Cryptocurrency might be a challenge to the primacy of the U.S. dollar, but that's not stopping the Internal Revenue Service from wanting a piece of the action.
The IRS announced Friday that it was sending letters to 10,000 cryptocurrency holders informing them that they needed to report, and pay taxes on, their crypto transactions and capital gains.
"Taxpayers should take these letters very seriously by reviewing their tax filings and when appropriate, amend past returns and pay back taxes, interest and penalties," Chuck Rettig, IRS Commissioner, said in a statement. "The IRS is expanding our efforts involving virtual currency, including increased use of data analytics. One sneaky bear proved the lengths to which its kind would go to get some sweet sweet noms. A Colorado couple affixed a bird feeder to their backyard shed, in a kind move for birds. They knew that bears were prevalent in their area, so they also attached a bell to the feeder in the hopes that the noise would dissuade any non-bird creatures looking to feed.

According to The Guardian, Apple hires contractors to listen to Siri recordings in order to improve the accuracy and quality of the voice assistant.
These contractors "regularly hear confidential medical information, drug deals, and recordings of couples having sex, as part of their job providing quality control, or 'grading,'" the report claims.

Along the Huangpu River in the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyards in Shanghai, the hull modules of two huge new vessels have been captured in photographs taken by passengers in overflying airliners. Then early in July 2019, ground-level images of the construction leaked onto Chinese social media.
Measuring the length of two-and-half football fields and estimated to displace between 30,000-40,000 tons once in the water, the vessels appear to be the first of three Type 075 Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs), essentially moving naval bases that can carry dozens of helicopters and launch amphibious landing craft from their floodable well deck.

The ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and the Taliban are a "charade" designed simply to provide the U.S. a "face-saving way out of Afghanistan," former CIA deputy director Michael Morell tells Axios.
Why it matters: The Trump administration wants to move quickly toward a deal to end the war in Afghanistan. But Morell, who now hosts the Intelligence Matters podcast, is one of several experts and former officials warning that such a deal won't secure peace.

South Korea is in the early stages of developing a new, larger amphibious assault ship that could support short-takeoff and vertical-landing combat aircraft and plan to launch the ship toward the latter end of the next decade. For more than a year, the South Koreans have been considering a purchase of up to 20 F-35B Joint Strike Fighters, which would likely form the core of the air wing onboard this future vessel.
South Korea's decision to acquire the ship, presently known only as Landing Platform Helicopter-II, or LPH-II, reportedly came during a meeting that South Korean Army General Park Han Ki, the Chairman of the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff, held on July 12, 2019. LPH-II is a reference to the ship being a successor South Korean Navy's two Dokdo class LPHs.

SEOUL (Reuters) - The wedge of sea between Japan, Russia, and the Korean peninsula became a new flashpoint this week, with a regional airspace dispute, a seized fishing boat, and missile tests by North Korea aggravating longstanding tensions.
The patch of ocean is commonly known as the Sea of Japan, but South Korea argues it should be known by the more neutral name the East Sea.
The dispute over the name exemplifies the numerous conflicting interests in the area, which has been the scene of sometimes intense military and political brinkmanship.

Former Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson revealed to an audience last week that the X-37B spaceplane can pull off maneuvers in space that drives potential adversaries "nuts." Although maddeningly unspecific, experts believe she was referring to the X-37B's ability to change its orbit, throwing off both amateur and professional satellite watchers and making the spacecraft unpredictable.
According to Military.com, Wilson was speaking at the Apsen Security Forum when she remarked that the X-37B "can do an orbit that looks like an egg and, when it's close to the Earth, it's close enough to the atmosphere to turn where it is."
"Which means our adversaries don't know—and that happens on the far side of the Earth from our adversaries—where it's going to come up next. And we know that that drives them nuts. And I'm really glad about that."

ROME — Two American teenagers were jailed in Rome on Saturday as authorities carry out a murder investigation in the killing of an Italian police officer.
A detention order issued by prosecutors was shown on Italian state broadcaster RAI, naming the suspects as Gabriel Christian Natale Hjorth and Finnegan Lee Elder. The detention order didn’t give their ages, but says they were both born in San Francisco in 2000. Police earlier said they were 19.
Prosecutors said in the order that Elder is the main suspect, accusing him of repeatedly stabbing Carabinieri paramilitary policeman Mario Cerciello Rega, 35, who was investigating the theft of a bag after a drug deal gone wrong in Rome. Natale Hjorth is accused of using his bare hands to strike the officer’s partner, who wasn’t seriously injured in the attack.
Both suspects were also being investigated for attempted extortion. Elder’s lawyer, Francesco Codini, said his client exercised his right not to respond to questions during a detention hearing held Saturday in the Rome jail where the two teens are being kept. Natale Hjorth’s lawyer wasn’t immediately available for comment.
A judge at the detention hearing hasn’t ruled if the suspects will be kept in custody beyond an initial three-day period.
An Italian investigator who spoke on condition of anonymity since the probe was ongoing said that the pair had snatched the bag of a drug dealer in Rome after the man apparently gave them “a different substance” instead of cocaine.
The Carabinieri said the Americans demanded a 100-euro ($112) ransom and a gram of cocaine to return the bag. The alleged dealer called police, saying he had arranged a meeting with the thieves to get his bag and cellphone back. Police says there was a scuffle at the rendezvous site and the policeman was stabbed eight times, dying shortly afterward in the hospital.
The Carabinieri said video surveillance cameras and witnesses allowed them to quickly identify the two Americans and find them in a hotel near the scene of the slaying. Police said the two Americans were “ready to leave” Italy when they were found.
In a search of their hotel room, the Carabinieri said they found a long knife, possibly the one used to attack Cerciello Rega. Police said the knife had been hidden behind a panel in the room’s ceiling. Police also said they found clothes the two apparently were wearing during the attack.
The Carabinieri statement said the two Americans admitted responsibility after being questioned by prosecutors and faced with “hard evidence.”
PARIS — France is pushing ahead with a landmark tax on tech giants like Google and Facebook — despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of retaliatory tariffs on French wine.
After Trump slammed the “foolishness” of the tax in a tweet Friday and promised reciprocal action, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said “France will implement” it anyway.
According to Le Maire’s office, he added, “the universal taxation of digital activity is a challenge that concerns us all.” He said the tax is meant as a temporary measure pending negotiations on an international tax deal.
The 3% tax, which went into force this week, mainly concerns companies that use consumer data to sell online advertising.
It’s designed to stop multinationals from avoiding taxes by setting up European headquarters in low-tax EU countries. Currently, companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Airbnb and Uber pay very little tax on their significant business in countries like France.
The Trump administration says the tax is discriminatory against U.S. business.
But the tax targets any digital company with yearly global sales worth more than 750 million euros ($835 million) and French revenue exceeding 25 million euros ($27 million). It should affect about 30 companies, based in the U.S, China and Europe — including France.
The revenue threshold is supposed to allow more room for startups. France argues that tech giants are abusing their market dominance, notably through tax avoidance, and preventing others from a fair chance of competing.
Also, the tax only concerns revenues earned in France — not sales in the U.S. or elsewhere.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer began an investigation earlier this month to determine whether the tax is discriminatory or unreasonable and restricts U.S. commerce. Such a finding would allow Trump to levy retaliatory tariffs.
Trump derided French wines in his tweet, and later said he might hit them with retaliatory tariffs to French. He made a similar threat last year.
Trump insisted Friday that he has a good relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron and had just spoken with him.
After initially befriending the U.S. president despite their starkly different worldviews, Macron has increasingly stood up to the impulsive, America-first Trump on trade, climate change and Iran’s nuclear program.
The tech tax is just their latest battleground, and will be a key tension point when the two men meet at a Group of Seven summit in France next month.
France failed to persuade European Union partners to impose a Europe-wide tax on tech giants, but is now pushing for an international deal on it with the G-7 and the 34 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
MOSCOW — Russian police cracked down fiercely Saturday on demonstrators in central Moscow, beating some people and arresting more than 1,000 who were protesting the exclusion of opposition candidates from the ballot for Moscow city council. Police also stormed into a TV station broadcasting the protest.
Police wrestled with protesters around the mayor’s office, sometimes charging into the crowd with their batons raised. State news agencies Tass and RIA-Novosti cited police as saying 1,074 were arrested over the course of the protests, which lasted more than seven hours.
Along with the arrests of the mostly young demonstrators, several opposition activists who wanted to run for the council were arrested throughout the city before the protest. Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail for calling an unauthorized protest.
The protesters, who police said numbered about 3,500, shouted slogans including “Russia will be free!” and “Who are you beating?” One young woman was seen bleeding heavily after being struck on the head.
Helmeted police barged into Navalny’s video studio as it was conducting a YouTube broadcast of the protest and arrested program leader Vladimir Milonov. Police also searched Dozhd, an internet TV station that was covering the protest, and its editor-in-chief, Alexandra Perepelova, was ordered to undergo questioning at the Investigative Committee.
Police eventually dispersed protesters from the area of the mayor’s office, but many demonstrators reassembled at a square about a kilometer (half-mile) away, where new arrests began, with police beating some to the ground with wide truncheon swings while other demonstrators tried to push them away.
Before the protest, several opposition members were detained, including Ilya Yashin, Dmitry Gudkov, Lyubov Sobol and top Navalny associate Ivan Zhdanov. All were released later in the day; Zhdanov and Sobol went to the relocated protest and were detained again.
There was no immediate information on what charges the detainees might face.
Once a local, low-key affair, the September vote for Moscow’s city council has shaken up Russia’s political scene as the Kremlin struggles with how to deal with strongly opposing views in its sprawling capital of 12.6 million.
The decision by electoral authorities to bar some opposition candidates from running for having allegedly insufficient signatures on their nominating petitions had already sparked several days of demonstrations even before Saturday’s clashes in Moscow.
The city council, which has 45 seats, is responsible for a large municipal budget and is now controlled by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party. All of its seats, which have a five-year-term, are up for grabs in the Sept. 8 vote.

The idea to create IIITs in Andhra Pradesh came in April 2007, at the request of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Airtel had 320.38 users or 27.6 per cent market share.Vodafone Idea on Friday reported a decline in its customer base to 320 million in the first quarter of 2019-20 from 334.1 million in the March quarter."Our subscriber base declined to 320.0 million from 334.1 million in fourth quarter of financial year 2019 primarily due to customer churn following the introduction of 'service validity vouchers' in the prior quarters," Vodafone Idea said in a statement.Vodafone Idea had emerged as the largest telecom operator with over 400 million subscribers after Vodafone India and Idea Cellular completed the merger of telecom services business.However, the merged entity continued to lose customers every month and later it wrote off million of customers who did not subscribe to its minimum recharge plan.

MG Motor is a British brand with Chinese ownership. This shows in many ways — in simple things like me, a non-Chinese, heading the company. Our purchase head is Indian. Of the 1,200 employees, there are only 20 Chinese executives. We want MG Motor to be a good MNC embracing good corporate practices. We are here for the long term. We have bought, not leased, this office, investing Rs 150 crore in it. The vibe is very different. You will see people in smart casuals. We don't want to be stuck up, with too many dos and don'ts. We are trying to build a very different culture, more like a startup culture.India is a tough market, and you are already late.India is a challenging market. Maruti and Hyundai maintain a strong grip and MNCs have struggled. We are here to disrupt. The question we asked ourselves is, can we disrupt the market and what can we do differently to do it? It is too early to celebrate but we could not have been in a better position with 28,000 bookings and all sold out for 2019 in a bad market. Today, our dealers are the happiest. This did not happen by accident. Our biggest challenge now is to meet customer expectations.What's your India game plan?By 2022, we hope to have five products here and invest Rs 5,000 crore. With our e-vehicle EZS scheduled for launch, we want to pitch ourselves as an innovative MNC. Our strategy is built on three pillars — good employees, culture and dealer viability. For example, we will never talk about wholesale numbers (that the industry reports), but retail sales. We will have only one dealer per city, except in NCR and Mumbai. Our deal with dealers is: your profitability is our responsibility and you take care of customers. Here's what our 10-year plan broadly looks like. We see the next three-four years as the foundation years where we build our brand and presence while furthering localisation. Launch of an EV is part of that strategy. In the next three-four years, we will focus on controlling other levers like products and cost efficiencies. Before I joined, they had decided on their launch product — a hatchback. The sub-Rs 5 lakh is the largest car segment in India. But I questioned that strategy. At that time, XUV500 was the only model in that segment. Thanks to learnings from GM, I said let's not look at the volume segment. Let's get our fundamentals right, build consumer and product experience and establish the MG brand. This will allow us to keep volume and profitability pressures away. They listened. So Hector SUV is our debut vehicle.Let me give you another example. They designed a car with a grille that I wasn't very happy with and I wanted to change. They listened to me and reverted with three alternatives within two weeks. I can't imagine GM or any German or Japanese company agreeing to this and reverting, forget two weeks, even in two years. That's how fast they move.In the jobs market, Chinese companies don't have a good reputation.The toughest part of my job has been to get the best talent. So, you pay more to attract them. Our employee pitch is that we are part of the disruption story. As an automobile company, we want to think differently. We are actively hiring people from outside auto sector as well as we realise that they will look at things in a new way. Gender diversity is important. At our plant, 31% of workers are women. We are trying to engage with startups, too, to build an ecosystem around connected cars.The bosses in China are clear about what they want: a global team with a global work culture here. Unlike the western MNCs, sometimes they may not have the exposure. The language also makes things more difficult. But they are learning fast. 70413640 What is it like to work for a Chinese MNC?When I began talking to SAIC for this role, I had a few things on my wish list. Empowerment was one. I was clear that I will not do political management of the bosses. I report to the SAIC president. He reviews the business every month. The Chinese are hungry for success. They listen to the local market and offer HQ support that we need. They take time to trust you. But once they do, the good news is that they listen and don't second-guess you.You have worked with GM and now SAIC. How different are the two MNCs?In the US, the whole thing is governed by the Wall Street. It is all about individual shame and achievements. There is a big on quarter-on-quarter performance. This often means lack patience. At the cost of long term, you are focused on short term. India is a tough market. You need to first sow seeds, have patience and think long term before you can show results. Also, the auto industry today requires a lot of investment on future tech. Prioritisation becomes critical. India is a market with slim margins. So, companies need to make up their minds on whether they want to compete here and what they are seeking. You need a very clear strategy to crack open the market. While Asian companies, including Chinese, may not look sexy in the job market, they are more patient, committed and have a very strategic market view. The strategy is never individual-focused where things change with the boss. They are more institution-led. 70413654 How important is India for SAIC?India is very important as success here will open avenues in other emerging markets. This is a tough market; if you can deliver here you can easily move up the value chain in other markets. While global sales are now small (2.8 lakh in 2018), by 2025 we hope to have one million car sales overseas. India is the fifth largest global auto market. Returns may be rewarding if you get things right.What is SAIC's differentiation?The biggest is their hunger. For western MNCs, India may be important but my gut feeling is that for the Chinese, it is very, very important. Amid the US-China trade war, they want to accelerate their global expansion and figure how they can be relevant. With their lead on EV technology, they are also future-ready. So while GM and Ford are busy protecting their own turfs, Chinese firms are seeking global growth. Their work ethic and execution are fantastic. If the top executive takes a decision, the execution is swift. We set up our plant in 15 months. GM India was very headquarters-driven, with little empowerment here. Also, the leadership kept changing. Right product strategy and stability at the top are very important.What is your view on India's EV strategy?We will bring in MG EZS soon. Right now we are not able to crack the Rs 5-10 lakh market. Unless one has a good meaningful solution in that segment, EVs won't work here. We require government support like building charging infrastructure etc. Leaving it to OEMs entirely will not work. What is life after work for you?I am a fitness freak. I did half-marathon and will do it again in October. Between yoga, squash, run and weekend golf, I spend about an hour every to keep myself fit. I just can't afford to fall (laughs). Thanks to my kids, who are fitness freaks, I eat healthy. I learn a lot from them, about technology and how to manage millennials. You've had a few domestic number-one hits and performed on a handful of Bollywood soundtracks, but the likes of South Korea's BTS and Psy – other artists who don't primarily sing in English – have something you don't: a viral YouTube smash that breaks some sort of record. Most views in a day, for instance.Going viral can seem a tall order, but not as tall as you'd think, given some of YouTube's peculiarities. Especially if your name is Badshah. Sony Music India declared in a press release last week that the rapper's new video, Paagal, had overtaken BTS's "Boy With Luv" and Taylor Swift's "Me!" to become YouTube's most-watched video in a 24-hour period, with 75 million views.That's quite some company for an artist without much of a profile outside of his home market. It prompted accusations from social media users that Badshah had somehow gamed the system. And there are weaknesses in Google's advertising setup that might have made that possible. If anyone can exploit them, this poses a conundrum to Alphabet Inc., the parent company of both Google and YouTube.One major discrepancy with the other superstars lies in Badshah's engagement numbers. Taylor Swift and BTS have significantly more likes as a proportion of total views than Badshah does, and considerably fewer dislikes. They're simply punching in different leagues. It suggests that people aren't watching the videos in quite the same way. What's more, YouTube is yet to issue a press release confirming the viewership record, as it has in the other cases. Just last week it teamed up with Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group to announce that Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" had totted up more than a billion views.Also: Paagal just ain't that good a tune. It entered the U.K.'s Asian Music Chart at a mediocre number 31.But the biggest clue comes from Badshah himself. In response to online complaints that he deployed bots to boost views, the singer offered a more straightforward answer in an Instagram post: he used Google's own advertising platform to promote the video, which is a puzzling mix of L.A. skylines and scantily clad dancers cutting shapes in a warehouse.He didn't specify which of Google's bevy of ad products he used. But his response hints at a way that artists (and their labels) can exploit YouTube to their advantage: the public view count doesn't differentiate between views generated by paying to be a pre-roll advertisement on other clips, or organic views that people have found by other means. The approach would circumvent the need for a bot farm repeatedly to check out the song. Google has some safety nets to make it harder for bots to tot up visits anyway.Buying pre-roll publicity is also easier in India, where ad impressions are a lot cheaper than other corners of the world, including the U.S. It's not clear how many of those translate into actual views – Google doesn't reveal the time threshold for one to count (whether it's five, 10 or 30 seconds, for instance). That's significantly cheaper than getting in front of a similarly sized audience in the U.S. or U.K., she said. A spend of around $1.5 million could well be required to hit 60 million impressions there.Does this shine a particularly bad light on Badshah and Sony Corp.'s Indian music arm? Not really. The system exists, and if they used it, they did so successfully and to their advantage. They wouldn't be the first in the history of recorded music, or indeed of YouTube promotion. And once the view count hit a sizable level, the organic audience would start to pick up too. Sony Music India has 27 million followers of its own, but most of its videos have far fewer than one million views.Instead, it looks like this is another lesson that the best way to generate engagement on social media is to pay for it. The platforms hold all the keys.YouTube itself is in a pickle. It can't be seen to condone any gaming of its ads platform to generate a hit. But it also won't want to dissuade advertisers from paying for viewership. That's literally what pays the bills. Next best solution? Just keep quiet and hope it all blows over.
How the realty sector is being plagued by severe cash crunchThe Worli-Lower Parel stretch in South Central Mumbai, once a vaunted spot for premium realty, has emerged as something of a problem zone for real estate developers, particularly for those building luxury residences. Sales are slow, and some projects now look unlikely to ever be completed.Just last week, Indiabulls Housing Finance (IBHF) auctioned off the Palais Royale project in Worli for `705 crore after the developer, Shree Ram Urban Infrastructure, defaulted on its debt repayments to IBHF. The 320-metre tall building with 56 floors was envisioned as India's tallest tower, housing luxury apartments costing upwards of Rs 25 crore apiece.The Indiabulls group itself is into realty and has built some landmark towers in the region. Indiabulls Finance Centre (IFC), where the group is headquartered, is one. IBHF vice-chairman and managing director Gagan Banga works out of the 17th floor, an office with a panoramic view of the massive realty development going on all around. Today, only one crane can be seen working in the vicinity, however.When Banga met ET Magazine in mid-July, he had just concluded a meeting with a bulge-bracket private equity (PE) firm at a nearby hotel. PE firms such as Brookfield, Blackstone and KKR have been buying out commercial real estate in prime locations in India. IBHF had facilitated the Rs 2,500-crore sale of One BKC in Bandra Kurla Complex, a property developed by IBHF borrower Radius, to Blackstone in June. Blackstone had also picked up equity stakes in the group's iconic towers IFC and Indiabulls One in 2018. The group has other properties to sell, including residential blocks in Lower Parel.However, a much bigger deal is simmering — Indiabulls is looking to exit realty altogether by selling a controlling stake in its real estate arm. Sitting in his office and sipping on warm water, Banga explained how the group is now focused on turning IBHF into a bank. The group already owns a 15% stake in a bank in the UK, and wants to merge its housing finance company into Laksmi Vilas Bank. To get the Reserve Bank of India approval proval, Indiabulls wants to move the real estate business, which normally has serious perception issues and political risks, away from the group.The Palais Royale distress sale apart, last week also saw quite a few key developments in Indian realty. The Supreme Court ordered that Noida-based realty developer Amrapali Group be de-registered by the Real Estate Regulatory Authority, and asked state-run construction company NBCC to complete the projects. In Mumbai, the Piramal Group informed investors that it was extending its realty-focused fund Indiareit Fund Scheme V by a year, exercising an available option to give itself another year for exiting some of the projects it is invested in.Earlier this month, the Supreme Court took up a petition filed by more than 100 builders challenging amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code that accorded homebuyers the same status as financial creditors.Realty in India is in the midst of a churn that feels markedly different from the difficulties it faced in recent years on account of slack demand. It is reeling from a severe cash crunch created by the liquidity squeeze in non-banking finance companies — the Indian shadow banks.The defaults by IL&FS in August 2018 and subsequently by housing finance company DHFL triggered a squeeze that shut off two major sources of funds for the industry — the PSU banks and the commercial papers-based lending by the mutual funds industry.For almost a decade now, Indian realty, especially in the residential segment, has been leaning on the shadow bankers to refinance its loans, keeping them afloat in the face of flagging demand. Today, demand remains muted, funds are much harder to come by, and the NBFC loan books loaded with realty loans are no longer attractive for loan-asset traders, creating a multi-layer squeeze.In late June, credit-rating agency ICRA downgraded Piramal Capital and Housing Finance as well as Edelweiss Capital for the fear of defaults in their realty loan books. A month later, ICRA's own standing has taken a tumble on its dealings with IL&FS.Going by the Book How big is the problem? For instance, at Piramal Capital and Housing Finance, out of the Rs 56,000-crore loan book, Rs 40,000 crore has been lent to realty. The Ajay Piramal-led group also has a realty arm, which has invested in big projects in central Mumbai.Banga of Indiabulls points out that the problem is much bigger today. He says: "It is no longer a liquidity crisis. It is a consumption crisis that will affect all sectors if not managed now and become a solvency crisis."Property consultants Anarock said last week that there are 1.74 lakh homes stuck in different phases across seven cities in India. Out of these, 68% are already sold, which means home owners find themselves in a limbo, while having to pay EMIs on their bank loans. In Mumbai and Delhi alone, stalled houses add up to Rs 1.6 lakh crore in value.Large global investment firms such as Blackstone are scouting for value deals in this difficult environment for builders, as are others such as KKR, Blackrock and Brookfield. Distress funds such as SSG and Apollo are also sniffing around for deals.However, most of this interest is around office spaces — commercial real estate, whose dynamics are different from residential properties. Commercial buildings are sold only after they are ready and cannot use buyers' funds, unlike residential units. Therefore supply is limited, at least for two more years.A CEO of a large PE firm, who asked not to be named, said the rental yield from a commercial building at 8-9% of its price makes way more sense for investors compared with the rental yield of a residential building at 2-3%.Another Mumbai builder, who has struck a PE deal, is Niranjan Hiranadani. Brookfield has acquired commercial space from his companies in Powai for $1 billion. Hiranandani now also heads the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. He told ET Magazine that the Hiranandani Group avoided the Lower Parel area of Mumbai, focusing instead on Powai and then areas such as Panvel and then moving out to other cities such as Chennai, as it prefers to develop an entire area, building schools, malls, offices and residences at the same place. 70413688 " Price cuts are already happening, but this is not the bottom yet . In many areas, prices are set for a crash" Gulam Zia, executive director, Knight FrankHe, too, foresees a real crisis. "There has been 69 lakh apartments sanctioned under PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana), and 46 lakh have started. But how will they be built now? Where are the funds? The banks are sitting with Rs 175,000 crore of money that they are refusing to lend to real estate." Hiranandani adds that the GST rule that has incentivised sale of buildings with an occupancy certificate with zero tax has also pushed buyers to delay their purchase.There is another reason that private equity players as well as individuals are shying away from buying luxury residences in India. Hopes for a price correction are in the air. And once a correction starts, there is no guessing the bottom.Prateek Jhawar, MD of Avendus Capital, points out that realtors never drop prices in their existing buildings even if they have to wait for years to clear their inventory of flats. 70413674 " A project in trouble has obviously seen some siphoning off or misuse of funds. "Imagine a builder with costs of building an apartment at Rs 30 lakh and a price point of Rs 50 lakh. If there are no buyers, the builder takes a loan at say 23% interest to refinance his current loans. It allowed them to hold on and the high margin means there are enough profits to be made even at this high interest rate. The NBFCs sourcing their funds at 8-9% through short term commercial papers from mutual funds and insurance industries also had a good deal. They got huge collateral security, too, often two or three times the value of the loan." 70413467 "It is no longer a liquidity crisis. As the loan books look like problematic assets in the absence of sales, the NBFCs have a classic asset-liability mismatch on their hands. 70413498 "It will take time, but the NBFCs will have to come back to lending. The banks too will ramp up. The customer too will be back when he feels confident that the projects will be completed" Yesh Nadkarni, MD-real estate, KKRPiramal Capital, which plans to bring down its realty exposure from 73% of its book to 50%, and also reduce large single-borrower exposure to less than 10% by March 2020, has already cut its loans to the Lodha Group, probably the largest developer in Mumbai. According to reports, in May, Piramal Group managed to sell Rs 500 crore worth of loan assets to Goldman Sachs.Reports also suggest that it managed to bring in fresh funds into Piramal Capital last week. The company declined comment as it is in a silent period pending announcement of its first quarter results. The Lodha Group, which has now deferred a listing of its shares through an initial public offering at least thrice, also declined to participate in the story. 70413639 The New LandlordsBlackstone has invested more than $5 billion in real estate in India. Almost 70% of it is in commercial real estate and the restBrookfield has invested in multiple assets, including in real estate, in India. It includes a $1 billion deal in Mumbai's Powai, apart from two hotel deals including the Leela hotelsA bunch of distress funds like Apollo & SSG are also looking at possible realty deals, especially as new buyout opportunities are likely to come up nowKKR is another large investor in real estate in India and is also bullish about the sector right nowLooming InsolvencyWhile insolvency stares at many realtors, especially the ones that have high component of residential realty in their portfolio, the goings on at the insolvency courts are not looking too promising either.Srini Sriniwasan, the managing director of Kotak Investment Advisors, told ET Magazine that it is not fair to expect much from the IBC process. He explained that a residential realty project that is stuck has obviously used up all the money paid by homeowners. 70413447 "Now do you expect a new developer to come in and complete the project, but for no cash – because the homeowner has already paid up? A project in trouble has obviously seen some siphoning off or misuse of funds." Sriniwasan also questioned the wisdom of making a homeowner in a project equal to a financial creditor. "A financial creditor in the IBC process is expected to take a haircut in his outstanding loan to salvage the project. If the homeowner asks for the same status, what will he do for a haircut? Give up a room or pay up more money to get his apartment?"Yesh Nadkarni, MD and head of real estate at PE firm KKR that has been active in the Indian residential and office realty market as a lender, says that while the current conditions remain challenging, the market, particularly residential, will bottom out as supply-demand forces work out. "It will take time, but the NBFCs will come back to lending, and so will the banks, as they get recapitalised." He adds that the real estate sector is important as it is a big job creator. 70413449 As a result, there is much hope pinned on the government, too. But did Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman do enough for the sector in her maiden budget on July 5? She announced a model tenancy law and extra tax incentives for acquiring affordable houses. However, critics say that measures to back acquisition of top-rated NBFC loan books by banks is meaningless as the top NBFCs have been able to raise bonds, even in this market and are not starved of cash. However, the budget announced a housing for all target for 2022, which means the government intends the sector to get going three years ahead. 70413622 As Nadkarni and Hiranandani point out, the government will need to prod the PSU banks to lend to realty again and open the taps that have been shut. And Banga points out that many markets in India are still doing well. Hyderabad and Bengaluru in particular or even far-flung Mumbai suburbs have seen steady sales. A decade or so back, private equity itself had turned lenders to realty sector. In different phases since then, stock market profits, PSU banks money and the shadow-banking route have kept the realtors going. With all that turned off, are we still looking at ways for going back to business as usual or is there a paradigm shift happening now? 70413494 Nikhil Shah, India MD of turnaround specialist Alvarez and Marsal, feels the way out of the residential realty mess is a price correction, discounts and haircuts for lenders to attract new money to problematic markets.Gulam Zia, executive director of property advisory firm Knight Frank, often wonders if his own decision to buy an apartment in Mumbai was correct and whether it ties him down to the city permanently. He notes that the new generation prefers to rent. Goldman Sachs has invested in student housing in Manipal, Zia points out, and adds that players like Airbnb and Zolo are also becoming active players in student and worker residences across the country. 70413617 Zia adds that modern mass transport infrastructure can always help keep realty prices in check, and prevent a build-up in a concentrated area, as people can stay away from their workplace and travel to work in a relatively short period of time. Price cuts are already happening, Zia says.In Mumbai, in the last three years, there has been a 12% downward revision of prices he says. If one adds discounts and inflation, it should be 25-30%. Some new developers have tried and priced apartments at `1 crore in the middle of super luxury offerings — at least 600 of them are there. "This is not the bottom yet. The prices in many areas are set for a crash," says Zia."Banks Giving Less and Less Money to Real Estate Sector" 70413534 Niranjan Hiranandani has been heading the National Real Estate Development Council since September 2017. In an interview to ET Magazine, co-founder of the Hiranandani Group says there is a need for more banking licences to solve the liquidity crisis. Edited excerpts:Will IBC be able to resolve real estate insolvencies and revive the sector?Currently, the situation is complicated. It is not just the IBC. A homebuyer has many options and can approach the consumer court or RERA [Real Estate Regulatory Authority]. Today, we have different customers and lenders approaching different authorities. If we can focus on one, it will be easier to find a solution. I think RERA should tackle this since it is designed for real estate and the problems homebuyers face. IBC, on the other hand, is designed to return money to lenders.How do you see the current liquidity crunch?In the last three years, we have seen banks giving less and less money to real estate. Funding is not available to the sector and because of this, the oil in the economy is drying up. We have to be clear: this is not an issue of liquidity only for the real estate sector. We have to seek a solution so that the banks start to lend more.What can be the solution?The Reserve Bank of India will surely try to bring in more liquidity into the market through the banks and non-banking finance companies. I also feel more banking licences should be given out and there should be more nimble-footed but strong private sector banks that can then lend to small and medium enterprises and real estate developers.
On a Tuesday afternoon, Lata Mangeshkar's sonorous voice in Jaane kyon log mohabbat kiya karte hai, from the 1971 film Mehboob Ki Mehndi, helps Sulthan Ahmed unwind while waiting for customers in Bengaluru. The middle-aged autorickshaw driver who has parked near the shopping hub of Commercial Street is glad he spent Rs 2,500 a year ago to buy a smartphone, his first.The YouTube app on his Motorola, propped up on the dashboard, is mainly to "play old songs, and that too when I am waiting for customers," he says. But it does not take long for him to reveal that he uses the free video-streaming app for more. Apart from videos on health tips, he also watches videos comparing the prices of items such as daily groceries, schoolbags and "fancy items" for his wife. Typing the right words in the search bar is a problem for the autorickshaw driver who has studied till Class V. So he banks on voice search. "Sometimes my 10-year-old daughter helps me," he adds.A couple of hundred metres away, Imran Khan is also on a break from attending to customers at his shop that sells costume jewellery and accessories, using the time to watch videos on his phone. Khan, 31, started watching videos extensively on his smartphone only in the last couple of years. He watches comedy scenes from movies, reports on the rumblings in Karnataka's Vidhan Soudha and reviews of mobile phones in the vernacular. "I got to know after watching a video that my new phone works better if I keep the WiFi option switched off," says Khan.70412903 What has changed for people like Khan and Ahmed in the last few years is the dramatic crash in mobile phone data prices, sparked by Reliance Jio when it launched 4G plans in September 2016 for as little as Rs 149 for 28 days. The low entry point helped Jio wireless internet to grow its subscriber base from 100 million in 2016-17 to 307 million in 2018-19, according to Mary Meeker's Internet Trends report for 2019. Jio's rivals had no choice but to offer proportionately lower tariffs, making India the country with the cheapest data plans. Mobile data consumption leapt from 20 crore GB a month before Jio's launch to 370 crore GB per month after that, while data prices slid from Rs 250 per GB to less than Rs 15 per GB, according to online video analytics firm Vidooly. This statistic from media agency Zenith's report, Online Video Forecasts 2018, is telling: if Indians spent 2 minutes a day on an average watching online videos in 2012, they were watching close to an hour a day in 2018.This year, that figure is set to touch 67 minutes a day, the global average. Video streaming is estimated to account for 75% of mobile internet use in India by 2021, according to app analytics firm App Annie.70412910 This meant for many Indians, video has become a window to the internet. At the centre of this shift is YouTube's video streaming app in India, which today has 265 million active users a month. While the market is volatile, there are pockets of opportunities in the mid and smallcap segments. This would be the time to invest in good quality companies with a two to three year time horizon, says Shibani Sircar Kurian, SVP & Head-Equity Research, Kotak Mahindra AMC. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW. We have kick-started the first quarter earnings season and while a lot of the market direction was received from the earnings cues, the market once again shifted the focus to the budget announcements over the surcharge for FPIs, the auto slowdown, the entire FII sell off as well. July has seen a lot of FII selling off. Do you believe that would gain prominence as opposed to quarterly numbers and fundamentals?The budget caused its own volatility but now the market has clearly shifted focus to earnings. From an earnings perspective, it is a slightly challenging quarter, given the kind of growth and demand outlook that we are facing at this point in time. If you look at it for a year as a whole, we still believe that we are fairly on track to report mid teens earnings growth and therefore coming off almost three years of no earnings growth. This would possibly be a year where you start seeing better earnings growth trajectory. However, it has been a mixed bag across sectors. There have been some good ones, some bad ones and some earnings downgrades as well, but clearly the market is focused now on fundamentals and how things move from here on. The earnings growth and the earnings trajectory and the numbers to come will play a key role in determining the future course of action that the market really takes from here. HDFC Bank has been a very stable company. Quarter after quarter it has given inline set of numbers with very few red flags. Would you believe that is the case in this quarter as well?While I cannot talk specifically on a company, I can give you our understanding of how the consumer retail lending space and how the private sector banking space is really panning out. While there has been some moderation in terms of loan growth for the banks that have really reported numbers, the market share shift from the public sector to the private sector or even from the NBFCs to the private sector is continuing. The banks which have reported numbers are clearly growing at a pace faster than the industry and so that is one. Secondly, while management commentary has flagged off some risks specifically on the consumer lending side or the unsecured consumer book, the agri book clearly has not led to a significant rise in terms of credit cost as of now. What we are seeing is precautionary in terms of the management commentary and therefore may be higher provisioning in some cases. Having said that, the private sector banking pack as a whole shows clear opportunities here because of two things -- the shift in market share between loans and deposits from one segment of the banking space to the private sector banking space is still continuing. These banks are well capitalised and therefore in this kind of a scenario where there are concerns on liquidity, capital is the key and clearly from a balance sheet perspective, these banks are still reporting return ratios which are fairly healthy and these return ratios have not really been impaired in a big way. Also one pocket of opportunity that we see here is that a lot of the private sector corporate banks went through a lot of stress over the last three-four years, given their exposure to some of the large corporates. However, over the last few years, there have been changes in terms of risk management practices and our belief is as you go into the second half of the year, you will see credit cost starting to normalise and that leading to improvement in terms of their return ratios. While there are certain pockets of concern on the banking and financial services space, specifically on the NBFC and the HFC side, there are still pockets of opportunity within that sector. United Spirits and Asian Paints results are out. For all means and purposes, these could be considered consumer facing B2C companies. Do you believe it is not done as badly as one would have feared?I would tend to agree with you that while volume growth has come off, but clearly we have been seeing very high volume growth and in this kind of an environment, it was expected that there would be some deceleration and that has really panned out. Plus the margins have been positive. Clearly, there is some pricing power and costs have been under control. All of this has led to a better margin profile. The issue with the consumption space is a two-fold one. Commentary on demand still continues to remain slightly muted and valuations are stretched. We are approaching the consumption sector in a stock-specific manner. Clearly, there are opportunities in this space where we are see growth continuing as well as valuations being reasonable. Some of these names are clearly featuring in our portfolios but it is a little stock specific, given the fact that valuations are stretched in pockets. Do you believe that it is the China factor that is the niggling factor for Tata Motors?Again without getting into stock-specific names, our view on auto has been cautious now for a while. We believe there are three-four factors which are contributing to the downturn. One of course is there has been a demand slowdown. Two, There is a rural slowdown given the fact that rural income have not been growing. Thirdly the cost of ownership of vehicle has clearly gone up and regulatory changes are resulting in that cost going up further. Fourthly, there is this issue of shared mobility and how much impact that is having on demand. The key question is to discuss whether this is a cyclical slowdown in autos that we are seeing or whether this is a slightly more structural slowdown. The answer is still very unclear and as a result of which we are still watching out and are cautious on the segment. A few key leading indicators that we will keep in mind while we are approaching the segment is a)to see how discounts are panning out and if there are signs of discounts coming off which means demand is coming back. Secondly, inventory levels in the system are still very high and if that starts to moderate again, then there are indicators that demand is coming back but at this point in time, it does look like we could be in for a few more months of weakness. We are still cautious on the sector. For investors with a longer term time horizon, which sectors should they look at? What looks good from a fundamental perspective?We find that there is a significant amount of opportunity to buy stocks in the mid and smallcap segments. One has to be selective but since the beginning of 2018 till now, the correction in the mid and smallcap space has been very severe and sharp and in fact today the valuations of the midcaps are trading at lower levels than what it was even in 2014. As a result, this is possibly an opportune time to look at high quality, high growth midcap stocks with a two to three year kind of a time horizon. However, one has to be very careful when you are doing stock picking clearly look at companies which are growing, which are gaining market share which have cleaned balance sheet and low leverage and which are able to generate high return ratios. However, there are a lot of opportunities. Some of the sectors that we like one is on the capital goods side. Capacity utilisation levels have been inching up and now are close to long- term averages. If you look at data in terms of order flows as well, there has been a pick up. While this is not private sector greenfield capex, but clearly capacity augmentation has resulted in order flow improvement which is resulting in some positive up move specifically with the capital goods space so that is one segment that we are watching out for. A proxy for capital goods is cement where clearly realisations have been positive. We need to see whether this trend of improved pricing power stays or the kind of price decline that we have seen in the recent past continues or whether the cement companies get back on track and the volume growth also holds up. But cement is a space that we like. On the financial side we are positive on the private sector corporate banks where there are clear signs of normalisation of return ratios as well as credit cost which will lead to better profitability and another segment that we like is on the life insurance space where we have clearly seen a trend where there is improvement in terms of growth of new business as well as margins because of the changing mix of the product profile where companies moving more towards protection and annuities which are higher margin products resulting in better profitability. While the market is volatile, clearly there are pockets of opportunities specifically in the mid and the smallcap segments. If one is careful and buys good quality companies this would be the time to invest with a two to three year kind of a time horizon.

But one plot line in the profit story bears scrutiny.Stocks in the S&P 500 just rose for the sixth time in eight weeks, jumping another 1.7 per cent and finishing at a record. They did so during a period in which weakening company outlooks led analysts to cut earnings estimates for the rest of the year. By one measure, guidance for the third quarter has been some of the worst in a decade.The obvious offset to the dimming profit picture is Jerome Powell's Federal Reserve, whose newfound dovishness has driven a $6 trillion rally in American equities during 2019. Investors preparing to celebrate a rate cut when Powell & Co. meet next week might ask themselves if profit growth is one of the things crying out for stimulus."It's not only about interest rates," said Rich Sega, global chief investment strategist for Hartford, Connecticut-based Conning, which has about $145 billion in assets under management. "People have been scaling back their forward guidance. It points out a potential conflict." 70406758 To be sure, earnings have looked just fine for the quarter ended in June. The middle-aged autorickshaw driver who has parked near the shopping hub of Commercial Street is glad he spent Rs 2,500 a year ago to buy a smartphone, his first.The YouTube app on his Motorola, propped up on the dashboard, is mainly to "play old songs, and that too when I am waiting for customers," he says. But it does not take long for him to reveal that he uses the free video-streaming app for more. Apart from videos on health tips, he also watches videos comparing the prices of items such as daily groceries, schoolbags and "fancy items" for his wife. Typing the right words in the search bar is a problem for the autorickshaw driver who has studied till Class V. So he banks on voice search. "Sometimes my 10-year-old daughter helps me," he adds.A couple of hundred metres away, Imran Khan is also on a break from attending to customers at his shop that sells costume jewellery and accessories, using the time to watch videos on his phone. Khan, 31, started watching videos extensively on his smartphone only in the last couple of years. He watches comedy scenes from movies, reports on the rumblings in Karnataka's Vidhan Soudha and reviews of mobile phones in the vernacular.
