Rise and Shiny: Zombie Pandemic Posted: 08 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Horror, Screenshots, Video, Bugs, Game Mechanics, Previews, News Items, Free-to-Play, Browser, Hands-On, Casual, Post-Apocalyptic, Rise and Shiny, Livestream, Sandbox I really want to recommend Zombie Pandemic, a browser-based, post-apocalyptic "MMORPG" by Pixel Pandemic. I really do. The problem is that I can see you sitting down to play a cool-sounding game, recommended by me, only to leave it within an hour because its server issues literally make the game unplayable at times. It's such a shame because there are several great ideas going on in the game and several systems and mechanics that rely heavily on real timing and, you know, the server running smoothly. During my time with the game this week, I had the game reset a good portion of my progress, kill me with server burps, and block me from purchasing item shop goods. Yes, that's right... not only did the game prevent me from playing at times, but it also prevented me from giving it money. Still, I'm going to tell you why I liked the game and why you should still check it out. It's a great game for players who enjoy zombies, post-apocalyptic survival, board games, and relatively deep storylines. One Shots: The storm has passed Posted: 08 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Screenshots, EverQuest II, Culture, Warhammer Online, One Shots, RIFT, Final Fantasy XIV, Miscellaneous "Here is a picture from my days playing Warhammer Online," reader John submitted. "It will be missed." You know what, John? It really will be. Heaven knows it's been kicked around enough in the larger MMO community, but people doing that oh-so-conveniently forget the great times that were had. In a sea of fantasy games, it's still hard to find Witch Hunters battling mutated madmen or suicidal punk Dwarves getting swallowed by a giant squig. Except for here, of course. So take in that lightning and be kind to those who will go through the grieving process this month when WAR is shuttered. Do it for me, will ya? The Gipper. And as you're doing that, also check out our other player screenshots from this past week! The Daily Grind: If you were given $100 to spend on MMOs, what would you buy? Posted: 08 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Economy, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous Today a fun hypothetical: Let's say your awesome Aunt Irma visited you for your birthday and gave you $100 with a strict stipulation. She doesn't want to see you spend it on drugs or subscriptions to the New Yorker; instead she demands that you spend all $100 on MMOs that very day. What would you buy? Would you purchase a few MMOs that have been on your wish list? Would you splurge on an indulgent cash shop purchase? Would you add another character slot or pay for subscriptions for the next six months? Think carefully, as you have only $100. How would you spend it on MMOs? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Daily Grind: If you were given $100 to spend on MMOs, what would you buy? originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 08 Dec 2013 08:00:00 EST. The Tattered Notebook: EverQuest Next roundtable roundup, take two Posted: 07 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Polls, Video, Events (In-Game), Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Free-to-Play, Community Q&A, The Tattered Notebook, EverQuest Next, Sandbox, Player-Generated Content Back in September, The Tattered Notebook gathered together the first 10 roundtable questions that EverQuest Next and EQN Landmark devs posed to fans, with their accompanying community thoughts, developer opinions, and video clip answers. However, that was only the tip of the iceberg. The Round Table discussions were not just an introductory fad; they are a permanent part of the development process. As such, new polls are put up every week for fans to vote on and to post their own feedback and thoughts about on the forum. So now that a couple of months have passed, it's time to round up the next wave of questions in one central location, focusing this time on the six questions with dev responses. Maybe there is a query or two that you missed as the weeks rolled by, or maybe you just want to see what direction the community is leaning. Got some strong opinions about death penalties or fast travel in EverQuest Next? What about in-game holidays? This is definitely the time to share them! The Mog Log: There's nothing to say about Final Fantasy XI Posted: 07 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Game Mechanics, Opinion, Consoles, The Mog Log At a glance, Final Fantasy XI is doing all right for itself. It's been running for over a decade and has had to deal with only occasional server merges. It launched another new expansion this year. It certainly doesn't have the population that it used to have, but the people who are playing seem happy enough with the game, and that's what matters. And yet for all that I ostensibly write about both of Square-Enix's online games, these days it's pretty much all Final Fantasy XIV. Some readers have asked me why this is. Have I fallen out of love with Final Fantasy XI? Yes. And no. It's complicated. And I think discussing why I'm not writing more about XIV's more classic sibling also bears some discussion in the context of the game as a whole. So let's talk about why there's so little to say about Vana'diel these days, even while Vana'diel continues to be an active environment. Save Millennium City from Black Harlequin in Champions' Winter Event Posted: 07 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Super-hero, Events (In-Game), Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, News Items, PvE, Free-to-Play, Champions Online It's winter in Millennium City, which means that it's time for Champions Online's annual Winter Event. Black Harlequin is once again attempting to deliver thousands of deadly presents to city residents, and the dev team has bundled the March of the Mecha Soldiers mission into a custom alert that includes "new rewards for the defenders of Millennium City." Players will also run across randomly spawning Christmas presents like action figure parts and various Christmas items. Be wary, though, as some of the gifts may be traps set by Black Harlequin. The Stream Team: Slaying Vanguard's server beast (and dungeon mobs, too) Posted: 07 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Vanguard, Free-to-Play, Massively Meta, Livestream, Dungeons, The Stream Team Neither sleet nor snow nor server offline will keep Massively's MJ from Vanguard dungeons! OK, well the server being offline can, and actually did last week. But she won't give in that easily! She's back and ready to slay the mighty server beast that refused her her dungeon adventures. Now the question is, which one will she hit up today? That depends on who is brave enough to join the group! With over 70+ to choose from at her level, the possibilities feel endless. If some lower levels join the party, she'll head to one they can access. If not, perhaps the group will venture into Dreadfang Hovel, Lair of the Drake Riders, or Stonefist Scarp. Join us live at 1:00 p.m. to see where the crew ends up. Or better yet, log in and be a part of the crew!
