Nevada Approves Self-Driving Cars for Use

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 02:49 PM PST

google carNevada drivers might be seeing a new sight on the roads in the coming months. That state is the first to officially approve self-driving cars to use public roads. This is a necessary first step for Google's autonomous vehicles to move forward, but other firms are likely to follow suit. Nevada worked with Google, as well as various industry groups and law enforcement to develop the regulations that will govern self-driving cars.

For the time being, all self-driving cars will have a bright red license plate so drivers will be able to identify them. If the vehicles are even approved for public use in the state, those cars will have a green plate. There will be special licensing procedures for companies to go through before self-driving cars can be used in the state. Clearly, everyone is being very cautious, but Google isn't worried. In 2010 it announced that its self-driving cars had driven 160,000 miles without incident.

Google's driverless cars make use of range-finding and image recognition technology to stay on the road. Humans will still need to be present in the driver's seat for now, but who knows how long that will last? Napping on the way to work, anyone?

UK Student Gets 8 Months in Prison for Hacking Facebook

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 02:30 PM PST

Glenn ManghamA UK court handed down an 8 month sentence this week to a British student convicted of infiltrating Facebook's internal network. 26 year-old Glenn Mangham hacked into Facebook's servers from his home in York, England last Spring. Facebook, believing it was the victim of industrial espionage, called in the feds. It didn't take long to track down Mangham.

Prosecutors have called this attack both "extensive and flagrant." Facebook told the court that it had to spend $200,000 dealing with the matter. Though, that seems to be what Mangham wanted. It was his claim that he was only attempting to show Facebook that its system was insecure, as he had done in the past with Yahoo. The court was having none of it, ruling that his actions were malicious in nature.

No data was taken in the attacks, and Facebook has since sealed the hole that Mangham exploited. What's your take on this? Was Mangham a helpful hacker, or a cyber-thug out for himself?

Court Overturns Conviction of Programmer on Appeal

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 02:17 PM PST

codeA federal appeals court has overturned the 2010 conviction of former Goldman Sachs programmer Sergey Aleynikov, ordering the trial court to enter a judgement of acquittal. Aleynikov was previously convicted under the Economic Espionage Act of stealing source code from projects he had worked on at Goldman Sachs. It seems technology outstripped the law once again in this case.

The issue in the case was the wording of the 15 year-old Economic Espionage Act, which demands harsh penalties for anyone that steals a "product produced for interstate commerce." Mr. Aleynikov worked on building high-volume trading platforms for Goldman Sachs, which were never used for public commerce. Aleynikov uploaded source code from his system to an off-shore server prior to leaving Goldman for another, higher-paying job. He was arrested in short order.

The government held up the prosecution of Aleynikov as proof that it was fighting the war against high-tech crime. As the judgement today proves, the feds just don't have the criminal statutes to deal with today's complicated business technology. If Aleynikov had been tried under different, less severe statutes, the conviction might have stuck.

Open Linux-Based Spark Tablet Now Available For Preorder

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 10:59 AM PST

Getting sick of walled gardens, locked bootloaders and over-managed app stores? (We're looking at you, Amazon.) We've got some good news. A few weeks back we shined a spotlight on the Spark tablet, a Linux-based open source tablet being cobbled together by KDE developer Aaron Seigo.  Yesterday, it went up for preorder. Time to whip out those credit cards, Linux lovers! Oh, wait, never mind -- the site doesn't force you to whip out the plastic to land a spot in line for a Spark.

That's probably because the final price point for the tablet hasn't officially been set yet, although Seigo is striving for a €200 (roughly $260) sticker cost. A quick refresher on the Spark tablet: it packs in a 1GHz ARM processor with a Mali-400 GPU, 512 MB of memory, a 4GB hard drive (expandable via SD card slot) and an 800x480 7-inch display. The tablet runs on Mer Linux -- a fork of MeeGo -- with the KDE Plasma Active UI. Check out the "Hardware" tab of the MakePlayLive.com website for a full set of specs.

MakePlayLive is also the place to call dibs on a Spark tablet of your own. Aaron Seigo expects the Spark to start shipping in May; he's been pretty active about keeping the community up-to-date on Spark information on his blog. Keep checking in over there if you're intrigued by the project.

AMD Reportedly Prepping 3 New Bulldozer CPUs

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 10:30 AM PST

Few things set geeky hearts a-flutter more than the release of new CPUs. Valentine's Day may be a few days gone, but a leaked slide shows that AMD may try to woo system builders with the release of three new Bulldozer processors by the end of the next financial quarter.

The slide comes courtesy of the Turkish website DonanimHaber, and as you can see, each of the planned FX CPUs have a few things in common -- namely, a 95W TDP and a 4.1 GHz Turbo clock rate. No many how many cores you like, it looks like AMD will have you covered: the 3.9 GHz FX-4150 rocks 4 cores and a 12MB cache, while the 3.5GHz FX-6120 sports six cores and a 14MB cache. The cream of the crop (assuming the slide is legit) is the octa-core AMD FX-8140, which boasts a 3.2GHz base clock speed and a 16MB cache.

Pricing? Release dates? Who knows? It's a leaked slide. That being said, do any of these chips get you drooling?

Nvidia Struggling With Poor 28nm Yields

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 10:07 AM PST

AMD's already released high-end and low-end versions of its new Radeon 7000 lineup, but we've barely heard anything about Nvidia's upcoming Kepler GPUs. When will the first 6xx products launch? Heck, what season will Kepler launch in? Your guess is as good as ours. (At least there are spec rumors floating around.) We know one thing for certain, however; the yields of the 28nm wafers used to make Kepler GPUs have been horrible, and it's going to cost Nvidia big in the upcoming months.

"We are ramping our Kepler generation very hard, and we could use more wafers. The gross margin decline is contributed almost entirely to the yields of 28nm being lower than expected," Xbit Labs reports Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang as saying during a conference call. "That is, I guess, unsurprising at this point." Arg, hopefully we're not going to see the ghost of delayed Fermi architectures past.

Low yields aren't the only thing dropping Nvidia's gross margins, though; Huang says the ongoing fallout from Thailand's floods are also hammering the company.

On the bright side, Huang told analysts that Kepler "…is probably the best GPU we have ever built and the performance and power efficiency is surely the best that we have ever created." And once Kepler GPUs do start hitting the shelves, expect them to do so in droves; Huang said that the company has signed contracts to provide Nvidia 6xx GPUs to "virtually every single PC OEM in the world."

Civilization V Expansion to Add Gods, Kings, Possibly God Kings

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 10:03 AM PST

Firaxis may have forced the world to do a collective spit-take when it took up the reins on a new strategy-focused XCOM, but that doesn't mean Civilization's been overrun by aliens – figuratively speaking. (That is, however, precisely what it means in the literal sense.) The god king of historical turn-based tactics recently announced Civilization V: Gods and Kings, which will focus on religion and espionage, as well as a smattering of other goodies.

Foremost among the new features is "fully customizable" religion, which uses a "Faith" resource en route to world domination – or, if you're us, making people kneel before the holy trifecta that is Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry. Also on the docket: upgraded combat, religious and mercanitle city-states, and three new scenarios, one of which will take place in "a Victorian science-fiction setting." Steampunk Civ? And here we thought Firaxis would never reply to our politely worded ransom letters.

New spy units, meanwhile, will be capable of "establishing embassies with your rival civilizations, surveying foreign cities, stealing advanced techs, and garnering influence with city-states," among other things – which presumably include dressing snazzily and having a plan to either kill or sleep with everyone in a room.

It all totals out to 27 new units, 13 new buildings, 9 new wonders, and 9 new civilizations, with a release right around the chronological corner in "late spring."

AMD Catalyst 12.2 Pre-Certified Driver Rolls into View

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 08:23 AM PST

If you want to get a jump start on upgrading the drivers for your AMD Radeon videocard, you can head over to AMD and grab the Catalyst 12.2 pre-certified drivers today. AMD says these drivers are identical to the upcoming certified release, just without Microsoft's official blessing, which will come later this month or in early March. In other words, this isn't beta code, the drivers just haven't gone through the certification process yet.

In any event, Catalyst 12.2 adds support for Radon HD 7900 and 7700 Series graphics cards in Windows 7 and Vista. The new drivers also add super sampling anti-aliasing and adaptive anti-aliasing through the AMD Catalyst Control Center for DirectX 10 and 11 applications, as well as bring about several enhancements to AMD's Eyefinity 2.1 technology.

You can read the release notes here and grab the new drivers here.

Samsung Tries to Score Style Points by Adding Bling to Memory Cards

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 08:07 AM PST

Samsung's new line of SD and microSD memory cards look so good it's a shame they'll spend most of their time hiding inside your digital camera or other portable device. Regardless of the fact that memory cards are destined to spend most of their days out of sight, Samsung decided to add a bit of bling to seven new models of SD and microSD cards as part of either its High Speed Series or Plus Extreme Speed Series.

The redesigned cards make a fashion statement with a brushed metal design. They're also rugged and have been designed to be waterproof, shockproof, and magnet proof. According to Samsung, each model is able to survive up to 24 hours in water, withstand the force of a 1.6 ton vehicle, and resist up to 10,000 gauss.

Samsung's High Speed Series SD and microSD cards range in capacity from 2GB to 32GB and offer read and write speeds of up to 24MB/s and 13MB/s, respectively, depending on the model. The Plus Extreme cards are available in 8GB and 16GB capacities, all of which boast up to 24MB/s read and up to 21MB/s write speeds.

This week's hottest reviews on TechRadar

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 08:06 AM PST

iBook author

This week we've reviewed Apple's new iBooks creation app for the Mac as well as a cracking pair of cameras and a cracking pair of graphics cards to boot.

There's also a great phone for the US, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx which takes the existing Razr and adds a huge battery.

Here's our full list of this week's reviews from the site.

Apple iBooks Author

Amazon's Kindle, Barnes and Noble's Nook, and even Apple's iBooks have been working on moving us away from reading physical books and embracing the digital revolution. But until now, there was very little to convince us how good an idea this could be, since the digital versions looked very much like their real-world counterparts, right down to the page turning effect.

But this is what Apple is trying to change with its new content creation app, iBooks Author. Its aim is to revolutionise modern textbooks by bringing interactivity to the learning experience.

Fuji X-S1

Always liked the idea of an all-in-one camera with a massive zoom capability, but hated the often all too-plastic feel? Fuji's X-S1 may, nay will, cause you to re-evaluate the humble bridge camera. Whereas Fuji has previously applied an 'X' - its signifier of a premium camera

- to the Leica-like FinePix X10, for the first time it gives a superzoom that same distinction.

This means that the new 26x optical zoom Fuji X-S1 figuratively sits above the existing Fuji HS20 and HS30 models, even though the latter boast 30x zoom (maximum 720mm equivalent telephoto setting in 35mm terms).

AMD Radeon HD7770

AMD showed its hand first in this year's GPU arms race with Nvidia by turning it into last year's arms race. While Nvidia has kept shtum about its upcoming new 'Kepler' architecture and looks to do so until spring, AMD stole the march and released the first of its new 7-series cards, the AMD HD 7970, a few days before Christmas 2011.

That sure was odd timing, but it taught us a lot about AMD's new Southern Islands architecture, specifically the 'Tahiti' chip. The HD 7970's whopping £440 price made all those neat features all but irrelevant to the gaming masses though, so we're putting our hopes on this HD 7770 to deliver the best bits of the new AMD architecture for a more palatable price.

Canon G1 X

The new Canon PowerShot G1 X - commonly shortened to Canon G1 X, or even Canon G1X - occupies the top spot in Canon's prestigious G-series compact camera range, offering a truly impressive array of high-end features.

Launched at CES earlier this year, the new digital camera is aimed at advanced photographers in search of a high-quality, take-anywhere primary camera and/or backup for their DSLR. It may not be the compact system camera (CSC) that everyone was expecting to see from Canon, nor is it a direct replacement for the highly popular Canon PowerShot G12 - rather, it's something in between.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is the newest Razr to be released on the Verizon network. It takes everything you love about the Droid Razr, and fattens it up a bit with a whopping 3,300 mAh battery. That's a battery that's capable of 21 hours of talk time on a single charge.

And while we're excited to finally disconnect from that required midday charge, the true power of a battery that size comes in the form of 7 hours of LTE browsing per charge.

Lime Odyssey Dev Blog #3

It's Turga Time!

INTRODUCTION VIDEO!

The Turga in Lime Odyssey live in a meadow in the north of the continent and have a distinct lion-like appearance. Simple and honest as they are, with deep faith and brute strength they intend to be born again as a supreme ruler of the meadow. Since ancient times the savage Turgas ruled the Tumbara Plain and have lived their lives in battle. From childhood, little Turga mimicked the battle games of the adults with wooden weapons – their uncomplicated lives centered on discipline, honor, and willpower.

“Spirit Solace” Cleric Spell Effect

Competing to claim the Turga's homeland, the Keigers have instigated vicious wars and caused the loss of countless Turga fighters, much of their honor and most of their land. During the third war, the Turgas mustered a final, heroic charge and managed to reclaim their capital, Karakunta, but at a great cost. When rumors of Lime began spreading, many saw opportunity in capturing this all-powerful fruit for their own means, to help reclaim the West Tumbara Plains.

Today, the Turga begin their journey in the West Tumbara Plain of North Orta. Home to the Turga's primary trading hub of Karakunta, these barrenness plains are not for the weak of heart. Buried in the lofty mountains of this town lies Talunvara Canyon, crawling with Keigers. Don't be fooled by the fact that this is the first dungeon accessible to all players, my first five attempts were quite unsuccessful.

Final Boss of Talunvara Canyon

These friendly giants are currently my favorite race to play in Lime Odyssey. Standing considerably taller than both Muris and Human, you really feel like a savage warrior fighting your way to uncover the lime. Not to mention, the Turga's have some of the best dance moves and emotes in the game /Boogie!

MMObility: Let's make a mobile game, part three

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

Worgolt title
Last week we continued our discussion about how to make a mobile game, and the Massively readers offered up some great input. I wish I had the space to write up every single comment, but instead I will pick some of my favorites and we can discuss it from there. Unfortunately, real life has pushed development on the game back just a bit. Dave Toulouse, my indie developer partner-in-crime in this series, not only has two games of his own to run, Star Corsairs and Golemizer, but is now dealing with my silly emails. So while last week's column got some great ideas in the comments section, we were really only able to switch out the artwork, name the game, and add a tad bit of lore.

Fear not, fair readers! I will break down the development that is still planned on being pushed into the game over the last week, and it's important to note that Dave and I plan on coming back to the experiment over time. I'd like to update the game and continue discussion since it has been so interesting so far! In the meanwhile, click here to go to the official game page!

CCP revisiting EVE's new player experience

      Posted: 17 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

EVE Online is hard, or so goes the conventional wisdom. CCP's sci-fi sandbox has seen a lot of players roll up a spaceship avatar since 2003, and it's also seen quite a few of those players quit on account of the considerable learning curve.

A new dev blog by CCP Legion outlines a broad-stroke plan to mitigate these difficulties, and Legion says that "we want to give the players a chance to experience the coolness of EVE even in the beginning and make them understand all the potential within the game. In short, we want to make the first days, weeks and months in EVE enjoyable and not just something you have to plow through in order to get to the good stuff."

How is CCP going to do that without dumbing it down? That's still up in the air, but Legion says that the changes will focus more on teachable mechanics than step-by-step guides.

In other New Eden news, CCP has released a new video called The Awakening, and it presents the first moments of a new pod pilot as he is born into his new life. View it in full after the break.

Welcome to a special interview edition of The Firing Line, folks. True MMOFPS titles are few and far between these days, though 2012 is shaping up to be a banner year for the genre thanks to games like PlanetSide 2, DUST 514, and possibly even Firefall. There's another massive FPS on its way, too, and even though it hasn't had quite as much press coverage as the aforementioned titles, 3000AD's Line of Defense project is worth a look.

Join me after the break for a conversation with lead designer Derek Smart as he talks about what makes the game massive as well as what sets it apart from its competitors.

Fallen Earth - mutt following a chopper
I've played more MMOs than I can remember over the years, and nearly all of them have failed to capture my long-term interest. Most of the games in my also-ran box got a first look because of some quirky feature. Most of them didn't get a second look because -- aside from said feature -- they sucked.

Every once in a while I'll regret leaving an MMO, though, and none moreso than Fallen Earth. Though I played extensively at launch and for a month or so after, I inexplicably forsook the wastelands for the world of Atreia. Upon returning to the game a few weeks ago and reconnecting with some old friends, I had to stop and take a moment to wonder what the heck I was thinking back in 2009. What about you, Massively crew? Have you had any similar head-scratching moments after rediscovering a previous title, and do you regret leaving it?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

This week on The MMO Report, Casey delivers a Valentine's Day rant before moving on to the latest news -- namely, The Secret World's release date rumors, Wakfu's PvP, and the sunset of sci-fi sandbox Earthrise. He also rounds up the latest Blizzard headlines, noting the lawsuit against Valve, World of Warcraft's recent sub losses, and the "valiant and pointless exercise" of rebuilding Azeroth in Minecraft.

Finally, Uncle Casey's Mailbag provides a forum for the debate over just how we're supposed to pronounce "SWTOR." All this and more in the video behind the break!

          The Summoner's Guidebook: I suck at last-hitting

Given all of the fansites dedicated to League of Legends, you might wonder what kind of content I have planned for The Summoner's Guidebook to set it apart. Fortunately, there are quite a few little niches to cover.

Our focus with the column will be on the beginner to intermediate players and improving key elements of lower-level play. While I do recognize and admire the pro League scene, websites like SoloMid.net and Curse Gaming's new LoLPro.com have tons of advice to push your gameplay from the expert levels of play to the master and professional levels.

This week, we're going to start with the basics of laning well. While there are dozens of guides on how to do this, I want to cover them in the Guidebook because their importance can't be stressed enough. Laning fundamentals are something you should practice in every game, even as you learn new strategies or tactics. If you can commit yourself to constantly improving in this area, you'll see dramatic leaps in your ability to play. These tricks are the hardest skills in the game to improve on, so getting better at them gives you a significant edge over most opponents. If you want to take the first steps to improve your LoL game, you'll have to read on.

Darkness falls on Forsaken World in latest expansion

            Forsaken World: Nightfall logo
Y'all better prepare your night-vision goggles because night is swiftly approaching Perfect World Entertainment's free-to-play title Forsaken World, and it's all thanks to the game's upcoming expansion, Nightfall. The recently announced update will take players to the far reaches of Eyrda with new quests, shinier shinies, and -- perhaps most interestingly -- the gift of flight. That's right, when Nightfall hits the live servers, players will be able to soar through the skies to experience "new bosses, dungeons, and events designed specifically for flying."

But maybe you've got more of a PvP bent to your playstyle. Don't worry; PWE is on the case. Forsaken World's Immortal Rift, which previously played host to massive guild wars, is being repurposed as "an all-out land conquering system," which will pit guild against guild against guild in a knock-down-drag-out brawl for territorial dominance. But that's enough chatter from us, so how about you click on past the cut for the expansion's teaser trailer, then head on over to Forsaken World's official site to get in on the fun.

Lord of the Rings Online offering PvMP players some Commendation

Nothing personal, bro. I just need to upgrade my mandibles.
Lord of the Rings Online has always had an interesting system of PvP, with players facing off against a specially designated group of players in the guise of monsters. It's also a system that's historically had some problems, ones that the developers are hoping to alleviate the new Commendation system coming with Update 6. While it won't fix everything, the new system outlined in today's developer diary should ensure that players will be able to focus their PvMP efforts toward PvMP rewards, making rewards more straightforward without forcing players into PvE to advance.

The diary explains how Destiny, the previously intended PvMP currency, wound up being bloated and failed to serve its proper purpose. Commendations will be hard-capped at 100,000, and spending this currency will allow players to advance Creeps and acquire new equipment. The preliminary numbers are also included with the diary, with the understanding that there will be some tweaking after the system goes live. While players might be a bit miffed at having to use their Destiny quickly before it goes away, the new reward system will hopefully make advancing via PvMP far more viable.

            GamersFirst sees a management shakeup

            Not pictured: management.
GamersFirst is in the minds of gamers for its successful relaunch of APB: Reloaded, which went from a lightning-fast shutdown to a successful free-to-play title. The company is also developing new games based on original IPs for future release. But there's some rumbling going on behind the scenes at the company, as the company's parent corporation, K2 Network, saw the resignation of its CEO, Joshua Hong. Bjorn Book-Larsson, former COO and CTO, has been promoted to the CEO position, with Hong's future uncertain.

The official statements claim that the transition of power was amicable and pre-arranged, but it also comes on the heels of worldwide layoffs from K2 and rumors of a power struggle behind the scenes. Rahul Sandil, the company's public relations chief, claimed that there was no truth to these rumors and that the plan was to move forward from simple localizations of titles developed in foreign markets. Sandil went on to confirm that APB: Reloaded continues to be a large-scale success for the company and that further development will be centered around work that Book-Larsson had already seen during his time as CTO and COO.

            G.I.R.L.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your essay-writing engines! Sony Online Entertainment is sounding the call for this year's G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition and is now accepting applicants looking to win a $10,000 scholarship and a 10-week internship at SOE.

The program, which is in its fifth year, is designed to promote and inspire female involvement in video game development by helping a talented student through undergraduate studies. Applicants have to currently be enrolled in a gaming-related program, have a 3.0 or higher GPA, be a resident of the US, and be 18 years old or older. If you meet all those standards and have a hankering to apply, you'll need to submit two pieces of original concept art "inspired by" PlanetSide 2 or EverQuest II, captions to go with the art, and a 500-word essay about women in the gaming industry. Applications are due by March 29th.

SOE Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing Laura Naviaux hopes that this will be the biggest year ever for the scholarship: "Over the last few years, we have been nothing short of impressed with the hundreds of amazing submissions from talented students nationwide. Now in our fifth year, we can't wait to see the creativity that comes out of the G.I.R.L. program."

            Cyclops joins Marvel Heroes' roster

            Marvel Heroes
Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, will be leaping off the comic book pages and into MMOs when Marvel Heroes eventually comes out. Until then, we'll have to content ourselves with scoping out his chiseled, spandex'd body and secretly wishing that we had his death ray eyes the next time we get stuck behind some jerk in traffic.

Gazillion is happy to announce that Cyclops will be a playable character in Marvel Heroes. What he lacks in overall charisma and flying abilities, he makes up for with a facial cannon capable of ruining your day. Cyclops is the on-again, off-again leader of the X-Men, a group of heroes that is also confirmed to be a part of the game.

You can check out a larger picture of Cyclops along with all the other revealed playable characters in Marvel Heroes in our new gallery below!

Then it might just be an MMO! Indie gaming fans out there are probably already familiar with thatgamecompany, creators of hit PSN titles such as Flower, flOw, and the to-be-released Journey. Journey is going to be the studio's first experience with online interaction between players, but a new job listing from the studio seeking a scalability engineer states that the studio would "like to take it a step further with [its] next game." Taking online interaction a step further, you say? Why, they could be talking about an MMO!

The job listing further corroborates this theory as it continues on to state that "while [thatgamecompany is] pretty experienced making games, [the studio has] never built a full scale online service available to hundreds of thousands of users." Hundreds of thousands of users, you say? Why, that sounds even more like an MMO! Of course, this is all pure conjecture at this point, but surely we're not alone in our belief that an MMO from the minds of the folks that brought us Flower and flOw would be pretty groovy. But the fact remains that Journey won't even be released until next month, so this next project -- whatever it may be -- is still far off the horizon, but stay tuned. Hopefully we'll know more about this new project before too long.

RIFT players set record for most in-game weddings in one day

It wasn't but yesterday that we ran our feature on the gaming achievements of the Guinness Book of World Records: Gamer's Edition 2012, but between then and now, a new MMO-related record has been set. As many of you know, RIFT recently added marriage to its plethora of features, allowing players to make the ultimate commitment in Telara. Well, the ultimate commitment besides joining a raiding guild, at any rate.

A press release today announced that RIFT players banded together with the goal of setting the record for the most in-game marriages in a 24-hour span. We're not certain what the previous record was if there was one at all, but RIFT players managed to set the bar with a staggering 21,879 marriages performed between noon on February 14th and noon on February 15th. RIFT executive producer and Trion Worlds CCO Scott Hartsman is pleased with the outcome, stating in the press release that "Ascended Weddings were a great way to lift the veil on RIFT's new 'Gatherings' feature, social experiences that bring players together in new and interesting ways." He goes on to add that "[the studio] looks forward to expanding this great new gameplay element in the always-evolving world of Telara." So congratulations to all of the lucky couples. Enjoy your new ball-and-chain!

The Guild Counsel: How to break into raiding

              SWTOR Hoth
One question every guild needs to answer at some point is, "Will we be a raiding guild?" Many guilds answer that question with a loud "yes" even before they set foot in game, but for other guilds, it's something that bubbles up as members reach the level cap and raid content is within reach. Raiding tends to get a bad rap, but that's not surprising when you remember that raid videos are usually filled with yelling, swearing, finger pointing, and heavy metal music. It looks about as relaxing as boot camp in the winter.

But it is possible to go from casual to raiding and still maintain a casual, low-key tone. In fact, it's even easier now to do that in many MMOs. In this week's Guild Counsel, we'll look at why we've entered a golden age of raiding, and we'll cover a few handy tips for guilds looking to make the leap.

In our humble opinion, you can never have enough post-apocalyptic video games, and that's why we're pretty excited to see more of L.A.W (Living After War). Sure there's Fallout, Wasteland, and when it comes to MMOs, Fallen Earth, but the more the merrier.

Luckily for us (and you), L.A.W is gearing up for its first closed beta phase, and the title is available for download at its official website. You'll need a beta key to participate, of course, and if you don't have one yet, you'll need to sign up for an alaplaya account.

L.A.W is described by alaplaya as a PvP-centric MMOG with an RTS mode, and it "also features classic role-playing elements such as a guild system, dungeons, and extensive skill sets."
