Lenovo-IBM Server Deal Gets Regulatory Approval in China

IBM BladeCenter

Now all eyes on the U.S. government

Chinese PC vendor Lenovo's $2.3 billion acquisition of IBM's low-end server business has won the approval of Chinese Ministry of Commerce's anti-monopoly bureau, according to news agency Reuters. However, this is only half the battle. Announced in January this year, the deal now requires the approval of regulators in the States — something that could prove a bit tricky against the backdrop of the ongoing U.S.-China cyber standoff.

For the deal to go through, Lenovo will have to convince the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS)  that it won't allow the acquisition (it's second largest till date) to be used by the Chinese to compromise the security of IBM's many high-profile clients, which include the likes of the Pentagon and the FBI.

The company, meanwhile, is confident of both this $2.3 billion deal with IBM and the $2.91 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility going through before the end of 2015.

"I don't think (the cyber-theft case) will impact Lenovo's business," Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing recently told Reuters. "For a long time we've operated not just in China but also in the U.S. and other global markets. We have always been a transparent company, a trusted company, we've never had any issue with the government."

Report: Pre-Release Testing of Office for Android Tablets to Commence Soon

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 10:56 PM PDT

Office for Android Tablets

Microsoft is on the lookout for private beta testers

The lack of tablet-optimized apps has for long been a major source of frustration among Android tablet owners. What's worse, even Android's emergence as the overwhelming leader in the tablet market has done little to alleviate this shortcoming, with even some big-name developers refusing to offer tablet-optimized versions of their apps for the platform. Well, Microsoft is willing to help.

The Redmond-based software company, which earlier this year released a dedicated version of its highly lucrative Office productivity suite for the Apple iPad, is currently busy building a dedicated version of Office for Android tablets. According to The Verge, the company is now on the lookout for private beta testers to put Office for Android tablets through its paces. Interested companies and individuals can apprise Microsoft of their interest in joining the program through the company's SharePoint site.

If recent reports are to be believed, Office for Android tablets could end up releasing ahead of a similar touch-friendly version for Windows, which is expected to release sometime during early 2014.

HummingBoard All Set to Give Raspberry Pi a ‘Solid Run’ for its Money

Posted: 06 Jul 2014 10:46 PM PDT

HummingBoard

New single-board computer from Israeli company to begin shipping later this month

Israel-based Solid Run is now taking orders for a single-board computer that is reportedly capable of fitting into any third-party case designed for the hugely popular Raspberry Pi. Looks and size aside, the HummingBoard, as the diminutive PC is called, is much more powerful than its storied rival.

With three variants priced $45, $75 and $100, respectively (power adapter and 4GB Micro SD sold separately), the HummingBoard is more expensive than the Pi, which is available in $25 and $35 versions.

Featuring a single-core 1GHz ARMv7 SoC and 512MB RAM, the most basic version, the HummingBoard-i1, is not only more powerful than the Pi, which only has a 700MHz ARMv6 chip, but is also capable of running a wider choice of operating systems. The other two SKUs pack dual-core chips and double the memory.

"The HummingBoard allows you to run many open source operating systems – such as Ubuntu, Debian and Arch – as well as Android and XBMC," reads the official HummingBoard product page.

"With its core technology based on SolidRun's state-of-the-art Micro System on a Module (MicroSOM), it has ready-to-use OS images, and its open hardware comes with full schematics and layout. Best of all, as a Linux single board computer, the HummingBoard is backed by the global digital maker community, which means you can alter the product in any way you like and get full kernel upstreaming support and all the assistance you need."

The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV's 2.3 primer

Chant the ancient prayer, children - it can't be as bad as the last one.
Tomorrow, patch 2.3 will descend upon Final Fantasy XIV like a flight of angels. If you can't tell, I'm pretty excited. While I was by and large disappointed with 2.2, 2.3 is adding a lot of features I want, undoing some of the dumb features added in 2.2, and adding in a few more features that I didn't realize I wanted before but now know are immensely important to me. Kind of like the Challenge Log, except more.

Unfortunately, the fact that it's landing tomorrow as of the time you're reading this means I have not yet actually played this patch. But I can still put a guide of some preliminaries together so that you can at least know what you're doing even if you haven't necessarily examined the patch notes with a fine-toothed comb just yet. So let's dive into it. When the patch goes live tomorrow, pick your destination, and go to it.

RuneScape naming system opens up to more frequent changes

    RuneScape
RuneScape is tweaking the way character names work, and players will now have the opportunity to change names more often. There's also a revised system for inactive character names to expire.

Through the use of a bond, characters can now change their names as many times as they'd like without waiting a month as was required previously. Character names will also expire for inactive accounts that haven't logged in for two years or more as well as those accounts that have never become a member and haven't logged in for six months. These expired names are up for grabs, but their original owners will be notified via email before losing the name. If you haven't played in a while, simply log in within the next seven days to keep your name.

City of Titans shows off engine progress for July 4th

    Posted: 07 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Easier to look at than to actually do.
Everyone celebrates the 4th of July in different ways. City of Titans celebrated with fireworks. That might not seem like much until you watch the video and understand that it's the first video wherein every single shot is focused on things that the design team made. The fireworks, the physics effects governing them, most of the buildings -- all designed by the team at Missing Worlds Media.

Previous videos of the game have relied heavily upon off-the-shelf assets and resources that other people had made, but this video is a look at a landscape moving from "designed by others" to "designed just for this game." Obviously there's a long way to go, but if you're looking forward to seeing what the team at Missing Worlds Media can do in the future, this is a good place to start.

[Thanks to Byron for the tip!]

I managed to finish another couple of class stories thanks to Star Wars: The Old Republic's double XP week. Though the game has been out for nearly three years, getting through all eight arcs is taking a while since I dabble in so many other MMOs.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, though, and I think that even without another double XP event, I'll finally be finished before the end of the year. What about you, Massively readers? Are there any long-term MMO goals you plan to complete in 2014?

EVE Evolved: Making ISK from the Crius release

        EVE Evolved title image
EVE Online's economy has been studied over the years for its resemblance to the real world, and it is often cited as an example of a hyper-capitalist society with no laws or regulation. But underneath the emergent interplay of supply and demand that has fueled everything from freighter businesses to virtual investment banks, EVE is ultimately a game. The biggest influence on the markets by far has always been CCP Games and the changes it deploys in expansions, which shake the universe up and force players to adapt to new circumstances.

There's always money to be made from major gameplay changes, and accurately predicting how an expansion will impact on the market can put you on the head of a short-lived but very lucrative gold rush. Though EVE's updates now come in the form of ten smaller releases per year, the upcoming Crius release scheduled for July 22nd has practically a whole expansion's worth of changes to industry and research. That gives you just over two weeks to prepare for the change, train any skills you might need, and figure out how to cash in on EVE's industrial revolution.

In this edition of EVE Evolved, I run down some tips for how to prepare for the upcoming industry revamp in Crius and make some ISK.

Skyforge abandons leveling in favor of a prestige system

          skyforge
The Skyforge development team has been on a streak of answering pressing community questions over on the game's Facebook page, with one question answered per day over the previous week.

A few of the questions centered around how Skyforge has eschewed a traditional leveling format in favor of a "prestige" system. Prestige is like gearscore, a sum total of the stats from a player's equipment. As a player gains more prestige, more content, gear, and followers are unlocked. "Instances are tied to the amount of prestige your character has," the team explained. "The better your character[s are] developed, the higher their prestige is and the more adventures they can go on."

Other questions concerned whether there will be a test server (there will be) or a global chat channel (there won't be). The team did indicate that there would be a multi-platform chat system on launch, however: "Our programmers wrote a special chat service that will allow players in the game to chat to friends that are reading messages from other devices. This means that you can chat with other players regardless of whether they are in the game or not."

[Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]

This has all changed this week, as Aura Kingdom passed the Steam Greenlight process and has become available through the platform.

Aeria Games CEO Pascal Zuta hopes that this will give the anime MMO a good boost: "Having a game launch on Steam is a sign of trust in the quality of the game and the service we provide.
