Lime Odyssey
When trying to describe the Muris, one of three races for Aeria Games' Lime Odyssey, the phrase "cute as a button" pops into mind more than once. The Muris are a diminutive, "mischievous" people who spread chaos and giggles wherever they go. Players who choose a Muris character will have access to all four of the game's classes, and will begin their journey in the town of Pripet in the Shimmering Island.

We have a treat for you today: the world-exclusive premiere of the Muris introductory cinematic as well as several new screenshots of these bite-sized troublemakers!

Lime Odyssey is scheduled to release sometime in 2012.

Behind the Mask: The real state of the game

Although Champions Online's most recent State of the Game has been out for a while, I sort of avoided talking about it in previous editions of Behind the Mask. The main reason was because I really wanted to cover the new powersets. However, that doesn't mean I don't have any comments on it.

If you look at the history of the State of the Game and Ask Cryptic entries, they fluctuate quite a bit between good information and annoying PR. The January SOTG was full of annoying PR, and it bothered me greatly. It felt dishonest. I saw a lot of hype on little things that no one wanted and very little on what people really wanted.

This week, I'm going to talk about the real state of the game: where CO is and where it needs to go. I'll also talk about some of the future stuff that Robobo mentioned in the SOTG. Is it good or bad? We'll see!

Play the MMO that never dies with Mythos Global's open beta

      Mythos title image
Mythos is the MMO that almost wasn't, then was, then wasn't, and then was again. The free-to-play Diablo-esque MMO was in playable beta as far back as November 2007, but its release was plagued by problems you wouldn't wish on your worst enemies.

Mythos has somehow survived its entire original development team being fired, legal battles over the intellectual property rights to the game, and being kicked from publisher to publisher. Now in its third incarnation as Mythos Global, the game will soon relaunch to excited fans, and to curious gamers who didn't play it while it was live.

If you didn't snag one of Massively's keys for the closed beta back in December, your chance to play the game starts now! Mythos Global officially entered open beta today, with free registration available via its new publisher T3Fun.

The Daily Grind: Could you make your own MMO for $30 million?

          Richard Garriott in space
Massively gets a certain amount of grief for writing news stories about Richard Garriott. While it's true that he hasn't made a major contribution to the MMO industry since the 1990s, it's also true that he's something of a touchstone when it comes to geekery and ambition. If a guy can go from being a young astronaut hopeful to having a spare $30 million to burn on a spaceflight, that's got to count for something, doesn't it?

While we're on the subject of a spare $30 million, yesterday's Garriott piece got me to thinking about what I would do if I had that kind of pocket change. While spaceflight and a lifetime supply of Hershey's kisses are certainly high on the list, I'd use a good chunk of the money to make my own MMO. What about you, Massively crew? Would you self-finance an MMO if you could, and what would it be like? Would $30 million be enough?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Today's a big day for fans of Tribes: Ascend, and it's also a big day for Hi-Rez Studios, the Atlanta-based indie firm behind the upcoming online shooter.

You see, today is patch day, and while that's not terribly unusual (Hi-Rez has updated the Tribes beta client early and often since the start of closed testing last November), the latest tweak is a bit of fan service that will likely bring smiles to the faces of franchise die-hards waiting in the wings to see what becomes of their baby.

WildStar discusses the exotic and alien human race

              Posted: 01 Feb 2012 06:00 PM PST

Try and read the entry out loud without trying to fit in the word 'shiny' or 'verse' a couple times.
Humans are the standard basis for comparison in games that feature non-human races, almost as if said games were being made by humans for other humans. But there's still a distinct flavor to the human race depending on the setting. Case in point, the latest WildStar "interview" with one of the three lore characters from the cinematic trailer gives players a peek at a typical human, and he's a bit different than what you might have been expecting.

While the other major characters identify a specific world as "home," humans are portrayed as being a bit more free-forming, having roamed out in space for so long that they're really not bound to a location. The entry also discusses some of the lore behind being an Explorer and some of the perils associated with intentionally venturing into the unknown (it involves lots of things that try to eat you, if you need the short version). If you've been enjoying the flavor of the world Carbine Studios is slowly building, you'll probably enjoy this latest look as well.

Free for All: Old Second Life documentary still highlights truths

So I was working on this week's Free for All last night when a buddy of mine asked me if I had seen a certain older Second Life documentary. I didn't think I had before, but it turns out that my usual record of consuming everything MMO still stands, and it was fun to re-watch the older documentary again for several reasons.

One of the most important things I noticed about the film was just how universal to MMO gaming the documentary was. The issues it brought up are still issues, the problems with virtual worlds are still problems, and the fact that any technology older than six months looks laughable on film is still true. It was also encouraging to see how well Second Life has aged since 2007, but it's slightly depressing to see just how horrible MMO documentaries can be at showing the entire picture.

                A Mild-Mannered Reporter: A critical year

It's been a little over two years now that I've been writing a regular column on City of Heroes, and in one sense that still feels very strange to me. I'm guessing that the novelty of doing this for a living is never going to entirely go away, for reasons that really have nothing to do with the topic of this column. But I'm not going to dwell on the more meta facts here; I'm going to focus instead on the past year of the column.

This year was a try for something slightly different in both the tone and approach that I'd been taking with these columns. I finished off one major project, started another one, and along the way, I found that I gathered a very different attitude over time. In relationship terms, the first year of A Mild-Mannered Reporter was apparently still the "gushing" phase of a new relationship. This year has been much more about the flaws that City of Heroes has, both in structure and in design choices.

Pathfinder Online promises to let players stumble into adventure

I'm not sure where the judicial branch comes in, but I'm thinking it should be on here.
Pathfinder Online is still too early in the development process to do much more than talk about principles, but said principles are certainly of interest to fans. The most recent development blog about the project discusses that game's PvE arm, which is meant to be an important part of the game without being the sole driving force. Instead of the game being driven by players going, gathering quests, and then going out to kill monsters, the development team hopes to create an environment where players go out to do something and then find themselves in the midst of a quest.

Four basic types of interconnection are outlined, ranging from wandering monsters to potential beasts attracted by overharvesting an area. (Cut down too much wood in an area and wood-dwelling creatures my start attacking lumberjacks... or some nasty flying monsters might decide the cleared area would make for an excellent nest.) It's certainly an interesting set of principles going into design, making the entry well worth a read for sandbox enthusiasts.

The site has a wealth of information covering several aspects of ArcheAge's fourth closed beta phase, including multiple skill guides, lore, and various videos. If that's not enough for you, there's also the latest beta patch notes that are available via Google translate. Check them out to learn more about siege ladders, the game's family system, and importing your own graphics for cloaks and ship sails.

EA reveals SWTOR subscription and sales numbers, beats financial predictions [Updated]

Screenshot -- Star Wars: The Old Republic
It looks like Star Wars: The Old Republic didn't let its daddy down, as EA has reported much better sales than expected for the December quarter, largely thanks to the runaway sales of the new MMO title (as well as many of EA's other heavy-hitters). The company ended up earning an adjusted $344 million for a total net loss of $205 million, which isn't too shabby if you consider how much money just went into the development and launch of The Old Republic.

Perhaps most interestingly to players, however, is the fact that EA has reported sales of more than 2 million units of The Old Republic with about 1.7 million subscribers. Those are the highest (and the hardest) numbers we've heard so far. EA's Chief Financial Advisor, Eric Brown, stated in an interview that EA managed to pull in more SWTOR subscribers than the studio had initially anticipated. He added that at launch, the studio was able to add a great number of users per server courtesy of some technical improvements. The company also notes that "Active subscribers means anyone paying OR in their trial period. MOST of those 1.7m are paying at this point."]

Being able to animate your character during creation is a nice touch.
Last week's polls were enough for me to get started in the world of Ryzom over the weekend, so I took my first steps back into the game that I haven't played for quite some time. I still remembered how some of it worked, thankfully, but there were a lot of elements that I'd almost completely forgotten. And while I'm still knee-deep in the starter area, I've played enough to at least get some starter impressions.

But let's make this a full narrative, yes? When we left off, the group verdict was that I would be starting out as a Zorai with the Magic starter package based off of a female Shakespearean tragic character. And thus, with only a little extra effort, Corlede was born into the world of Ryzom. The character creator offers a variety of features, allowing you to select your character's build in fine detail but offering a strange lack of certain other options. There are also some odd constraints on character types -- you find yourself always locked within a certain general band of height, for instance, so there are no really tall Trykers.

MechWarrior Online delves into the art of role warfare

                    Art -- MechWarrior Online
Last week, we got to take a look at MechWarrior Online's freshly introduced CN9-A Centurion BattleMech. This week, however, the folks at Piranha Games want to give you some insight on what to do once you're seated in the cockpit of your giant robot, so they've dropped a new blog post titled Role Warfare for fans' consumption. The post first introduces players to the various roles available to MechWarrior Online players: scouting, assault, defense, and command. The roles are exactly what they sound like. Scouts gather intel, while assault 'Mechs assault and defense 'Mechs defend. Command mechs, believe it or not, command their respective teams.

But how do you customize your 'Mech to fill one of these roles? As players progress through their matches, the BattleMechs that they use in battle will gain XP according to their battle performance. This XP can be spent to unlock upgrades in the BattleMech's tech tree. Each BattleMech will have its own distinct tech tree, and therefore its own distinct upgrade options. At certain points within the Tech Tree, players will receive Pilot Points, which are assigned directly to the player's pilot avatar and are used to purchase pilot abilities in the Pilot Skill Tree. Finally, players can purchase BattleMech modules with their C-Bills, which allows for the final layer of specialization on the customization cake.

For the full details on the game's customization and upgrade system, and to get a run down of some recommended loadouts for various roles, click on through to MWO's official site below.

Aboard the Empire's great warship BioWare Austin, the Star Wars: The Old Republic community team has put a bounty on passionate leaders for the first SWTOR Guild Summit on March 4th through 6th. The summit is designed to facilitate direct communication between guild leaders and the developers as well as provide a lucky few with an advance sneak peek at some upcoming features.

The best thing about the summit is that any qualifying guild leader interested in helping to shape the game's future can apply to be a part of the summit. The official website has an application form up, although those who want to be considered for the summit need to fill it out by February 10th.

BioWare stated that it has already invited some guilds and that the remainder of the summit will be invite-only due to the limited size of the event. It's important to note that while the event itself is free, attending leaders have to assume the responsibility for transportation, room, and board.

TERA news is coming fast and furious lately, and luckily for En Masse, today's blurb is a good one. The game is officially available for pre-order, and as you would expect, there are all kinds of options relating to various gifts and gadgets depending on where (and what version) you purchase. There's also a bit of beta bribery in the form of automatic access to all five of the closed testing phases that begin this month and continue through April.

                    What about the editions?

Well, you can choose between standard, digital collector's, and physical collector's version, and the latter two come with an in-game mount and a couple of unique necklace items. The physical collector's edition justifies its $79.99 price point with a cloth map, a soundtrack CD, a handbook, a compass, and a letter of marque. En Masse is also offering a couple of exclusives for purchasing directly through its online store.

                    Richard Garriott on the ISS
Richard Garriott may not be making the MMO sequel that many of his fans crave, but he is the subject of a new documentary film called Man on a Mission. VentureBeat.com recently corralled the elusive creator of the famous Ultima franchise for an extensive interview.

The piece is mainly focused on the film, which is currently playing in select cities as well as various on-demand internet outlets. The documentary presents Garriott's career as an underdog triumph, and highlights the fact that he was rejected for NASA's astronaut program due to his poor eyesight. Garriott had the last laugh, however, as he bought his way to the international space station in 2008 and became the first second-generation astronaut in American history (and a noted supporter of private-sector space flight).

While there's precious little info regarding Garriott's current and future gaming pursuits, the interview does offer up some geeky nuggets for those interested in rockets and rocketmen. "For example, launch you think of as this loud, shaky, scary moment," Garriott explains. "In fact, on a liquid-fueled rocket like the Soyuz, it's almost perfectly silent and smooth on the inside. It's much more cerebral, it feels much more like a ballet move, lifting you ever faster into the sky, than it does a sports car dropping the clutch at a green light."

We knew that Allods' latest expansion was coming soon. We didn't know exactly when, though. Thanks to gPotato, we're now comfortable penciling in February 15th on our free-to-play fantasy calendar.

Game of Gods is "the biggest expansion ever to hit Allods Online," and it will bring a new Bard class, objective-driven PvP arenas, and new raids to the table. New weapons and armor, new allods and astral layers, and some sort of loot-drop lottery card system are also on the way. That's not all, though, and the game's official website has a full listing of the patch's features and functionality.

Repulse - Hey look, more F2P screenshots with a UI!
Aeria Games has sent word that its Repulse sci-fi shooter has shed its beta tag and is ready for prime time. The company is celebrating release day with four new maps, an east coast server, and a high-ping safeguard feature designed to "provide a better experience for everyone."

Repulse was previously known as Genesis A.D., and though Aeria refers to it as an MMOFPS in today's press release, it's actually more of an online shooter given that it features 16-player mayhem and the usual capture-the-flag and team deathmatch-flavored gameplay. It's free-to-play, and you can see it in action via the trailer after the break.

Why You Should Ignore Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning’s Constant Namedropping

                        Posted: 02 Feb 2012 06:41 AM PST

When I was in junior high school (centuries ago), I always found the metalhead clique at my school intimidating. Rangy boys with long, oily hair and a collective uniform consisting of boots, black-washed jeans, and black T-shirts imprinted with art from album covers by bands whose names bore gratuitous double consonants and lent themselves to harsh, angular logo designs, the metalheads always hung out together at the side of gym class, discussing their heroes’ latest wailing guitar concoctions and glowering at the rest of the world. They sported the shifty desperation unique to 14-year-olds jonesing for a drag on a stolen cigarette.

It was all kind of alarming for us clean-cut students whose main ambition for gym class was to avoid notice by the jocks and dropouts while hanging out on the sidelines discussing the latest Zelda strategies with each other (dude, if you just keep going up when you get to that one spot in the mountains, there’s a dungeon there!). In hindsight, though, I realize that the metalhead kids were harmless. They never picked on anyone; they never caused trouble outside of skipping class to hang out and listen to noisy music. They were as geeky as the video-game-fixated A-students; the only difference between us was that their obsessions were wrapped up in an affected antisocial style. Their music may have been about volume and screaming and satanic posturing, but it was just that: Posturing. Underneath it all, those guys just wanted to do their own thing, and they wore their ragged Dokken shirts with pride because they sincerely thought that airbrushed zombie warriors chained to naked, guitar-wielding sex slaves was, like, so awesome.

                        Anarchy Online Review

                        Posted: 02 Feb 2012 01:29 AM PST

Anarchy Online is a 3D Sci-Fi MMORPG originally released as a subscription-based game, but it's now available for free. Anarchy Online has four playable races and a whopping fourteen different classes to chose from. While the core game is now free, playing through the expansion pack content still requires a monthly subscription.

                        Publisher: Funcom
                        Playerbase: Medium
                        Graphics: Low Quality
                        Type: MMORPG
                        EXP Rate: High
PvP: Duels / PvP Zones / Guild Wars
                        Filesize: 1.58 GB

                        Website: http://www.anarchy-online.com/

Pros: +Large game world. +14 classes & an in-depth skill system. +Player run economy & cities.

Cons: -Dated graphics and gameplay. -Expansion pack content only available to paying members. -Limited Sci-Fi elements during the early stages.

Anarchy Online is one of the oldest MMORPGs that's still around and still shows signs of growth. The Sci-Fi theme set it apart from the competition during its original release and continues to be a source of strength and originality. The sheer level of detail when it comes to character growth and available classes is breath taking. Even though it was released 8+ years ago, Anarchy Online has a much more complex skill system and far more professions (14) than most games being released today. Unfortunately, the graphics and combat system have not aged well. Those looking for a fast-paced game with exciting fights may be disappointed. But if you're looking for a deep game with a player driven economy, be sure to read the full review.

                        Races:

Solitus - Direct descendants of humanity. Solitus are balanced in all of their basic abilities.
Opifex - Bred for stealth and speed, Opifex value their agility over strength and stamina.
Nanomage - Originally created as Nanotech research assistants, Nanomages have more Intelligence, Psychic, and nanopool than other races. They are the most frail race and depend less on physical abilities like Strength, Stamina and Agility. Nanomages are considered harder to play at high levels due to their low health.
Atrox - Designed as mine workers, Atrox were made genderless. They are large hulking beings that favor Strength and Stamina over Intelligence, Psychic, and Sense. Atrox are much heartier and have greater health, but less nanopool than other races. Atrox are the easiest race for beginners to play because of their high health, though they make poor casters.

                        Professions:

Adventurer - At home in the wild, Adventurers resemble rangers in many ways. They use both ranged and melee weapons and even possess healing abilities. Preferred weapons: 1H edged & pistols. Preferred breed: Solitus
Agent - The masters of the shadow, Agents focus on concealment and subterfuge skills. Their weapon of choice are snipers which can deal heavy damage from a safe distance. Preferred weapons: Rifles. Preferred breed: Opifex
Bureaucrat - Though weak in combat, Bureaucrats can build robots to fight for them. They make natural leaders in group situations. Preferred weapon: Pistols. Preferred breed: Solitus
Doctor - The primary support profession that specializes in healing. Doctors can also use biotoxins to slow down and weaken opponents. Preferred weapons: Pistols, SMGs, Shotguns, 1H edge, Martial Arts. Preferred breed: Solitus
Enforcer - Close combat specialist. Physically superior to other professions, they bear the brunt of enemy attacks while relying on others to heal them. Preferred weapons: All, though they excel with 1H or 2H blunt & edged weapons. Preferred breed: Atrox
Engineer - Like Bureaucrats, Engineers shun direct combat and construct battledroids to fight for them. They also have powerful abilities to support their droids. Preferred weapons: Pistols, Launchers, Shotguns, Martial Arts. Preferred breed: Solitus
Fixer - Fixers are the only profession that can access 'The Grid' and teleport themselves and their team across the world at the speed of light. Fixers are difficult to hit and have abilities that limit the maneuverability of their opponents. Preferred weapon: SMGs. Preferred breed: Opifex
Keeper - Close combat specialist who uses 2H edged weapons. Keepers have the unique ability to share life and diverse powers with nearby allies. This profession is only available with the Shadowlands expansion. Preferred weapons: 2H edged.
Martial Artist - The best at dishing out raw combat damage, Martial Artists rely solely on unarmed combat. Martial Artists can also use healing spells and abilities. Preferred breed: Opifex
Meta-Physicist - This profession can summon material entities and use them in combat though their own combat skills are low. Preferred weapons: Bows, 1H blunt, Pistols. Preferred breed: Nanomage
Nano Technician - The premier casters of Anarchy Online. They possess powerful area-of-effect spells and other offensive abilities. Their use of physical weapons is weak, however. Preferred weapons: Pistols. Preferred breed: Nanomage
Shade - Shades are a sneaky profession that relies on stealth and concealment. They suck the life and energy out of opponents rendering them defenseless. Shades cannot wear armor but have high natural defense. Available only to those with the Shadowlands expansion. Preferred weapons: Piercing. Preferred breed: Opifex
Soldier - The premier offensive profession, Soldiers rely on armed combat and defensive skills to stay alive. Preferred weapons: Assault Rifles. Preferred breed: Solitus
Trader - The businessman of Anarchy Online. In combat, they have the ability to drain opponents of skills, energy, and health and transfer it to themselves or allies. Preferred weapons: Shotguns. Preferred breed: Solitus

Skyrim Workshop Could Bring Mods to the Masses Like Never Before

                        Posted: 01 Feb 2012 06:37 PM PST

For all of its bugs, glitches, and issues, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still a remarkable game. As I’m sure was the case for many other gamers, the promise of eventual mod support was in and of itself enough reason for me to purchase the game on PC. Expansive mods are no longer all that far off as support is in place for the Skyrim Workshop now that the 1.4 update is available through Steam.

As demonstrated in the video above, Bethesda will soon be releasing the Creation Kit (mod-making software comprised of the same tools used to make the game) to the masses, enabling those who are so inclined to begin creating new content for what is already a content-rich game. Mods do exist for Skyrim but they are largely limited to things like UI refinements, improved world maps, enhanced textures, and so on. The Creation Kit should allow for a great deal more than that.

What’s especially exciting is the Skyrim Workshop, which is the name now being used for the Skyrim section of the Steam Workshop first announced in December. The latter half of the video shows why this is a big deal: mods created in the Creation Kit can easily be uploaded right to the Workshop so that users can browse, rate, and comment on them. Most importantly, mods can be installed with a single click.

Games have become more mod-friendly in recent years, but the process for installing them can still be daunting to less tech-savvy gamers. Backing up files and extracting ZIPs and merging folders may not sound like a big deal to you, but for others it can be a confusing mess that only becomes more complicated when it comes time to update or uninstall those mods.

Also an issue with mods is the discovery process. Sites like Skyrim Nexus do exist that compile mods in one place. The problem is such a site is a step removed from the game and Steam, and it therefore might never be discovered. Even if it is found, some gamers might be wary of downloading files that don’t come from an official website.

The Skyrim Workshop appears to solve each one of these issues — discovery and installation happens right within Steam, minimizing the amount of effort involved and maximizing the exposure mods receive by bringing them to an audience who might not even be aware that mods exist. Bethesda isn’t making the Workshop the only place to get mods, eliminating any worries of Bethesda or Valve censoring mods they don’t approve of while still providing a safe and easy place for mods to be shared. It’s really nothing but good news as more gamers will get to enjoy the wonderful world of mods and modders will find themselves with a larger pool of potential downloaders for their projects.

The only caveat is you need Skyrim for PC. The system requirements aren’t especially demanding by today’s standards, though the ideal situation would be for these mods to made available on consoles. Bethesda production director Ashley Cheng mentioned the possibility in a blog about the impending Creation Kit release, writing, “We’re going to keep looking for ways to get mods to more people, and hopefully one day to our console audience.”

Maybe this could happen through an extension of Steam, as we’ve already seen Valve’s platform used in the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2. For now, though, we’ll have to settle for mods being more accessible than ever before for PC gamers.

                        Dragon’s Prophet (TW)

                        Posted: 01 Feb 2012 06:37 PM PST

If you missed out on my previous posts for this game (link), Dragon’s Prophet is a Taiwan-developed MMORPG conceived by Runewaker, the same minds behind Runes of Magic (RoM). As the game’s title suggests, there will indeed be many interactions with the grand and majestic reptile, dragons. I shall skip the storyline and go straight into some of the core gameplay features.

So just how many dragons are there? Well, there is no official number yet, but according to exclusive presentation slides, there are currently 8 different categories of them. According to the slides below, they are: Heavy (thick outer skin, able to carry heavy weights), Predator (balance in both speed and attack), Rush (fastest land travel speed, hunts in numbers), Flying (rulers of the skies, the only dragon type with which can fly other than Ancients), Gliding (gliding ability due to body structure, ambushes prey), Aqua (strong jaws and moves fastest in the water), Bug (a type with various alternative looks and abilities) and Ancients (rarest dragon type).

So what do players actually do with all these dragons? Well, you catch and train them of course! Pretty much like a pet system, players will have to allocate skills for them, fight with them and PvP as well!

But do take note of what types of dragons you are gunning for (especially in terms of size), as the player below might find that out in a hard way…

Talking about PvP, there will be guild territories to fight for and construct your own town, house, castle (as the location for PvP territory control), resources and more, which you can see in the slides below. I just drooled thinking about the different types of dragons fighting each other in mass PvP combat @_@

Instanced dungeons wise (what would MMOs do without them), there are currently 2 types revealed, adventure and storyline. Each dungeon will have 5 different difficulty level as well, making it possible for players to solo them (I am guessing not many good items drop then).

Before I forget, and it actually did not cross my mind till I was about to publish this post, there are currently 4 player classes selectable. They are loosely known as Dragon Blood Warrior (melee tank), Dragon Shadow Ranger (physical ranged), Dragon Breath Wizard (magic ranged) and Dragon Theory Disciples (support). Apparently the dragons are really getting the VIP treatment in this game.

There are many cross-servers functions being planned as well. As of now, only the Taiwanese and Japanese (under Aeria Games Japan) are confirmed. Currently taking part in Taipei Game Show 2012, perhaps more overseas servers will be confirmed in due time.

The most recent version of the game was made using the Unreal 3 engine and has an interface similar to other shooting games. Squad Designated Marksman – While not a sniper, the SDM engages targets further away than other riflemen with a specially designed M16A4 DMR.

Skyrim Workshop Could Bring Mods to the Masses Like Never Before

For all of its bugs, glitches, and issues, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still a remarkable game. As I'm sure was the case for many other gamers, the promise of eventual mod support was in and of itself enough reason for me to purchase the game on PC.

Why You Should Ignore Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's Constant Namedropping

                        Posted: 01 Feb 2012 05:00 PM PST

Before the demo from two weeks ago, all most people knew about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was that it's the first product of a studio that boasts a roster containing baseball legend Curt Schilling, comics and action figures guru Todd McFarlane, Dungeons & Dragons scribe R.A. Salvatore, and Internationally Celebrated Game Designer Ken Rolston. That, along with the basic boast of how Reckoning mashes up the combat of God of War with the expansive world of an Elder Scrolls title, dominated public awareness of the game.

We've seen the game a few times, but even those demos were either a brief and out-of-context presentation or, in Jeremy's case, a long yet woefully out-of-context hands-on session. Jeremy had the unenviable task of jumping into a late-game area completely cold, dealing with a combat system and boss encounter designed for people who have been playing the game for 30-plus hours and a story moment that, while cool-looking, was dense with Salvatore's Amalurian jargon. In contrast, I've been playing a final copy of the game for a good 40 hours (and have only recently reached the area that Jeremy was thrust into), and while my final thoughts will have to wait until next week's review, I find that once I played the game at my own pace, it managed to grab and hold onto me more than any other time I'd seen it.

The Free-to-Play Shift Continues: Rift Now Free Up to Level 20

                        Rift

As if EverQuest dropping subscriptions wasn't enough of a sign that the subscription-based MMO business model will eventually be replaced by free-to-play, Trion Worlds has announced it will begin allowing players to experience a good chunk of Rift's early game content for free.

It's an identical move to the one Blizzard made last summer in the face of declining World of Warcraft subscription numbers. Coinciding with the release of the 1.7 update, a version of Rift known as Rift Lite is debuting today. By signing up for a free Trion account, you will be able to play up to level 20 without any restrictions on how long you can play for. Previously the trial available would only allow for seven days of play time before requiring the game be purchased in order to continue. That was a more significant free period than WoW's (which allowed you to play for only 48 hours), though removing the time limit altogether is a smarter approach.

Review: Mutant Mudds Proves to be Worth the Asking Price

                        Posted: 01 Feb 2012 02:30 PM PST

As a rule, I like to avoid to discussing price and value when reviewing games. Who am I to say how anyone else should spend their money? Finances are a tricky enough topic on their own, and I'd never presume to know the first thing about anyone else's money matters, how they determine their gaming budget, or what they find valuable in a game. However, the matter of pricing has largely dominated online discussion of Mutant Mudds for 3DS, up to and including the game's developer, Renegade Kidd, throwing their own hat into the ring.

The developers have been very up-front about the game's somewhat premium price (at least as far as eShop games go) and the thinking behind that decision -- namely, the fact that Renegade Kidd hopes to stay in business. This in turn has sparked debate over Nintendo's handling of the eShop versus Apple's approach to the iOS App Store, the pricing of non-retail games, and ultimately may have played a part in the game's price coming in "slightly lower than expected" at $8.99.

Zynga's Alleged Copycat Seems to be Lacking the Innovation it Preaches

                        Zynga, Buffalo Games

Although it was hardly the first time it had been accused of copying an existing game, accusations that Zynga had cribbed the design of Tiny Tower struck a more sensitive nerve than usual. Maybe that's because Tiny Tower is more beloved and well-known than, say, a game like Farm Town, which seems to have had a pretty clear influence on FarmVille. As expected Zynga has denied the allegations and even suggested those complaining about their games being copied are not as innocent as they would have you believe, though it still remains to be seen where Zynga has innovated on the Tiny Tower formula.

Following in the footsteps of Tiny Tower developer NimbleBit, Buffalo Studios released an infographic contrasting the recently-revealed Zynga Bingo with its own Bingo Blitz game. There are certainly similarities, though Zynga posits the reason its game resembles Buffalo's is not because Zynga copied the competition.
