AMD Post $74 Million Second Quarter Loss, CEO Expects Return to Profitability in Q3

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 11:25 AM PDT

AMD ProcessorAMD's $1.16 billion quarterly revenue wasn't enough to turn a profit

It's a tough time to be a chip maker without a significant foothold in the mobile handheld market. Witness Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which recently announced $1.16 billion in revenue for the its second quarter of fiscal 2013, an operating loss of $29 million, and a net loss of $74 million, or $0.10 cents per share. Even though the numbers aren't where AMD would like them to be, the Sunnyvale chip designer is optimistic it will return to profitability next quarter.

"Our focus on restructuring and transforming AMD resulted in improved financial results," said Rory Read, AMD president and CEO. "Our performance in the second quarter was driven by opportunities in our new high-growth and traditional PC businesses. Looking ahead, we will continue to deliver a strong value proposition to our established customers and also reach new customers as we diversify our business. We expect significant revenue growth and a return to profitability in the third quarter."

AMD last quarter posted a $146 million loss, or $0.19 per share. That adds up to a $220 million loss so far this year as AMD struggles to evolve with a changing landscape, one in which tablets and smartphones are replacing traditional PCs for casual activities like Facebook and email.

It's not all about mobile, however. AMD scored some major wins by inking deals to power Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 consoles, both of which will feature semi-custom System-on-Chip (SoC) APUs. This in addition to already powering Nintendo's Wii U console. As pre-orders pile up, followed by the launch of the two new consoles, AMD could find itself in pretty good shape by the end of the year.

SanDisk Connect Storage Products Stream Data Wirelessly to Mobile and PC

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash DriveStream me up, Scotty!

If the Guinness brewmasters caught wind of SanDisk's new Connect line of wireless flash memory storage devices, including the SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive and SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive, they'd say, "Brilliant!" Since they're not here, we'll say it form them, because it's the first word that comes to mind when spying the next generation of portable storage.

These devices make it easier than ever to access and share data across multiple mobile devices. In addition, the SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive qualifies as the world's smallest wireless USB storage device to date, the company claims. Offered in capacities up to 32GB, the tiny drive supports simultaneous access to photos, movies, music, and documents from multiple devices around the house. It provides four hours of continuous streaming on a single charge.

SanDisk's second item is its Connect Wireless Media Drive. It offers up to eight continuous hours of streaming on a single charge, comes in capacities up to 64GB, and has an SDHC/SDXC memory card slot for even more storage.

"Today's consumers own an increasing number of mobile devices and accessing content across them can be a challenge," said Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product marketing, SanDisk. "With the new SanDisk Connect product line, we're raising the bar on what consumers can expect from personal storage. We combined the portability of small flash memory storage devices with the convenience of wireless streaming and sharing functionality."

SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive

All Connect line products are compatible with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Kindle Fire, and Android devices, as well as PC and Mac computers. The Connect Wireless Flash Drive runs $50 for 16GB and $60 for 32GB; the Connect Wireless Media Drive costs $80 for 32GB and $100 for 64GB. All are available to pre-order from Amazon and expected to ship in Q4.

Intel Issues Simple Fix for NUC Overheating

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:38 AM PDT

Gordon Mah Ung with NUCRevised design should stop the NUC from freezing up due to heat

Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC) is an intriguing device. The NUC is a mini PC built around an incredibly small 4-inch by 4-inch by 2-inch chassis that Intel would like to see become the standard for miniature systems that pack a punch. Though it's small, it offers residence to a 1.8GHz dual-core, Hyper-Threaded Core i3 processor, two SO-DIMM RAM slots, mSATA SSD slot, and a built-in Wi-Fi card. That's a lot to cram into such a tiny device, and as it turned out, first generation models had a problem with overheating.

We figured out that if you remove the built-in Wi-Fi card, which sits right on top of the mSATA SSD, the system would work just fine without freezing up or any other hiccups. We've also had success using SSDs with SandForce controllers, though it can be hit or miss.

Apparently Intel has devised a better solution. First spotted by FanlessTech, there's a Product Change Notification (PCN) for the NUC, #112432-00. The primary reason for the PCN is the addition of a 9.5mm thermal pad on the bottom cover of the NUC to improve the thermal design. From what we can tell, it's there to prevent the overheating that we and others experienced.

Whether or not it fully solves the problem, that's something we're anxious to find out.

Ubuntu Forum Hack Exposes Email and Password Data of 1.8 Million Users

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 08:19 AM PDT

Ubuntu Forums PenguinTime to change your password

If you're one of the approximately 1.8 million registered users at Canonical's UbuntuForums.org portal, then consider your login details compromised. You should have received an email from "The Canonical Sysadmins" this morning alerting you to the security breach that allowed a remote attacker to make off with your username, email address, and an encrypted copy of your password after breaking into the forum's database.

"If you have used this password and email address to authenticate at any other website, you are urged to reset the password on those accounts immediately as the attacker may be able to use the compromised personal information to access these other accounts. It is important to have a distinct password for different accounts," Canonical stated in the email.

At present, the UbuntuForums.org website is offline as Canonical investigates the security breach and works to restore things back to normal. According to Canonical, the stolen passwords were not stored in plain text, but as salted hashes. Ubuntu One, Launchpad, and other Ubuntu/Canonical services are not affected by the breach, the open-source company said.

Wargaming CEO: Current Xbox certification process "unacceptable" for free-to-play

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

World of Tanks
Wargaming.net is something of an expert when it comes to free-to-play game design. The studio's World of Tanks is one of the biggest F2P titles in the world, boasting over 60 million registered users and holding the world record for player concurrency. This population is likely to expand when World of Tanks launches on the Xbox 360 later this summer.

There's just one hitch: According to Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi, Microsoft's current certification process is not very friendly to free-to-play games. Here's Kislyi speaking with Polygon about the struggles the studio faced in bringing World of Tanks to Xbox Live:
One of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates.
Kislyi noted that Wargaming is trying to help Microsoft streamline the certification process, but that there is quite a bit of work on the tech and admin sides that needs to be done. As for whether any of this will result in meaningful changes for developers looking to launch on Microsoft's current or future console, Kislyi noted, "We will see."

This isn't the first time Kislyi has talked about frustrations with Microsoft. A few weeks ago, he expressed his unhappiness with the fact that World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition players will need an Xbox Live Gold account to get online with the game.

The Nexus Telegraph: WildStar's dirty little secret races

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:30 AM PDT

And since we are dead, we can take off our heads to recite Shakespearian quotations!
I'm of two minds about the last two races in WildStar. And I'll be honest, the first mind is kind of bored because those of us with sharp eyes had already figured most of this out.

Most of us might not have been sure of the names, to be fair. But the core concepts are fairly close to what most of us expected, with both races playing against type -- cute and fuzzy for the Dominion, creepy and leering for the Exiles. I even speculated that the last race of the Exiles would be a race that focused upon getting dirty work done when it needed to be done, and sure enough, what did we get?

That being said, both of these races are pulled off with a style and panache that I should have expected but didn't. So even if I could have guessed that these were the practical upshots of the race grid, I hadn't counted on them being this nifty.

Greed Monger video demonstrates house building
In a game focused on building things, you'd expect housing to involve a bit more than just dropping a generic prefab on a plot of land. If you envision the builder carefully piecing elements together to create a unique dwelling instead, you've hit Greed Monger's take on housing on the head. A new video highlighting the house building tool of the crafting-centric game follows the construction of a large building piece by piece and gives an example of the possibilities.

You can see the process in action in the video after the cut. And if that still isn't enough, Greed Monger also announced that the tool would be available for folks to try out sometime in the coming days.

I didn't want to turn the stove on last night and chance my place spontaneously combusting from the extra heat, so I went outside and fried up an omelet on the sidewalk. Heck, even if you don't like either Kiel or Gnashblade, you probably still like playing games. On the other hand, if you hate games and just like to vote, you're in deep trouble because the Lion's Arch political process is all about games, which sounds like a great way to let off steam when you feel like literally pummeling the supporters of the candidate you hate. Maybe Tyrians are on to something.

The Daily Grind - Have you ever played an MMO for its crafting?
Last week's ArcheAge Japanese open beta commercials gave me a chuckle, both because of the music and because they focused so heavily on the game's crafting elements. As I was watching them, I imagined most western MMO players rolling their eyes and wondering where all the combat footage went, not to mention the screaming rock guitars and the scantily clad avatars.

But enough of my stereotyping, this is The Daily Grind!

And The Daily Grind needs to feature a conversation starter, so here you go. Have you ever played an MMO specifically for its crafting? If so, which one?

Crap, that's not it either. OK, it's the Chua and the Mordesh. All jokes aside, the game's techno-gremlins and mystic-zombies are both pretty badass and will certainly make your choice between Alliance and Horde that much harder. Er, I mean Exiles and Dominion. EVE Evolved: Is DUST 514 a pay-to-win game?

            Game title image
I've been following DUST 514's development with a cautious optimism for the past few years and have been trying to convince my console gamer friends to give it a try since it launched back in May. Last week I finally sat down to play the game myself and was thoroughly disappointed with both its 2005-era graphics and fundamentally broken gameplay. DUST 514 will likely stay in development for the forseeable future and may end up becoming a polished and integral part of the EVE Online universe, but right now it's a buggy and mediocre FPS that has very little impact on New Eden.

DUST 514 launched to mixed impressions from the gaming media, catching a lot of flack from reviewers for its microtransactions options. Some have argued that selling skill point boosters and destructible Aurum tanks and equipment directly for cash makes it a pay-to-win game, while others maintain that it doesn't give you an advantage that free players can't buy for ISK. The definition of pay-to-win isn't always clear, and the console FPS audience may not be as tolerant of microtransactions PC users have long since accepted.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at the arguments for and against it being a pay-to-win game and ask what went wrong with the game's launch.

              Warcraft Movie
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures created something of a stir at this year's San Diego Comic Con by reportedly debuting a teaser trailer for the long-anticipated World of Warcraft movie. The trailer featured a human warrior and an angry orc and apparently was set in Hellfire Peninsula, also known as "that horrible place I dragged my Mage through levels 60-63."

Actual filming begins in 2014, with director Duncan Jones referring to the teaser as more of a "mood piece." The film, titled simply Warcraft, will feature a mix of live-action and computer-generated effects.

And no, the trailer doesn't seem to be available anywhere online. This Mountain Dew commercial is probably close enough, though.
