There are a couple constants in baseball — absolutely no crying, the beer should be cold enough to give your hands freezer burn, and you will hear "Baby Shark" at some point during the game.
Sure, there's nothing more exhilarating than getting thousands of people to stomp and clap in time to "We Will Rock You" or yell "BUM BUM BUM" during "Sweet Caroline." But those songs have worn down stadium loudspeakers for long enough — it's time to flex fingers and all collectively show off our chomping game to the other team. In the name of baseball, of course.
It doesn't look like we've lost the ability to go absolutely wild for "Baby Shark," especially if Nationals Park is any indication. Read more...

Mariah Carey congratulated Lil Nas X on Twitter Monday after "Old Town Road" broke her Billboard record for most weeks at No. 1. And she did it the way everyone should be congratulated: with a kind of weird Photoshop job.
The record was previously held by two songs: "One Sweet Day," Carey's 1995 collaboration with Boyz II Men, and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," which spent 16 weeks atop the charts in 2017. This week, "Old Town Road" reached the 17-week mark.
"Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!" Carey tweeted. "We've been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!" Read more...

Reaching for your phone as a distraction from uncomfortable situations has become a reflex at this point. It's a handy tactic to avoid eye contact in public, but bolting to social media or even self-care apps when you're stressed or anxious could subconsciously be making you feel worse.
It's time we find something to focus our energy that's more productive than listening for Twitter's refresh "pop" sound every five minutes.
Mindfulness and the focus on focus aren't new by any means, but have increasingly been in the spotlight due to a mass fixation on self care. Sure, being open and curious about the present without judging other ideas rattling in your brain sounds great, but here's the thing: It doesn't come easy for everyone. Mastering mindfulness can take time — and the right level of expectations. For those who aren't ready to hop on the meditation train, there are other options to help you chill out. Read more...

It's been two years since Tesla hit the switch on the world's largest battery in South Australia — you know, the one Elon Musk made a bet to build in 100 days or he'd pay for it. Now the company's unveiled another colossal project.
Following the success of the Powerpack system, the tech giant has unveiled the dramatically named Megapack, a giant new battery product designed "to match global demand for massive battery storage projects."
Tesla completed installing the world's biggest lithium ion battery, a Powerpack system with 100 megawatts of capacity, in South Australia in November 2017. Connected to Neoen's Hornsdale Wind Farm near Jamestown, three hours’ drive from Adelaide, the Powerpack system was meant to alleviate some of the state's severe energy issues. Read more...
I'm not exactly sure why Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe seem to be losing their minds in black and white and a 4:3 aspect ratio, but I sure do look forward to finding out.
This trailer for The Lighthouse gives us a peek at the next effort from Robert Eggers, writer and director of The Witch. It's light on story, but heavy on booze-addled delirium. As far as I can tell, Pattinson and Dafoe are a duo of lighthouse keepers who drink, argue, hug, and play with sea creatures.
There's also a shot of what looks like a makeshift grave at one point. Spooky. You should expect nothing less from Eggers, after The Witch. It's not clear when The Lighthouse is coming, but the trailer promises it'll be soon. Read more...

Everyone has an awkward date story — but we doubt there are many people out there with stories that can top Melissa McCarthy's.
During an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, she described a date where her companion spent the entire meal moaning about how expensive everything was, and how he could make it cheaper at home.
But that wasn't even the worst bit. As they walked back to McCarthy's apartment, the guy told her he had "this thing" in his bag that he'd got "from a guy at work." He said it was a ring.
"I'll just say it's not a ring for your finger or your toes," explained McCarthy. "This was my one and only offering of that after a date going terribly. I'm standing on Fairfax, which is a very busy street, and he's got it from his friend at work — it's not even new!" Read more...

I never read The Boys, and I honestly don't care to after watching Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's adaptation of the comic.
It's not that I wasn't a fan; quite the opposite, in fact. But The Boys, the one that's now streaming on Amazon, is such a modern and aggressively human take on superhero stories that I'm worried about getting to know these characters in some other medium and spoiling everything.
The eight-hour first season — I pray there are more, because wow what an ending — introduces a world that actually gives a shit when superheroes screw up. The heroes themselves are untouchable corporate entities, but The Boys fixates on the collateral damage that tends to trail superhuman hijinks. Read more...

An official from China’s northwestern Xinjiang region called the country’s practice of detaining Muslim minorities a “pioneering” approach to combating terrorism, and claimed that most people interned in controversial facilities have been released.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing Tuesday, Shohrat Zakir, Xinjiang’s Uighur governor, said that most of the detainees who were held in the euphemistically dubbed “re-education centers” have left after signing “work contracts” with area companies, the Associated Press reports.
Zakir declined to provide the number of people still arbitrarily detained, according to AP, but the U.S. State Department estimates up to 2 million Turkic Muslims are being held in the internment camps.
Beijing has drawn international condemnation for the practice. After initially denying the existence of a mass incarceration program, the Chinese government defended the detentions as a form of “re-education” and “vocational training,” comparing the centers to “boarding schools.”
“Most of the graduates from the vocational training centers have been reintegrated into society,” Zakir said. “More than 90% of the graduates have found satisfactory jobs with good incomes.”
Detainees who have been released from the camps however have reported being subjected to political indoctrination that seeks to instill loyalty to the Communist Party and to prevent the observance of Islam.
Another official, Xinjiang Vice Chairman Alken Tuniaz, defended the camps and said that detainees were allowed to “request time off” and “regularly go home.” Although people in camps were not allowed to practice religion during their “period of study” they are permitted to practice their faith at home, he said according to AP.
Activists rebuked both officials’ claims. “Shohrat Zakir’s remarks completely distort the reality of the systematic persecution that Uighurs are suffering in China,” said Dilxat Raxit, a spokesperson for the World Uyghur Congress.
Earlier this month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called China’s treatment of Uighurs “one of the worst human rights crises of our time.”
Hundreds of protesters disrupted subway stations across Hong Kong during the busy morning commute Tuesday, blocking carriage doors and preventing the trains from leaving. Harried passengers faced transportation chaos as groups of demonstrators flooded the platforms and forced service delays or partial suspensions.
Protests have rocked Asia’s financial capital for eight consecutive weeks in a movement that has pitted demonstrators against the city’s Beijing-back administration. Increasingly, the protests have pursued tactics that interrupt daily life in the city.
Tuesday morning’s train disruptions, the second in a week, followed a sit-in at the city’s international airport on Friday, as well as rallies that ended in violent clashes and police firing tear gas in residential areas on Saturday and Sunday.
While the protests were sparked in June by an extradition bill that has since been suspended, the movement has morphed into a broader revolt against the Chinese government’s control over the semi-autonomous enclave. Beijing has maintained its support for the police and the city’s embattled leader.
The train disruptions also come the day after a spokesperson for China’s top policy office in Hong Kong called an unprecedented press conference to denounce the protesters.
Videos on social media showed protesters obstructing train doors at the Tiu Keng Leng station before 8 a.m. Tuesday. For several minutes the train was unable to shut the doors and leave.
The tactic was repeated across several other stations, and Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) reported backlogs and interruptions due to a number of incidents “involving train door obstruction.” The MTR said free shuttle buses would be provided at the impeded stops.
In some areas, heated disputes between passengers anxious to leave the platform and protesters broke out.
By lunchtime, the MTR website continued to show some service delays on the Island and Kwung Tong lines, which run through the city’s central financial district and out toward suburbs near the Chinese border, respectively.
Across the world calls to protect the planet are growing louder, yet standing up against the deleterious effects of mining, logging and agribusiness continues to be fatal, U.K.-based watchdog Global Witness said in a new report Tuesday.
By sheer number, the Philippines was found to be the deadliest country for environmental defenders in 2018, with 30 environmentalists murdered. But around the globe, more than three defenders were killed each week of last year, the group’s latest report Enemies of the State? says.
“These are ordinary people trying to protect their homes and livelihoods, and standing up for the health of our planet,” Global Witness said in a release.
While the total last year, 164 deaths, represents a drop from the 2017 peak of 201, the group notes that non-lethal means of quashing dissent are also rampant.
“Countless more people were threatened, arrested or thrown in jail for daring to oppose the governments or companies seeking to profit from their land,” it said. It is common for businesses and authorities to “use courts and legal systems to silence those who threaten their interests,” the report notes.
The report calls renewed international attention to the bloodshed that has occurred under President Rodrigo Duterte’s watch. Soon after coming to power in 2016, Duterte declared a deadly crackdown on drugs and his administration has been mired in accusations of human rights abuses and violence. In 2017, Global Witness said 48 environmental defenders were killed on the archipelagic nation, the highest ever recorded in an Asian country. In both 2017 and 2018, a large number of those deaths were linked to agribusiness.
Globally, mining was responsible for the largest number of killings—43 deaths—while conflicts over water projects surged at 17 deaths.
Across sectors, demand for consumer products—from food to jewelry to mobile phones—drives the persecution, the report says.
Global Witness warned that despite a dip in total deaths, the overall climate for environmental activists does not look to be improving. “Signs are worrying that the situation for environmental and land defenders will worsen,” it says. For example, Brazil’s strongman leader Jair Bolsonaro has pledged to open indigenous reserves for commercial development and in the U.S., President Donald Trump has sought to open more land to oil and gas companies.
And in the U.K., anti-fracking activists were targeted with terrorism related charges carrying potential life sentences, charges far more serious than are usually brought against protesters.
“This is a phenomenon seen around the world: land and environmental defenders are declared terrorists, locked up or hit with paralyzing legal attacks, for defending their rights, or simply for living on lands that are coveted by others,” Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, U.N. Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said in a statement.
Companies and governments must act to stop land and resource conflicts, the report says.
“As we hurtle towards climate breakdown, it has never been more important to stand with those who are trying to defend their land and our planet against the reckless destruction being meted out by the rich and powerful,” Alice Harrison, a senior campaigner at Global Witness, said.
(RAWALPINDI, Pakistan) — A Pakistani military plane on a training flight crashed into homes near the garrison city of Rawalpindi before dawn on Tuesday, killing at least 18 people, most of them on the ground.
Fires, damaged homes and debris were visible in Mora Kalu village on the outskirts of Rawalpindi after daybreak. After rescue efforts ended, troops and police cordoned off the residential area to search for plane debris and investigate the crash site.
Rescue officials said there were no survivors on the plane and that 13 civilians were killed on the ground. The army said in a statement that five crew members, including two pilots, died in the crash.
Farooq Butt, an official at the state-run emergency service, said 15 people were also injured in the crash. There were concerns the death toll could rise further since some of those injured were in critical condition.
“We have moved all the bodies and injured persons to hospitals,” Butt told The Associated Press. “Most of the victims received burn injuries.”
He added that there were children among the dead.
Residents said they woke up when they heard an explosion and saw debris of a burning plane near their homes. Army helicopters were seen hovering over the crash site later.
“My sister, her husband and their three children were killed when the plane crashed into their home,” said Mohammad Mustafa, as he sobbed near his sister’s badly damaged home. He said rescuers and troops quickly reached the area after the crash.
Several men and women who lost their relatives in the crash were seen wailing and crying as rescuers put charred bodies of the victims into ambulances. Footage on social media showed the plane was flying very low before it quickly went down.
Abdul Rehman, a medical doctor, said at least three homes were badly damaged and the pilots’ bodies had been retrieved.
“According to our latest information, a total of 18 people were killed in the plane crash. They include five crew members and 13 civilians who were killed when the plane crashed into homes and quickly caught fire,” he said.
Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan in separate statements expressed their condolences.
The military said the army aircraft was on a routine training flight when it crashed, but had no information on the possible cause. An investigation was underway.
Pakistan’s military has been on high alert since February, when India launched an airstrike inside Pakistan to target Pakistan-based militants behind the suicide bombing that killed 40 Indian troops in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan at the time retaliated and said it shot down two Indian air force planes. One Indian pilot was captured and later released amid signs of easing tensions.
In 2010, a Pakistani passenger jet crashed into the hills surrounding the capital, Islamabad, in poor weather, killing all 152 people on board.

Ahmed reported from Islamabad. Associated Press writer Asim Tanveer in Islamabad contributed to this report.
(UNITED NATIONS) — A confidential report by the ethics office of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees claims its top management including Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl “have engaged in sexual misconduct, nepotism, retaliation, discrimination and other abuses of authority.”
The report, obtained Monday by The Associated Press, alleges these acts were carried out “for personal gain, to suppress legitimate dissent, and to otherwise achieve their personal objectives, jeopardizing the credibility and interests of the agency.”
The ethics office said the concerns in the 10-page document, first reported by Al Jazeera, represent “an extremely grave and significant reputational, operational and security risk to the agency.”
The allegations come at a time when the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, known as UNRWA, has narrowly survived the unprecedented loss of all funding from the United States, its largest donor, and is currently enjoying “an equally unprecedented wave of support from existing and new donors, as well as global goodwill,” the ethics report said.
U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said an investigation of the allegations is ongoing and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres won’t comment until it is completed. He said Krahenbuhl “has been doing excellent work, but we are saying that without prejudice to the result of this investigation.”
Citing information from some 25 current and past UNRWA directors and staff, the report said an “inner circle” comprising Krahenbuhl, his deputy Sandra Mitchell, Chief of Staff Hakam Shahwan and senior adviser Maria Mohammedi have bypassed normal decision-making processes and sidelined field and program directors and other senior staff.
According to the ethics report, Krahenbuhl, who was appointed to lead UNRWA on March 30, 2014, started a relationship with Mohammedi late that year that “went beyond the professional,” created “a toxic environment,” and caused “frequent embarrassment.” When directors who have since left raised it with Krahenbuhl, the report said “they felt increasingly isolated or marginalized” and one believed it was key to his contract not being renewed.
The ethics office said Krahenbuhl established the post of senior adviser and followed “an extreme fast-track” to give the job to Mohammedi. She traveled with him on the vast majority of his business travels, using waivers so she could travel business class with him, the report alleged.
The report said some former executive office staff reported that Krahenbuhl was away from UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem for 28-29 days per month, claiming a daily allowance. It said he told a senior staff member in mid-November that he had made 52 trips up until that time in 2018.
UNRWA’s spokeswoman did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Mohammedi was quoted by Al Jazeera as rejecting accusations about her conduct as “false” and “ill-intentioned.” Al Jazeera said Mitchell rejected all allegations, including that she abused her power to secure an appointment for her spouse, and resigned in late July. It said Shahwan left in early July.
Al Jazeera said Krahenbuhl “unreservedly” rejected the characterization of UNRWA and its senior leadership and said he was cooperating with the investigation and would implement any “corrective measures or other management actions” it may recommend.
The ethics report alleged the concentration of power began in 2015 and escalated after the U.S. cut funding for UNRWA from $360 million to just $60 million in 2018. This year, the agency received nothing from the Trump administration.
Krahenbuhl has said 42 countries and institutions increased their contributions last year so the agency could finance its $1.2 million budget — and UNRWA has kept the same $1.2 billion budget this year. He called donor pledges of $113 million in late June an encouraging step, but short of alleviating a “precarious” funding situation to help 5 million Palestinian refugees this year.
The report claims the funding crisis “has served as an excuse for an extreme concentration of decision-making power in members of the ‘clique.'”
The cumulative effects of these developments, it claimed, have been an exodus of staff and “an organizational culture characterized by low morale, fear of retaliation — including through non-renewal of contracts — distrust, bullying, intimidation, and marginalization.”
The report concluded that “there is overwhelming prima facie evidence” the interconnected behavior of the four inner circle members amounts to “abuse of authority.”
(RIO DE JANEIRO) — At least 57 prisoners were killed by other inmates during clashes between organized crime groups in the Altamira prison in northern Brazil Monday with 16 of the victims being decapitated, according to prison officials.
Para state prison authorities a fight erupted around 7 a.m., between the Rio de Janeiro-based Comando Vermelho and a local criminal group known as Comando Classe A.
“Leaders of the (Comando Classe A) set fire to a cell belonging to one of the prison’s pavilions, where members of the (Comando Vermelho) were located,” the statement read.
State prisons chief Jarbas Vasconcelos said the fire had spread rapidly, with inmates held in old container units that had been adapted for the prison while another building is under construction.
The fire prevented police forces from entering the building for several hours, he told a news conference.
Two prison staff members were held hostage, but eventually released.
“It was a targeted attack. The aim was to show that it was a settling of accounts between the two groups, not a protest or rebellion against the prison system,” Vasconcelos said.
Authorities have not found any firearms following the riot, only makeshift knives.
Prison authorities said 46 inmates will be transferred to other prisons, 10 of which will go to stricter federal facilities.
President Jair Bolsonaro was elected on the promise of curbing widespread violence in Brazil, including in the country’s often overcrowded, out-of-control prisons.
The Associated Press obtained a July 2019 report from the National Justice Council that it says was filed by a local judge in charge of the facility, showing that the prison had 343 detainees for a maximum capacity of 163.
Yet Vasconcelos said the situation did not meet the official requirements to be considered overcrowded. “It is not a unit that has a prison overcrowding, we consider overcrowding when it exceeds 210%,” Vasconcelos said during the press conference.
The judge who filed the report described the overall state of the prison in the city of Altamira as “terrible.”
In many of Brazil’s prisons, badly outnumbered guards struggle to retain power over an ever-growing population of inmates who are able to run criminal activities from behind bars.
The killings echoed those of 55 inmates who died in a series of riots in May in several prisons in the neighboring state of Amazonas.
In early 2017, more than 120 inmates died in prisons across several northern states when rival gangs clashed over control of drug-trafficking routes in the region. The violence lasted several weeks, spreading to various states.
Para state authorities spent the afternoon in Altamira, drafting a security plan to avoid possible retaliations in the region. Police forces from the nearby municipality of Santerem were sent as reinforcement in the coming weeks.
Prison authorities said they had not received any prior intelligence reports of an upcoming attack.
The prison is run directly by the state, not a third-party private operator as in the Manaus prisons where the riots took place in May.
Last year, inmates had already set fire to another wing inside the same prison unit, according to the state prosecutors’ office.
Archaeologists working on a dig outside of Bloomberg’s new London headquarters have made a new discovery—dad jokes have been around for nearly 2,000 years. According to The Guardian, a team discovered an iron stylus—a pen—complete with an inscribed joke, that apparently dates back to around 70 A.D.
The inscription on the pen reads: “I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me. I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.”
In other words: Some 2,000 years ago, a Roman made the long journey to London and all they brought their friends was a pen with a joke about being broke. “‘The City’ referred to is very likely Rome,” the Museum of London Archeology, which oversaw the dig, said in a blog post, adding that “the stylus suggests a direct link between Roman Italy and the province of Britannia.”
According to the museum, London, or Londinium as it was known at the time, was far from the center of the Roman Empire, “had grown into an important centre for commerce and governance, interconnected with the wider Roman world.” As the Roman Empire spread across Europe, travelers needed ways to keep in touch with friends and family and business acquaintances back home using iron styluses to write on wax-filled wooden writing tablets. “The stylus and its inscription highlights the crucial role that writing and literacy played in allowing traders, soldiers and officials to keep in contact with peers, friends and family, some of whom lived over a thousand miles away,” the museum wrote. While dad jokes are not rare, inscribed styluses are “exceptionally” so. According to the museum, “archaeologists have found only a handful of examples from across the whole Roman Empire to date, and the Bloomberg inscription is the finest, unparalleled in the length, poetry and humour of its inscription.”
The joke pen wasn’t the only artifact that was unearthed during the excavation that place at the new Bloomberg headquarters in London between 2010 and 2014. In fact, more than 14,000 artifacts were uncovered from their resting place under the streets of London, including the first written reference to the name of the city, and more than 600 are on display at London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE.
Archaeology is central to Bloomberg’s Stirling Prize-winning building. The building’s design includes a public pedestrian arcade that re-establishes an ancient Roman road and a museum displaying the Roman temple of Mithras in its original location.
No word on whether they will sell souvenir joke pencils to visitors.
(FRANKFURT, Germany) — An 8-year-old boy was run over by a train and killed at Frankfurt’s main station on Monday after a man pushed him and his mother onto the tracks, German police said. The woman and her son were pushed onto the tracks as a high-speed ICE train was pulling into the station, one of Germany’s busiest. The mother was able to escape but the boy was hit and run over by the train and suffered fatal injuries.
The suspect then apparently tried unsuccessfully to push another person onto the track, police said.
The 40-year-old suspect fled the scene with passers-by in pursuit and was arrested near the station. He was being questioned and there was no immediate information on his possible motive.
Police spokeswoman Isabell Neumann said there appeared to be no connection between the suspect and the victims.
The boy’s mother was taken to a hospital and also was being questioned. There was no immediate information on her injuries.
Police said that the suspect is an Eritrean citizen but did not immediately release further information.
Interior Minister Horst Seehofer issued a statement condemning “this appalling act in the strongest terms” and cautioning against drawing conclusions before more is known. Seehofer said that in view of “several serious crimes” recently, he would interrupt his vacation and meet the heads of security authorities Tuesday.
He didn’t specify what he was referring to, but Monday’s incident followed a case earlier this month in which a 34-year-old woman was pushed in front of a train and killed in Voerde in northern Germany. The suspect in that case, a German-born Serb, is in custody.
(JOLARPET, India) — Amid the green Yelagiri hills of southern India, the train inches along the tracks, carrying what has become precious cargo: drinking water bound for Chennai, India’s parched Motor City.
Demand for water in the manufacturing and IT hub on the Bay of Bengal far outstrips supply, forcing authorities to take extreme and costly measures to serve the city’s 10 million people. And so, every day, the train sets out on a four-hour, 216-kilometer (134-mile) journey, its 50 tank cars carrying 2.5 million liters (660,000 gallons) of water drawn from a dam on the Cauvery River.
The train is classic Indian “jugaad,” the Hindi word for a makeshift solution to a complicated problem.
Executive engineer K. Raju confessed this is not the best engineering solution to Chennai’s water problem. “But this is a timely way to help and that’s all. This is not a permanent solution,” he said. Building an underground pipeline that brings in water from closer areas would be better, he said.
As with other fast-growing cities in the developing world, Chennai’s water woes were years in the making.
Chennai’s population has more than tripled in three decades, with people arriving to take jobs at pharmaceutical research and development labs, auto plants and high-tech industries. The runaway growth — combined with poor maintenance of its four reservoirs, ineffective sewage systems and, more recently, delayed monsoon rains — has left India’s sixth-largest city high and dry. Or nearly so.
Its reservoirs are empty, and it is relying on dwindling groundwater sources and two desalination plants for the vast majority of its water. Since June, the water board in Chennai has been turning off the taps for all but a couple of hours a day.
In early July, the government of Tamil Nadu state, of which Chennai is the capital, approved a crash engineering project to bring in water by rail for the next six months at a cost of about $94 million. Raju’s team had just 10 days to lay the necessary 650 meters (half-mile) of pipeline and install a pumping system to put water into rail cars formerly used to carry cooking oil.
The amount of water transported is just a tiny fraction of the 500 million liters (130 million gallons) a day that the water board delivers to its customers.
The train sets out every day at sunset, and just after midnight, it screeches into the city’s mostly deserted Villivakkam railway station, where men in hard hats and reflective vests connect blue hoses to the cars. It takes four hours for the water to be decanted into the city’s water system.
The following morning, at one of the city’s water distribution stations, Ranganathan, a longtime water truck driver in Chennai, pulls his colorfully painted vehicle underneath a big water tap, fills up his rig and begin making neighborhood deliveries. He puts in 16-hour days, with no time even to eat, he said.
“People get excited once they see our lorries,” said Ranganathan, who goes by only one name. “On days if it becomes late, people will start panicking. What to do? They are like my mother, sister who are worried due to water scarcity, so we help.”
At one drop-off point, a neighborhood of low-slung, one-room houses called Thousand Lights, K. Devi, a 41-year-old mother, said the six jugs of water she receives free every day mean that she and her family can bathe and wash clothes just once a week. Sometimes she buys extra cans of water for 35 rupees (about 50 cents) apiece.
She is happy to have the water, regardless of the distance it had to travel to reach her Chennai slum.
“They are voluntarily giving water, then why should we refuse?” she said.
This isn’t the first time water trains have rolled into Chennai. When the city experienced a severe drought in 2001, it imported water by rail from Erode township, more than 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) southwest of Chennai.
After that, the state government mandated that Chennai households install rainwater collection systems. The water board also began buying water from farmers and built two desalination plants. But the supply still fell short of ever-growing demand.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has announced that she will sail from Europe to North America in August, as part of a months-long climate tour around the Americas.
The 16-year-old started a strike from school in her hometown of Stockholm in August 2018 to protest government inaction on the climate crisis. Since she started striking, the movement has gone global, with an estimated 1.6 million students worldwide participating in demonstrations in March.
Thunberg is now taking a sabbatical year from school, and is hoping to meet with people on the front line of the climate change movement during her trip to North America, which will include visits to Canada, Mexico and Chile. Departing from the U.K. in mid-August, she will join large-scale climate demonstrations timed to Climate Week in New York City starting September 20, and will speak at the United Nations Climate Action Summit on September 23.
Good news! I’ll be joining the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, COP25 in Santiago and other events along the way. I’ve been offered a ride on the 60ft racing boat Malizia II. We’ll be sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from the UK to NYC in mid August.#UniteBehindTheSciencepic.twitter.com/9OH6mOEDce
Thunberg hinted at such a journey in April, when TIME traveled with her by train from London to Stockholm. The teenager avoids air travel because of the high levels of carbon emissions caused by airplanes and has so far traveled by train around Europe for speaking engagements, where her frank speeches directed towards world leaders have garnered international attention. For her Americas trip, Thunberg will be sailing on board a zero-carbon racing boat called Malizia II, fitted with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate electricity on board the vessel. The journey from the U.K. to New York will take approximately two weeks.
“We still have a window of time when things are in our own hands. But that window is closing fast. That is why I have decided to make this trip now,” Thunberg said in a statement. “During the past year, millions of young people have raised their voice to make world leaders wake up to the climate and ecological emergency. Over the next months, the events in New York and Santiago de Chile will show if they have listened. Together with many other young people across the Americas and the world, I will be there, even if the journey will be long and challenging. We will make our voices heard. It is our future on the line, and we must at least have a say in it.”
Correction, July 29
The original version of this story misstated Thunberg’s departure location. She is departing from the U.K., but the exact location has not been disclosed.

MUMBAI: State Bank of India has tightened lending terms dramatically for auto dealerships, according to a source and an internal memo seen by Reuters, seeking to reduce its exposure to risk from a sector in the midst of a sharp downturn. The shadow banking crisis that began to unfold in India during mid-2018 has deepened this year. The liquidity crunch in non-bank financing, higher insurance costs and rises in taxation have served to increase the pressure on the car sector, with monthly auto sales falling by 17-20% since April.Monthly passenger vehicle sales in June fell by the biggest margin in 18 years. In one internal memo for financing dealers selling vehicles made by Hyundai Motor Co's India unit, SBIsaid it is revising the lending terms because of "growing stress" in the carmaker's portfolio.Similar memos have been sent to dealerships for all other brands, said a senior SBI official aware of the matter, though Reuters has not seen memos relating to other carmakers. As part of the revised terms, the country's largest bank by assets has decided to halt lending to dealersof Hyundai Motor India unless they provide a minimum of 25% collateral, it said in the memo.Hyundai dealers that had already received loans from the bank will also have to provide security of between 25% and 50% of the loan amount, SBI said in the memo dated March 27 and signed by the chief general manager for supply chain financing.Hyundai did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment outside business hours. The company is India's second-largest carmaker with more than 16% of a market accounting for 3.3 million passenger vehicles in the year to March 31.Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corp's Indian business, Maruti Suzuki, dominates with a 50% share while rivals including Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford and Nissan also produce and sell cars in the country. While it is known that several Indian banks have broadly tightened lending to the auto sector, specifics have not been disclosed."There is an auto sales slowdown and we have substantial exposure to autos. We want to stay safe and this was done to mitigate risk and protect us," said the SBI official, who asked not to be named because the details had not been made public.SBI's loan exposure in the auto retail market was 718.8 billion rupees ($10.5 billion) at the end of March, according to regulatory filings."In view of the current slowdown in the auto sector, the bank is continuously reviewing its exposure," SBI told Reuters, adding that it is evaluating the situation and engaging with dealers to ensure the sector does not face any undue stress.
Even as more and more crippled banks come out of the dud asset tunnel, the heightening growth slowdown and the lingering crisis at non-banking lenders pose fresh challenges to their asset quality, warns a report. In a report, which comes months after GDP growth slipped to a five-year low at 5.8 percent for the March quarter, international rating agency Moody's said it expects growth to be "weaker" in the next 12-18 months, without quantifying its growth expectation. The government has projected an 8 percent or thereabout growth for fiscal 2020. "While banks' operating environment will stay stable, the slowdown poses challenges to their asset quality," Alka Anbarasu, a senior credit analyst at the agency warned Monday. She said growth moderation can lead to creation of a fresh bad loan mess in the retail, and small and medium enterprise segments. The agency said the slowdown comes at a time when at a time when banks are recovering from legacy non-performing loans, which at the system level had crossed 12 percent in recent past and is trending under 10 percent now.Anbarasu said there will be a slowdown in fresh bad loans generation in the non-financial sector due to recovery of the corporate sector and also recoveries from legacy problem loans.Capital infusions by government will help public sector banks maintain their capital ratios at current levels, it said, adding some private sector banks are in the process of raising new capital from the markets, as their asset growth outstrips internal capital generation.System wide profitability will improve but stay weak, and funding and liquidity will remain stable, she said.It can be noted that under its baseline scenario, the Reserve Bank expects gross NPAs to decline to 9 percent by March 2020 from 9.3 percent in March 2019. The central bank is expecting GDP to grow at 7 percent for FY20, up from 6.8 percent in FY19.

IndusInd Bank CEO Romesh Sobti said the liquidity crisis that has gripped nonbanking finance companies (NBFC) is not a systemic issue, according to the regulators. He told Saloni Shukla and MC Govardhana Rangan in an interview that one or two of them may go under. "It's a free market. Why should anybody come out to help them?" he said. He added that the liquidity squeeze has shown the key role NBFCs had been playing in driving consumption demand. "If they are not as active as they used to be, then who will fill the gap?" he said. Under Sobti, IndusInd Bank grew to become one of the country's best-performing lenders. But the exposure to Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) and asset-quality issues have made investors nervous. He said IndusInd has been proactive in handling the fallout. Edited excerpts:IndusInd Bank rose from being a private-sector lender of little interest to one that was almost on par with HDFC Bank in the eyes of investors. But in the last few quarters there have been concerns over asset quality. What went wrong? It's the overhang of just that one particular account (IL&FS). We were the only bank making provisions when no one else was talking about it. The expectation level was so high we were asked why didn't we provide in one go? We accumulated and then provided for the entire exposure. Then rumours started surfacing over exposure to multiple troubled companies. The fact is every time one raises a question, you can't go to the exchanges and start clarifying that we don't have exposure, that's not how you run a bank.'Monitoring Realty Projects after Funding'We increased our disclosures, no one has opened their books like we have done. I am telling you my rating profile — SMA (Special Mention Account), I am giving you gross NPAs (nonperforming assets) product wise. There was also a rise in your real estate financing last quarter and there are concerns over that because of the meltdown in the sector right now?Real estate is not the dirty word... some companies in the sector may have problems. There are realtors who don't borrow but I want to lend to them. It's not shutters down in any sector. Our model of financing is very granular. We finance projects and not holding companies. Our total book is Rs 6,500 crore-7,000 crore, we have 80 projects. I monitor these projects, what is the construction stage and the money comes to my escrow. The NBFC crisis started last year — what's the earliest all this will get resolved? The big shadow was cast by IL&FS and it spread across the industry, post which a realisation dawned that how were these guys funding themselves. When growth was good at 20-30%, these guys got good valuations, suddenly everybody woke to the ALM (asset-liability mismatch) issue, which brought in a risk aversion. But there is an obvious flaw in funding...When you start competing irrationally on price to get market share and show growth, you are sacrificing asset-liability mismatches. Look at loan against property — we used to grow at 20%, but our growth fell to 10%... We withdrew from that market. Not because we were seeing any delinquency but because the riskreward relationship was skewed. When valuations are linked to growth, you want growth at any cost. In the process, how do you make the margin — you borrow short and lend long... More than a bit of that happened in this crisis. We have seen a slowdown, even a sort of contagion. The regulators have indicated more than once that they don't see a systemic issue. The fear was that the liquidity issue would turn into a solvency issue — that doesn't seem to have happened. One or two companies will go belly up, it's a free market. Why should anybody come out to help them? Help can only come in the form of good portfolio purchases. What do you do when you don't have money? You stop lending, that has led to a slowdown in the sector. If you stop lending and the borrower is still paying, you become solvent... That is what NBFCs are doing to preserve liquidity. But will this add to the slowdown in the economy? The liquidity issue has brought to fore the role NBFCs play — that they have a larger role than we all thought and a lot of that goes towards consumption demand. For example, air conditioner sales have fallen — who is funding them? Not banks, they never did white goods financing, banks were never good at it. NBFCs play a very big role in fuelling growth and consumption, which is being recognised now. So, if they are not as active as they used to be, then who will fill the gap? Banks may pick up the slack but they can't fill the whole funding gap. Some budget proposals will bring relief but perhaps more needs to be done. Are you seeing a shift of the NBFC market share toward banks?Yes, there is a clear shift. We grew vehicle financing by almost 24%. There were a few loyal customers who were wooed away by pricing. For example, a customer took his first truck and fifth truck from me. Some NBFC gave him a 75 basis point differential on pricing and he asked us to match the pricing... We can't do that. He goes away but then he comes back. In the upturn, 35-40 players finance commercial vehicle but in the downturns only 8-10 remain.Do you see an asset-quality impact on retail loans due to job losses? We don't have the maturity in our customer profile to be able to do those instant loans. If you do analytics of your customer who has been around for 15 years and you feel can be given a loan… we don't have such a mature savings book. I don't have a 20-year track record with anybody. All of them came in the last four-five years. Our unsecured book has been kept around the 3% (of the total loan book) mark, so we don't worry about that. The first casualty will be the consumption loan. If it is an asset-linked loan, the casualty rates are smaller. A customer doesn't want to lose his car or home, but a clean personal loan is fine… he can delay it.How do you see IndusInd -Bharat Financial Inclusion erger improving your coverage in rural India? The merger with Bharat Financial really moves the needle for us. For years, we struggled with the question what business model should we use for rural India. We could see the impact of Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile, we could see the impact of electrification, roads, sanitation... We could see customers have the saving potential but accessing that was a problem for us. We now have access to 1.5 lakh villages — almost one-sixth of villages in India. We cover 350 districts, 1,800 branches with 9 million customers... Suddenly, we now have infrastructure to build a rural model. We want to capture the borrowers' savings, we have a run rate of 50,000 savings bank accounts a day. At the rate we are going, we will cover all of them by September.
MUMBAI: Top public and private sector banks are going on a fundraising spree as they seek to wrest market share from nonbanking finance companies (NBFCs) facing a credit crisis and smaller staterun banks weighed down by bad loans. At least three top public sector banks — State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank — and two private lenders — Axis and RBL Bank — are planning to raise an aggregate of up to Rs 62,000 crore this year in a bid to accumulate growth capital.State Bank of India is looking to raise as much as Rs 17,000 crore through bonds, with Rs 7,000 crore of this shortly as additional tier one (AT1) capital."We see consumption picking up around the festive season—second half is always the busy season and first half is the easy season," said SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar. "We have recorded a 13% credit growth and hopefully if this trend continues then we have to be prepared."Credit disbursals by NBFCs dropped 31% to Rs 1.96 lakh crore at the end of March from Rs 2.83 lakh crore in the year earlier.70442497 Bank Lending to NBFCs SlowsBank lending to NBFCs also slowed to Rs 6.2 lakh crore at the end of May against Rs 6.4 lakh crore in March. NBFCs were gripped by the liquidity squeeze that followed the unexpected default by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) in September last year."This is clearly growth capital as banks have frontloaded provisions with industry PCR (provision coverage ratio) average at 60% currently and the requirement will be much lower than FY19," said Siddharth Purohit, banking analyst with SMC Institutional Equities. "With additional capital coming in from the government to state-owned banks, we can expect to see credit recovery and higher profits in FY20."In her July 5 budget, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman pledged additional capital of Rs 70,000 crore for state-run banks this financial year. This will help some to provide for bad loans, exit the Prompt Corrective Action framework and facilitate higher lending to small and medium enterprises.Bank of Baroda will raise as much as Rs 1,500 crore through the employee share purchase scheme (ESPS) and Rs 4,500 crore through AT1bonds. It plans to raise Rs 12,000 crore in the full financial year. Canara Bank plans to raise up to Rs 12,000 crore through a mix of equity and bonds during the current fiscal to fund its business growth. The state-run lender plans to raise Rs 6,000 crore through qualified institutional placements (QIPs) while the remaining is expected to come from bond placements.Axis Bank is also looking to raise Rs 18,000 crore through a combination of QIPs as well as American and global depository receipts (ADRs, GDRs) as it looks to boost capital to drive loan growth mostly among retail customers and select corporates. RBL Bank is planning a share sale to raise up to Rs 3,500 crore, shoring up its capital base to expand into newer lending areas and maintain its fast-paced growth in retail banking."We will raise capital in the next few months—it will happen this fiscal," said RBL Bank CEO Vishwavir Ahuja. "We have taken an enabling resolution for raising between Rs 3,000 crore and Rs 3,500 crore, which was confirmed in the AGM last week. That's what we will start thinking and working on. It's on our radar this year, depending on market conditions."
NEW DELHI: Nifty50 on Monday resumed the recent downtrend and slipped below the 11,200 level amid brisk selloff. The index entered the oversold zone, as suggested by the 14-day relative strength index (RSI). But an extremely weak advance-to-decline ratio was worrying, making any recovery difficult. A Bearish Engulfing candle on the daily chart suggested that the index might be in for some more pain. Analysts said the NSE barometer may soon test the 11,100-11,110 range. For the day, the index fell 95.10 points, or 0.84 per cent, to close at 11,189. The May low of 11,108 will be the subsequent level to watch out for, said Gaurav Ratnaparkhi, Senior Technical Analyst at Sharekhan."A breach of the 11,108-11,100 zone will open up significant downside for Nifty. It will not only mean more pain in the short term but also be a sign of weakness in the market from a medium-term perspective. In terms of candlestick patterns, the index has formed an Engulfing Bear on the daily chart. Thus, Monday's high of 11,310 will now act as a key resistance," he said. Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities said a bearish pattern and a new swing low of 11,152 level have negative implications for Nifty. "It has now entered a key lower support around 11,150-100 zone (support as per the concept of change in polarity, according to weekly timeframe chart), but there is still no indication of any upside reversal pattern from near these supports," he said.Nifty is approaching its 200-DMA placed at 11,133 and a breakdown from this support can extend the corrective move to 11,100 level, said Aditya Agarwala, Senior Manager, Technical Analysis at YES Securities. "However, a sustained trade above the 11,300 mark, being the previous session's high, can trigger a short-covering rally. Moreover, the RSI is sitting at an extreme oversold zone suggesting a possible short-covering rally in the coming sessions," Agarwala said.
India will approach the European Union seeking 'adequacy' status with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) once the country finalises and passes its own Personal Data Protection Bill, two people familiar with the matter said. The reciprocal recognition of data protection equivalency is expected to reduce the compliance burden and give the outsourcing and technology industry a leg-up in attracting clients from Europe."Adequacy means we recognise each other's privacy protections. This will help all industries," said a senior government official. The EU Commission and Japan signed a similar deal of equivalency to enable safe data transfers, based on a high level of protection of personal data.As a result, all data transfers from the EU to Japan will be protected by the same guarantees that apply under the GDPR. The EU has so far signed adequacy agreements with 13 countries, including Canada and New Zealand. "Adequacy gives EU companies comfort in sending data to India. It provides automatic compliance and helps bolsters IT offshoring capability of Indian companies," said Nikhil Narendran, partner of legal firm Trilegal. While compliance requirements of the data protection legislation will initially increase costs, it will equip India to become a responsible global digital hub in the long run, he said.Entities operating in the EU or even outside the bloc have had to significantly adjust their businesses if they hold, process or transact with data of EU nationals. This involves rewriting contracts with customers as well as service providers. The Indian information technology and IT-enabled services industry has been the most affected by the new law since it derives almost 30% of its revenues from Europe."Adequacy helps in better data transfers, removes barriers to outsourcing and makes it easier for enterprises. It gives comfort to companies given there is an agreement at the country level," said Rama Vedashree, CEO at Data Security Council of India.
BENGALURU: New-age internet companies are seeing more women in frontline roles and it's easy to see why — lower attrition rates, better ratings for delivery women and improved productivity at warehouses. That's led to greater demand for women at delivery hubs and fulfillment centres. The trend is reflected in the latest Employment Outlook report by staffing platform TeamLease Services that has been shared exclusively with ET, which said the total number of women employed in the delivery industry across various roles now stands at 67,900, up from 40,000 last year.Overall, the gig economy accounts for more than 1.4 million jobs in India, which mostly includes delivery staff, drivers, beauticians and maintenance workers, according to BetterPlace, a platform for blue-collar workers. The gig economy, led by the likes of Uber, Ola, Swiggy and Zomato, typically offers short-term contracts or freelance work to its drivers and delivery personnel. While more women are joining the gig economy in such roles, they are paid less than men for the same jobs. There's an 8-10% salary difference between male and female delivery executives, ranging between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000 per month, according to TeamLease. As much as 60% of the jobs are in food tech, 30% in ecommerce and courier services and 10% in hyperlocal delivery, it said. 70442769 Women are more diligent, with customers complaining less, said one startup boss. "We see far (fewer) complaints for our women delivery executives, something which is more common with men when instances like missing items are reported," said Revathi Roy, founder of Hey Deedee, an all-women delivery service startup.Safety a Key ConcernHey Deedee has a delivery force of 800 women. Another 2,500 women are attending a 45-day training camp at which they'll be taught self-defence, road safety and other skills, the company said. Besides ecommerce companies, the Mumbai-based startup also works with retailers such as Pizza Hut and Nature's Basket. But even as the number of women entering the gig economy is rising, challenges remain when hiring them for frontline roles, especially with regard to their safety as reflected in Hey Deedee's training regimen. That's why it's not alone in providing self-defence training, aimed at equipping women with the ability to tackle untoward situations. Apart from that, companies said many women lack two-wheeler riding skills, an essential for last-mile delivery roles. With 1,200 women employees in its last-mile network, Amazon provides third-party safety apps and a dedicated helpline among other initiatives, to ensure women's safety. "In the last-mile network, there are several jobs available for women like operational and managerial roles in delivery stations, delivery associates and IHS (I Have Space) partners, among others," said an Amazon spokesperson. IHS is a last-mile connectivity programme in association with small store owners.Amazon added 800 women last year, up from 20 three years ago. "We have a dedicated delivery station in Chennai, which is run solely by women. Here, they deliver packages on two-wheelers, covering a radius of 2-3 km from the station," a spokesperson said. Other women-only delivery stations have expanded into mixed centres.Walmart-owned Flipkart said it first hired a set of women in delivery roles in 2017 when the online retailer introduced grocery as a category, which saw better acceptability by customers. It later expanded in other categories in the supply chain such as furniture and large appliances. With 300 women in roles such as supervising operations, sorting centres, packaging and in charge of hubs and delivery executives, the firm plans to provide education and sensitisation modules apart from facilities such as wash rooms and creches. The company said it aims to take women staffing to 20% across the supply chain.Besides ecommerce, food-delivery apps such as Swiggy said it now has 700 women as delivery partners while rival Zomato employs 500. These companies said they see more women participate in cities such as Kochi, Jaipur, Pune and other non-metro areas, most of them on company rolls."Our first woman delivery partner joined us in Pune in January last year and the number is steadily growing," said a Zomato spokesperson. "Flexible work timings help female delivery partners to familiarise themselves with routes and restaurants and we ensure regular interactions with delivery staff and track them through the partner app."The number of women has significantly increased in sectors such as supply chain, retail, travel, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), where they are working in customer service, sales and other frontline roles, according to TeamLease. But these figures are still relatively low, said Rituparna Chakraborty, cofounder of Team-Lease Services."The percentage of Indian women in the workforce is still around 26-27% — one of the lowest in the world," Chakraborty said. "We have to remain focussed around policy initiatives and corporate India has to take a long-term view on attracting and retaining women in the workforce."
