MSI S100

'3-in-1' tablet packs an Intel Atom BayTrail-T quad-core processor

Taiwan-based MSI on Friday announced a new 10-inch Windows 8.1 tablet. The Bay Trail-powered S100, which first appeared at Computex 2014 in June, paid the obligatory pre-launch visit to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last month.

Inside the S100 you'll find a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Bay Trail-T Z3740D, 2GB memory and 64GB storage, WIFI 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, 2.0MP front camera, 2.0MP rear camera, Micro SD slot, miniHDMI and USB 2.0. The Windows 8.1-running tablet has a 10.1 inch IPS display (1280 x 800) with 10-point multitouch support.

Being touted as a "3-in-1" tablet by MSI, the S100 will ship with a keyboard and a protective cover, although we don't know when that will be as there's currently no word on a release date or pricing.

Upcoming Alienware 13 to be Dell’s Thinnest Gaming Laptop

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 05:16 PM PDT

Alienware 13

Will sport a QHD touchscreen IPS display

Alienware's M11x gaming laptop launched to mostly favorable reviews in 2010 (we gave it a stellar 9/10) and even managed to amass a small, cult-like following before it got phased out in 2012. Since then the company has ignored entreaties for the 11-inch notebook's revival, sticking with larger notebooks instead. That does not mean there is no room for a smaller and lighter laptop in Alienware's portfolio.

The Dell-owned brand is now readying a 13-inch gaming laptop. At 1 inch thick and 4.5 pounds, the upcoming laptop is going to both considerably thinner and lighter than the Alienware 14 (1.6" and 6.1lbs), the thinnest and lightest offering in the company's stable right now. Further, unlike its 14-inch brother, the 13 will be powered by ultra-low-voltage (ULV) processors from Intel and not standard mobile Core i chips. Other specs on the 13 will include up to 2560×1440 IPS touchscreen display, up to 16GB of RAM, two SSDs, Nvidia GeForce 860M GPU, 802.11ac Wireless and Klipsch audio.

According to Forbes contributor Jason Evangelho, who recently had the chance to talk to an Alienware representative about the 13, the upcoming laptop has been designed with "a 'full throttle' cooling system — it's an internal, copper, thermal solution designed to keep the hardware cool under heavy loads."

The Alienware 13 is scheduled to arrive on store shelves sometime during the holiday season. The exact release date and price are not known at this time.

Stick and Rudder: Should you be scared off by Star Citizen's community?

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Massively's Justin Olivetti and I were talking MMO communities recently. Star Citizen came up, and my esteemed colleague mentioned that the constant hubbub surrounding the crowdsourced space sim sandbox has made him a bit wary of getting invested in the title for the time being.

From the inside looking out, I can see how the game's community sometimes seems like a roiling mass of internet rage and entitlement, but I think it's worth mentioning that -- like the game itself -- it's also what you make of it.

One Shots: There's no bear in panda

    wow
As much fun as it is to be corrected by know-it-alls who like to huff things like, "You can't call them panda bears; they're not bears, you know!" it's even more fun to say, "Yuh-huh they're bears! And your face also has a ursine visage, especially around the snout."

I don't even know why I brought that up. It certainly has nothing to do with our opening screenshot from reader JohnD, who writes, "While starting off with my new Pandaren Monk in World of Warcraft, I came across these delightful Pandaren children, who seemed more than happy to just chat with me and occasionally wave. After a few minutes they quickly ran off -- but not before making my adventures a little more fun!"

But they're not bears. Or are they? Yes. No. I don't know.

The Daily Grind: What tabletop RPG mechanics should MMOs adopt?

      Posted: 10 Aug 2014 06:00 AM PDT

      Neverwinter
Massively reader Couillon recently wrote in to the Massively Speaking podcast to ask us about tabletop games and their influence on the MMO genre. He proposed that MMORPGs could benefit from a tabletop-inspired "roleplay bonus" for actually -- gasp -- roleplaying a character. "I realize this might require more thought during character creation than most players are willing to spend," Couillon wrote dryly, but I think it's a topic worth considering as MMOs are looking for ways to redefine themselves in a post-WoW era.

Justin and I discussed several P&P RPG systems that we'd love to see more widely implemented in our favorite MMOs, like advantage/disadvantage mechanics and non-combat skills like persuasion and knowledge. What do you folks think? What classic or creative features from tabletop games should MMOs adopt?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

        Make My MMO: August 3 - August 9, 2014

Well, Games of Glory didn't last long on our crowdfunding list. Soon after I added it last week, Lightbulb Crew sent out a PR blast saying that it was canceling its Kickstarter drive on account of additional funding that it managed to secure from its existing investors.

We also say goodbye to Bone Gulch for now, as the indie wild west sandbox failed to reach its Kickstarter goal. The Stomping Land and Ever, Jane also made headlines this week. The former is moving engines from Unreal 3 to 4, while the latter surfaced with a new build that includes endgame sleuthing and gossip systems.

Finally, Star Citizen continued to roll around in piles of money, and oh yeah, it also squashed those troublesome rubberbanding bugs, opened up Arena Commander to all of the game's backers, and added a new CTF mode. More MMO crowdfunding news is just past the break.

Order and Chaos Online goes free-to-play

            order and chaos online
The hit mobile MMO Order and Chaos Online has gone from reducing its up-front client cost to eliminating it completely.

This past week, Gameloft dropped the price for Order and Chaos Online, making it officially free-to-play and gifting existing players 150 rune stones and a shining golden dragon hatchling for their financial support. The game originally launched as a subscription model, transitioned into a buy-to-play title for $6.99 back in 2012, and now will have to lean on in-game shop purchases to rake in revenue.

Order and Chaos Online is celebrating its third anniversary with in-game gifts and quests. The MMO recently added a new PvP mode, Battlefield, that allows players to duke it out in 2v2 and 4v4 matches.

Star Citizen's Arena Commander gets new CTF mode

            Posted: 09 Aug 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Cloud Imperium has added a new game mode to Star Citizen's Arena Commander dogfighting module. Capture the Core is a team-based mode that sees players tasked with -- you guessed it -- capping the core on the opposite side of the map. If that sounds a bit like classic capture-the-flag games, that's by design, though CIG's announcement post points out that there's an "additional challenge of operating in three dimensional space."

The new mode is now available to all Arena Commander-eligible backers.
