North Korea says it has "no wish to sit with South Korean officials again," state news agency KCNA reported a day after South Korean President Moon Jae-in pledged to achieve unification on the Korean Peninsula by 2045 https://t.co/W5BJvzvTn9
Al-Qaeda has released embarrassing outtakes from an Islamic State propaganda video of fighters in Yemen, in an attempt to undermine its bitter rival.
The blooper reel, released by Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula's Hidayah Media Productions, shows a kneeling militant trying to renew his pledge of allegiance to Isil leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi but repeatedly being interrupted by a squawking bird in the tree above.
The jihadi, identified as Abu Muhammad al-Adeni, appears to be distracted by the chirping, causing him to forget his lines.
He takes out notes from his pocket, while another fighter can be heard telling him to "stay calm, keep cool".
The media group does not reveal how it got hold of the unedited version of the video, but it could have been handed over by an Isil defector or taken from a captured base.

President Moon Jae-in plans joint Olympics with North Korea in 2032 and calls on Japan to contemplate its wartime past
South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, has vowed to achieve the unification of the Korean peninsula by 2045, a century after the end of the second world war.
In a speech to mark the 74th anniversary on Thursday of Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 rule, Moon also said South Korea would "gladly join" hands with its former colonial ruler to defuse an escalating trade dispute whose roots lie in the country's bitter wartime history.

Regime says it is 'senseless' for Seoul to hope for talks while it continues joint military drills with US
North Korea launched at least two projectiles into the sea on Friday, South Korea's military said, shortly after Pyongyang described South Korea's president as "impudent" and vowed that inter-Korean talks were over.
Pyongyang said it was "senseless" for Seoul to hope for a resumption of inter-Korean dialogue while it continued its military exercises with the US.
On Saturday, the regime fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, the fifth round of launches in less than three weeks.
China has manipulated the context of images and videos to undermine the protesters
When a projectile struck a Hong Kong woman in the eye this week as protesters clashed with the police, China responded quickly.
Its state television network reported that the woman had been injured not by one of the police's beanbag rounds, but by a protester.
The network's website went further: it posted what it said was a photo of the woman counting out cash on a Hong Kong sidewalk – insinuating, as Chinese reports have claimed before, that the protesters are merely paid provocateurs.
The assertion was more than just spin or fake news. The Communist Party exerts overwhelming control over media content inside China's so-called Great Firewall.
It is now using it as a cudgel in an information war over the Hong Kong protests.
WNU Editor: The Chinese are masters when it comes to using disinformation and propaganda. China's 'Great Firewall' insures that an opposing view can never be introduced, and we are seeing it right now in real time when it comes to Hong Kong (see above video)..
Whoever takes over from Coats permanently could serve as a needed voice of clarity about America's biggest challenges—or see the intelligence community further sidelined.
President Donald Trump's feud with his intelligence agencies has flared ever since he took office already chafing about their conclusion on Russian electoral interference. The latest casualty: Dan Coats, who today leaves his post as director of national intelligence, with his deputy, Sue Gordon, reluctantly following him out the door. Joe Maguire now steps in as acting director, and whoever takes over the spot permanently could be, for good or ill, an unusually consequential figure—precisely because of the president's hostility.

Donald Trump tweets as Xi Jinping lines up his military tanks and Hong Kong protesters wave American flags and sing the U.S. national anthem: Our view
Chinese President Xi Jinping faces an ominous choice. He can abide by China's "one country, two systems" treaty obligation, made in 1997, that gives Hong Kong 50 years of crucial and autonomous rights, including free speech and peaceful assembly.
Or Xi can crush the growing dissent among Hong Kong's freedom-loving people and send in thousands of military troops amassed outside the city, reminding the world of the bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989 and reinforcing the perception that, for all of its economic progress, China remains just another dictatorship.
BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China on Thursday vowed to counter the latest U.S. tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese goods but called on the United States to meet it halfway on a potential trade deal, as U.S. President Donald Trump said any pact would have to be on America's terms.
The Chinese finance ministry said in a statement that Washington's tariffs, set to start next month, violated a consensus reached between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at a June summit in Japan to resolve their disputes via negotiation.
In a separate statement, China's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said, "We hope the U.S. will meet China halfway, a
A staggering 15 to 19 percent of Venezuela's total population has left the country amid an economic and political crisis with no clear end in sight, a new survey estimates. And those numbers are likely to increase in coming months and years if there are not profound changes in the South American country.
A recent poll by the Caracas-based think tank, Consultores 21, found that 48 percent of all families had an average of 1.6 members living abroad. Based on those numbers, the organization estimates that anywhere from 4.7 million to 6 million of the nation's 31.8 million people are now living abroad.
OPEC is dead, long live OPEC+. Arguably the collaboration between the world's two largest exporters of oil, Russia and Saudi Arabia, is a significant development caused by and comparable to the shale revolution in the U.S.
Desperate times require desperate measures. A decade ago, a partnership between Moscow and Riyadh would have seemed impossible due to contradicting interests. Recent developments have somewhat aligned the countries into what has been dubbed OPEC+.
WNU Editor: I concur with the above analysis. Russia is more focus on gaining market share, not cutting back on production. Saudi Arabia is more focused on price, because they need high prices to sustain their budgetary needs. My prediction. Unless Saudi Arabia decides to ramp up production, thereby decreasing prices, there is going to be no agreement on production cuts.
High-tech radar from Mystery Chinese warship that fell onto Taiwan freighter during collision could reveal its identity
The Coast Guard in a press release issued today denied that any such "light detection and ranging radar (Lidar)" or "gun fire-control radar" had been found on the Yutai No. 1.
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- As more details emerge of the collision between a Taiwanese freighter and a mysterious Chinese warship near Kinmen, it appears that secret, high-technology radar equipment had fallen off the Chinese vessel and onto the Taiwanese ship, providing clues as to what kind of ship it really was.
At 8 p.m. on July 31, the Yutai No. 1 was slammed into by an unidentified Chinese warship 19.5 miles southeast of Liaoluo Port in Kinmen. The Taiwanese ship sustained damage, but none of its crew were injured, according to the report.
WNU Editor: I have doubts that this happened. If this Chinese warship had its radar system fall onto the deck of a Taiwanese freighter, that Taiwanese freighter would never have been permitted to escape.
There are reasons why the paramilitary troops of the Peoples Armed Police have not yet rolled across the border crossing at Shenzhen to crush the protests in Hong Kong. Chiefly because China needs Hong Kong.
China doesn't need the former Crown colony quite as much as it did back in 1997 when Hong Kong switched from British rule. But the Special Administrative Region remains a valuable conduit for Beijing. One the ruling Communist Party cannot risk undermining.
In the past four decades, China has emerged as the world's second-biggest economy and an integral part of the global financial system. That rise was facilitated by Hong Kong.
WNU Editor: This is a good explanation on why Hong Kong is important to Beijing, and why sending in the para-military forces is the last thing that President Xi wants to do. From Beijing's perspective. As long as the Hong Kong government remains in power, and the police do their job to contain the protests, the Chinese government will bide their time and hope that the protests will eventually burn out. But if the situation deteriorates to a point where the Hong Kong government has collapsed and the police desert their posts, Beijing has made it very clear that the Chinese military will be moving in ASAP.
Update: I live in Montreal, and a few years ago we had protests and riots on a daily basis over university tuition costs and social grievences. These protests and riots lasted for almost a year before they burned themselves out. My contacts in China are telling me that they are hoping for the same thing with these protests. That in the next month or two the situation will return to normal. But my gut is telling me no. These protesters are very motivated, and they do not strike me as a group that will give up anytime soon.
HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong braced on Thursday for more mass demonstrations through the weekend, as China again warned against foreign interference in the city's escalating crisis and as mainland paramilitary forces conducted exercises just across the border.
Western governments, including the United States, have stepped up calls for restraint, following ugly and chaotic scenes at the city's airport this week, which forced the cancellation of nearly 1,000 flights and saw protesters set upon two men they suspected of being government sympathizers.
The airport, one of the world's busiest, was returning to normal but under tight security after thousands of protesters had jammed its halls on Monday and Tuesday nights, part of a protest movement Beijing has likened to terrorism.

New Delhi -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday justified his government's move to revoke Kashmir's semi-autonomous status as the picturesque Himalayan valley remained under a strict government lockdown for the 11th day. Modi said "a new approach was needed" on the territory, ownership over which has long been disputed with neighboring Pakistan, as efforts by Indian governments over the past 70 years "did not bear results."
The Indian leader did not address in his speech the mounting tension between his nation and Pakistan fuelled by his move in Kashmir, which ramped-up further Thursday with cross-border fire by the opposing military forces reportedly leaving eight people dead.

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan unveiled its largest defense spending increase in more than a decade on Thursday amid rising military tensions with its giant neighbor China, which considers the self-ruled island its own and has not renounced the use of force against it.
President Tsai Ing-wen's cabinet signed off on an 8.3% increase in military spending for the year starting January to T$411.3 billion ($13.11 billion), its largest yearly gain since 2008, according to Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics.
If approved by lawmakers, which is likely given the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's control of parliament, it will be the highest since records started in 2001, data from the statistics agency show.
A Chinese survey ship has returned to Vietnam's territorial waters in the South China Sea, according to media reports, days after leaving the disputed Spratly Islands, where it had been involved in a nearly month-long standoff with Vietnamese ships that prompted rare protests in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The Haiyang Dizhi 8, a ship operated by the China Geological Survey, had in July conducted a 12-day survey of waters near the Spratlys, with Chinese Coast Guard ships following in support.
At one point, China's survey intruded into an offshore oil block in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off of the Spratlys' westernmost reef, known as Vanguard Bank, leading to standoff near the area that touched off protests in front of the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi.
(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. added four Chinese nuclear entities to a trade blacklist, accusing them of helping to acquire advanced U.S. technology for military use in China.
China General Nuclear Power Group and its subsidiaries China General Nuclear Power Corp., or CGNPC, China Nuclear Power Technology Research Institute Co., and Suzhou Nuclear Power Research Institute Co. were added to the so-called Entity List, according to a Federal Register notice published Wednesday.
The move comes after a crackdown on U.S. exports of civilian nuclear components and materials in recent years. In 2016 the Department of Justice accused China General Nuclear Power, the country's largest nuclear group, of an espionage plot dating back to the 1990s to steal US technology. The Pentagon has also warned over China's plans to introduce floating nuclear power plants on disputed islands and reefs in the South China Sea.
WNU Editor: You would think that these Chinese nuclear companies with their close ties to the Chinese military would have been blacklisted years ago. But nope. It is only happening now.

A Russian pilot has been hailed as a hero after he successfully crash-landed a passenger plane in a cornfield after birds were sucked into both engines, causing them to fail.
The Ural Airlines A321 plane was taking off from Moscow's Zhukovsky airport on Thursday morning bound for Crimea when the birds flew across the runway, causing one engine to burst into flames and the other to stop.
Pilot Damir Yusupov, 41, radioed the airport asking to make an emergency landing but was forced to ditch into a cornfield a mile away after realising he was not going to make it.
Yusupov brought the plane down with no power in either engine and with the landing gear retracted.

Carriers are complicated and expensive things to build.
Recent news out of China suggests that the country is experiencing technical problems with its first homemade aircraft carrier. This points to an ongoing issue for countries that have elected to go the aircraft carrier route: carriers are really, really complicated and expensive things to build.
The first purpose-built aircraft carrier was the Royal Navy's HMS Hermes. Laid down in 1918 and commissioned in 1926, it was the first carrier built from the ground up as a carrier and not converted from another type of ship for the aviation role. At six years, it had an unusually long development period for a 1920s warship.

(SEOUL, South Korea) — North Korea on Friday bluntly criticized South Korean President Moon Jae-in for continuing to hold military exercises with the U.S. and over his rosy comments on inter-Korean diplomacy, and said Pyongyang has no current plans to talk with Seoul.
The statement by an unidentified government spokesman came hours before South Korea’s military detected two projectiles North Korea fired into the sea to extend a torrid streak of weapons display that’s apparently aimed at pressuring Washington and Seoul over their joint drills and slow nuclear negotiations.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the projectiles launched from the North’s eastern coast flew about 230 kilometers (143 miles) on an apogee of 30 kilometers (18 miles) before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The U.S. and South Korean militaries were analyzing the launches but didn’t immediately say whether the weapons were ballistic missiles or rocket artillery.
The North has ignored South Korean calls for dialogue recently and is seen as trying to force Seoul to make stronger efforts to coax major concessions from Washington on its behalf.
Moon, in a televised speech on Thursday, said a momentum for dialogue remains alive despite the series of “worrying actions taken by North Korea recently.” He called for Pyongyang to choose “economic prosperity over its nuclear program.”
The spokesperson of the North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country said Moon’s comments would make a “boiled head of a cow (fall into) a side-splitting laughter.”
“A sure thing is that the (South) Korean chief executive is (such a) funny man as he just reads what was written by his juniors,” the statement said, while avoiding calling Moon by his name.
The statement also criticized South Korea’s recent acquisition of advanced U.S.-made fighter jets and said it would be “senseless” for Moon to believe that inter-Korean dialogue will automatically begin after the end of the ongoing U.S.-South Korean drills.
“We have nothing to (talk about) any more with (South) Korean authorities nor have any (plans) to sit with them again,” the statement said.
The North had recently said it would talk only with Washington and not Seoul, and that inter-Korean dialogue won’t resume unless the South offers a “plausible excuse” on why it keeps hosting military drills with the United States. Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, criticized the North Korean statement, saying it wouldn’t help efforts to improve relations.
Pyongyang has also been demanding that Seoul turn away from Washington and restart inter-Korean economic projects held back by U.S.-led sanctions against the North.
The United States has so far rejected North Korea’s demands for sanctions relief in exchange for piecemeal deals toward partially surrendering its nuclear capabilities and urged Pyongyang to commit to completely relinquishing its nuclear and missile program.
Friday’s launches were North Korea’s sixth round of tests since late July, when it stepped up its weapons demonstrations while expressing frustration over stalemated nuclear negotiations with the United States as well as the U.S.-South Korean drills that the North sees as an invasion rehearsal.
South Korea’s presidential office said national security adviser Chung Eui-yong presided over an emergency National Security Council meeting and Moon was briefed on the launches. The Blue House called for the North to stop launches that risk raising military tensions on the peninsula.
The weapons the North tested in recent weeks included a new rocket artillery system and what security analysts say are two new short-range mobile ballistic missile systems that would potentially expand its ability to strike targets throughout South Korea, including U.S. bases there.
Experts say President Donald Trump’s downplaying of the North’s launches allowed the country more room to intensify its testing activity and advance its short-range weaponry while it seeks to build leverage ahead of a possible resumption of negotiations, which could happen sometime after the end of the allied drills later this month.
Japan’s Defense Ministry said the North Korean projectiles did not reach the country’s territorial waters or its exclusive economic zone. The White House said it was aware of reports of the launches and was consulting with Seoul and Tokyo.
(TOKYO) — Tokyo’s summer heat has forced an Olympic women’s triathlon qualifying event to be shortened because of high temperatures that are likely to impact next year’s games.
The International Triathlon Union reduced the running portion of the triathlon from 10 kilometers to 5 kilometers on Thursday because temperatures fell within what it termed “extreme levels.” “There was full consensus on all parties for the decision of the ITU medical delegate and ITU technical delegates to shorten the run distance to 5km, considering the athletes’ health,” the ITU said in a statement.
Jess Learmonth and Georgia Taylor-Brown of Britain were disqualified for trying to intentionally tie in first place.
The event was an Olympic qualifier for some countries.
Tokyo’s hot and humid summers are a major worry for organizers of next year’s Olympics, which open July 24. Temperatures routinely hover around 32C (90F), which was the level Thursday with a forecast 36C (97F) on Saturday. The race began at 7:30 a.m local time.
This was not a problem during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, which were held in October. The schedule and demands of television force the midsummer schedule this time.
“The ITU informed Tokyo 2020 that a comprehensive review is necessary soon after the competitions this week,” Tokyo organizing committee’s Masa Takaya said. “In this respect, we will continue to work closely together with the team.”
The governing body, the ITU, described water quality conditions at the venue as “very good” in Tokyo Bay. But swimmers at a recent distance swim event, held at the same venue for triathlon, complained of foul smelling water.
Dirty water was a major problem at the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, with open-water venues testing high for viruses and bacteria because much of Rio does not have a functioning sanitation system.
“There are no concerns at all about the water quality in Odaiba Bay,” the ITU said in a statement. The water temperature, however, was very warm on Thursday. The ITU reported it at 30.3C (86.5F).
(LONDON) — A British judge has sentenced a lookalike of “Friends” actor David Schwimmer to nine months in prison for theft and fraud.
Judge Sara Dodd sentenced Abdulah Husseni on Thursday for using a stolen bank card to make or attempt to make fraudulent purchases at four shops in Blackpool, northwest England, last year. He was convicted of one count of theft and four counts of fraud by false representation.
Husseni’s image became famous after police published surveillance-camera footage of a man carrying a carton of cans from a restaurant in Blackpool. Social media users noted a strong similarity to Schwimmer’s character Ross Geller in the TV show.

The actor then posted a video on Twitter showing him scuttling furtively through a U.S. convenience store clutching a carton of beer. Schwimmer wrote: “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me.”
July 2019 was the hottest July and the hottest month on record globally since temperature records began in a year of many record-breaking temperatures as heat waves hit many parts of the world.
This trend of high temperatures and heatwaves looks set to continue. Scientists say that as long as the world continues to emit greenhouse gases at the current rates, climate change related impacts will continue to be felt.
“If you put all of the Julys for the last 20 or 40 or 100 years, there’s a clear trend upward. That’s the concern — that long-term trend. Not a single day or single month in particular,” says Michael Allen, a climate scientist at Old Dominion University.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the figures Thursday, confirming that worldwide, July was 1.71 degrees Fahrenheit (.95 degrees Celsius) warmer than the average of 56.9 degrees Fahrenheit. The record-setting July follows the hottest June on record, rising .71 degrees Fahrenheit (0.95 Celsius) above the average temperature for that month.
Regions across the world experienced record-breaking temperatures; the continent of Africa experienced its hottest month on record, and countries across Europe – including France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, and Luxembourg – experienced the hottest days in their nations’ history.
Announcing the figures, Deke Arndt of NOAA said that the land temperature was the second hottest on record, measured at 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average for July, while the ocean was the warmest on record for July, at around 1.5 degree Fahrenheit warmer than the 20th century average.
However, climate scientists say that while the high temperatures were troubling, the real problem is that they’re part of a larger pattern. Last month was the 43rd July in a row – and the 415th consecutive month – with temperatures about the 20th century average.
What’s causing the record-high temperatures?
According to NOAA, there are three big reasons why the global temperature was so hot.
First, if the global temperature is going to set a record, it’s mostly going to be in July, which worldwide is the hottest month of the year.
Second- there’s a normal amount of variability in the weather. The most significant factor was that earlier this year, El Niño warm weather conditions formed on the Pacific, causing warmer-than-average weather conditions.
However, NOAA and climate scientists agree that one of the most important reasons that the world is within striking distance of setting global temperatures is climate change. Arndt says that the records are “almost entirely due to climate change.”
NOAA scientists have warned rising greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere impacts the climate.
“Greenhouse gas pollution traps heat in the atmosphere, which has consequences,” James Butler, director of NOAA’s Global Monitoring Division, said in May. “There’s no getting around it — burning fossil fuels is changing the course of our planet’s future. How society deals with that will be a major challenge in coming decades.”
Where have the high temperatures have the biggest impact?
Hot temperatures have a particularly grave impact on Arctic regions, which can have serious global consequences.
The hot temperatures had a particularly grave impact on sea ice. The average sea ice on the Arctic was at a record low, dropping to 19.8% below average- breaking the previous historic low set in July 2012.
Twila Moon, a research scientist from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, tells TIME that while ice reflects the sun, but when it melts, the sun shines on dark land or water, which absorbs more heat.
When land ice melts, it also contributes to rising ocean levels, which can cause coastal erosion, inland flooding and contamination of freshwater.
“Changes in the Arctic and Antarctic, which feel very far away, actually are directly connected with the kinds of impacts that we can see here – with rising sea levels, with changing characters of storms,” Moon says.
In the United States, many of these impacts are visible in Alaska. This July was “easily” the state’s hottest month on record, according to Rick Thoman of the International Arctic Research Center. Many places experienced their hottest days on record; the city of Anchorage experienced its first 90 degree day.
Researchers determined that was no sea ice within 125 miles of the Alaskan coast, and there were reports of malnourished animals- including birds, seals, and walrus- washing up in the western part of the state.
Moon argues that a storm like Hurricane Barry – which caused record rainfall in Arkansas – may have been worsened by climate change. “Any storm that passes through is going to have a larger impact to create greater flooding and more extensive impacts than it could before,” Moon says.
What impact are the record-high temperatures having on cities?
The hot temperatures had various impacts in cities around the world.
Gary Chatelain, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said that heat waves can have negative health effects. “You are more likely to develop a heat illness quicker in this type of weather, when it’s really humid and hot,” Chatelain said.
Urban areas around the world experienced record temperatures this summer. After France experienced record temperatures in late June, about 4,000 schools closed and traffic restrictions were put in place to help the country cope with pollution, according to French news.
City residents in Russia’s Siberia region and in Anchorage, Alaska have also been forced to cope with plumes of smoke from major wildfires. In Russia, more than 17 million acres were scorched over two months. In Alaska, 2.4 million acres have burned.
Thoman said that while a source of ignition — such as a lightning strike — is necessary to start a wildfire, warm temperatures also play a role.
“In the sub-Arctic and the boreal forest, temperatures are really important,” Thoman said. “You would not expect, for instance, to get a big wildfire season when temperatures are below normal.”
Conspiracy theories, both powerful and enduring, can wreak havoc on society. In recent years, fringe ideas prompted a gunman to storm a Washington, D.C. pizzeria and may have motivated another to fatally shoot 11 worshippers inside a Pittsburgh synagogue. They are also largely to blame for a worldwide surge in measles cases that has sickened more people in the U.S. in the first half of 2019 than in any full year since 1994.
Now, the FBI says conspiracy theories “very likely” inspire domestic terrorists to commit criminal and sometimes violent acts and “very likely will emerge, spread and evolve” on internet platforms, according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by Yahoo News. The May 30 document from the FBI’s Phoenix field office—the first of its kind to examine the threat of conspiracy-driven extremists—also says the 2020 presidential election will likely fuel conspiracy theories, potentially motivating domestic extremists who subscribe to them.
“It’s increasingly becoming clear that lots and lots of people believe in them, and they have negative outcomes,” says Viren Swami, a social psychology professor at Anglia Ruskin University in the U.K., who has published several studies on conspiracy theories.
Millions of people all over the world—including, by one estimate, half of the U.S. population—believe in conspiracy theories. Today, that figure may be even higher, according to political scientists and psychologists who study the phenomenon. Since researchers have not tracked these trends over time, it’s difficult to determine whether the number of people who believe in conspiracy theories has risen over the years. But experts, and now the FBI, argue an average person’s exposure to them has certainly increased, in large part because conspiracy theories are now more easily disseminated on social media.
Among the most prominent peddlers of misinformation on social media, experts say, is President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly promoted falsehoods, using his personal Twitter account more than 100 times to voice doubts about the negative effects of climate change, contradicting an overwhelming consensus among scientists. Trump, who has more than 63 million Twitter followers, also spent years pushing the false narrative that former President Barack Obama was not born in America.
More recently, following Jeffrey Epstein’s apparent suicide in federal jail, Trump retweeted an uncorroborated theory that suggested the death of the well-connected financier, who was charged with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy, was suspicious and somehow linked to former President Bill Clinton. When asked by reporters Tuesday whether he thinks the conspiracy theory he promoted is true, Trump said he has “no idea” but added that Clinton was a “very good friend” of Epstein who has been on Epstein’s private plane and perhaps to Epstein’s private Caribbean island, which locals reportedly dubbed “Pedophile Island.” Clinton spokesman Angel Urena called the claim “ridiculous and of course not true.”

TRUMP: "I have no idea. I know he was on his plane 27 times…the question you have to ask is, did Bill Clinton go to the island?…I was never there…if you find that out, you're going to know a lot." pic.twitter.com/2okvjaFv2w
“The chief conspiratorialist of the last 10 years is now the President of the United States,” says Harvard University researcher Joseph Vitriol, who studies political psychology. “Because of that, what we might be seeing is increased influence and pervasiveness of these beliefs.”
In 2016, when a gunman barged into the Washington, D.C. pizzeria, he had falsely believed children were trapped in a sex-trafficking ring led by Hillary Clinton—a fringe idea propagated by an anonymous user known as “Q,” who favors Trump. Thousands of people, including the actor Roseanne Barr, believe or acknowledge Q’s uncorroborated musings, which started on the controversial message board 4chan.
Platforms like YouTube and Facebook have also given life to conspiracy theories and allowed many to go viral. The children’s arcade chain Chuck E. Cheese was pressured to address and debunk an allegation that it resold leftover pizza slices in February after a YouTube star made the claim in a video, which now has more than 35 million views. The theory was mostly harmless but highlights how YouTube, which boasts more than 1 billion users, is part of the problem.
“The problem with condemning conspiracy theories is that it plays into the conspiracy theorist’s mind.”Critics argue the company’s obscure recommendation algorithm system—which chooses and automatically plays the user’s next video—often leads viewers down rabbit holes, pushing them toward questionable content they might not discover on their own. “It used to be a lot harder for things to go viral,” says Micah Schaffer, a technology policy consultant who crafted YouTube’s first policies when he worked for the company between 2006 and 2009. “Now, without any human intervention, you could have a machine that says a lot of people are watching this and put it on blast to a mass audience.”
The recommendation algorithms have been successful in keeping viewers on the site and luring them to watch more videos. Over 70% of the time people spend on YouTube is driven by recommendations, YouTube’s chief product officer Neal Mohan wrote in a 2018 Variety op-ed. And about 80% of YouTube users in the U.S. at least occasionally watch the videos suggested by the platform’s recommendation algorithm, a November 2018 Pew Research Center survey found.
In January, YouTube announced it would gradually start “reducing recommendations of borderline content and content that could misinform users in harmful ways.” Conspiracy theories were part of the targeted content, including “videos promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11.” In June, YouTube said the number of views the harmful content gets from recommendations has dropped by over 50% in the U.S.
Facebook faced its own pressures to act in March after an Ohio teenager, who got vaccinated against his mother’s wishes, testified about the dangers of misinformation during a widely viewed Senate hearing. Ethan Lindenberger, 18, told lawmakers that his mother, an anti-vaccine advocate, mostly relied on Facebook for her information. Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000, and public health officials have debunked the claim that vaccinations lead to autism. Yet since January, more than 1,180 measles cases have been confirmed in 30 states, the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. in 25 years, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Conspiracy theories are effective at doing the things that they do,” says Mike Wood, a lecturer at England’s University of Winchester, who specializes in the psychology of conspiracy theories. “They motivate people to take actions—to vote or to not vote, to vaccinate their kids or not to vaccinate their kids, to do all of these things that are important.”
Two days after the hearing, Facebook said it would do more to mute anti-vaxxers and scrub related ads. The company has also banned high-profile propagators of conspiracy theories, including Alex Jones, saying they promote or engage in violence or hate.
Vitriol says conspiracy theories are “tremendously problematic” because they undermine trust in institutions and change perceptions of what is real. “The further we deviate from an evidence-based understanding of reality, the less likely we’re able to deal with it,” he says.
So what is the best way to deal with conspiracy theorists, especially those who are not easily dissuaded? Researchers call it the million-dollar question. The first step is to avoid belittling them, Swami says. Diminishing deeply rooted beliefs may backfire, fueling propagators and their followers to shun mainstream explanations even more. “The problem with condemning conspiracy theories is that it plays into the conspiracy theorist’s mind,” he says. “It would entrench their beliefs.”
Instead, experts say it’s important to understand the science behind their mentality and the environment that fuels it. Conspiracy theories thrive in polarizing political climates, researchers say. According to Swami, they spring up when people who feel politically disenfranchised seek ways to explain what’s happening in the world. “Conspiracy theories don’t just emerge in a vacuum,” he says. “It simplifies events and gives you a sense of control of your life again.”
It may not always make sense for truth seekers to confront all conspiratorialists with factual evidence when trying to change their minds. (A 2017 study found people who believe in conspiracy theories may just simply want to believe them.) But it’s still a worthwhile strategy, experts say. At least two experimental studies have shown that it works. According to the authors of a 2016 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, pointing out the logistical inconsistencies of conspiracy theories helped discredit them, especially if the person presenting the rational counter argument was perceived to be intelligent and competent.
The bottom line, experts say, is that ignoring conspiracy theories, over the longstanding fear of inflaming or promoting the ideas, is no longer an option. “The risk of doing nothing is that people who know nothing about the issue may adopt the conspiratorial account because there’s no alternative account,” Vitriol says. “If this was just a small portion of the general public in the darkest depths of the internet, perhaps you get could get away with not doing anything. But it’s too mainstream now.”
“It’s too consequential for us not to deal with it,” Vitriol adds.
(MOSCOW) — A Russian pilot was being hailed as a hero Thursday for safely landing his passenger jet in a corn field after it collided with a flock of gulls seconds after takeoff, causing both engines to malfunction. While dozens of people on the plane sought medical assistance, only one was hospitalized.
The quick thinking of the captain, 41-year old Damir Yusupov, drew comparisons to the 2009 “miracle on the Hudson,” when Capt. Chesley Sullenberger safely ditched his plane in New York’s Hudson River after a bird strike disabled his engines.
Russian television stations showed passengers standing in head-high corn next to the plane, hugging Yusupov and thanking him for saving their lives.
“It was quite a feat to keep the plane from stalling and quickly find a place to land,” Viktor Zabolotsky, a former test pilot, said in televised remarks.
The Ural Airlines A321 was carrying 226 passengers and a crew of seven as it took off Thursday from Moscow’s Zhukovsky Airport en route for Simferopol in Crimea.
Russia’s Rosaviatsiya state aviation agency chief Alexander Neradko told reporters that the crew “made the only right decision” to land the fully loaded plane immediately with its wheels up after both of its engines malfunctioned.
“The crew has shown courage and professionalism and deserve the highest state awards,” he said, adding that the plane was fully loaded with 16 tons of fuel. “Just imagine what the consequences would be if the crew didn’t make the correct decision.”
The airline said Yusupov, the son of a helicopter pilot, is an experienced pilot who has logged over 3,000 flight hours. Yusupov worked as a lawyer before he changed course and joined a flight school when he was 32. A father of four, he has flown with Ural Airlines since his graduation in 2013. He became a captain last year.
Yusupov’s wife told Rossiya state television from their home in Yekaterinburg that he called her after landing before she had heard about the emergency.
“He called me and said: ‘Everything is fine, everyone is alive,'” she said. “I asked what was it, and he said that birds hit the engine and we landed in a field. I was horrified and in panic and burst into tears.”
Russian officials immediately rushed to shower the pilot and crew with praise. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, hailed the pilots as “heroes” and said they will receive state awards. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev opened a session of Cabinet by praising the crew and asking the transport minister to explain what happened.
The Emergencies Ministry said that 74 people asked for medical assistance after the incident. Health authorities said 23 people, including five children, were taken to the hospital, but all but one were released following check-ups.
Bird strikes on planes occur regularly around the world even though airports use bird distress signals, air cannons and other means to chase birds away from runways. Plane engines are designed to withstand occasional bird strikes but a collision with a flock of birds can result in serious trouble.
It’s rare for bird strikes to knock out both engines but pilots do prepare for this, said John Hansman, an aeronautics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He said the Ural Airlines pilot probably knew in advance that a farm field was near the airport.
With both engines down, the pilot is flying what essentially is a glider but still has control of the airplane, Hansman said. His toughest decision is where to try to land.
“When you’re in a glider, you’ve got a certain amount of altitude,” he said. “You have to make the judgment what’s the best place I can fly with the amount of energy I have left because I’m not getting any more from the engine.”
Some Russian media reports suggested the birds could have been drawn to Zhukovsky Airport by an unauthorized garbage dump nearby, but there was no immediate confirmation of the claim.
On Jan. 15, 2009, a US Airways Airbus A320 hit a flock of geese after taking off from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport and both of its engines shut down. The crew made an emergency landing in the Hudson River along midtown Manhattan and all 155 people aboard survived despite landing in very cold water.
The so-called “miracle on the Hudson” was immortalized in the Hollywood movie “Sully,” based on the autobiography of Sullenberger and starring Tom Hanks.
(JERUSALEM) — Israel said Thursday that it will bar two Democratic congresswomen from entering the country ahead of a planned visit over their support for a Palestinian-led boycott movement, a decision announced shortly after President Donald Trump tweeted that it would “show great weakness” to allow them in.
The move to bar Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota from visiting appeared to be unprecedented. It marked a deep foray by Israel into America’s bitterly polarized politics and a sharp escalation of Israel’s campaign against the international boycott movement.
The two newly-elected Muslim members of Congress are outspoken critics of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and have repeatedly sparred with Trump over a range of issues. Tlaib’s family immigrated to the United States from the West Bank, where she still has close relatives.
They had planned to visit Jerusalem and the West Bank on a tour organized by a Palestinian organization aimed at highlighting the plight of the Palestinians. It was not immediately clear if they had planned to meet with Israeli officials, and spokespeople for the two congresswomen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is “open to critics and criticism,” except for those who advocate boycotts against it.
“Congresswomen Tlaib and Omar are leading activists in promoting the legislation of boycotts against Israel in the American Congress,” Netanyahu charged. He said their itinerary “revealed that they planned a visit whose sole objective is to strengthen the boycott against us and deny Israel’s legitimacy.”
Omar denounced the decision as “an affront” and “an insult to democratic values.”
“This is not a surprise given the public positions of Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has consistently resisted peace efforts, restricted the freedom of movement of Palestinians, limited public knowledge of the brutal realities of the occupation and aligned himself with Islamophobes like Donald Trump,” Omar said in a statement.
Shortly before the decision was announced, Trump had tweeted that “it would show great weakness” if Israel allowed them to visit. “They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds.” He went on to call the two congresswomen “a disgrace.”
The U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, endorsed the decision after it was made, saying Israel “has every right to protect its borders” against promoters of boycotts “in the same manner as it would bar entrants with more conventional weapons.”
Trump’s decision to urge a foreign country to deny entry to elected U.S. officials was a striking departure from the long-held practice of politicians from both parties of leaving their disputes at the water’s edge.
Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. Congress denounced Israel’s decision.
Top ranking Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York said it was a sign of weakness instead of strength and “will only hurt the U.S.-Israeli relationship and support for Israel in America.” A close freshman colleague of the two lawmakers, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, said Israel’s move is “bigoted, short sighted and cruel.”
Israel has sought to combat the BDS movement, which advocates boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israeli businesses, universities and cultural institutions. The country passed a law permitting a ban on entry to any activist who “knowingly issues a call for boycotting Israel.”
Last month, Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer had said Israel would not deny entry to any member of Congress.
The interior ministry said in statement Thursday that “the state of Israel respects the American Congress, in the framework of the close alliance between the two countries, but it’s unacceptable to allow the entrance to the country of those who wish to harm the state of Israel, especially during their visit.”
Israel said it would consider any request from Tlaib to visit relatives on humanitarian grounds.
Supporters of the boycott movement say it is a non-violent way to protest Israeli policies and call for Palestinian rights. Critics say the boycott movement aims to delegitimize Israel and ultimately erase it from the map, replacing it with a binational state.
Israel often hosts delegations of U.S. representatives and senators, who usually meet with senior Israeli officials as well as Palestinian officials in the occupied West Bank. Israel controls entry and exit points to the West Bank, which it seized along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians seek these territories for their future state.
MIFTAH, the Palestinian organization that was set to host Tlaib and Omar in the West Bank, issued a statement saying that Israel’s decision was “an affront to the American people and their representatives” and “an assault on the Palestinian people’s right to reach out to decision-makers and other actors from around the world.”
The move could further sharpen divisions among Democrats over Israel ahead of the 2020 elections. Republicans have amplified the views of left-wing Democrats like Tlaib and Omar to present the party as deeply divided and at odds with Israel. Democratic leaders have pushed back, reiterating the party’s strong support for Israel, in part to protect representatives from more conservative districts.
In July, the Democratic-led House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution against the BDS movement.
Tlaib and Omar have also been the target of repeated attacks by President Donald Trump in recent months, including a series of racist tweets on July 14 in which he said they should “go back” to the “broken” countries they came from. Both are U.S. citizens and Tlaib was born in the United States. The two are members of the so-called “Squad” of newly-elected left-wing Democrats, along with Pressley and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
Dan Shapiro, U.S. ambassador to Israel under President Barack Obama, said that he knew of “no such precedent” for Israel barring an elected American official from entering the country, calling the decision “short-sighted.”
“There’s no reason to prevent members of Congress, including critical ones, from coming, seeing and learning, offering them every possible briefing,” Shapiro said. “By refusing them entry, it will only fuel the very things that Israel claims to be unhappy about” when it comes to calls for boycotts.
Arthur Lenk, formerly Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, said barring Omar and Tlaib “would be sinking us deeper into U.S. domestic political quagmire.”
Israeli lawmaker Ayman Odeh, leader of the Joint List of Arab parties, also criticized the move, writing that “Israel has always banned Palestinians from their land and separated us from other Palestinians, but this time the Palestinian is a U.S. Congresswoman.”
(MADRID) — Gibraltar on Thursday allowed a detained Iranian supertanker to leave the British overseas territory after a last-minute U.S. attempt to seize the vessel, potentially defusing tensions between London and Tehran as a British-flagged tanker remains held by the Islamic Republic.
The release of the Grace 1 comes after the U.S. under President Donald Trump pulled out of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers over a year ago, setting in motion a growing confrontation between Tehran and the West over its atomic program. In past weeks, the Persian Gulf region has seen six attacks on oil tankers that the U.S. has blamed on Iran and the downing of a U.S. surveillance drone by Iranian forces. Iran has denied being behind the tanker attacks, though it has seized other tankers.
The Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper reported there was no U.S. application before the court when a hearing on the Grace 1 resumed Thursday afternoon, quoting the court’s chief justice, Anthony Dudley. That allowed the ship to be freed.
That’s a stark change from a morning hearing, which saw Gibraltar say the Justice Department sought to seize the vessel “on a number of allegations.”
Dudley said that were it not for the U.S. move, “the ship would have sailed,” the Chronicle reported.
The Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment.
Britain’s Foreign Office said in a statement that the “investigations conducted around the Grace 1 are a matter for the government of Gibraltar” and that it couldn’t comment further.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Downing Street office said Iran was discussed during the U.K. leader’s meeting with Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton earlier in the week, though no details were released on the talks.
The Grace 1, carrying 2.1 million barrels of Iranian crude, was seized last month in a British Royal Navy operation off Gibraltar. The vessel was suspected of violating European Union sanctions on Syria, namely its Banyas refinery, where the Grace 1’s cargo was allegedly headed, according to authorities in Gibraltar. Iran called the seizure an “act of piracy.”
Shortly after the detention of the Grace 1, Iran seized the British-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero, which remains held by the Islamic Republic. Analysts had said the release of the Grace 1 by Gibraltar could see the Stena Impero similarly released.
Signaling preparations for the expected release of the ship, the captain, an Indian national, and three officers of the Grace 1 were released from detention Thursday, the government said.
The whereabouts of the released crew, none of whom are Iranian, were not immediately known. The crew of the Grace 1 includes sailors from India, Pakistan and Ukraine, according to Iranian state television.
Beyond a few Gibraltar-flagged patrol boats, an Associated Press crew saw little security around the tanker on Thursday as speculation mounted over its impending release. A handful of men could be seen from a distance on the deck, some of them carrying binoculars and looking into the horizon.
This is the second time the Trump administration has moved to seize a ship in recent months. In May, the Justice Department announced that it had seized a North Korean cargo ship used to supply coal to the isolated nation in violation of international sanctions.
Tensions have escalated in the Persian Gulf region since Trump over a year ago unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The decision stopped billions of dollars’ worth of business deals, largely halted the sale of Iran’s crude oil internationally and sharply depreciated Iran’s currency, the rial.
In recent weeks, Iran has begun to step away from the nuclear deal by increasing its production and enrichment of uranium. It has threatened to take further steps in early September if Europe can’t help it sell its oil abroad.
Lina Khatib, head of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House, said the U.S. request on the Grace 1 was based on its own imposed sanctions on Iran, and not the EU’s sanctions on oil exports to Syria.
“Although the U.S. expects its European allies to abide by these sanctions, it is up to the Gibraltar authorities to assess the allegations presented by the U.S.,” Khatib said.
Resolving the tanker dispute would help Prime Minister Johnson focus on domestic issues as he works to complete Britain’s exit from the European Union and prepare for anticipated national elections over the next few months.
The U.S. has been asking its allies to take part in a naval mission to protect shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, at the Mouth of the Persian Gulf, though European nations have been reluctant.
Britain has so far been the only one to express willingness to join a maritime security mission. It has also been giving U.K.-flagged vessels a naval escort since the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s seizure of the Stena Impero.
Italy has had 67 governments over the past 74 years; in that respect, the impending collapse of the 5 Star–Lega coalition government is hardly surprising. For 14 months, the far-right Lega party helmed by current Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has managed to cooperate with the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement despite little agreement on actual policy beyond a general contempt for the E.U. Lega’s priorities have centered on stemming migration flows into the country and cutting taxes; for 5 Star, the focus has been on expanding the social safety net and radically reforming Italy’s sclerotic political system. Tensions in the coalition have risen in recent months as Lega has been accused of soliciting help from the Kremlin ahead of European elections in May, a charge that Salvini dismisses as the “fantasies of James Bond.” Things came to a head earlier this month when 5 Star voiced opposition to a long-cherished Lega rail project, which Salvini used as a pretext to set the government collapse in motion.
Despite Lega’s being the junior coalition partner in the government (5 Star controls 227 seats to Lega’s 124 in Italy’s 630-seat Chamber of Deputies), Salvini has been driving the policy agenda. Much of that has to do with his talent for communication and Lega’s rising poll numbers, which at last count hovered at 38%–more than double the vote share it received in the 2018 general election. Should those poll numbers hold steady or even improve on the back of a political campaign, Salvini is poised to become the country’s next Prime Minister. And if things really break Salvini’s way, he will be able to form a right-wing government with another far-right (but much smaller) party called the Brothers of Italy, while excluding center-right Forza Italia and its leader, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. There remains a chance another constellation of parties will band together to steer the government through difficult budget negotiations with the E.U. at the end of the year. That wasn’t what Salvini was expecting when he called for a no-confidence vote, but Italian politics can be unpredictable.
Most people assume an empowered Salvini will be inclined to push Brussels to the brink if and when he secures Italy’s premiership. But we are more likely to see policy continuity from the next Lega-led government, as Salvini has been the one calling the shots for some time now. Salvini is also less likely to purposely pick a major fight with Brussels once firmly in power–both because he no longer has the political shield of being a junior partner in a coalition led by someone else, and because he’s poised to lead the longest-serving Italian government in several generations should he perform as well as expected. As it is, Italy is struggling with its economy and finances; a genuine confrontation with Brussels would put the screws to an Italian economy that Salvini vowed to resuscitate as a pro-business candidate.
Factor in the increasing likelihood Europe will tip into recession (the specter of a no-deal Brexit, ongoing turmoil in Turkey and rising U.S.-China tensions all weigh heavily on slowing European growth), and Salvini’s life looks set to get more difficult even if he does win big in elections. Europe shouldn’t be worried Salvini will purposely force a major confrontation with Brussels so much as that he’ll be unable to manage an economic crisis, whether triggered by him unintentionally or by circumstances beyond his control.

By Ajay ChhibberIn his August 12 interview to ET (bit.do/e4AcL), Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his pro-growth, pro-investor intent. But despite some important reforms like goods and services tax (GST), Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), foreign direct investment (FDI) liberalisation, and better ease of doing business and infrastructure, the overall impression of his first term hasn't been investor friendly. The economy is in a downward spiral. The stock market has taken a huge beating after the Budget was announced, as foreign portfolio investments (FPIs) have fled. Major sectors are drastically down and layoffs increasing. The economy is, perhaps, in a worse shape than when Modi came to power. Turning all this into a virtuous cycle, and to revive 'animal spirits' to reach the goal of a $5 trillion economy, will require some of the harmful measures in the Budget to be retracted, and get growth, exports and investment — not handouts — to become the focus of economic policy.Getting Exports on Track RBI governor Shaktikanta Das must be congratulated for doing his bit by reducing the repo rate by 110 basis points. He could cut further, as the real repo rate is still over 200 basis points and core inflation has dropped to 300 basis points. But by keeping an accommodative stance, he is clearly headed in the right direction. This will also help weaken the rupee and encourage exports. Only a third of these cuts have been passed on, and State banks must cut further. But monetary policy will only do so much. Fiscal and real-side measures are needed. The ball is now in GoI's court. Modi's call to look beyond the Budget will not work. Some immediate short-term measures should be introduced: * Revoke the recent increase in taxes for high-income. This may also repair confidence among FPIs in Indian markets. * Reduce corporate taxes for all firms to 25% and remove exemptions as announced in the first year of the Modi administration. * Take back the idea that all listed companies must have 35% public shareholding. * Reduce statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) and direct State banks to lend, instead of buying more government security (G-Sec) debt. Set lending targets for public sector banks.* Do a quick quality review of nonbanking financial companies (NBFCs) and help those that are well managed and vital to recovery. * Provide incentives for housing and automobile sectors to revive demand. Even temporary time-bound relief will help.* Remove all ecommerce restrictions. Target 10-12 key exportoriented labour-intensive sectors for special credit, duty-free access to imports and tax incentives.* Aggressively sell 50-60 public sector undertakings (PSUs) and direct funds towards the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). Ensure that the Air India sale doesn't get stalled again.*Remove all labour laws and employees' provident fund (EPF) requirements for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).* Monetise existing infrastructure assets to accelerate funding for new projects.* Reduce freight rates for railways and reduce cross-subsidisation of fares.* Abolish the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Act, and not just remove the jail punishment clause for violations, as was reportedly decided by GoI earlier this week. No other country has such a law. It simply reduces India's competitiveness, with no clarity on its impact. But over the medium term, more structural measures will also be needed to improve India's competitiveness.* Agriculture: Revise the Essential Commodities Act and Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMC) to liberalise the farm sector. Reduce subsidies on fertilisers, pesticides and electricity, and shift funds to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.Reform the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and allow more private trade in cereals, encourage trade in lentils and vegetables, and horticulture and animal husbandry. Incentivise refrigerated storage and marketing chain infrastructure through dedicated transport corridors and special credit and incentives. In a Mood to Grow * Trade and industry: Announce a new strategic industrial and trade policy, with incentives for attracting industries leaving China, and includes special efforts, including a more realistic exchange rate to export to under-represented markets. Liberalise the mining sector and allow more private entry into restricted sectors.* Announce a new tourism policy to target 20 million tourists by 2025 with aggressive global publicity, and ensure follow-up in infrastructure and public safety.* Announce a five-year plan to reduce government stake in PSUs, with the idea of keeping the 'Maharatnas' and a few key 'Navratnas' and selling the rest.* Establish 'bad bank' with RBI excess reserves and reform PSBs aggressively, while reducing GoI's stake in the banking sector. IBC is a good reform, but it's too slow to resolve the non-performing assets (NPA) mess.* Work with state governments to reach No. 50 in the World Bank's 'Ease of Doing Business' index. But also reduce cost of doing business, especially energy, logistics and labour, by establishing 20 special economic zones (SEZs).* Also work with states to increase education public spend from 4.3% to 6% of GDP and increase public spend in health from 1.4% to 3%, with more funds for basic health and sanitation. Execute public-private partnerships (PPPs) for skilling, working closely with major national and state chambers of commerce and industry.* Rationalize and simplify GST further to three rates, and introduce direct income-tax (I-T) reforms to widen the base instead of raising the rates. The current I-T exemption of Rs 5 lakh is the highest in the world. But, above all, stop the 'Fiddler on the Roof ' approach — instead of constantly fiddling with taxes, import tariffs, cesses and regulations, bring some predictability so that investments can be made. Setting a pro-growth mood with these shortand mid-term measures will hopefully change outlook.GoI needs to walk the talk — with actions — to revive animal spirits in investors. The writer is former director-general, Independent Evaluation Office, GoI
As the liquidity crunch in the non-banking finance company (NBFC) sector, which came to light with the IL&FS crisis, continues to drag the economy down, fresh revelations of blatant misgovernance by the erstwhile IL&FS mangement have been revealed by the RBI's investigation in the matter. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report said some of the key committees in the crisis-ridden Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL & FS) did not convene any meetings at all in the last few years.According to the RBI report, the Risk Management Committee (RMC) and the Investment Review Committee of IL&FS did not meet for around three years."The Risk Management Committee did not meet for about three years. There was no risk management measures in vogue," it said."Credit risk and linkage with liquidity risk was never identified in credit and investment decisions. Business strategies of the group were never deliberated from the risk perspective," it added. The central bank's report also said that no meeting of the Investment Review Committtee (IRC) was held since October 5, 2015."In the absence of the meeting of IRC, the investment related proposals were continued to be approved by the Committee of Directors (COD). There was no system of monitoring and reviewing the investment at periodical intervals," it said.In another major revelation, the RBI report said that the company did not disclose any non-performing assets (NPAs or bad loans) for the last four years and wide divergences were observed between the reported and assessed positions of assets' classification and provisions. It noted that the erstwhile IL&FS Board failed to exercise oversight over the functions of the entity and did not monitor the affairs of downstream entities in which investments were made.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) is to hold closed-door consultations on the Kashmir developments on Friday at the request of China, a diplomat at the Security Council told IANS on Thursday. The diplomat said that China's request for the meeting was made in a letter and came up during the Council's informal consultations on Wednesday. The format of the meeting as a closed-door consultation would preclude Pakistan participating in it, the diplomat said.As a closed-door meeting, the consultation's proceedings would be secret, without being broadcast or accessible to reporters.China wanted the consultations to take place on Thursday, but since the schedule was already set for the day without any meetings, it was to be taken up on Friday, the diplomat said. The diplomat said that the office of the Security Council President Joanna Wronecka of Poland was working out the details for holding the meeting and when it was to be held.Pakistan had asked for a meeting of the UNSC on Kashmir following India's decision to rescind Articles 370 and 35A of its Constitution that gave Jammu and Kashmir a special status.Except for China, all the other four permanent members of the Council have openly backed New Delhi's position that disputes between India and Pakistan are bilateral matters, with the US even saying that the Kashmir developments are an internal matter of India. The consultations on Wednesday were on Syria and Central Africa, but China brought up the Pakistani request made in a letter to the Council.Other sources said that France and China differed at the meeting on how the Kashmir issue should be discussedWhile China wanted the consultation to be formally dedicated to the Kashmir issue, France wanted it to be taken up at a lower level as "other matters" in a consultation - a sort of footnote to a consultation, sources said.
NEW DELHI: A million-plus readers every day; 27,000 new readers added in one quarter; attracting more and more young, urban, affluent readers — that's the progress report on your favourite newspaper and India's premier business daily, The Economic Times, which has bucked the overall trend of challenging times for newspaper readership. The second quarter Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2019 showed more than 1 million read ET every day, a metric called the average issue readership (AIR).ET's AIR has grown by 27,000 from the first quarter. The affluent youth quotient is high among ET readers. Among daily readers, over 65,000 new, young readers (less than 40 years) picked up the newspaper between Q1 and Q2. Half of these were in B-schools to early-corporate life age band of 20-29 years.70694469 It gets better. ET's total readership (TR), defined as the number of people who have read the newspaper at least once in the previous 30 days, is inching close to 4 million. And 800,000 new readers have come to the ET fold between IRS 2017 and IRS 2019 Q2.Overall, daily readership in the business newspaper category declined, making reader endorsement of ET even more impressive. ET's position as India's fourth-largest English language newspaper is clearly strengthened. And it is first in the business paper category by a huge distance — at 1.01 million readers, ET's daily readership is 75% more than the combined readership of Business Standard, Mint and Hindu Business Line. Mint's readership declined by 10%, Hindu Business Line held on to its readership and Business Standard registered an increase.ET's growth and continued dominance show once again that if the newspaper brand is valued by readers, the credibility of the print media is never in question. The Times of India added 140,000 readers over the previous quarter even as non-Times Group newspapers together lost 180,000 readers during the period. The IRS data shows TOI has an AIR of 6.04 million. The Times Group's Mumbai Mirror is in the fifth spot with 820,000 readers — an addition of 20,000 readers over IRS Q1.A Positive PictureAshish Bhasin, CEO (Greater South), and chairman & CEO (India), Dentsu Aegis Network, said the data is "certainly showing" a very different picture from the "gloom and doom" about the newspaper industry.Rohit Dokania, senior VP for research at IDFC Securities, said, "The data once again shows that in India, print (media) is here to stay. While globally there is a major decline in print, India is clearly bucking that trend. Growth in total readership shows that more people (including young readers) are sampling the medium. But converting total readership into daily readership is the real test."IRS research is based on a rolling average of data from the last two quarters of 2017, and the first two quarters of 2019. As per IRS definition, data for the two 2019 quarters have come from sampling done in the November 2018-April 2019 and April-July 2019 periods.Drilled down data on readership shows how India's most prosperous and its most dynamic young are joining the ET fold. In terms of socio-economic clusters, the biggest gains are concentrated in the NCCS A1 category (52,000 new daily readers). Young readers in Bengaluru and Mumbai have contributed the most to additional daily readership, followed by Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata.Thank you, dear reader, for reposing your faith in us once again. ET promises to try and serve you better.
MUMBAI: A slowdown in briefs can be revealing, according to Alan Greenspan. Innerwear sales growth fell sharply in the June quarter, demonstrating the relevance of the so-called 'men's underwear index,' as Indian consumers struggled to stretch budgets to cover discretionary spending. Conceived by former US Federal Reserve Board chairman Greenspan in the late 1970s, the index suggests that declines in the sale of men's underwear indicate a poor overall state of the economy, while upswings reflect the opposite.Quarterly performance at the top four listed innerwear firms were the weakest in a decade. Sales of Page Industries, which sells the Jockey brand of innerwear, grew 2%, its slowest expansion since 2008. That of Dollar Industries and VIP Clothing declined 4% and 20%, respectively. Lux Industries' sales were flat."The market segment at this point of time is not at its best," Page Industries CEO Vedji Ticku told analysts last week.70694625 70694627 Shrinking Disposable Income"We very clearly see that the footfalls are not the same. The sentiment is still not what it should be. There is a very slow footfall across the markets. It is all headwinds currently from all aspects of business," Ticku said. The company saw a 2% volume decline in the quarter, its first ever.Shrinking disposable income is the prime reason Indian consumers are holding back from new purchases even in essential categories and staples, experts say. Nominal per capita disposable income growth was 13.3% between 2010 and 2014 but moderated to 9.5% between 2015 and 2018. Market researcher Nielsen revised its growth forecast for the fastmoving consumer goods (FMCG) sector to 9-10% in 2019 from its previous outlook of 11-12%, citing a sharp rural slowdown.Page Industries, which controls a fifth of the men's innerwear market, has been the darling of fund managers thanks to its ability to defy a challenging macro environment, at least until now. Volume had grown even in the aftermath of the financial crisis, in the slow-growth phase between 2013 and 2016, demonetisation and inventory destocking due to the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST)."The primary reason for the drop is rural distress, flattening lending conditions, which is again due to the rising NPAs (nonperforming assets) in the banking sector, and the ailing health of financial institutions, especially NBFCs (nonbanking finance companies)," Dollar Industries managing director Vinod Kumar Gupta said during an investor call last week. "The unemployment rate has also been very high. All these factors have led to a decrease in expenditure at the consumer level. Availability of funds (has) also slowed down at the MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) level as well."The innerwear category, estimated at Rs 27,931 crore, accounts for 10% of the total apparel market and is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 10% over the next decade to Rs 74,258 crore. Experts, however, feel innerwear is evolving from being functional to a segment with a fashion quotient. It's also shifting from a price-sensitive category to a brand-sensitive one.The slowdown has been reflected in the valuation of innerwear companies. Over the past year, both Page and Lux have fallen 46% while Dollar Industries has seen an erosion of 33% in its share price. VIP Clothing declined 76% over the past year.Credit Suisse has cut the earnings estimate of Page Industries by 9-11%. Kotak Institutional Equities cut its earnings forecast by 5-6% after pricing in the weak June quarter results.
NEW DELHI: India will soon take steps to make punishments under the Companies Act less harsh by ensuring that most violations are regarded as civil rather than criminal offences as the government looks to reassure investors and industry.A criminal offence can lead to imprisonment for executives in the event of a conviction. Decriminalisation of the law has been attempted earlier, but many such instances remain.Only the gravest breaches will remain criminal offences in the comprehensive cleanup being planned. "We are now looking at making most offences civil, except those dealing with serious frauds," a senior government official told ET, adding that monetary penalties would be increased, in line with global practices. 70694555 These relate to existing provisions in the Companies Act that classify offences as criminal in nature and lead to jail. More than 40 instances of violations under the Companies Act are punishable by prison, according to an ET analysis. The government has already decided not to operationalise the new corporate social responsibility (CSR) provisions in the recently amended Companies Act.Strong Signal to Business CommunityThat would have made violations punishable by jail. ET had reported this on August 14.The government is keen to send out a strong signal to the business community as the country battles a slump in demand and muted investment amid slowing growth. The move will also free up the courts from dealing with offences that are procedural in nature. In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid down the marker, saying wealth creators should not be eyed with suspicion and that they should be respected. In an interview to ET published on August 12, Modi had said he would do his best to make India a better place to do business. "I consider entrepreneurs as India's growth ambassadors. I want to tell them that our government will leave no stone unturned to make India a better place to do business in all aspects," he had said.Criminal offencesA host of violations under the companies law are treated as criminal offences and are punishable by imprisonment in contrast with the global practice of treating white-collar crimes, barring grave ones, as compoundable and settled with a fine.Among those regarded as criminal offences are providing misleading information in a prospectus, refusal to register shares, tampering with the minutes of meetings, failure by a director to disclose his interest, loans given to directors in violation of rules and breaches of related-party transaction regulations.Concern mounted after recent changes to CSR provisions made violations a criminal offence liable to jail of up to three years. The government responded swiftly to industry's concerns over the specific provisions dealing with CSR norms introduced through an amendment to the Companies Act in the just-concluded session of Parliament and decided not to operationalise them. A similar exercise is now underway to decriminalise the Companies Act.This will be in line with recommendations of a high-level committee headed by corporate affairs secretary Injeti Srinivas that gave its report a year back. The panel members included Kotak Mahindra Bank managing director and CEO Uday Kotak and Xpro Ltd chairman Sidharth Birla. The official said considerable work had already been done in this direction with 65% of offences under the companies law being classified as civil. Some of the changes suggested by the committee have been incorporated. With regard to technical violations, amendments were made in the Companies Act, bringing them within the in-house adjudication mechanism. The government now wants to expand this further. In the previous Companies Act (prior to 2013), all violations were regarded as criminal in nature. For example, even a one-day delay in filing the balance sheet led to prosecution. The 2013 Act decriminalised only some violations, prompting the setting up of the panel.Experts said the acid test for punishment by way of imprisonment should be in case where persons are found guilty of fraud with the intent to deceive or to gain undue advantage or to injure the interest of stakeholders. "All other defaults should be punishable with fines," said Pavan Vijay, founder, Corporate Professionals.
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extolled the role of wealth creators in reducing poverty and said a stable government and predictable policy meant that India had a conducive economic environment, especially with inflation well under control. He also announced an investment of Rs 100 lakh crore in infrastructure projects and the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff in his annual Independence Day address. Wealth creators must not be viewed with suspicion as they serve the nation and deserve respect and encouragement, Modi said, calling them the "country's wealth," in a reassuring message for corporates from the ramparts of the Red Fort. "Respect for them should increase as, if wealth is not created, it will not be distributed and the poor in the country will not benefit," he said. "Wealth creation is very important for the country and we have to take this forward too," the PM said, seeking to dispel what he said were wrong notions that had taken hold about corporates.Modi stressed that a "very conducive environment" existed for economic accomplishments as the "government is stable, policy is predictable and arrangements are stable, raising confidence of the world, which views the political stability of India with respect and pride."India has Economic OpportunityIndia shouldn't let this opportunity pass as the world is eager to trade with it, Modi said. Experts have pointed to the economic opportunity for India as the US and China battle over trade issues."This government has delivered on the significant equation of controlling inflation while raising the growth rate — this is a matter of pride," the PM said, stressing that the fundamentals of the economy were strong."In the last five years, we added $1 trillion to our economy. In next five years, we can reach a $5 trillion economy," he reiterated.J&K MeasuresModi countered arguments over the government's recent measures on Jammu and Kashmir, asking why the Opposition hadn't taken any decisions on Articles 370 and 35A when it had a majority. He asked why Article 370 hadn't been made "permanent" if the Opposition had been convinced of its importance. Modi made the point that the government's steps in Kashmir has been welcomed by many across party lines."This shows even they knew what was happening was not right but no one had the courage or intent to correct the situation," he said. "It would have put a question mark on their political future. For me, the country's future is everything — political future does not matter." the PM said. Modi said he had fulfilled Sardar Patel's dream of One Nation, One Constitution within 70 days of his second term by scrapping Article 370, saying his government did not believe in "putting off or harbouring problems."He juxtaposed this with the 70 years before his government's advent, saying he had also acted without delay to implement the law abolishing triple talaq.'Population explosion'Modi also brought the "population explosion" to the country's attention, saying that Indians must worry about this. Those who are aware of the issue kept their families small, which was a "patriotic act," the PM said, asking others to emulate them and not leave a child's future to fate and society. "Think if you are prepared to fulfil the needs of a child… Will you be able to perform your role in realising the child's dreams?" Modi said. The PM also appealed to people to avoid holidaying overseas and instead visit 15 domestic destinations by the year 2022 with their children to help create jobs.He also mentioned the need for "reducing the interference of the government in the life of a common citizen" and increasing the "ease of living" of people.""Independent India means government slowly exiting the lives of people to be able to take decisions of their life… we should build such an ecosystem," the PM said.Other key appeals by him included shunning single-use plastic by October 2 and reducing the usage of chemical fertilisers. The proposal to establish a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) role has been pending for almost two decades since the Kargil war."The world is changing and contours of war are changing too," Modi said. "We cannot think in silos and all our armed force should move forward as a unit. Army, navy, air force – one remains ahead, the other two steps and the third three steps behind – this will not work," Modi said, adding that a CDS would provide effective leadership at the top level to the three armed forces.Modi also announced Rs 100 lakh crore of investments in modern infrastructure projects in the current government's tenure for projects such as Sagarmala, Bharatmala, modern railway stations, airports, hospitals and educational institutions. He announced a Jal Jeevan Mission to be launched at the cost of Rs 3.5 lakh crore for taking drinking water to every home as well as water conservation programmes. The PM also appealed to traders to fully adopt digital payments.
LONDON: Bitcoin extended losses on Thursday after suffering its worst day for a month on Wednesday, with traders citing factors ranging from technical trading to jitters in traditional markets washing into cryptocurrency trading. The biggest cryptocurrency fell 5.5 per cent in early trade after slumping 7.7 per cent a day earlier, when it dropped under $10,000 for the first time since Aug. 1 and posted its biggest fall since July 16.It was last down 1.7 per cent at $9,859.Traders said it was difficult to pinpoint the catalyst that triggered the losses. Some cited selling caused by technical trading as bitcoin approached the widely-watched $10,000 mark. Others said nerves from the recent fall in global equity markets on fears of a recession had infected cryptocurrencies, though exactly how digital coin and equity markets are linked is up for debate."The link (with stocks) is unreliable on a day to day basis," said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA, adding that the bitcoin market was unpredictable.Last week, bitcoin climbed as stocks fell, prompting some crypto enthusiasts to argue it was behaving like a safe haven in a manner similar to gold or the Japanese yen. But market players said the gains reflected its potential for quick gains more than any safe-haven credentials.Other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and Ripple's XRP, which are often tightly correlated with bitcoin, also fell.
