SWTOR, Diablo III, Raph Koster, and more honored in GDC Online awards

Wednesday night saw the Game Developers Choice Online awards being handed out to MMO, social, mobile, and free-to-play games. Star Wars: The Old Republic came away with the awards for best online game design, best online visual arts, best online technology, and best new online game. Riot Games won for best live game, the audience award, and best community relations for League of Legends.

Raph Koster was officially recognized with an online game legend award, and World of Warcraft received a hall of fame award. Blizzard also scored with Diablo III, receiving an award for having the best audio for an online game. The award for best social network game went to Draw Something, and thatgamecompany won an online innovation award for Journey.

Massively sent two plucky game journalists -- Beau Hindman and Karen Bryan -- to Austin, Texas, for this year's GDC Online, where they'll be reporting back on MMO trends, community theory, old favorites, and new classics. Stay tuned for even more highlights from the show!

    Ask Massively: Forums, edit buttons, and staff change-ups

    Last week, we announced that we are closing down Massively's forums. What forums, you ask? Yeah, unfortunately, that was exactly the point. The forums were always a bit too adjacent to the site, and in the wake of the success of our newfangled comment system, we'd prefer to focus on publishing articles and engaging readers right here in the comments on the site, rather than on a neglected off-site portal. I'm genuinely sorry, but I hope the few remaining, stalwart forumgoers will migrate over and help make our comments an even more interesting place to be. In return, we'll try to crack down harder on the comment trolls who are hell-bent on killing the buzz. Believe me, they annoy us as much as they annoy you, especially when we're babysitting them on a Friday night.

    But this is Ask Massively, the meta column where you ask us weird questions and we give you weird answers. So what else did you wonder about this week?

      GDC Online 2012 - CCP on keeping players cheaply
      Sandboxes get a lot of flak in today's themepark-dominated MMO industry. That said, sandbox developers who do it right will be laughing all the way to bank, according to CCP senior designer Matthew Woodward.

      Woodward recently gave a talk at GDC Online titled The Other White Meat: Design Architecture for Sandbox Games. The presentation focused on the three pillars used by the firm to power its long-running EVE Online MMORPG. Woodward stressed social aspects, goals and goal-driven players, and most importantly, emergent gameplay.

      "The big win is that emergence is cheap. A lot of emergent gameplay discussion is about the One Big Moment. In EVE, the big heist that happened six years ago, in Ultima Online, the assassination of Lord British," Woodward explained. "If you do this well, people will play your game forever. People will pay for it forever."

      GDC Online 2012 - Age of Wushu gets a new trailer
      Age of Wushu's sporting a new trailer at this week's GDC Online convention, and the clip features nearly three minutes' worth of wall-scaling, roof-running, kung-fu-fighting fun. If you can take your eyes off the aerial hijinks for a moment or two, you'll also get a glimpse of AoW's gorgeous environments, which run the gamut from snowy mountainscapes to sunlit gorges and idyllic ancient Chinese villages.

      Age of Wushu is a free-to-play sandbox title currently scheduled for a North American release in May of 2013. See the trailer in its entirety after the cut.

      PlanetSide 2 Command Center brings a beta update and spotlight on Heavy Assaulters

      Planetside 2 Command Center brings a beta update and spotlight on Heavy Assaulters
      Creative Director Matthew Higby and Senior Art Director Tramell Isaac are back with the sixth episode of PlanetSide 2 Command Center, everyone's favorite show about the adventures of a wacky MMO. On tap for this episode is an update on the beta, the reveal of Esamir, a video featuring the Heavy Assault class, some fan movies, an interview with a concept artist, news about SOE Live, and... fan spam.

      Higby says that the team just did a full wipe in the beta due to the sheer amount of changes and improvements that SOE made. He also said that the population cap has been increased for this next step.

      Isaac invites SOE Live attendees to participate in the $10,000 PlanetSide 2 tournament. While online registrations for it are closed, players can sign up in person at the event.

      Allods Online overhauls female model and animations

      Female Xadaganians in Allods Online are in for a treat come patch 3.05. The devs recognized that the characters didn't look up to snuff compared to the other races and genders and thus have devoted some time to giving them (yes) a makeover.

      Are we in an '80s romcom montage or what?

      The makeover for the women includes a more detailed character model, improved animations, an additional face, and more hairstyles. The team is also tweaking hair models so that locks of hair will now be seen falling from inside of whatever helm that character is wearing.

      To promote the Xadaganian makeover, gPotato released a video diary starring actress Nataliya Zemtsova. Zemtsova was used for the motion capture and voiceovers of the new models and is apparently amazed that you can assign a character a name. Check it out after the jump!

      Making old games into MMOs is a tricky business. It may sound good on paper, but execution is another matter.

      In an ideal world, I'd love to see Sundog: Frozen Legacy repurposed as an MMO. For one thing, it was the first computer game I ever played. For another, it had a nifty Firefly feel to it a couple of decades prior to Firefly. Finally, there simply aren't many hard sci-fi MMOs out there that blend space combat with trading and planetary action. What about you, morning crew? What old game would you play as an MMO?

        Final Fantasy XIV shows off A Realm Reborn on the PlayStation 3

        Yeah, some of the impact is lost in header-image-sized shots.
        When Final Fantasy XIV first launched, it was with the promise of a PlayStation 3 version in the near future. That was before the game underwent numerous staff changes, and after two years, it may have seemed to fans as if the game would never come to consoles. But the PlayStation 3 version is a reality, and the team at Square-Enix has released new screenshots of the game's UI and in-game graphics on the console version to prove it.

        The overall look is a bit cleaner than the PC version of the UI that players have seen previously, although the graphics are a bit softer around the edges. But it's still recognizably the same game. This batch also includes some concept art for new role-focused chocobo barding, something that's sure to excite fans of the yellow birds. Take a look at the gallery for all of the screenshots and concept art.

          League of Legends tournament cheaters fined $30,000

          With $2,000,000 US in prize money up for grabs in the League of Legends World Championship tournament, last week's accusations of cheating by several teams threw the e-sports scene into chaos. Several teams were accused of looking across the room at the enemy team's minimap, which was on display for audience members. Riot Games initially announced that nobody had looked at the minimap, but as viewers at home dug through the recorded streams, the evidence of cheating mounted.

          This week Riot carried out a full review of each match that was called into question, investigating both the incidents of players peeking at the opposing team's map and the impact on the match. One team was cleared of all misconduct, three were issued warnings for unsportsmanlike conduct, and Korean team Azubu Frost was fined 20% of its winnings. The $30,000 fine will be donated to Riot Games' charity programme in Korea.

            This week at GDC Online, Gamigo showed off the progress in not one but two of its upcoming titles. Otherland, based on the novels by Tad Williams, has begun to pick up pace lately, with a series of closed beta events in Europe. Meanwhile, Grimlands has also made quite a bit of progress and is working out the finer details as it nears release.

              Out, out, brief CMA! MJ's but a viewer puppet, a poor player that struts and frets her hour upon the stage and then is heard no more... at least until next time!

              To soon, too soon the show is over! But what a run it has been; our stage production of The Secret World has been a success. Between wandering the streets of New York, checking out the story of the Illuminati, and diving into everything from dungeons to investigating puzzles, this Choose My Adventure has been a fun experience. I stretched myself, doing things I wouldn't normally do. And that's all from your direction, so I thank you. But the curtain hasn't fallen yet; the final act has yet to play out; your final instructions have yet to be carried out. How did the battle fare in El Dorado? Stay in your seats for this grande finale.

                Free for All: Ryzom - when a server merge feels right

                I wonder what you readers thought when you read about Ryzom's latest issues. If you've been playing for a long time, you'll feel a sense of deja vu as yet another server merge or account tweak is being forced on the playerbase. If you're not familiar with the game (why haven't you tried it yet?), then it's likely the recent announcement of server merges and character wipes was a sure sign of failure. Ah, failure: the go-to word for those who don't want to investigate the normal goings-on in the MMO world.

                MMOs, especially indies, can leap from owner to owner and server to server quite easily. It's not unusual to say the least. Ryzom has been through more of these changes than I care to recall, but the core game and long list of veteran characters have remained -- that is, until the developer announced that, along with the merge, characters would be wiped. Players flipped out. The forums were filled with intense conversations, and even non-players were astonished.

                Consider the Darkfall announcement by contrast. Some Darkfall players are apparently looking forward to the character wipe. But Ryzom is not a FFA PvP title. Roleplayers are very happy in Ryzom; I am one of them. Luckily the developers tweaked the decision, and now I have been playing on my old character, back in the world of Atys.

                Was the decision a good one? I think so.

                  Lineage II launches a teaser site for Glory Days

                  She's honestly pretty tired of watching adventurers explode in golden light.  It's gotten boring.
                  Another update for Lineage II is approaching, and this one promises to be full of glory. Days of it, even. But if you weren't sure about what the Glory Days update will offer for players, you can now stop at a handy teaser site that contains all of the upcoming features and expansions to Lineage II's existing gameplay. And there's a lot in there.

                  High-level players can venture to the Isle of Souls for solo or small-party play, take on Pagan's Temple for solo or group play, make a small team to infiltrate Nornil's Cave, or take part in the daily instanced raid of Nornil's Garden. Meanwhile, all players can enjoy the revised Mentoring and Reputation system, while players with a Subclass can enjoy special dual-class abilities as well as a free subclass level reset. And there's a whole revamped system of Clan Wars coming, complete with contestable halls. Really, if you're an avid Lineage II player, you might want to just look at the site.

                  Looking at the wildlife of WildStar's Galeras region

                  It sounds like the finest party I can imagine getting paid to go to.
                  If the pirates, bandits, ancient machines, and military forces in WildStar weren't bad enough, players are going to be contending with a lot of the native wildlife. Last week's WildStar Wednesday focused on the top-level overview of the Galeras region, but this week is focused on the local flora and fauna, which are just as dangerous as the invading armies with gunships. More so, in some ways, as a stemdragon doesn't care why you're on its land, just that you are.

                  Stemdragons have been seen by fans before, having starred as the antagonist in the game's first trailer. Buzzbings and Scrabs are new, however -- the former is an insect the size of a small car that traps its enemies with honey, the latter is a cross between a beetle and a crab with thick armor and a propensity for burrowing.                   You might know every last detail about Tyria and the Asura, but at GDC this week, ArenaNet's Technical Director Cameron Dunn gave a sneak peek behind the curtain and showed how the nuts and bolts of Guild Wars 2 are constructed to bring the best gameplay and performance to players on launch day and beyond.

                    Check out 25 minutes of Marvels Heroes in action
                    It's been a great day for preview videos and tours, and we've got another fascinating one for you if you have 25 minutes to spare. Gamespot posted a playthrough video of Marvel Heroes, complete with developer commentary, and it's a doozy.

                    The video portion follows Deadpool through an instance called The Raft -- a giant ocean prison tower. While the combat isn't too sophisticated, it's cool to see scripted events and impressive entrances made by enemies. Later on, the devs show off a public zone where Iron Man blasts through hordes of enemies while encountering Daredevil, Storm, Wolverine, the Thing, the Hulk, and the Scarlet Witch.

                    If you're looking for a superhero-slant on Diablo-style gameplay, then give this video a watch and see if it might be right for you.

                    EVE Online video and dev blog detail improvements coming with Retribution
                    In a new video released today by CCP, we're treated to a guided tour of the teams responsible for EVE Online's winter expansion: Retribution. CCP Ripley, the senior producer for release development, introduces us to each team responsible for the upcoming features, including improved visuals, five new ships, UI tweaks, and of course, the new bounty hunter system.

                    In addition, CCP has released a new dev blog by CCP karkur from Team Pony Express detailing a few of the upcoming user experience improvements coming with Retribution. One of these is a clearer indicator of who's dealing the most damage to your ship. CCP karkur points out that this is still in very early development, so things may change slightly between now and launch on December 4th.

                    PlanetSide 2 is a game that's all about huge maps and war on an epic scale. The MMOFPS title's continents are massive -- dozens of times larger than the average first-person-shooter map and packed with structures to dominate, vehicles to crash, and enemy players to kill. For the last few weeks, players have been content to murder one another in the various environments of Indar, the only continent available when the beta went live, but everything changed over the weekend.

                    Now, there's a new kid in town: a vast, frozen wasteland that brings new challenges and new stories to the game in a way that Indar perhaps never could. It's called Esamir, and I gave my life (several times) to control and defend it.

                      Guild Wars 2: Now with two-factor authentication

                      Security has kind of been a hot topic in Guild Wars 2. ArenaNet announced a couple weeks ago that they were working on bringing two-factor authentication into play, and that joyous day has arrived! A new post on the official forums introduces players to mobile two-factor security.

                      ArenaNet is using Google's authenticator, which is available on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, and players will use this authenticator to verify devices rather than the previous email authentication system. The team is advising people that this is currently a beta feature, and already has two changes planned for the near future. Soon, unlinking the mobile authentication system will require additional codes, and users will have an option to remember current networks rather than having to authenticate every login.

                      There are two thoughts that most people have when coming across Age of Wushu. The first is, boy that looks pretty. The second is, but is it just another forgettable Asian grindfest with a glossy coat of paint?

                      Snail Games Associate Producer Colin Miller agrees with the first but not the second. At GDC Online, Miller sat down with us to pitch why Age of Wushu deserves your full, undivided attention -- and eventual patronage.

                      Age of Wushu is a martial arts sandbox MMO that takes place in gorgeous ancient China. If you've ever seen a period piece from that country, you already know how graceful these stylized fights can be; now you'll see them in an online game. Developed in China, Age of Wushu is ready to stun Western audiences with the help of Snail Games and its crack dev team.

                        Chris Roberts returns with PC-exclusive Star Citizen
                        It's a good day to be a hardcore gamer, folks, particularly if you grew up playing Wing Commander, Freelancer, or any number of similar PC-exclusive space sims. Genre heavyweight Chris Roberts has finally unveiled his new project, and it looks to be a sprawling open-world title called Star Citizen.

                        Roberts has released an 11-minute video detailing various aspects of the ambitious game (it's been in development for a year now), which include a co-op fighter pilot campaign and a huge Freelancer-style cosmos that allows players to pursue their own goals. Wanna be a pirate? Go ahead. A trader? Sure thing.

                        Oh, you want absurdly immersive details like full working cockpits, flightsuit wrinkles, and physics-based spaceflight too? You got 'em. "I'm building the game, and a universe, that I would like to play, so it's for gamers like myself," Roberts explains. "I wouldn't say that I'm a social, casual gamer who plays Farmville. I like sophisticated experiences."

                        Roberts goes on to explain why he's chosen the route of PC-exclusive in an era when consoles and mobile platforms are all the rage, and he also touches on the subject of crowd-funding. His goal is a relatively modest $2 million, and he's aiming to achieve it directly on the game's own website rather than via a third-party intermediary like Kickstarter. He's also got quite a bit of in-engine footage to show already, and you can see it in the clip after the cut.

                        Is Star Citizen an MMO, though? That's hard to say at this juncture. We know it's massive in scale, and we know it's multiplayer, but thus far we don't know much about the server setup or how many concurrent users are in the cards.

                          RIFT dimensions video asks 'what will you create'
                          We don't know about you, but the folks here at Massively are downright salivating over the upcoming flexible housing system in RIFT: Storm Legion known as dimensions. With little over a month to go before the expansion, Trion Worlds is highlighting its answer to player housing with a visually stunning video.

                          In the video, houses are made and destroyed in a matter of seconds, showing how many options are available to creative players who piece together elements to make something greater. In addition to houses, the video shows a longboat and tree fort being built, all with dynamic lighting and complete customization.

                          Death need not be the end of hope.
                          By now every City of Heroes fan has no doubt seen NCsoft's backhanded dismissal of the entire Save CoH movement. If by some coincidence you hadn't seen it, congratulations! Welcome to Wednesday; here's your bad news. NCsoft has heard us and responded with, "Aw, shucks, we really tried," which is the equivalent of a five-year-old child claiming that he did try to clean his room after three minutes of picking up toys and putting them back down in roughly the same spot.

                          If I sound bitter, it's because I am. But what does this mean for City of Heroes? Is all hope truly lost? Have we lost the fight to save our city? Is there no chance for a reprieve or some shining light in the late night?

                          Well... not much. But this is not actually the change that it's being framed as. This is what we went in knowing, and while it changes the game being played, it doesn't change many of the hard facts. I said in my first column that we were fighting a battle with a slim hope, and the fact that it's now pretty much no hope doesn't change much, nor does it mean we should stop fighting.

                            MechWarrior Online open beta starts October 16th
                            Thanking fans who have helped test MechWarrior Online, president of Piranha Games Russ Bullock stated that the high-quality feedback during its closed beta run has helped bring the game to the point that beta can be opened up to all fans. Commencing October 16th, the open beta period will put all interested players in the pilot seat of giant war machines and pit them against each other in PvP battles.

                            The Founder's program will officially end on October 14th, two days prior to the start of the open beta. Details about the Founder's packages can be found on the official site.

                              GDC Online 2012: SWTOR's Damion Schubert dissects story as a mechanic

                              Damion Schubert remains a well-respected member of the online development community. He can tell tales of his time working on Meridian 59 and Shadowbane. His latest project allowed him to build many of the integral systems of Star Wars: The Old Republic, arguably his most successful work to date. He also writes regularly for Game Developer Magazine and speaks at GDC Online and many other game development conferences nearly every year. When it comes to developers who have shaped mulitiplayer online games, Schubert is one of the originals.

                              At the Game Developers Conference in Austin, Texas, this week, Schubert spent an hour explaining the thought process and development woes of taking an element like BioWare storytelling and making it work in a massively multiplayer setting. This being the first GDC Online since the launch of SWTOR, Schubert spoke frankly and openly about many of the struggles his team had to overcome to make the gaming systems work. Some of the ideas worked out well; others, not so well.

                              As an avid player of SWTOR, I saw new light. As I listened to Schubert speak, I began to understand why many players are frustrated with elements of the existing game. I also began to understand that if some of the systems and thought processes has been changed early on, players might have received the game better. That said, I also believe that Schubert's team prevented a lot of issues that could have popped up had certain elements been implemented in the way they were originally conceived.

                                Ninja gear premiers in North American Aion
                                Shaking up the usual order of things, NCsoft is actually premiering new Aion armor and weapon skins in North America before anywhere else in the world, including Korea. The studio just revealed the Shadow Wraith sets coming next week.

                                Daevas who love the ninja movement in-game may also love the new ninja-themed armor sets, gis, and weapons. Without any stats of their own, these items can be skinned onto existing armor in game for a completely new look. These skins will available in the BlackCloud Marketplace starting October 17th.

                                  I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting a big kick out of the little ad banner videos that RIFT is using to promote the Storm Legion expansion. The sight of a mini Scott and Russ flipping signs with promises to generic forum posts is a neat little marketing ploy. Even though I never click ad banners, and even though I'm getting the expansion, I still clicked on them just to see the video and the gameplay. It's like RIFT's version of Dumbledore smiling back through the Daily Prophet.

                                  There's a lot I'm looking forward to in Storm Legion, but at the same time, I'm apprehensive about the changes that tend to come with the launch of any expansion. The world of Telara is changing, and Crucia is only part of that. In this week's Enter at Your Own Rift we'll look at some of the changes that MMO expansions normally bring and see how they might affect RIFT.

                                    Neverwinter beta keys available in Halloween writing contest
                                    Scary stories are all the rage this time of the year, and Perfect World Entertainment is tapping into the Halloween spirit with an adventure writing contest for Neverwinter fans. Dubbed the Spooky Adventure Contest, interested dungeon masters have until October 22nd to create an entire Dungeons & Dragons tabletop adventure based on a terrifying tale set in or around the city of Neverwinter. Successful entries will also include encounters and detailed map descriptions.

                                    After the contest closes, the three top adventures will receive Neverwinter beta keys and some game swag. All three winners get an official Neverwinter dice bag while the first place winner will also receive an official dragon beanie cap. Full rules and conditions can be found on the official site.

                                    When Chris Roberts left the games industry a decade ago, the type of space games he was famous for making -- Wing Commander, StarLancer -- largely went with him. It's just not the sort of game we see from anyone but small, independent developers these days, and those developers often don't have the resources to create something that is wow-worthy from a technical standpoint. Now Roberts is back and he's bringing with him a game which, if it fulfills its potential, should more than make up for his decade-long absence.

                                    After a tease last month that Roberts would be coming back with a space game of some sort, his new project was revealed today. Star Citizen, despite its uninspiring name, appears to be the game fans many of us have always dreamed of. Though it may lack the license of Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, or any other popular franchise, it's difficult not to look at Star Citizen and become overwhelmed with excitement.

                                    ifficulty spikes get a bad rap. You'll be playing a game, enjoying yourself, totally immersed in the match or the quest or the role-play or whatever, when suddenly the fun comes to a brake-pad-burning halt. When that happens, who's to blame? Aside from your wife/husband/mother/boss butting in and insisting you eat dinner/go to bed/show up at work once in a while, it's likely a difficulty spike. You're all familiar with these -- the sudden time limits, treacherous platform configurations and over-powered bosses who come out of nowhere. At first they seem like momentary setbacks, but after five, eight or a hundred attempts at beating them, you realize that your game just might be over. Yup, difficulty spikes, otherwise known as "game-ruining pains in the ass." I've been putting up with them all my gaming life but recently I was thinking; they can't be all bad. Can they?

                                    Difficulty spikes are generally about as welcome as finding half a roach in your Boca burger, but I think they deserve some consideration. For one thing, their history dates back to game development's earliest days. It's important to remember that before games went mainstream, they were made by and for a specific kind of tech enthusiast with the patience and tenacity to spend long hours beating his or her head against a pixilated brick wall. Back then, there was a certain satisfaction associated with overcoming a challenge most gamers couldn't and a certain stature allotted to those who managed it. No one whined about how hard games were, and game designers never troubled themselves with things like (snort) "accessibility." We all agreed that the game designer's job was to create mechanics so obscure, so insidiously cruel that only the most persistent gamers could ever overcome them.

                                    or the sake of brevity, let's get the obvious things out of the way. Far Cry 3, this fall's latest installment in the open-world FPS franchise, is everything fans of the series hope and expect. The landscape is massive, gorgeous, an absolutely screaming to be explored. From seaside villages and lush jungles to wrecked ships and mountain-top plantations, Ubisoft has created a playground filled with more than enough interesting nooks to peruse. Whether on foot, behind the wheel of a jeep, or soaring under the wings of a hang glider, traversal through the environment is an absolute treat littered with constant surprises. Hunting, crafting, and ample side quests help break up the main goal of guiding Jason Brody, an American tourist caught in the midst of a vacation from hell, on his quest to find find his kidnapped friends.
