of Rs 8,000 crore, will now offer to finance affordable homes too.M&M Finance MD Ramesh Iyer says the consumer durables and personal loans will grow to a loan book of Rs 10,000 crore in two years, while the affordable housing book would grow to around Rs 2,500 crore.Iyer tells ET Magazine he has seen the profile of his customers slowly changing and becoming younger. The farmer who would buy a tractor at the age of 40-45 was now doing so at 30-35. The car buyer was now even younger at 25-35 years from 35-plus earlier. "Customers were increasingly asking for loans to buy consumer durables or loans to meet shortterm business or personal needs. And the customer was more aware of options, ready to hunt for a better price or interest rate. We started asking ourselves how do we meet the demands of this new customer?"72418140 While trying to broaden the range of products, Iyer and his team decided to build a layer of digital access that would ride on the NBFC's physical presence of 1,500 branches. "We had to be phygital," Iyer says. A completely digital strategy is not feasible in rural areas, he says. The first step is to make it easier for an existing customer to access another product, be it a loan or insurance offering. M&M's digital platform will allow a customer to seek loans from his own home through an app or through the website. The company has a 20 member team working on an artificial intelligence platform that would be used to offer products on the basis of metrics such as repayment record and credit score. This would complement the physical presence of the branch network, which still depends on personally assessing a customer and customising products for agricultural cycle-led business models. In a development last week that further helps diversify the loan book, M&M Financial got an investment of $200 million from the World Bank Group's International Finance Corporation, half of which will be dedicated to funding women-led MSMEs.M&M Financial says even otherwise, it was adequately funded. Iyer says: "The liquidity crunch never affected our money supply as we were always able to raise money. But the cost of funds went up by 100-150 basis points since the third quarter of FY19. Customer sentiments were also low since January 2019. Add to this the fact that this is the first year of reporting numbers under the new accounting standards, IND AS."Let us take a look at the numbers now. While consolidated total income had grown from Rs 2,315 crore for the first quarter of 2018-19 to Rs 2,851.70 in Q1 of 2019-20, the reported profit after tax dropped from Rs 322.27 crore to Rs 108.46 crore in the same period. On July 24, a day after the results were announced, the M&M Financial stock shed 10.5% to close at Rs 304.35.72418175 72418181 Edelweiss Securities analysts had said on July 23 that the results were disappointing, though the first quarter is usually soft for the NBFC sector. "MMFSL's business model is directly linked to demand for underlying auto segments, hence earnings will be subject to the seasonality and cyclicality of the same," they added. Expansion of footprint by other NBFCs and a rural slowdown would also affect it. Edelweiss maintained a buy but revised the target price from Rs 518 to Rs 390.In the July-September quarter of FY20 profit more than doubled to Rs 263.6 crore quarter on quarter, but year-on-year net profit was still down by 39%, from the Rs 435 crore recorded in the second quarter of 2018-19. On October 23, Edelweiss revised the stock target price to Rs 397, and said: "With high-cost borrowing retiring & M&M Financial Services' pricing power, we anticipate improvement to play through." The scrip closed at Rs 327.60 on December 6. Slowed growth remains a challenge. Iyer points out that from a 20% growth in business in the festive season of 2018, it is now at a low of 5%.Iyer says the NBFC has made other changes. It has virtually stopped lending to smaller NBFCs. The shortterm money raised through commercial paper have come down to 5-7% of its borrowings from 12-15%. Cost of funds has declined to around 8% from 9.5% last year. Fixed deposits have grown from 7-8% to around 15% of its portfolio. The NBFC is also open to acquisitions — a portfolio buy being the preferred option, rather than buying out another NBFC. All options for growth seem to be on the table.
NEW DELHI: Power generation company NTPC on Saturday said it has signed a term loan agreement for Rs 5,000 crore with State Bank of India (SBI). The loan will be utilised to part finance the capital expenditure of NTPC, it said.
By Yvonne Yue LiGoldman Sachs Group Inc. said investors should diversify their long-term bond holdings with gold, citing "fear-driven demand" for the precious metal."Gold cannot fully replace government bonds in a portfolio, but the case to reallocate a portion of normal bond exposure to gold is as strong as ever," Goldman analysts including Sabine Schels said in a note Friday. "We still see upside in gold as late cycle concerns and heightened political uncertainty will likely support investment demand" for bullion as a defensive asset. 72411630 The precious metal climbed to a six-year high in September as the Federal Reserve cut borrowing costs and the total pile of debt yielding less than zero climbed to a record $17 trillion, boosting the appeal of non-interest bearing gold.Hedge funds and other large speculators boosted their bullish bets on the precious metal by 8.9 per cent in the week ended Dec. 3, government data showed Friday. That's the biggest gain since late September.Gold has fallen more than 6 per cent from the peak to close at $1,460.17 in the spot market Friday. While Goldman said the correction on bullion prices has further room to run, the bank is still sticking to its forecast prices will climb to $1,600 over the next year.
Independent market expert Kunal Bothra says several factors have cumulatively led to a selloff in domestic equities. "In terms of levels, we are perched at very important support on Nifty at 11,800. And I believe the 31,000 mark would be a very important support for Bank Nifty," he said. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW:- ET Now: What happened to the banking space on Friday? Will it continue or can we expect some relief by next week?Kunal Bothra: A couple of things happened. First, in purely technical terms, it's about how the prices behaved in the last one month or from the start of November in many stocks like Reliance Industries, SBI etc. Many of these stocks were making a pattern of new highs on a regular basis but many of the indicators for these stocks have started to make a new low. In technical terms, we call it a bearish divergence, where the prices keep on making new high but the indicators keep on making new lower high and that was one of the key reasons why there was pressure which was visible in the markets. Also, when you look at market internals specifically, since the start of the previous week the market breadth had started to deteriorate first; the advance-decline ratio was on the negative side for almost two or three consecutive days for the previous week and then the large caps started to bleed. These factors cumulatively I believe could have led to the market selloff. In terms of levels, we are perched at very important support on the Nifty at 11,800. And I believe 31,000 is a very important support for Bank Nifty.ET Now: What are the chart patterns indicating for Reliance?Kunal Bothra: Chart patterns suggest that the stock would consolidate now. Many of the indicators for Reliance Industries are showing dual signals. There is a divergence that has bearish implications on the stock price but at the same time, there is a very strong gap support for Reliance Industries and upward gap which was created a couple of weeks back around Rs 1,515-1,530 zone. The stock tried to penetrate this level twice in the last two weeks and on both of the attempts, the stock got back into the demand zone and there was buying which came across. There are two important observations here and both of them contrary to other. The general expectation is that the stock could go through consolidation but one has to understand that Reliance Industries has done exceptionally well in the last two or three months. It is not a high beta stock, it is a relatively low to medium beta stock in terms of price performance. So, if the stock moves up 20-30% in the short span of time, it calls for more time-wise correction rather than price wise correction. I believe Reliance Industries could be at the brunt of it. Over the next couple of weeks, I would expect more sideways range for Reliance Industries.ET Now: What are your top picks for next week?Kunal Bothra: Looking at the weakness in the markets and assuming that we could have a spillover effect next week, I would suggest a couple of shorting ideas. If the market goes into a mode where risk is taken back then I believe many of the high beta stocks would start to correct. Adani Enterprises would have picked up as a first stock on the short side. That stock looks to be retracing some of its gain which it had already shown in the last one or two months. It is placed at Rs 205 plus levels and would be a good shorting opportunity with a target at Rs 196, stop loss at Rs 212 mark. The second would be a sell on Bharti Airtel. The stock has an interesting chart because it is now on the verge of breaking its 20-day moving average support on the daily charts. Looking at the weakness in the last two or three days, the stock from Rs 470 odd levels has corrected gradually towards Rs 440 mark and I believe if this 20-day moving average gets breached it could drag a bit lower. So, I have a sell call on Bharti Airtel with a short term target of Rs 420 and stop loss at Rs 455.
NEW DELHI: An independent cyber security researcher found technical flaws in an application of Bharti Airtel that exposed "sensitive user information" which the company claims to have fixed now. According to the cyber security researcher Ehraz Ahmed the flaw existed in one of the Airtel app that allows "to fetch sensitive user information of any Airtel subscriber." "It revealed information like first and last name, gender, email, date of birth, address, subscription information, device capability information for 4G, 3G & GPRS, network information, activation date, user type (prepaid or postpaid) And current IMEI number," Ahmed said in his blog. The IMEI number is a unique number that can be used to identify the device of the user. "Every user that is on India's Airtel network was at risk of getting his information leaked through this vulnerability, and risking over 325.5 million subscribers in India," Ahmed said. When contacted Bharti Airtel spokesperson acknowledged the flaw and said that it has been fixed as soon as the company was alerted about it. "There was a technical issue in one of our testing APIs, which was addressed as soon as it was brought to our notice. Airtel's digital platforms are highly secure.
