Walmart to Offer $170 3DS Early, Letting You Get the Best of Both Worlds - Report

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 06:00 PM PDT

3DS

Nintendo is dropping the price of the 3DS on August 12 from $249.99 to $169.99. It'll be less than five months after the system was released in North America, so Nintendo has a plan to make it up to early adopters by giving them 20 free downloadable games.

In order to qualify for the free games, you need to connect to the eShop by the end of August 11 to become a 3DS Ambassador. Some people have spoken about buying a 3DS before then, connecting to the eShop, and then price matching the system after it goes down in price. This way, they can pay $170 for the system but still get the free games -- ten of which are Game Boy Advance games Nintendo claims it doesn't have any plans to sell on the eShop.

According to Cheap Ass Gamer, there might be a much easier way to go about getting the best of both worlds. Walmart is reportedly going to begin offering the new $169.99 price next Tuesday, August 9. Assuming you pick one up in time, you'd have the chance to upgrade to the latest firmware and connect to the eShop, qualifying you for the free NES and GBA games.

Diablo III Always-On Reaction "Surprised" Blizzard; Fighting Piracy Not the Goal

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 04:24 PM PDT

Diablo III

There has been an outcry of frustration since it was revealed earlier this week that Diablo III requires an active Internet connection in order to play. The news came on the heels of Ubisoft announcing the same thing for Driver: San Francisco, bringing back a DRM policy it had used with past PC games like Assassin's Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction.

There is at least one key difference between the two, at least from Blizzard's point of view: Diablo isn't doing it to keep pirates away. And it doesn't see this as a punishment to those who want to play solo.

Blizzard's online technologies VP Robert Bridenbecker admitted to MTV Multiplayer that he was "actually kind of surprised in terms of there even being a question in today's age around online play and the requirement around that." As he sees it, that's the direction the industry is going, and there are many benefits that come along with it.

EA's Peter Moore Promoted to Chief Operating Officer

Peter Moore

Some restructuring is going on within Electronic Arts, it was revealed today. The biggest of these moves is that EA Sports President Peter Moore has been promoted to the role of Chief Operating Officer, putting him right near the top of the publisher's hierarchy.

In a message on the EA website, CEO John Riccitiello outlined the changes, which he called "the first material re-organization" since the EA labels structure was set up in 2007. He believes what has happened over the past four years has been successful, as EA has built an expansive digital business and increased the quality of its games.

"Now, we are switching from defense to offense. We're focusing on building our intellectual properties/franchises into year-round business. We've established our own platform, Origin, and we continue to grow our digital business," he wrote. "We are already seeing big returns on our investment in change. That's why this is precisely the right time to update our organization."

QuakeCon Steam Sale Sees TF2 Get Quake's Rocket Launcher, Fallout's Pip-Boy

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 02:24 PM PDT

Team Fortress 2 Quake rocket launcher

Team Fortress 2 is a standalone, free-to-play game these days. The series originated almost 15 years ago as a mod for the original Quake, which itself just celebrated its 15-year anniversary in June. With QuakeCon kicking off today, Steam is featuring a different sale each day from now through August 7 on various id and Bethesda content.

To coincide with the sale, Team Fortress 2 is getting a number of new items, the most noteworthy of which is a recreation of the original Quake rocket launcher. It's usable by the Soldier and includes the old sound effects, just as you remember them. You can get it by picking up Quake IV, which is now available on Steam for $19.99. That might be a lot to spend to get a TF2 item (although the new ray gun that was added not long ago costs $9.99 alone), so you could instead opt for today's deal on the Doom and Quake complete pack for $29.99.

Other new TF2 items you can now get include The Wingstick (by pre-ordering Rage), the Tamrielic Relic helmet (pre-order Skyrim), a Brink mask (own Brink), and a replica Pip-Boy for the Engineer (own Fallout: New Vegas). All of these items are only available for the length of QuakeCon, so you'll want to act quickly if you're desperate to have them.

Battlefield 3 Pre-Order Bonuses, Early Beta Access Detailed

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 01:09 PM PDT

Battlefield 3

Those with early access to the Battlefield 3 beta will get in 48 hours before it goes live for everyone else. This is available only to people who either purchased Medal of Honor's limited edition or pre-order the digital version of BF3 through Origin. As for all of the other perks that are available for pre-ordering, that's a bit more complicated.

As with a number of Electronic Arts games these days, the first wave of copies of Battlefield 3 will be the limited edition version. You can guarantee yourself a copy of the LE by pre-ordering; if you plan on picking the game up and playing multiplayer, you'll want to make sure you do that: it comes with a code to download the Back to Karkand expansion pack, which is said to be the size of Bad Company 2's Vietnam expansion. Karkand includes a number of remastered Battlefield 2 levels and other content. We've known all along it would be available separately for non-LE buyers, but we now also have a price: $14.99. The content will be made available to everyone at the same time after launch.

Other pre-order bonuses, as officially outlined today, are available at select retailers, making it a slightly complex process to figure out the ideal place to pre-order. Early beta access is only being offered through Origin, as is exclusive Battlefield Play4Free content. Other places will offer gear for your Xbox 360 Avatar, an in-game dog tag pack, the SPECACT kit upgrade (additional multiplayer skins), and the Physical Warfare pack (exclusive items that will be released for free at a later time). It should be clear by mid-August which places will offer what content.

Is This the First Screenshot From Bungie's New Game?

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:59 AM PDT

Bungie Tiger

As promised, Bungie has released a nearly hour-long video documentary recapping the developer's past 20 years. Perhaps the most interesting part is what could be the logo and the first image of Bungie's new game, which we now know is officially codenamed "Tiger."

Towards the end of the video, we see a few seconds of a desert-looking landscape with snow-capped mountains in the background. (A screenshot of the sequence is above.) You'll also notice a number of windmills that are attached to powerlines and some sort of destroyed object to the left, although it's hard to tell what it is.

Shortly after, we also get a shot at what may be the game's logo (below), which just so happens to look like what was found along with a trademark of the name Destiny earlier this year. Destiny was the name used for the new game by a contractor who claimed to have been fired by Bungie. This led to him or her spilling the beans on what is reportedly Bungie's next project: a massively-multiplayer first-person shooter. The Tiger code name was also used by the alleged contractor.

Vita Won't Reach U.S. and Europe Until 2012

Vita

Sony has been deliberately unspecific in naming a release date for the PlayStation Vita. The language used when describing its launch has been a "phased global rollout" later in 2011, though it was unclear if that did or did not mean it would reach all regions by the end of the year. Now we have an answer: Sony boss Kaz Hirai has revealed the system will make it out in Japan this year, but it won't be until early 2012 that the United States and Europe get their hands on the PSP successor.

Hirai announced the news earlier today in Japan, according to an AP report. He didn't provide exact dates for any of this, but at least we know that the Vita won't be in the the hands of U.S. gamers prior to the holidays -- at least not without importing from Japan.

Vita's Wi-Fi model is currently set to cost $249.99 in the U.S., and $299.99 for the 3G-equipped model. Hirai denied that Sony was considering a price cut in light of Nintendo's recent move with the 3DS.

Since the dawn of video games, only a few have been turned into edible endeavors. The award for most notable video game cereal goes to the Nintendo Cereal System, which promoted two of the most popular games on the NES at that time -- Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. We were curious to see what the 1UP Community thought might make delicious additions to the breakfast cereal line-up, and here they are.

Forsaken World (CN) - Guild War arrives

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 06:07 PM PDT

It has been some time since I touched on any new for Forsaken World, so here I am today with this small update. The new Guild War was just added a few days ago, and like most of the PvP features, there is a fixed timing. For the China server, this takes place every Saturday evening. Every Tuesday, the announcement for registration will appear, while guild leaders (with guild base and god status upgrade) can sign up on Wednesday and Thursday. This actually cost some gold found in the guild stash.

Coming along with the Guild War will be a ranking chart of course. The chart will be refreshed everytime a battle ends and the appropriate prizes will be given out. So how does this Guild War works? It is basically like the Capture the Flag mode found in most online shooters! There will be 8 crystal mines for the 2 guilds to conquer simply by standing beside them. The more players standing, the faster it will be occupied.

There will be 3 different categories as well calculated according to the number of players. These 3 are 100 Vs 100, 60 Vs 60 and 30 Vs 30. Of course, there will be more elements within the Guild War map, but I shall not spoil the fun!

There will be a new PvE instance as well, loosely translated as Tornado Mirage. This new 4 area instance is for players between the levels of 75-80, with each players able to do this instance 100 times per week. You can see the artwork of each area's boss below.

This PvE instance will drop all 5 parts of the Hero set for all classes, including experience books, purple scrolls and more! It will be the toughest but most rewarding dungeon yet in Forsaken World.
