Chaos Theory: The Secret World's Tokyo barrier Posted: 26 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Horror, Real-Life, Opinion, The Secret World, Chaos Theory, Buy-to-Play Blue Mountain: On the road through The Secret World adventures, this was the zone that would make or break many players. It's the point when you had to really start crafting your decks more carefully and applying synergies. Not all who felt the blow of this particular skill check powered through, making it a barrier to continuing on to Egypt and Transylvania as well as completing the story mission. Well, now there's a new barrier in town: Tokyo. As much as I had looked forward to the Issue #9 content, and as much as I am enjoying the content now that it is here, I have to admit that Tokyo is the granddaddy of barriers. Not only are there barriers to getting to the content, but there are some to enjoying it once you get there too. And any one of them might cause players to give up on Tokyo and The Secret World before experiencing the whole update. So to help folks avoid smashing into any barriers unexpectedly and leaving bruises, let me give you the scoop on what lies ahead. WildStar unveils Strain-themed customization options Posted: 26 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Galleries, Screenshots, Patches, Previews, News Items, WildStar, Subscription, Buy-to-Play It is the doom that slumbers beneath Nexus. It is dread and loathing. It is a vile plague that both the Dominion and Exiles are desperately striving to purge. It's your new housing decor! Yes, the WildStar fashion police have spoken, and with the game's first major update, covering your home in the tentacles, eyeballs, and various protrusions of the Strain is all the rage this year. Also covering your clothing and mounts, because at that point why not, right? Players will be able to pick up new plugs and decor for houses, new costume items and dyes for their personal equipment, a new hoverboard, and new mount customizations, all of which should make your character look completely Strain-infested. If that's what you want, at least. No word on what functions the new plugs will perform, but we're betting it'll be gross. Take a look at the official drop page for a few more pictures of these customizations in action. Trion details ArcheAge's patron status, APEX system Posted: 26 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Business Models, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, ArcheAge, Sandbox Trion has detailed its plans for Patron status in ArcheAge, which it says takes a cue from the company's experience in converting RIFT to a free-to-play business model. Patron status is basically ArcheAge's premium service tier, though Trion says it isn't required to play and instead "adds to the fun." Patrons will get: o. Bonus online Labor Point regeneration (10 per 5 minutes) o. Offline Labor Point regeneration (5 per 5 minutes) o. Increased maximum Labor Points cap (5000 maximum) o. 10% bonus to all Experience gained through combat or labor usage o. 10% discount on Marketplace purchases o. 5 Loyalty Tokens per day for use in the Loyalty Store (awarded on first login of the day) o. Ability to claim land by placing farms and houses o. Ability to pay in-game taxes on owned property o. Ability to post auctions on the Auction House by default Trion has also announced APEX, an in-game item that grants credits when consumed and that can be sold on the game's auction house or traded between players. Much like EVE Online's PLEX, APEX will allow "industrious" ArcheAge players to pay for Patron status via their gameplay rather than real money. There's more to Trion's announcement, too, including possible F2P house ownership, so click through the links below to read the rest! The Daily Grind: Does your guild stay together between MMOs? Posted: 26 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Culture, Events (Real-World), Guilds, MMO Industry, Opinion, Massively Meta, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous I can't remember the exact moment that my MMO guildies collectively realized, hey, we are pretty good friends and we like each other enough to play other games together so maybe let's do that, but that's more or less what happened. After a few years of trying to figure out our place in the MMO world, we settled down into a pattern: The same core folks migrate to new and old games together and check them out as a cohesive unit. This year has been a bit different, though, as the big releases haven't enticed enough of us or have made it so difficult for our international group to play on the same server that it's not been worth the trouble. What about you folks -- does your guild stick together from MMO to MMO? Or do you join a new guild for a fresh game? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Daily Grind: Does your guild stay together between MMOs? originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 26 Jun 2014 08:00:00 EST. Entropy discounts Founder's Packs for Steam Sale Posted: 25 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, News Items, Promotions The Steam Summer Sale is that glorious time of year when we drop money on games that we subsequently won't remember purchasing until months later, leaving us collectively scratching our heads and asking when we bought these titles. So how'd you like to add an early access MMO to that pile of games you won't remember you have? All three of the Entropy Founder's Packs are now available at a 33% discount until the end of the Summer Sale on June 30th. The sale coincides with a recent update to the game introducing the gladiatorial combat sport known as NOVA, a free-for-all brawl where five people enter and only one leaves. The smallest package available gives players access to two character slots as well as full game access, with higher tiers including a variety of extra ships, more character slots, and bonus character creator options. If it sounds like it's right at your speed, jump in on the deal before the end of the month. We've included the latest video interview with the devs after the break. Sort of. The game is free-to-play, but if you feel like dropping $60 on the game before it launches, you can pick up the Hero's Pack, filled with all sorts of nice little prizes for your future martial artist characters. Purchasing the Hero's Pack nets you a special mount, costume, and apprentice. You also nab 10 Mithril (which can be sold for a mountain of in-game currency), 600 East Sector Treasures (used for summoning a boss), and a ring (used for wearing a ring and getting a stat boost). Players who purchase now will get early access to the open beta as well. If you're enjoying the closed test or just like the idea and really want to buy into the game now, the option is open. Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade's founder program goes live Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, Trailers, Video, Business Models, Events (Real-World), News Items, Free-to-Play, Warhammer 40k, Miscellaneous The founder and pre-order program for the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade MMO is now officially live. Founder tiers available start with the $40 Warrior Pack (which includes the game, early module access, 40,000 game points, and special perks) and run the price scale up to the $450 (and currently on sale) Xenos pack, which includes the game and early access along with 610,000 game points and even more special perks. Not into forking over your cash just yet? At E3 a few weeks ago, Behavior Online told Massively that at launch (expected in 2016), Eternal Crusade will boast a hybrid model, with a $40 buy-to-play option and a free-to-play option that restricts players to the Ork Boyz faction. The cash shop will sell "pay-to-be-cool" cosmetics and skins, the devs said. The studio also issued a new teaser trailer to coincide with the program launch. We've included it below. Choose My Adventure: Final thoughts on WildStar Posted: 25 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, New Titles, Opinion, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, WildStar, Subscription This week marks my last stint with WildStar for Choose My Adventure, and I'll be giving not only my overall impressions of the game for this final installment but a run-down of my thoughts on the first few levels of each class and path. When the fantasy/sci-fi MMO launched earlier this month, I had no idea what to expect. I had watched the preview trailers and knew the general premise of the game's feel, but didn't dive too deeply into game mechanics or lore because I like to discover these things myself as I go. WildStar is the perfect game for this, in my opinion, because it's full of surprises... in a good way. Oculus slams ZeniMax in latest legal statement Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: MMO Industry, News Items, Legal, Virtual Reality The war of words continues between Oculus VR and ZeniMax. The latest salvo comes courtesy of a legal statement issued by the former in which it denies ZeniMax's claim that key tech was developed by John Carmack before he left ZeniMax for Oculus. "By deliberately misstating some facts and omitting others, ZeniMax makes the incredible assertion that it, a videogame software publishing company for personal computers and consoles like the Sony PlayStation, invented and developed a virtual reality hardware and software system," the statement reads, in part. It goes on to state that the Oculus VR headset tech was developed by Palmer Luckey and that the "lawsuit is nothing more than ZeniMax seeking to correct for a massive missed opportunity through the assertion of meritless litigation."
