Darkfall Unholy Wars unveils custom role tutorial Posted: 10 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Darkfall, Classes, Game Mechanics, Patches, Previews, News Items, Sandbox The introduction of custom roles to Darkfall Unholy Wars is going to mean a major shakeup to the way that skills work overall. It's getting patched in today, and if you're not ready for the change yet, you're in luck; a tutorial video has just been released and is embedded just past the cut. If you want to be a master of magic with a two-handed weapon and leather armor? You can make that happen now. As previously revealed, players will be able to select eight role skills, one ultimate skill, and 16 total skills fr their custom arrangement. You can also choose your attribute boosts as well as the requirements of gear -- if you'd like heavy armor to be gated by your Dexterity instead of your Strength, that's a thing you can do. While the tutorial won't explain to you how to make a good built, it will give you the tools to make one properly. Tamriel Infinium: The big thing that Elder Scrolls Online got right Posted: 10 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Lore, PvE, Opinion, Mac, The Elder Scrolls Online, Subscription, MMORPG, Tamriel Infinium I've spent a lot of time over the last few weeks explaining and complaining about the issues I have with Elder Scrolls Online. Some of my readers got the impression that I neither like nor play the game. The reality is that I do like the game, but I'm horribly frustrated with it. Many of the ideas and promises that the developers set up for the game just aren't happening (or aren't happening fast enough). That's made me not want to log into the game. The fact that the game isn't roleplay-friendly hasn't helped, either. Despite all my misgivings, ESO does compel me to log in for one main reason: the story. And not just the story but how well the characters are written and how the story is told. The subject matter isn't bland and cliche. The characters are taken seriously, even when the story is humorous, regardless of gender or race. Although I cannot give you every example here, I would like to touch on a couple of the stories that exemplify what I mean by great storytelling in an MMORPG. As a result, all donations will be refunded and the team will hand out in-game outfits for its supporters. The team hasn't said die yet, stating: "We are working hard to find alternative solutions for funding this great project and we hope we will be able to count on you in our future endeavours." Currently, the team is doing a post-mortem and considering its next steps. Some of the possible options for future funding that the team is looking at include a Kickstarter campaign and a publisher. The Daily Grind: Has E3 become irrelevant to MMO gamers? Posted: 10 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Events (Real-World), MMO Industry, Opinion, Massively Meta, The Daily Grind, Events (Massively's Coverage), Miscellaneous During last year's E3, I asked the Massively readers whether they thought E3 was slowly becoming irrelevant for MMO gamers thanks to 1) competing, gamer-friendly conventions like PAX and 2) E3's focus on tech and blockbuster non-MMO titles, not to mention 3) the expense of showing at a venue like E3 for smaller MMO studios and existing games. Lore Hound's Patrick Mulhern recently voiced similar concerns, suggesting that MMOs in particular show poorly at conventions partly because of the noise-and-visuals-induced sensory overstimulation of the arena but also because few MMOs provide a "hook" that can grab a typical attendee during a 15-minute demo. Consequently, he argues, it's not worth the trouble for studios or MMO journalists to attend. Massively writers are present at this year's E3 to report on MMOs, but we're curious what you think all the same -- has E3 become irrelevant for our genre? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Daily Grind: Has E3 become irrelevant to MMO gamers? originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 10 Jun 2014 08:00:00 EST. SWTOR's Spoils of War update offers casinos, tweaks group finder Posted: 09 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Events (In-Game), Game Mechanics, PvP, News Items, Free-to-Play, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dev Diaries, Dungeons In Star Wars: The Old Republic's most recent dev blog, designers Chris Schmidt, Alex Modny, and George Smith discuss the major game systems headed to servers with the 2.8 Spoils of War update -- specifically, the Nar Shaddaa Nightlife event, PvP tweaks, and the story mode ops group finder. - Nar Shaddaa casinos will feature slot machines that award special buffs, weapons, armor, cosmetic abilities, and mounts -- like a ridable Rancor -- to lucky gamblers.
- Participants in Galactic Starfighter matches and Warzones will begin receiving double rewards, and two new ship variants, the Assault Bomber and Skirmisher Gunship, will become available.
- In an effort to reduce queue time, the group finder will utilize the 16-man story mode difficulty for operations and bolster gear rating for all players. Rewards will also be increased.

E3 2014: See Dawngate's 'badass bookish nerds' honored in a new video Posted: 09 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Free-to-Play, MOBA Dawngate is looking to bring a little something different to the MOBA field, as evidenced in its catchphrase, "break the meta." In a new video, Waystone Games devs list off several reasons why Dawngate isn't your average MMO. These include more of a focus on flexible team strategy, an epic storyline, and even the embrace of "badass bookish nerd" characters. Is this all just big bluster or shrewd design strategy? Check out the video after the jump and let us know what you think. Warframe announced today at E3 that it will be heading to the console sometime in 2014 as a self-published title. Having the freedom to develop and publish Warframe on our own terms is the true definition of independence to us. E3 2014: The Division will get content updates on Xbox One first Posted: 09 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Patches, News Items, Consoles, MMOFPS, Post-Apocalyptic, Miscellaneous While The Division has been delayed until next year, players will have their choice of platforms on which to play it. Unless, of course, those players really want to have the newest updates every time, in which case they're going to need to play on the Xbox One. At Microsoft's E3 opening presentation, developers revealed that content will come to The Division on the console first, prior to the PlayStation 4 or the PC. The announcement was accompanied by a brief gameplay trailer and some recap of the game's mechanics and setting. While it was originally scheduled to launch this year, the game was officially delayed until 2015 last month. WildStar tips for every player Posted: 09 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Video, Game Mechanics, Guides, WildStar, Subscription, Buy-to-Play Do you know the fine points of dyeing gear in WildStar? All of these things are true, and a new video by WOBO just past the break takes a few minutes to point out all of the tips, tricks, and other fine points that you might not have noticed while playing the game. Sure, some of these are probably familiar to players who have been in the game for a while, but some of them (like the bonus interrupt damage) might be new even to players who have been in since the earlier beta phases. Caves and swimming come to Landmark Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, Patches, Free-to-Play, Sandbox It's Big Patch Day over at Landmark, and the new caves are the darling of the update. These underworld passages (are there any other types of caves?) offer a different type of environment to explore and exploit. Larger deposits of ore and special treasure chests are the rewards that the dev team is dangling to prospective spelunkers. Interestingly enough, these caves are only the first "phase" of several that will see these subterranian landscapes expanded. Other additions in today's patch include underground resource detection, the ability to swim, a makeover to plant harvesting, and tweaks to trees and potions. You can read up on the patch notes on the official forums and watch a preview video of Landmark's caves after the break! Lineage II expands to Ertheia this summer Posted: 09 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Lineage 2, Expansions, Free-to-Play NCsoft's popular Lineage II MMO announces a new expansion coming later this summer. Entitled Ertheia, this expansion brings with it a new race (the Ertheia), new hunting zones, and more. "Ertheia, born of the wind, were created by the god Sayha," the game's lore states. "Renowned for their beauty, everyone longed to keep them near. But like the wind itself, they never wanted to stay in one place for very long, and suffered if they were confined. For ages, the Ertheia made their home in the Wind Spirit Realm, away from interaction with the Material Realm. But a catastrophic event has thrust Faeron Village into Aden. And now these graceful, deadly warriors find themselves engaged in a life-or-death battle against Shilen in a strange place." Lineage II recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in North America and features NCsoft's Truly Free business model.
