War 40k
Miguel Caron is a passionate man. The former Funcom Canada CEO has moved on from The Secret World to lead the team developing Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade, and he's not shy about showing the world what's happening behind the scenes. In fact, he recently showed off an impromptu video of a fan playing the pre-alpha build at Chicago's Comic & Entertainment Expo.

Total transparency was the theme of our two-hour-long Skype chat this week as the Behavior Interactive studio head talked to me about everything from pleasing 40K lore fanatics to avoiding the "public quest curse" that plagued the original Warhammer Online MMO.

Pearl Abyss attending E3, looking for NA Black Desert publisher

Steparu's latest and, for now, last Black Desert beta review has been published. It highlights castle sieges and endgame PvP, world raid bosses, and more. Interestingly, the writeup posits that the final version of ArcheAge "offers a much more vast open area with more freedom," though it's worth noting that Black Desert has plenty of room to grow since the observation was made in the game's second closed beta phase.

Steparu also reports that Pearl Abyss is attending next month's E3 in search of a North American publisher.

The Daily Grind: Do you skip tutorials?

    EVE Online UI
Gamasutra recently ran a developer op-ed on getting players to read in-game text. It was focused more on character dialogue than on tutorials, but it got me thinking about the seemingly hopeless task of designing a tutorial for the millions of players who probably ignore tutorials.

Veteran MMO players may have even more incentive to skip tutorials than most, as the genre's presentation and mechanics haven't changed much at all over the past decade or more. So, how about it, Massively readers? Do you skip MMO tutorials? If not, what's the last good one you learned from?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EVE Evolved: Eleven years of EVE Online

        EVE Evolved title image
It seems that every year another few MMOs have closed their doors or convert to free-to-play business models to stay afloat. EVE Online has always enjoyed a level of insulation from these market trends elsewhere in the genre, and just last week on May 6th it celebrated its 11th year of year-on-year subscription growth. Following on from my previous column celebrating the EVE Evolved column's sixth year of operation, this week I'll be summarising all the major EVE news stories throughout the year.

It's been a big year for EVE fans, one that many of us can be proud to have been a part of. The EVE community turned its financial wizardry toward the real world and raised over $190,000 US in relief aid following a typhoon hitting the Philippines, and CCP even built a monument dedicated to the community. Several massive player battles once again put EVE on the global media's radars, and the Odyssey and Rubicon expansions revitalised the game for explorers and PvPers alike. But not everyone can hold his heads up high this year, with details of more cyberbullying within EVE coming to light and several players being banned for defacing the EVE monument in Reykjavik.

In this anniversary retrospective, I summarise all the major EVE news from the year in one place and take a look at what the future may hold for the EVE universe.

YouTuber Inporylem is back with more closed beta goodness from Black Desert, the Korean action-sandbox (seems a fair term, right?) whose western arrival is still up in the air. Building on last week's video, City Life Part 1, today's videos show off the Naisu environment and continue the tour of city life within the game; both are embedded below. Contain your drool, folks!

          Hands-On with Snail

In a world split by a giant mountain range, two distinct cultures evolve: a Steampunk society that values technology and a tribal society that values sacred magic. Inevitably, they clash. It's an intriguing idea that serves as the foundation for what could be a very compelling PvP-oriented MMO.
