Will Windows 10 Spur PC Replacement Demand?

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 07:59 AM PST

Windows 10 PCsPC vendors are not sure what to expect from Windows 10

Trying to predict the PC market is like to trying to forecast the weather a month in advance -- it's a crapshoot, basically. So, we're taking it with several grains of salt that PC vendors are reportedly doubtful that the Windows 10 launch next year will stimulate demand for replacement systems. One reason they feel that way is because of the lingering rumor that Microsoft may make Windows 10 a free update.

We haven't heard much on that front lately, but with Microsoft making such a big deal about the changes in Windows 10 and even skipping a number due to the massive overhaul, we'd be mildy surprised (not downright shocked) if Redmond doled it out as a free update to Windows 8.1.

Players within the Taiwan-based supply chain point out to Digitimes that brand vendors usually launch new notebook models to pair with a new OS release, though they don't know if that will be the case if Microsoft does indeed make Windows 10 a free update.

Market research firm Gartner is a bit more optimistic, or at least it was earlier in the year. Back in July, Gartner predicted that PC shipments could reach 317 million units in 2015, up from 308 million units expected to ship this year. The reason? A "revival" of the PC market due to business PC upgrades, especially as more companies replace their XP systems.

What effect do you think Windows 10 will have on PC sales? Sound off in the comments section below!

Temple Run VR is Now Available for Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 07:28 AM PST

Temple Run VREndless runner gets a dash virtual realism

Remember Temple Run, the addictive endless runner that stole hours of your time, as such games are apt to do? Well, there's a new version available, and we're not talking about yet another themed release. Developer Imangi Studios announced that Temple Run VR is finished and available to play on Samsung's recently released Gear VR Innovator Edition headset. It's one of the first fully playable games for the Gear VR and it's free to download.

Just like the non-VR version, you're an Indiana Jones wannabe who thieves an idol from what's apparently a cursed and very pissed off temple, which kicks off your endless escape across icy mountaintops in a first person perspective. Unfortunately for you, the ending is the same every time you play -- you die. However, how you die is at least changed up. Maybe you trip over a tree root and get caught by Arctic Demon Monkeys, or perhaps the baby's crying in the next room so you flick your character off a ledge when you should have made a hard left. Whatever, you'll end up playing it again anyway, not because the stolen idol belongs in a museum, but because we all turn into mindless zombies when playing these types of aggravatingly addictive titles (Flappy Bird, anyone?).

Samsung released its Gear VR Innovator Edition earlier this month for $200. Developed in partnership with Oculus VR, the headset is intended to make use of mobile devices as a source of power and content generation. It has a 96-degree Field of View and sports gyrometer, geomagnetic, proximity, and accelerator sensors.

To use the headset, you'll also need a Galaxy Note 4 device. It slides into the front and connects via micro USB.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Shadow of Revan - Final Thoughts

Shadow of Revan - Final Thoughts

On December 2nd, early purchasers of the Shadow of Revan expansion were granted access to two things: the new content that was being added for the $20 purchase of the expansion pack, and the new skills and streamlined combat systems. For people who have played SWTOR in the past and are just curious about the new discipline system, I'd recommend just logging in and trying it for yourself.

Year-End MMOG Hopes And Wishes

This being my final Free Zone column for 2014, my first inclination was to choose a topic in the looking back vein. When I started considering possibilities, I immediately dismissed the idea of doing something "me too" like best of awards, which the site does far more prominently than I could anyway. Instead, I decided to discuss a few ways I'd like to see the MMOG development and publishing industry change, however unlikely they may be.

A Chat with Hunted Cow

If you have a knack for some old-school dungeon and sandbox MMO fun, you really should check out Eldevin. With a recent launch of Steam, the game is better than ever. It's a mix between a sandbox, a linear questing game and interesting virtual world. The game features a top-down look that makes many comment about its similarity to the very popular RuneScape. In fact, people often refer to RuneScape when describing Eldevin, but I'm not so sure about the connection.

ArtCraft Aims to Fix Where MMOs Went Wrong

Yesterday's announcement of the formation of ArtCraft and a new game with new approach to MMORPG design should have people talking by now. We were lucky enough to go right to the source and spend some time with founders Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton talking about their philosophy on MMOs, their new project, and all that we have experienced over the last decade of online gaming.

"This is *not* the final form of combat." ~ Dave Georgeson

In a short, but meaningful, post on the Landmark forum, Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson acknowledges that the team should have better prepared players for combat in Landmark. Choosing, he says, to get input from the community releasing it in its early form without that preparation was a mistake.

Korean Closed Beta Preview

Pearl Abyss is a studio with something to prove. That's the feeling I get after spending a day beta testing the Korean version of Black Desert. The game has plenty of dull edges that need to be polished out, but the basic shape is already visible.
