New Domain Suffixes Finally Rolling Out

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 05:06 PM PDT

ICANN LogoArabic, Russian, and Chinese suffixes introduced

ICANN—the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers—is finally starting to roll out some new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) after announcing their intentions a few years back. With only 22 gTLDs currently, the 1,400 new domain suffixes might finally spell the end of .com's dominance.

"Today, the first new generic Top-Level Domains from ICANN's New gTLD Program were delegated, or introduced into the Internet's Root Zone," Akram Atallah, ICANN's president of generic domains, said in a post on ICAAN's blog. "What does this mean? Well, it means a few things. From a big picture perspective, it signals the beginning of the largest-ever expansion of the Domain Name System (DNS)."

This ICANN marketing video explains the basics of domains.

The biggest impact that the new suffixes will have is the ability to use non-Latin strings—what ICANN calls: Internationalized Domain Names (IDN). Soon we'll be seeing Russian and Arabic domain suffixes right next to all of the English ones. The first new gTLDs include the Arabic word for web: شبكة, the Russian words for online and web site: онлайн and сайт, as well as the Chinese word for game: 游戏.

It'll be a while before any of the new gTLDs catch on, but we've still got the good ol' .com suffix to fall back on.

Build a PC: Recommended Builds (October 2013)

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 03:57 PM PDT

Baseline, performance, and ultra PC builds!

What time is it? It's time to build a PC with our Blueprints! This month, we've built three rigs at three approximate price points: Baseline, Performance, and Ultra. Budget gets you a capable but affordable rig, Baseline gets you a powerful that is suitable for gaming and content creation at 1080p, and Performance gets you even more.

These rigs are lab-tested and editor-approved. Feedback is, of course, welcome. Tell us what you think!

October 2013 Baseline Blueprint system

We're upgrading a few core items this month, but the total cost didn't rise that much, because prices have gone down elsewhere. The biggest change is the case, which used to be a Corsair Carbide 200R but is now the Fractal Design Define R4. Now that this sweet chassis costs just 80 bucks, it's hard to resist. It has two excellent low-noise 140mm fans hooked to a fan controller, pre-installed sound-absorbing panels, removable and even rotate-able drive  cages, and generally high build quality for the money. We also upgraded the power supply from a Corsair CX500M to a 650-watt Seasonic X-Series. The new PSU has premium build quality, near-silent operation, and four PCIe connectors instead of the Corsair's two. It ordinarily costs well over $100, so we couldn't pass it up at $70.

performance

October 2013 Performance Blueprint system

For the first time in many months, we're not changing any hardware at this tier. We considered AMD's new Radeon R9 290X video card, but at press time it was still about a week away from release, and we hadn't seen anything other than the reference design floating around. We'd like to see some vendor-customized cooling with enhanced thermal and acoustic performance before we can recommend one over the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 with its "ACX" cooler, which has roughly the same gaming performance and runs totally cool and quiet. We did see some price dips on the power supply, motherboard, CPU, and SSD, which offset the steadily rising cost of RAM. We selected a four-piece kit because Intel's X79 motherboard chipset works best in a "quad-channel" memory setup.

October 2013 Ultra Blueprint system

This month, we finally upgraded the Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard with the new-and-improved X79 Deluxe. The new board has a host of improvements, and fi rst up is that it has double the SATA 6Gb/s ports, at eight total. Second, it has improved Audio from Realtek by going from ALC898 to ALC1150, and Wi-Fi has also been boosted from 802.11n to 802.11ac. Possibly the most important reason, though, is that the Bluetooth was upgraded from 3.0 to 4.0 (that was a joke). Also, since this mobo only recognizes Intel's new Ivy Bridge-E CPUs out-of-the-box, we upgraded from Sandy Bridge-E to Ivy Bridge-E, as well.

We also upgraded the storage subsystem this month, so both our SSD and HDD got a refresh. First, we decided to give our Ultra build a terabyte drive. We know the Samsung 840 Evo is not as fast as the 840 Pro, but the Pro was not available in a 1TB size when we went to press. It also seemed time to upgrade our HDD from a 3TB Seagate Barracuda to a 4GB unit, now that 4TB drives are actually affordable.

Thousands of PC Gamers Downloaded a Fake Grand Theft Auto V Torrent Carrying Malware

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 11:43 AM PDT

Grand Theft Auto V TorrentThere are lessons to be learned here

As badly as we all want Rockstar Games to throw us PC gamers a bone and at least confirm that Grand Theft Auto V is being ported over to our platform of choice, there's just no substitute for patience. Unfortunately, impatience can lead to bad decisions, like trying to illegally download a version of a game that doesn't yet exist in hopes that it turns out to be real, only to find out you have a real mess on your hands.

Knowing that PC gamers are eagerly anticipating their turn to play GTA V with a keyboard and mouse, malware writers went and crafted a legitimate looking "leak" of the PC port and tossed the torrent online. According to WCCFTECH, which took a look at the torrent, the setup file is a realistic 18GB.

Of course, the file isn't legit, though if you tried installing it and held out hope it was real, you wouldn't find out that you'd been duped until you got to the registration window. It's at that point users are sent on a wild goose chase, with a .txt file indicating that a serial is available on a page where the user must complete a series of surveys.

Thousands have downloaded the infected torrent file, and maybe thousands more will continue to do so. Either way, GTA V doesn't yet exist for PC, legally or illegally.

Cooler Master Future Proofs All-in-One Liquid Cooling with Expandable Glacer 240L

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 09:55 AM PDT

Glacer 240LA self contained liquid cooler with modular properties

The market is flush with all-in-one cooling solutions, most of which look similar to each other, though they offer different levels of performance. Cooler Master's new Glacer 240L is yet another self contained liquid cooler for CPUs, but it's not just the performance potential that separates this model from the pack. Billed as being a "semi-DIY CPU liquid cooler," the Glacer 240L is both modular and expandable, allowing for upgrades down the line.

Each Glacer 240L is fully sealed, pressure tested, and ready to be used as an AIO solution out of the box. It's a higher end unit with a pump flow rate of 165 liters per hour, premium radiator with integrated reservoir and two fill-port locations (for vertical and horizontal orientations), and a pair of 120mm Blademaster fans. According to Cooler Master, the Glacer 240L doesn't require maintenance for three years.

Glacer 240L Block

Looking beyond its stock performance potential, the Glacer 240L allows for upgrades to the loop as desired. It features enthusiast grade 5/8-inch OD black PVC tubing secured by swivel fittings with an elegant clamping system for simple removal and reinstallation, Cooler Master says.

The Glacer 240L will be available later this month in the U.S. Pricing has not yet been announced.

CyberPowerPC Introduces Hadron Air Mini ITX Gaming PC Starting at $599

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 09:28 AM PDT

CyberPowerPC Hadron AirReclaim your living space

It seems every PC maker is suddenly on a quest to build smaller sized gaming rigs, presumably because they envision these boxes taking residence in your living room where they'll host Steam games on your big screen TV. One of the newer candidates is CyberPowerPC's Hadron Air, a mini iTX based gaming system that measures all of 6.6 inches (W) by 12 inches (H) by 12.1 inches (D).

To be clear, CyberPowerPC isn't marketing this as a Steam Machine, though there's nothing stopping you from fragging in your living room. Regardless of where you put it, you have two base systems to choose from in the lower end tier, both of which are fairly tame in configuration (more on that in a moment).

The first is the Hadron 100a ($599). It includes an EVGA Hadron Air case with 500W 80 Plus Gold Certified power supply, AMD A8-6400K processor (3.9GHz) with Radeon HD 8670D graphics, AMD A75 chipset motherboard, 4GB of DDR3-1600 RAM, 500GB hard drive (7200 RPM), 24X slot-loading DVD burner, and Windows 8.1 64-bit.

Prefer Intel? The Hardron 100i ($799) features the same case, optical drive and OS, but comes with an Intel Core i5 4440 processor (3.1GHz), Intel Z87 Express Chipset motherboard, Intel HD graphics, 8GB DDR3-1600 RAM, and 1TB hard drive (7200 RPM).

Both are respectable, though if you have additional funds to toss at either configuration, you can customize your build with faster processor options, SSDs, and even full size graphics cards like the Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX Titan. There are also higher end baseline systems to choose from, including the Hadron Air 200i (starting at $1,135) and 300i (starting at $1,589).

CyberPowerPC's Hadron Air gaming PCs are available now.

Toshiba Rolls Out Slim, Two Platter Hard Drive Series for Skinny Laptops

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 06:17 AM PDT

Toshiba two platter 7mm HDDToshiba's first two platter 7mm HDD

Laptops are getting thinner with each new generation, and if that trend is to continue, component manufacturers have to step to the plate with slimmer parts. Toshiba seems up to the challenge. The company just unveiled its first two platter 7mm HDD series for notebooks. Toshiba's new MQ02ABF line comes in 750GB and 1TB capacities, both with a 5400 RPM spindle speed in a 2.5-inch form factor.

"The MQ02ABF series fulfills our customers' desires for a high capacity 7mm form factor HDD required for today's thin and light laptops," said Don Jeanette (PDF), senior director of product marketing at Toshiba's Storage Products Business Unit. "We continue to focus on delivering a wide range of storage devices that enhance the computing experience, and we believe this newest addition to Toshiba's HDD product line will deliver the features our customers need."

These new drives measure 69.85mm (W) by 100mm (D) by 7mm (H) and weigh 99g. Other specs include a 12ms average seek time and SATA 3Gbps interface. The drives won't win any performance benchmarks, but they do offer lots of capacity in a thin profile. We expect to see these drives show up in lower cost laptops.

Path of Exile launchday roundup
With a pre-launch patch as big as yesterday's, you have to wonder what Path of Exile has in store for players after launch. And starting now, you can find out: Today the free-to-play action MMO breaks from the bonds of beta and bursts into land of launched titles. But if you think that launch for Path of Exile is just an exercise in switching labels, think again. Two new four-month challenge leagues will offer new and old players alike a fresh start alongside the launch; players can join the Domination league with the new shrine system or the hardcore league Nemesis, where death means converting to a standard character.

Whether you've been climbing those league ladders all the while or you're jumping in to experience the game for the first time, there's plenty of content to keep you occupied. If you need something to pass the time until you can log in this launch day or you want to get a leg up on the competition, check out this collection of updates, interviews, and hands-on experiences.

City of Steam powering down, switching to new name and ownership [Updated]

City of Steam is powering down Novemeber 22st
It's the end of the line for the free-to-play steampunk game City of Steam -- at least on R2Games servers. The publisher has announced that doors will be closing at 2:59 a.m. EDT on November 22nd. Even with what are probably the most impressive graphics in a browser-based game, CoS apparently couldn't keep enough players to remain viable. With the closure, the in-game currency Electrum can no longer be acquired, but all previously bought Electrum can be spent on store items throughout the month.

Does this mean that CoS is powering down for good? Not according to developer Mechanist Games, which has announced that it plans on releasing a new version of the game the same month:
Circumstances have contributed to a significant loss of players and we've decided to cease the current game operations for the Global English version and take City of Steam back. This is a decision we have taken months to reach, and are confident that it's best for the health of the players, the community and the game itself. City of Steam is not shutting it down. We at Mechanist Games will improve and self-publish the game, and endeavor to make it available to as many of the original fans as possible by cooperating with popular English language browser-gaming platforms (to be announced). City of Steam will be upgraded during the time it is offline to better suit the player demographics of the new browser-gaming platforms publishing the game; new content, new features, new systems, massive change to the economy and statistics, new equipment and cosmetics, new quests and an overhaul of most of the level art and main quests. Some features will be removed. There will also be a massive flying fortress for characters of any level to congregate in. Because of these numerous and sizeable changes, the game will be re-launched in November under the title City of Steam: Arkadia.

I'm a big fan of player housing. If you're not, well, you should be. OK, not really, but you may want to skip this here Leaderboard if you typically roll your eyes when the topic comes up. Assuming you do like player housing, there are plenty of flavors to choose from scattered across the MMOverse, and a couple more interesting implementations on the way.

For now, though, let's limit ourselves to housing in already-released games. Which system do you like the best? Vote after the cut!

The Daily Grind: Would you rather use mats to craft or make money?

The Daily Grind Would you rather use mats to craft or make money
With each new MMO that I dig into, there's always that looming question I must address from the start: Do I want to pursue crafting or just be a gatherer-supplier?

Crafting has a lot going for it: delayed gratification, potentially big rewards, self-reliance, and satisfaction for making your own gear. It's also not a terrific money-maker in most games in the beginning (in fact, it's often a money pit), it takes a long time to do, and sometimes it's just easier to farm or buy gear elsewhere.

I usually choose to gather and sell materials to make money, because then I can just buy what I want. Plus, I like being well-off in games -- you never know when you'll need a huge chunk of cash for that tempting purchase!

What about you? Would you rather use mats to craft or make money?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

It's been far too long -- going on 10 months now, in fact -- since we last had a reader request week here on Jukebox Heroes. My bad! I'll try to do these a little more often from now on. The idea here is to take all of your comments from previous columns, sift them for "oh man, why didn't you include [name of tune]? That's the best!" mentions, and compile a few of them to share with everyone. After all, I'm certainly not the beginning, middle, and end of taste in MMO music.

So here we go with several reader requests over the past year, covering a wide span of MMO scores. There's bound to be a few good listens in here, so give them all a try and let me know which of your favorite tracks we should cover in part 3!

More connected realms on the way for WoW
Blizzard has plans to connect more World of Warcraft realms, according to a post on the Battle.net forums. Five pairs of servers are due to be linked, though the company doesn't yet "have a specific date on which these connections will occur."

What's a realm connection? It's basically Blizzard-speak for cross-server tech wherein two or more standard realms have been permanently and seamlessly linked. "These linked realms will behave as if they were one cohesive realm, meaning you'll be able to join the same guilds, access a single auction house, run the same raids and dungeons, and join other adventurers to complete quests," the company explained previously.

What is the Battlezone? It's a persistent ground zone featuring Starfleet, Klingon, and Romulan combatants. Players must be level 50 to enter, and the area currently supports up to 20 players, each of whom can bring two bridge officers. The primary objective is to take and hold 18 out of 21 Voth-controlled points located in three different regions. And yes, there are plenty of rewards for doing so, including Dilithium and Dyson Sphere Marks. Read all about it at the official STO website.

The subject of all this adulation is Anvil Aerospace's F7C Hornet, a multipurpose craft that serves both military and civilian pilots in Star Citizen's galaxy.

Hyperspace Beacon: Four myths behind the SWTOR Galactic Starfighter NDA

Hyperspace Beacon Four myths behind the SWTOR Galactic Starfighter NDA
You want to know how to get viewers to your livestream and get yourself banned by BioWare all in one stroke? Film the beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic Galactic Starfighter! However, like the many who have leaked information about upcoming games, I have wondered why there is an NDA on these things in the first place. What is lost by companies allowing players to stream or talk about closed beta tests, and what is gained by company by keeping some things under wraps?

In the video games industry, like many industries on the cusp of technology and innovation, competition is high, as are the stakes. And developers like BioWare want to keep its latest creations like the next expansion for SWTOR under tight control to supposedly prevent the competition from stealing its secrets and creating a game just like it. I'm not so sure that makes a lot of sense. In fact, I've found that most of the reasons behind a beta NDA don't hold true when it comes to the next expansion for SWTOR. Here are the top four myths that I hear from those who support an NDA.

Flameseeker Chronicles How to get your Halloween on in Guild Wars 2
It's the most wonderful time of the year. Halloween has returned to Guild Wars 2, and ArenaNet has introduced a new member of Mad King Thorn's family to cause mayhem all around Tyria. While this year's Blood and Madness event isn't quite as involved as last year's Shadow of the Mad King, there's still lots to do and some new rewards to earn. It helps that the content will be hanging around GW2 until November 11th, giving us quite a bit of time to soak in the jack-o'-lantern-lit atmosphere and get sick on candy -- not that any of us would do that (much).

You've also got plenty of opportunity to finish up the storyline and the associated achievements, but it's probably more fun to get it done while it's fresh. With that in mind, I've written up a guide to help you chase off that whiny Thorn kid before the trick-or-treaters come knocking.

EverQuest Next Landmark's building projects will mostly take place in public although there might be a "black box" mode for private endeavors, SOE discussed in a new roundtable discussion.

The developers explained that this issue wasn't something that's ever come up in other games, since Landmark is so different. Thirty-seven percent of players polled said they would like to build their creations in public, which the team found encouraging.

There was concern about griefing, which the devs said shouldn't be an issue. When you stake a claim in the world, you're the only person who can build on it unless you give friends or the entire public permission to change that area.

The playerbase also expressed concern about how to keep their player studio projects a secret so that other players can't rip off their ideas. SOE will look into giving such players a way to develop in private, although Landmark will remain focused on public building. However, there will be no offline mode for building because SOE believes that it defeats the social aspect of the game.

Landmark's beta will begin this winter, with dates to be announced "in the next month or so," according to Dave Georgeson.

You can watch the full discussion after the break.

Path of Exile patches in guilds, classes, and balance changes before launch

Dancing a merry jig for patch day, tra-la-la.
It's not fair to call Path of Exile's pre-launch patch a kitchen sink patch; this is big enough to include the sink, dishwasher, fridge, and probably a good chunk of the dining room besides. It's a big patch. So before the game goes fully live tomorrow, you've got a little more time to play around with the enormous list of features, starting with the addition of an entire system for guilds that didn't exist before.

Yes, the patch includes a guild system. And that's not even the biggest part of the patch. It includes a new character class for players who have cleared the game on Normal difficulty, six new world areas, achievements, new skills, new items, and an assortment of balance tweaks and improvements. That's not even touching upon new challenge leagues and the like. The point is that even if you know the game inside and out, you might want to hop in and try out the huge array of new options available to you because... really. There's lots of stuff here.

Red 5 Studios' parent company lines up $24 million Firefall investment

Overall impact on your ability to shoot things is roughly nil.
Anyone who has played Firefall wouldn't associate it with more standard free-to-play Chinese MMOs, but the game is certainly generating a lot of financial interest in China. The9, the Chinese gaming company that owns developer Red 5 Studios, is lining up for the game to get a major investment from Oriental Pearl Culture Development Ltd., a major entertainment development organization. That investment shakes out to around $24 million and would make Oriental Pearl one of the largest minority shareholders in the company.

Overall, Firefall is apparently valued around $100 million based upon statements released by the companies. This latest investment is still in a non-binding stage and could be cancelled if Oriental Pearl changed its mind and decided against investing in the company. Preliminary reports suggest that the deal will go through, generating quite a windfall for the not yet technically launched game and demonstrating once again just how big the MMO scene is becoming worldwide.
