A majority of registered voters believe President Trump will win again in 2020.
A new Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 56 percent of all voters said Trump will be re-elected next year. The president obviously has an edge with Republicans, with 85 percent saying a Trump 2.0 is happening.
But a majority of independents - 51 percent - agreed. Even a third of Democrats, 35 percent, said they believed there would be four more years of President Trump.
WNU Editor: He will be difficult to defeat. President Trump has the advantage of the incumbency and the bully-pulpit. The economy is also doing well, and his base overwhelmingly supports him. The Democrat candidates for President are also not inspiring, and I have trouble seeing them being able to attract independent voters. But the election is still far away. A lot can happen in 12 months.
As Trump allies denounce the whistleblower, pressure is building on CIA Director Gina Haspel to take a stand, say current and ex intelligence officials.
WASHINGTON — As President Donald Trump and his allies continue to denounce the CIA whistleblower whose complaint led to an impeachment investigation, pressure is building on the spy agency's director, Gina Haspel, to take a stand on the matter, current and former intelligence officials tell NBC News.
"It will be incumbent on her to protect the whistleblower — and by extension, the organization — moving forward," Marc Polymeropoulos, a recently retired CIA officer who oversaw operations in Europe and Russia, said in an interview. "This is a seminal moment for her leadership, and I'm confident she will do the right thing."
So far, Haspel has been publicly silent as Trump has railed about the whistleblower, a CIA analyst, on Twitter. So has the director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire.
WNU Editor: There is a problem with this "CIA analyst". He was removed from the White House for lying and leaking. He is implicated in filing a complaint against President Trump and Ukraine that has led to this impeachment inquiry, even though his complaint is at odds with the transcript that was released. He is a well known Democrat activist who is closely affiliated with former Obama intelligence officials whose opposition to President Trump is well known. Bottom line. This is a person who has used his CIA position to pursue a political agenda against the President and his policies. In this context, this is someone that I am sure CIA Director Gina Haspel does not want to step in and defend.
House Democrats have released the latest in the series of heavily-redacted transcripts of the secret hearings they had undertaken in recent weeks - that of Bill Taylor - the top US diplomat in Ukraine - ahead of his public testimony next week.
As The Hill notes, Taylor is viewed as a key witness who previously testified in meticulous detail about what he considered an effort by Trump and his allies to pressure Ukraine into opening investigations that would benefit Trump politically.
In leaked copies of his 15-page opening statement, Taylor voiced concerns that the Trump administration had withheld nearly $400 million in aid as leverage to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open investigations into interference in the 2016 election and former Vice President Joe Biden, one of his leading 2020 political rivals.
WNU Editor: When you listen to the main stream media they are saying that Ambassador Bill Taylor is a critical witness to President Trump's demand for a quid-pro-quo from the Ukraine government on military aid and an investigation on the Bidens .... Why William Taylor's testimony is central to the impeachment inquiry (PBS). But when you read his transcript .... READ: Testimony Of William Taylor, Acting U.S. Envoy To Ukraine (NPR), the story is very different where he admits that his source of information comes SOLELY from the New York Times?!?!?! You gotta be kidding me. His sole source of information that he is basing his testimony on is from the New York Times?!?!?! It is not surprising that the main stream media is ignoring this critical admission. Kudos to the above post from Zero Hedge and The Federalist .... Testimony Transcript Shows William Taylor Never Talked To Trump, Wasn't Even On July 25 Phone Call (The Federalist) for their summary and analysis on Bill Taylor's testimony. As for the Democrats hoping that he will be their "star witness" next week, my advice to them is that they find a better witness.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran resumed uranium enrichment at its underground Fordow nuclear facility, the country's Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) said on Thursday, further stepping away from its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers.
The agreement bans enrichment and nuclear material from Fordow. But with feedstock gas entering its centrifuges, the facility, built inside a mountain, will move from the permitted status of research plant to being an active nuclear site.
"After all successful preparations ... injection of uranium gas to centrifuges started on Thursday at Fordow ... all the process has been supervised by the inspectors of the U.N. nuclear watchdog," the AEOI said in a statement, Iranian media reported
Israel is bracing itself for war with Iranian proxies, as Tehran escalates its provocations. But what will the United States do if conflict comes?
The senior ministers of the Israeli government met twice last week to discuss the possibility of open war with Iran. They were mindful of the Iranian plan for a drone attack from Syria in August, aborted at the last minute by an Israeli air strike, as well as Iran's need to deflect attention from the mass protests against Hezbollah's rule in Lebanon. The ministers also reviewed the recent attack by Iranian drones and cruise missiles on two Saudi oil installations, reportedly concluding that a similar assault could be mounted against Israel from Iraq.
The Israel Defense Forces, meanwhile, announced the adoption of an emergency plan, code-named Momentum, to significantly expand Israel's missile defense capacity, its ability to gather intelligence on embedded enemy targets, and its soldiers' preparation for urban warfare. Israeli troops, especially in the north, have been placed on war footing. Israel is girding for the worst and acting on the assumption that fighting could break out at any time.
WNU Editor: The Syrian conflict, unrest in Iraq, and the Yemen war is where the focus in the Middle East is right now. Another Hezbollah - Israel and/or Hamas - Israel war is not on people's radar.
Washington (AFP) - President Donald Trump's son published on Wednesday the name of the alleged anonymous whistleblower whose complaint fired the impeachment inquiry against Trump, breaking strict conventions for protecting officials who reveal wrongdoing in government.
Amid calls by the president himself to expose the whistleblower, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the name of a CIA analyst which has circulated online for weeks, and linked to a Breitbart news article implying the person was pro-Democrat and anti-Trump.
AFP could not independently verify the whistleblower's identity and is not publishing the name.

Twenty masked gunmen launched a failed attack on a Tajik outpost on the border with Uzbekistan. The rare attack was quashed when border forces launched a counter operation and killed most of the raiders.
At least 17 people were killed in an overnight raid by armed men on an outpost on the border between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Tajik authorities said on Wednesday.
"An armed group of 20 unknown masked individuals attacked a border outpost … using firearms," said Tajikistan's national security committee, according to Russian state-run news agency TASS.
Tajikistan's border forces said the assailants were members of the "Islamic State" (IS) militant group in Afghanistan.
At least five of the gunmen were detained and later provided critical intelligence during interrogations, authorities said.
World leaders have called on Iran to fulfil the terms of its 2015 nuclear deal, after it begins injecting uranium gas into centrifuges at its underground Fordow nuclear facility.
Iran has begun to further distance itself from a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers that curbed its atomic work, local media reported on Wednesday (local time).
The deal bans nuclear material from Fordow and, with the injection of uranium gas into its centrifuges, the facility will move from its permitted status of research plant to become an active nuclear site.
Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi will 'give free rein' to security forces, officials say
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has taken the decision to use a new level of force against mass rallies opposing his rule and "completely destroy the protesters," according to an Iraqi intelligence official.
The country has been gripped by protests since the beginning of October that called for the removal of a political class seen as corrupt and beholden to foreign interests, above all Iran.
"Baghdad are really going to crack down on the protesters, they have made a decision," the official said. "It looks like the prime minister has made a decision that he's going to use force. He's going to completely destroy the protesters."

Fears have been raised that Britain could be frozen out of the 'Five Eyes' spy alliance if Jeremy Corbyn becomes PM.
Concerns are mounting in Whitehall that the flow of intelligence sharing between the UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand could dry up due to a lack of trust in the Labour leader.
Mr Corbyn has been accused of undermining the Trident nuclear deterrent - which Labour in theory is meant to back - by admitting he would never use it.
There are also claims that Mr Corbyn's closest aides could be blocked from seeing top secret material in Downing Street due to links with Russia and the hard Left.
WNU Editor: I doubt that Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party will win a majority when British voters go to the polls in December. But on the odd chance that he does win a majority, a lot of things will be changing in the U.K., and the U.K.'s position in the Five Eyes will be one of them.

Boris Johnson turned his guns on 'dithering' Jeremy Corbyn today as he tried to get his campaign back on track after a series of setbacks.
In a statement on the steps of Downing Street after going to see the Queen to inform her Parliament has been dissolved, the PM appealed for support from voters to 'honour the referendum' and get Brexit done.
Mr Johnson said the public must decide whether they wanted a Tory government that would cut ties with the EU and invest in public services, or Jeremy Corbyn's hard-Left 'horror show'.
Parliament agreed to an early election last week, seeking to end three years of deep disagreement over Brexit.
LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson officially kicks off his election campaign on Wednesday with a promise to "get Brexit done" in contrast to his main rival, whom he compared to Soviet leader Josef Stalin.
Britons go to the polls on Dec. 12 after Parliament agreed to an early election last week, seeking to end three years of deep disagreement over Brexit that has sapped investors' faith in the stability of the world's fifth-largest economy and damaged Britain's international standing.
WASHINGTON ― With an eye on China, the U.S. Senate's top Democrat is floating plans for a new, deep-pocketed agency to invest $100 billion into cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics and fifth-generation networking known as 5G.
Speaking at a conference of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intellgence on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., floated his plans for a new technology-focused subsidiary of the National Science Foundation, which would work with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which would be the foundation's analogue within the Defense Department.
Google wants to move beyond the 'frustrating' criticism of Project Maven and work closely with the Pentagon's year-old Joint AI Center, senior VP Kent Walker said.
WASHINGTON: Google's withdrawal from the military's Project Maven was a one-time "reset" that will not hinder growing cooperation on a wide range of other projects, the company's senior vice president for global affairs said today. "We're eager to do more," Senior VP Kent Walker said.
In what turned into an unlikely lovefest this morning, Kent Walker, Google's current senior vice president for global affairs; Eric Schmidt, formerly Google's chairman and now the chairman of the Pentagon-appointed Defense Innovation Board; and Lt. Gen. John "Jack" Shanahan, the former head of Project Maven now leading the Pentagon's year-old Joint AI Center, sat side by side.
They were on stage at an artificial intelligence conference hosted by the congressionally chartered National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence.
The long road the F-35 took to finally being ready to deploy has forced the Navy's new $13 billion carrier class to leave the plane behind -- for now at least.
WASHINGTON: The Navy is upgrading one of its oldest aircraft carriers to be the first to fly the service's newest plane, the F-35C, giving it a capability the service's brand-new $13 billion carrier, the delayed and trouble-prone USS Gerald R. Ford, won't have for years once it deploys.
Navy officials say the Ford and its follow-on carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy, are not being built to carry F-35s, and will have to undergo upgrades years after they've deployed. The plan is in keeping with a complicated maintenance and upgrade schedule the service has devised to marry ships with the Joint Strike Fighter as both become available.
For the first time, a senior Defense official has called out Beijing for selling lethal autonomy.
China is exporting drones that it advertises as having lethal autonomy to the Middle East, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Tuesday. It's the first time that a senior Defense official has acknowledged that China is selling drones capable of taking life with little or no human oversight.
"As we speak, the Chinese government is already exporting some of its most advanced military aerial drones to the Middle East, as it prepares to export its next-generation stealth UAVs when those come oneline," Esper said today at the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence conference. "In addition, Chinese weapons manufacturers are selling drones advertised as capable of full autonomy, including the ability to conduct lethal targeted strikes."
(RIO DE JANEIRO) — Fires in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands have ripped through the biodiverse region, consuming an area the size of London in just the past 10 days, burning some animals alive and sending others fleeing.
The inferno in the world’s largest tropical wetlands is the latest environmental disaster facing Brazil, coming after a mysterious oil spill that is afflicting beaches in the northeast and August fires that raged in the Amazon region.
The Pantanal, which sprawls over parts of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, is a popular ecotourism destination considered one of the best places to see wildlife in South America. During the wet season, rivers overflow their banks and make most of the region accessible only by boat and plane. In the dry season, wildlife enthusiasts flock to see jaguars lounging on riverbanks, as well as macaws, giant river otters and caiman.
But this year’s dry season has extended much longer than usual.
“Any spark in this area these days of high temperatures and very low humidity will start fires like those we’ve seen in recent days,” Júlio Cesar Sampaio, chief of WWF Brasil’s Cerrado Pantanal program, said by phone. “Only rain will decrease the risk of fire.”
Rescue efforts have so far found burned remains of caimans, iguanas and snakes. SOS Pantanal, a local group, reported that hyacinth macaws, a vulnerable species, lost much of their primary food source as coconut and palm trees went up in flames, and the blue-and-yellow birds have been seen flying about aimlessly.
Between January and November, the area had 516% more fires than the same period last year, according to data from Brazil’s National Institute of Space Research.
While there have been more fires in the Amazon, they have been dispersed across an area roughly half the size of the United States. The blazes in the Pantanal, by contrast, are concentrated in Corumba, a municipality in Mato Grosso do Sul state. Corumba has had about twice as many fires as the worst-affected municipalities in the Amazon.
“There is no precedent for a fire of this scale,” said Angelo Rabelo, president of the Instituto Homem Pantaneiro, an environmental group based in Corumba.
Fires in the Pantanal this time of year are abnormal because heavy rains usually start in October. Rabelo said waters in the rivers and wetlands drained much faster this year. The Paraguay River, one of the region’s main fluvial veins, is at a 20-year low.
“Climate change is here,” he said.
With little precipitation, high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, fires are spreading fast through the low vegetation, authorities say.
The Mato Grosso do Sul state government said in a press release that the fires are “of a proportion never-before registered” and that the causes were both the dry conditions and “criminal activity.”
Firefighters say the cause is likely local people setting fires to clear land of vegetation, a practice also blamed for many of the Amazon fires. Such burning is particularly common among cattle ranchers, who use fire rather than costly equipment to prepare pastures.
Fires in the Pantanal this year have been overshadowed by the months-long period of blazes seen in the Amazon region. The governor of Mato Grosso do Sul declared a state of emergency on Sept. 11 after over 10,000 square kilometers (nearly 3,900 square miles) burned in the previous five weeks in the state’s portion of the Amazon.
The Hyacinth Macaw Institute, an environmental group, released a report Wednesday saying the Pantanal destruction in September and October hit the area’s biggest center for hyacinth macaw reproduction and also came in the middle of mating season. Of 98 nests monitored, at least four baby birds died, their nostrils clogged with soot.
The fires have only worsened since, and still the rain hasn’t fallen.
“I’ve been a firefighter for 23 years,” said Waldemir Moreira, who runs the state fire department’s environmental protection unit. “We’ve certainly had fires before, but it’s much more serious now. We want the world to pay attention to our Pantanal, too.”
(LA MORA, Mexico) — Under a strong security presence, this remote farming community prepared to hold the first funerals Thursday for some of the nine American women and children killed by drug cartel gunmen.
Dozens of high-riding pickups and SUVS, many with U.S. license plates from as far away as North Dakota, bumped across dirt and rock roads over desert, arid grasslands and pine-covered mountains Wednesday as night fell on this community of about 300 people. Many of the residents are dual U.S. and Mexican citizens who consider themselves Mormon but are not affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
At least 1,000 visitors were expected to bunk down in the hamlet overnight ahead of Thursday’s funerals, filling floor space in the 30 or so homes or sleeping in tents they brought with them. At least one cow was slaughtered to help feed the masses, as well as the few dozen Mexican soldiers guarding the entrance to La Mora.
Steven Langford, who was mayor of La Mora from 2015 to 2018, said he expected the killings to have a “major” impact on the community. Once upon a time he didn’t think about moving around the area in the middle of night, but in the last 10 to 15 years things “got worse and worse and worse.” As many as half of the residents could move away, he feared.
“It was a massacre, 100% a massacre,” said Langford, whose sister Christina Langford was one of the women killed. “I don’t know how it squares with the conscience of someone to do something so horrible.”
When gunmen opened fire on them Monday, the Mexican army, the National Guard and Sonora state police were not there to protect them. It took them about eight hours just to arrive.
To many, the bloodshed seemed to demonstrate once more that the government has lost control over vast areas of Mexico to drug traffickers.
“The country is suffering very much from violence,” said William Stubbs, a pecan and alfalfa farmer who serves on a community security committee in the American-dominated hamlet of Colonia LeBaron. “You see it all over. And it ain’t getting better. It’s getting worse.”
The lack of law enforcement in rural areas like the northern states of Chihuahua and Sonora once led the dual U.S.-Mexican residents of places like Colonia LeBaron to form their own civilian defense patrols.
Stubbs said that after the 2009 killing of anti-crime activist Benjamin LeBaron, residents positioned themselves each night for two years with high-powered binoculars to keep watch from the large “L” for “LeBaron” that stands on a hillside above the town.
Since then, he said, the cartels have left Le Baron and the town of Galeana a few kilometers to the north alone. But he said they have watched the cartels get stronger in the past two decades, with nearby communities in the mountains suffering from violence and extortion.
This week, he said, the military told him that the town of Zaragoza had been about 50% abandoned.
The army’s chief of staff, Gen. Homero Mendoza, said Wednesday the attack that killed three American mothers and six of their children started at 9:40 a.m. Monday, but the nearest army units were in the border city of Agua Prieta, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) and 3½ hours away.
Soldiers didn’t start out for the scene until 2:30 p.m. and didn’t arrive until 6:15 p.m. — even while five surviving children lay hiding in the mountains with bullet wounds.
“There are areas where the government’s control is very fragile,” said Alejandro Hope, a Mexican security analyst.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador created the militarized National Guard after he took office last December to help law enforcement, but its 70,000 troops have to cover a vast territory.
“The government’s main policy tool, the National Guard, is not where it should be,” Hope said. “It should be in the mountains, and it’s not there.”
He noted that Sonora and Chihuahua states, with over 160,000 square miles (420,000 square kilometers) between them, have only about 4,100 National Guard agents stationed there, or about one for every 40 square miles.
Questions have also arisen over whether the army can do its job even when it is present. On Oct. 17, in Sinaloa state, soldiers were forced to release the captured son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to avoid further bloodshed after Sinaloa cartel gunmen counterattacked in greater numbers in the city of Culiacan.
Colonia Le Baron is a place where the U.S. influence is evident everywhere: pickup trucks with license plates from California, Idaho, Colorado, Washington, and English-speaking customers eating hamburgers at Ray’s Restaurant, Coffee & Grill. Many of the dual citizens were born here, and their families have been here for decades.
Stubbs predicted that some people will move their families to the United States out of fear but will ultimately come back, as happened after the 2009 killing.
He dismissed López Obrador’s “hugs, not bullets” security strategy of trying to solve underlying social problems instead of battling drug cartels with military force.
“I’m really shocked actually of his way of thinking, and it ain’t going to solve the problems,” Stubbs said.
Residents know they can’t fight the cartels on their own.
“We’re not experts in military and war and weapons,” Stubbs said. “We’re farmers, and we have great families and big families, and we definitely want our families to be peaceful.”
Mexican officials said the attackers may have mistaken the group’s large SUVs for those of a rival gang. The Juarez drug cartel and its armed wing, known as “La Linea,” or “The Line,” are fighting a vicious turf war against a faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the “Salazar.”
“Those who attacked the occupants (of the vehicles), they let the children go, so we can deduce that it was not a targeted attack” on the families, said Mendoza, the army chief of staff.
Most of the victims lived in La Mora, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Douglas, Arizona. Many in the hamlet are related to the extended LeBaron family.
The killers were believed to be from La Linea, whose gunmen entered Sinaloa cartel territory the previous day and set up an armed outpost on a hilltop near La Mora and an ambush farther up the road. The Juarez cartel apparently wanted to prevent Sinaloa gunmen from entering their territory in Chihuahua state.
On Wednesday dozens of army soldiers, federal and state police and National Guard troops provided security along the bumpy route from Chihuahua state to La Mora, in neighboring Sonora, retracing in reverse the route the victims were on when they were ambushed. People in the caravan clapped the agents on the back in thanks and gave them food, bottles of water and baseball caps.
Langford said he and others come and go frequently between La Mora and the United States, working north of the border to build lives and families in a place he described as a “paradise” for children to grow up. Behind the lot where he and his wife raised 11 kids, they are fond of fishing and swimming.
“We’ve always known the dangers. We’ve seen the people doing their deal. We always had the policy, ‘We don’t bother them.’ We never dreamed something like this could happen,” said Langford. “Now this place is going to become a ghost town. A lot of people are going to leave.”
(LONDON) — Prime Minister Boris Johnson told British voters Wednesday that they have to back his Conservatives if they want an end to Brexit delays, as he tried to shake off a rocky start to the governing party’s election campaign.
Speaking outside his No. 10 Downing St. office on the first official day of Britain’s five-week campaign, Johnson said the political impasse over Britain’s departure from the European Union made him want to “chew my own tie in frustration.”
“I don’t want an early election, and no one much wants to have an election in December, but we have got to the stage where we have no choice,” he said.
Johnson, trying to set the stage for a people-versus-Parliament campaign, said lawmakers were “refusing time and again to deliver Brexit and honor the result of the referendum.”
In fact, lawmakers approved Johnson’s EU divorce deal in principle last month, but asked for more time to scrutinize it. Johnson then withdrew the bill and pushed for an early election instead.
Johnson also slammed his main rival, left-wing Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, comparing him to former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and — erroneously — claiming he had sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin over a nerve-agent attack on British soil.
All 650 seats in the House of Commons are up for grabs in the Dec. 12 election, which is coming more than two years early. Some 46 million British voters are eligible to take part in the country’s first December election in 96 years.
Johnson urged voters to deliver a Conservative majority so Britain could “put uncertainty behind us.” With that support, Johnson vowed he would get Parliament to ratify his Brexit deal and the country would leave the EU as scheduled on Jan. 31.
Brexit was supposed to happen on Oct. 31, but with Britain’s politicians deadlocked, the bloc granted the U.K. a three-month delay.
While unofficial campaigning has been ramping up for weeks, the campaign formally began when Parliament was dissolved Wednesday. Johnson went to Buckingham Palace to notify Queen Elizabeth II of the dissolution before unveiling the party’s election slogan — “Get Brexit done and unleash Britain’s potential” — at a rally in the central England city of Birmingham.
The Conservative campaign has had a bumpy start. Just minutes before Johnson spoke Wednesday, Cabinet Minister Alun Cairns resigned over allegations about a former aide’s role in a rape trial.
Cairns said he was quitting as Welsh secretary because of “speculation” surrounding the “very sensitive matter,” which is under investigation. He said he was confident he would be cleared of wrongdoing.
Cairns denies allegations that he knew his former staffer Ross England made claims about a victim’s sexual history when he was a witness in a 2018 rape trial. That is not allowed, and the trial collapsed. The judge accused England of deliberately sabotaging the trial. Cairns later endorsed England as a candidate for an upcoming Welsh Assembly election.
On Tuesday, another Conservative, outgoing House of Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg, was forced to apologize for suggesting that the victims of a 2017 London apartment block inferno that killed 72 people lacked common sense for following fire department advice to wait in their apartments for help.
The comments drew sharp rebukes from opposition politicians — and from rap star Stormzy, who urged the Conservative lawmaker to resign and tweeted: “These politicians are actual aliens.”
The Conservatives were also criticized for posting a doctored video of a senior Labour figure on Twitter that appeared to show him failing to answer a question, when in fact he did. Conservative Party chair James Cleverly claimed Wednesday the ad was just “a lighthearted satirical video.”
In another over-the-top political insult, Johnson used a column in the Daily Telegraph to accuse the Labour Party under Corbyn of attacking the rich “with a relish and vindictiveness not seen since Stalin persecuted the kulaks,” the wealthier peasants targeted by the Soviet regime in the 1930s.
In his Downing Street speech, Johnson also claimed inaccurately that Corbyn had “sided with Putin” after a former Russian spy and his daughter were attacked with a nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury.
Corbyn initially asked for “incontrovertible evidence” that Moscow was behind the 2018 attack, as Britain’s Conservative government had insisted. He later said he believed Russia was responsible for the poisoning.
Other parties in the race include the Liberal Democrats, who want to cancel Brexit; the Scottish National Party, which opposes Brexit and wants Scotland to leave the U.K.; and the Brexit Party, which says Britain should leave the bloc without a deal.
The Labour Party has its own woes, with many of the party’s lawmakers uneasy about Corbyn’s firm left-wing views and ambivalence over the EU. On Wednesday, deputy leader Tom Watson, who has often clashed with Corbyn, announced that he was stepping down from politics.
Watson acknowledged his “political differences” with Corbyn in a resignation letter but said the decision was personal rather than political.
Labour wants to shift the election debate away from Brexit and onto domestic issues such as health care, the environment and social welfare, saying it will reverse Britain’s increasing social inequality.
Corbyn has labelled Johnson’s economic plans “Thatcherism on steroids,” in reference to the free-market, low-spending ideology of the late former Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
“I don’t do personal attacks,” Corbyn told supporters in Telford, central England. He said, if elected, he would be “a very different kind of prime minister.”
“I was not born to rule,” Corbyn said, contrasting himself with the affluent, Oxford University-educated Johnson. “I don’t pursue the kind of politics that thinks it’s all a game, a parlor game, a debating society game.”
OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Gunmen attacked a convoy near a Canadian mining site in Burkina Faso, killing at least 37 people and wounding 60 others, the regional governor said late Wednesday.
Montreal-based Semafo said the bloodshed happened about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from its Boungou mine in Burkina Faso’s Eastern region and involved five buses of employees who were being accompanied by a military escort.
Col. Saidou Sanou, the region’s governor, gave the provisional casualty toll in a statement. The mining company said only that it was aware of “several fatalities and injuries.”
“Boungou mine site remains secured and our operations are not affected,” Semafo said in its statement. “We are actively working with all levels of authorities to ensure the ongoing safety and security of our employees, contractors and suppliers.”
The area has become increasingly precarious for Semafo, which operates two gold mines in Burkina Faso. Last year, an employee and subcontractor were killed when a bus was targeted by bandits, according to Canadian Press. Later last year, five members of Burkina Faso’s security forces were killed in an attack near the Boungou mine.
Sylvain Leclerc, spokeswoman for the Canadian foreign ministry, said there were no reports of any Canadian citizen among the casualties. She added that Canada’s government condemns the attack and supports efforts to bring peace to Burkina Faso.
The violence underscores the rapidly deteriorating security situation in once peaceful Burkina Faso, which has been infiltrated by jihadists who have been active for years in neighboring Mali. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Islamic extremists have staged dozens of attacks on churches and public officials across the north of Burkina Faso the last few years.
Concerted military actions by five regional countries, along with a French operation, have failed to stem the growing violence.
The country, which experienced its first major extremist attack in 2015, is a gateway south into coastal West Africa, and regional leaders worry the extremists could be moving into Togo and Benin.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Saudi government recruited two Twitter employees to get personal account information of their critics, prosecutors said Wednesday.
A complaint unsealed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco detailed a coordinated effort by Saudi government officials to recruit employees at the social media giant to look up the private data of thousands of Twitter accounts.
The accounts included those of a popular journalist with more than 1 million followers and other prominent government critics.
It also alleged that the employees — whose jobs did not require access to Twitter users’ private information — were rewarded with a designer watch and tens of thousands of dollars funneled into secret bank accounts. They were charged with acting as agents of Saudi Arabia without registering with the U.S. government.
Ahmad Abouammo, who left his job as the media partnership manager responsible for Twitter’s Middle East region in 2015, was also charged with falsifying documents and making false statements when questioned by FBI agents. He was expected to make his initial court appearance in Seattle federal court Wednesday afternoon.
That same year, investigators alleged that a Saudi working as a social media adviser for the Saudi royal family, recruited Twitter engineer Ali Alzabarah by flying him to Washington, D.C., for a private meeting with an unnamed member of the family.
“Within one week of returning to San Francisco, Alzabarah began to access without authorization private data of Twitter users en masse,” the complaint said.
The effort included the user data of over 6,000 Twitter users, including at least 33 usernames for which Saudi Arabian law enforcement had submitted emergency disclosure requests to Twitter, investigators said.
After being confronted by his supervisors at Twitter, Alzabarah allegedly admitted to accessing user data and said he did it out of curiosity.
Alzabarah was placed on administrative leave, his work-owned laptop was seized and he was escorted out of the office. The next day, he flew to Saudi Arabia with his wife and daughter and has not returned to the United States, investigators said. A warrant for his arrest was issued as part of the complaint.
Passengers and crew on board a plane at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam were reported safe after Dutch police began investigating a “suspicious situation” on Wednesday.
A tweet from the official Schiphol airport’s account said the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the Dutch military police, is looking into the situation on board of a plane at the airport. The police’s official Twitter account also confirmed the investigation.
The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is currently investigating a situation on board of a plane at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. We keep you posted. https://t.co/AxwMZ7CZtT
Details about what police were investigating on the plane were not immediately available.
About an hour after announcing the start of the investigation, police and airport officials said the passengers and crew were safely off the plane. The investigation on the plane continues, they said.

The airline Air Europa said Wednesday afternoon that a false alarm prompted the investigation. A warning that “triggers protocols on hijackings at the airport” was activated by mistake on a flight from Amsterdam to Madrid, according to a tweet from the airline.
#AirEuropaInfo False Alarm. In the flight Amsterdam – Madrid, this afternoon was activated, by mistake, a warning that triggers protocols on hijackings at the airport. Nothing has happened, all passengers are safe and sound waiting to fly soon. We deeply apologize.
Air Europa noted in a followup tweet that its flight to Madrid would take off shortly. Schiphol airport said later Wednesday afternoon that regular operations had resumed at the airport.
As a result of the investigation by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, our D pier was temporarily closed. From now on, there is a regular operation at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol again.
The decisive rise of the “OK Boomer” meme continues.
On Monday, an MP from New Zealand’s Green Party, 25-year-old Chlöe Swarbrick, delivered a speech in support of a Zero Carbon Bill, which would provide a framework to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions and establish a new Climate Change Commission. The government’s previous plan to limit greenhouse gases has been criticized by climate activists as insufficient.
“Mr. Speaker, how many world leaders for how many decades have seen and known what is coming, but have decided that it is more politically expedient to keep [climate change] behind closed doors?” she asked. “My generation and the generations after me do not have that luxury.”
“In the year 2050 I will be 56 years old… yet, right now, the average of this 52nd Parliament is 49-years old,” she continued. In response, another MP began to heckle her.
“OK boomer,” Swarbrick shot back.
Green MP @_chloeswarbrick was heckled by a National MP during her speech on the Zero Carbon Bill.
She fired back with "okay boomer" but the captions on Parliament TV clearly have not yet got the memo on millennial slang: pic.twitter.com/zF8Ogp4Geu
Not sure what she’s referring to? The phrase “OK boomer” comes from a viral meme that originated on the social media site TikTok. The videos usually include an audio clip of an older man saying, “The millennials and Generation Z have the Peter Pan syndrome, they don’t ever want to grow up.” Teens then include their reactions, always a variation on the phrase “OK Boomer.”
The phrase has taken off across the Internet and beyond, and become a common retort used by young people when confronting condescension from older people, usually those of the Baby Boomer generation.
saying “eat the rich”
-depressing -been done -makes people think you’re a cannibal
saying “ok boomer”
-fresh -new -hurtful to a generation that ruined the planet and economy
In an interview with Stuff, Swarbrick explained her use of the phrase: It’s a “simple summarisation of collective exhaustion,” she said. “Young people have suffered a decade of jibes about how millennials have ruined everything and need to ‘pull our socks up,’ or something.”
“‘OK boomer’ acknowledges that you cannot win a deeply polarized debate — facts don’t matter,” she continued. “It’s better to acknowledge that perhaps energy is better spent elsewhere.”
(Bloomberg) — The mayor of western Hungary’s largest city, who was re-elected despite the publication of a video showing him participating in an orgy on a luxury yacht, has resigned less than a month after winning a fourth term.
Zsolt Borkai, the mayor of Gyor and a 1988 Olympic champion gymnast, said in an open letter on Wednesday that he was stepping down because of his “moral predicament.” His resignation is effective Friday. Under pressure, Borkai had already quit Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling party last month.
Hungary’s opposition had seized on the Borkai scandal during the campaign for nationwide municipal elections as evidence of moral decay under Orban’s nine-year rule. The video was widely seen as having helped tip close races in favor of a united opposition, including in Budapest, and deal the Hungarian leader his worst electoral setback in more than a decade.
(GALEANA, Mexico) — The eight children, some mere infants, who survived the ambush in northern Mexico not only escaped the drug cartel gunmen who killed their mothers but managed to hide in the brush, with some walking miles to get help despite grisly bullet wounds.
In a testament to a mother’s devotion, one woman reportedly stashed her baby on the floor of her Suburban and got out of the vehicle, waving her arms to show the gunmen she wasn’t a threat. She may have moved away from the vehicle to distract their attention; her bullet-ridden body was found about 15 yards (meters) away from the SUV.
The mother was one of nine U.S. citizens — three women and six children all living in northern Mexico — slaughtered Monday when cartel gunmen ambushed three SUVs along a dirt road in an attack that left one vehicle a burned-out, bullet-riddled hulk. Mexican officials said the gunmen may have mistaken the group’s large SUVs for those of a rival gang amid a vicious turf war.
The five wounded children were seriously enough injured that Mexican authorities flew them to the border in a military helicopter to receive hospital care in the United States. Sonora state health officials said they were “stable” at the moment of transfer. Three other children who were not wounded are in the care of family members in the tiny hamlet of La Mora in northern Mexico.
But what the children went through in the remote, mountainous area of Sonora state is nearly indescribable.
Kendra Miller, a relative, said in an account of the shootings that Devin Blake Langford, 13, was one of the few uninjured young people and quickly took charge, eventually walking about 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) back to La Mora for help.
“After witnessing his mother and brothers being shot dead, Devin hid his six other siblings in the bushes and covered them with branches to keep them safe while he went for help,” according to the account. “When he took too long to return, his 9-year-old sister left the remaining five to try again.”
That girl, Mckenzie Rayne Langford, walked for hours in the dark before she was found several hours after the other children were rescued. She was listed as missing for a while.
Altogether, the kids were on their own from about 1:00 p.m., when the ambush began, until about 7:30 p.m., when they were rescued. Relatives from La Mora tried to reach them before that, but were turned back by gunfire. The area is the site of a cartel turf war.
In recordings of calls between the rescuers, they can be heard debating whether it was better to risk more lives, or wait for an hour or two until Mexican army troops arrived. It was an agonizing decision.
What they saw when they found the children was terrifying.
Cody Greyson Langford, 8, had been shot in the jaw and bled profusely. Another girl had been shot in the foot and the back.
The killers were apparently members of the Juarez drug cartel and its armed wing, La Linea — “The Line” — whose gunmen had entered Sinaloa cartel territory and set up an armed outpost on a hilltop and an ambush further up the road. The Juarez cartel apparently wanted to send a message that it controlled the road into Chihuahua. It was this invasion force that the American mothers and their three vehicles drove into.
It was only after the first vehicle was shot up and set afire that 50 or 60 Sinaloa cartel gunmen showed up to see what had happened.
But it isn’t the cruelty of the cartel, but the bravery, innocence and sacrifice of the victims that relatives want remembered.
Austin Cloes, a relative of the victims, said from his home in Salt Lake City that they were good people who loved their children and enjoyed their quiet lives based around a successful pecan farming operation.
“This sort of thing shouldn’t go unnoticed,” said Cloes, who works with at-risk youth and coaches high school basketball. “And these sorts of people shouldn’t just be buried without their names being put out there. These are great people.”
The dead in the attacks included a mother, her 8-month-old twins, her 10-year-old daughter, a 12-year-old son. Another mother lay dead in the front seat of another Suburban, along with the bullet-riddled bodies of her sons, ages 11 and 2.
The victims lived in Sonora state, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Douglas, Arizona, in the hamlet of La Mora, which was founded decades ago by an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many La Mora residents call themselves Mormons but are not affiliated with any church.
A number of such American farming communities are clustered around the Chihuahua-Sonora state border. Many members were born in Mexico and have dual citizenship. While some of the splinter groups were once polygamous, many no longer are.
All of the victims were apparently related to the extended LeBaron family in Chihuahua, whose members have run afoul of the drug traffickers over the years. Benjamin LeBaron, an anti-crime activist who founded neighborhood patrols against cartels, was killed in 2009.
The victims had set out to visit relatives in Chihuahua. One woman was headed to the airport in Phoenix to meet her husband.
While a drug-related violence has been raging for years in Mexico, the attack underscored the way cartel gunmen have become increasingly unconcerned about killing children as collateral damage. In August in Chihuahua state, cartel gunmen fired 123 bullets at a man and also killed three girls, ages 4, 13 and 14. In June, a young boy was killed along with his father in Sonora state. In July, a 10-year-old was killed during a robbery in Puebla state.
Criminal investigators said late Tuesday that a suspect was arrested, but it was unclear whether the person had taken part in the ambush.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Agency for Criminal Investigation for the state of Sonora said that the suspect was found in the town of Agua Prieta, right at the border with the U.S. state of Arizona, holding two hostages who were gagged and tied inside a vehicle.
The suspect, whose gender was not specified in the statement, was also found in possession of four assault rifles and ammunition, as well as various large vehicles including a bullet-proofed SUV, the agency said.

(LONDON) — Buckingham Palace says new outfits designed for Queen Elizabeth II will not use real fur.
The palace said Wednesday the decision does not mean the queen will dispose of all the fur outfits she already has. The palace statement says “the queen will continue to re-wear existing outfits in her wardrobe.”
The decision pleased animal rights activists, who have sometimes criticized the monarch for the fur pieces in her collection of designer clothes.
Claire Bass, director of the Humane Society International/UK, says “we are thrilled Her Majesty has officially gone fur-free.” She says the queen’s decision will send a positive message that fur is no longer considered fashionable.

NEW DELHI: The impact of the Supreme Court order on the definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) may not be restricted to telecom companies. It could also have an impact on any entity that has taken telecom service licence, such as internet service providers (ISPs), satellite communications providers, cable operators and even companies in the power, steel and railways sector, said legal experts and industry executives, making them liable to pay AGR-based dues.People familiar with the matter said that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is examining the wider ambit of the apex court's judgement, which backed the government's stance of including non-core revenue under AGR. Discussions have started on whether the DoT can send demand notices to such companies. Under the Supreme Court order, telecom companies may need to pay over Rs 1.3 lakh crore in three months in AGR-based dues."A licence which has the words 'gross revenue,' be it ISP or telecom or any other similar licence, will have to share a part of its gross revenue with the government, by applying the principles of the SC judgement," said senior advocate Gopal Jain. "DoT's argument in the telecom case was that gross revenue would include income and revenue from all streams." Telcos pay licence fee to the government on the basis of AGR.About 40 Licence HoldersDoT could demand licence fees, interest, penalties and interest on penalties from about 40 licence holders. A rough calculation puts this amount at more than Rs 94,000 crore in dues over the past five years and more than Rs 2.8 lakh crore for the past decade, including interest and penalties, an executive added. This could have a broader impact amid slowing economic growth."The ruling may have wider impact including a domino or cascading effect, given the fragile state of the economy," Jain said. "Key sectors must be strengthened that will give a fillip and a boost. Economic sentiment is crucial at this juncture and it is important that industry is in a position to raise resources and discharge debt, so that (they) fire on all cylinders as India is looking to grow to become a $5 trillion economy."In its October 24 judgement, the Supreme Court said gross revenue for arriving at AGR would be the "total revenue of licensee company." Further, revenue arising out of non-telecom activities, with certain exceptions, will have to be included in gross revenue, which would be the total revenue of the company. As per DoT's website, about 40 entities in power, steel, metro rail, oil and gas, cable television and other sectors have taken licences to provide national long distance (NLD), international long distance (INLD) and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) services, as well as a unified licence, which includes all of these categories and more. All of them could be liable to pay AGR dues even though they were not party to the case or the migration package that telecom companies like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea took to move from a licence fee regime to revenue sharing in 1999.Telecom service providers such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, party to the case since 2003, have to pay licence fees, interest, penalties and interest on penalties amounting to over Rs 92,000 crore on revenue that has accrued to them from all activities. The carriers would also have to pay spectrum usage charges (SUC) amounting to nearly Rs 41,000 crore for a period of about 16 years. The carriers have urged the government for some relief, given the sector's financial condition, with debt of over Rs 7 lakh crore amid increasing competition and eroding revenues and profits due to rock bottom tariffs. A government panel is exploring ways of providing some relief to restore the health of the sector.
MUMBAI: Infosys has hired PwC to investigate two whistle-blower complaints alleging financial malfeasance against chief executive Salil Parekh and finance chief Nilanjan Roy, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said. The Bengaluru-based technology company has already roped in law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas to look into the legal side of the complaints and asked its internal auditor, EY, to probe its revenue recognition practices. Its board on Saturday decided to carry out an investigation independent of the other two as it wanted a "fresh set of eyes" to look into the allegations, said the people.PwC's investigation would cover the contracts that Infosys entered into with some of its clients and the way it recognised revenue, they said. It has been asked to submit the report within two months. 71947565 "Initially there was a view that most people including investors and clients would see that the issue and allegations do not hold water. But looking at the impact that this has had (on stock price and reputation), many board members were of the view that a separate investigation should also be carried out," said one of the people. An Infosys spokesperson, responding to an email query, said, "We do not have any information or comment to share on the below (question) at this time." PwC did not respond to ET's query till press time Wednesday."The investigations would focus on the allegations, but the firm (PwC) is mandated to even go beyond the allegations and a broader time period, and the company's deals would be investigated," said another person in the know. "The firm has been asked to submit the report as early as possible," he said."Process review of certain contracts with customers would be carried out … This is a separate line of investigation and we want that this forensic audit (by PwC) look into revenue recognition and actually investigate contracts," said the third person.Infosys last month said an unnamed whistle blower, apparently a group of employees, had accused top executives of unethical practices. The company said its audit committee had been asked to look into the complaints and take necessary actions. The whistle-blower letter, written to the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the board of Infosys, alleged that fearing a negative impact on the share price, the CEO instigated some employees to bypass approvals in order to fetch some large deals.
MUMBAI: Tata Trusts has informed income tax authorities that it does not need exemptions to carry out charitable activities. This was stated by Tata Trusts in its submission to the tax authorities in October.Officials close to the trusts said the intent of these institutions has always been to carry out philanthropic activities, with or without tax exemptions. However, the trusts could find themselves in a precarious position if they lose the ongoing legal tussle with the I-T department, added the officials."...It is important to appreciate that in its essence the Trust was established for undertaking charitable activities. The Trust has not lost its character as a charity; it has only given up the registration. The Trust does not derive its identity as a charity from the Income Tax Act. The registration only confers certain benefits because the Trust is a charity," said the reply filed by one of the six trusts, which was reviewed by ET.71947599 On October 31, the office of the principal commissioner of income tax (Mumbai) cancelled the registration of six Tata trusts — Jamsetji Tata Trust, RD Tata Trust, Tata Education Trust, Tata Social Welfare Trust, Sarvajanik Seva Trust, and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust — for alleged violation of the Income-Tax Act."If we are forced to pay the arrears after the long-drawn legal process, we might as well fold up. And that will be a big loss to our nation," said an official close to the trusts.Tax Dept Cited Two Main GroundsWhile the tax department has not yet sent a demand notice, sources in the Trusts said they will have to pay upfront 20% of the estimated Rs 12,000-crore tax demand before approaching the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). These sources added that the grounds mentioned by the Trusts while contesting the I-T notice in October will also be mentioned in the appeal before ITAT. Officials close to the development said Tata Trusts will have to sell its shares in Tata Sons to meet the potential tax liability. The Tata Trusts, chaired by Ratan Tata, is the largest shareholder in Tata Sons with 66% equity stake. The trusts include Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, JRD Tata Trust, RD Tata Trust, Tata Education Trust, Tata Social Welfare Trust and Sarvajanik Seva Trust. Vijay Singh, Venu Srinivasan and RK Krishna Kumar are the main trustees of these trusts.Sir Ratan Tata Trust owns 23.56% stake in the conglomerate's holding company Tata Sons, while Sir Dorabji Trust owns 27.98%.In July, the I-T department had served notices on a set of Tata trusts, seeking to reopen assessment, and questioning their decision to surrender registrations in 2015. According to Section 115 (TD) of the I-T Act, a trust whose registration has been cancelled is required to pay tax on accumulated, or 'accreted', income. The tax authorities have cited two main grounds for cancelling registrations of the trusts. One is the investments by the trusts in shares of group companies, which has been prohibited since 1971. The second is that the trusts were not functioning as per the terms of their deeds.A Tata Trust spokesperson said: "We categorically state and underscore that all our actions adhere with the Trust deeds, and are in the best interest of the Trusts. The Trusts are meant for charity, and our actions maximise our ability to perform charity. There is no violation of the deeds, there is no breach of trust."According to I-T department sources, the licences — which have been cancelled for violating the provisions of Section 115 (TD) — allow the trusts six months to file an appeal before the ITAT. "Post the expiry of the period of filing an appeal or the order in any appeal confirming the cancellation is received by the Trusts, the Trust shall be liable to pay tax on the accreted income within 14 days," states the Act.The dispute dates back to 2013, when the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) pointed out that Jamsetji Tata Trust and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust had invested Rs 3,139 crore in "prohibited modes of investment". The CAG noted that the I-T department had given "irregular tax exemptions" to these trusts, resulting in loss of several crores of rupees to the exchequer. The CAG report said some of the Tata trusts held shares of Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Capital Ltd. A part of the TCS shares were subsequently divested and proceeds invested in preference shares of Tata Sons Ltd. These actions, as per the CAG, violated norms governing investments by charities.According to the persons cited above, the CAG has been writing to the tax department since 2013 seeking updates on action taken by the taxman on its findings. "Until 2015, the case was with the exemption wing (of I-T department). After the said trusts surrendered their licences, they started filing returns with the assessment wing. The newly added provision of Section 115 (TD) included in June 2016 — which allows them to claim 'accreted income' — wasn't available in 2015 when the trusts 'surrendered' their registration. However, last year, when the CAG sent another reminder, the accounts were studied and a view was taken to reopen the case," said a person privy to the developments."The I-T department's demand is based purely on the irregularities flagged off by the CAG, and subsequently mentioned by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC). It's their (the trusts') decision to stop charitable activities if they so desire. The department doesn't have a say in it," added the official, who asserted that the department will contest if Tata Trusts moves the ITAT.The Trusts have clarified on their holdings of shares of group companies: "...with reference to shares of TCS and Tata Capital held by the Trust, the provisions of Section 13(2)(h) of the I-T Act would not be applicable as these shares were received by the Trust as corpus donation and there was no investment made by the Trust."The investment in preference shares of Tata Sons Ltd was with the permission of the charity commissioner and the same were redeemed by May 2016. The proceeds from the redemption flowed into the Trusts' corpus. "Tata Sons had agreed to give the higher dividend rate specifically because the Trust is a public charitable Trust... the Trust has benefited from the investment. There is nothing to demonstrate that this investment was not in the interest of the Trust or to suggest that the Trust could have deployed its liquid funds in an alternate mode of investment which could have yielded higher return in such a short term," added the reply.Another major ground for cancellation of the registrations cited by the I-T department is the alleged violation of the Trusts' deeds. In its show-cause notice, the department said, "The trust failed to abide by its own deed as the activities of the trusts are not being carried out in accordance with the objects of the Trusts."The Tata Trusts has contested this view, saying the I-T department made general and vague allegations, and failed to specify the exact activities that were not in accordance with the objects of the Trusts. "...the proviso to clause 4 of the Trust deed does not in any way limit the power of the trustee to surrender the registration if such an act would enable the Trust to have more funds available for pursuing its charitable objectives," said the October filing by Tata Trusts."Dividend income being the main source of income of Trusts, the trustee decided in good faith to surrender the registration and claim benefit of general exemption," said the reply.
Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani said the company's processes were very strong and that 'not even God' could change the reported numbers and that board supported the IT firm's management in executing its strategy.Last month, ET reported that whistleblowers had mailed the company's board and the US Securities and Exchange Commission alleging that the company's CEO Salil Parekh and CFO Nilanjan Roy were using aggressive accounting and hiding information from the auditors in order to boost revenue and margin. The company is being investigated by the US regulator and is facing strong criticism on its handling of the issue. Infosys has appointed Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas to investigate the claims."Infosys has strong processes, even God can't change the numbers of this company. Our finance team is feeling insulted by these allegations. But I don't want to bias the investigation," Nilekani told analysts at the company's analyst meet in Bengaluru. The whistleblowers had alleged that the company was not recognising $50 million in revenue reversals in some deals.71947609 Nilekani also allayed fears that the company's clients would hold back spending until the issue was resolved. He said Infosys had proactively reached out to customers to allay any concerns."Customers are extremely supportive. Customers have faith in Infosys and deal flow continues to be as good as ever," Nilekani said.He added that the company was doing everything to run business as usual and that he was grateful to the management for focusing on business. On Monday, Infosys said that it has not received any 'prima facie' evidence to corroborate the whistleblowers allegations of financial malfeasance against its top executives. The software exporter said its audit committee had begun consultations with the company's independent internal auditor Ernst and Young even before it retained outside investigators."Given the circumstances at this stage, where there is complete absence of prima facie evidence and the Anonymous Complaints are still under investigation, the Company is not in a position to determine the concreteness, credibility and materiality of the anonymous complaints," the company said in a statement to the National Stock Exchange on Monday evening.Infosys stock rose 3% following Nilekani's statements on the Bombay Stock Exchange. In October after the news of the whistleblowers' complaint broke, Infosys' shares had plunged over 16% to close at Rs 643.55 on October 22. In letters shared with ET, it appears that the whistleblowers have shared emails and call recordings to back their claims of financial malfeasance with the US SEC. However this additional information was not provided in the whistleblower letters addressed to the Infosys Board.Following the receipt of these anonymous complaints, the board discussed the matter during its meeting on October 11. Subsequently on October 21, it appointed law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and EY to look into the allegations. EY had already been tasked to look into the issue in the previous week.

NEW DELHI: Domestic production of crude oil and natural gas has fallen by 6% and 1.5%, respectively, in the first half of the current fiscal year, further increasing dependence on imports to meet rising demand.India's oil demand growth too has slowed to 1.4% in the April-July period, compared to 3.5% in the same period last year, but a sharper decline in production has increased reliance on imports. Foreign oil made up 84.5% of the country's needs in six months to September, up from 83.3% a year earlier. Imported gas accounted for 51.2% of local needs, higher than 48.7% in the first half of last fiscal year. The government has been aiming to cut oil import dependence to 67% by 2022 but local output has been falling year after year mainly due to ageing fields and lack of major discovery. The government has introduced several policy initiatives in recent years aimed at attracting more capital and technology to the upstream sector, which in turn is expected to help raise local output. Companies too have been investing billions of dollars but country's overall output has continued to slip.Crude oil production during April-September was 16.37 million tonnes, 5.96% lower than a year earlier.ONGC, the country's largest producer of oil and gas, produced 10.25 million tonnes, 3.97% less than a year earlier. Increase in water cut in some fields, pipeline issues and other technical problems contributed to production decline at ONGC, as per the oil ministry's monthly report on oil production.Oil India's output contracted 4.24% from a year earlier to 1.61 million tonnes.Production from fields operated by private players contracted at a much faster clip, with output falling 10.74% to 4.5 million tonnes. Vedanta's Mangla, Bhagyam and Aishwarya fields in Rajasthan underperformed due to several operational issues.Natural gas output was 16 billion cubic meters, 1.5% less than in the first half of last year.ONGC's gas output fell 0.45% to 12.07 billion cubic meters due to general decline in output from ageing fields, a fire incident at Uran plant in September, and less offtake by some clients. Gas production from fields operated by private players contracted 11.22% to 2.54 billion cubic meter.
By Chandan TapariaNifty opened negative and drifted towards the 11,850 mark in the first half of Wednesday's session. However, it saw a sharp recovery from lower levels and extended the gains towards the psychologically important 12,000 mark. The index has been finding multiple supports near the 11,850 mark for last five sessions and as long as it holds the same, it has the potential to even head towards the lifetime high of 12,103 mark.It formed a bullish candle on the daily chart, as every dip got bought into and support levels shifted higher gradually. Nifty has been respecting the rising support trend line and it has to hold above 11,850 level to witness an up-move towards 12,000 and then 12,103 levels, while on the downside, major support is seen at 11,780 level. On the monthly options front, maximum Put open interest was at 11,600 followed by 11,500 level, while maximum Call open interest was at 12,000 followed by 11,800 levels. The momentum is coming because the worst is getting over for many of the companies and especially the good quality companies, says Mahantesh Sabarad, Head, Retail Research, SBICAP Securities. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW. Prices have come back, but the economy is not yet back. Are markets running ahead of themselves? What we are witnessing is the phenomena of what is classically termed as the worst is over as far as the markets are concerned. That means, even if the economy is painting a little bleak picture or even if some of the corporate earnings are missing their estimates (volume numbers of automobiles are still de-growing and cement is still not so good), the markets are saying that a suitable base has been formed in terms of earnings and in terms of profitability. The market starts moving up, saying the worst is over. That is what we are classically witnessing right now. We are reaching back to the all- time highs. In fact, Sensex has already crossed the all-time high of the recent months. We believe that the worst is over for most of the companies. There will be good growth ahead for a lot of them. Have you had a chance to look at Cipla earnings? The stock has cooled off but it was a decent set of numbers. We have been looking at a whole host of pharma names on the back of earnings today.I would not look at the Cipla numbers but some of the pharma companies have reported strong numbers and this is coming on the back of the fact that we have the corporate rate reduction flowing in at the net profit level, not necessarily the PBT level. But for many of the pharma companies, the domestic environment has been relatively stronger and somewhere the US market is depending on which therapeuticals side you are in. It is a mixed bag. Some are doing well, some are not, but the common theme is that most of the pharma companies have enjoyed the tax benefit in full and that is visible in the way, some of the stocks have moved up. Eicher is up 30%, Maruti is up 35%, State Bank of India has moved from Rs 255 to Rs 310, ICICI Bank is sitting at an all time high. If a client now asks you whether you should chase the momentum now or wait for a meaningful 10-15% decline, what will you advise? No, I do not think we can look at a meaningful decline of 10-15%. Those days are now gone for the market in the near term. If at all, you have to play the momentum game. You cannot miss out the market by sitting on cash. The momentum is coming because the worst is getting over for many of the companies and especially the good quality companies. If a Maruti for example is showing a 25% volume decline in the first half of the month and is guiding for the year to be at a negative growth rate, it tells you that this year is gone is factored in. But the next year is going to be even better and many of these companies have a built-in hope because from an operational standpoint, they have not missed margins. Their margins are not low. In fact, if at all, they are guiding for better margins ahead. Financial services companies are guiding for lower slippages, lower NPAs and so on. The guidance that is coming out from some of the large companies is very strong and one has to reiterate that it is a worst is over kind of a market. What was your takeaway from the Infy conference call?It was very clear that there is no proof behind the allegations that have come from the whistleblower. That was one event which caused the stock to tank and people had the previous episode in mind when the stock tanked when you had similar allegations coming out at the time of the Panaya buy. Then, at least a certain proof was submitted, there was a whole lot of investigation and after the churn that Infosys saw in terms of corporate governance, a lot of senior management was changed. Nandan Nilekani came back again. The track record of Infosys since those days has been pretty strong, both from its business point of view and even from a corporate governance standpoint I would say because this whistleblower complaint was really speaking of a meaningless kind of complaint backed by no proof. The entire loss that Infosys suffered in terms of the stock price fall will be recovered. That recovery has not happened still, even at the current price of Rs 710 or 712. We expect Infosys to recover quite strongly. What is one of your high-risk-high-return ideas where there could be a 10% downside or maybe a 15% volatility, but your analysis is indicating that 30-40% even 50% gains are coming in the next 12 to 18 months? There is clearly one sector where we see something which you did mention is likely to happen and it is in the auto ancillary space. A lot of auto ancillary names have fallen quite sharply. The distinction we are making is that some of the auto ancillaries are global in nature and some domestic. One should look at only those which are domestic kind of auto ancillary companies that have sharply fallen down. With a large volatility and perhaps a small downside, they have the promise of delivering very good returns as we move forward. If we take a one-year or a two- year view. Many of these auto ancillaries are suppliers to the large OEMs including Maruti. You can pick names within that. We already have coverage on a small auto ancillaries like PPAP Industries which can likely do well. So this is one space. We have some other stocks where one can potentially get great numbers and this is the housing space. More houses built means more cement, more cement possibly means that you will require more coal. Right now, they are dependent on domestic coal but you will have Coal India upping its production after a phase of de-growth. When coal production goes up, there is the requirement of a certain kind of explosives. We recently met a company called Solar Industries which make explosives used by the mining companies. So, these are companies which will have solid volume growth. We are looking at companies which can have solid volume growth delivery in the next one or two years, because of a low base effect. With operating leverage coming in and margins improving, probably these companies can deliver great returns in the years ahead.
BENGALURU: Infosys is looking to cut costs by $100-$150 million this financial year, as it hires freshers to reduce employee costs and rejigs roles for middle and senior management, a top company executive said at an analyst meet. The company's margins have dropped significantly under CEO Salil Parekh, as it boosted investments to drive growth. The company is, however, now looking at greater cost savings, since a major chunk of its investments has been completed."There are 21 tracks we are looking at for cost-optimisation. We are targeting $100-$150 million in cost savings as the year goes on," chief financial officer Nilanjan Roy said on Wednesday.Roy said the firm was focused on improving the bottom-end of its pyramid, which had become more barrel-shaped, by hiring freshers. It was also looking to recreate the pyramid onsite through fresher hiring, he added.Infosys has hired 1,700 freshers in the US and Europe in the past year.Roy said the company would move to an asset-lite model for new infrastructure.Analysts said the cost optimisation plan was a routine move aimed at reducing wage costs by hiring more freshers. "Cost optimisation happens every year through one or other measure. It is not that such a saving is new. They have used wage rationalisation by hiring freshers in the past. But it is good that the company has quantified it this time and that gives a little bit of comfort in profitability," said a senior IT sector analyst with a brokerage firm. The company, however, said it had no plans for layoffs. "There is no planned layoff. We have performance reviews and people who are not performing are asked to leave. This is normal, there is no targeted layoff," chief operating officer UB Pravin Rao said.On October 11, Rao told analysts that the attrition in the second quarter for tech services — both voluntary and involuntary — was about 19.4%. "If you look at voluntary alone it is about 18%," he said.Voluntary attrition is when people leave the firm for other opportunities, while involuntary is forced.
