From R.O.B. to Rhythm Heaven: The Legacy of Nintendo's Most Subversive Studio

How R&D1 married form and function to create some of Nintendo's most interesting oddities.

By: Bob Mackey February 15, 2012

Take one look at the recently released Rhythm Heaven Fever, and you'll wonder if it's actually a Nintendo game. This waggle-free two-button experience serves as a major contradiction to Nintendo's Skyward Sword, which perfected the one-to-one motion controls we all wanted from Twilight Princess back in 2006. But, as fans of the series know, Rhythm Heaven's reductive approach isn't an intentional attempt to undermine Nintendo's evolving motion technology; rather, this colorful, candy-coated musical rollercoaster evokes a philosophy pioneered by Research and Development 1, an internal studio which eventually stood as the iconoclast to their parent company. And even after a major 2005 restructuring dismantled R&D1's 35-year history of bizarre and fascinating experiments, the team's quirky design sense lives on today with Software Planning and Development Group No. 1, a Nintendo studio now responsible for offbeat series like Rhythm Heaven and Wario Ware.

Minecraft Developer's Upcoming Game Exemplifies the Best of the Game Industry

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 04:23 PM PST

Most games take years to develop, but Minecraft developer Mojang plans to make one over a single weekend. Announced on Wednesday, Mojang intends to livestream a new game's creation over 60 hours and is partnering with the Humble Bundle team to raise money for charity. This latest announcement follows in the footsteps of other innovative Mojang projects which could only take root in a field as open to creativity as the game industry.

Starting Friday, February 17 at 10 A.M. Central European Time (1 A.M. US Pacific Time) Mojang will begin work on a brand new title. The company will answer questions via Twitter and promises "silly incentives" for reaching donation goals. Eager fans can even get involved now and vote for the genre and theme of the prospective game on Mojang's website. "Of course, you?ve always wanted to play a Shoot Em?Up Dating Simulator with a Candy Land World War II theme. Choose wisely!" warns the company.

Got Vita? Don't Miss These Great PSP Games

Sony's new system may not be 100% backward-compatible, but it's home to plenty of worthwhile PSP classics.

By: 1UP Staff February 15, 2012

The PlayStation Vita is almost here. But did you kow Vita's launch lineup has more to offer than Uncharted Golden Abyss and Lumines Electronic Symphony -- a large collection of great PSP games are available to download on the PlayStation Store. We understand that backwards compatibility is a touchy subject for PSP owners, and the current lack of a UMD solution doesn't help at all, but if downloading some worthwhile PSP classics is something you're interested in, here's a list of recommended titles and some games currently MIA that we'd like to see added in the future.
