Embers of Caerus September update details explorable demo and team changes Posted: 23 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, MMO Industry, New Titles, Sandbox, Crowdfunding Forsaken Studios has released its September development update video this weekend for Embers of Caerus, and in it, we get details on a new community manager, some issues the team is having with funding, and the upcoming exploration demo that's in the works with a new engine. As technical director Dave Belcher explains in the video, the investment hurdle merely means that the team will need to step it up a bit to show off more of what the game is at this point, with the possibility of more crowd funding in the future. Belcher explains that the game will be moving from Havok's Vision engine to the Unity engine (temporarily) for new prototypes, which should help show potential investors (both large and small) what the game is all about. Check out the entire 18-minute video just after the jump for more on what the team has been up to in the last few busy months. EverQuest Next devs decide against class/race restrictions Posted: 23 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, Classes, Free-to-Play, Races, EverQuest Next Should EverQuest Next have class/race combo restrictions? This controversial question was at the forefront of the latest developer roundtable discussion following a player poll that showed 40% of fans were in favor of the game limiting combinations based on lore.Interestingly enough, the developers have decided against the plurality of the playerbase on this issue. The devs said that they never wanted to put players in the position where they'd make decisions they'd later regret. With over 40 classes, multi-classing, and all of the items in the world, the team felt that players would not be able to be informed enough to pick a race in the beginning if it would be restricted, class-wise, down the road. Another issue is if the team added new races and classes in the future, they'd be forced to arbitrarily restrict some people from playing them due to information the players didn't have up front. You can watch the full explanation from the team after the jump! Perfect World reassures players regarding the future of RaiderZ Posted: 23 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Interviews, MMO Industry, News Items, Free-to-Play There are certain things that trigger instinctive fears from MMO players. Things like having your game of choice shut down in its country of origin, which rarely bodes well for the future of the game as a whole. RaiderZ has shut down in both South Korea and Europe, but Perfect World Entertainment's senior product manager Mark Hill insists in a recent interview that this does not mean the title is in any risk of shutting down in North America.Hill states that the game is still developing a new expansion for release in the near future and that the development team is in close contact with the North American staff. He also points out that the game is not region-locked, allowing players to still register and play for the American version regardless of their countries of origin. While this doesn't mean the game is invincible in this market, it should help make current players a little more comfortable while playing. The Stream Team: Derailed by cheese edition, September 23 - 29, 2013 Posted: 23 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team It's not my fault! I seriously had plans -- big plans -- for this week's schedule. But then Mr. Lefebvre had to go and derail my entire thought process with his call to cheese. I am not kidding; I cannot think of hardly anything else now. Because cheese really is so wonderful! MMmm...Oh dang it! There my thoughts went again. Where was I? Oh, yah -- the schedule. Well, instead of trying to fight it, maybe I should just give in. Resistance is futile and all that, right? What harm could there possibly be in a little cheese anyways? Come to think of it, there's always a chance that some cheese will be involved in this weeks shows on Massively TV, which is all the more reason to tune into everything. And there's also a good chance that all the crazy Stream Team antics will successfully distract me from my distraction, so let's get to it! The Daily Grind: What little things does your favorite MMO do well? Posted: 23 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Final Fantasy XIV, Subscription I'm enjoying Final Fantasy XIV quite a bit, and it's not just because of the spiffy multiclassing system or Square's gorgeous fantasy trappings. It's also the little things like the fact that my avatar emotes while sitting down as well as the addictive fishing minigame with its nifty animations and niftier fishing log. And let's not forget the sleepy-time arrangement of the traditional Final Fantasy victory theme as my character curls up on his inn room bed after a hard day of adventuring. What about you Massively readers? Surely you have a few small-but-essential features that keep you coming back to your favorite MMO. What are they? MMO Week in Review: Blood for the blood god Posted: 22 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: MMO Industry, Warhammer Online, Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post. It's been a week of shutdown announcements in the MMO and pseduo-MMO community, but not all shutdowns are bad. EA-Mythic finally admitted the inevitable: that Warhammer Online, on life support for the last few years, will cease operation in December (Merry Christmas?), possibly paving the way for a new MMO set within the same IP. And Blizzard informed Diablo III's PC players that the RMT auction house will be axed next year, just in time for the expansion. Of course, that also means the death of the regular trading hall. You win some; you lose some. Read on for a look at the rest of this week's top MMO stories. EVE Evolved: Will Star Citizen or Elite harm EVE? Posted: 22 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Trailers, Video, EVE Online, Business Models, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Sandbox, Crowdfunding, Subscription, Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous Publishers haven't been willing to put a lot of money behind a sci-fi sandbox for some time, but upcoming games Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous seem set to revive the genre thanks to the power of crowdfunding. Star Citizen in particular has collected a world record $19.6 million in pledges so far from almost 258,000 individuals, eliminating the need for publishers and heavy investment entirely. Though both games are designed to be a primarily singleplayer or small-scale multiplayer adventures, their respective developers have already promised shared online universes and sandbox gameplay that could give EVE Online a run for its money. The past decade has shown EVE to be one of the most resilient MMOs on the planet. It's survived several major scandals, barely noticed the release of giant World of Warcraft, and has somehow maintained its subscription-based business model in a market rapidly being overtaken by free-to-play titles. Even at its lowest point, the game managed to survive the 2011 monoclegate scandal and the subsequent fallout that saw CCP Games lose 20% of its staff worldwide. EVE's subscriptions and concurrent user numbers have historically been unaffected by the release of new MMOs or sci-fi titles, so why should Star Citizen be any different? In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at how EVE Online has lived with very little direct competition until now and ask whether Star Citizen and Elite could be among the first games to directly draw players from EVE. Wings Over Atreia: Aion's anniversary marks four years Posted: 22 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, Events (In-Game), Opinion, Free-to-Play, Wings Over Atreia, Anniversaries Hmmm? What's that you say -- another year has passed? Well I'll be... you're right! If you are anything like me, a large chunk of Aion's fourth year crawled by at an agonizingly slow pace as you waited through all the newsbytes and teasing for the big 4.0 expansion and its new classes. Then, once Dark Betrayal finally arrived, the last quarter of the year just zipped by with hardly a notice. And quite frankly, it doesn't really feel as if four years have passed since Atreia first opened up and welcomed eager Daevas, but it really has. So happy fourth birthday, Aion!As is customary here at Massively, on this auspicious anniversary day I'm going to dedicate this Wings Over Atreia to a reflection on the past year, looking at what has changed since our last stroll down memory lane and what has stayed the same. And you are cordially invited to join me for plenty of reminiscing... and of course, CAKE! Rise and Shiny: Ensemble Online Posted: 22 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Video, Business Models, Game Mechanics, New Titles, PvP, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Browser, Casual, Rise and Shiny, Livestream, Sandbox, Player-Generated Content I always love it when a new indie MMO comes across my virtual desk. I never know what I'm going to get, even though I think I can tell a lot from its name or even the font that the name is written in. Ensemble Online is one of the newest ones, and I assumed it would be a sci-fi sandbox. In reality, it was indeed a sci-fi sandbox but mostly felt like a more cartoony, gentler Wurm Online.I was even able to sit down with the developers during my livestream of the game. Thanks to the fact that the team seems to be really up on social media and appears to pay attention to things like the press (unlike many indies), I learned a lot from that livestream. Be sure to watch it; it's embedded in the article. Ensemble Online holds a ton of potential. It's not there yet, but I'll tell you why I think it can stick around for a while.
