Alter-Ego: What's in a name?

While it is incredibly tempting to go off on a tear about the major decision announced this week to reboot the entire DC Comics universe, starting 52 new comics at issue #1 and essentially retconning every hero and villain we've known to date, this week's column isn't about that. After all, this isn't a comics site, and we've already heard from the DC Universe Online developers that the continuity in the game is separate from that of the overall DC Universe. (Considering how much we heard that noted in the recent chats, we wonder whether Sony Online Entertainment didn't know this major shake-up was on the way.) As such, I suspect we will see the game's storyline remain essentially intact, at least until the point at which we finally take down Brainiac once and for all. After that, it's anyone's guess. Depending on how the reboot works, it might well shake up the game's direction if the new comics are doing well with readers.

No, instead our superpowered game is getting its own different version of a restart in the promised upcoming MegaServer merges. While before we had multiple servers, each side will now have two -- one PvP and PvE for both PC and PS3 players -- giving us a total of four. Over this mad-scientist server-mashup, the issue of collisions looms. This week, we also found out that the merges will not only affect player names but league names as well, ensuring that there is plenty of confusion and concern on the part of the playerbase.

Will MegaServers be the bane or balm of DC Universe Online's population issues? What precisely are the facts and fallacies? Whom will this affect? Join me behind the break as I take a look at the overall situation!

WRUP: Nobody ever talks about what's actually wrong with addons edition

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Yesterday, my mailbox was almost entirely defined by the addition of addons to RIFT. And I've got to say, folks, you are complaining about the wrong things here. The real threat of addons has nothing to do with making the game easier -- it has to do with trying to re-download all of your addons every single time there's a patch. Really, if your endgame is trivialized by a mod that tells you not to stand in a patch of flames, it wasn't exactly world-class to begin with.

Moving on from the obtuse flamebaiting, it's time for this week's WRUP! We are not talking about addons in the slightest this week, as it happens -- we're talking about what we're playing over the weekend as well as whether or not there are too many free-to-play titles on the market at the moment. So jump past the break for our weekend diversions and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments!

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite mode of travel?

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

From the earliest days of video games, players have understood that there's a lot of ground to cover. Of course, you could always walk around like an animal, but most MMOs give you a variety of different ways to get from place to place. Aion lets you take to the sky on wings, City of Heroes lets you take to the sky on absolutely nothing if you like, and Guild Wars lets you just teleport wherever you want to go once you've visited at least once.

Whether you're hopping on a flight path in World of Warcraft, fueling up your ATV in Fallen Earth, or setting off at warp speed in Star Trek Online, it's still the same core concept -- going from point A to point B in the fastest and most stylish fashion possible. So what's your favorite way to fly, drive, or ride around your game of choice?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Avatar breaks out the banhammer for Perpetuum cheaters

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:00 PM PDT

Rut roh! It's banhammer time in Perpetuum, the sci-fi indie sandbox from Avatar Creations. The latest Avatar dev blog has the (sparse) details courtesy of Dev Calvin. Apparently some players availed themselves of a game exploit that allowed for significant gains in robots, equipment, and other commodities. It's not as innocent as it sounds, though, as the dev blog makes clear.

"The method that was used can by no means [be] interpreted as intended gameplay. A lot of technical preparation and effort went into the experimentation and execution," Calvin writes.

The ill-gotten gains have of course been removed, and Avatar has also permabanned the offending accounts, which sends a clear message as to the type of zero-tolerance policy toward cheating on display in the world of Nia. Check out the official Perpetuum website for more reading material.

Trion Worlds and Syfy to debut Defiance at E3 2011

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:00 PM PDT

Three years ago, Syfy announced that it would be teaming up with RIFT creator Trion Worlds to construct the world's first MMO that would actively intertwine with a live-action TV series. This project became Defiance, which will be making its debut at E3 2011. The groundbreaking project will create a shared universe for the game and TV series, with each influencing the other through actions the characters and players take.

The game -- an action-based shooter that will be released on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 -- will be set in the San Francisco Bay Area, whereas the TV series will take place around St. Louis, Missouri. Both, however, take place on the same conflict-torn future Earth where humans and aliens coexist, though whether they do so peacefully or not remains to be seen. Lars Buttler, CEO of Trion Worlds, has this to say about the project: "This is essentially the convergence of the television and gaming industry into one fully-developed cohesive property. Syfy is creating a television show that takes place in the fictional universe that the game is set in. The game and the show will constantly [influence] each other from the moment they simultaneously launch." If done properly, Defiance could bring a new level of persistence and player influence to the genre. Keep an eye out for more on this upcoming title as E3 draws ever closer, and be sure to head over to Hollywood Reporter for the full article.

RIFT confirms development of an addon API

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:00 PM PDT

It's been rumored for much of the day with implementation scattered throughout the test client, but it's been confirmed -- addons are coming to RIFT. In a post to the official forums, James Nichols explains that the game's addon API is currently being tested for implementation, with the hope that players will be able to customize the game's interface while still maintaining the high level of quality found throughout the game. A precise release has not been stated, as the API is still in its earliest stages of development.

Fan reaction has been mixed, as addons have long been a contentious element of many games -- some players feel that they strip down complexity of play, and there are obvious comparisons to be drawn with World of Warcraft. At the same time, the promise to allow free customization and alteration to RIFT has many players excited and looking forward to the new feature. Either way, it's coming to the game, so only time will tell what the implementation will bring.

[Thanks puremallace for the tip!]

Storyboard: Motivational seekers

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Every character has a reason for adventuring. Call it what you will, depending on setting, but there's always a reason you're out in the midst of danger rather than sitting back at home with a nice cup of tea, even if that reason is "home isn't an option any longer." Motivation is one of the big elements informing the entire archetype discussion series of columns -- it's all about why a given character would do one thing and not another.

Of course, the game itself doesn't have any way of integrating that motivation.

Much like the issues with lore, the problems of reconciling a game's stated motivation with your character's actual motivation can be pretty thorny. Especially in this day and age of quest hubs and heavy storylines, it can sometimes feel like all the efforts to draw you into the game world are pretty severely curtailing your ability to enjoy it. After all, you've envisioned a set of reasons for your character's actions already, and by all accounts she shouldn't even be talking to a questgiver -- except that said questgiver is the only way she's going to keep advancing in the game.

Wasteland Diaries: F2P?

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT

There are some big changes coming to Fallen Earth in the very near future. Sector 4's Alpha County is looming on the horizon. There is a new skills-and-abilities system coming. We don't know when we're going to get it, but we are going to get it. But the biggest news is the game's new partnership with GamersFirst. GamersFirst is the company responsible for the rejuvenation of APB: Reloaded and its conversion to the free-to-play format (F2P). I've heard mixed reviews on what's going on with APB, but without any first-hand experience, I'll withhold judgment.

Nobody has come out and said that Fallen Earth is going to convert to the F2P business model, but it's a pretty safe assumption at this point. Every GamersFirst title is F2P, so why would FE be any different? I haven't tried APB, so I'm in no position to judge the performance of GamersFirst on what has been done with that title. F2P can be a two-edged sword, and the FE community is strongly divided on this subject (at least on the forums). I am a member of the optimistic side, and after the cut, I'll tell you why I think this move could be a very good thing for Fallen Earth.

One Shots: Gotta love the classics

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT

We've seen plenty of impressive mounts this week on One Shots, but the classic appeal of a horse never fades -- especially when it represents the time and effort taken to acquire it. Massively reader Valerie owns a mount in Lord of the Rings Online that illustrates this nicely:
There are no flying mounts in Middle-earth, unless you're Gandalf and are getting a lift from your friend the giant eagle. However, there are horses you can buy and a few special horses that are rewards for collections of deeds ("reputation"). This particular mount is the Steed of Eriador and required a lot of work throughout Middle-earth.
The developers of so many games have a great time with the mount system, letting their creativity shine and giving their quirky senses of humor free rein. This is the week to show off your greatest, funniest, or hardest-earned mount. Send us a screenshot at oneshots@massively.com along with your name and the name of the game, and tell us a little about what your awesome ride is and how you came by it.

Finally, don't forget to get the jump on next week's One Shots theme: unusual foes. Send us the funniest, most strangely designed, or scariest enemy you've taken on in an MMO and we'll share it here on One Shots!

Darkfall dev blog talks new dungeons, siege changes

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT

A while back we brought you word that Aventurine was looking for feedback on Darkfall's siege mechanics. Though the process is still ongoing, it seems as if the devs have gotten a good sampling from the community thus far according to this week's activity report.

Your opinion is still needed, though, so head to the Darkfall Epic Blog and weigh in on the maximum number of clan attackers during sieges. This week's report also details a bit of the PvE-related goings-on, and the world of Agon is getting a new themed dungeon for each continent in the very near future. "All of them are huge and have different areas that you need to traverse. Doing this, however, leaves you with choices as to which way to go and which challenges to face," says the blog entry.

There's a bit of PvP info as well, and the requisite teases for the new expansion. Read all about it at the official website.

The Road to Mordor: Making your alts work for you

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

I have a confession to make. My name is Justin, and I'm a Lord of the Rings Online altoholic.

I know. I have a problem! I'm weak! DON'T STARE WITH THOSE ACCUSING EYES!

I always start out in games with the best of intentions: I'm going to stick with just one character, at least until I hit the level cap. I'll only make new characters to reserve names I like. I won't get class envy and wonder what's on the other side of the fence. I'll stay strong! I'll be an oak!

And then I turn out to be a willow tree, blowing about in the winds of whimsy, and suddenly I end up with alts staggered all over the leveling track. It's all right; I've come to embrace my altoholic tendencies because it really is who I am as a gamer. I like to sample everything, to try out different approaches to the game, and if I don't end up with a maxed-out uber-raider, then I can live with it.

If you follow this pattern and are prone to rolling up a lot of alts in LotRO, there are several advantages you can gain over the monogamous players out there. Today I want to take a look at how you can make your alts work for you, if only to give you an excuse to keep rolling them!

First Impressions: Gods & Heroes

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:30 PM PDT

I've seen the gameplay in Gods & Heroes before. I've played games that were built on the same idea with similar lore, and I've definitely tried games that featured the same kind of quests. I've seen a lot, to say the least, so I really like it when a game surprises me a bit. I'll be really honest and say that I don't really even like the ancient Rome setting. It's not fantasy enough for me, sort of like MMOs set in World War II. Or Canada.

Still, I was asked to take a look at Gods & Heroes, and so I did. Up to that point, I had heard a lot about it, but most of it was negative. It's buggy, they said. It's ugly, too. So you can imagine my surprise when I felt surprised when I logged in. Granted, there was plenty of blandness in certain areas of the game, but the estate system and NPC groupmates made me think that this team might just have something.

Click past the cut and I'll tell you more.

Luvinia Online begins closed beta signups, releases teaser trailer

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Outspark announced today that beta sign-ups for its upcoming free-to-play fantasy MMO Luvinia Online have begun. The game is already live and "highly successful" in China, and Outspark hopes to duplicate that success in the west. Philip Yun, Outspark's COO, claims the game is "a big labor of love," and touts it as an "action-packed 3D MMORPG [that] is brimming with all the monsters, allies, and challenges that you expect from an Outspark title."

The game itself seems to be more or less standard fantasy fare; "The world of Luvinia beckons players into a realm where humans, orcs, gnomes and dwarves once co-existed in peace; however, destiny never stands still," claims the press release. Information on the game's mechanics is sparse, but we do know that there are three class archetypes -- Warrior, Rogue, and Mage -- with "12 subclasses for specialization." Presumably, this means four subclasses for each archetype -- but you never know! Some archetypes get all the love. The game also boasts both underwater and interstellar travel, with "over 50 cities to visit and 130+ maps to explore." If your interest is piqued, you can head past the cut for a short teaser trailer, then sign up for the closed beta at the official site.

SWTOR reveals plans for E3, advanced class powers, and a new tie-in comic book

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:30 AM PDT

BioWare descends on the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 7th, but its exact plans regarding the Star Wars: The Old Republic show were held close to the chest -- until now. Thanks to the community team in Austin, we now have a good glimpse at what will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

An ancient threat grows restless on the planet of Belsavis; the entire galaxy is at stake; and both the Republic and the Empire will suffer. A group of heroes is deployed to Belsavis to counter this terrible evil in the next revealing trailer for SWTOR called Eternity Vault.

Visitors to E3 will witness two in-game plotlines. First, a showdown of patriots and a usurper who has laid claim to the throne ignites the planet of Alderaan. Second, players take on sand people on one of the most iconic planets in the Star Wars universe: Tatooine.

Also, The Old Republic birthed a new tie-in comic book. Alexander Freed, a lead writer at BioWare Austin, penned this latest tale titled the Lost Suns. The comic book features a spy named Theron Shan, who is combing the galaxy for clues to what the Empire has been doing since the Treaty of Coruscant. Freed expounds on some of the hidden secret on the official site.

Lastly, more detail has been revealed about the Advanced Classes on the official site, including specific powers for each tree. For a complete breakdown of revealed powers watch the Hyperspace Beacon on Tuesday.

For the rest of the gory details be sure to visit the official SWTOR website and don't miss our live coverage from E3 all next week.

Bylos also has some interesting things to say about The Secret World's sandbox elements and its endgame, and you'll find all that and more after the cut.

Clarification - Luna Online and Iris Online

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:01 PM PDT

In my previous post, I revealed that Nexon had bought over 20% of Korean developer Eyasoft's shares. Eyasoft's online games included Luna Online, Iris Online and Legend of Edda. All 3 games have since stopped its service in Korea and I did state that it is possible (not confirmed) that the English services might be affected in terms of game updates.

One of gPotato's representatives had since emailed me about the matter and will like to clarify with players and assure that content updates will still be available for Luna Online and Iris Online for the North American versions. While I was asked to take the games' logo banners down, I believe it is within my rights to put up the Korean versions' game logos unless being told otherwise.

Xbox Live 'Diamond' IPTV Service to Debut at E3 - Report

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:45 PM PDT

Microsoft Mediaroom guide

Rumors of an IPTV service for Xbox 360 have been around nearly as long as the system has. Back in 2007 there were hints about such functionality being brought to Xbox Live, and even more recently the notion hasn't gone away. A new report suggests a subscription TV service, to be called Xbox Live Diamond, will be announced on Monday at Microsoft's E3 media briefing (which you can watch right here at 1UP).

WinRumors claims a demo is being prepared to show next week but that not all of its features may end up being on display if certain deals aren't made in time. "Microsoft is currently in last minute negotiations to secure the necessary agreements in time," said the site's anonymous source.

Back in March, word surfaced once again of a 360 IPTV service, this one carrying the code name Orapa and said to be launching later this year. It was described at the time as "a combination of Xbox Live and Microsoft's Mediaroom IPTV" as well as social aspects of Live (including Avatars) and Kinect.

What to Expect From Combat in Crimson Alliance

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 04:54 PM PDT

Crimson Alliance

There's no shortage of new action-RPGs these days. Diablo is still king but D3 may not be out for a year or more, and console versions are not a sure thing. Age of Booty developer Certain Affinity announced Crimson Alliance earlier this week, an action-RPG that it said would have "fast-paced" action and co-op support for up to four players. Multiplayer alone sets it apart from a game like Torchlight, and as Certain Affinity President Max Hoberman told 1UP, the hope is that its combat will help to further set it apart from the competition as well.

"We wanted to really focus on fast-paced, dynamic attacks, so player skill is just as important as character stats," said Hoberman. "This starts with powerful, intuitive controls, clear and unobtrusive interface, and characters with a wide array of diverse abilities."

Enemies won't necessarily do the target lock routine and make a beeline for you or your co-op partners. Some will try to surround you while others restrict your movement, immunize other enemies to specific attacks, or make use of the environment to get the upper hand.

Here's What Call of Duty Elite Offers For Free

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 04:18 PM PDT

Since being announced earlier this week, there has continued to be some confusion (and outcry) over Call of Duty Elite. It's unclear what elements of the service you'll be paying for -- Activision isn't providing those details because much of it is tied into parts of Modern Warfare 3 it isn't ready to talk about -- but to help clear things up a bit, an FAQ has made its way onto the Web that explains how parts of it work, why it was announced now, and what will be free.

It's frequently reiterated in the FAQ that nothing you've come to expect from a Call of Duty title is being removed. That includes multiplayer: playing online is still free, and as the FAQ puts it (in bold, underlined text, no less), "Even haters can play for free."

Everyone, Elite subscriber or not, will be able to purchase downloadable content just as you've been able to in previous games. If you do opt to pay the as-of-yet unannounced monthly fee, you'll get all of the "playable game DLC" for Modern Warfare 3 free of charge. That includes any map packs, though it's unclear if the way that's phrased -- "playable game DLC" -- means there might be some sort of non-playable DLC that even Elite subscribers will have to pay for, or if it's simply a strangely-worded statement. (It could simply mean things like avatars and themes for PSN and Xbox Live.) Another feature already announced for subscribers is a Call of Duty-themed web series.

Black Ops Escalation DLC Makes it Way to PS3 June 10

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:52 PM PDT

Call of Duty Black Ops Escalation

Microsoft's exclusivity deal with Activision for Call of Duty downloadable content ended up being unnecessary for the Escalation map pack. With the PlayStation Store having just returned this week after more than a month of downtime, PS3 players wouldn't have been able to access it even if it had been released alongside the Xbox 360 version on May 3.

Sony is publishing content more frequently than it normally would in order to catch up on missed content (more stuff went up today, in fact), but it'll be another week before Black Ops players can get any new maps. With PlayStation Network operations fully restored, Activision has announced it will be releasing the DLC next Friday, June 10.

The $15 Escalation DLC includes four new competitive multiplayer maps (Hotel, Convoy, Zoo, and Stockpile) and a special Call of the Dead map for Zombies mode. Featured in Call of the Dead are the likenesses of a number of famous actors -- Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Danny Trejo (Machete), and Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) -- in addition to famed zombie movie director George Romero.

Michael J. Fox Lends His Voice in Back to the Future: The Game Finale

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:47 PM PDT

Telltale's episodic Back to the Future series features the voice of Christopher Lloyd, who reprised his role from the movies as Doc Brown. Michael J. Fox, on the other hand, has not been involved; the voice of Marty McFly was left up to AJ LoCascio, who does a terrific impression of Fox. For the fifth and final episode, releasing on June 23 for PC and Mac, Fox will be making a special appearance as the voice of one of the game's characters.

Seen briefly in the video above, Telltale won't give up the identity of the character. The only hint being given is that it's someone Marty met in the films. Any guesses?

The entire series is being offered for $19.99 from Telltale's online store for a limited time. You can also pick up the first episode for free on PC and Mac or on the iPad from now until July 31.

Watch Seven-Plus Minutes of Rage Gameplay

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:01 PM PDT

Rage is a pretty game -- that's clear from the screenshots. Bethesda is very confident you'll think it looks even better in motion, and as such, it's released another trailer today, this one with nearly eight minutes of gameplay footage.

It cuts around a bit, but it's all in-game and shows off the mission entitled The Well, where players visit the town of Wellspring to stop the water supply from being poisoned by a group of bandits. It's not the first gameplay trailer to be released, but this is quite possibly the best-looking of the bunch. Although there's no sign of multiplayer in this particular clip, it is featured in the game -- but it wasn't always planned to be. There's more about that in 1UP's interview with design director Matt Hooper.

Rage will be out on September 13 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Google Acquires Postrank

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:54 PM PDT

prGoogle has made it known this afternoon that It has acquired social RSS startup Postrank. Details like price were not immediately available. But this deal definitely show how serious Google is with its "social everywhere" strategy. You might never have heard of Postrank, but you're going to wish you had. New registrations are closed already.

Postrank lets users plug in any RSS feed for analysis. The service then ranks all feed items by number of comments, inbound links, shares on Twitter/Facebook, as well as other social cues. The user can subscribe to a feed of just the top items. The suspicion is that Postrank technology is going to become part of Google Analytics.

Does that mean the Postrank service is going away? It wouldn't be unheard of. When Google acquired Gizmo5 they ended up shutting down the service. It wasn't until much later that VoIP calling technology from Gizmo was built into Gmail. Are you a Postrank user? Feeling a little anxious today?

Blackberry Playbook Review

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:29 AM PDT

Pretty impressive—if you don't like email, apps, or games

For the record, the Maximum PC Lab keeps both feet planted squarely in the present tense. We don't believe anyone should buy hardware based solely on its future potential. So what then to make of RIM's nascent and decidedly half-baked Blackberry Playbook? Unless you're 1) a Blackberry owner, 2) don't care about apps or games, or 3) a devoted BB fanboy, the answer is: not much.

By the time you read this, it's possible that the Playbook might be more complete via OS updates. The release version, however, omitts some basic functions. It has no native email client and no native calendar app. To access either, you need to bridge your existing Blackberry to the Playbook. What's that? You don't have a Blackberry phone? Or your Blackberry isn't near your tablet? Well then you get no email. RIM says a pending update will deliver stand-alone email.

Among the Playbook's few redeeming features is its gorgeous—albeit smaller—screen.

What else is missing? There's no 3G or 4G wireless connectivity. There is a dearth of apps, including no Amazon Kindle, no Netflix, no Hulu, and no audio/video marketplace. (In Kindle's place is the surprisingly excellent Kobo Books app and store.) There are poorly designed buttons, including an oddly placed power switch. There is buggy, crash-prone desktop client software. And the OS is, well, it exhibits the kinds of bugs any 1.0 release does: flickering screens, unreliable syncing, and so forth.

It's not all bad, however. Given RIM's propensity for building underpowered smartphones, we were surprised to discover that the hardware itself exceeded our expectations. The 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A-9 CPU and PowerVR SGX540 GPU offer impressive heavyweight performance that the OS actually appears to take advantage of. Almost everything—downloads, web browsing, and the ability to multitask music, movies, camera functions, and even games—feels snappy.

The 1024x600 capacitive touch screen LCD is a gem. It's spectacular enough that we deem it king of all tablet displays—including the iPad 2. And the Playbook's battery life holds up fairly well, easily going several days in a row before needing a charge when performing basic functions. This may prove to be an illusion, however, once we see more CPU-intensive games and apps.

Finally, we found ourselves appreciating the OS interface the more we used it. It's a significant departure from Android and Apple in that it relies entirely on gestures instead of buttons to navigate between apps and the home screen. It's simple and we like it. And truth be told, even the email client is solidly functional—provided you can get into it.

But this is the big problem with the Playbook. For now, it's all if, then, and when. Awesome HD video viewing? Great, but there's no streaming content. Multitasking? What are we going to multitask? Front-facing camera? That's cool, but no apps make use of it.

Unless and until RIM finishes fleshing out the Playbook, there's no reason to buy it. After that, this tablet might be onto something.

Disconnecting File-Sharers Violates Human Rights, Says UN

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:29 AM PDT

Creative associations and ISPs have been trying to cast copyright-infringing file-sharers as digital boogeymen for years now. They've also been lobbying for a version of the Internet based around baseball: three copyright violation strikes and you're out of the Internet, cut off not just from P2P but also Twitter, email and MaximumPC.com. "Hold your horses," says a special report by the UN's Human Rights Council. Apparently, three-strikes-style laws aren't just a ridiculous overreaction, they're a violation of human rights.

"The Special Rapporteur considers cutting off users from Internet access, regardless of the justification provided, including on the grounds of violating intellectual property rights law, to be disproportionate and thus a violation of article 19, paragraph 3, of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights," Torrent Freak cites.

Bam! Take that, draconian file-sharing laws. Frank La Rue, the author of the report, specifically calls out existing French and English legislation. He suggests that governments need to relax, take a chill pill and remember that they're supposed to look out for the rights of their citizens as well as economic interests.

The UN's Human Rights Council is scheduled to officially adopt "The Report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression" today. Try saying that three times fast!

Syria Cuts Internet Cord Prior To Attacking Protestors

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 10:53 AM PDT

How do you silence the voice of protestors when they just won't pipe down? If you're a heavy-handed Middle Eastern government, you cut the cord on the Internet. Egypt pulled the plug on the Web during its recent revolution; today, Syria found itself plunged into an information black hole as the government shut down the Internet prior to taking an aggressive response to anti-government protestors.

"The Syrian government has cut off Internet service (3G, DSL, Dial-up) all across Syria, including in government institutions," USA Today reports, passing along the information from al-Jazeera, a major Arabic news network. The timing apparently coincided with reports of anti-government protestors taking to the streets in droves.

Internet analysis company Renesys said that as of 3:35 P.M GMT, "the routes to 40 of 59 (of Syria's) networks were withdrawn from the global routing table." Contradictory to the USA today report, Renesys reports that the Syrian government's networks are still responding, although occasionally slow. "The networks that are not reachable include, substantially, all of the prefixes reserved for SyriaTel's 3G mobile data networks, and smaller downstream ISPs including Sawa, INET, and Runnet," the company's blog claims.

So why the secrecy? USA Today, citing al-Jazeera's still-live Syria blog, is reporting that Syrian forces have opened fire with machine guns on a crowd of 50,000 protestors in the major city of Hama, with a similar attack occurring in the city of Deir Azzour. Over 27 deaths and 200 injuries have already been reported in Hama alone. Syria didn't pay attention to the lessons of the Egyptian revolution; the Internet is everywhere, and word always gets out.

This week's hottest reviews on TechRadar

HTC Sensation

This week we've reviewed the fabulous new Android handset from HTC - the HTC Sensation.

Featuring the first dual-core Snapdragon ARM-based processor, it comes with Android 2.3 and a new version of HTC's own software.

We've also reviewed the latest Canon PowerShot SX230 HS compact as well as the Panasonic TX-P42GT30B 3D plasma among scores of other reviews. Read on for the full list.

HTC Sensation review

Ever since the first wave of Android phones washed up on these shores, HTC has been at the forefront of the fight against Apple and its iPhone. The first major assault came in the shape of the HTC Hero. Then came the HTC Desire. And here we now have the HTC Sensation. Sporting the latest version of Android and a revised version of HTC's own Sense UI overlay, it's a cutting edge phone with cutting edge software. The hardware's a bit good too – the 1.2GHz dual-core processor offering plenty of power for multitasking and multimedia performance. Is it better than the Samsung Galaxy S2 though? We're not convinced.

Panasonic DMR-BWT700 review

This could well be the best set-top box in the entire universe. Offering most of the same features as its sister device (BWT800) but with a much more agreeable price tag, it's a powerful do-it-all living room performer to be proud of. Key features include dual Freeview HD tuners, 3D Blu-ray playback, Blu-ray recording from all sources (except Sky 3D), media streaming and IPTV. For a little over £500 it's a shining light of the AV world, then, and while the BWT800 will get the headlines (it's got more storage, Wi-Fi and an extra HDMI output) the £900 price will send people flocking to its little sister.

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS review

Canon has upped its game of late. With increasingly pressing competition from the likes of Panasonic, the performance-to-price ratio in the compact camera world is being stretched constantly. Unfortunately with global exchange rates the way they are currently, we're not getting the best prices but we're still getting a lot of bang for our buck. The SX230 is a super little compact which offers a 14.1MP sensor, 14x optical zoom, 1080p video recording and built in GPS for geotagging your snaps. It's an excellent performer all-round, but is ultimately let down somewhat by a weak battery life, inconsistent GPS results and an itchy flash that's a bit too keen to pop up.

Panasonic TX-P42GT30B review

Panasonic's GT30 range of 3D plasmas represents its attack on the not-quite-premium but still-awesome-and-good-value market. Containing both dual Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners, it's a brilliant 2D TV while also offering excellent 3D performance with both 3D Blu-ray and broadcast-3D inputs. Watch out though – the price is attractive, but this set doesn't come with any Active Shutter 3D specs.

Zotac GeForce GTX 570 review

If you're running an Intel system and are looking to drop £280-ish on a GPU upgrade, this is probably the card for you. Offering stunning gaming frame rates and decent price-to-performance ratio, the GTX 570 is an office favourite. However, if you're running an AMD system, you'd be better off going for AMD graphics too.

Nvidia GeForce 275.33 Drivers Now Available for Download

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:57 AM PDT

If you own a GeForce videocard, you can get a jump on your weekend gaming session by downloading Nvidia's GeForce 275.33 driver package that was just released. This is the first WHQL-certified driver from the 'Release 275' family and adds support for the recently launched GeForce GTX 560 videocard, plus a handful of performance gains in select games.

Nvidia says if you've been using the v275.27 beta driver, you may have noticed a "significant performance drop in The Witcher 2." That's been resolved in this new driver release, and you can expect up to double digit performance gains in titles like Bulletstorm (with AA enabled) and Batman: Arkham Asylum (with PhysX set to High) using a GeForce GTX 580 or 560 videocard. Version 275.33 also purportedly increases gaming performance by up to 12 percent for dual-core CPUs in CPU-limited cases, Nvidia says.

Outside of raw performance gains, v275.33 adds a bunch of new features and enhancements, including a new Nvidia Control Panel user interface; automatic SLI, multi-GPU, and AA profile updates that are silently installed to your PC; improved desktop resizing UI; bundled 3D Vision Controller driver; support for new 3D Vision projectors (NEC NP-V300X series); and more.

Sony the Victim of Another Hack Attack, was "Asking for It"

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:38 AM PDT

Have you heard the one about Sony getting hacked? Of course you have, only this time the cyber attack didn't target Sony's recently restored PlayStation Network (PSN). Instead, the hacker group known as "LulzSec" took aim at Sony Pictures and reportedly made off with personal information of more than 1 million users, as well as music codes and coupons. But hey, Sony was "asking for it," the hacker group said.

"Every bit of data we took wasn't encrypted. Sony stored over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it's just a matter of taking it. They were asking for it," LulzSec said in a statement.

"Our goal here isn't to come across as master hackers, hence what we're about to reveal: SonyPictures.com was owned by a very simple SQL injection, one of the most primitive and common vulnerabilities, as we should all know by now," LulzSec continued. "From a single injection, we accessed EVERYTHING. Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?

LulzSec posted the personal information to its website, info that included passwords, email addresses, home addresses, birth dates, and all Sony opt-in data associated with user accounts. The group also says it viewed all admin details of Sony Pictures, including passwords, and compromised 75,000 "music codes" and 3.5 million "music coupons."

"We are looking into these claims," said Jim Kennedy, executive vice president of global communications for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Asus Begins Shipping Three Eee PC Models with Ubuntu

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Let's rewind to the beginning of the netbook revolution (or shall we say bubble). It was a time when everyone felt Linux was finally going to take off in a big way. The open-source operating system may have failed to ride the netbook wave, but it still holds a key advantage over Windows where price is concerned. This is what briefly placed it in the driver's seat of the netbook bandwagon.

Now that netbooks are under serious pressure from tablets and price is an even more significant consideration for vendors, Asus has once again turned to Linux. It has decide to ship three Eee PC models with Ubuntu 10.10 pre-installed on them.

The Eee PC 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX are the three models that Asus began shipping with Ubuntu 10.10 from June 1, 2011. According to a press release issued by Canonical, the company responsible for Ubuntu, more Eee PC models running its distro are on the way "and will be made available throughout the year."

"Many businesses are turning to Ubuntu as they look for a cost-effective, proven, and easy to use and manage operating system that can be delivered on business-quality laptops," Chris Kenyon, VP OEM Services at Canonical. "We expect the slim form factor and great design of Eee PC, combined with the great performance delivered with Ubuntu, to produce a real performer in the marketplace."

But it's strange that Asus has opted for Ubuntu 10.10, even though the latest version of this popular Linux distro (version 11.04) came out in April.
