Asus Announces ROG G550JK-DS71 Gaming Notebook

Posted: 29 Jun 2014 04:47 PM PDT

Asus ROG G550JK Gaming Laptop

Available for pre-order now

Taiwanese PC maker Asustek recently introduced a new gaming laptop under its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand. The ROG G550JK-DS71 is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GPU that can be overclocked (up to 5 percent) on the fly using the company's TurboMaster technology, Asus said in a press release Thursday.

Available for pre-order now from the likes of Amazon, B&H, Newegg and TigerDirect, the $1,099 G550JK-DS71 packs a 15.6-inch full HD LED-backlit IPS display, Intel Core i7 4710HQ processor (2.5-3.5GHz), 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM,  GeForce GTX 850M with 2GB DDR3 VRAM, 750GB HDD (7,200 rpm), DVD Super-Multi optical disc drive and HD webcam. It measures 15.1 x 10.0 x 1.1 inches and weighs 6 pounds.

For what it's worth, ten of these G550JK notebooks were part of a recent world record attempt for the "highest elevation LAN party." Here are the details, as reported in the press release: "HighLANder, an event hosted by Linus Media Group and Tek Syndicate on June 23rd, 2014 in Leadville Colorado, used the ROG G550JK gaming notebook to scale Mt. Elbert, the highest peak of the Rocky Mountains at 14,440 ft., followed by wirelessly connecting via an ASUS RT-AC68U router at the summit in order to set a world record for highest elevation LAN party. The elevation was certified by expert witness Elizabeth Thompson, a PHD student in Atmospheric Meteorology, and has been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for review and certification."

Stick and Rudder: How complex is too complex for Star Citizen?

Posted: 29 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

I've taken a little while to let Chris Roberts' recent flight model manifesto marinate. In that time, my opinion has run the gamut from "funk yeah, simulation!" to "hmm, I hope I'm able to enjoy this title" and back again.

I waffled because as much as I'm salivating over Star Citizen and everything it represents, it's still one game out of dozens that I'm following. And as much as I'd like to, I can't realistically devote all of my free time to a single title!

One Shots: Regrets, I've had a few

Staring at a sunset is a perfectly legitimate time to look back at one's day (and one's life) to muse upon victories won and defeats suffered. The regrets are then cast upon the sinking sun to be taken into the void of yesterday. Tomorrow? Tomorrow is a clean slate of possibilities.

Reader Dynatos submitted this warm and fuzzy Final Fantasy XIV picture. "Here's another sunset, this time in Thanalan with my tanky Carbuncle. I kinda miss him after he was replaced."

Regrets? We've all had a few. And if you don't read the rest of this column, you will regret it. That's friendly advice, not a threat.

The Daily Grind: What are you doing in your pre-launch MMO?

So I'm in ArcheAge's alpha. Woo, I guess.

It's not that the game sucks. On the contrary it's pretty solid fun. But I'm treading carefully so as not to spoil it all for myself come release. See, this isn't beta, so none of the progression matters. From my perspective, the only reason to be here this early is to learn the systems and scope out some land for the inevitable launch-week land rush.

What about you, alpha and beta buyers? Whether it's ArcheAge, Landmark, or one of those Kickstarter MMOs that's starting to let people in, what exactly are you doing in your pre-launch game of choice? Are you actually testing or are you looking to get a leg up on launch newbs?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Want to name a weapon DUST 514? Log in and start killing, then. CCP is hosting a competition to name the new officer variants of everything from assault rifles to mass drivers to shotguns in its EVE shooter sidequel. From now through July 21st, players with the most kills on a single weekend using a base prototype weapon will get to pick that weapon's name and will also receive 30 copies of it.

Each weekend's score is tallied individually, CCP says. Full details are available at the DUST 514 website.

          Make My MMO: June 22 - June 28, 2014

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Star Citizen made more money. At this point I should probably go ahead and add that as a permanent part of Make My MMO's opening paragraph. Elsewhere, Pathfinder Online formally flung open its doors and invited backers into its alpha. If you supported the fantasy sandbox on Kickstarter or purchased access through the GoblinWorks store, you should be getting an email invite.

Finally, indie outfit Nesoi Tech revealed Bone Gulch, which is some sort of online multiplayer Old West thing built with the Unity engine. Though its Kickstarter page labels it an MMO, I'm not sure how MMO it really is, but I'm desperate enough for a Red Dead Redemption-style persistent world to be cautiously optimistic.

As always, the rest of our crowdfunded MMO roundup is just past the break.

H1Z1 working hard on Steam early access prep

            Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

SOE Technical Director Tom Schenck penned the first dev blog for H1Z1 yesterday, saying that the team is in overdrive preparing the title for its debut on Steam Early Access. However, in regard to a specific date as to when H1Z1 will be publicly available, Schenck wasn't sharing.

Schenck said that the team is strongly focusing on getting the antagonists to look and play the part: "High priority on our Early Access feature list is polishing group behavior and tuning Emergent AI systems to the entire ecosystem. Our AI team is going nuts regulating interactions for all of the NPC characters in the game including zombies, deer, wolves, and more."

Other stated priorities for the team right now include fine tuning melee combat, maxing out performance, and bug hunting.

General: Why We Need a Little Chaos

Why We Need a Little Chaos

With the World Cup going on, I've been thinking about events, big and small. Events can bring people together around any game, and it's no different when it comes to MMORPGs. Though in some of the more modern MMORPGs, sometimes it feels like things are a bit on autopilot. Everything is programmed in and left hands-off, and it makes me nostalgic for the days of active GM participants and the sometimes chaotic world of active live events in games.

              Ultimate Anime Summer!!!

As the self-described "most expressive MMORPG," Mabinogi's summer events demand three exclamation points. Maybe more. Their announcement did include the word "extravaganza" after all. This summer smorgasbord will happen in three two-week phases, during which players will enjoy beginner level benefits, new hair and facial customizations, black haired elves and free weekly rebirthing. (Ew.)

Games of Glory - Hands-on Preview

"When I grow up, I want to be a clone-handler." Isn't that what we all said as kids? Fine, I guess it's just me, but even if clone-handling played no part in your juvenile dreams, it could soon be a part of your grown-up ones. Last week, developer Lightbulb Crew invited a few members of the press to check out a very early version of its upcoming MOBA Games of Glory, and I must say, as far as hybrid genres go, it makes a good case.
