CES 2014: Expect Steam Machines, wearable computing, and more

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is undoubtedly the biggest tech convention in the word. Tons of gadgets and gizmos are revealed at the show every year and with CES 2014 taking place next week, you should expect nothing less.

A lot of the products announced on the show floor actually never see the light of day. Some of them will be quirky, some of them will be cool, but they're almost always interesting to say the least.

With CES ringing in the new year, we thought it would be apt to discuss what you should expect to see at CES 2014 before we head on out there ourselves.

So take a gander through our gallery below and let us know what you're looking forward to seeing.

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 10:12 AM PST

Gamevice

Company will also continue to support own tablet

Wikipad has revealed a detachable controller for mobile devices called Gamevice while also announcing continued support for its Wikipad gaming tablet with a new update.

Designed to be a detachable console-like controller, the Gamevice features a flex bridge design allowing it to expand or collapse. Such a design will permit the controller to work on Windows 8 and Android mobile devices including the manufacturer's own Wikipad 7-inch Android gaming tablet that was released June 2013

The new hardware will feature dual analog sticks, L1/R1 and L2/R2 analog buttons, an analog D-pad, and analog action buttons giving it a similar form factor to that of a console controller.

No price or release date was provided but more information will be forthcoming at CES 2014 next week.

Wikipad has also announced the future release of an over-the-air (OTA) update for the Wikipad 7. New features such as controller mapping, Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), and a plethora of games from their new content partner WildTangent Games will come with the update.

One of the new features, the Wikipad Controller Assistant, will allow mobile users to change the control scheme of their Wikipad 7 for any Android game into a console-like experience. Meanwhile the Android 4.2 update will help improve battery life, offer the option of creating multiple user accounts, provide improved camera features, and gesture typing among other improvements and features.

Wikipad users will also be receiving six pre-installed games: Shadowgun, Reckless Racing 1, Raging Thunder 2, Sprinkle, Granny Smith, and Zen Pin HD wil be available to users.

No date was given as to when Wikipad adopters will be able to download the OTA update.

Acer Announces DA2223 HQL and TA272 HUL All-in-One Android PCs

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 09:29 AM PST

Acer DA223 HQLIt's an all-in-one with Android inside

As evidenced by a few early product announcements, this will be the year manufactures find out if there's a market for all-in-one systems running Android instead of Windows. Acer will be one of the first PC makers to find out, having just introduced its DA223 HQL, a 21.5-inch portable AIO running Android Jelly Bean and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz. In addition, Acer unveiled its TA272 HUL, another all-in-one, but with a 27-inch display and a WQHD (2560x1440) resolution.

Starting with the DA223 HQL, the 21.5-inch display features 10-point capacitive touch support and a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. To get your Windows fix, the system supports MHL connectivity, meaning it can be hooked up to mobile devices and used as an external monitor. It also boasts Windows 8 certification so it can be used to project devices with Windows.

While on the topic of the display, it sports edge-to-edge glass, has a built-in battery so can you can carry it to a different room without shutting down, and an adjustable tilt stand that allows the frame to lay completely flat. Other details are pretty sparse, though Acer says the DA223 has already begun shipping worldwide for $699 MSRP.

Moving on to the TA272 HUL, this one packs a bigger display and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra quad-core chip. It also features 10-point capacitive touch support, has 16GB of internal storage, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, and runs Android Jelly Bean. It's not portable like the DA223, nor does the display lay flat, though it does tilt from 30 to 80 degrees. It also boasts a USB 3.0 port, HDMI connectivity, and a DisplayPort. THe TA272 HUL sells for $1,099 MSRP.

Lian Li Thinks Outside the Box, Turns Computer Desk into a PC Chassis

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 08:27 AM PST

Lian Li DK-01This isn't your typical desk (or case)

Lian Li has been known to flirt with funky looking case designs. Remember the shell-shaped PC-777 Memorial Edition chassis? And then there was the PC-CK101, a train themed enclosure that rolled into view towards the end of 2012. There have been others and there will be more, not all of which turn into shipping products. One prototype that's up in the air is the DK-01, which is a computer case that doubles as a desk.

According to TechPowerUp, the DK-01 measures 800mm x 795mm x 600mm (WxHxD), or 31.5 inches x 31.3 inches x 23.6 inches. It uses metal u-frames for the legs and houses your components in the top drawer, which you can see through a clear glass or acrylic top window.

This thing is capable of holding a lot of hardware. It supports ATX, XL-ATX, EATX, and even HPTX motherboards and has room for up to 14 3.5-inch drives, all of which are nestled into detachable bays. To install a giant size motherboard, you'll have to remove half the bays. You'll also need to remove some to make room for graphics cards up to 410mm (16.1 inches) in length.

Lian Li DK-01 Drives

There's room for up to seven 120mm fans, a PSU as long as 280mm (11 inches), and a CPU cooler up to 180mm (7 inches) in height. In other words, you don't have to make many compromises here.

Check out all the pics at TechPowerUp and let us know in the comments section below what you think of this chassis.

AT&T Tries Poaching T-Mobile Subscribers by Offering up to $450 Per Line to Switch

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 07:59 AM PST

AT&T T-MobileWireless wars are heating up

All is fair in love and war, and even though AT&T once tried courting T-Mobile to the tune of $39 billion before regulators shot down the deal, these one-time wireless BFFs are back to being rivals. In case you thought AT&T might go soft on T-Mobile, the former isn't pulling any punches on the latter, having today announced it will pay T-Mobile subscribers up to $450 per line if they switch.

"In addition to a larger and more reliable 4G LTE network, T-Mobile customers who switch to AT&T will benefit from a superior smartphone line-up and award-winning customer service," AT&T said.

The limited time offer on the table for T-Mobile customers is that if they switch to AT&T, they can trade-in their current smartphone for a promotional card worth up to $250. The value will vary by device based on make, model, and age, though AT&T says many of the latest and most popular handsets will be eligible for the full $250.

In addition, T-Mobile subscribers who switch to AT&T will receive an additional $200 credit per line. Between the two credits, AT&T is potentially offsetting any early termination fees and the cost of purchasing a new smartphone.

Acer Smells Blood in Low-Cost Tablet Category, Rolls Out Two New Models Starting at $130

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 05:55 AM PST

Acer Iconia A1-830The year of affordable Android tablets has begun

It seems like forever ago when the only Android tablets on the market were the ones trying to compete with Apple's iPad line at the $499 price point and above. Fast forward to today and affordable Android tablets are fairly common, though not quite ubiquitous. Might that change this year? Well, we're off to a good start with Acer announcing two new Iconia slates starting at just $130.

Starting at the lower end, Acer's Iconia B1-720 is a 7-inch Android tablet aimed at new tablet owners and families looking for an additional slate for the kids. It has a thin design that houses a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage flanked by a microSD card slot, built-in Wi-Fi, 10-point touch support, and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. Acer says it will be available by the middle of this month for $130 MSRP.

If you have a few more pieces of eight to spend, Acer also announced the Iconia A1-830, a slightly larger tablet with a 7.9-inch IPS display and 1024x768 resolution. It measures just 0.32 inches (8.15mm) thin and weighs just 0.84 pounds, but wields an Intel Atom (Clover Trail+) Z2560 1.6GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. It also has 802.11n Wi-Fi, a rear-facing camera that captures 2560x1920 video, a front-facing camera with 1600x1200 capability, micro USB port, Bluetooth 3.0, microSD card slot, and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. This will will go for $180 $149 when it becomes available later this quarter.

Update

Acer sent Maximum PC an email letting us know of a last minute pricing change. The new price of the Iconia A1-830 is $149 instead of $180 as originally announced.

Acer Gives Touchscreen Chromebook a Moonstone White Makeover

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 05:54 AM PST

Acer Chromebook WhiteSame on the inside, different on the outside

Acer was the first to market with a touchscreen Chromebook when it introduced the C720P back in November, and in case the addition of a touch panel alone wasn't enough to make you consider Google's cloud-based platform for a secondary notebook (or primary one for little Billy), then a color change probably won't be the straw that breaks your back. Regardless, Acer just expanded its touchscreen Chromebook line by unveiling a Moonstone White model.

The Moonstone White (C720P-2600) Chromebook sports a completely white chassis, "giving the device a consistently stylish look from any angle." Other than the style change, it's the same Chromebook in function.

Like its predecessor, the C720P-2600 features an 11.6-inch HD (1366x768) LED display with touch support, Intel Celeron 2955U processor based on Haswell, 2GB of RAM, 32GB solid state drive (SSD), 802.11n Wi-Fi, HD webcam, USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, HDMI output, and up to 7.5 hours of battery life.

The new model is also priced at $300 and comes with 12 free Go-go in-air Internet passes and up to 100GB of free Google Drive storage for the first two years after purchase. Retailers will begin carrying the new Chromebook SKU next week.

Experience Entropy's character creator with new video

Experience Entropy's character creator with new video
The new space sim Entropy hit the scene last month through Steam's early access program, and interested explorers can get a glimpse of character creation thanks to a new video. Players can be a variety of alien species on top of human, or just add alien characteristics to a human. While the options for hair and facial features are not extensive (most have no more than eight ) and the color pallet is fairly limited (ranging between five and 14 choices for most options), players can still create a reasonably unique character -- or an approximation of The Hulk, if desired -- thanks to the number of different features that can be altered.

Looks are not the only thing players must settle on, either; one point that the video emphasizes is that picking a background for your character actually has meaning as whichever choice you make grants you different skills and items upon entering the game. Check out some of those options available in the clip below.

Some Assembly Required: Virtual world roundup for 2014 and beyond
Just over two years ago there was a great disturbance, as if millions (or so) of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Yes, something terrible had happened: a beloved virtual world was destroyed. And that left a number of sandbox refugees looking for a new place to call home. At that time, Some Assembly Required offered a roundup of the then available virtual worlds that could possibly offer accommodation, depending on what qualities players most desired in their games.

But as things are wont to, they changed; a lot can happen in the MMOverse in 24 months, from additional features in existing games to new games to the loss of more worlds. So it's time to update this list of virtual worlds to reflect 2014 and beyond. Take a look and see what titles or titles-to-be have the sandbox features that best make a game a home for you.

Sony Online Entertainment changes benefits for subscriptions

    Posted: 03 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

You can choose whatever you want, as long as what you want is this.
It's a fairly common model for free-to-play games that offer a subscription -- subscribers get an allowance of cash-shop currency in addition to other benefits. It's how Sony Online Entertainment's games have worked for as long as they've had the model. But EverQuest II and PlanetSide 2 subscribers are seeing a new version of subscriber benefits, one that removes the usual Station Cash allowance and replaces it with an item worth the equivalent amount or more.

Every month, players are given a choice between one of several items worth up to 2000 Station Cash. This item must be selected on a monthly basis, as benefits do not carry over from month to month. While the net amount of rewards should be functionally identical, it will mean fewer options about what you acquire on a monthly basis, especially as Player Studio items are listed as exclusions from the list. If you're unhappy with the change, you've got time to say so, as the change is not going into effect until February 3rd.

McQuaid's MMO is Pantheon: Rise of The Fallen

    Posted: 03 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Thanks to some sleuthing of one fan, the name of Brad McQuaid's upcoming MMO has been discovered -- and confirmed -- on Twitter. Behold Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen! Unfortunately, the name of the project is the only tidbit of information that has been confirmed so far, although additional information has been compiled as to who might actually be a part of the development team: Noell Walling, Tony Vhalen Garcia, Ben de la Durantaye, James Rochelle, and Corey LeFever. It also appears that SOE is the registrar for the domain PantheonROTF.com, but there is no indication of what that might mean.

For those who are concerned about how McQuaid will handle this new project, he acknowledged that due to his initial big success, he "became extremely arrogant, thinking whatever [he] touched would turn into gold," but he learned from his mistakes and is looking forward.

[Thanks to BaBaGraPL for the tip!]

Storyboard: What housing does for roleplaying

    Posted: 03 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

Note to self, really need to replace this header this year. No cheating!
Those of you who read the other meanderings that I post on the site already know that I am very, very unhappy about the mess that Final Fantasy XIV has made out of housing. You don't need to hear about it again, though. What's far more relevant is addressing a question that at once seems screamingly straightforward and yet barely gets answered: Why does housing matter so much for roleplaying?

Pretty much no one argues with the basic premise that housing is a boon for roleplaying, but that discussion usually stops there. It's assumed that the reasons it's helpful is self-evident in much the same way that having a game that does not set fire to your face is desirable. But it's useful to examine why at least affordable entry-level housing in a game is important for roleplaying and how it can lead to benefits for the community as a whole.

The Daily Grind: Are MMO gamers aging out of the genre?

      Posted: 03 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

      Resident Evil
In a recent report, Resident Evil developer Capcom claimed that its playerbase's average age is inching upward and its core users are in their late 30s and 40s, making for the "increasing possibility that some percentage of the existing users will outgrow games altogether."

The Resident Evil games aren't MMOs, of course, but journalists and commenters have been suggesting the same pattern for the MMORPG genre for years as a way to explain everything from the rise of "accessible" MMOs to the reduction of grindy time-consuming gameplay to themes seemingly catering to those darn kids on our lawn.

Perhaps armchair demographers are wrong and the future holds the promise of retirement homes filled with gaming rigs and World of Warcraft IV. What do you think -- are classic MMO gamers slowly aging out of the genre? Is MMO gaming something we "outgrow," or is it something we're ultimately pushed away from?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Summoner's Guidebook: Pooling your efforts to win LoL games

      Posted: 02 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

Winning in League of Legends isn't only about skill. Sometimes you completely rock your lane and go 7/0 in laning phase yet manage to lose the game. Blaming your team is totally reasonable there, but the truth is probably closer to home than you think. A team that is working together will prevail regardless of the strength of its individual members and in most cases regardless of its strategic decisions.

I've had games where we had one losing lane and no other big lane advantages (I stole a blue buff once, and both junglers took some Flashes but didn't get any big wins), then went on to utterly destroy the enemy because we pulled together as a team despite having a 5/0 Riven on the enemy team. I've also had games where we had two people with over 5 kills in laning phase and still managed to lose.

As 2013 comes to a close, it's a good opportunity to look back at your guild's year and remember the success and memorable high points you reached together. For every guild that made it through the year, there are hundreds if not thousands that didn't. There are many challenges to running a guild, and sadly, there are too many potential pitfalls that can cause even the most cohesive guilds to fracture and fall apart.

The start of a new year is a good time for guild leaders to make a few resolutions to strengthen their guild and make the coming year more enjoyable for all. Let's look back at some helpful advice from the past year's Guild Counsel as we look forward to 2014.

Is League of Legends greedy? No, says Riot Games president

                League of Legends
Responding to claims that Riot Games is being greedy and lazy for failing to create an updated client for League of Legends, President Marc Merrill posted a sharp-tongued rebuttal on Reddit yesterday.

"It's pretty frustrating when people try to position us as greedy," Merill began, "because look at it from our perspective: We build pretty much the first successful free online game in the west that core gamers actually really like and play. We did this by building a really fun game, constantly investing over and over to grow and improve this game and by NOT selling power or being money hungry."

Merill said that "millions upon millions" play the game for completely free, which is completely fine with Riot Games, and that the studio does the right thing in the end such as its response to the e-sports contract controversy.

"I completely disagree with your greed accusation and yes, it pisses me off because I've spent the last eight years of my life building this company, game, and team to deliver great value and to treat players well," he wrote.

TERA is creating a flying scythe-user class

TERA's taking terror and pre-adolescent creepiness to the skies with an upcoming class, tentatively called the Flying Scythe-user.

Details about the new class are a little spotty due to the translation from Korean (so don't take that class name as gospel), but it looks as though the Elin-only class will be a ranged character that harnesses dark magic and flings scythes and chains across the battlefield. The Flying Scythe-user will be unlocked once a player hits level 40 on another character, emerging into the light as a level 50 toon.

Some of this class' skills include chain attacks, a dark explosion, an AoE whip, spinning blades, and a dark shield. The class will be very nimble, with abilities to ignore attacks, quickly dodge, and swap places with the enemy.

The class will be first available in Korea, with a presumable jump to other regions thereafter.

[Thanks to Vunak for the tip!]

DayZ sells 400,000 copies in its first week of early access

Wait, this isn't the one where I can make chainsaw gloves to cut up zombies.
The holiday season makes zombies of us all, as we lurch hither and yon through a combination of exhaustion and overeating. So it's totally understandable that you may have forgotten to really check in on the activities of DayZ's early access during the holidays. But now we're all back up and running, and it turns out the game did quite well for itself, with 400,000 copies sold during its first week of early access on Steam.

The official update stresses once again that the game is still very much in an early state, and the people who purchase it should be ready to take part in the ongoing development progress rather than expecting to get a finished game. While the team has understandably been taking a bit of a break over the holiday season, the game has its immediate future already mapped out. Despite the delays, the game seems very much alive in its current state.
