NeoCitiesThrottles FCC Down to 28.8Kbps in Opposition of Proposed Net Neutrality Rules

Posted: 09 May 2014 10:48 AM PDT

Slow DownNeoCities slows the FCC's Internet connection down to dial-up speeds

There's a lot of back and forth going on in regards to net neutrality and new rules proposed by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Tom Wheeler, who also happens to be a former lobbyist for cable and wireless companies. To show its opposition to the proposal, which is scheduled for a vote on May 15, 2014, web host NeoCities managed to throttle the FCC's connection to its website down to dial-up era speeds.

In a rather angrily written blog post, NeoCities creator Kyle Drake referred to Wheeler as the "bonehead responsible for this idiotic and insane proposal," and said "the FCC isn't doing their job of protecting American consumers." Rather than stop there, he neutered the FCC's connection and created "The Ferengi Plan," which for $1,000 per year he'll happily remove the 28.8kbps modem throttle.

"Since the FCC seems to have no problem with this idea, I've (through correspondence) gotten access to the FCC's internal IP block, and throttled all connections from the FCC to 28.8kbps modem speeds on the Neocities.org front site, and I'm not removing it until the FCC pays us for the bandwidth they've been wasting instead of doing their jobs protecting us from the 'keep America's internet slow and expensive forever' lobby," Drake wrote.

While this is likely to have limited effect, Drake went the extra mile by posting the throttling code they're using on GitHub. Game on, in other words.

"It's time for the web to organize and stand up against these thugs before they ruin everything that the web stands for," Drake said.

10 Awesome Websites to Share with Mom on Mother's Day

Posted: 09 May 2014 10:15 AM PDT

Mom SuperheroA variety of websites to put a smile on mom's face

Raising a geek has its challenges. Just ask your mother who could only shake her head when you straightened out your Slinky. She also had the patience to carefully and methodically peel the stickers off your Rubik's Cube to rearrange the color sequence after you messed it up and couldn't figure out how to solve the contraption. Your memory bank is probably filled with such shenanigans, along with loving gestures, like decorating a birthday cake to look like R2-D2 and finding Star Wars themed party favors to match.

It's easy to take these moments for granted when you're a kid, but now that you're all grown up, you can better appreciate all she's done. Mother's Day presents the perfect opportunity to flip the script and take care of her for once, instead of the other way around. Not everything has to be a grand gesture -- if you're looking for gift ideas, check out our Mother's Day Gadget Gift Guide from last year -- but something as simple as updating your mother's bookmarks with thoughtful links can get the message across. To help you do that, we searched high and low for websites your mother will appreciate and organized them in a gallery.

Electronic Arts is Giving Away Plants Vs. Zombies for PC and Mac for Limited Time

Posted: 09 May 2014 09:18 AM PDT

Plants Vs. ZombiesDon't let zombies ruin your backyard!

The Walking Dead has it all wrong -- zombies aren't just interested in human flesh, they also have an appetite for plants and sunflowers, and pretty much anything you put in their path. So we were taught when Electronics Arts published the highly addictive Plants Vs. Zombies game two years ago this month. If you happened to miss out on the fun, now's your chance to give it a go -- Plants Vs. Zombies is available for free on PC and Mac until May 28, 2014.

Electronic Arts is giving the PopCap Games title away via Origin. Why? We're not sure, but hey, we won't argue. It normally sells for $4.99, though these freebie promotions aren't exactly rare -- EA and PopCap Games have been known to give this game away for free before, particularly during Halloween.

For those of you new to Plants Vs. Zombie, it's a tower defense title comprised of 50 levels, over two dozen types of zombies, 49 flavors of plants, and five different game modes (Adventure, Mini Games, Puzzle, Survival, and Zen Garden).

Click away if you want to add this to your gaming greenhouse.

Netflix Begins Streaming in 4K Ultra HD, Rolls Out $1 Price Hike for New Subscribers

Posted: 09 May 2014 08:39 AM PDT

NetflixNetflix now charges new members $8.99 per month instead of $7.99

You snooze, you lose. Netflix last month said it was planning to raise the price of its subscription-based streaming service by up to $2 for new members, and sure enough, it made good on that promise today, though it settled on a $1 price increase instead of $2. A typical Netflix subscription now runs $8.99 per month, though if you're willing to limit yourself to standard definition (SD) content on one screen at a time, you can still subscribe at the old $7.99 per month rate.

"To continue adding more movies and TV shows, we are increasing the price of our $7.99 a month streaming plan by one dollar to $8.99 for new members. Current Netflix members get to keep their current price for two years, enjoying HD-quality movies and TV shows on any two screens at the same time," Netflix announced in a blog post.

The price hike comes just weeks after Netflix inked a multi-year agreement with Comcast for an undisclosed sum to ensure its content is delivered to subscribes at full speed. Netflix wasn't happy about it, but without the deal in place, Comcast subscribers who signed up for Netflix were complaining of poor quality video, long buffers, and dropped feeds.

Netflix also recently began streaming select content in 4K Ultra HD to compatible TVs (be wary when shopping a 4K television, as not all of them support Netflix in Ultra HD). Later this year, Netflix will add Breaking Bad to the list of programs available in 4K (reportedly in June).

Apple Reportedly Interested in Acquiring Beats Brand for $3.2 Billion

Posted: 09 May 2014 08:03 AM PDT

Beats iPhoneIf this goes through at $3.2 billion, it would be Apple's priciest acquisition ever

If the stars align just right, the next iPhone model may sport a Beats by Dr. Dre logo on the back. According to various reports, Apple is engaged in talks to acquire Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion, which would be the largest acquisition in Apple's nearly 40 year history. However, that's less than half of what Microsoft paid to acquire Nokia ($7.1 billion) and is well short of the $19 billion Facebook forked over for WhatsApp.

Multi-billion dollar buyouts are suddenly vogue it seems, and this would would give Apple a recognizable brand that also includes the new Beats Music streaming service, The New York Times reports. One of the unique selling points of Beats Music compared to other streaming music services is the inclusion of a $14.99/month family plan that covers up to 5 accounts across 10 devices.

No deal is yet in place, though it appears talks are in the advanced stages. Assuming the negotiations don't run into a brick wall, a sale could be announced as early as next week.

This would be an interesting move on Apple's part for a number a reasons, not the least of which is it represents a departure from Steve Jobs' preference to make smaller deals. As current chief Tim Cook pointed out in Apple's most recent earnings call, Apple's made 24 acquisitions in the last 18 months.

"We are expanding Apple's products and services into new categories, and we are not going to underinvest in this business," Cook said.

Apple can certainly afford to make an acquisition like this. The company is sitting on a mountain of cash piled $159 billion high, so plucking $3.2 billion would hardly register a blip. What's more interesting than the purchase price is exactly what Apple would do with the Beats brand and how it would affect the company's approach to streaming music.

Working As Intended: What Guild Wars 2 got wrong

GW2
Back in March, I spent an entire Working As Intended column discussing the game mechanics that Guild Wars 2 got right. But that's just one side of the story. In order to be completely fair to the game and to myself, I want to grump about the things it got wrong. Don't take this as utter condemnation for the MMO; we're most critical of the things we love precisely because we love and know them so well and want them to be so much more. And in spite of all the things I love about Guild Wars 2, it's far too often living in the shadow of its older sibling.

Massively's hands-on with EVE Valkyrie on the Oculus Rift DK2

At last year's EVE Fanfest, the press and attendees got a rare glimpse into something other than CCP's major IPs -- a virtual reality tech demo produced by a handful of developers during their down time. Originally codenamed EVR, this VR dogfighter on the original Oculus Rift development kit drew a surprising amount of attention and went on to win several awards at E3. It's now been a year since that project first sprouted legs, and last week at EVE Fanfest 2014 it sprouted wings as well.

Now named EVE Valkyrie, what started as a side-project has become one of CCP's key intellectual properties and the poster-child for virtual reality gaming. The game's success now ultimately relies on the adoption of VR tech and the appeal of its gameplay, both of which are still open questions at this point. I got some hands-on time with the latest build of Valkyrie during Fanfest to see how the game and the technology that powers it have come along in the past year, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Read on to find out how Valkyrie has changed in the past year and for a first look at the new Oculus Rift Development Kit 2.

      Vendetta station upgrades
Vendetta Online's latest newsletter has announced major graphical and engine changes, along with Oculus Rift HD support and a forthcoming Steam release.

Lead developer John Bergman explains that Guild Software is "working on a whole new client-server architecture to make it possible for us to generate massively dense sectors of unlimited scale." The new sectors will showcase various graphical upgrades including advanced lighting, shadow, volume effects, and more.

These and other upgrades are part of what Bergman is temporarily calling Vendetta 2.0, which "will represent the goals that I set out to build back when we started on this crazy space MMORPG development journey over sixteen years ago."

Vendetta is a subscription-based sandbox MMO that allows players on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Ouya, and Oculus Rift to play on the same server. It first launched in 2002.

The Daily Grind: Should MMOs require minimum guild sizes?

      Posted: 09 May 2014 06:00 AM PDT

      WoW bear banksitting
A listener recently wrote in to Massively's podcast to express his frustration with recruiting in MMOs since so many players avoid chat and guild advertisements. The community situation in many games can make it difficult for smaller guilds that refuse to spam to build up enough players to access basic guild functions, like guild banks. I myself have been testing out a game with player-run villages that requires guilds to have 25 active guild members settled there lest it lose its instanced town, which is a lot of people for a tiny, indie game, and a number that almost requires players to artificially inflate their rosters.

But the problem is that games impose arbitrary player minimums for guild charters and banks and ranks and so forth to begin with. For every Guild Wars 2 that lets you have a lonely solo guild if you want it, there's a World of Warcraft that requires you to summon 10 warm bodies first -- even if you then immediately boot the other nine, making the requirement a pointless and tedious exercise.

What do you think: Should MMOs require minimum guild sizes?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Think Tank: Non-combat roles in MMORPGs

        ArcheAge
Two recent topics have collided to create this week's Think Tank topic: Massively's Justin wrote about pacifist characters in MMOs, and Camelot Unchained reminded me that while there's no PvE, it'll be possible to play as a pure crafter to contribute to PvP. These shouldn't strike us as novel concepts. The genre has seen several MMOs (A Tale in the Desert, Glitch) that shed combat entirely, and many sandboxes (Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online, to name just a few), allowed players to roll pure crafters who raised neither blaster nor kryss to attack a foe. Yet many modern gamers still think of pacifist play as an anomaly, having been bred to believe combat is the end-all, be-all of an MMORPG experience.

I polled the Massively team members for their thoughts on pacifist play and non-combat roles in MMOs. Have or would they play such characters and games?

Bonus points for the Stormwind music floating behind the massive machine shop and for making the gearheads enter an in-game WoW arena to murder each other, which is totally how you get motorcycles designed and made.

I'm naked and alone again, but that's OK. After having to level up in other games a million times, deal with boring tutorials, repeatedly turn in quests that add no value to my play time, and then watch as my guild slowly bleeds members to the next MMO asking us to repeat the whole ordeal, "naked and alone" is actually nice. Well, maybe just the naked part.

And that, my friends, is the horror-survival/post-apocalypse genre. I love MMOs, but recent themeparks and building games have left me wanting something a bit more dangerous but still not a pointless murderfest. For the most part, these games are less about levels and quests and more about finding items to make sure you don't die. Hunger meters, diseases, and limited supplies in a world filled with enemies who loot you certainly feels like a good throwback to classic RPGs mixed with the multiplayer I've been craving since Asheron's Call first hooked me on MMORPGs.

But community-wise, these games have seemed more like lobby shooters than MMOs, which for a long time made me hesitate to try them. If you've been finding yourself in the same situation, hopefully my little plunge into this bloody genre will give you some ideas of what to expect.

                  EVE
Citing a "zero tolerance approach to dealing with harassment and victimization in the EVE Universe," CCP announced today that it has permanently banned the three vandals who defaced the new EVE monument in Reykjavik, Iceland. A fourth individual received a six-month ban.

                  "
The fact that the monument was vandalized is an insult to the entire community, not just to the individual who's name was directly targeted by the vandalism," the studio posted.

The ban includes not only CCP's games but attendance at Fanfest as well. CCP declined to release the in-game names of the individuals and said that any future development related to the incident will be kept confidential.

The Stomping Land's dinosaur survival MMO is coming to Steam this month

                  The Stomping Land
The Stomping Land, a survival MMO with a generous heaping of dinosaurs, is set to arrive on Steam Early Access on May 23rd for backers and May 30th for everyone else. The cost will be $24.99 for non-backers.

The MMO was successfully funded through Kickstarter last year and is being developed by Alex Fundora. The Stomping Land challenges players to survive as a human in harsh environments that include rather ravenous dinos. Hunger and thirst are issues that must be dealt with, and these are made all the more challenging by a lack of internal inventory (everything must be carried in hand or stored on the map). The game encourages players to form tribes for survival and allows them to capture, tame, and even ride dinosaurs.

The Early Access version will launch with one island, and you can check out the trailer for the release after the break.
